The Transformers Fic Rec community!
With Tumblr rolling out its Community function in beta, I'm jumping in to experiment with whether it's a good platform for an old idea I had to run some kind of fic rec event/feed for Transformers. Because I miss when fic rec communities were a bigger thing in fandom!
What is it?
So first off, communities are a new Beta feature Tumblr is rolling out which allows members to post and reblog to semi-public, curated feeds here on Tumblr. (If you were around when Livejournal was a thing, or use Dreamwidth, it brings a little of the way comms work(ed) on those platforms over here.)
Posts made to the community are visible when you visit it, but don't go into the wider public search. You can comment on and react to posts, and members can reblog posts from elsewhere on Tumblr into the community. The idea is for this to be a dedicated little feed you can proactively check and post to when looking for fic recs and related discussion, somewhere between a forum and a blog feed! Slower and more public than a Discord server, but more curated and targeted than just throwing stuff out there. I also hope to start doing fic rec theme/challenge weeks on there at some point, if I can get things going!
The community will be 18+ only, due to it accepting mature and explicit fic recs. Users will need to have some kind of indication on their blog they are an adult to join. A set of basic guidelines is on the new community page as the pinned post for now and can be read before choosing to join if you like.
So how do I join?
At the moment, communities are invite-only while the beta testing continues. (They are currently working on letting admins use invite links to let people join, hopefully very soon.) This means that if you would like to request to join, you will need to send me an ask so I can add you. (Or comment on this post, or... you get the idea. You have to ask me.) In the future, you'll be able to request to join yourself. As mentioned above, this community is 18+, and blogs that do not verify you are eighteen or older will not be added. (Unless I know you, I guess? But otherwise: say you're old, please, lmao.)
Anyway. Check out the community here and if you want in, hit me up! I'll go make some example posts sometime later today or tomorrow, probably. :) Let's get the ball rolling! (And if you have any suggestions and/or feedback, let me know if you want, I'm all ears.)

Very random idea I had, based on a silly conversation with @chaosinstigator and @mael-bloggy 🤣🤣🤣🤣 but I managed to make it fluffy (I'll do the rest of the proper linking and tagging tomorrow) not edited.
Part 16
Max placed the plastic plate of food on the breakfast table and chuckled when Little Daniel barely looked over from where he’d been staring at the television for the last half hour. They were back in Monaco, back at Max’s home– well it was also Daniel’s too. Max still felt that way.
Testing had gone on without any hitches and Little Daniel had enjoyed his extended time in the paddock. He was one of the mechanic crew now, ‘helping’ them do a practice pitstop and everything. His grin had been so large when he’d helped Calum use the wheel gun and he’d bounced around giddy, for hours.
“Daniel, you should eat your apples before they turn brown.��� Max prompted, brushing wild curls backwards.
“Yucky brown.” Little Daniel declared, reaching blindly for a slice and chewing loudly. “Yum Maxy!”
“You like it? Thank you for telling me.”
Little Daniel grinned at him before his attention was arrested by the TV again. Max watched his familiar profile, once again fondly noting how it was achingly the same as when he was grown up. Even the mole in his hairline was the same.
They watched TV together while Little Daniel ate his snack. The documentary was focused on farms and agriculture, Little Daniel had surprisingly been hooked.
“Maxy! Look at the-the sheeps!” Little Daniel pointed as the sheepdog herded the fluffy animals.
“They're sheep, not sheeps.” Max corrected gently, “look at them go!”
Little Daniel looked over at Max quizzically, Max could see the gears turning in his head.
“But it's prulal- plural!” he insisted and Max bit back his smile.
“Yeah, but sheep is plural. So we don't add the S at the end.”
Little Daniel nodded, accepting Max's answer and turned back to the screen. He ate two more apple slices before “Maxy look at the baby shoop! He's naked! They tooked all his wool!” Little Daniel pointed to the screen, watching to see if Max was looking.
“They did! But it's not cold anymore so they did it to make sure he doesn't get too hot. Then he'll be an overheated sheep.”
“He's one! No plural Maxshy. He's a shoop!” Little Daniel corrected, waving an apple slice.
Max smiled fondly. “No he's a sheep. Sheep is singular and plural. It's weird I know.” He chuckled at Little Daniel's disbelieving face. It was the same face older Daniel gave when he thought Max gave him dubious information and thought he was fucking with him.
It felt like a punch to the gut, the ache. With how painfully familiar it was.
“No Maxshy. Teeth is with tooth so sheep is with shoop.” Little Daniel nodded at his own logic.
“You are a smarty pants aren't you?” Max grinned, thinking of a way to explain it. It was reminiscent of a similar conversation they'd had previously on Daniel's farm. When Daniel had laughingly told him that it'd taken him forever to accept the explanation about why sheep was singular and plural.
Max drew from Daniel's own explanation to him. He pulled Little Daniel into his lap, smiling down at trusting honey eyes.
“English is really silly but it's ooolllddd–”
“Like Helmut?” Little Daniel chirped around some apple and Max snorted.
“Like Helmut. And because it's old it was really really simple. Farmers had their herds and they referred to the herd as one unit instead of multiple animals within the herd. So it's a herd of sheep rather than a bunch of individual sheep. Liiikkee a bouquet of flowers instead of a couple flowers.” Max floundered for more examples while Little Daniel watched him consideringly.
“Like Maxshy and Daniel?” He asked and Max wanted to melt into a puddle, maybe.
“Yeah like us.” Max's voice wobbled and Daniel grinned at him before turning back to the TV that was now showing a herd of what looked like antelope.
Max stared at the slope of Little Daniel's nose and his wide curious eyes. They were a unit, a ‘them’. Max and Daniel, Daniel and Max.
And Max was determined that they would be again.

My thoughts on the Bryce, Azriel and Nesta HOFAS bonus chapter...

Disclaimer: as suggested by the title, the following discusses the Walmart HOFAS bonus chapter featuring Azriel, Bryce and Nesta. I haven't read the main text, so it won't feature anything related to that, but there are massive Maasverse and HOFAS spoilers ahead regardless. Please beware.
These are just my initial thoughts, not expanded upon in any substantial way and, as usual, I could always be way off the mark.
Also, yes, fair warning that I'll be mentioning the ACOTAR characters a lot. If that's not your jam, and you'd rather avoid any of the possible implications of the crossover, then I'd give this post a miss. On the other hand, if you're interested in how CC/HOFAS may affect Prythian going forward, please read on.
Music:
The Stone Mother song has me 👀 especially as the stone and water were "talking" at the start.
@cassianfanclub and @wingedblooms have already posted about the Stone Mother (here and here); @ladynightcourt3 has found the Phrygian goddess Cybele, also known as the "Mountain Mother," who sounds very relevant.
That being said, am I crazy to think Elain could have been listening in? Is Azriel stone and Elain water? His stone siphons - which Elain called beautiful, did she hear their song, as kin? - and Elain possibly as water? Was she using salt water to boost her powers, or a reflection pool to scry, and keep tabs on her sister and friend?
Or is it the space between linking worlds? Are the old gods talking?
Alternatively, could stone be referring to Nuala and Cerridwen, who are capable of manifesting stone around themselves and others (ACOTAR).
Is this what SJM meant when she said we'd see Elain in "some form" in the next book?
@psychee92 said she wished that SJM had somehow included Mr Brightside, and now I wish the same; even a mention of indie rock. 😭
Josie and Laurel - "He/god will add/increase" "(laurel) trees/victory"? Elain? Lol sorry, but it's either giving gardener, or Elain killing Hybern.
Wraith-like harmonies? After the description of Josie and Laurel's voices? It's crack, but is it a metaphor for Nuala and Cerridwen?
The musical similarities between what Juniper dances to and Prythian's music?!
Azriel's humming/singing made the shadows dance, once more suggesting that shadows dancing is a response to power, not mate bonds
The music Az liked was death metal. Could this link to any sort of metal artefact, like an iron crown for grounding? Or wyrdstone jewellery?
The glass coffin?
"Nineteenth century literature presents the glass coffin as a prison within which sleeping women are frequently mistaken for dead or vice versa." (Source). It's giving Sleeping Beauty (credit to @elriell for the OG SB theory), and a little Snow White.
Check out this tale from The Brothers Grimm, which sounds... suspiciously relevant to Elain.
@cassianfanclub also suggested that it's giving necromancer vibes, and I'd love that for Elain.
Feyre once said she could sleep for a hundred years after coming back from the Prison, right before going to the Hewn City in ACOWAR. After Elain had left the room, and before Feyre went to check in on her to find her "asleep—breathing."
Let's not forget Elain's assistance in rescuing the human COTB, Briar, from Hybern's camp.
Will Elain prick herself while weaving?
I was tired enough that I could barely summon the breath to ask, “Do you think the Cauldron made her insane?” “I think she went through something terrible,” Lucien countered carefully. “And it wouldn’t hurt to have your best healer do a thorough examination.” I rubbed my hand over my face. “All right.” My breath snagged on the words. “Tomorrow morning.” I managed a shallow nod, rallying my strength to rise from the chair. Heavy—there was an old heaviness in me. Like I could sleep for a hundred years and it wouldn’t be enough. “Please tell me,” Lucien said when I crossed the threshold into the foyer. “What the healer says. And if—if you need me for anything.” I gave him one final nod, speech suddenly beyond me. I knew Nesta still wasn’t asleep as I walked past her room. Knew she’d heard every word of our conversation thanks to that Fae hearing. And I knew she heard as I listened at Elain’s door, knocked once, and poked my head in to find her asleep—breathing. - ACOWAR, chapter 27
Azriel specifically said Nesta "beheaded" Hybern, after looking down at Truth-Teller.
This is not Azriel giving Nesta credit for the assassination. If anything he's hiding Elain's involvement.
I've said before, and I'm sure I'm not the only one who has done so, but I would expect Azriel to protect his LI with silence, whoever they are.
He had to have been thinking about Elain, who I've theorised could now/soon be known as "The Shadowsinger's Knife" after she became the "knife in the dark" in Azriel's place at the end of ACOWAR.
The young girl sitting on the mushroom:
I'm still looking into the carving of the young girl sitting on the toadstool with the hound sprawled on the ground beside her, as I find it really interesting. My initial thought was that it seemed like a convenient place to drop a mention of a garden-like fairy carving with a hound right after Bryce had quizzed Azriel about his hypothetical mate, or lack thereof (Elain being both heavily associated with plant life, thanks to her "little garden," as well as dogs, after Nesta called her one in ACOSF).
I also wonder if it has anything to do with the Czech tale that amanita muscaria - while psychoactive/toxic - are said to protect from lightning and other ill fortune. If this is correct, it reminds me a little of the markings - wyrdmarks - on the Archeron cottage.
I don't know where Bryce and co were walking, as I have only read this bonus chapter and the prologue, but given it was carved on an underground wall, and I suspect that there are underground portals in at least the Hewn City and the Prison, and maybe the waterways... could it have been for protection against the invading lightning Asteri? Or did the Asteri (Daglan?) put them there to protect against Thunderbirds, or whatever Hunt is?
Miscellany
Maybe Bryce hadn't been sent there by Urd? Who then? Was @silverlinedeyes right all along?
The mention of pleasure halls seems like a call back to Azriel's bonus chapter, but it's also likely that they aren't all brothels (see Rita's).
Azriel listening closely about Nesta now liking being Fae; he could extrapolate her responses to Elain. Maybe she's no longer miserable, and in need of their pity. And maybe she's changed her mind from ACOFAS, when she said to Feyre "I don't want a mate, I don't want a male."
Azriel said "no" to whether or not he has a mate rather quickly. Hmm... the shadowsinger doth protest too much?
It's also potentially important that Nesta said "yes, WE are" curious about Azriel's mate status. Her, Azriel and most of the fandom! 😂
"Okay, okay," Bryce said. "But it'd be cool to know something about your world. Or about you." They were both silent. Bryce asked Nesta, "You have a mate, right?" She nodded to Azriel. "Do you?" "No." Azriel said quickly, flatly. "A partner or spouse?" "No." Bryce sighed. "Okay, then." Azriel's wings twitched. "You're incurably nosy." "I think that's the nicest thing you've said about me." Bryce winked at him. "Look, I just... I'm curious. Aren't you?" Azriel didn't answer, but Nesta said, "Yes. We are." - HOFAS, Bryce, Azriel and Nesta bonus chapter
All in all, while there were no overt mentions of Elain - and really, why would SJM do that in a series that wasn't Elain's own - imo we got the Elain-shaped holes in the text that I was hoping for, and I can't wait to see if there are any more in the full book.

Despite his promises, the ambassador – who I've come to know as Humak Tigelaar, a distant cousin of the Arjiki chieftain – never leaves the palace to explore the Emerald City. This is not the case for me. With good behavior at dinner and pleading my case over breakfast, the Wizard grants me permission to go to the children's home with an escort from one of the Royal Palace guards. The guard I've been provided with, Bruno, is not as tall as the Wizard, but well-built with broad shoulders and curls of brown hair that stick out from under his officer's cap. It is in fashion for most of the Royal Palace guards to have a mustache, but he is clean-shaven and seems to hold no regard for the way others look at him. He also has no interest in looking at me either, instead preferring to scan the crowd as we walk through the streets of the Emerald City. I try following his eyes, but find nothing more dangerous than some children playing stickball in an alleyway. I wonder if it was the Wizard who picked him out or Glafly, given the way he is taking all of this so seriously.
It could have been the Wizard, I think. I expected him to spend his time in the study connected to his bedroom, but after breakfast, he disappeared to the bottom levels of the palace. Maybe if today goes well, I could ask if I could follow him around while he does his magic and work for the day. It would certainly be more interesting than snooping around all of the gilded objects that I've seen and not getting a chance to even use a feather duster to help out my friends. If today goes well, I'll ask him tomorrow, I promise myself.
We reach the children's home and I palm the ribbon that I had stashed in my coat pocket as Bruno opens the well-worn door for me. The inside of the home is warm, with a fire roaring in the hearth that sits opposite the outdated reception desk. A unionist sister sits there, making notes in a ledger quickly before she lifts her head to see the cause of the chilled draft. A smile warms her face as she recognizes me.
"Are we here to see Fileah?" she asks.
"Yes, Sister Margaret," I nod. "I'm sorry that I couldn't have come earlier. I was-" I look to Bruno who is making very careful note of everything around the room as if memorizing it or checking it for traps. "-unavailable."
Sister Margaret looks at Bruno and then back to me. "Is this your... fiance? We don't have him on the approved list yet, I'm afraid."
My eyes go wide at the suggestion that straight-laced and unsociable Bruno is romantically involved with me. For all of his attentiveness, he seems to not have heard the ridiculous suggestion.
"No...No!" My words aren't coming to me as I try to find a way to politely explain that the Mighty and Powerful Wizard of Oz had decided to keep me as his... Plaything? Personal maid? Why was he keeping me? If I couldn't figure it out, how was I supposed to explain it to Sister Margaret? I settle for another lie, unhappy to add again to the total of untruths that I need to keep straight. "He's our cousin... from out of town. Just signed on to the force."
Sister Margaret squints to get a better look at him, maybe to see if there is any familial connection in a cheekbone or jawline. Satisfied, she pulls out an index card from one of her desk drawers and asks me for his information as she fills it in neatly. Bruno seems unfazed by this whole process, taking great note of the ornaments that hang from the boughs stuffed in a great wicker basket in the corner. He flicks a red glittery one, and I think he’s trying to find a way to turn it into a weapon.
Once "Cousin" Bruno is duly noted, Sister Margaret takes us to the dining room. The children are having lunch and it doesn't take long to spot Fileah. She's a wisp of an 8-year-old girl, all limbs with a scrawny neck and a nose that pokes out over her lips making her look like a rabbit. I wonder if I looked like her when I was her age, and decide that I didn't, not at least with our parents providing for us. Looking at the trays of the children I see that today's menu consists of salt and pepper potatoes cooked until they look more like clumps than potatoes, half of a hunk of bread that could have been used for a sandwich had their neighbor not had the other half, and a ball of meat that is gray from being boiled for too long.
Fileah looks up from her disappointing lunch when a small girl next to her tugs on her sleeve to point me out. I don't know how many visitors the other children get, but I had never seen someone visiting at the same time I had ever been there. It makes sense, in a way. Fileah and I are either lucky or unlucky, depending on how you look at it: lucky in the sense that I was old enough to declare my emancipation when our parents had died and I could bring her things from the outside, unlucky in that we were separated and I couldn't support her or let her live with me at the palace. Today, I feel as if we are lucky, as if things might be different soon. She smiles as I approach. I take a seat across from her at the dining table. Bruno makes an assessment of the dining hall, and seeing that the tallest possible threat comes only to his waist, sits down next to me.
"How's my favorite little rabbit?" I ask.
Fileah smiles at the old nickname. Even though she's only 8, I can't remember if I gave it to her or if our mother did when she was born. "You've been gone for a long time," she says.
Even though I had the entire walk from the palace to figure out what to say, I never came up with an answer. No doubt Bruno would be listening too and any oversharing of information would be reported straight back to Glafly and eventually the Wizard. Maybe the Wizard really could read minds as so many of the staff had wondered and he wouldn’t even need to wait to hear it from Glafly. Regardless, I keep my oath of secrecy about just how human he is that I promised when I went into his service, even if I didn’t work officially as a maid anymore. "The staff is having a restructuring," I settle on.
Fileah pushes a small lump of boiled potato around in some brown sauce, not looking me in the eyes. "I was worried that you forgot me." I can hear the hurt in her voice.
"I could never forget you!" I say. "As a matter of fact, I got you a present."
Her eyes are suddenly bright, wide, and looking at me, and I try my best to memorize every ounce of joy on her face. I fish out the ribbon before I can lose myself in the worry of when I might see her next. It's an emerald green with a golden brocade of peacocks. When I had gone back to my room last night, I finally got around to reading the note that had been left on the vanity.

It took a bit of figuring out, but eventually, I was able to open the top of the vanity to see hundreds of different ribbons in all shades of green and gold, perched on display in a case like colorful macarons. Some I had pulled out and gasped, gawking over them as they had been inlaid with diamonds or sapphires. The entire vanity of them must have cost more than I would ever make in my lifetime, more than likely double. I had picked the one with the peacocks on it because I remembered how much she had liked seeing them at the zoo when I took her a few years back. She had loved them so much that she promised me one day she would grow up to come back and take care of them.
Fileah gasps, and she is hesitant to take the ribbon from my hands. "It's so pretty," she says.
"Do you want me to tie it in your hair?" I ask. I get up and go around to the other side of the table, pulling her two braids to the back of her head. Before I leave, I'll make sure to weave it into them so none of the kids can steal it, but for right now, I want everyone to see her and the beautiful peacocks fully on display.
"Is that your boyfriend?" Fileah asks as I'm looping the ribbon.
"Fileah!" I exclaim. I look around to see if Sister Margaret is anywhere near before I say anything. "This is Bruno. He's one of the palace guards. Our Wizard sent him with me." I finish tying the ribbon and take my place again at the other side of the dining table. “And as far as you know, he is our cousin.”
"I asked if he was your boyfriend," Fileah says. She gives him a good once over, staring him down as she skewers her overcooked potato. When he meets her eye, she says, "Have you ever killed anyone?"
"Animal or human?" he asks.
I kick Bruno under the table, trying to get both of them to stop the violent topic. My head is practically spinning as I look around to make sure that nobody else is listening to their conversation. It probably won't be of much use. There are two boys and a girl who are intently listening into the interrogation, lunches long forgotten.
"Umm," Fileah says, eyes cast upwards as if the correct answer was stored somewhere in her brain. "Can I ask both?"
The bloodthirsty curiosity brings a smile to his face and he laughs. He laughs. I can't believe that my scrawny rabbit of a sister has gotten Mr. No-Nonsense to laugh. "13 animals, 1 human," he says, "but I didn't 'kill' them."
Fileah's nose scrunches. "Well, they're dead right?"
"Yes," Bruno says.
"So you killed them," she says.
Bruno blinks and sighs. I know what he means. It's not like he planned their murder or anything, but Fileah doesn't know that. Fileah hasn't figured out that he's just doing his job and that it's rude to ask someone questions like that.
"Did you kill the Winkies that were at the gate?" the boy next to Fileah asks. Both Bruno and I are confused about that.
"Winkies?" he asks.
"Ms. Amrose said that's why the house has been so cold," the boy continues. "She said the Winkies came and took all of the firewood back."
"That's not what she said, you idiot," Fileah says.
"Fileah!”I exclaim. “We don't call people names. Say you're sorry." The rude ways of the other children are rubbing off on her, and I wish more than anything at this moment that I had the money and a place to take her out of the orphanage, but I don't. It's bad to speak ill of the dead, but I can't help but hate my father for taking out that stupid loan for his business and using the family house as collateral. I might have been able to scrape by and make mortgage payments on it, but once the bank repossessed it, I was forced to look for room and board and a wage all in one place.
"But it's true," Fileah protests. "Ms. Amrose didn't say anything about the Winkies coming to take the wood. She said her brother went down to the gates and they wouldn't let them have the wood."
"Well, it's still not nice," I say. The home is noticeably colder now that they’ve mentioned it. I hadn't realized because I had managed to finagle some warmer servant’s clothes out of Emily and found an emerald fur-lined coat and muff in the trunk at the end of my bed. I pull the fur tighter, trying to banish the confusing thoughts of my mismatched wardrobe and who put them together. Today is about Fileah.
"Do you know when we'll get our wood back?" Fileah asks me.
"I don't know," I say.
"Ms. Amrose's brother got hurt," she says. "She hasn't been here so much because she's staying at home taking care of him. I hope he gets better soon. She gives us sweets when the sisters aren't looking."
That piques my interest. "Did she say how he got hurt?"
Fileah doesn't answer that. Her only reply is the way she looks at Bruno. I hadn’t noticed, but Bruno himself has lost any sort of cheer he may have had from answering the children’s silly questions. I fear that I am certain of what happened to Ms. Amrose's brother, and certain that Bruno has had something to do with it.
"I think it's time to go," Bruno says. "I'm sure his Ozness will be missing you."
I smile, trying to feign ignorance. "Bruno, don't be silly, we just got here."
Fileah doesn't say anything, but she's still looking at Bruno. I wonder if she's afraid that he will hurt her too.
"Let's go," Bruno says. I don't fight him as he helps me up by my elbow, but do turn to him quickly before he can escort me out.
"I still need to redo her ribbon," I whisper.
"You can do that or you can help yourself and her by leaving," he says.
I bite my tongue, considering my choices, but there really aren't any, not at least when it comes to Fileah. I tell her goodbye and then promise her I'll be back before Lurlinemas as Bruno escorts me out of the dining hall.
"You'd really harm a child?" I ask as I sign us both out, thankful that Sister Margaret isn’t at her desk. He doesn't answer that.
When we get out on the front steps, he says, "Are you hungry?"
"I want to go back to the palace," I reply.
"There's a bakery just around the corner here," he says, pulling my elbow. Clearly, I'm not getting a say in this.
We pass shops filled with painted wooden toys, bright red and gold flowers, and all other trappings that ring out the presence of Lurlinemas. I consider asking Bruno to stop at the toy store, wanting to look for a proper present for my sister, or at least to have an eyewitness before he took me off to some back alley to kill me. Instead, I see our reflections in the window and am struck by the memory of being hauled off by the palace guard at the night market. At least Bruno hasn't got my hand bolted to my spine. Still, I get the sense that he wouldn't listen to any pleas for window shopping.
The bakery that he brings us to looks like someone had jammed it in between its taller bank and cobbler neighbors. It’s at least 10 feet shorter than them, and only about 10 feet wide brick to brick. It's painted a sickly green but makes up for the lack of curb appeal in the warm scents of yeast and saffron that waft from the front door to the cobblestones we're stepping off of. Inside, he orders us two saffron buns – the baker gives him them for free on some account of familiarity that I don't catch – and sets us down at the bistro table that's been shoved in the corner.
"Are you trying to take me on a date or something?" I ask. I’m shocked that I’m not dead yet, instead holding a sweet bun. The bun is so warm that if it weren't for my gloves, I'm sure it would be burning my hands. The yeasty and fragrant steam coming from it seems to be a warning.
"You need to tell your sister to forget what she heard," he says. He doesn't even bother pretending to eat his bun, the little white plate with the steaming treat on top sitting in the middle of the table.
"What? About Ms. Amrose's brother?" I ask.
"What happened at the gates... No one is supposed to know about that," he says lowly.
"Why are you telling me then?" I ask.
Bruno pulls the plate closer to him, and I think for a second he might actually want to eat the bun. "I’ve got family too. A little brother. I don't want her to get hurt or nothing," he says.
"Who would hurt Fileah?!" I say, trying to keep quiet despite my rising voice. "She's just a little girl."
"I've seen the Gale Force take people her age before. They were spies, but still..." He pushes the plate away again as if the subject has ruined his appetite.
"What happened at the gate?" I ask. I feel like I know, but still, I want to hear it from him.
"You'd do best to forget it," Bruno says. He pulls out his pocketwatch, checking the time.
"It was a riot, wasn't it?" I ask.
Bruno's eyes snap up to meet mine and the jade within them is burning. "She's just a girl! Don't go asking stupid questions that'll get you both killed." He strokes his non-existent mustache as if it would stop the harsh tone in his voice. "I'm risking my own job taking you here. If it were Leo... Just..." he pushes up from the cramped bistro table, the metal chair ringing out as it scrapes along the tile. "Come on. I'm supposed to have you back by two."
I go to stuff the saffron bun in my pocket, hoping to have it later, but he stops me, putting the bun back on the little white plate.
"Don't," he says. "Don't let anyone know you were here. Just make sure your sister stops, okay?"
And so we leave the bakery: the bakery that I don't know about and have never visited.

Summary: You and Hazel spend the first night of the camping trip together

“So, that leaves you and Hazel,” Isabel had pointed out. 
You and Hazel look at each other and smile. Of course you two were fine with sharing a bed. You two got along well anyway. The two of you leave your things on the bed and then go outside to a nearby picnic table. It wasn’t too late in the day, as there was still light outside. The sky was only now just getting darker. The two of you begin to continue your conversation from the bus, picking up exactly where you left off.
“Okay,” you say, “enough about me. Where in the actual universe are you getting bombs?”
“Where else? You really think I’m going to like some deep, dark alleyway to find supplies? I usually just go to Home Depot and grab my supplies.”
“Really?” you ask surprisedly, raising an eyebrow.
“I’m not joking. I’ll take you one day if you’d like.”
“Wow Hazel, stringing your new friend into your bomb-making endeavors.” To this comment, Hazel giggles and plays with the rings on her fingers. She looked absolutely adorable doing this.
“I’d never let you get in trouble for it though,” Hazel adds quickly, “I don’t like throwing people under the bus.”
“Sure you don’t,” you quip teasingly, “If you don’t, then what was that with PJ during the last pep rally?”
“Now that’s a different story. PJ, umm, made me feel, unloved? The fight club has been a safe space for me during my mom’s midlife crisis. I guess when PJ kind of summed up for me that I had no friends, and, um, had a skank as a mom, I wanted to defend myself. Also, they said I was fighting PJ.”
“Well, you have me, so you have friends. And uh, I don’t know about the mom stuff, but she definitely didn’t raise a skank, so that must say something.” Hazel smiles, glad that you at least understood her. She holds your hands, which had been resting on the table.
“I’m really glad we’ve started getting to know each other. It’s nice to talk with someone who’s like me in some ways.”
“Yeah. Even though I’m friends with like Isabel and Brittany and those people, I feel like they don’t understand. Like half of those people don’t even read. Like, the school took away the books and they just don’t care.” Hazel looks at you as you continue rambling, a concentrated, attentive look in her eyes. She seems dazed almost.
“Hazel?”
“Yeah?” she says, shaking out of her daze.
“You good? It seemed like you phased out for a moment.”
“No, I’m just tired. I didn’t sleep well yesterday.” You look up at the sky, which has gone basically dark. 
“Should we go sleep?”
“Oh, we don’t have to. We can keep talking if you want.”
“No no, I’m tired too. Plus, we have a long day tomorrow doing the trash and stuff.”
“Okay! As long as you’re okay with it. I don’t want to force you to do something just because I am.”
“You’re not. Don’t worry about it, Haze.” You hold out your arm, and she links it in yours. The two of you laugh and talk your whole way back to the cabin. She sees PJ and Josie looking at her with teasing looks, lips puckered up. She quickly turns her head away to see you curled up on the corner of the bed, book in hand. It’s an astronomy book about constellations and the stories behind them.
Hazel looks at you as she climbs into bed.
“Whatcha reading?”
“Oh, just a book about the stories between different constellations.”
“OH! We didn’t get to look at the stars like we said.”
“Whatever. We’re both tired, and I’m sure we’ll have even more fun tomorrow doing so. I bet since we’ll spend the whole day together, we’re going to have a great time.”
“Don’t let me forget tomorrow. I’ll feel horrible if you don’t get to look at the stars at least once before the trip is over.”
“Don’t worry Haze, I won’t.” Hazel’s cheeks turn pink at the nickname, but she brushes it off and lies down. PJ and Josie ask everyone if it’s okay to turn off the lights, making you close your book and lie down as well. You assume that Brittany and Isabel are off with the other cheerleaders and that they’ll come back soon. You feel Hazel shudder when the lights turn off in the cabin.
“Hey, Haze, what’s wrong?” you whisper, turning to her under the covers.
“Nothing. Um, it’s just that I, um, kind of, always use a night light? I don’t like the pitch black.”
“Is there anything I can do to help?”
“I don’t know.” Hazel turns around to face you. Just then, your hands bump under the covers. You don’t know what overcomes you, but you decide to hold Hazel’s hand.
“Is that okay?” you ask. You hear Hazel’s breathing slow down to its relaxed pace.
“Yeah. Much better. Are YOU okay with that though?” she asks, concerned that maybe you would feel weird holding her hand.
“No, of course not. I want you to sleep well.” You two are facing each other in the bed, only barely able to see the traces of each other’s face.
“As long as you’re okay with it, I am too.”
“Goodnight Haze.” The two of you fall asleep facing each other, and holding hands, and wake up like that the next morning.

follow up clowning related to gg’s weibo post from here. a reminder first that i don’t think everything has to mean something and most of the time what they post is just plain and simple. we are clowns, so we will speculate but that doesn’t mean we have to find some candy for every content they post before we can enjoy & appreciate it. for example, we also think that the reason GG is doing these solar terms right now, while he is filming LoZ is in the synopsis of the drama, his character is the son of the “director of the Imperial Observatory of the Great Yong Kingdom” , that’s the english translation. but the key here in the original text is this word: 钦天监 [qīn tiān jiàn].

another coincidence is that in the song itself, the word comes up in the 0:19 mark. 👀

commemorating the anniversary of when he followed yibo on weibo, 4/20/2018 so he posted on the eve of that day. maybe he is celebrating something else that only the two of them know and it’s not necessarily something as mundane as following a person on weibo. who knows. however, it’s on the bxg calendar so we are marking that down as a possible reason. 📝

i love this explanation tho, that goes back to that actual day years ago and what happened. it was the 5th day of filming CQL and they did not have scenes together, so why did he pay attention and followed him? he was filming the scene in the burial mounds, WWX was drunk and reminiscing about when he first met LWJ. WWX misses LWJ cause he is not there. Was XZ also missing WYB that time? to the point that he went to his weibo account and followed him?

it’s not a secret that XZ prefers it when WYB is there, not only to act with, but just there for him. plus this level of attachment on the 5th day of filming is not surprising when it comes to them.
finally, the imagery of the rain when it comes to them is one that holds some meaning. much like how we fixate on the stars and moon. photos below to show some of those relations to the rain. ☔️

If you're wondering why Yoh's freaking out about the rainy season even though they've been together for 3 years, the manga artist posted a clarification on twitter:
By the way, “it’s been 3 years since then” – that phrase refers to it being 3 years since that conversation regarding the slave contract. As for living together, they’ve only just started (to do so) around Mar/April*, so (at this point) it’s only been a few months (for them). What if (I) got it wrong…. I remember making a note of it, but the file that I wrote it in and passed over (to the crew) couldn’t be found right, so… (was it) a dream?” *Japan's rainy season comes around June/July, so this means that this is the first rainy season these two have been experienced together.

It's sort of inkeeping with Segasaki's curtness, but still pretty harsh - so this tells us he's tired after a long day, and explains the frown on his face that Yoh just wipes away with his cuteness

Nikujaga literally means meat and potatoes. It's a stewed dish and a very well-loved comfort food. Super easy to make too (link goes to an easy to follow recipe, and the site also explains a little about the dish).

I've talked about this in my cultural/language tidbits for this episode (linked up top) but I'll add it here for completion's sake
[Y: あ、いや。なんでもない…です*] (Ah, iya, nandemonai…desu*) Y: Ah, no, it's….nothing* Yoh let's his sentence trail off before tacking on a "desu" at the end. "Desu" is an ending verb characteristic of "polite" speech, which Yoh doesn't use frequently with Segasaki (in fact, by this point, he has not used polite speech with Segasaki at all, except for maybe saying the full form of the word "welcome home", and even that's pushing it). Here he adds it at the end as an afterthought (the polite form of "iya" would be "iie", if he had wanted the whole sentence to be polite from the get go), which tells us that Yoh's feeling a little off-kilter here, and does introduce the slightest distance between him and Segasaki. We'll see this distance increase as the episode goes on.

[Y: いや、どう考えても食べ過ぎだろう] Y: No but, no matter which way you look at it, (he's) eaten way too much hasn't he? Btw, if your hair started standing at the spoon scraping the pot - in the manga artist's post about visiting the shooting venue (as well as during Ep 1 twitter space) it was mentioned that Mashiko, the actor, can actually cook, so during filming they had to tell him what someone who can't would likely do, and also asked him to do the housework poorly (because Yoh's not supposed to be good at cooking or housework hahaha)

この人*、明日も朝早いんだよな。たぶん。 Original: This guy, has an early morning again tomorrow. Probably. Mine: This person*, has (to leave) early tomorrow morning too. Probably. *The word here is "kono hito", literally "this person". There's actually nothing wrong with the translation "this guy" tbh because that's a fairly neutral term in English, but I'm highlighting it here because in his monologues, Yoh usually refers to Segasaki using much rougher language, such as "koitsu, aitsu", except when he addresses Segasaki directly in his head. I'll talk more about how Yoh addresses Segasaki in the analysis post, but for now - this sentence hints that Yoh has clocked Segasaki's tiredness (subconsciously or not) and is feeling a little bad for him. Then again he quickly hides that by adding on "probably". (Adding the word "probably" behind your sentence is a common way to express doubt/negate what you just said, and incidentally is commonly used by comedians to deliver a punchline).

[Y: あの*…あの…寝るなら部屋でとおもって。] Original: Um… Hey… You should go back to your room. Mine: Um*... Um... if you're going to sleep then, (it would be better to sleep) in your room - at least that's what I thought...
*"あの…" (ano…), translated as "um" here, is a common sound you use when you want to get someone's attention but don't want to sound too demanding - it actually isn't being polite per se, but it does show the hesitancy with which Yoh approaches him. Contrast this with the way Segasaki gets Yoh's attention (so far it's just been "Yoh" or "Oi" - the latter of which you would NOT use unless you were close to the person, or looking for a fight).
As a general rule of thumb, the level of politeness in Japanese is directly correlated with the length of the sentence and just how far you can beat around the bush. So, Yoh's suggestion that Segasaki goes to sleep in his room is literally just "if sleeping, then room..." and everything else in that translation is assumed. He may not being using polite speech forms here (that would be "to omoimashita" instead of "to omotte") but this is still a common way to be polite because he's making a suggestion that is so mild Segasaki can choose to ignore it. This is a great example of Brown & Levinson's "negative politeness" which we'll revisit when analysing their speech patterns, and which you can read about in entirely too much detail here (free to read).

[Y: じゅあ、俺は寝るので** あの、その、そういうことで、おやすみ] Original: Then, I’ll go to sleep. That…sort of thing. Good night. Mine: So then, I'm going to bed, therefore**... Um... that... with that... night!
"Therefore" is an awkward translation for the word ので (node), which is more often translated as "so". I've chosen to use that word because "node", whilst again not a polite form per se, is less colloquial than the more commonly used "から(kara)", to mean the same thing. It tends to pop up more in writing than in speech. "Therefore" doesn't make a sentence polite/formal in English, but it's definitely less colloquial than using the word "so". The use of "node" is just that tiny bit out of place in this sentence paired with the informal pronoun "ore" for "I" as opposed to the more formal choice of "boku".

Again, Yoh answers Segasaki properly here with a "はい (hai)" as opposed to his usual "un" (which is a sound that expresses agreement), when told that Segasaki will be late again. There actually aren't very many moments where Yoh does speak politely to Segasaki (he's definitely rude when he talks about Segasaki in his head hahaha), so these moments stand out. This whole short exchange, together with the random -desu he added earlier, just make Yoh's sentences a little more stilted/awkward, and more distant. Individually they don't deserve much mention at all, but together, and in the context of his jealousy, show just how unsure Yoh is about where he stands with Segasaki.

[Y: あの人の帰宅が遅くなり] Y: That person returned home later and later
"That person" - similar to the above usage of "this person". This sentence is incomplete - the verb form of the last word - 遅くなり (osokunari) indicates that there should be a second part to the sentence (the "completed" form would be osokunatta). But after he says this, there is a pregnant pause, as Yoh puts his phone down and continues cooking alone. The pause continues all the way into the next scene, before the sentence continues, highlighting the loneliness that Yoh feels.

[Y: 当然、触れられることもないままに] Original: Of course, he did not touch me at all Mine: (and) of course, (I) remained untouched (by him) as well
The literal translation for this would be "(the situation in which I) was not touched (by him) continued on as well". Yoh uses the passive form of the word "touch", which places the emphasis on Yoh "receiving" the action of being touched as opposed to placing the emphasis on Segasaki "carrying out" the action of touching Yoh. Consider the difference between the sentences "I was hurt by him" and "he hurt me". The former is the passive form, and is super common in Jp, much less common in Eng. If this is confusing - welcome to Jp grammar just know that the emphasis of this line is more on what Yoh does not have, rather than what Segasaki has not done. It accentuates Yoh's feelings of emptiness and loss.

Similarly, this sentence is "incomplete", and is instead continued by Segasaki walking in and telling Yoh he'll be late again. (This whole bit just hurts my soul tbh, Yoh is so lonely. )

I try not to care about some of the subs in these side conversations because they don't add much to the main story and these posts are already too long, but this sentence should really be "Dammit, maybe I should (go) troll the chat" (and the previous sentence should be "If this was broadcasted in a certain country it would be instant death" aka N.Korea ^^;) and I just think it was a nice touch to hint at the fandom wars/flaming that goes on between fans hahaha

[Y: しんどい] Y: This is too draining The word here used is "shindoi", which is a term used when you're feeling mentally/physically exhausted/drained, and carries a sense of frustration (at feeling this way) and sometimes (emotional) pain.

This. Is. Huge. Segasaki does 2 things here - one, he rejects an after-work meal, which you rarely do because Japan is all about the group and rejecting a group invite, to welcome a new member, can make you seem like you aren't a team player - two, the guy who invites him is his senior, which you can tell because Segasaki sticks to polite speech forms whilst the other guy does not. It's still relatively casual, so you can tell he's got a good working relationship with them (probably why he's not worried about rejecting them) but still. In Segasaki's world, Yoh is the No. 1 priority.

This is more accurately "WTF". There are many sounds in Japanese that aren't exactly words, but carry a lot of meaning - "Haa?!" is one of them, and is a very rude way to express a lot of anger and shock. Please, never say this in real life. You will royally piss off whoever it's directed at and if you are outside a Shibuya bar you will get punched.

The word used here is てめぇ (temee), which is a really rude way to say "you", and has the same energy as "you bastard". Segasaki usually uses the informal pronoun "omae" for "you" when he talks to Yoh, he's definitely pissed off here.

I'm going to put the rest of the whole argument here with just my translation because it's too long to screencap the whole thing.

Breakdown: S: What's up with this? This lewd disaster of a scene Y: (You're) annoying! ["うるさい (urusai)" is often translated as "shut up", but it literally means someone is being "noisy", and here is more of a complaint that Segasaki is being bothersome] Y: I'm going to become a hot-selling erotica manga artist! [the word used here is 売れっ子 (urekko), which literally means "someone who gets huge sales" and mostly refers to idols, entertainers, TV personalities etc. So Yoh is not just saying he's going to become popular, he's saying he's gonna be like a celebrity manga artist, which is why Segasaki snorts a little at this] S: What's with that? Hey. *takes away beer can* Y: The hot sellers say that if you jerk off whilst drawing your storyboard, you'll come up with good stuff [urekko-san is a pretty cute way of referring to these popular artists] S: You've not drawn anything, you know? [this is said with a really indulgent air, which contrasts directly with the more authoritative tone of the next line] S: Hey, I'm telling you no more *grabs beer can* S: You drank too much. It's obvious from the acting alone that this entire argument is pretty emotionally charged - this is also reflected in the language because Yoh uses the pronoun "ore (I)" a lot. Pronouns are frequently dropped in Japanese - often you can go an entire conversation without ever uttering the words "I/me" or "you", in part because the pronouns are assumed and also because emphasis on an individual can come across as too selfish/narcissistic or direct. Segasaki uses them often enough with Yoh, which fits his personality, but Yoh normally doesn't. So, when he uses "ore" here it stands out - his plans to be successful and leave, his feelings, his interpretation of Segasaki's actions - all of the emphasis is on his own self. The message is very clear - Yoh is hurting a lot more than he is blaming or accusing Segasaki.

Again, we'll talk about this in the analysis post in the future, but for now just know that this term is usually used between older couples.] S: You... once you start drinking you really start talking huh? [literally, you "become able to talk"] Y: Hey...why is it when it rains, (we) can't do it? S: What? Because, you said so didn't you? [the last "haa?" from Segasaki! This time expressing his surprise and slight indignation.]

[S: 俺は優しいんだ] S: I. am. Kind. Great example of Segasaki's use of the "ore" pronoun here to quite literally emphasise how great he is. "優しい (kind)" in Japanese carries the connotation of being thoughtful, anticipating the other person's needs and wants and then meeting them etc. It's a characteristic that people often say they look for in their potential partners.

It has a dismissive sort of tone to it, like you've already assumed something or when you're pretty nonchalant/not impressed about whatever the other person has said and are just playing along with them by giving them some attention (so again, if you use it wrongly, it can piss people off). Segasaki uses it whenever Yoh goes mute or shy, as a way to tease Yoh - though Yoh seems to think Segasaki is dismissing/not interested in his answer. あ、そ (A, so) - again, Segasaki says this a lot - can be interpreted as "oh really?/I see/is that so?" - Combined with the above, you can see why Yoh often thinks Segasaki isn't interested in his answer, and even when he does recognise it as teasing, he gets too flustered to do anything about it.
This seems to have gotten longer, if you reached the end - congratulations! I hope this makes it a little clearer why it's so obvious to us as the viewer that Segasaki is really quite patient with Yoh, and is waiting for him to come to terms with his feelings, but at the same time so confusing for Yoh, because of the way many of these interactions can be read both ways. In Ep 3, we'll really be able to get into their dynamics because they've got so much more interaction together.

         Dark hikes your leg up onto his hip. He relishes in the softness of your skin beneath his fingers, a concrete reminder that you’re here, that you’re together again after everything.
         The new position allows him more space to roll his hips, grinding down against the heat between your legs. You shudder beneath him. A melancholy smile settles on his face. You pull his head down so that you can press your forehead against his.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to bring up bad memories.”
“You’ve done nothing wrong, my love. There are bad memories, yes, but also good ones. In fact, I can recall quite a few memories of us just as we are now, bare in each other’s arms, locked in the throes of passion.”
There’s a wry smile on his face, one that reminds you of evenings spent tucked away between bookshelves, sneaking out of dormitories at the crack of dawn, a rendezvous in the storage closet of a crowded chapel. Your heart aches for all the two of you have lost and can never get back. But despite everything you had been through, the two of you were together again.
Dark presses a kiss to the corner of your mouth. “I can feel how your mind races. I think about it too, even now. Almost a century without you and I never stopped feeling your absence. I ached to hold you in my arms, to have you beneath me, to feel you tight as a vice as you come apart around me.”
A thought creeps into your mind and turns your stomach to lead. He had been by himself for so long, sure you were gone forever. You couldn’t blame him or be angry, but still the thought makes you sick.

He looks at you as if your words have burned him. When he speaks, his voice is firm, unwavering.

I'm not going to write a post about this myself, but amidst the fun of the three suitors in today's entry, if you're a first-time reader who may have psychiatric abuse, institutionalization, etc. as mental health or trauma triggers, I recommend checking out this excellent post by @crepuscol last year which marks off which Seward updates involve the asylum and doctor-patient interactions, as that part of the story involving him and Renfield starts tomorrow on May 25; I know someone last year also wrote detailed summaries of those entries for people who might not want or be able to read them directly, but I don't remember who it was - if anyone does, please add a link!
This could be an entire post itself, so I'll try to keep this brief, but Seward is arguably the most complex character in terms of morality in a story where everyone else is either Good or Evil, as he is ultimately capable of both great heroism and great harm, even if he harbours no evil intent; as such, he is a difficult character to discuss on many levels and things will get heated for understandable reasons, but it's important to remember that we should look at his character as a whole - neither sanitizing nor exaggerating his bad actions, neither erasing his good actions nor using them to excuse the bad ones - in good faith when analyzing him, as all aspects of him are important to the narrative and themes.
Also, since we're all doing Dracula Daily for fun, no one is obligated to read those updates if you can't or don't want to, and similarly, be understanding of those people even if you disagree, especially when a lot of the ableism in those entries still happens today, as psychiatric wards are the modern successor to asylums.

After having her sloop sunk by the Buggy Pirates and losing most of her worldly possessions in the process, the normally solitary mercenary Karimi Lionne finds herself teaming up with the rag-tag little crew that is the Strawhat Pirates to defeat them. She bonds with them far more quickly than she bargained for, and that quickly turns into a problem for the Kiku Kiku no Mi devil fruit user when she learns of Nami's plans to leave them high and dry, and Zoro issues a challenge at Baratie that he very likely won't live long enough to regret.
The stars were beautiful tonight, if nothing else.
Karimi did her best to focus her mind in on that, despite how they seemed to swim and swirl a bit in her vision, how her thoughts swam and swirled in her head.
How the image of his eyes seemed to have burned straight into her eyelids, to the point that she didn't want to do so much as blink.
How his words had burned into her ears, and she could still hear the threat behind them echoing around in her skull, hear his voice as clearly as if she were listening in on his thoughts at that very moment. Tomorrow, tomorrow morning, after the duel.
A heartbeat or a bloodied corpse.
Her own heartbeat raced into an absolute frenzy.
Part of her screamed loudly, so loudly that she could just slip herself right over the edge of the dock, to just slip into the chill of the ocean and sink down and never come up again.
She pulled her feet out of the water immediately, sitting straight up and wrapping her arms around her bended knees, shuddering the slightest bit.
His words. Not only his words, but his anger rang clear as day through her while she stared out at the night sky, out toward the horizon, wishing she could very far closer to it than to where she was right now.
There was every chance that she had just lessened Zoro's chances of survival rather than improve them.
She lowered her forehead to her knees. As the saltwater dripped away and her skin dried, the chatter of every person within a fifty food radius slowly began to raise in volume in her head. Closing her eyes a bit tighter, pulling her legs in closer to her chest, she bit her lip and focused.
Focused every ounce of her energy to making it stop.
Her own thoughts were too much right now, much less everyone else's.
And slowly—so slowly, but oh, so welcome, the silence came again. An audible sigh trembled its way through her lips.
Busoshoku haki. It wasn't fool-proof, but it worked when she needed it to. For the ten years she had spent with her grandmother, the older woman had employed it constantly to suppress Karimi's devil fruit abilities, but Karimi herself wasn't as proficient. She had less than two years of training in the art, from her time traveling with the Red Hair Pirates six years ago, and she couldn't do much with it except dampen her own abilities.
If she focused it in just behind her ears, focused it down to a pair of small points of energy and connected them together through her skull, then she had the sweet, sweet silence she so craved, that she could manage on her own on a day to day basis.
"So what did he have to say?"
The sound of Nami's voice, nearly monotone but with an edge of accusation to it, startled Karimi so badly that she nearly did slip off the dock.
"God dammit—"
Dear gods why couldn't everyone just leave her alone?
"Hey—!" Karimi grew instantly tense when she felt Nami's hand on her shoulder, steadying her before she could topple over. "Shit. Was it that bad?"
The accusatory note in her voice dropped away almost in an instant, and Karimi could only scoff, shaking her head. Her eyes briefly cut toward Nami when the younger girl took a seat beside her on the docks, looking at her in a mix of alarm and caution. "It wasn't great, no," she said shortly. Karimi shook her head, staring down at the gentle waves that rocked against the floating dock. She sighed, pressing her palm into one of her eyes against the sharp pain of a headache forming behind them. "You ever just want to...say the hell with it all and toss yourself in the ocean and be done?"
"Ah...yeah...." She noticed Nami reach around her and subtly pull the wine bottle away from her side. "Maybe we should just get back to Merry and—"
"I know what you're planning."
Nami froze in an instant at that, her eyes glued to Karimi's for a moment when she turned her head and looked over.
"I don't know what you're—"
"Don't bother," said Karimi, waving a dismissive hand, her voice still slurred. "You're leaving. And I get it. I would too in your shoes. If I could...." She swallowed. Exhaled a slow sigh that puffed out her cheeks slightly, looking at Nami, at how her brows furrowed. "I lost...everything ten years ago. My village. My friends. My...family." She shook her head. "I'd trade anything to have that back. So I get it. You'd trade everything too. But, look."
Nami froze when Karimi turned, reached out and put her hands on her shoulders, leveling her gaze with with hers.
"That—scrawny little shit back there in his silly little hat," she went on, nodding back toward the Merry, "I guarantee, if you go, he's going to chase you down, and he's going to do everything in his power to help whether you want him to or not, because that's what he does. So you need to think carefully about how you're going to proceed with this."
Nami stared at her for several long seconds, her eyes wide as saucers, her mouth hanging slightly open in shock.
And then she shoved Karimi's hands off of her shoulders, shifting away several inches. "How—how the hell do you—no." She shook her head, reaching down to her bag at her side. "No, why—" Karimi's eyes shifted down as Nami pulled an old, yellowed wanted poster out of her bag. "Why are you lying to everyone? Two billion berries?"
Karimi's gaze became glued to the wanted poster, and when she reached out to grab it, Nami pulled it back, holding it over her head.
"You think you can just, what, dye your hair a little darker, and no one's going to notice?" she said, raising her eyebrows. "Maybe the guys won't, but I'm not an idiot."
Karimi barely even heard her, her eyes glued to the paper flapping in the light breeze over their heads. She had kept that poster for the better part of eight years, kept it tucked away with her belongings, tucked under her pillow wherever she slept. She lowered her gaze, leveling her eyes with Nami's as she spoke through her teeth.
"Give. It. Back."
Nami's resolve faltered a little for a moment—but just long enough of a moment. Karimi was able to lash out her hand and grab the poster, pulling it to her chest and sighing slowly, her eyes slipping shut.
"Th...that's...not you?" she said slowly, and Karimi shook her head.
"It's my grandmother." She carefully folded the poster without looking at it again, slipping it into her pocket. "And it's the only picture I have of her." She glanced at Nami, trying hard, incredibly hard not to be mad at the girl as her gaze softened. "She was murdered right in front of me ten years ago."
"I..." She swallowed. "I'm...so sorry, I..." She shook her head. "You look...you could be her *twin*, I thought—" Once more, Nami shook her head, looking Karimi up and down quickly. "How do you know about my village?" she asked finally.
"I know a little about a lot of things." Karimi set to tugging her socks back on. "I...have a devil fruit ability. I can hear thoughts. I keep it suppressed the majority of the time because it would frankly drive me insane if I didn't, but..." She glanced at Nami, frowning apologetically. "When we fought with Kuro, I had to release it. I can't control what I hear. And your thoughts were a lot louder than anyone else's."
Nami swallowed, blinking several times. "You...can hear thoughts," she repeated quietly. Karimi shrugged a shoulder and gave a quick nod, pulling one if her boots back on now. "Th...that's..."
"Something that would have made you all a lot less likely to have me along had you known it off the rip," Karimi finished for her, sighing. Maybe not Luffy—it was incredibly likely he would have been in awe. "And for the record, I'm not using it right now. Shanks was able to help me learn to control it to some extent."
Nami nodded, standing with Karimi as she finished tugging her other boot on. "You...said your village was destroyed." She cut her eyes at Nami, taking her bottle of wine back when the orange-haired girl offered it to her. "Was it pirates?"
"Marines." She took a swig from the bottle, slinging an arm around Nami's shoulders. "There's good eggs and bad eggs in every batch. I don't like Marines on the whole, but there are a few exceptions. You don't like pirates," she went on as they crossed dock, "but I think you've seen enough to know that there are a few exceptions."
Karimi offered her the bottle of wine with a wry smile, and Nami took it, taking a drink from it. "Yeah," she agreed, staring up at the Merry as they stopped in front of it. "I guess there are."
Nami had to help her back onto the ship—she had definitely gone way too heavy on the drink tonight, something she rarely did and was sure she would be embarrassed about in the morning, but right now she didn't care. Right now, falling back into an empty hammock and tucking her hands behind her neck, all Karimi cared to give her time and attention to was the sweet release of sleep.
Hopefully a dreamless sleep, devoid of the annoyances and terrors of the waking world.
Hopefully devoid of her harebrained promise to serve a surly pirate warlord if he would leave an acquaintance she had met literal days ago alive.
Devoid of the heartbroken look on Luffy's face when he realized Nami was leaving—when he realized she was leaving.
Empty, dreamless, not a single thought of the face on the wanted poster she carried with her everywhere, the face she had watched break into desperate tears ten years ago, beg to let her granddaughter live, just let her live, she would give anything, she didn't care if they killed her—
Karimi's eyes snapped open.
And then they shut in an instant against the persistent and painful rays of the morning sun pouring throughtthe rounded window across from her.
As she did every morning, she started to focus, to employ her haki and drown out the mindless chatter in her head...and then she stopped.
She stooped as she heard the desperation, the horror outside the ship.
And she scrambled to her feet, stumbling out of the cabin to lean against the railing around the deck if the ship.
Just in time to watch Mihawk draw his sword from his back.
To watch him pull it down in a clean slash.
Watch Zoro fall to his knees and onto his back.
She sank down onto her own knees, exhaling a slow sigh, eyes wide and hands gripping at the railing around the deck. There, then, was her answer. There, in the form of one if her newest friends bleeding out in front of Baratie, clinging to the edge of life, certain to slip away at any moment.
"I hope you've already packed your things."
And she froze.
Karimi lifted her head slowly, meeting his yellow eyes as he stood over her, his arms crossed. Her brow furrowed as she glanced out toward the deck of Baratie, watching as the others surrounded Zoro, trying to keep him awake. She looked back at Mihawk, gritting her teeth.
"He's almost dead, you—"
"Almost, yes." He leaned his elbow against the railing if the ship. "And if he can't survive that, then he wasn't worth my time to begin with."
Oh.
Oh, the complete bastard.
He had left Zoro clinging to the edge of life, and he still expected her to keep up her end of the deal.
And yet...she had set the terms herself.
"F...fine," she said, pulling herself to her feet. She cast a glance down toward the docks, her heart clenching in her chest at the sight of Luffy kneeling over his first mate. "Just...let me say goodbye."
"Are you that close with them?" he asked, and the amusement in his tone was enough to boil her blood. She cast a glare over her shoulder in his direction, and he simply shrugged a shoulder. "Fine. You have an hour." He took a step closer, seizing her by her chin, his eyes searching hers for any sign of defiance. "Gather your belongings..." He leaned in closer, his forehead barely touching hers, the wide brim of his hat shadowing both of their faces. "...and your wits, and we'll be off."
His amusement was clear to her in more than just his gaze or his tone—Karimi could hear it in his head, hear just how pleased he was with himself as he left the ship.
And she didn't want to hear it for another second.
Karimi quickly employed her haki, shoved her walls up as high they could go, and watched him head down the docks, lowering herself back down to her knees to watch him through the railing. Her heart pounding, her bottom lip trembling, she knew she had no choice.
She had made her her bed amd now she had no choice to lie in it.
She had told him she would be his...and now she was.

A look at the Mantles of Before the Flood: Woe

We're here! The last stop, the last mantle out of six. Let's get into it, shall we?
Woe was the mantle of ill omens, but it was not maligned or malicious in its actions. It is often the worst of times that bring out the best in us. Woe sought only to bring the world closer.

Woe is the mantle of ill fortune, but I ask you not to assume their intent. While their game can be difficult to understand from the outside, they hope for the next sunrise the same as you or I do.
To play as Woe you'll need a standard 52 card deck.
Each round, if Woe has been called forth to act, they will pull five cards from their deck and attempt to create the best standard poker hand they can. They are able to discard cards and redraw once per round. The jokers in the deck also act as wild cards, and can be used as any suit or number.
Once their hand has been created, Woe consults their table to discover what omen has been called forth.
Because after creating 232 items for Nature and Nation, and 78 for Weal, we looked at Woe and thought. Well. It wouldn't really be fair at this point, would it?
There are 56 potential hands to be made, and 56 omens of ill fortune to be read.
My favorites include:
Pair 3 - A black cat blocks every path; bad luck adds up
Pair 6 - A haruspex eats an animal’s guts before the reading is finished; the future becomes uncertain
Three 8 - A crown cracks in two; what was solid becomes fragile
Pair J - Every adolescent forgets their own name; knowledge is forfeit
But these omens are not meant to be taken at face value, they are Woe's to shape and interpret as they wish.
Once Woe has decided on what the omen is for this round, Nature and Nation come together and discuss how their people come together to overcome this trial, and how balance is reinstated to the land.
Then Land casts their stones, and a new round begins.
