md's fun silly little top 10(ish) arts of the 2023!*
*pretend there's a fun cute doodled banner here (i was going to make one earlier and then i forgor)
doing a lil recap of my top 10 15 (it was supposed to be 10 and i could not narrow it down oops) best(? this is subjective as fuck i guess it's more like my personal faves) drawings of the year! *the crowd cheers* (it’s me I’m the crowd)
15: paradise by the dashboard light! i hate to rank her so low bc i spent ages on her but it seems i don't love the result that much anymore so :/ a for effort for me tho this was ambitious
14: cheer girl loml <33 not my best art technically by far but i went way out of my comfort zone for the background and the art style (for no good reason really) (i just wanted to do a comic book thing bc superhero vibes or whatever) (it did not come out the way i was hoping it would bc i think i got too frustrated) and we simply must acknowledge that. atog did things to me that i cannot explain
13: barbie meme brittana! not my best britt but truly sooo fun to work on. there's nothing quite like finding a fun rendering process and then never using it again (i don't even remember how i coloured this but i like it)
12: cowboy barbie brittana <3 they look good, they're about to kiss, cute outfits, pretty sunset, probably went overboard with the rim lighting, what's not to love? a banger, i think
11: i say a little prayer! i think the background is. questionable at best. but this is still really fun! i think i got possessed when i got to the uniforms bc goddamn they look good
10: klaine?? on this blog???? almost unheard of lmao i truly did not think i would like this one as much as i did. i'd consider ranking it higher if i wasn't constantly Unwell over brittana but again, i'm biased, and no one here should be surprised about that
9: pre-wedding kiss my beloved! with how insane i've been over this kiss it could perhaps be higher. i am gnawing on my desk as we speak i'm not even sitting at a desk rn
8: rutherchang x black swan!! ohhh u guys i don't talk about this one enough i think it's so pretty i don't even remember how i did the colours for it but rhgfdkngd?? love her, love pushing the glee x bts agenda, if any of u gifmakers are interested in making a mike chang x black swan lyric gifset i will love u forever
7: colour wheel challenge! busted my whole tiddies and ass for this one fellas. labour of love etc etc i think staring at the bright colours for so long made my eyesight worse and i'm ok with that
6: mistletoe brittana <33 easily the best instalment of this series by a long shot! recency bias (and also just. regular bias) made me rank her much higher originally but technically she is not the most intricate piece so she must sit down here
5: prom queen kurt! dare i say a girlslay on my behalf? i think i dare. every time i see it i think i should do more glosters (glee posters) and then i don't. i could tho they would be really cool (source: dude trust me)
4: churro kiss redraw!!! genuinely Not Sane over this! never have been, never will be! redraws are like crack to me and so is this kiss
3: furtana!! i neglected them for far too long this year but if neglecting them results in art like this i may have to do it again
2: heart kiss <3 if we're being really honest and vulnerable in the chat tonight i think this is technically my best of the brittana kiss screencap redraw things i've done this year? which i did not see coming but i guess practice means refining the process etc etc so. it makes sense ig. mwah to them <3
1: black or white gcv animation <3 it's not what i would call my best drawing (bc it's, yknow, not just one drawing) but it is what i would call the product of a very obsessive thought and some frantic art sessions. objectively it's the coolest thing i've done this year so it deserves the top spot. i'm proud of it i hope to glanimate more next year. also this isn't art but it's a relevant post that i still stand by months later
#md rambles#idk what this is kdfghk i'm so sorry it's 5am and i've spent the past hour ranking these and just saying shit#if i were more awake i would be more specific about actual art things i'm proud of. but i am not. so#sth sth made a lot of bangers this year i think sth sth vv proud of myself sth sth fun list bc i feel like it

HI HI HI here's my tips for skin :) i wouldn't call myself an expert or anything but. just some things ive learned!
this is what colors you get when you straight color pick from references. nothing wrong with it per say, she's quite cute! just a bit dull, yknow? there's a lot more you can do with it
this is the way my art professor has us do it when we color in pastels. it's a technique built for traditional, but works well through the screen! skin has an underlayer of red, no matter what shade it is. warm colors are best to lighten things up, and don't be afraid to add a touch of blue and brown to get the shadows! you can see that in the way i shaded the rest of an, too- her black shirt, for example, uses yellow highlights and purple shadows! don't be afraid to throw a color and blend it to death. (though, if you want a sharper edge, be careful not to smudge too much!) it's a very trust the process method- you have to build things to get the colors you want
and this is my way! (not The way. my way). (i got lazy on the rest of her so only the skin is different here) i tend to color pick to get a base, but almost always end up darkening the color. that goes in as the base. darker, cooler colors for shadows, and lighter, warmer colors for highlights. i also tend to add some pink around the cheeks/nose for blush, just because i think it looks cute. you can't tell unless you look, though.
no two areas of skin are the exact same shade. take your own hands, for example- the tips of your fingers are different than the base, and the back of your hand is different than your palm. you don't have to go crazy with it, but variation really helps!
and a general shading tip is to never use white or black- those aren't shading colors! they mess with color intensity. and, since you have access to literally every color digitally, you can always get what you want using different coolness/warmth values.
ummm for where to shade them... honestly, i'd recommend doing studies of lighting on people's faces to really get a handle on it. light is weird.
generally, there's usually pretty strong contrast on the nose? here, the light is from the bottom right corner, so it lights up that bottom edge. there's a bit of rim on the jawline, and the light bounces over the eyebrow bone line place. the shadow is cast on the left half of her face since the nose blocks it.
anime styles tend to not worry too much about strong face lighting, but it's definitely good to understand!
THANK U ACEY,,, very much appreciated :) this will help my colours look more natural 👍👍 also. whenever i try to shade it looks so blotchy and then when i blend it always looks over-rendered and Not what im going for..... drawing traditionally with pencil is what i have most practice with so im just not super used to... making skin look like skin. hh. if you also have any tips for the actual application of shading.... that would be appreciated...... 🙇♂️🙇♂️🙇♂️

and now for something completely different—
so I'm playing through ffxvi and I wanted to Rant about my experience so far so spoilers
so firstly, and not actually spoilers lmao, idk why this game makes my ps5 so warm. it's honestly not... *that* impressive graphically? which isn't necessarily a dig at it; I'll play anything as long as I can tell wtf is going on and it's fun to play. so idk if it's just yet another AAA game that isn't optimized well or what, though typically console games are *more* optimized... idk! just a gripe.
other than that, I'm seeing some Issues developing narratively... I'm not what I'd call an Expert Writer but yknow it's been noticeable so far. here are few thoughts and gripes with the story:
the inconsistencies in the story. the biggest one so far, and this is what I'd consider p big spoilers, is clive's whole "I gotta come to terms with the fact I killed Joshua" which is like... okay *fair* I suppose, but once he figured out that he was ifrit, yknow after killing benedikta, he... I mean he kinda *did* immediately accept it?? so... the whole "I gotta accept this" part was odd. I have heard tell that it was meant to represent a jungian acceptance of the shadow, or at least that's what people are alluding to in their own theories (and this is all secondhand btw bc I have the tags blocked til I finish)
to elaborate on what jung's interpretation of the shadow is for those who don't know: the shadow is essentially the suppressed subconscious, the things you don't want to acknowledge, for better or worse. it's most typically applied to things like traumatic events, but jung specifically does not commit to the idea that the shadow is *only* bad things. when you confront the shadow, the next step is to integrate the shadow to the conscious mind or ego, which you could argue was why they may have written it the way they did; clive isn't just acknowledging that he did do that (which he pretty readily did when he figured out he was ifrit's dominant) but he's also accepting it as irrefutable fact and integrating it to the ego so it cannot be repressed again.
now... having said that, the *problem* narratively that I'm seeing is that... well. Joshua isn't dead. clearly if Joshua had died... well, that'd be one thing. now they're saying "well ACKCHUALLY 🤓 he didn't die at all!" so that, to me, renders the entire "journey" pointless. what exactly is he accepting? if he didn't actually do it, why or how could he feasibly accept ifrit in that context? wouldn't his subconscious mind, his shadow (ifrit in this case) remain unincorporated? it's just very clunky and I think it was meant to show Clive as an unreliable narrator.... but there's really no one there but Joshua to confront this false accusation. and Joshua is MIA currently at the point I'm in so! who knows!
moving on, Jill is currently nearly a non-character at this point. what I mean by that is she's always just sort of... there. the only times she's shown depth is her speaking about hating herself for what she did with her powers while in captivity. even then, it doesn't appear to be given the attention smth like that deserves; we see a handful of flashbacks from when we fight her at the very beginning... and that's really it. I would like to see more but I have a feeling they will not be showing us
benedikta died way too early. she seemed like she was going to be a character of mild intrigue, but she was killed so very quickly. her and cid's past relationship (whatever that might have been) was only just elaborated on (we know cid saved her from slavery but little else), but I feel it could have been fleshed out beyond that. they spoke in broad terms about how she was and then what she became... but nothing I would consider to be substantial enough, given her connection to a major character. we also don't see enough of her and hugo, just that scene where they practically dry hump in the hallway. we know he cared a lot about her, esp during the scene with her uh. severed head? which... who did that, exactly? they blame it on cid, but we know he would not have done that. but anyway, fleshing out their relationship would have been nice
cid's death. now, it's not that I'm saying something as basics as "he could have lived" which, maybe? and it's not even that they did the whole "oh [mystery person] (it's Joshua) shows up to save them but he's too late!" trope crap. what bothers me the most about his death from a character perspective is his lack of *any* mention of the daughter he supposedly loved so much as he lay dying. now yes, up til that point, we only know that cid has a daughter via a sidequest that people could miss. but that in and of itself is an issue. why introduce that aspect of his character... and then never do anything with it while he was alive? why did they feel it sidequest worthy? they could have just slipped it in as banter or something, maybe gav teasing him or something?? anything?? basically the fact that he dies without nary an utterance of his so beloved daughter, not even her name, was a huge sour point to me. sure, you could argue that he wanted to get pertinent information to Clive as quickly as possible since he knew he was dying, but I would have been satisfied with just a whisper of her name (which I don't remember them mentioning during the sidequest?) and they could elaborate on it later, maybe in a follow-up sidequest??? maybe you find the letter he meant to send her back?? anything??? it just seems so weird from a characterization standpoint to introduce this concept of him melting for his daughter, his daughter being such a soft spot, etc, and then... never addressing it in a meaningful way when he's on death's doorstep
OK this is a dumb thing and not necessarily a negative thing but how the fuck did tomes, a geriatric librarian, survive the raid on the hideout but a bunch of younger, much more spry characters just croaked and couldn't escape lmao. IDK I LOVE TOMES DONT GET ME WRONG but it was just so... idk. funny? I also get it's a game mechanics contrivance as well, given that they built an entire mechanic around him, but idk I wanted to mention it bc it makes me laugh
that's about it for now. if you message me about this tho, pls no spoilers beyond the iron kingdom crystal raid. thank. 🙏
#final fantasy xvi#ffxvi spoilers#ff16 spoilers#final fantasy 16#as mentioned in the post#pls don't spoil beyond the mentioned point#thank#otherwise feel free to discuss any of the above#bc it's wild to me

Hii, for the artist ask game: number 4 and 10 is something I'd love to know :3
i wrote A LOT for this ask, sorry! i wanted to do the questions justice, yknow how it is.
4. piece you wish got more love?
Ive found from experience that original art tends to not do very well on social media, which kind of makes me sad. It's not much of a problem for me (because most of the stuff i post is fanart anyways) but i can't help but think that part of the reason i rarely ever draw original pieces or make OCs is because of the lack of feedback i get on social media. I know tumblr is supposed to be the fandom website, and maybe id have a different experience on another site, but it is disappointing when i post something original that I'm very proud of and it barely manages to get more than 20 notes, whereas something i like less easily surpasses 100 just because of the tags i put on it. i think the most recent example of this is this piece, which admittedly did get quite a few notes for an original piece, but definitely would have gotten more had it been fanart of the same caliber. this is also not to blame anyone or make anyone feel bad about not reblogging original art (god knows im guilty of that too, and art piggybacking off the popularity of other works of art are of course gonna get more notes), its just something ive noticed from my time on social media.
10. how do you deal with artblock?
i dont get art block very often, but when i do, its ANNOYING. it mostly manifests in me having a bunch of motivation for a part of my process that i cant get to without doing the stuff i have no desire to do (does that make any sense?). like, ill have a strong urge to render an artwork, but no ongoing WIPs that are at that stage, meaning i would have to sketch and color and shade a whole new piece before i could satiate that urge, or do the steps out of order which could mess up the flow and end look of a project. when i get like this, i find its best to try and translate those desires into different activities and take a step away from art. for example:
if i want to sketch, but nothing comes out right digitally, ill find a scrap piece of paper and a crappy pen and make thumbnails until i cant think of any other iterations of the ideas in my head. if one of them turns out good, ill take a picture and transfer it into my software, but only go over it a day or so later so i can have fresh eyes.
if i want to color, but i have no sketches currently ready for coloring, ill go into my photo editing program, find some random old photos that i never edited, and post-process them until i get something im happy with.
if i want to shade, but have no colored artworks ready for that, ill usually do a study of a photo ive taken, because most of the time me shading is really me wanting to see how light and shadow interact in certain scenarios. i actually did a whole AP portfolio on that because i liked shading and lighting so much!
if i want to render, but ive got no pieces ready for rendering, i find its easiest just to find a tedious activity where i can be a perfectionist but also feel like im the smartest person in the world. this generally turns into me cooking some big meal because its constantly engaging but also not that difficult. i know its probably weird for it to not have anything to do with art but this is just what works best for me, and i get the bonus of a nice meal at the end of it!
if i get the more classic kind of art block where everything sucks and nothing i make is good, i find its best to go back to the media that inspires me to make art, and not worry too much about having made something by the end of it. generally the media that inspires me ends up, well, inspiring me, and i can remind myself that art is a voluntary practice that i do because its fun, not because i want something out of it. if it doesnt manage to inspire me, thats okay, i can just tell myself im taking a break and live life for a bit.
i hope that was helpful, and i really enjoyed answering these questions! if anyone else wants to ask a question, the artist ask game is here.

yoooooo guess who decided to practice rendering for once
Plus the version including the lil doodles I made when I got distracted
Still trying to figure out how tf shirts work but a win is a win yknow *shrugs*
I wanted her to look like she’d taken the kitchen scissors to her hair in a fit of rage (or just pure boredom) and hacked at it without a proper plan so lemme know if I managed that effectively or if it could be improved upon
Please feel free to give me feedback, I yearn to better my skillz and fresh eyes are my best bet
(also if someone could tell me how to fix the horrible quality that would be muchly appreciated)

What inspired you to start up 3d modeling, and were there any guides out there that helped you get started? Also if you had one tip (or more) for beginners what would it be?
i was really into mmd as a teenager and wanted to make my ocs firstly, but my main push to from-scratch modeling instead of frankensteining models was that i wanted to put majima goro in different outfits and render them out in sfm or blender. those old men ruined my life. however a lot of my early learning was just messing around in pmx editor for mmd models and messing around in metasequoia 4, so i dont really have a ton of direct tutorials for beginners wanting to get into 3d modeling. the only tip i can give is to not use the donut tutorial and instead id recommend this absolute complete beginners tutorial series.
one more thing i can say is that dont trust people on the internet when they act hyperbolic about how hard blender is to learn. like holy cow it isnt rocket science, but of course theres a little bit of a learning curve because like. its a new skill. of course its going to be hard. but screaming and crying about how overwhelming the blender ui looks without even bothering to look at a tutorial does nothing but discourage you AND other people wanting to get into this form of art. practice and exposure and GOOGLING makes perfect yknow

hi ! i realized i had some more tips for stylization that i forgot abt until now so i figured i'd send u an ask :
1. using references and exaggerating the shapes. this is kinda hard 2 explain w/o a visual but i'll try my best lol.
yknow how cartoon men will have very triangle shaped bodies w/ wide shoulders and small hips and the women have very hourglass bodies?? i mean kinda like that. it takes a lot of trial and error to perfect this sorta thing, but its really all about finding the shapes u like. and it doesnt always have 2 make perfect anatomical sense, as long as it Looks like it does lol. i like to exaggerate the elbows (making them more prominent and pointy? ig?) and the shoulders, as well as facial features like eye bags and the sides of the nose (i really dont know how 2 explain that w/o a visual, soz)
i also dont just mean w bodies w this technique(?). practicing using exaggerated shapes w things like animals or inanimate objects is great if u dont wanna just jump straight in2 bodies (cuz , at least 4 me, thats kinda scary lol)
i also have a pinterest board full of references if u wanna look at that. i dont think theres much inanimate objects tho .. i should probably work on that myself lol
2. if u want a more painterly-esc style/style w/o lineart (smth like these > )
mix hard and soft edges when rendering. if u look , the undereyes and the shadow under the lips as well as the sides of the nose all have hard edges, where as other places have more softer and blended out edges. a tip i learned from an art yter is "wherever u would put a line in a sketch or lineart, put a hard edge." an example of that would b the jawline or smth like that.
also ! i dont knkw what art program u use for digital art (if u do that idk) but i use procreate and i used the medium hard blend brush (in the airbrushing section) for those ^ up there but i changed the shape to the 'brick' shape which u can find in the 'source library' option when u click 'import' on the shape editor. and for the recent byler art, i use the 'gesinski ink' brush (that i edited 2 have min opacity set 2 max in 'brush properties') for sketching + lining + for most of the colouring (w/ the skin i added blush w the medium hard blend brush i mentioned b4, the freckles w the 'driven snow' brush on super low opacity and the 'derwent' brush for body hair) if thats smth u wanted 2 know?
i hope these were more helpful tho <3 have a good day/night :)
Hi🤗! Thank u so much for taking the time to answer me TWICE🥺!!! The hard edge - sketch line thing is actually so eye opening😳! When going for a more realistic style digitally (i use Krita btw! But thank u for the brush names bc im thinking of getting an ipad one day even just for Goodnotes😭) i always kinda winged when to blend and when to leave a harsh or harsher line, this helps a lot! And I'll definitely take a look at your pinterest board, tysm for sending me a link🥺! Once again, thank u SO much and i hope u have a great day/night🥰💕!

".. So we can all agree that Kaito's a damn idiot right?"
"Atua damned idiot!"
"I had been under the notion that this had been established."Korekiyo joined, agreeing with both Angie and Miu's quips.
Everyone, even Kaede, would nod solemnly, The Pianist having huffed at how idiotic the man's actions had been. Though, she couldn't not understand why he dashed like a madman. Hell, if it'd been Shuichi in that situation, maybe she might have done the same. And considering the height difference they shared, she could totally have pulled off carrying Shuichi to safety. The tempting thought to lift Shuichi resided in her for a moment before she'd snap back to reality to form a plan.
"Well.. I-We should probably have a discussion whenever.. Kaito gets back?"Was he coming back? I mean, he'd been getting chased by the evil little cretin known as Monokuma, and he'd been really fast about it. Besides,
She wanted everyone to be present.. It'd maybe been best to just wait until tomorrow.. Something she really hoped was a current choice.
"Actually I think.. Maybe we should wait. We don't know if we can go to our room-...Where did Kirumi and Kokichi go..?"
"Kirumi went to go chase after them with the med kit.. But don't know where Kokichi went."Ryoma answered her question, looking off seemingly no where with a neutral expression. Kaede could only one look at the fun sized man in disbelief from how calm he'd been about this.. But then again, he'd..sort of been like that for as long as she was able to know the man.
"Of course that little shit takes advantage when turds hit the fan!"
"Not to be the bearer of bad news, but the akido master also took her leave."
"I-Why?"
"Well, Tenko did possess Anya's notebook yes?"
True but.. Really? Did she really think trying to give it to her now was a good idea? Rubbing her head in confusion, she'd plop her head onto Shuichi's to snap him out of his gaze.
"Hey, Earth to Shuichi!"
------------------
If Keebo's warm hands hadn't brought color to her face,
The current situation they'd been in would.
Not only has Anya been granted with the privilege of wearing Kaito's jacket(he'd probably not been getting this jacket back until.. needed-), but she was practically in this man's arms. His big.. Very nice feeling -
Wow okay Anya tone it down you're supposed to be baby.
Her face had been against this man's chest, so she could hear the all too familiar rhythm of his heart beating. The ability alone was way too intimate in her opinion for it rendered a darkening blush onto her freckled face, the freckles painted as if they'd been tiny constellations.
While she hadn't known exactly why they'd been running cause yknow, blood loss and kinda coming back to life, she very much enjoyed being held and didn't plan or want to fall anytime soon. Thought in mind, she'd wrap her little arms around the man's neck, head on his shoulder as she'd close her eyes in slight content.
Her eyes locked with Rantaro's for a bit before she'd break it with the help of her guilty conscious.
She was gonna have to face him and explain herself eventually but..
She didn't want to right now.
Not yet.
"K.. Kaito where are.. We going.?" She'd ask meekly, talking having been a literal chore with how less she's actually done it. The action felt foreign, forbidden even. #introvertsbelike-
-------------
*kirumi is running
Tenkrotch is running -
kokichi is being his authentic self -
I hope this didn't burden you thought the idea made sense
"Kaito's actions are not only rash but also pointless; the student notebook says Monokuma can't directly k-" Shuichi's mumbling had been briefly cut off the moment he had averted his eyes up from the floor, only to meet bright purple ones. "K- Kuhhh...." Shuichi's heart rate flat-lined, body going completely stiff before he suddenly bounced away, only now realizing their intimate position — intimate to him at least.
"K- Kaede, I was just thinking about the, um, here-" He took out his student notebook, eyebrows furrowing in light focus as he swiped through the numerous rules; eyes widening in recognition as he read the rule:
"Monokuma will never directly commit a murder."
-
Kaito had been too busy sweating his balls off from not only the running but the life threat(s) right behind them, so like the dumb, clueless, moronic himbo he was, he hadn't even realized Anya had spoken. "Your dorm! You'll be safe there!" How in any way would that protect Anya, you ask?
He doesn't know. He was thinking on the spot.
Kaito kept on running, even with the burning feeling in his legs, he was determined to make it to Anya's door, already readying himself to break down her door.
Rantaro would kill him, but in their current situation, Kaito had already felt the threat of his and Anya's life, so no, he didn't care.
As Rantaro opened his mouth to speak up again, a light bulb of realization flickering up in his head as he slowed his pace down. Monokuma couldn't even fucking kill them, so why were they running?
Oh right, Kaito had manhandled Rantaro's baby sister again.
Giving himself a quick breather, Rantaro readied himself to chase after Kaito again, only to nearly collapse on his face as he took a single step. The last thing he had seen before he really did collapse on his face, had been the flashes of blue and grey. He wondered if he was having a stroke, despite the only colours he saw being dull colours.
"Degenerate male! Let go of Anya this instant! Hand her over to me, I'm more capable!" Tenko screamed from the top of her lungs, legs going so fast that everyone who had probably been watching them, only saw a fast blur.
"And you have her notebook-" Kirumi added.
"And I have her notebook!" Tenko's deafening voice overlapped Kirumi's.
"Wh- No! I can do it! Just go fight off Monokuma!" Kaito swatted her away, pressing Anya closer to his chest as he hugged her as if she was his favourite toy about to be taken away. His eyes widened in slight terror as Tenko's figure slowly but surely, surpassed his; she had easily been a few steps ahead of him despite Kaito having an unfair head start.
"Hand her over now!" Tenko made a "Gimme." signal with her hands, a soul-piercing gaze glued on Kaito as they both ran.
All of a sudden, Kaito had not only been running from Monokuma but — that much was determined the moment he avoided Tenko's eager swipe for Anya.
"She's mine!" Kaito had spoken before he could prevent himself for doing so.
"She doesn't belong to anyone, you degenerate moron!"
These idiots hadn't even realized Monokuma had given up halfway through their childish conflict. Kirumi had caught him uttering, "I fucking hate my job sometimes," before disappearing off to harass more teenagers.
#Everyone#even Kaede#would nod solemnly#IM CRYING#*nods solemnly* yeah hes a fucking dunce#mod chia#rp#RantAnya

◀ STUDY: REX & NANITES ▶
Let me preface this by saying these are all thoughts and headcanons that have been building up over a long period of time. As of writing this post, it’s like 3 am, so beware spelling errors and stuff, and a bit disorganized in terms of structure. Buuut that’s how I roll, so ... Ready? Here we go~!
DO NOT REBLOG THIS.
So nanites. They’re in everything in the world of generator rex. Some have come to be incredibly dependant on them, and some try to reject them entirely. The world seems to still fear nanites bc they don’t know what all they can do or are capable of. Be it twisting other people’s DNA and mutating them, or what have you -- the facts are clear. Every living being has to come and learn to function with them. Now, most living things can function just fine if you remove or deactivate their nanites. They’ll just get reinfected by them anyways, they’re unavoidable; even if they replenish slowly, they usually come back. And you can survive without them entirely.
Unless you’re Rex Salazar.
Now, I know in the show they had Van Kleiss take his nanites a few times for drama’s sake, but if I have to be totally honest? I don’t buy that bullshit. It was just drama to be drama; we’re shown time and time again that Rex is essentially a fountain of beta nanites. On top of that, the nanites were said to have saved his life when he was young, and save his body and heal it on a regular basis. But I just ... cannot believe that Rex can survive long without the nanites. His body heavily relies on the nanites to regulate his bodily functions, they’re deeply ingrained into his body, and at this point, I’m convinced that all the injuries they heal are built out of nanites themselves. Kinda like .. replacement skin, an attempt at copying / regenerating the skin, I guess? There’s just no way his natural body / skin heals that fast on it’s own, even WITH nanites; the nanites can and will kill cells and make more just to help Rex out. It looks just like skin, it FEELS just like skin .. but is it actual skin? Nah. It’s probably like a synthetic replacement. Similar to that of 3D printed organs and prosthetics-- there’s even machines out there to make 3D printed flesh. Because, you know ... Rex’s body isn’t organic in it’s powers; even his healing of EVOs is a mechanical process, so there’s absolutely NO WAY that the way his body and organs heal from any injuries is organic. It’s much more calculating and more about machines and stuff. Though I do think when the nanites heal / construct scars and replacement flesh or organs, it’s slightly discolored; they also only exert themselves to do this for big wounds. He can still get scars, and the nanites give the illusion of scars when they heal his bigger wounds. So .. I dunno, I thought they could line up. Just a neat little food for thought there.
But if this is the case, then taking all his nanites could be absolutely deadly and bad for his health. I headcanon that the nanites can make changes to his body as they please; well, they do, all the time. One such side effect of this is turning his eyes from a deep natural brown to a pretty intense ruby red. Not really sure exactly why, but as a general hc, I think that whoever goes EVO has their eye color changed to something unnatural. But when you take away those nanites, his eyes are the regular ol’ chocolate brown. Now, why do I bring this up? Well, good question -- there’s a reason, and it’s kind of a creepy one. If his eyes revert to regular ol’ brown, what else can revert?
... That’s right. All the injuries they’ve patched up, with the synthetic / replacement skin made up of those essentially 3D printed nanite made prosthetics -- they’d likely start to deteriorate. At most, with all nanites completely removed, I’d give Rex a few hours tops ( like, maybe 2? 3? ) before everything they’ve fixed starts to just ... decay away or dissolve. All his old injuries are gonna be exposed, he might even DIE without it. Having his nanites stolen was a legitimately terrifying experience for him, because he didn’t know what would happen without them -- but that’s what would happen. He was lucky he didn’t find out.
Anyways, aside from that AND moving on... we know Rex is an endless fountain of blue beta nanites. However, we often see him healing yellow nanites, and we’ve seen wwhat happens when he has too many unstable yellow nanites in his body. Why DOES his body react this way?
The answer to it is honestly mildly horrifying.
On their own, his nanites attatch themselves to the unstable ones to pull them into Rex’s own body. That’s how he “heals” EVOs; however, they can always get reinfected by nanites again. He has to have specific offloading stations just to get the excess active nanites outta him, and it’s an INCREDIBLY dangerous process to do so. The locations at which his nanites are to be offloaded are EXTREMELY remote for a reason; one wrong step, and the whole facility could literally explode from how his nanites are and react. That little tangent aside, why do the excess nanites do this to him? Why is it so excruciating and painful for him? Why is it such a flighty process? Well, you see, Rex’s nanites don’t actually turn off the unstable yellow ones. Again, what they do is ABSORB other nanites, unless they’re so unstable Rex’s can’t do a damn thing to them -- that is, they’re mutated too far and flighty, therefore rendering them as incurables ( i.e. circe, cricket, skwydd, tuck, quarry ... you get the gist. ).
Rex just so happens to have a bad habit of waiting to off load his nanites before it’s too late or just before the above happens. He’s stubborn and he will push himself to limits he really shouldn’t because Providence forces him to. So when he overloads, too many yellow nanites in them, where do they go? ... haha, trick question! They don’t have anywhere to go. So you know what happens then? They resort to something extremely painful.
They stretch and solidify Rex’s skin against his will, because all the yellow nanites are trying to basically escape his body. It twists and pulses his flesh into and out of metal, as if it can’t decide where it wants to exit, and that’s precisely what it’s doing! They wanna rip outta Rex’s flesh prison, but they have no space to go to .. so they MAKE the space as best as they can. It’s why his flesh gets so baggy and turns to practically folds of metal or whatever when he overloads. It’s excruciating because he can feel the skin stretching and solidifying, and all of his senses are going haywire as if the nanites are tryina exit his body like that one parasite from an alien movie. You know the one. big pop culture reference and all. The reason they stop when he’s put to sleep, however, is because the nanites focus on his brain waves while he’s awake to make activity. If he’s asleep, so are they; they can’t be active if he’s not fully concious.
Which reminds me ... his nanites? Definitely have a mind of their own. His nanites can and will forcefully take over his body when he’s concious to talk as him or make him do stuff, and we’ve seen it happen several times -- it’s horrifying each time, really, but you can kinda interfere and hack into them to converse or have them build machines. They can and will attack any bad cells or anything they deem unnecessary to Rex’s body; it’s likely they don’t want their vessel to come to harm, so they have taken it upon themselves to protect Rex’s body for him on numerous occasions. I believe thiis is the same reason they won’t let Rex’s body die and forcefully revive him. Yeah, the life and fate of Rex are iin their hands, and they’re not letting him die anytime soon.
Rex has mentioned he’s been able to hear the nanites talking before and that he can talk to them; this leads me to believe they’re kinda more like.. micro aliens, yknow? Oh, and by the way... You can literally talk to the nanites if you want to. It’s a little difficult to catch them but it IS possible when they forcefully take over Rex’s body to do whatever they please. More on this later, but .. you can have conversations w them and everything. Rex just won’t know it or remember it bc he totally blacks out when they take over. So yeah.
Anyyywayyys. that’s all my thoughts and dumps on nanites for now -- might come back and add more later, but lemme know what y’all thought.

May’s Musical Director’s Commentary
Hey guys! I'm May. You might remember me as "the one who did those nifty chatlogs and the roster page" or "the one who did all the music" or "that one mod who never said anything." Los and Mints agreed to let me write up this "director's commentary" on the music I did for DECK. There's no secret lore tidbits in here or anything, but if you liked my music you might find this an interesting glimpse into the process.
A Note On Sampling
Sampling is the practice of using preexisting audio to make new music. When I talk about what I've sampled here, I'm only going to mention particularly interesting cases. Almost all of the music I've done for DECK features audio from Free Wave Samples, so I figure that's not really worth mentioning except here. It's the other stuff that's interesting. EarthBound was an influence on my decision to pull in a bunch of audio from outside sources. I've always admired that game's use of sampling.
The First Chatlog
The chatlogs have consistently been pretty fun to do. I knew from the start that I didn't want to edit this together by hand, so I wrote a Processing sketch to render the video. It's not the most elegant thing in the world, and adding new features is a massive pain, but it's a lot easier than putting these together any other way. All I have to do is swap out the script and background shader and write a new song and I can just let the program churn away rendering a new video. (Of course, fiddling with the shader until it looks presentable takes so long that it kind of eats into the time savings.)
There's not much to say about this one. The typing sounds were graciously provided by Mints. Those with careful ears might notice the instrument playing the chords in other chatlog songs.
The Second Chatlog
One of the only interesting things about this one: the melody is actually a musical cryptogram! What it spells out is an exercise for the reader. ;) The miscellaneous background sounds are all distorted versions of stuff I recorded myself one day when my film teacher let me wander the halls with a microphone. Film school has its perks.
Rio Hachimitsu's BDA
Doing the first body drop music was pretty intimidating. The body discovery music in Danganronpa has a particular instantly recognizable quality to it. If I wanted to go for that style, I'd have to get it down perfectly. (Otherwise I'd come off as a cheap imitation.) So I decided to be original. After school PSAs would be proud.
The melody here is probably pretty familiar to you all by now. Every BDA has used some variation of this melody because I'm a sucker for leitmotif. The melody itself is a slightly modified version of the Dies Irae. (Yes, I know I'm very pretentious, but being pretentious is fun.) This is also the first instance of what I call the "death rattle." I put that strange scraping sound into every BDA and execution for consistency's sake. You can see it as the moment the soul leaves the deceased's body or the moment the onlookers realize somebody's just died... or something. The really fun part is what it is - it's a bell tree! Yknow, those tinkly whimsical things. It's just been reversed and slowed down and drenched in reverb. It's fun how malleable audio is.
Minnie Minami's EXE
This was fun! Despite being a film student for a while, I've never had to write music to sync up with a video before. (I still haven't - I'm pretty sure the video was edited to match up with the music and not vice versa.) The overall tone of this one was pretty obvious. Of course a ringleader's execution would be accompanied by messed up circus music. Anything else just wouldn't be right. There's not really much else to say about it other than that it includes samples from my toy accordion and slide whistle.
Sampled:
An old recording of Auld Lang Syne
Yasu Kozakura's BDA
The body drop's usage of mirrors really hit me in the art gut, so I figured the BDA jingle should have something to do with mirrors. This is why the melody plays forwards and backwards simultaneously, because mirrors. (Some call that kind of thing a "crab canon.")
My incredibly good and quality cat piano is also in here. A stretched out meow recorded from it forms the basis of the background chord.
NANIKO's EXE
For this one, I gave the video editor three different tracks, one for each "segment" of the execution. I did this as a cop-out because I didn't want to have to try to sync my music up with the video - this way, the editor could mash it all together.
The segment with the mirrors was an exercise in what's called "phase music", where two lines drift out of sync with each other, creating different rhythmic textures over the course of the song. (Piano Phase and Clapping Music, both by Steve Reich, are two classic examples of the form.) For some reason, echoey piano lines phasing in and out of sync feel mirror-y to me. They also form a nice musical callback to the BDA.
Sampled:
Me switching frequencies on the radio
Sayuri Nishi's BDA
Shoutout to Free Wave Samples for having a heartbeat sound. I didn't want to try to make that sound myself with drums.
Kosuke Nakamura's EXE
This execution is significant because it's the first non-video one. Execution art wasn't my department, so I'm not going to speak on how that change affected the artists, but I found it liberating to be able to follow the more general emotional arc of the execution rather than being tethered to the pacing of a video.
When I asked Angela for guidance on where to go musically, we came to the conclusion that the proper genre would be "Tom and Jerry noir." That description alone is why I loved doing music for DECK - where else do you get the opportunity to write something with that as guidance? The most natural interpretation in my view was a song that starts out jazzy and segues into slapstick-esque classical to mirror the transition from the safety of noir to being mauled by a giant robot cat.
Also, the Slack notification sound is in there, since Los suggested a social media notification sound in the background somewhere. (Slack's basically social media for tech dorks, right?)
Sampled:
Slack
Tom and Jerry
The Missing BDAs
Unfortunately, I got preoccupied and neglected to do BDA music for the deaths in Chapter 4. Generally, there's not many interesting things to say about stuff that doesn't exist. The plan was to sample Pomp and Circumstance for Law N... but I didn't. Sorry, Froggy. I didn't have any other plans for this one.
Ukiyo-Maemi's EXE
This one relies so much on sampling it almost makes me feel bad. I got so much mileage out of the clanging percussion and the spooky background sounds that it's basically cheating.
Sampled:
My lovely girlfriend 💕
OFF
Akira Akatsuki's BDA
I was in a very percussion-heavy mood when I wrote this. (Can you tell?) Listening to the FLCL soundtrack had me jonesing for some dramatic cymbals.
Sampled:
Earthbound
Genko Junshu's BDA
Junshu's body was found in the Navigation Station. This called to mind sonar beeps and garbled radio messages and such. This is another one that wouldn't be nearly as interesting without the sampling. Hopefully this is transformative enough to not get me labeled a hack.
Sampled:
Earthbound
Law Kiyuu's EXE
This execution actually freaked me the hell out the first time I read it. Freaked me out for like a week - something about the combination of incredible writing and the subject matter. It honestly felt calculated to scare me specifically.
Anyway, I had a lot of fun with this one. I wanted to write something as unsettling as the execution it was accompanying. The intro is supposed to represent Law thinking he's already dead. Next comes his terror (evoked with the hilariously dissonant Altered scale), and then the final spooky arrhythmic section is supposed to be him being cut apart. (Note that part of the music drifts out of sync with itself to represent Law, uh, going to pieces.) The return of the piano is supposed to evoke the flashback section. That kind of piano sound always sounds spooky and/or sentimental to me.
Not much else to say now that I've dissected (heh) basically all of the decisions I've made for this one. I'm really proud of Law's execution song - it might be my favorite out of all the ones I've done for DECK.
Sampled:
Earthbound
Persona 2: Innocent Sin
The Doug Theme
Death Note
"It's a Long Way to Tipperary"
gamer butt song
Frogbot's EXE
The original plan for this one was start this one off with a hocket-y medley of all the previous body drops and executions. However, it would have been really tedious to export then import all the relevant instruments, so I didn't do that. Instead I remixed the typical BDA theme. It's supposed to convey the shift from FrogBot's reign of despair to the triumph of getting them executed. I realized part of the way through that this segment was far too triumphant given how many people died and the fact that the submarine is about to explode, so then I just ended it by lingering on a diminished chord. I'm not a very subtle person. Frogbot's execution lacks the death rattle 'cause there's no horrifying realization that one of your classmates is dead. (Exercise for the reader: find where I hid the Flintstones theme in this song. Good luck.)
Conclusion
DECK was a lot of fun to work on. I wrote some extremely messy code, made some sick as hell videos, and wrote some pretty baller music. I got to see some wonderful artists do their work, and I got to skim some pretty intense roleplaying. Thank you to everyone who said nice things about my music and to the mods for being really cool dudes. Special thanks to Mints and Los for letting me put this long-winded rant on their blog, and thank you for reading this whole thing.
See you on the flip side, y'all.

The Riddle of the Sphinx: 14x12 Prophet and Loss
First, thanks to @verobatto-angelxhunter @gneisscastiel @magnificent-winged-beast @emblue-sparks @mrsaquaman187 for inviting me to guest this week, as part of their ongoing SPN #Metafest project @metafest
along with several other guests: @bluephoenixrises @poorreputation @agusvedder @amwritingmeta @savannadarkbaby @prairiedust and
@norahastuff
I’m going to guest meta about the Riddle of the Sphinx.
Here is creepy Tony Alvarez drowning his first victim.
Despite an opening dose of Bucklemming torture-porn (ugh - although tbf there was a narrative point, as the drowned girl was a mirror for Dean, just like the slain first-born son and the dude who almost got barbecued were - more on that later...)... So, yeah, despite that, I was thrilled to see this in the visual narrative architecture - the Sphinx Machine Shop, where Tony does his mangled prophecy induced killing.
The Sphinx, as you know, is a fearsome part-woman, part winged-lion beastie, in Greek mythology, who was famous for guarding the entrance to Thebes and asking travellers to solve the answer to a riddle in order to gain safe passage to the city. If they failed, she devoured them.
She is tied in mythology not just to puzzles and their solutions, but to fate...
Here is the Sphynx of Naxos, from the Temple of Apollo at Delphi (560 BCE)
Image from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sphinx_of_Naxos
The Temple of Delphi was the site of the Oracle of Delphi, who was the High Priestess Pythia (a transferrable role) famous for her prophesies, which came to her in trance-states, supposedly from the God Apollo.
You see the link to SPN’s own Prophet role here....
The Sphinx also, famously, appears in Sophocles’ play Oedipus Rex, which became the basis for Freud’s also famous (and relevant a bit later) “Oedipus complex”. Sophocles didn’t invent the myth, but his telling is its most famous rendition.
Despite his other misfortunes, Oedipus doesn’t get devoured by the Sphinx, because he solves her riddle, a popular rendition of which is:
“What goes on four legs, on two legs, on three, and the more legs it goes on, the weaker it be?”
The answer, is - a human (baby, adult, old person with a stick).
Oedipus’ story is a classic story about fate, just like Appointment in Samara (re-worked in an SPN episode, 6x11, but originally an old Mesopotamian tale) which @mittensmorgul and I were talking about just recently, in relation to themes of fate vs free will in SPN (specifically in relation to the role played by Death - see here for the discussion:
http://drsilverfish.tumblr.com/post/182454009599/mittensmorgul-drsilverfish-mittensmorgul )
Oedipus’ story is a (f-d up) family drama - rather relevant to our very own Family Winchester [no, NOT because this is all about either of the boys wanting to sleep with Mary Winchester - thanks Dr. Freud - although, come to think of it, Dean did say she was hot in 4x03 In The Beginning :-)]
14x13 Lebanon promo shot
When baby Oedipus is born, his father King Laius receives a prophecy that his son will grow up to kill him, and so, he sends a shepherd to expose the baby on the mountainside to die, before that can happen. The shepherd however, not being an asshole, saves the baby, and raises him secretly as his own.
Oedipus grows up, and he eventually learns from the Oracle at Delphi herself (see above) that he is fated to kill his father and marry his mother. Believing the shepherd and his wife are his true mother and father, whom he loves, he leaves his home in the mountains for the city of Thebes, determined to defy the prophecy.
On the way, he meets a quarrelsome old man on the road, they fight, and Oedipus kills him:
When he gets to Thebes, he finds the King has been slain, by persons unknown, and the town is at the mercy of the Sphinx. Oedipus, by guessing the Sphinx’s riddle, obtains safety for the town and is, in gratitude, appointed King himself and given the widowed Queen, Jocasta’s, hand in marriage.
All is well for a bit, until a plague descends on Thebes, and Oedipus is told that to save the city, he must avenge King Laius’ death. So, he goes sleuthing, with the extremely relucant help of his seer Tiresius, and to his horror, discovers that he is the one who killed the King (that old dude on the road to Thebes all those years ago), that he is the King’s true son, and has, therefore, killed his father and, in marrying Queen Jocasta, married his mother and committed incest, fulfilling the prophecy he set out to escape from. He promptly blinds himself in horror. Poor ancient Greek dude.
The Chorus laments the power of fate
O heavy hand of fate! Who now more desolate, Whose tale more sad than thine, whose lot more dire? O Oedipus, discrowned head, Thy cradle was thy marriage bed;
http://www.gutenberg.org/files/31/31-h/31-h.htm - Project Gutenberg translation of Oedipus Rex.
A reference to the story of Oedipus and the Sphinx is extremely pregnant right now in the SPN narrative, for two reasons:
1) Fate vs Free Will
2) The Ghost of John Winchester
1) Fate vs Free Will
Dean thinks his interpretation of the book Billie handed him in 14x10 Nihilism - apparently the only death of his in which AU!Michael doesn’t take over his meat-suit and burn the world - means he has to sink himself to the bottom of the ocean, in the Ma’lak (angel) box and that’s “fate”.
Like Oedipus, there is no escape.
However, 14x12 tells us two things. Firstly, by analogy - the prophecy is wrong. Alvarez thinks he is carrying out the prophetic Word of God TM by recreating a twisted version of the Plagues of Egypt sent by God in Exodus:
1) The slaughter of a first-born son
2) Drowning in the Red Sea
3) Fire out of Heaven
(all of which are mirrors for what Dean thinks is his “fate” right now: death of a first born son; being drowned forever at the bottom of the ocean in the Ma’lak box; being consumed by the AU Archangel Michael’s Heavenly grace/fire).
But it’s a garbled message, received as a result of Prophet Donatello’s comatose scramblings.
Secondly, screw prophecy - against the odds, Dr. Sexy of the Lord (yeah - you know Dean thought it) is able to revive Donatello, thus preventing further scramblings (aka wrong prophesies).
CASTIEL: “Dean - if there is a spark, a hope, then I have to try.... you taught me that!”
I loved that line, with its resonance all the way back, like a skein of blue grace, to the Apocalypse Mark One, when Dean convinced Castiel, in Zacharia’s (also due to return in 14x13 Lebanon) “green room” in 4x22 Lucifer Rising, to disobey Heaven for the sake of humanity (Yes, Dean, an angel did fall for you...).
In other words, just as the Winchesters beat their “fate” to be “angel condoms” for Michael and Lucifer last time around, by “tearing up the script” and “making it up as they go” (4x22 Lucifer Rising) thanks to the help of rebel angel Castiel, so they can do so again.
2) The Ghost of John Winchester
In the SPN world’s worst kept spoiler, we know John will return next week in 14x13 Lebanon. We’ve been meta’ing about the ghost of John Winchester haunting the SPN narrative for... forever.
Here is some meta of mine on the subject from S12:
http://drsilverfish.tumblr.com/post/158388550099/john-winchesters-ghost-and-the-haunting-of-s12
John is explicitly recalled, during the brothers’ (beautifully rendered) car conversation in 14x12:
DEAN: “You ever think about when we were kids?”
SAM: “Maybe, yeah, sure, sometimes, why?”
DEAN: “I know I wasn’t always the greatest brother to you.”
SAM: “Dean, you were the one who was always there for me. The only one. I mean, you practically raised me.”
DEAN: “I know things got dicey, you know with Dad, the way he was... and I just.... I didn’t always look out for you the way that I should of. I mean, I had my own stuff, y’know, and in order to keep the peace, it probably looked like I took his side quite a bit. Sometimes, when I was away, you know it wasn’t cos I just ran out, right? Dad would, he would send me away, when I really pissed him off. I think you knew that.”
SAM: “Man I left that behind a long time ago, I had to.”
AU!Michael, I’ve been arguing since the start of the season, is a mirror for Dean’s self-repression and for John Winchester. See:
http://drsilverfish.tumblr.com/post/179463975289/shirtlesssammy-14x03the-scar-meta-writers
John was one of the major causes of Dean’s self-repression, as illustrated in the convo above, where it’s clear Dean had to grow up too fast to become a substitute-parent to Sam, where he was often obedient to their father to “keep the peace”, and where he was also often, unreasonably, punished by his father in the process (such as, as we already know, when he was sent to Sonny’s after stealing food for Sam in 9x07 Bad Boys).
According to psychoanalysis, we always internalise psychological constructs of our parents - Freud calls them imagos. So the Riddle of the Sphinx, for Dean, is how to kill (or rather, lay to rest) the ghost of his father (whom AU! Michael is a mirror for) and with it, the self-repression which has wounded him so much, psychically, since childhood, without letting it kill him too.
Nick, of course (general shudder) also serves as a John Winchester mirror in the episode - his obsessive revenge quest for the slaughter of his wife (aka mirror Mary Winchester) by Abraxas, led to something she never wanted - damage to innocents along the way (aka mirror innocents, Sam and Dean).
To Conclude
The answer to the Sphinx’s riddle, the one that helped Oedipus avoid being devoured by her was.... humanity.
Light Sphinx, 2015-2016, Mixed media (inc. foam, hand stitched fabrics, LEDs, beads, synthetic hair), 74 x 32 x 54 cm by Tarryn Gill
https://tarryngill.com/Light-Sphinx-Shadow-Sphinx-2015-16
Dean IS the symbolic representation of humanity (which is why Amara was so fascinated by him, and let’s not forget Metatron’s words about Castiel in 9x22 Stairway to Heaven - “He’s in love with.... humanity”).
Our first-born Winchester son just has to believe what this episode showed him - prophecy can be wrong.
His “fate” - to die, to drown forever, to be consumed by holy grace/fire, to remain trapped by the ghost of his father, by his own self-repression, by AU!Michael, by the Ma’lak box (aka, in subtext, the closet) is NOT the “Word of God”.
And killing one’s father doesn’t (as it did for Oedipus) have to mean damnation, if, the way one does it, is symbolically, by laying his ghost to rest in one’s heart and mind (hello upcoming SPN 300 14x13 Lebanon).
Freud believed the resolution of the Oedipus complex (for boys) was identification with the father (and no, we don’t have to concur with Dr. Freud). Dean has actually been on an oppositve journey, to get out from under his father’s shadow.
The Jungian solution, which the S14 narrative is offering to the metaphorical Riddle of the Sphinx, is, to turn around and embrace the Shadow-self (the parts of oneself one has repressed) and in so doing, to evolve - to become more fully human.
So, a final salute to Jerry Wanek and team, and the ever wonderful SPN set dressing narrative, for The Sphinx Machine shop!

Ending the Session (Chapter 2)
Fandom: Yu-Gi-Oh! Characters/Ships: Gemshipping (Thief King Bakura/Ryou Bakura); Ryou Bakura, Thief King Bakura, Atem, Yugi Mutuo, Zorc Necrophades Rating: T Length: Chapter 2 / 3; 2400 words
Summary:
Into Ryou’s lonely apartment comes a spirit, an ancient power that speaks and manifests through the Ouija board kept beneath the bed. It calls itself Tou, and claims to be human. Ryou believes.
Read on AO3 Previous Chapter – Next Chapter (Coming Soon~)
Chapter Two: A King of Thieves
For nearly a week, Ryou spoke to the spirit daily—sometimes twice daily. Yugi commented that Ryou seemed happier, when they met for coffee. Ryou shrugged off the comment, mumbling some half-truth about doing well in his classes. In reality, his homework hadn't been getting done with quite the level of diligence he usually held himself to.
Ryou hadn't learned much about how the spirit, Tou, had lived, but it didn't much matter. He had learned, in his estimation, many far more important things. Tou was pragmatic, for instance, and jaded, but had an unexpectedly lively sense of humor. At first Ryou had struggled to detect the spirit's jokes, through the toneless board. But he'd also grown far more attuned to the feel of Tou's presence, in his apartment, and fancied that he could sense Tou's general emotional state.
It worried Ryou that the spirit would grow suddenly tense, at times; would flicker with what appeared to be anxiety, or at least agitation, and usually request and end to the session. While Tou always offered fatigue as the explanation—and sometimes it was; Ryou could feel the weight of the spirit's exhaustion—those times were different. Ryou wondered what could cause a spirit like Tou to feel that way, and decided he had no basis with which to even form a hypothesis.
"i know whats keeping me here..." Tou had said, "and its not a thing you can help me deal with..." Ryou wished that that weren't true, but accepted it nevertheless, and so didn't pry.
Ryou stood, one evening, at the stove, preparing diner. The apartment was quiet. He was looking forward to speaking to Tou, later, but for the moment was quite enraptured in his cooking. The sizzling strips of meat made a pleasant crackling, and Ryou hummed along with the sound. They filled the apartment, too, with a heady aroma of meat and herbs, and Ryou bent in over the stove to assess whether or not he needed to add more of any particular seasoning before checking his rice on the rear burner.
The pepper grinder, on the far side of the counter, struck the ground with a jarring crash, and Ryou jumped. He looked around; heard nothing, save for the sizzling of beef in the pan. He glanced down at the pepper, rolling pensively across the floor.
"Tou...?"
The pepper grinder picked up speed suddenly—bumped into Ryou's foot. He smiled.
"Give me a second, okay?" Turning back to the stove, he lowered the heat; checked his rice again, and then scampered from the room. When he returned, he had the Ouija board tucked under his arm. He placed it beside the bloodied cutting board on his counter and opened it.
"Hello, Tou!"
"your dinner smells maddeningly good...” was the immediate reply, and Ryou chuckled.
"Is that all you wanted to tell me?"
"its important...” The pointer moved rapidly, a challenge to read, even for someone as practiced as Ryou. "youre a really good cook...”
"I didn't realize you could smell."
"i can hear and see and smell... i just cant touch or taste... no body yknow..."
"Fair enough."
"i want some of your dinner so badly i could die..."
"I wish you could join me," Ryou said, honestly.
There was a pause, and Ryou tilted his head; waited patiently. He could tell that the spirit hadn't left.
"thanks for talking to me...”
"Of course!" Ryou said, surprised. "I'm happy you want to talk to me, too!"
"its not so common for humans to contact us... not so common for them to be so open either... usually they get freaked out the first time they manage to make contact and then never do it again and usually theyre these stupid kids drunk or just real jerks not the likable type at all...
It was a long, rambling message, and Ryou waited for the pointer to still. Then he said, "I've used the board a lot. I've gotten responses, before, but never a spirit who's come back more than once or twice, let alone actually initiated the contact. It's really nice!"
Again, there was a pause, and when the pointer moved it did so rather slowly. "how do you know im not a bad spirit...”
"I don't, I guess, not for sure. But I don't think you are."
"when i told you i was called tou that was a bit of a lie... half a lie...”
"Oh?" Ryou tilted his head; waited for the spirit to continue.
"i was called touzokuo... king of thieves...”
"Oh. That's a cool title."
"cool you say cool...” The pointer moved so fast it almost jarred Ryou's hand free, and he jumped. "hahahahahaha... youre weird you know that... king of thieves is what they call a bad guy... i was a bad guy when i was alive...”
"That doesn't mean you're a bad spirit, now that you're not alive," Ryou said patiently, and the pointer fell still. There was the faint smell of something beginning to burn.
"youre a kind person to say that... but you should be careful... i had quite a reputation as not only a thief... but a killer..."
"I don't sense any blood-lust from you now, though," Ryou said, and the spirit was silent. "You aren't a bad spirit. I may not have any way to know, but I'm sure of it."
The pointer stayed still, for another moment, and then moved toward "goodbye." Ryou hurried to ask another question before it got there.
"What was your favorite food, when you were alive?!" he blurted—the first thing that came to his mind. To his relief, the pointer stilled.
"roast pig..." was the slow response, after a beat. Ryou smiled, relieved.
"Really? I'm more of a dessert person, myself, but savory foods can be really good. Especially when you're hungry."
"aha... thats very true..."
"Were you hungry, a lot? Is that why you became a thief?"
"dont try to make excuses for what i just told you..."
"I'm not," Ryou huffed, a bit indignant. "I just want to know you better. I want to understand you."
"i was hungry..." the thief said, after a moment. "i was angry too... i wanted to get back at the whole world..."
Ryou considered that, then said, "I wish you could join me, for supper."
"your foods starting to burn... you should get that... itd be tragic to ruin it..."
Ryou nodded, but as he went to leave the board, some near-physical force held his hand to the pointer.
"r-y-o-u" the spirit spelled out, with a force that surprised the human boy. "end the session... never leave without saying goodbye... youve used the board enough to know that..."
Ryou hesitated, then nodded. "Sorry. You're right, of course... Goodbye, Tou."
And the pointer, in response, moved to, "goodbye".
... ... ...
Ryou stifled a yawn; popped a piece for chocolate into his mouth, and took a swallow of coffee. The apartment felt unusually empty—devoid, in a rare moment, of spirits. And, though he knew he should sleep, Ryou had to take the opportunity to do research while he had the apartment to himself. So there he sat, at his desk, the light of the computer screen tinting his white hair light blue.
"King of Thieves... Thief King... Touzokuo..."
So far, he hadn't found any historical figures matching those titles, but they were sufficiently vague enough to render standard search engines all but useless.
It was three in the morning; Ryou took another sip of his coffee.
'Didn't he say... wait, that garbled message...'
Scrabbling through some papers beneath his bed, Ryou found the notebook he'd had during his first conversation with the spirit that called itself Touzokuo. He returned to his desk, then looked at the word that hadn't made any sense, at the time; the word he'd assumed to be some sort of spiritual typo: nedjem.
Ryou ate another piece of candy; it had a pressed brown sugar center inside of milk chocolate, and he let it melt in his mouth, feeling the graininess as he rubbed his tongue against the roof of his mouth. He typed "nedjem" into the computer, and hit enter.
At first, nothing interesting showed up—the search engine tried to autocorrect his query to needed. So he tried "meaning of word nedjem," and hit enter once again.
A... carob pod...?
Ryou's eyes widened slightly as he stared, surprised, at the hieroglyph that had appeared on his screen. He clicked on the first result, and read aloud, "Ancient Egyptian hieroglyph signifying 'sweet,' represented visually by a carob pod and thought to be said as 'nedjem.' One instance documents a doubling of the symbol, presumably read 'nedjemnedjem,' to indicate a pleasing concubine."
Ryou took a deep breath; tasted the sugar thick on his tongue, and took a drink of coffee to wash it down.
Ancient... Egypt...
It made sense, the more he thought about it. Though he'd passed off the spirit's reference to Anubis, Anubis being a fairly well-known symbol of death even in modern times, it made a lot more sense if he considered it as an influence of the spirit's original culture.
So what did I ask? Why "nedjem"?
He had asked what the spirit was called—Tou. He'd asked what the spirit was—h-u-m-a-n. He'd asked if the spirit had made contact with the living before—once or twice.
Ryou ate a marshmallowy piece of candy that got stuck in his teeth, and momentarily distracted himself getting it out with his tongue.
Then, it struck him.
"youre odd... different from others ive talked to..."
"Really? How so?"
"n-e-d-j-e-m"
Ryou's hands flew to his face, and he tried not to read into the odd answer, now that he knew what the long-extinct word meant. After a few more fruitless internet searches, he'd worked himself into enough of a frenzy that the mere thought of sleep was impossible. And, the internet having failed him, he reached for his cell phone and knocked his pencil holder off his desk in the attempt.
... ... ...
"Hnn..." Yugi Mutou raised his head as his cheerful ringtone cut through the silence. He dragged himself to the side of the bed, ignoring the bleary, angry muttering of the man sleeping beside him, and observed the time on the glowing screen—3:47—and the name. "Unh... Ryou-kun...? What is it...?"
"Yugi-kun! Ah, I'm so sorry, did I wake you?"
"Ryou-kun, it's almost four in the morning..." Yugi stifled a yawn; listened to his friend squeak and shuffle frantically on the other end of the line.
"I-I'm so sorry! I-I forgot, for a second... haha! I can call back tomorrow, if—"
"Ryou, I'm awake. What's up?" Yugi settled in, arms folded beneath his chin and atop his pillow.
"Ahh—! O-Okay, then... well... has Atem ever mentioned a legendary Thief King, from Ancient Egypt?"
"Thief King?" Yugi echoed, and was startled when his bed-partner bolted suddenly upright. "Atem! What's—?!"
"Who's on the phone, Yugi?"
"Great Ra..." Yugi breathed, and Ryou made a questioning sound. "Hey, Atem just woke up... Do you want to talk to him?"
"Oh Yugi, that would be wonderful! Are you sure he wouldn't mind?"
"Give me the phone, Yugi," Atem commanded, though his eyes were shadowed with sleep and his hair was sticking out to the side, as opposed to his usual vertical spikes.
"He wouldn't mind at all," Yugi told Ryou, and then held out the phone to his boyfriend.
"Oh! Atem! Sorry to bother, at this hour, I just... got all caught up, and—"
"Out with it, Bakura," Atem commanded, and Ryou squeaked. "What's this about the Thief King?"
"I just... well, you're an Egyptologist, after all, and that's where you're from, anyway, so I figured if anyone would know anything about—"
"Where did you hear about the Thief King, though?" Atem demanded, and Ryou swallowed audibly.
"So there is something..."
"Bakura, tell me where you heard that title," Atem said, his voice low and almost threatening. Yugi pulled worriedly at the sleeve of his nightshirt.
"I just... I mean... a friend. A friend mentioned him." Ryou's voice was shaking.
"Don't lie to me, Ryou Bakura."
"Atem, don't scare him," Yugi implored. "You know how he is..."
"O-Okay..." Ryou began hesitantly. "Y-You know how I like to play around with Ouija boards, occasionally...?"
Atem scrambled up; stumbled from the bed, much to Yugi's increased distress, and cursed as he tripped over a discarded piece of clothing. "You didn't. Tell me you're not going to say what I think you're about to say, Bakura. Tell me you don't have the spirit of the Thief King in your apartment."
"Well, not at this exact moment, but—"
"Great Ra!" Atem fumbled with his coat; threw it on over his nightclothes as Yugi began to follow him from the bed. "Okay, Bakura, I need you to leave that apartment immediately, do you understand? I'm coming to get you."
"Wait, what?!" Ryou spluttered, and Yugi called out his boyfriend's name in confusion. Atem ignored them both.
"This—this is why Ouija boards have a bad reputation, Ryou," Atem continued, hopping into his shoes. "You've gone and summoned something bad, now, something very bad, and—"
"Tou wouldn't hurt me!" Ryou objected suddenly, and Atem cursed.
"Listen to me, Ryou—the so-called Thief King is a demon-god. You know I was a pharaoh in a previous life, don't you? I lived during the same time as the Thief King."
"You knew him?!"
"I killed him, Bakura, when he tried to kill me! After he—!" Atem cut himself off; muttered a curse. "He isn't human—he's a demon, as I said, a demon called Zorc, who took on human form to kill the pharaoh—to kill me, and those I loved."
"That doesn't make any sense!" Ryou objected.
"He's deceiving you! He's the best damned liar I've ever met in any lifetime, believe me, and now he's lying to you! I'm coming over, okay? You stay on the phone with me now, and—Bastet!" Atem cursed.
Yugi—a few steps behind him, on the way to the door—yelped. "What?!"
"Little asshole hung up on me!" Atem fumed; handed Yugi his phone. "Try to call him. We're going to his apartment."
"Atem, is he... really in danger...?"
"Not unless he's done something really stupid like opened a portal..." Atem muttered, flinging the door open and flying down the apartment stairs, Yugi on his heals. "Gods... let him be safe... I can't lose another friend... not to that bastard Thief King... not in this lifetime..."

sonic forces me to analyze the game
this is by no means a full, in depth review of sonic forces. however, since im working on a Forces au i think its only fitting to talk about my personal gripes with the game. just to be clear, i dont hate sonic forces by any means! there are some really neat concepts about it that i enjoy, which ill include my thoughts on as well! though with that said, theres a lot about it that could have been dealt with better. this post is gonna be a bit long and messy, sorry!
now i cant speak for what the gameplay controls itself are like since i havent actually played it with my own hands, so my primary focus will be the story and general format of the game. everything under the cut!
ill start by saying that in hindsight, i think the general premise of the game is actually really neat (had the war framing of the plot not been so overly glorified and bland. more on that below). eggman taking over most of the world is very reminiscent to the initial circumstance of mobius in the early archie sonic publication. it seems especially reflective of the comic in the fact that sonic forces takes place on a planet setting more akin to that of Mobius than that of Sonic’s World/Earth, the difference being the lack of human beings aside from Eggman. while this does somewhat bother me for the fact that it paints an inconsistency with the setting, im also all for the planet being strictly Mobians + Eggman again tbh. the concept of sonic being on earth populated by humans, complete with a mock version of the united states, never really settled well with me. it always felt like just a means to make sonic more relatable, which is true, but not done because it made anything more interesting. a problem that then arises is that the origins of shadow and silver/blaze would be radically different or at least would need some retcon alterations to make sense...but thats a topic for another day
overall, looking past the inconsistency with the setting and its implications, i enjoy how the premise of the game feels like going back to the basics. but even the premise still has its problems...which is never a good sign, and this point practically sealed forces’s fate of inconsistency: the theme of war and how it frames the story is so, so poorly written
starting with whats presented at the beginning of the game, sonic is captured by eggman as a prisoner. if the writing had just left it at that, fine. however, the exposition goes on to say that sonic has been there for six months being tortured...and that tails has completely lost it. again id be fine with this - the theme of war is a darker one so these two events would make sense in this circumstance. however, that tension is just totally lost in a matter of a few episodes. you rescue sonic who is just as cheery and jokey as ever, somehow able to fight a boss despite being supposedly locked away and tortured for six months
of course i understand that its not like they could give sonic ptsd and make him look tortured and weak and so on - but why even mention the torture thing at all? the same problem is apparent with the first cutscene with tails. tails is hardly given enough time to seem like he has "lost it". i will say though that tails WAS given a bit more of an emotional response to work with than sonic overall. particularly when tails is about to be attacked by chaos, and he ducks his head in fear and calls for sonic to help him even though sonic isnt there - i actually enjoyed this small segment bc it does reflect some of what was said about how he reacted to sonics capture (aside from also being across the planet...for seemingly no reason except bc he "lost it" and to get him away from the main group so that classic sonic can appear)
frankly speaking from these two points alone, the games tone just feels kind of confused. its obvious the writers wanted some parts of the darker theme of war...and its also obvious that going all out wasnt gonna be an option bc of the nature of sonic as a character and franchise being about more lighthearted, easier to relate to stories about sonics heroism. which im fine with that being the case; sonic is a hero and more importantly a mascot that profits off of kids being able to relate and look up to. my issue is simply that the premise of this game makes consistent writing kind of doomed from the start if the writers are trying to appeal to both the kids AND older fans. they cant go to the lengths necessary to adequately build the narrative. cant go too dark, cant go too lighthearted, and not finding a balance between to two gives you a confused and bland story
on that note, i personally find the theme of war to be...uncomfortably glorified and unchecked (adding to the tone confusion and blandness). sonic forces is named so because...yknow. armed forces. armies. the whole point of the game is that theres a war going on and youre on the good guy side. i mean its not as if youre fighting against other living creatures, just infinite and eggmans robots, but still. i think what put me off the most is the first comic with the soldier cat. after they save the day, the last lines are "I'll do better. I'll be better. I'll become a real soldier and a real hero." now slap that as the tagline to a united states army corps commercial and suddenly its really...sour tasting
war is just one of those subjects that i think needs to be handled with a bit more care. i mean think about it: the primary gimmick of forces is that you get to make your own character, to be the sonic version of yourself in this world. the plot of the game is that theres a war, and your character joins the resistance to defeat eggman. this game is pretty blatantly glorifying the idea that joining in on a war can make you a REAL soldier, a REAL hero. to some kids, that might sound pretty cool. but theres no nuance to it whatsoever, nothing thought provoking on the subject. no one steps back to be like ‘its good to do good things but wars are tough and not fun, and being a hero isnt everything’. none-a that
now do i think a sonic game could get it into a childs head that they should join the army for real? no, not necessarily. i think its possible, but i think that would also be due to a larger issue of military glorification present in modern culture in general (especially in america). mostly i just find the implications at play with glorifying the theme of war in conjunction to the avatar gimmick to be in poor taste and also entirely avoidable because...
i dont think the war and army framing even had to be a thing. not only is it just so sloppily done in general, with that fact that the supposed soldier forces on the Resistance side are literally never seen on screen except for some dialogue boxes in one episode and the rest of the time only being mentioned through other characters, but i seriously think never saying the words “war” or “army” and not including literal soldiers would have worked just as well and even been the better route. they could have just been like yeah heres eggman taking over the world, heres the resistance fighters that have come together to stop him, they are opposing forces and you play as your avatar to stop eggman - and just leave it at that. it wouldve made the glorification of war less obvious and the handling of the topics at hand appear less confused, appealing to a more lighthearted tone rather than weighing it down with frankly out of place hints to a darker subject of war
finally i wanna talk about the story as it relates to how its told through the game. the plot itself is fairly standard - eggman starts war, captures sonic, takes over planet. you rescue sonic, and together you fight eggman and infinite and ultimately defeat them. thats all good and well even if its cheesy sometimes. the REAL problem is how its executed. a lot of the exposition is given not through cutscenes, but through spoken dialogue with text box subtitles over the episode select screen. and it just feels so...stiff. it doesnt feel like world building, it just feels like being forcefed information with no substance behind it
i get that fully rendered cutscenes throughout can be expensive and time consuming, but shoot id take in-game rendered cut scenes at least. (like in sa, sa2, shadow 2005...) anything that could have provided the world building with a bit more ground to stand on would have been great. sure, there are levels to traverse which look cool...but they dont provide any sense of scale, they dont tell us what the area is like, and more importantly, you never see the other characters who are supposedly on the battlefield "alongside" you in a couple episodes. the storyline from the exposition along sounds like it could be an epic journey - but the way its told with the given game mechanics (i.e.: stage-based gameplay with no open worlds to explore) leaves a lot to be desired
i feel like the stuff explained in the comics should have just been cutscenes or exposition or something to pad out the game a bit. the comics are so short anyways so why just put it in the game? maybe not the first comic about the rando soldier saving the day or w/e...but the comic with silver and knuckles fighting chaos? the comic about infinites origins? all of that could have easily been included. at LEAST the comic with shadow was part of the DLC...but even thats just so gimmicky. they provide important background to the main plot of this game so i really dont understand why it was sidelined to comics and not just included from the beginning
the tension that the exposition already fails to build up is brought down even worse when coupled with the confusing timing of the stage complete screens, where you get your completion rank and see what new character creation items you unlocked. listen, i know immediate gratification for completing the level is important and all...but i swear, having these screens between the end of a boss fight and the cutscene showing what happens to them after being defeated seriously impairs the flow of the game. maybe having it there allows for the cutscene to load up in the background to improve efficiency, but personally id prefer seeing a loading screen as the break between a boss fight and the following cutscene after it and THEN the stage complete screen to finish the sequence off. the boss fight end cutscenes arent that long anyways for the most part, so its just nonsensical to have the stage complete screen interrupt the action when theres only a two minute scene left to it
i cant stand how streamlined forces is to the point of the main plot. what happened to games that actually take the time to explain stuff, show us extra bits to the story and how they connect? and even when forces' does explain SOME stuff, its through audio/text only dialogue. nothing visually interesting, just...dialogue. and then its off to the next level. forces' feels very bare bones honestly. the story is supposed to feel big and epic but it just wasnt given enough to bring that feeling into fruition. this is probably the only thing that saves forces’ from the war glorification issue because the game simply fails so miserably at telling a compelling story due to poor writing and poor formatting that the war stuff gets lost in the mix - and thats just sad
all of this brings me to my conclusion. fuck i wish sonic forces was a better written and executed game, because i do think it could have been so cool. i really like infinite as a villain, in both his design and personality. yeah hes kind of a whiny, edgy bitch - but he had potential. and its really gonna suck if this game killed off all that potential in one fell swoop
(then again, thats why we have fan content and aus :3)

Hi! Mh, I know you are busy and such, and probably people asked u this questions so many times! But I admire u, and I wish to be able to ask you advices! Actually, I always draw for fun, very ugly drawing with no knowledge, it was fun at first but now I want to learn to draw for real, nothing that needs to become professional but yknow, I would like to start from basic and proceed furthering so one day I will be able to draw my favorite characters aswell! Do u have any advice for a beginner? :c
Ahhh thank you so much! And sorry for the late reply, I forget to do that somethings ;;-;; The only advice I would have is to focus on trying new things and experiment along side with your anatomy studies. It helps you improve faster when you’re always trying out new things till you figure out a rendering style you like and end up making your own unique style. Also celshade is a good start for rendering practice in my opinion since it haves core principles of shading, and once you can nail that you can paint a lot more efficiently.

so i stayed up monday night then when I got home tuesday i passed the fuck out and woke up at 5:30a. nice. when i got home today i cleaned up and then finally!! wrote up a workout routine and, yknow, worked out! in conclusion, i fucking love moving and i fucking love being sore right now and feeling my muscles and the adrenaline and endorphins and feeling like a fucking person who is actually capable of doing shit!! physically! and i love the idea of getting stronger and thinner and bein a hot muscle boy, please and thank you. god this is nice. also I should really stop stressin about homework so much and being an artist is no longer part of my identity, and never really has been. that was actually kinda hard to accept and let go but man I just practiced anatomy a lot to do what my datemate was doin, then kept doing it to vent and keep my hands busy. i don’t really draw shit else but doodles and i have zero interest in painting or pencilling or putting anything down on a canvas so people can look at it. I think one part of why it was confusing is that i appreciate art a lot! I really learned to love it and it’s important to me. but god I just have no desire to create images. none. which was nice to let go, i can put that in the past and focus on things i like more. but also ap studio is even more of a bitch. i guess eventually it’ll be less distressing since I don’t want to be any good anyways? but it is admitting that i don’t want to do this or care about it in any capacity. which i was hoping i would when i came up with my concentration, so lmao this sucks. i wish i’d done fuckin, negative feelings or focused on anatomic abnormalities cause I’ve got experience in that but instead I’m doin blocked-out figures floating in a hacky, poorly rendered metaphorscape.
