Basic Guide to Clone Trooper Armour

I don’t know about you guys, but I have a hard time keeping the terms for various parts of clone armour straight in my mind. So, I decided to make this Guide To Armour, to make my life easier for those times I’m drawing or writing stuff and need to reference what this, that or the other piece is called, how it’s put on or taken off. (I’ve also tried to include/come up with some casual or slang terms for some parts because you cannot seriously expect these guys to use the Right Proper Terminology for everything all of the time.)

This is based on the Clone Wars cartoons, because that’s what I know best. Also, this is just the standard armour of regular troopers; if y’all want something about the possible additions/variations that you could have then lmk and I’ll see what I can put together I guess?

Note: a lot of this terminology is taken from medieval knights’ armour. Many terms are originally French; alternative names provided where possible. I did do a bit of research on medieval plate armour, which is the closest thing I can think of to clone armour, but I am by no means an expert so if you have any input or corrections feel free to @ me. Likewise, if you’ve cosplayed as a clone trooper or stormtrooper, I’d very much like to hear about your experience wearing this stuff, how it moves and how it might be similar or different to the “real thing” so to speak.

According to Wookieepedia: The armour is produced on Kamino and has UV spectrum markings visible to Kaminoans. It is made of plastoid-alloy composite, and the plates are attached to the bodysuit via magnatomic gription panels. In general, Phase II armour is lighter, stronger and more ergonomic than Phase I, which has been described as heavy and uncomfortable (Wookieepedia also says that it weighs ‘just under forty kilograms’ which sounds like way too much but eh, I’ll roll with it.)

Body glove/bodysuit – the stuff worn under the armour. Provides thermoregulation, some level of protection from things like blasterfire, vacuum, etc. AKA: blacks.

Helmet – The Bucket. Stuffed full of various tech: tracking device, display screen, comlink… Phase I helmets also have life support capabilities, while Phase II helmets do not, requiring an external oxygen supply*. Helmet crest contains comlink antenna. AKA: bucket, I think Rex once called them sun-bonnets, etc… this is the piece likely to have the most slang terms associated with it. Go wild.

* this is according to Wookieepedia; I’m a bit sceptical but I haven’t yet seen the episode it refers to. I headcanon that Phase II is capable of limited life support for emergency situations, but extended missions require external respirators.

Cuirass – there is some conflicting information on whether this refers to just the front chest armour or both front and back. If both, it consists of breastplate and backplate, joined at the sides and shoulders. Shoulder connections appear to be different for Phase I and Phase II: Phase I has a separate piece covering the shoulder seam, implying that it can be opened, whereas Phase II looks like it has an integrated flexible band; it may or may not be possible to disconnect. Either way, the front and back pieces must be able to separate in order to get the whole thing on.

Plackart – belly piece, wraps around the back to protect kidneys as well. Probably flexible to some extent, has been seen to slide down under belt, as demonstrated by Jesse in Figure 3. Might also have to have at least one open-able seam in it in order for troopers to get into it efficiently.

Spaulder/shoulder bell – also known as pauldrons irl, but that term refers to a different item this context (the pauldrons that commanders, captains and ARC troopers wear), so I feel like it might be better to differentiate between them with different terms to avoid confusion. That’s just my opinion though, you feel free to do as you wish.

Rerebrace – bicep plate. Phase I has cutouts in the back to fit pointy elbows (see below); Phase II does not.

Couter – elbow plate. Pointy elbows in Phase I, unpointy elbows in Phase II, as shown on Figure 4. In Phase I appear to be attached to vambraces in the animated version, Phase II is more mobile. I admit, I’m not a huge fan of this word, I kinda prefer elbow plates.

Vambrace – forearm armour. Has wrist-mounted comlink (see below).

Gauntlet plate – covers back of hand. The 212th absolutely calls these “droid-punchers”, no you cannot convince me otherwise. I think I’ve seen fanon that some troopers sharpen the front edge of this plate to do more damage when punching. Decide for yourself if plastoid alloy would do more damage to the metal of a droid’s chassis if sharpened or unsharpened (and therefore sturdier).

Codpiece/crotch plate – covers the front hip and crotch area. Possible slang term, courtesy of @mockingjay34​: cockblock

Skidplate – covers butt and back hip. A lot of troopers probably just call this piece their shebs, and once again you cannot convince me otherwise. Note that in the clone wars cartoon, Phase I armour is triangular in the back and has a sort of erm… diaper shape, in that the codpiece and skidplate are connected in the crotch (I cannot imagine that being comfortable in any situation, but then again, I have Thicc™ Thighs. Do clones have thigh gaps? Also, I would not want to get pinched by the armour joint between crotch and thigh plates).

In Phase II the crotch and butt pieces are separated, which sounds a lot more sensible, as well as having better butt coverage – think cheeky panties vs full briefs.

I’d imagine that, given the amount of time these guys spend fully armoured, there should be some way of conveniently opening some of this up or removing individual plates for practical reasons (and if any particular trooper wanted to use this feature for… other things, well, that’s their own business).

Cuisse/Thigh plate – covers thighs. Phase I and II have different shapes in the back to account for skidplate shape, with Phase II having significantly less coverage in the upper thigh/butt area, but I guess better range of motion.

Poleyn/knee plate/knee pad – important for maintaining kneecap integrity. Like elbow plates, appears to be integrated into greaves in Phase I, but moving freely in Phase II.

Greaves – cover shins, nothing fancy.

Boots – boots. Do not appear to be armoured, are soft enough to bend your toes for walking/kneeling/whatever you need bendy toes for.

Belt pouches/boxes/compartments – A place to keep your stuff when out & about. I’m assuming this is a Pocket Substitute. Clones deserve pockets too!

Comlink – Generally four large square buttons and one smaller one (live action has more buttons). They also have comlinks in their helmets. Wookieepedia mentioned that they used wrist comms in the show so that the audience could clearly see when characters were talking to each other. Possibly used for long-range communication, whereas the ones in the buckets could be for shorter range?

Life support/those box things on their back – I have no idea what they’re actually called but these also have different designs for Phase I and II. On stormtroopers they contain a power pack and a small oxygen supply, and I guess it’s reasonable to assume that they have the same life support function for clone troopers. Also read somewhere that they have comlink scanner for long-range communication?

Thermal detonator – why would they all have bombs on their back? Seems unsafe. Also I don’t think I’ve ever seen one used? Idk. These things confuse me.

some movie reviews cuz i’ve been binging and wanna share my thoughts. SPOILERS and uncensored movie names cuz i’m throwing it all under a read more anyway

Chip n Dale: Rescue Rangers

Went into it mostly blind, watched bc I wanted to see the references and animation. Honestly the most exciting part was just seeing characters I recognized, like the mlp crew.

Other than that… it was okay. It was cheesy, the animation was alright, they tried to make a 2D look out of 3D, but it really just looked like CGI in the end. (i’m sure disney treated them like shit so no hate to the animators. merging all the styles at once was probably tricky too). The pacing wasn’t bad, and the plot was typical surface level kids movie stuff. Idk, it was cute I guess but eh, not amazing.

The Bad Guys

Plot was cute, a sweet take on villain redemption archs. Pacing was good, and yes it was very silly BUT it owned it in a way that made it not… uncomfortable (looking at u chip n dale) Idk how to put it.. the movie was really self aware, I guess. The writing was good, if not a little corny sometimes.

But my favorite part of this movie was the stunning animation and visuals. Definitely the best blend of 2D and 3D i’ve seen since spiderverse. This is where 3D animation needs to head, not in a realistic uncanny valley way. The character designs were also great they knew exactly what they were doing with the wolf I really enjoyed it and highly recommend, especially if you’re an animation junkie like me

Everything Everywhere All at Once

Hoo boy. I went into this one totally blind, I had only heard that it was good and very thought provoking. After seeing just the beginning, I’d assumed it’d be a heartfelt and serious movie about a mom learning empathy with a little sci fi on the side. However, it ended up being the most absurd, crude, fast paced and reality bending journey that didn’t resolve in a heartfelt and grounded way until the end. And I loved it.

The visual effects were stunning (lots of flashing tho, be warned), and the fight scenes were well done for even the wackier throw downs (one but was brutally beaten with enormous d*ldos !!!!) The acting was awesome too, and it seems like they used a lot of practical effects along with the CG sets which is cool.

I think the portrayal of relatable family struggles (especially as a daughter of an asian parent myself) was well done and woven into the crazy sci fi aspect nicely. It gets very real, showing aspects of asian american families and generational trauma that i’m happy we get to see more representation for. I was definitely tearing up by the end. I guess my only criticism was that some of the fights felt a little bit long (I might just be impatient lol). I liked it a lot, and I felt satisfied by the end.

A Day at the Fair

My submission for the ironstrange fanfic challenge!

Prompt: 

Tony drags Stephen out on a date to the fair, despite Stephen insisting he doesn’t want to go. Tony spends the whole day trying to show Stephen how much fun it is until finally, Stephen breaks down and confesses the real reason he didn’t want to come today.

Tony grinned, practically vibrating with excitement as he rolled out of bed. Every year he and Stephen went to the fair, the closest thing their tiny town had to offer for fun. He grabbed his phone from his nightstand.

T: Heeeeeey Steph~

S: Tony? What is it?

T: Well I was wondering if you would like to accompany me to the fair this fine day, as per our usual tradition

Stephen took a few minutes to reply. Tony set down his phone, brushed his teeth, dressed, and sat down for breakfast. Stephen still hadn’t replied. Then, as he was pouring cereal, his phone dinged.

S: Idk. I’m not feeling up to it rn

T: Okay… do you wanna come over and hang out then? My parents are out of town… I could even sneak a bottle of wine for us

S: Eh… let’s just go to the fair.

Tony smiled.

T: Great! I’ll pick you up in an hour?

S: Sure

The fair was loud and hot and crowded. It reminded Tony of every fantastic summer with Stephen he could think of. Tony squeezed Stephen’s hand, but Stephen didn’t squeeze back.

“Hey, Steph, are you okay? You seem a little off-color.”

Stephen bit his lip.

“Just tired I guess. I have a bit of a headache.”

“Oh, I’m sorry.” Tony leaned up and kissed Stephen’s cheek, then down to his unmarked scent gland. “Maybe we can sit down near the back? Have some lunch? I have Asperin too if you need it. We can even go back home if you’d like. Anything for you,” Tony said.

Stephen smiled softly.

“Lunch sounds good.”

He finally squeezed Tony’s hand back.

“Ugh, don’t they have anything remotely healthy?” Stephen bitched, scrunching up his face at the third deep-fried Oreo stand they passed.

“Oh? Are you doing another vegan kick or something?”

Stephen shook his head, cheeks pink.

“Uh- no. No, just trying to eat a little healthier, that’s all.”

“Can you take a break for today?” Tony asked. God knew he wasn’t planning on eating well today.

“Well… I mean…” Stephen worried his lip between his teeth. “I’d just feel better if I ate healthily, that’s it.” He didn’t meet Tony’s eyes.

They finally found something reasonably healthy- chicken tenders and lemonade- and sat down at a table under a large tree. Somewhere in the background, a band was playing. Stephen picked at his food while Tony happily munched away.

“After this do you want to go on a ride?” tony asked.

Stephen shook his head.

“No rides.”

“Why? Are you still not feeling well?”

Stephen didn’t meet Tony’s eyes, electing instead to look off into the never-ending distance, hazy with the feeling of the fair, a haziness that stayed in Stephen’s mind and mulled like a roiling, humid cloud of every problem that had ever graced him. The heat clung to his skin. His stomach turned and he looked down, his arms folded over his abdomen. Tony could smell the scent of unhappy omega from across the table.

“Yeah. Not feeling great,” he lied.

Tony’s eyes were so warm and comforting that Stephen’s stomach couldn’t help but crawling higher into his throat and nestling there like some sort of weak and defenseless baby bird. Stephen’s cheeks were hot with shame.

“Are you sure that’s everything? Please tell me if something’s bothering you, Stephen. I love you. I want to help.”

Stephen’s stomach churned and he ran to the nearest trashcan and threw up. Tony leaped to his feet and rushed over but Stephen waved him away.

“Oh God- oh God Stephen!” Tony cried.

“I’m- I’m fine,” Stephen coughed. He wiped his mouth and downed his lemonade, popping a few breath mints into his mouth. He let out a low groan and took a deep breath.

“Jesus Stephen, let’s go home. You’re sick. You need to rest.” “No. You brought me here on a date. We’re staying.” The resolution in Stephen’s voice felt strong and clear and hard and unwavering, the same way a freshly poured asphalt highway stretches on and on and on until it dissolves into a dazzling mirage. Endless and resolute in a way that made Tony feel tiny in comparison.

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

Stephen ate his last chicken tender and tossed the tray.

“Maybe we can try at one of those fair games,” Stephen offered.

“Aren’t they all rigged?”

“Well that makes winning more impressive,” Stephen said with a grin.

Stephen took Tony’s hand and they walked through the fair before stopping at a booth: balloons and darts. Stephen bent over, looking at the booth. Then there was a loud whistle and a squeak from Stephen that had Tony’s alpha growling in his chest. Tony turned and snapped at the fuck boy alpha that currently had his hand on his omega’s ass. Stephen turned and slapped the guy’s hand away, face red and furious. His blue-green eyes burned like two twin stars hovering above the ocean horizon.

“Hey sweet-cheeks, what’s a pretty little omega like you doing with a boring alpha like him?” the guy said with a thousand-watt smile.

“Not interested.”

“Aw, come on baby, don’t be like that.”

“He said he’s not interested,” Tony growled.

The guy rolled his eyes.

“Fine, tightass.”

He stalked away and Stephen’s resolve broke. His entire body drooped and he sank into his seat, the smell of pure displeasure and unhappiness radiating from him like a morning fog over a valley. Tony sighed and pulled Stephen to his chest, holding him tight.

“Fuck Stephen- I’m so sorry.”

“Not your fault,” Stephen mumbled.

But there was a flat sort of grey hanging in his eyes and Tony knew it wasn’t okay, but he also knew there was nothing he could ever do. Tony held him close, whispering gentle things into Stephen’s ears.

“Hey, I saw what happened.” Tony looked up to see the carnival stand girl looking apologetic at the two of them. “I don’t know if this would make you feel better, but would you like to play a few rounds for free? It’s on the house.”

Tony smiled and looked to Stephen.

“Does that sound fun?”

Stephen shrugged, laying his chin on the counter.

“You play. I’ll watch.”

Tony nodded, a plan in mind. He missed the first shot but nailed the next four. Then he aimed for the bright yellow balloon titled ‘10,000 points.’ It was tiny, underinflated, and unlikely to pop from elasticity tension. Tony ran a few trajectory equations through his head, nibbling at his lip. He had two darts left. Gravity was his best bet, if he could arc the dart so it landed into the balloon, he might stand a chance. All the other balloons were one point, and by now, he could maybe get Stephen one of those cute little teddy bears, but he wanted to get Stephen something bigger. Like that giant fluffy round hamster plushy the size of Tony’s body.

The first dart missed, bouncing off the board and falling to the ground. Tony took a deep breath and tossed the last dart in a high arc, watching as it fell and fell and fell and gained velocity until it popped the yellow balloon with a loud snap.

Stephen grinned and clapped and Tony did a little dance. The girl grinned.

“Congratulations! What prize would you like?”

Tony grinned and pointed up at the massive hamster. The girl pulled down the hamster and passed it to Tony who promptly passed it to Stephen.

“Hey, I know today hasn’t been great, but I’m really glad I got to spend time with you today. You never fail to make me happy, even when the whole world feels bad, and I want you to know I want to be there for you, on all the good days and bad.”

Stephen looked at the hamster, then back at Tony. He sniffled and broke down in tears.

“Oh God- Stephen? Was it something I said? Are you okay? Oh God, I’m so sorry!” Tony stammered.

Stephen whimpered, tears pouring down his face. Then he turned and ran, the hamster in his arms as he wove through the crowd and through carnival stands. Tony stared after him, heart sinking. He stood there for a second before taking off after Stephen.

It took him twenty minutes to find Stephen in one of the animal shows, surrounded by cages of fluffy baby bunnies. He was crying silently into the hamster, squeezed tight in his arms. Tony knelt beside him.

“Stephen?” His voice was soft. Something was very wrong. “Please… please just tell me what’s wrong. I want to help you.”

Stephen looked away. His chest was so full of lead he couldn’t bring himself to speak. He felt heavy and dense, like an ancient tree rooted to the ground, bark worn by the elements but still there. Unmoving. Unable to move.

“Please.”

Stephen let out a choked whimper.

“I don’t know if I’m ready to tell you.” His voice was cracking and frail. So weak. But it was the truth.

“That’s okay. I just want to make sure you’re safe… are you safe?” Tony asked, taking Stephen’s hands in his.

Stephen nodded.

“It’s just… I don’t know.” Stephen hung his head.

“It’s okay not to know,” Tony whispered. “Do you want to go home now?”

Stephen shook his head.

“I want to ride the Ferris Wheel. Like we do every year.”

Tony smiled softly and hugged Stephen, staying there for a second, the way a curling vine of ivy finds comfort in cracked bark, grey with exhaustion. They stayed there for a bit, nestled amongst the animal cages and beneath the flair of the crowded festival like the world was fog and they were the grass, rooted in place.

Stephen moved first, reaching up and pulling himself to his feet and then reaching for Tony to help him up.

“You know, you’re the best alpha I could have ever wished for,” Stephen said with a small, bittersweet smile.

“Well… I couldn’t have asked for anyone better to fall in love with,” Tony responded.

“Do you promise you’ll always be with me? Through everything?” Stephen asked, squeezing Tony’s hand.

“Of course. I love you, Stephen. And nothing can ever make me stop.”

Tony leaned up and kissed Stephen softly, sweetly. Stephen let his eyes drift closed and he savored every single saccharine second.

They found the Ferris Wheel easily. It was the center of the fair, after all. And one long line later they were sitting in a car going up and up and up. Stephen fidgeted quietly. It was funny how the second all you needed was time it seemed to twist and turn and go faster and faster so blindingly fast you can barely even remembered what you prepared to say. When the carriage got halfway up its arc Stephen bit his lip, letting out a little, tightly-wound sigh.

“Tony… I need to tell you what’s wrong. I’ve been avoiding it all day, but… I just wanted one last good day with you before it all changed.” Stephen looked over the edge of the carriage and let out a dry chuckle. “Although I suppose I ruined my chance at that, too.”

“What- what are you talking about?” Tony’s voice was on edge.

“I-I’m pregnant.”

Stephen stared at Tony full-on. He kept searching for something other than shock but it was like combing a beach for something that just wasn’t there. Stephen’s hands started to shake.

“T-Tony? Please say something.”

Stephen’s voice sounded so small. He felt so small.

“Am I- Am I the dad?” Tony finally asked.

Anger flared deep in Stephen’s gut and for a moment he wanted to slap Tony off of the stupid Ferris Wheel.

“Of course you’re the father!” Stephen snapped. “You fucking idiot- you really think I’m screwing a dozen alphas behind your back?”

His scent soured and he turned away, glaring. Tony stayed quiet.

“Whatever. You probably want to break up with me now anyways. Just do it. I don’t want to have you pretend to care about this. I’ll just… forget about my full-ride to Columbia. I doubt my parents will even let me go. They want me to stay on the farm and become a good obedient little housespouse omega.” Stephen let out an involuntary whimper. Tears were pouring down his cheeks and he hugged himself. “I thought I was going to be happy… I thought I was going to have a future, but I- I don’t know anymore!”

The whole world felt like it was collapsing, folding in an compressing into one invincible singularity stuck in Stephen’s windpipe. Everything was spinning and hot and his head hurt so so much… Stephen closed his eyes and buried his face in his hands, sobbing.

Then, Tony gently wrapped his arms around Stephen, pulling the crying omega to his chest.

“Shh… it’s okay. I’m sorry, I just… I’m a father…” A small smile appeared on Tony’s face. “I couldn’t believe it. But Stephen, whatever you choose to do, this is your choice, and I will back you up 1,000%. I love you, and I meant it when I said I would stay with you no matter what. I know how much medical school means to you, and I swear that I can help you take care of our child so you can study if you choose to keep it. You don’t need to give up your dream, your dream can always stay. If you choose not to keep it, then I’ll be there for you too. No matter what you choose, we’re in this together.”

Stephen let his hands fall away from his face and his head plop on Tony’s shoulder. He was still crying and shaking, but this time from happiness. Tony wasn’t leaving him. He wasn’t going to be stuck alone on a farm his whole life. He would be okay. They would be okay.

He turned and tackled Tony in a hug, enough to rattle their cart. Tony laughed and held them as they reached the top of the Ferris Wheel, watching as the sun set over the fair and the town and everything surrounding it and turned it all to gold.

What if you became a dog? (Ft. Grim, Ace, Deuce, Leona, Vil, Malleus and Lilia)

It has been a few weeks since your ‘neko’ accident and Grim is still off of his supply of tuna. But due to this accident, you and Grim were faced with extreme supervision whenever you attended Professor Crewel’s class. All your potions were tested before Professor Crewel gave you the permission to use the potions. There was absolutely no space for any errors.

So... With that being said, how did you, ended up as a dog?

Well, it’s pretty simple. You went for a bathroom break during one of Professor Crewel’s classes, so you left Grim in charge of your potion for awhile. The creature read the instructions carefully, trying to not mess up the potion as it would extend his punishment of no tuna even longer. However, he messed up the ingredient amount. Once the creature realized his mistake, he tried to get rid of it before anyone found out. So, he did the one logical thing to do. He threw the entire potion out the window.

You were on your way back from the bathroom, hoping to yourself that Grim was able to handle the potion perfectly, then all of a sudden, you felt something on your head.

Rain? No, the sky was pretty clear.

Water? No, this doesn’t feel like water.

You then used your hand to touch the liquid on your head, bringing the liquid to your eyes to get a good look at what it was. As soon as you did, the cloud appeared again.

“Not agai-” You couldn’t even finish your sentence and you were completely covered by the cloud once again.

“Now, Grim! Yours and (Y/N)’s potion please.” Professor Crewel beckoned Grim to show his potion to him.

“Fgnaaa! Um, well, you see I-”

“Woof!” A (H/C) colored pup appeared at the doorway, chewing onto a stick.

“Woof! Woof!” The pup barked cheerfully.

“What is that? No, who is that?!” Ace exclaimed. Grim looked at the pup with widen eyes.

“Oh no....” The creature said as he rushed to the window where he threw out the potion to see the potion along with your clothes on the floor. Deuce and Ace followed to see the same scene and they looked at Grim and they immediately knew who the (H/C) colored puppy is.

“Grim... What did you do?” Deuce asked while Ace slowly approached you, trying to not scare you for they remembered the ‘neko’ incident all too well. If you were already a runner when you were a cat, they could only imagine your speed if you were a dog.

“I...Uh... Might have miscalculated some ingredients.” Grim said. Deuce could only shake his head at Grim.

“My, what a lovely young little pup this is... “ Professor Crewel appeared beside Ace, peering down at you. Ace could practically feel the menacing aura bouncing off from the professor as he stood beside him.

“Ahh, your fur is so soft.. And what marvelous color coats your body..” The professor had reached out to pet you. You slowly backed away from the professor's touch.

Now, I would be lying if I told you that you were okay with this. You were very uncomfortable. You felt as if you were a prey and the professor was the predator. Ace realized this and quickly scooped you up.

"There there, (Y/N), calm down..." Ace cooed to you and you just snuggled into his arms more, trying to get away from the professor's looks on you.

"Ano, professor, can you make another antidote for (Y/N) again?" Deuce asked the teacher, snapping him out of his thoughts.

"Yes, of course I will, in the meantime, please don't lose sight of (Y/N) again." The professor looked at the three first-years.

"Yes, Professor Crewel." They replied in sync.

"Good boys, now I shall get to work on the antidote." The professor said and he mumbled a sentence after. "Even though I don't want to."

"Okay! So what do we do with you?" Ace asked looking at you, and you just barked a response to him.

"I say we don't do anything with her, we just close her in a room and stare at her." Grim suggested. Ace and Deuce looked at him in confusion.

"Looks like you don't have any experience with dogs at all." Deuce said shaking his head.

"I know, we'll just take her back to Ramshackle Dorm and let her run around the yard of the dorm." Ace suggested and Deuce nodded.

"Yeah, she'll get her run and we get to keep an eye on her."

"Sounds like a plan." Grim added.

"Usually it's (Y/N) who makes these plans, looks like she's rubbing off on us." Ace said as they leave the laboratory to get you back to Ramshackle Dorm.

However, on the way back to the dorm, a certain something had caught your eye. It was a tail. Not just any tail though, you had noticed the tail of a certain dorm leader.

So, you jumped out of Ace's arms to go inspect the tail.

"Huh? (Y/N)!! Wait!!" Screams for you to wait were heard, but you didn't care. You were focused on the task you gave yourself, 'to inspect the mysterious tail'.

So there you were, navigating along the hallway with your vision focused on the elusive tail, there was no way you were going to let it out of your sight. Then, the tail took a sharp left turn, and you followed it so. You were immediately met with blazing sunshine for you were in the field of Night Raven College.

"Ah, Leona-san, glad to see you actually arrived for the class today." Vil commented to the lion.

"Ugh... Let's just get over with this so I can go back to sleep." Leona replied with a yawn.

"Alright!! Let's begin today's lesson!!" Vargas (Idk if I should call him a professor or not) said to the third-years. "Let's start with 100 laps around the field!" As soon as this sentence left the teacher's mouth, multiple groans were heard, especially from a certain beauty queen. However this didn't bothered Leona, due to plenty of magical shift practices, he was already used to running long laps around the field and he just wanted his nap so he decided to get it done with as soon as possible.

And there he was, in position, ready to run. His tail was resting on the ground and you took this oppurtunity to inspect said tail. As soon as Vargas had blown his whistle, you pounced on the tail, holding a firm grip to it. So with that, a 'smack' sound was heard and Leona had fallen face first onto the ground. Some laughter was heard from the other third-years.

"Oh.. My? What's this?" Vil said as he saw you playing with Leona's tail.

"What do we have here?" Malleus appeared beside Vil with Lilia not far behind.

"Why... It's a cute little puppy.." Lilia said with a slight smirk on his face. "How adorable."

"Oww..." Leona groaned.

"But, there aren't any dogs on campus, at least, there aren't any dogs who aren't half-human." Vil said.

"You're right, no student nor staff owns a pet dog." Lilia agreed.

You didn't care though, the only thing on your mind was the tail. But shortly after, you felt as if someone was holding your neck as you're being lifted into the air. You let out a slight whimper as you were faced with a slightly annoyed lion.

"Alright, whose (H/C) colored pup is this? You better come out now before I eat'em up." Leona looked at you with menancing eyes.

You however, were not taking any of this so you glared at Leona and barked furiously, trying to bite the lion, also shocking everyone around you.

"Ah, you've upset it." Lilia said as he tried to take you away from the lion. But you were thrashing around, making it super hard for the third-years to seperate you and Leona.

And thanks to the loud barking, Ace, Deuce and Grim heard you and they immediately ran out to the field to see Lilia getting a hold of you while Vil and Malleus were helping Leona.

"A-Ah! Lilia-senpai! Dorm leaders Vil, Malleus and Leona!" Deuce shouted and Lilia turned to look at them.

"Ace? Deuce? Grim? What's wrong?" Lilia said as you were struggling to get out of his grip but you stopped once you saw Ace, Deuce and Grim.

"Can we have that puppy back?" Ace asked.

"Oh, so this puppy was yours?" Leona glared at them. Vil and Malleus had already helped Leona back onto his feet.

"Now, Leona, let's not jump into fights." Vil said to the lion.

"Um... No... Technically, this is (Y/N)." Deuce said, sweatdropping.

"E-Eh? This is (Y/N)?!?" Lilia asked shocked. Leona, Vil and Malleus were looking at you, trying to confirm what they heard was true. No wonder they thought this pup was so...so....adorable!

"Oh, fufufu, this is the first time I've ever seen her this cute." Lilia said, hugging you tighter.

"Ah, let me guess, a spell went wrong?" Malleus asked.

"Or perhaps a potion?" Vil added.

"It was a potion that went wrong, Grim here, miscalculated the ingredient amount needed for the potion. And to not get caught with it, he threw the entire potion out the window." Ace explained.

"And it landed on (Y/N)." Deuce continued. Malleus and Vil had to restrain themselves from laughing while Lilia was already laughing madly.

"The coincidence is uncanny! Hahahaha! But anyway, here you go, take her to Crewel immediately." Lilia handed you over to Deuce.

"Yes, senpai." The first-years nodded and head back to the lab.

"Well, it was fun while it lasted, never knew she could be so cute." Vil said to himself.

"Let's just hope Crewel doesn't decide to try anything with her." Leona said, for he knew what the professor would do to animals like him, especially if it's a dog.

You arrive safely back in the lab and the professor was already there waiting for you. He reluctantly gave you the antidote and you were turned back to normal. The professor then walked away muttering something about soft fur and nice color.

"What happened?" You asked.

"Well, instead of becoming a cat again, you became a dog." Ace started.

"Ahh, did I now?" You slowly turned your head to look at Grim with a smile on your face.

"F-Fgnnaaa!" Grim exclaimed as he saw your eyes staring into his soul. You then gave him a closed-eye smile.

"Grim."

"Y-Yes?"

"No tuna for another month."

ugh, the hp sorting house system is way too reductive. he has qualities of gryffindor, slytherin, and hufflepuff - brave, astute, loyal to a fault, etc. so it's a hard choice. but if i really have to choose, i'd go for gryffindor. i know that his Bad Boy facade shouts slytherin, but while he has larger goals (killing all the titans, then saving the world etc.), he's got no actual ambition for himself. hufflepuff would also be a good option.

daemon (from the his dark materials series): (because i've just decided that's just way more accurate than the hp method) some kind of big feline. maybe a panther - a black panther would be the ideal - aloof, predatory, dangerous, fiercely independent.

best quality: besides his obvious strenghts as a leader and warrior, the way he cares for his comrades-in-arms. it's very hard to gain his trust and respect, but once you have it, it's forever. he's pragmatic and ruthless, yes, but he also has a huge capacity for compassion and friendship. not that he would be effusive about his affections, of course.

worst quality: none, he's absolutely perfect ❤ jklsdfhjk jokes aside, he really struggles to open up (a serious understatement), idt he ever talked about his traumatic past with anyone. i mean, maybe he mentioned it to hange and erwin (erwin knew him when he was still an undergound thug, so...), but... he's not great with feelings. despite his apathetic, intimidating mask, he feels and cares deeply, but he has a long history with losing the people he loves, so he tries to not personally care about his squadmates, which can be both a strenght and a weakness. of course, he spectacularly fails at this.

ship them with: well, it's not a secret that i'm a huge rivamika fan, this ship is almost literally consuming my waking thoughts lmao. imo they're perfectly compatible: very similar personalities (stoic, the strongest warriors, absolutely terrifying on the battlefield but with a soft underbelly), very similar pasts/experiences, so many parallels that it's actually ridiculous, etc. i love how they're both each other's equals and likeness (yes, i took it from jane eyre. no, i don't regret anything lmao). a lot of tropes i love, too: Terrible First Impression (the Pride and Prejudice vibes are so strong with these two, you have no idea), Kindred Spirits/Mirror Images, Veteran/Young Prodigy, The Last of Their Kind, even Height Difference lmao. i could write a whole rivamika manifesto, but this is already too long. (maybe for some other time 👀) i would've loved for their dynamic to be more explored in canon but alas, isayama clearly didn't give a shit about the ackerman legacy, he just used it as a plot shortcut to give them conveniently unique powers, since they never really talked about it 🙄 (and before some troll comes into my askbox shouting "you iNcEsT fReAk!!!!1!!", they're only very distantly related. we know shit about the ackermans but we know for sure that they've got at least several generations between them. biologically their shared DNA is 0%, obviously they don't see each other as family, all the eldians have a dead ass common ancestor from 2000 years ago so they're all basically ⁓related anyway. if you really wanna scream about i.ncest, go watch got/dark/the borgias and shut the fuck up please. or alternatively go outside and touch some grass) sorry for the rant, uh. anyway, i can also see levi/erwin. idk if i'd ever care enough to read a fic about them (i'm usually a huge multishipper, but for some weird reason not when it comes to rivamika? same with braime and kastle tbh), but still, i can see it.

misc. thoughts: besides the stupid teenage fangirl crush i have on him, i'm genuinely fascinated by the man himself. he's a huge mess of a contradictions, and yet somehow it works: he's violent and brash and kind of an asshole, but also has a strong moral code and integrity; he's obv very skilled at all the killing/torturing stuff and yet he has a huge respect for life; he's got a potty mouth to say the least, and yet some very aristocratic manners/tastes (the way he sits, his preference for tea and usually refined clothes); he comes from what's supposed to be an illustrous bloodline, he's methodical and very precise, and yet he was born and raised in the underground, he's been used to filth and blood and poverty since he was a child, kenny of all people was his father figure, and probably has known no other life than a perennial survival mode existence. he's "humanity's strongest soldier", but while well-built he's also small, the david to the titans' goliah, and probably not what people would assume a born warrior looks like. he's also one of the few characters who stayed true to himself and his original characterization until the end, bless you smol king ❤

this is actually easy: mikasa belongs to hufflepuff and no, i won't take criticism (just joking lol). enough with this "hufflepuffs are fluffy puppies/Cinnamon Rolls <3" thing: mikasa values loyalty and duty more than anything else. she's also hardworking... and fierce, strong, lethal. yes, hufflepuff and lethal are not mutually exclusive concepts.

daemon: (finally the better option) a she-wolf, fiercely protective of her pack.

best quality: loyal, brave, incredibly strong (alongside her more fragile qualities). practical and level-headed on the battlefield, at least when eren is not included in the picture.

worst quality: struggles to let go of the past (understandable, considering her trauma). tunnel-vision when it comes to eren, obv. extreme levels of delusions ("if only i spoke openly about my romantic feelings for him - as if i didn't made them abundantly clear in ⁓6 years - he wouldn't kill 80% of humanity :(((" lmao okay. just. okay), but that's more on the writing. she's sadly more static than any other main character throughtout the whole series.

ship them with: see above :) but recently i've also started to be intrigued by mikasa/annie and mikasa/sasha. also, i'm sympathetic to jeankasa fans, though i don't actually care for the ship.

brotp them with: EMA trio, especially armin+mikasa. their friendship is so beautiful and special. also sasha.

needs to stay away from: ...... eren, at least romantically. again, that's more on the writing than anything else, but e.remika unfortunately encompasses many tropes i loathe with all the strength of my old shriveled heart: childhood friends-to lovers where the (male) childhood friend doesn't acknolewdge/is completely indifferent to the other (female) friend's romantic feelings, she hopelessly pines for him for years without anything more than a cold shoulder... until in the last chapter it's revealed that he loved her all along and doesn't "want other men to have her!!! :((" (then why did you have no reaction whatsoever to jean's years-long crush on her while she was jealous of any vaguely female-shaped human being you were friendly to, including hange? are you that dumb, man?); the female character's development and entire arc 100% revolves around the male protagonist - she has no goals, no dreams of her own except staying with him forever and ever; the romance is based on an idealized childhood dream, therefore reaffirming those childish illusions would make the character regress, not actually grow up (and nope, epilogue!jk doesn’t count; that also lacks build-up - i would’ve said the same about rm as well, so it’s not about shipping, guys, it really isn’t - and mikasa needed an inner change; getting married to another man but still praying to eren’s shrine is not substitute to actual development lol). post-time skip she's never really frustrated/angry with him, they never get a confrontation about him becoming a, y'know, mass-murderer of gigantic (pun intended) proportions; she puts him on a pedestal, and never stops idealizing him/never sees him for what he actually is (the narrative framing him as some kind of tragic martyr/saint eren from paradis with zero agency and basically... no clear motivation for the abovementioned mass murder, and not the actual complex tragic anti-hero/villain motivated by revenge and righteous fury he deserved to be, does not help). it lacks a good or even decent build-up - it's basically all tell and not show. now, if they'd actually been childhood friends to enemies to lovers/mutually co-dependent... it could have been interesting. sadly, it's not my cup of tea. of course this is just my personal preference, no hard feelings to the shippers.

misc. thoughts: enormous potential. she's been my fav female character since s1 - and ah, i miss s1!mikasa, when she had actually other stuff to do besides mothering eren. i love that she's the strongest warrior (second only to levi, obv), that her skills are never called into questions despite her gender, i love how she stands up for herself and the people she loves, that she may seem cold and stoic and yet has a such a huge heart, that she's not perfect but also sometimes awe-inspiring. sadly, she never really gets out of eren's shadow; what she lacks is an arc focused on herself. that's why imo getting deeper into the ackerman lore would've helped (also, you cannot make the main female character and the most popular male character descend from the same Unique Bloodline or whatever, and never really make them acknowledge it out loud; as a writer, you just can't lol). my spite is so strong that i'm currently writing a ridiculously pretentious fic that's 70% development for her character, to give her a voice, and 30% ackerthirsting. (yes, that's the fic i'm always vagueblogging about lmao, rip @ my brain). if any other rivamika fan is interested… mind you, it’s in italian tho, and idt i have the skills to translate into english.

Rating Every Magia Record Design

Yeah it’s this post, the one I promised that anon. Pretty intuitive what this’ll be, just read the title.

Except actually we’re ignoring crossover girls, including the various Tart, Kazumi, Suzune, Oriko girls, and the Holy Quintet and stuff. And variant girls too, that’s your swimsuits, haregis and yukatas, Christmas, rumour Tsuruno and Holy variants, yeah. Basically this’ll just be every girl original to Magia Record as they originally appear in Magia Record. Simple, yeah?

Also the order this’ll be in is just left to right, top to bottom of this list of magical girls + Ashley Taylor at the end, hence why it’ll look fucky. I can’t be bothered doing unreleased girls since it’s like a teensy weensy bit harder to find good photos of them

Obviously this post’ll be long as fuck but I’m not actually super good at talking about character designs so chances are all I’ll really have to say is “I like this one” or “I don’t like this one”. Hope that’s fine. Also I don’t really know anything about the majority of these girls since I’ve not read game stories and the anime doesn’t have anywhere close to this many characters so this really will mostly just be about designs. Also there’s no fucking WAY I’m proofreading this.

Anyway, let’s go.

Hikaru Kirari

Starting off pretty strong, I like this design quite a lot. It looks appropriately magical girl but with a pretty obvious marching band aesthetic, nice colour scheme to boot I’m not huge on how the little fluffy cape thing has sleeves as well since I think it might just look better as a little trimmed robe of its own, moreover she’s got a ponytail I like but that just means she’s got a lot of shit hanging from the back, but eh whatever. Overall solid. I’m not actually scoring these honestly but if I were like, 7/10?

Yukika Nanase

Honestly not huge on this design, it wants to be this sorta sexy playboy casino thing with the diamond garters and tubeskirt and bunny ears, but then the entire upper torso area with the really normal looking shirt and its tit pockets, plus the weird shape the jacket looks, idk I’m not big on it. Also don’t like how her Soul Gem is dangling from a really long chain around the neck, that just seems ridiculously dangerous and inconvenient. So probably like, 3/10 for this design or something.

Sayuki Fumino

EASY 10/10. How do you expect me to give a magical idol girl as top tier adorable as this anything less? It’s great as an idol outfit and it’s great as a magical girl outfit, uses frills minimally but to great effect and instead has diamonds as a sort of key motif for the outfit and I love them, plus outfit aside Sayuki’s just ridiculously cute looking in the first place, so that’s just a win all around.

Rumor of the Ten-Thousand-Year Sakura

I fucking hate to say it but this is like a 9/10 for me. I absolutely adore this entire aesthetic, Sakura’s fucking gorgeous and is my exact aesthetic in a waifu, and I love the sort of cyberpunk-ish aesthetic going on with the bracelet, sock I guess, and what I assume is her Soul Gem on her chest. The only reason it doesn’t get higher is because of the skirt, which if it was just filled in, you could even keep the diamond aesthetic by making it white or that lighter blue she’s got around her waist, would be enough to get a 5 from me. It just looks silly, and obviously it’s a magical girl outfit so it doesn’t need to be ridiculously practical or anything, but there was definitely some practicality being sacrificed for fanservice there and I’m not huge on it. Oh well. Rest of Sakura’s design is more to my taste than Sayuki, mostly because of long white hair, so we’ll still call her design my favourite so far even if it’s not got a perfect score from me.

Riko Chiaki

Yeah okay I really like this one too, because this Riko-chan is just mega fucking absolutely super adorable and I am a big fan. She’s got a sort of, I guess Alice in wonderland look with the frilly apron and whatever that cloth on her head is called, and the bands holding her sleeves rolled up too, I like it. But the big ass white cloak with that nice blue frill trail, they keep it magical girly enough to where you’ll notice that she’s a magical girl way before anything else, and hey that matters to me so. Probably... 8/10.

Kanagi Izumi

Yeah no wow the boss of the east or west I can’t remember is a fucking queen, I love her. Very obvious naval influences in this one and I think it looks sick as hell, don’t know what the fuck that eyeglass is but who even cares. Magical girl emphasis is still retained with the skirt, frills obviously, and whatever the fuck her boots are up to, and I think it looks really nice. Also a very simple and effective colour scheme I like a lot too. Only things I’d really say against it are that the belt’s probably a bit more complex than it needs to be and I don’t think her shirt needed to be sleeveless, but then that works with the garterbelts and the 5 star card art is pretty hot so honestly I’m not gonna complain. 8/10.

Kokoro Awane

I stand with most people on this design in that I’m not a fan. Main reason is that it looks fucking ridiculous, that like skin tight latex behind this weird not-full skirt that’s like 3 skirts at once looks dumb as hell, and yeah the fact that it’s got pantsu at all just, looks weird. I think going by the latex and that upper body jacket thing, they did want her to sort of dress light, but again that doesn’t work with the skirt and the gigantic fucking scarves, also that scarf like goes into a cravat with the usual magical girl collared shirt and it’s super busy in a way that looks ugly and cheap. Also her hair’s fuckin weird, why have the loops on each side but then have a side ponytail on one side as well, looks stupid as hell. Colour scheme is okay and that’s all the praise I can give. 2/10.

Tsukasa Amane

Order of this post means I’ll be talking about Tsukuyo way later than her sister but yeah I hate twin designs in anime and while it’s not like these two don’t look different, there are enough broad similarities versus kinda minor differences for me to call it lazy and complain about twins as always. Anyway yeah otherwise I think her design is neat, it’s got a super sort of, yamato nadeshiko but for combat instead look, I like it.She might actually be better off without the frills honestly, but they’re not really distracting so eh. Like the little blue sash that breaks up the colours around the middle, though with that being there I wonder if the bow really needed to have such lengthy ribbons? Uhhhhhhh 6/10.

Iroha Tamaki

Hey we’re finally at the main character! The ever controversially designed Iroha Tamaki, so controversial because of whatever the fuck semi-transparent cloth she has around pretty much her entire body. And to just get my stance out there immediately, I like it. I think it looks good, the colour goes really well with her and stops any one colour from dominating the design, which is a problem that most redesigns I’ve seen people do of this run into. I don’t think the presence of a midriff that’s obfuscated by fabric anyway is even close to enough of a problem for it to deserve the response it gets, especially since unlike many other instances of fanservice in MagiReco designs this one isn’t even like, dumb looking. They didn’t need to stretch anything to have fanservice, it just looks like that and I’m fine with it. Moving past that fabric, I also just love the hooded cape looks with the colours gives her this real rogue-cross-paladin look that I’m a huge fan of. Also I’m not mentioning Doppels but her cape splitting up gives it this bird-ish look that compliments her Doppel super well. There are a few times we see her without the cape on at all, more specifically mid-transformation in the anime, and I think that sort of black top with the pink cross around in just looks so cool, it’s got a really nimble look to it that befits a crossbow magical girl so well. I just overall really like Iroha’s design. 9/10.

Hazuki Yusa

Feels like I’ve not really disliked one of these in a while. So good thing Hazuki’s here to provide. So I think the artist for the Azalea cards draws some really beautiful art and they all have some damn good colour palettes too. But uh, this design is otherwise not very good to me. I think the skirt, gloves and head are fine, and I don’t mind the dress in general even with the fuckin massive obvious cleavage spot. Bow in the middle is cute as well if unnecessary since whatever the fuck coat thing she’s wearing over it all provides enough black but whatever. The problem is everything else, not the least of which is that fucking, thing she’s wearing over it all. Literally what the fuck is that? It looks ridiculous and has no place staying on her. Also hate the uneven lengths of the socks or whatever but moreover I hate the fucking whatever those are around each leg, they’re fine on the gloves since they’re symmetrical and not stupid big but those leg ones are neither of those and it’s messy as hell. And those white things on her right leg too, I don’t get the point, they just busy the whole thing up. Like 3/10.

Masara Kagami

This design is another one that���s just a little too busy for its own good. I like the use of the transparent fabrics, her colour scheme is really nice actually, which obviously I’d say about a silver haired character but whatever. It’s just the everything else. Those weird tendrils hanging from the back, the frills around the base of the skirt, the star studs all over the transparent things, whatever the fuck the frills are doing around her neck and collarbone, it all just looks close enough to off to bother me. Also while I said I like the use of the transparent fabrics, they’re still used weirdly because like, so much of the upper body is either not transparent or there just aren’t clothes there because we need cleavage, and then the skirt’s short enough while also being over booty shorts to where you wonder what the point of the transparency was since it looks so imbalanced. Don’t really get the leg accessory either. It’s just overall a design with good ideas but the execution kinda hurts all of them. 5/10.

Shizuku Hozumi

Here we have another girl that’s pretty popular with redesigners. I’ll concede that her 4 star card art is probably a bit much, but I think she looks decent enough here. Gives the impression of a girl who fights light though the gauntlets suggest she still packs a punch. Real nice colour scheme as well. The scarf could probably do without the bow though since that looks to add more clutter than anything, and on that note having like two different cloth types hanging around her waist, one of them having its own belt on top of the other belt that’s already there, and her Soul Gem being this weird waist piercing that’s off to the side, that entire area is busy as hell and it’s not great. But a decent design overall I’d say, 6/10.

Sasara Minagi

And finishing us off for light girls we have Asuna Yuuki. Wait fuck sorry, Sasara. But nah I like her design. It’s not super to my taste but it looks knightly enough and red and white is a tried and true colour scheme, the golds giving it an especially regal feel and the leathers keeping it clear that she’s still more a fighter than a noble in spite of that. Probably could’ve went without whatever the thigh highs are doing, also feel like the area around her chest is super boring because they kept it plain as fuck to emphasise her tits and we didn’t really need that. Mostly solid though, 6/10.

Mikura Komachi

Starting off dark girls is this, which obviously has a sort of graduate/teacher aesthetic to it that uh, I don’t like here. And that’s mostly because I cannot work out what shape is actually going on for the entire lower half, cause we’ve got way too many frills going absolutely fucking wild on top of I guess a dress skirt she’s got on? And then that has a black pattern across it but also is being cut into to see more leg and, are those pockets or straps of some kind at the side? I don’t know what this design is. Actual girl’s pretty though so, 4/10. 

Hanna Sarasa

Actually thought this was an Oriko girl because of the art style but while it’s the same character designer and artist, she’s still MagiReco original so. Yeah. Anyway this is another design that, it looks deceptively simple, but there’s still kinda too much going on for me to be into it. Her hair’s too big, I’m weirded out by the open shoulders since they definitely don’t seem like they should be open, those fat bastard arm frills look weird and don’t work with the cape, which doesn’t work with that semi-skirt that’s there too, we didn’t need the frilly skirt and the suspenders, she just kinda looks awkward all around. 3/10, not really a fan.

Ui Tamaki

Ui is very, very, very adorable. And her design is also on the simpler side too, whic I can appreciate. I love that her sort of outer cape ends up matching the colours of the top and skirt so when she just stands neutrally like that she’s got a mega nice look to her. Really nice colour scheme too. I think her top probably didn’t need to bare her midriff, and I’d probably personally prefer that her cape thing dangled from the shoulders rather than around the sleeves, but then it’d be harder to see her adorable collar so I don’t mind the compromise. Very cute as well that tops off the design nicely. 7/10.

Ikumo Makino

This is actually another one I like for the simple reason that it’s a really good conversion of a maid outfit into a magical girl outfit, the vibrant pinks specifically giving it a lot of life. It’s also one where the problems are really easily identified in that, if we’ve got that giant bow on the back, do we really need to have those sort of winged frills coming from the shoulders and sleeves? Makes me think the design would look way too wite from behind and it doesn’t look that good. Might’ve been better doing away with the frills coming from the sleeves and the ones on the shoulders being shrunk. 7/10.

Mifuyu Azusa

To get the main source of good out of the way, I love the colour palette, gives Mifuyu this very literal morally gray look that befits what I know of her character. And then outside of that there’s nothing I’m all that big on. Design just seems a little too, I guess fluffy? It’s more pyjama like than magical girl, just connect the sleeves to the rest of it and you’ve got a nice comfy robe. Like it’s not bad per se but I think it looks a little too goofy to take seriously. Also the skirt does that one thing a lot of MagiReco skirts seem to do where it’s fucking convex for some reason and it looks weird and I don’t like it. Plus while I appreciate them wanting to give her hair some love when she’s transformed, those fluffy whatever the fucks also just look silly again. 5/10.

Kanae Yukino

This design is so close to being something I absolutely adore, extemely simple colour scheme with a very coherent aesthetic that more than befits the face of the girl wearing it, the punk look is just to die for. Except that lingerie texture on the glove things and whatever that coming out of her pocket is, it’s an attempt to retain elements of traditional magical girl designs with no consideration for how that would actually look, that being fucking ridiculous. The entire gloves look ridiculous in fact, why the fuck do they get so huge and gross and I hate it, completely ruins the entire design. 6/10.

Tsukuyo Amane

Everything I said about her sister again, but the blue here looks better than the blue for Tsukasa, but also the cloth draping down from the skirt doesn’t go well with said blue sash and the ribbons I mentioned for Tsukasa, just to much shit draping down basically. 6/10 as well because even if I like Tsukasa’s design more there’s not actually enough meaningful difference for them to get different scores.

Ren Isuzu

10/10. She’s my exact moe. This design is impossibly adorably cute as fuck and it makes me happy to even look at. It’s a sort of bigger, poofier looking outfit that suggests she’s still distant, but the loose sleeves and fucking mega cute camisole show she’s opening up to people and I love it so much. Ren’s my favourite ever. I already said it but the 10/10 bears repeating, I love her so much. She’s so cute. Look at the flower in her hair it’s mega great, she’s so pretty. Fuck. I love her. Very possbibly my favourite Magia Record design.

Felicia Mitsuki

We’re finally at another main character, and just like Iroha, Felicia’s design is a controversial one. And unlike with Iroha, I’m not as interested in defending it, because I don’t think it looks super great. But just to get what I like out of the way, it’s mostly a super cute design, I love the horns a lot since they’re kinda like devil horns which hints at her super gremlin energy but then her backstory involves cows in some way or whatever which contextualises the horns nicely. I’m also big on the hood since it’s super cute and whatever the fuck the massive fabric ponytails are, they’re pretty nice too. It’s also a great colour scheme and I like the fairly minimal use of blacks - most redesigns address the entire front of her body being exposed by covering her with a black fabric that hurts the colour scheme and honestly I’d call the bare midriff better. But honestly what looks goofiest about it to me is just the weird two belts going on, the chain going between them that looks off, and also because of how the purple area on her chest cups over the black fabric beneath she just genuinely looks like she’s wearing a bra over everything else. It’s a design that leans into fanservice to the point of just looking stupid, and I think it’s very unbefitting of a hammer-wielding berserker as well. Overall I mostly like the aesthetic but that holds it back a good bit so, 6/10.

Emiri Kisaki

Yo I fuckin love this one, right, because every single element of it goes super well together for me, the colour scheme is really really good and I love how well it blends this like devilish girl aesthetic with magical girl stuff too, like her hair bangles or whatever taking a horn shape, and the heart tail, and the collar being spiked like bat wings, the whole thing just looks super fucking great and I love it. Also midriff doesn’t bug me in the slightest because it just looks good, plain and simple. Big fan. 8/10.

Ria Ami

So like, I like the torso area of this design, it’s got a very stage performer look with a good colour palette and a great Soul Gem, but then the moment we get to the lower body it’s just, kind of a mess, with the way the coat tails out and curls around the frills just looking way too busy and goofy. Plus the massive bow on the back needing to tail down as well just adds to the excess and I’m not huge on it. Also I get that the skirt wanted to break the colour palette up but, it probably would’ve looked just fine if they stuck to pink of white. Idk. Not huge on this one, 4/10.

Ayaka Mariko

This is another design that’s kinda, almost there for me. I’m biased anyway since she was designed by AFRO but she’s got a really cute sort of clown aesthetic that I actually really like, and while the skirt is pretty wild I do think it works. She’s also got a nice colour scheme, the contrast between the kinda pale blues and vibrant pinks actually looks really good. My main problems are the hair, because two sets of twintails just looks off, and uh, that same problem with the coat thing that everyone else has - that split in the middle that rides all the way up to her chest with no indication of anything beneath. The thing is it looks fine at a glance, but the moment you put any thought into what you’re actually looking at it just looks dumb, if that coat should fly up in battle would we literally just see her entire tits? It’s another case of fanservice going weirdly far at the expense of me being able to take the design seriously. 5/10.

Kanoko Yayoi

This is a design that mostly just, I don’t personally find appealing. I’m not really big on those huge skirt-like shorts that she’s got, if it were just a skirt I’d probably like it exponentially more, also those things dangling from the back of her thigh highs are actually trails from a ribbon on her back and I just think that’s unnecessary clutter. And then everything else about it I just find kinda, I guess boring. Which I could say anything more productive about the look but since it inspires nothing in me, that really is all I’ve got. 3/10.

Kuro

Should I be including Kuro? It’s just the Magius robe. Is that special enough? Eh, sure. It’s fine, sorta standard cultish look, but I like the wings on the hood. They tie into the Wings of Magius’ identity in a very unsubtle way, but they’re kinda positioned like eyes from that perspective which is certainly ominous. Nothing about this stands out much but it doesn’t look bad or anything either so. 6/10.

Ao Kasane

It’s, a fuckin swimsuit. But she’s got dumb looking sleeves, that dumb looking scarf that might be connected to those dumb looking hair-tie things, another dangly Soul Gem that looks dumb, and those boots that aren’t that dumb but don’t go with the outfit at all and especially don’t go with those dumb fabric whatevers around her knees. 2/10.

Sunao Toki

This outfit’s so unbelievably cluttered that it hurts to look at lol. I think it wants to look like old royalty? As in like some real Macbeth era shit? But it looks really bad, the skirt is way too much, it’s dumb that it’s longer at the back and the transparent fabric is way too much, plis the bow she has on her torso looks dmb facing forward and the mesh she has on like her entire upper body is a nightmare. I hate it. 2/10.

Mayu Kozue

I really like this one. It’s a super pretty design for a super pretty girl and I like the colour scheme a lot, it’s really cute and pleasant and I love the black used that compliments her hair. Plus that like open waistcoat or whatever she has on her top, it’s really nice looking and gives her waist some good variety. Also just the bubble aesthetic with the spots on the dress and bubbly gems dangling from the end, it looks nice. Only real point against it are the like, paintbrush things in her hair, they look bad and you could’ve put them somewhere else if you wanted to show she’s an artist. I’m also not big on the leggings being that shade of blue, cause they use that for the bows and the bracelets and it looks good as a minor colour there but the leggings is too much for me. Otherwise good though. 7/10.

Konoha Shizumi

To get what might be obvious at this point out of the way, I adore this colour scheme, it’s so unbelievably pretty and another one that’s just very to my taste, I especially love that black is very much the dominant colour, it looks super good. But not unlike her Azalea peers, Konoha just has a few oddities to the actual shape of her outfit that throw me off. More specifically the weird fuckin coat thing again. Also having the winged sleeve things right below another set of sleeve things, it’s just a bit much. I also don’t think the gold chain at the top of the skirt is necessary either. But honestly other than those things it’s a really pretty design, literally just shape that top better and it’d be a favourite. 7/10.

Rena Minami

Rena’s design is really cute and pretty! I like it a lot, it’s kinda got a magical idol feel to it, befitting of an idol fan such as herself. I really love the simplicity of the stripes, it makes the dress stand out quite a lot against many of the other designs from MagiReco. I do think we probably didn’t need the huge ass tailed fabrics coming from the back since the bow does that purpose much better and in a more simplistic way, but eh. Black arm things is also weird, doesn’t mix the palette in a good way. I also think the frills in her arms either should’ve been removed since they look kinda odd anyway, or at least changed to pink to match the bit in her skirt and also her scrunchies. Overall a few oddities but still very nice to look at, I’d go 7/10.

Meiyui Chun

This is another design that looks, mostly pretty good, it has a very obvious Chinese influence that looks nice and while the blue and white colour scheme is super basic it works. But the problem is absolutely how big the entire lower half and also sleeves are. They’re impractically long for combat in the case of the sleeves, way too frilly given that what’s her weapon again? Oh yeah fuckin Wolverine style claws! Bit ridiculous to combine something like that with sleeves that huge and frilly. Design’s just a lot sorta, poofier than the lightly dressed look you’d want for someone who fights with those as weapons. 5/10.

Asuka Tatsuki

This one’s not bad. I like the obvious samurai influence with the plate armour around the skirt and torso, and I’m fine enough with the tits being taped up for achieving a similar idea, but then I feel those two are different approaches to the same idea that doesn’t really work. What I mean is you might associate the taped up tits with a samurai in training, while the full armour is for going out into battle. It’s all samurai influence but it’s different influences that mesh poorly.  Commit to one side or the other. Also because the tape tits are all white and then she’s got that ugly unnecessary robe cloak cape whatever on, her upper torso is really plain and it’s kinda boring. 5/10.

Nanaka Tokiwa

First of all, adore the colour scheme, it’s nice having a water girl that isn’t blue and I love that her palette sorta gets a little brighter as you approach the top, it’s got a nice gradient feel I really like. And then the obviously traditional Japanese influence looks really pretty as well and I do think the more magical girly top is a nice touch that’s super cute. That being said it could probably tone down the frills maybe a little bit around there since like, yeah, and also, I’m not feeling the open shoulders. The Japanesey bit and the magical girly bit both look good on their own but the shoulders being so open makes the cut between them feel off, and also like, those sleeves are so low and big for a sword wielder that it feels stupidly impractical. 6/10.

Yachiyo Nanami

Next main character arrived! I really like Yachiyo’s design, I think the dress is super pretty and befitting of a model, with its slight gradient and the stars lining it keeping it from being too visually stale. The huge slit makes me think it wouldn’t suck for combat too, and like she wields a spear anyway so, plus the little golden banglet brings some good colour as well. The entire upper body is super pretty too, I love the armour and the like black latex whatever underneath, like Yachiyo just looks experienced and it’s super great. I think her headdress is real pretty but I might actually prefer the anime’s way simpler cloth thing to all these beads, though they both work well. 9/10 honestly.

Maria Yuki

This is just another design with way too much going on for me to know what to think. I’d say it’s overall pretty, but mostly just because the actual girl is super beautiful. But the dress is just, utter hell. We’ve got a huge bow on the back, the aprony skirt, a tighter skirt below that, an outer skirt thing behind the bow, it’s just so much to take in, and then the frilly shoulders clash really badly with the whatever those are around her upper arms, there are so many patterns of clothing and objects around her chest, it’s just too much information to digest. 4/10.

Temari Kira

This is another one where I wouldn’t really say I think the design is bad, but it’s not really my thing. Kinda just don’t like the girl’s face honestly. And she has a pretty cool coat even if the inside design of it doesn’t match the rest of her outfit, but I also don’t think the coat needs to be as open as it is. Like the parts of the coat above her tits that are only rolled up so we can see more of her tits, but then there’s a collar for the coat above that and it just looks off for me. Her neck area’s just busy anyway, we’ve got the coat collar, she’s got a collar, a chain links the coat, and her Soul Gem is there too with loads of studs and stuff. Just not big on it really. It also annoys me that the ribbon in her hair is the only usage of that colour in her entire design, a bit more matching would be nice. 3/10.

Seika Kumi

Magia Record seems to have quite a lot of girls that just, look perfectly fine and inspire no other thoughts in me. This design is one of those. I like how the coat opens into a heart shape, but then it also opens down into a big tailcoat that looks kinda silly on the inside and then opens into a collar at the top and it’s like, why this bitch gotta open her coat so much. Also the colours, location of the frills, that fluffy neck thing and just the sorta style of jacket makes me think she’s supposed to have a winter theme, but maybe it’s the hat or something but I just don’t feel it. This girl’s design is like, so little more than fine and that’s so boring. 4/10.

Akira Shinobu

Water girls sure are plagued with sleeves too huge for their main combat option to be practical, huh? And that’s my main gripe with the design of this fistfighting character, but otherwise I think she’s fine. I like the sorta sports bra and shorts since they’re reminiscent of like MMA clothing which fits this girl, and honestly I quite like the look of that belted down fabric around her torso as and the strung up socks as well, silly though they may be. That being said, the aforementioned sleeves are dumb, and I also don’t really like her hood, nor the sort of frill cape she has around it too? Mostly a design I like but that sorta business around the upper torso holds it back. 6/10.

Natsuki Utsuho

And to finish up the water girls, we have this absolute nightmare. To just get the good out of the way, I do like the colour scheme. There’s a consistent application of colours for the most part, with a dominant blue, white as the main secondary colour, black and yellow to compliment those, and then the green is only used for those uh, bracelet things she also has as a collar. It’s honestly fairly simple but with a bit more expression than just “water girl so = blue”. But when we get to the actual design it’s just a cluttered mess that I hate looking at, the dress and especially the entire arm region are just so unbelievably busy and it’s impossible to get anything out of any of it, it’s just garbage everywhere. The only part of the actual outfit I like is the visor but that’s because it’s the only thing that looks decent, even if it ends up sticking out like a sore thumb because of that. 2/10 honestly.

Hagumu Azumi

And to open up flame girls is this bitch, and she’s an okay start? I like the colours, I like a lot of the shapes, the leather in general looks pretty nice, mostly I just don’t like how the red dress thing pokes through the, I’ll call it armour, and also I don’t like that the skirt is full at the back but open at the front, that I just don’t like that look in general should be clear by this point lol. Happy to have opened with a girl that’s not needlessly complicated and busy to look at at least. 5/10.

Ryouko Natsu

Continuing on from the last okay design is another okay design, one that just reminds me of Nanaka but worse. It has the same problems with the sleeves being weird, all those frills that make up the skirt are a horrible clash with the otherwise very Japanese look, and she’s got that bow around her waist that splits into two dangly bits, but also a scarf dangling around a similar location, and an extra tiny bow just to keep the pattern going. It’s just a bit much. Also I don’t really like her colour scheme either, red and blue can go well together but here they just, don’t, she honestly would’ve looked better had her blue stuff all been black as well. 4/10 with the biggest saving grace being that the actual girl is hot.

Touka Satomi

Happy to say we’ve found a design I really like! It’s been a while huh? Touka’s just super cute and I really love everything about her outfit. It’s got a sort of autumnal colour scheme almost, albeit with a sinister feel coming from the dominance of black. The cravat and waistcoat, plus whatever the name of that frame keeping her skirt stretched is, it all gives her this very pretentious look that fits her super well, and I can even handle the open skirt since it transitions from the open coat that looks super great. All I’d really say against it is that she probably doesn’t need the bows on her sleeve, but that’s such a small thing anyway so, who cares? 8/10.

Himika Mao

You ever see a design that so obviously wants to be as ridiculous as possible but it literally gets too ridiculous that you can’t even take it seriously as a ridiculous design? Yeah this is that. Imagine coming up with this design, let alone doing so and being happy with it. Imagine being the absolute fucking buffoon who decided that this was acceptable as a character design. It bends over so fucking far to try be hot and it literally can’t be because fucking look at it! If you don’t like fanservice you’re gonna complain because look at the fanservice and if you do like fanservice you’re gonna laugh at how hard this one had to try to be hot with the goofy fucking clown pants. Absolutely trash design. 1/10. I’m writing these as I go through the wiki and I’ve not really “seen” every design yet but I’m very confident in calling this one the absolute worst in the entire game.

Karin Misono

This one’s really cute! I really love the Halloween witch aesthetic, and ‘m a big fan of the hat’s tip that just sorta, keeps going, such that it dangles near her hand, it’s super cute. And despite the witch look. from her white skirt and that cute old bow, we can tell she’s still a very good girl. Just looks real nice really. 7/10.

Momoka Togame

Honestly I’m not huge on Momoko’s design.  I like the sort of flower petal look she has going around the skirt, the white looks good and then Momoko herself is quite pretty, but uh, that’s about it. Otherwise I think her colour palette is kinda ugly and the outfit isn’t that great either. Particularly I don’t like that the nature of the outfit is such that we can see her little spandex pantsu, it’s not even the fanservice that bothers me I just think it looks dumb, oddly reminiscent of what old caped superheroes have and it just prevents her lower body from looking good. It’s not horrible, but it’s not great either. 5/10.

Tsuruno Yui

Hey look, another main character! I really like Tsuruno’s design, it’s another one that’s just really cute and there’s a sort of elegance yet flamboyance to it that works with her character and weapon, I also really love the hair whatever in her ponytail, it goes super well with the big ass bows around her hips. The only thing is that I’m not personally super into orange, so even though I think she’s got a great colour scheme it doesn’t actually do a lot for me, which unfortunately holds her back for me. Honestly though she’s still an 8/10.

Meguru Hibiki

It feels like we’ve had quite a few girls with a sort of circus/stage performer type look, but this girl takes the cake as the best one. I just think this is a design that looks good, the shirt’s simple and cute, the jacket’s really pretty and eccentric without being needlessly complex, and then I think the cape and bow tie it all together really neatly. From the real short shorts and the midriff it does want to be hot, but it doesn’t go to ridiculous lengths to try be hot, so it works. And her colour scheme is really good too, blonde hair is a particularly good choice with the rest of the outfit. Saying that, I think the actual design of her hair is, a bit much, a problem accentuated by the hat, so that does hold her back a little bit. 7/10 though. Still solid.

Ranka Chizu

Hahahaha she’s a gamer! Honestly I fuckin love this design. The gamer girl is pretty as hell and I adore the design on her top, specifically the Soul Gem placement is really really aesthetically pleasing. Speaking as a a gamer, this design is very peak gamer, though with a degree of magical girl flair that I obviously love, the cravat in particular being very adorable and establishing he as a class above the rest of her kin. U love it. Strong 8/10.

Seira Mihono

So is this girl supposed to be like, somebody who wants to make kaiju movies? Cause that hood is really monster-like and she’s got the clapperboard pockets (I like those btw) which seem to suggest that she’s into kaiju movies to me. This design’s weird and I feel like it wants to sorta combine a few different aesthetics inways that don’t really work. The shorts are super baggy but get cut off by what look to be rings, and then they’re tied together in a way reminiscent of boxing shorts, and then there’s the aforementioned pockets, and it’s like, I don’t actually get what image they want with the shorts. And then the upper body’s also weird with the big sleeves and hood not really going with how form fitting the actual top part is. I do mostly like how this looks but it’s got enough weirdness going on for it to not warrant anything more than a 6/10 from me.

Ryou Midori

Is this another one of those “the split rides up to her tits” looks? Seems like it, but honestly the suspenders save it for me, so this design has that going for it. But then outside of that she looks super, I guess plain to me? The striped whatevers on her arms and legs are the only real standouts but I don’t like the asymmetry on the leg ones and the arm ones just look bad to me. I also don’t ike how she has the big collars around her wrists but then fingerless gloves don’t connect to those. I feel like that’d look a lot better. Idk. 5/10.

Reira Ibuki

If you’ve been reading for this long, you’ve almost certainly gathered that I don’t really care about fanservice in Magia Record unless it looks really dumb. And this is one of those times. Though not quite Himika Mao levels of ridiculous, I do think the “fully covered literally everywhere except the pants” look is really bad. If it’s just her top half, she looks fine, I like the sorta butterfly look and she’s got quite a pleasant palette. I don’t think I’d be huge on the trousers were they properly filled in, her upper body looks like it’d go better into a skirt, but I’ve seen redesigns that address the pants thing and those look decent so maybe not. It’s just that fuckin pants thing is so bad that it destroys my ability to like the design at all. 2/10.

Aimi Eri

Hey! A design I like! It feels like it’s been forever but then I’ve taken a lot of breaks while writing this so it’s probably just that. But nah this design’s great, she’s really cute, it’s got an extremely simple and appealing theme, and the frills keep that magical girl feel without being at all overbearing. It’s just really nice, plain and simple. 8/10.

Rika Ayano

Yeah no wow Rika is fucking adorable. I just love this look, plain and simple. The skirt and collar are super sailor fuku and it’s got loads of really simple yet incredibly cute magical girl-ish additions to it that look really really nice. Fuckin 9/10 honestly this girl’s great.

Ayame Mikuri

Closing off the Azalea girls, fuckin finally, is yet another girl that suffers the problems they all do, but now in white! Yeah those whatever the fuck sleeves going into the whatever the fuck coat are still dumb and I don’t like them. And then I don’t really like the dress she has on underneath it, I’m not fond of how it’s only really connected in the middle, and honestly just the irregular shape of it bugs me. There’s also so much just, weird shit going on around it. We’ve got a bow, those dangling pomfy things, gold little chain, her Soul Gem is ugly, I don’t like those little hearts on her left that appear to be on the coat thing, I can’t really take the rabbit tights seriously, there’s just way more to dislike about this outfit than there is to like. 4/10.

Manaka Kurumi

And let’s close off the fire girls with another good one. Like Aimi we’ve just got a very clear theme with a nice magical girl flair that all looks super cute. I particularly like the little oven glove cape she’s got going on, it’s really nice. Though I think her colour palette is a little plain, which holds the design back for me a little. Still a 7/10 though, I just like cowboys more.

Shigure Miyabi

Moving onto forest girls, and bringing us ever closer to being done with this fucking post, we’ve got Shigure. And like, mostly I think this design’s fine. Her colour scheme’s similar to Momoko’s but I think the stronger emphasis on green gives this the better palette, and then the actual outfit’s pretty cute, I like the light hoodie look, plus the arm warmer things and the leg warmers that match her ear muffs are pretty cute as well. But I’ve got two big problems - the first is that turtleneck-ish collar thing that doesn’t work with the open hoodie and just busies up that area while looking dumb, and the second is, perhaps predictably, that skirt riding straight up and into her vagina. It just looks stupid, it’s so arbitrarily there for the sake of fanservice and I hate it. Again I don’t hate fanservice but I hate when fanservice makes a design look dumb and this is yet another instance of that. 4/10.

Chiharu Hiroe

God I have to wonder if it’s possible to put that super mustardy yellow on anything and have it look good. Cause it doesn’t look good here. Doesn’t really go well with either the blues or reds either, which themselves don’t go together. The colour palette on this girl just makes her awful to look at. Even the shape of the outfit doesn’t save it, that weird overcoat gown thing looks almost pyjama like and clashes really badly with that more Japanese robe underneath, plus the plaid across that robe only serves to make the design needlessly more complicated, and whatever that pomfball talisman hanging by her chest is, I feel like it’d look better if it weren’t hanging so low. 3/10.

Nemu Hiiragi

Remember Mikura? Dark girl with graduate/professor theme? Yeah what if we made the design work and gave it to a cute loli? I really like how Nemu looks, the sorta paler autumnal colours she has make her look a little more inviting than Touka, not that I know enough about her character to know that’s true, but the black cape and graduation hat do keep her feeling a little sinister but also still smart. It’s also nice having a girl whose sleeves go that far over her hands without that girl needing to wield swords or wolverine claws, for Nemu is a ranged combatant and so those won’t get in her way. I like it. I don’t think she’s as cute as Touka, also her hair is a little busy (she’s got braided pigtails and the little loops but she’s got another set of smaller pigtails underneath even that, way too much) but she’s still pretty good and is our first grass girl who doesn’t suck to look at so, yeah! 7/10.

Mito Aino

This girl’s pretty cute! She’s a forest archer and I think the colour scheme really sells you on that, it’s all pretty subdued but it gives her a nice feel, I really like it. And the sweater texture on the undershirt specifically is really cute. I really like her cape too, combined with some of her fluffy looking frills it gives off these sorta moth vibes, and while I’m scared of moths, adorable anime girls wearing clothing vaguely evocative of moths is something I can handle just fine. Also while her hair is pretty big this is one of the few hooded designs where I can feasibly see her wear the hood without her hair being just, unbelievably in the way. I think the open sides and back of the top seem like they’d look a little weird, specifically because she has that sweater texture yet it doesn’t hug her torso like a sweater would, but it’s not really a huge distraction or anything, it’s pretty subtle after all. Beyond that I'm not big on the glvoes-that-suddenly-get-way-wider look, but like, eh. 7/10.

Alina Gray

Remember when I said Ren was very possibly my favourite Magia Record design? Yeah, let’s meet the reason that she’s stuck at “possibly”. Ladies and gentlemen, allow me to introduce you to Magia Record’s third 10/10 girl. Alina looks fucking brilliant, hats off to MagiReco for giving me a green haired anime girl and having her look not just good, not even just great, but perfect. Her outfit is so simple but so stylish, so cute yet so beautiful, so streamlined yet so Alina. I love the skirt that uses the cold colours of the rainbow between the blacks to give her this villainish look and be reminiscent of a paintbrush and just look super good, the chain around the skirt going into the bow matches the one on the hat and keeps the area from being too simple without overdoing it, compliments her hair great too, and speaking of that area the hat is just, so fucking good, I love it so much. And also, the fanservice! It looks good! Garterbelts and fishnets look hot and I love the little fluffy bit that matches the ones on her wrists, they used fanservice to actually enhance a design and it actually looks good! I love Alina’s design, I already said 10/10 but it’s worth repeating, Alina’s an absolute 10/10.

Meru Anna

Thankfully after Alina, the grass designs aren’t immediately going to shit. I like Meru’s (Mel’s?) design a good amount, it’s got an extremely simple shape and colour palette, but the little stars around the base of the dress keep it visually interesting, as does the bow around the chest keep that place the same. However, I do find that her hand ribbons being attached to one another is a little clunky, and combined with the huge ass veil behind her head gives her a lot of random shit in the way if she’s trying to move about. I know she’s a ranged fighter so it’s not that huge a deal, but it still looks to be a bit much, and hurts the otherwise very simple design. Overall solid though, 7/10.

Kaede Akino

Continuing the trend of girls after Alina not being immediately shit is Kaede, another mega cutie with a super nice design. Kaede’s colour scheme is really nice and makes me feel all warm and comfy, she’s got this sorta friendly forest witch look going on that I really love, the shape of her little cloak is super damn good, I especially love how it sorta capes around the front at the top, it looks great. I think for this sprite, the hat looks a little off, but it’s fine from other angles. I do have to wonder how necessary the hat was with the feathers in her hair though, cause the feather’s look great but having a hat you know will never ever be worn since it’d clash with the feathers seems odd, you know? Eh, she’s adorable as hell either way, who cares. I do like the midriff, I don’t think it’s especially silly looking or anything, though I’ll concede I have seen a redesign that I preferred. Lots of them just shove orange there and it looks bad because too much orange, but this one specific redesign I saw, don’t remember who by, it covered it with some brown fabrics to match the shorts, and it looked super great. So yeah that’s a thing. She still looks fine normally though, I think she’s 8/10, the colour palette being what boosts her up from a 7.

Sana Futaba

At long last, the main characters, the Mikazuki Five, are complete! And Sana’s gonna do us a favour and continue the trend of really good looking grass girls as well. They got off to a weak start in the order of this post but I’m honestly tempted to call them the type with the strongest overall designs, so hey that’s pretty good praise, right? But yeah, Sana. I mean, just look at her. She’s just another strongly themed, strongly presented magical girl with a nice colour palette and basically nothing going against her. All her extra veils and shit go really well with her character and wish, and given she fights with a massive fucking shield anyway it’s not like they’d be in the way which is a plus. She’s obviously a major cutie as well, the turtleneck sweater being a huge highlight. And she’s also one of the most modestly designed MagiReco characters, and again I don’t mind the fanservice but a design with none is a good change of pace, and such a modest look is befitting of her nervous demeanour. I really like Sana’s design, so we’re going 9/10.

Hinano Miyako

God, grass really is just popping off, isn’t it? Hinano once again presents us with a design that’s really simple, cute, magical girl-ish, and a little sexy too without needing to try too hard to be that. However, I would say that the scientist theming is a little weak. She’s got the lab coat, and it look super cute, I could question the practicality of the open shoulder look but it’s so adorable that I don’t even want to, but then if we take off her coat for a second then, she just kinda looks cool, but isn’t obviously anything specific beyond a magical girl. I realise there’s a bit less obviously evocative imagery for a scientist that you could use on an outfit compared to, say, a cowboy or a chef, but still, I wish they’d tried a little harder. Still honestly a 7/10 though.

Kako Natsume

Well, the streak had to end someday. Truth be told, if you were to imagine like, low-res Kako, I think I’d really like it. Like, imagine you can’t see her well enough to make out the detail, and it’s just the sorta cream-beige main cloak with big black sleeves, and some gold highlights. It looks not bad, right? And her actual head is mega super adorable, I love her hair shape and colour, she probably doesn’t need both flowers but if we just take her head only and put it on the low-res bod she looks super nice. And since MagiReco uses chibis for battle, Kako actually does look super nice in game, since that little amount of detail does work with her. It’s the moment you see the full thing in full-res and it just, feels like a lot. Suddenly there are so many weird small details, mostly hidden uses of colours that become too much when you see them, the actual shape of particularly the lower half is really weird, and the general asymmetry of the lower half really hurts the overall thing. It’s just a design that gets a lot worse hte moment you really look at it, and that sucks. Though honestly, the broader thing and Kako’s head are good enough for me to not want to give it any lower than a 6, so we’re still in positive score territory. The streak isn’t over yet!

Moka Megumi

Yeah see? We’re back on track. This very chocolate cake looking magical girl has quite a nice design, with simple shapes that are very evocative of uh, fucking cake. I particularly like the floured texture They use to naturally break up her colour palette,looks really nice. It’s not a theme I‘m super into and I don’t generally like brown as the dominant colour on anything but she looks nice, so you know. 7/10.

Sakuya Suzuka

Hahahaha this girl is a fucking nightmare! Yeah the streak is absolutely over now, wow. So this girl’s supposed to be like a track and field runner I think but the only thing they retained from that element is the shorts and what appears to be one of those sport bra-esque tops they wear for the sport. Except the former is, belted on, with a skirt around it, which looks dumb, and then the latter has that weird crop-top hoodie with the massive fucking strings dangling around it and it also looks bad. I also might just be conditioned into thinking the whole thing is bad but like the girl has booty shorts and thigh highs on for max zettai ryouiki and I’m not even thinking it looks good. Like, Christ. And the obvious elephant in the room are her elephant sized eyes with the flesh coloured sclera, like the fuckin very first Scooby Doo show but having anime eyes makes it so exponentially worse. I’m not gonna bother detailing why I hate them, I think everyone does, I personally genuinely can’t even look at her face because of them, so, that should show what I think of her design. Ladies and gentlemen, we have our second 1/10. Not even sure if this is worse than Himika’s, because while this outfit is a 2/10 at best the eyes really are just that awful, whereas everything about Himika is a 1/10 but at least her eyes don’t look like vortexes that want to suck my soul out of my body.

Konomi Haruna

Thankfully, despite the streak-ending horrors we just witnessed, the last grass girl lets us go out on a high note. Konomi’s just cute, plain and simple. I think her dress is all really nice shapes and I particularly love the sort of cardigan look they go for with the sleeves, and the open dress that’s longer at the back looks good for once. She’s got quite a whmisical, almost forest fairy sorta design, I quite like it. Strong 7/10.

Yozuru Sasame

Finally, we arrive at the void girls. And this girl’s kind of a meh start. Black, white and gold is a really nice colour scheme, but I don’t really like the gold used here, so now one of the key components of the colour scheme is working against the design rather than for it. And then outside of that it’s kinda just, a little boring. It seems evocative of stage magicians again but its usage of those elements doesn’t really, do anything for me I guess. And the diamond sash doesn’t even look nearly as good as Sayuki’s. Diamond cut in legs also just looks sorta dumb. This design is perfeectly mediocre in that it has very little going for it but very little going against it, and so I’d give it a 5/10.

Livia Medeiros

Moving on we’ve got this absolute babe. Magia Record’s first and so far only, even with unreleased girls, dark skinned magical girl. Neato. And I quite like her design as well, which is something you always want. In particular she’s got a really great colour scheme, the blacks and dark greys going really well with the purples, plus the white coat breaking things up in a really nice way that complements the smaller whites used elsewhere. She’s also just like, one of the hotter designs in MagiReco, but not in such a way where they forced in fanservice at the expense of the design looking good, she’s just like actually sexy without making the outfit look dumb to accomplish that. That’s pretty sick. I’d go 7/10.

Mitama Yakumo

At long last, we have the last magical girl from the page I’m using, our coordinator, resident ketchup-mustard drinking bastard, Mitama. I like her design. I think the blue, more work dress looking outfit gives her a look of normalcy among magical girls, which works for someone who’s not really an active combatant. But then the way the coat tails out has enough magical girl flair, plus the frills and shit around the outfit, to remind you that, yeah she is a magical girl so she’ll probably still kick your ass idk. I do think the design gets a bit busy around the collar area though, cause she’s got the actual shirt collar, that’s got a bow around it, that bow has a flower on it, then what appears to be 2 cravats beneath it, and then the coat collar thing rides up around there too plus with there being no sleeves to speak of the frills close in on that areain a way that just, makes the whole thing quite a lot to look at. Mitama’s design looks fairly simple at a glance but there’s some levels of detail I don’t think add to it and some streamlining might be beneficial. 7/10 though, overall I’m a fan. We’re so nearly done.

Ashley Taylor

Except actually, we’ve got another dark girl to get through. Truthfully, I’m not big on Ashley’s design. It’s this weird look that’s colourfully elaborate while being plain, weirdly complicated in places yet simple in others. The type of thing with no real rhythm or reason to what’s where and why, in a way that doesn’t really work but doesn’t not work, you know? It’s a design I can just, look at and be like “she looks decent”. Except from the like, red sleeve things, they really detract from the upper body’s appeal. I also don’t think she needs the little bone accessory in her hair when she’s got her bear with a bow thing and also her hair’s super colourful from the highlights anyway. Idk, she just looks sorta off to me. Nothing I know about her character is encouarging either, so. 5/10 I guess?

Yesterday I went to the theater live viewing of Love Live Fes Day 1 (1/18/2020).

I went as an Aqours fan so that will heavily influence my thoughts on it, just to get that out of the way. 

For a rough outline of the program, Aqours opened the show with Mitaiken Horizon in their new butterfly outfits (which looked AMAZING). Then the Nijigaku girls came out. They performed together, and then four of them did solos (Ayumi, Rina, Kanata, Karin) before they performed together one last time. (I’m assuming the other five will do solos on Day 2.) Then Aqours came out and performed as units, followed by Saint Snow, and then Aqours all together in their Mirai Ticket outfits on the ship(!) from Sailing to the Sunshine. And finally, μ's came out and did a big medley of their biggest songs before ending with Snow Halation. 

This was my first time seeing μ's live (or rather “live”) and I was actually really nervous about it. Because I knew everyone else would probably know all the callouts and cheering moves and I was just frantically trying to remember their colors. People were warming up while they were playing songs before the show started and I was like sweating bullets hahah. But I hoped I knew the songs well enough to fake it, and I more or less did. But I missed the color change from white -> orange in Snow Halation EVEN THOUGH I KNEW IT WAS COMING AHHHH. It just took me a couple seconds but for everyone else in the theater it was instant. 

Hahah and this was for a group I’m at least “supposed” to know. Nijigaku was like ????????? But thankfully before they came out all their colors were shown on the screen, which gave me about 30 seconds to choose a favorite. I went with Rina who I have been kinda leaning towards anyway, and I’m feeling good about it. (Although I was tempted to pick Ayumu just so I would have all pink hahah. Since Aqours = Ruby and μ's = Nico for me). Rina’s voice actress doesn’t have to perform with a screen over her face thankfully, but she has a real working one when she does her intro which kinda blew my mind. She also took the Rina-chan Board out for a little bit during her performance which was cute. 

Ah man I felt so much more comfortable when Aqours came out though because I know everything effortlessly and I didn’t have to constantly check around me for cues. MY GIRLS. I feel like Aqours performed for the longest out of the three main groups (much to the chagrin of people waiting for μ's....). They were also the only group to have costume changes (Mitaiken Horizon -> unit outfits -> Mirai Ticket). This made sense to me because they have the best chops right now (IDK how to say that in non-marching band terminology) since they have been actively performing for years while Nijigaku is brand new and μ's has been on break. Their set was even longer if you count Saint Snow? 

But ohhh gosh Saint Snow were so wonderful too. Every event I see them at you can tell they’re just SO HAPPY to be included. Because they know they aren’t headliners and the probably.... never... will be... I feel like they may sometimes feel like they just exist to give Aqours time to change costumes BUT!!! BELIEVE AGAIN WAS SO GOOD AHHHH!!  Everyone got SO into it. There are so many callouts. People practically yell Leah’s whole part. It may have been the most excited the crowd was before μ's came out....

Speaking of which....

I could really tell most people in my theater were there for μ's and just waiting for them the whole time. Which is understandable as it’s been forever but DAMN when they finally came out everyone went F’IN CRAZY! I was like wiping spit off my cheek from people yelling. This was just my theater, but only like 10-20% of people stood during Nijigaku, about 40-50% during Aqours, and like 80-90% during μ's.

A silly little part of me had been thinking the Aqours surpassed or at least caught up to μ's popularity, but I guess not eh. 

After μ's finished their set they called out all the other groups on stage and the leader of each group spoke for each of them. Gosh the Nijigaku girls looked young when they were all together! When it was An-chan’s turn to speak for Aqours she was just like... “THAT WAS THE GREATEST!!!” Followed by a long pause. Followed by “I love Love Live” and just bursting into tears. (AN-CHAN!!!!!!)

And now, what do you do when you have every member of every Love Live Group all on stage at once? Well of course, you.... End the show.

I was really shocked there was no encore. I mean wouldn’t you expect them to all sing something together? And if not that then a medley? And if not that then a μ's encore and the other girls are cheerleaders or something? But no, nothing. 

I’m really, really curious if they will do an encore today for Day 2 or not. They also had no real talk sessions except for each group introducing themselves, more or less. But I suppose they also had less time to fill with all these groups to cover for each other. (When these groups perform solo they have like animated segments and such to cover for when they are changing costumes but it wasn’t needed here because Nijigaku covered the first one for Aqours, Saint Snow covered the second, and nobody else needed to change costumes.) So it was pretty much straight performances. Not even any announcements. (Yet?) Huh.

tl;dr Pure Palette can do everything and this was so pointless. 

I mean... this was all really pointless.

First off, why wouldn’t their manager believe Pure Palette could handle it? They’re Diamond Friends now, and they’ve shown they’re capable. I can’t wrap my head around why she would put up such a fuss besides the fact we needed some artificially manufactured drama to keep the show interesting because... it’s not. It’s really not.

Also, again, we needed to show just how much better Pure Palette is than everyone else and how they’re the miracle Friends who will bring smiles and sunshine back to Solvette again.

Look, the race was pointless we all knew they were going to win. Isn’t this the time we should be getting ready for the Diamond Friends cup? They haven’t mentioned that yet at all. I guess it’s not important when your main unit IS the Diamond Friends. Guess if it comes around, we know who’s going to win that...

On the bright side, Charlotte setting this at the end of the summer gives me hope we ARE going to get a smaller season. After all, what’s left after we handle the season’s big Jeweling Dress thing and bring good weather back to Solvette? Why would we care about Diamond Friends or anything else after literally saving a country? It would be such a step down that it would make things utterly boring.

Of course... their summer could be our spring so it might be drawn out and bore the shit out of me. IDK.

Really, I have a problem with the show hyping up Pure Palette so much. We get it - they’re practically perfect. We don’t need everyone from Love Me Tear to the smaller units to say it. There’s hitting your audience over the head with shit, and pulverizing them with it. I have a headache, how about  you?

Anyway, the stage was bullshit and I already ranted about that previously. Next episode is the required anime summer beach scene. I don’t expect anything vitally important to plot, so... eh.

If I sound tired, it’s cause I am. Why am I still watching this again? My favorite idols are never going to get even a quarter of the show’s attention. It’s just the Pure Palette show with inclusions of other ones to give fans the hope to keep watching. Go play the game if you can, might be better.

Revue Starlight 4: Where in Tokyo is Hikari Kagura?

Sup everyone, this week we have a what is known as a breather episode. It’s a break to get to know everyone more pretty much! But it was still a good time! Like wow, even the breather episodes are fascinating! Ok! Here we go!

Quick note: I discovered Claudine’s nickname is Kuro, given by Karen it sounds like, so I’ll probably use that from time to time. So Kuro=Claudine, now you know and won’t be confused when I call her that being like “who the fuck is Kuro?”. Odd her image color is orange but her nickname means black and theres no orange on her stage outfit. Eh, whatever.

Recently I decided to go ahead and watch the stage play, it was a chinese sub (I’ll link ya to it if you like, just message me) so while I couldn’t gather a ton of info I did gather some interesting shit. First off, the stage play story and the anime story are quite different from each other as far as I could tell. So don’t worry too much about spoilers, the show is very quick and compressed pacing wise for example. Ok so first off, remember the mystery names in the cast list on the bottom of the fan translated website? In the stage show there are three teachers overseeing the fights, I only know one of their names so the other two I’ll call Red Jacket and Yellow Sweater.

Red Jacket seems to be a gym teacher of sorts, Yellow Sweater is a music teacher. Yellow Sweater dislikes the fights right away while Red Jacket gradually gets more and more uncomfortable with the kids fighting. The third teacher is the most important one, she’s in charge (might be the headmaster of the school) and orchestrating the whole thing. Her name is Souda Haseda, the girls call her “Souda-sensei”, and I really think its very likely she is going to be in the anime. So we are probably gonna get a face to the system! Good, this will be exciting!

Second thing here, in the stage version it seems like the audition duels magically jack up the girl’s aggression and worst possible traits A LOT. This way they fight each other and its, wild. You can break out of the influences but man does it hit hard! Examples being Maya being really bloodthirsty (my curiosity of the play started cause I saw a screenshot of her stabbing Claudine, don’t worry Claudine is fine its not really mentioned or has consequences as far as I can tell), Nana’s aggression is fuckin nuts, and Hikari starts taunting her opponents and during a fight with Mahiru she knocks Mahiru the fuck out! Like holyyy shit Hikari!

And they snap out of this blinding rage when the duel ends but the winners go right back into it once their next duel starts. Like when Maya beats Kuro she isn’t happy, no. She’s upset and has this look on her face that says “I won but at what cost?”. And then the next fight she’s right back into stabby time. I’m not describing everything cause you could see it for yourself but wow man. I actually don’t think any of this stuff about the auditions will be true in the anime but I think the underground stage is probably set up to egg everyone on into wanting to fight each other. Yikes.

-The word Kirin was used in the musical, and I think it was referring to the mythical animal. I’m thinking I’m right about my theory of what Giraffe is! But there's still a lingering question, if Kirins are supposed to be beings of good luck and fortune why is there one associated with a game of misery and conflict? Hm. The mystery continues.

--Also btw, I tried to see if Souda-sensei’s name meant anything but I couldn’t get anything to make any sense. All I know is her name involves running and feathers and maybe camels and gauze or something silky? I got running away/escaping, going fast. Idk, it’s this 走駝紗羽 (and I’m pretty positive her name is written this way) if anyone wants to give it a go themselves. I’m not an expert at all so maybe you’ll find something I missed.

Alrighty that’s all I gotta say on the play! Glad I watched it, still don’t know what’s gonna happen in the anime tho lol. Yay surprises!

The episode starts with baby! Hikari and Karen watching the Starlight play. The roles are filled by all the girls doing a repeat of the stairs from episode one. Teen! Hikari and Karen are playing the two goddesses, just like we saw Maya and Claudine do in the flashback last episode. The pink star shines brightly as it did last time we saw this play.

Y’ALL I ALREADY WARNED YOU ABOUT THOSE STAIRS!

After Hikari and Karen’s characters reach for the star, they are each on a raised platform. And then, THEN THE STAR BLASTS KAREN’S CHARACTER IN THE FACE AND SHE DIES. Yeah. Anyways Karen’s platform goes down while Hikari’s goes up and sand rains down from the sky onto Hikari’s character who is crying. Notably the tower that held the star is empty.

Twinkle twinkle little star, IT WILL UNLEASH THE WRATH OF GOD!

Now we are in the present, its the next day. Karen wakes up and notices Hikari isn’t there. So she proceeds to run around the dorm barging into all the rooms looking for Hikari. She wakes up Nana and Junna, looks around the bathing room while Maya is there, and startles Claudine into speaking French while she was looking at photos of Maya dancing on her tablet….Which is for researching Maya’s dancing of course, and for no other reason even though she hides her tablet screen so Karen can’t see the photos. Research purposes only!

After this show is done I might do a best screenshot compilation post. This will be one of them, it’s priceless.

We then go to the living room where we find out Karen woke up Futaba and Kaoruko and the two are on the couch looking very sleepy. Everyone else is also there and being like “God dammit Karen, she’s been doing this all morning!”. Karen runs into the living room, sad she didn’t find Hikari anywhere in the dorm. Nana asks if Karen tried calling her and Karen is like oooh yeah phones are a thing. She thanks Nana by combining her nickname with the word nice getting the amazing phrase “Bana-nice” and floofing Nana’s pigtails. Nana likes this. 

Karen calls Hikari and asks where the fuck she is, Hikari doesn’t say anything but Karen can hear a train station and is like “wtf are you off campus?! You need a notice! Curfew is at 6!” but Hikari hangs up. Karen decides to go and find her. All the girls (including sleepy Kaoruko draped over her gf like a sloth) follow Karen to the door. Futaba is like uh are you gonna get a notice? Junna reminds Karen it's her turn to clean the hallways. Karen is like, sorry I gotta go find Hikari! Karen runs to the train station but no Hikari. She sends Hikari a text and Hikari response with the best emote known to man. And no translation needed honestly.

Hikari won’t hesitate bitch!

Eventually Hikari sends a picture of herself in front of a, blurry blob. Karen guesses a rock climbing wall, its wrong. Karen runs around and asks a little girl what she think it is and the girl thinks its jellyfish. Karen runs to a aquarium, its the wrong one. Hikari sends another jellyfish picture and Karen races out to the train. Btw Hikari has her roller suitcase with her the entire time. Anyways, Hikari is in another aquarium but Karen is tired so she sits in a train station. Hikari then finally texts words instead of jellyfish photos, she asks why did you lose. Karen replies saying that Maya and her aren’t on the same stage (as in she means Maya is much stronger than her), if you could even call it a stage that is. Hikari calls her an idiot. Karen then asks well what should she have done then?! Hikari responses with, I don’t know. She wonders what should they do. Karen decides to call her and this time Hikari picks up and responds! She asks if Karen remembers “their Starlight”.

Back on campus, Futaba and Kaoruko are chilling in a training room. Kaoruko complains about having to wear school uniforms/school wear while in the school building. She then brings up the audition duels, she is surprised Futaba is in them and didn’t talk to her about doing that. She wonders if the prize of being Top Star is real. Kaoruko says “aw man that means we gotta fight one day, but you’ll let me win right?”, Futaba doesn’t give an answer. Instead she slides Kaoruko off of her lap. This is fine. Just fine.

Anywho Kaoruko is then like, I got an idea! She starts skipping towards the teacher’s office with Futaba right behind her. Yeah she’s gonna go tattle on Karen and Hikari being off campus without permission cause then less rivals for Top Star, don’t ever trust the sleepy ones you guys. Luckily Mahiru stops them in their tracks saying she’s the goddess of the hallway while pointing with and spinning her baton. Mahiru says she senses wicked intent from them, and figures out Kaoruko’s plan right away and does a great impression of her. Kaoruko tries to be like “uhhh no we weren't gonna. Do anything like that.” Mahiru then aggressively spins her baton at them until they run away. Mahiru then dramatically laments that she’s jealous that Karen was chasing Hikari and not her.

ALL HAIL THE HALLWAY GODDESS! PROTECTOR OF THE IDIOTS!

Back with Karen and Hikari, Karen is like ofc I remember our promise! Then the two have a long much needed catching up talk while they individually wander around Tokyo for the rest of the day. Eventually Karen talks about how much she loves the stage and wants to go even higher, hence she’ll keep doing the audition duels. Finally, at night, the two meet in person at the lit up Tokyo Tower.

Meanwhile, we go to Claudine practicing dance. She’s been doing so for awhile. Maya then comes the fuck in and asks if she wanted to dance with her. They turn on sweet jazzy music and they dance. Maya comments that Claudine seems all psyched up again and Claudine says that Maya tends to fire her up and Maya is like “orly? Cool” (Maya don’t be coy you already knew that). Claudine asks “So, why the hell are you even IN the auditions in the first place? It’s not like you need em, you’re already take center stage with everything!” Maya playfully says she gets jealous is all. They finish their dance with Maya dipping Claudine, she says the idea of anyone having the Top Star besides herself makes her very jealous. What Maya is really saying is she wants Claudine to challenge her and try to take the Top Star, Claudine smiles and calls her greedy. Challenge accepted.

Maya is NOT subtle with her crush at all, it’s amazing. 

Back with Karen and Hikari, they try to go to the aquarium that’s under the tower but sadly its closed for maintenance. The two sit in a park nearby the tower, Karen is like “its okay we can always come together here again!” Hikari then finally talks about the audition duels. She says if you lose too many times and get booted out, you will lose the most important thing to a Stage Girl. Damn. 

Karen is like ooohh that's why you locked me in a shed, but she points out that not going to the duel meant she’d lose by default and Hikari very obviously didn’t think of that. Karen, running up a slide, is like Hikari don’t worry I won’t lose anymore! She’s gonna be shining! She will shine with Hikari! Hikari points out there's only one Top Star and Karen is like uh Giraffe never said there couldn’t be two! Not a bad point. Hikari is like dude thats not gonna happen but Karen is like let’s try anyways. Hikari is like, ok. And joins her on the top of the slide. They stand together holding hands, the tower glowing softly nearby.

They say if a couple witnesses the turning off of Tokyo Tower’s lights at night, they will stay together forever......uh. It’s still on. Uh oh.

Meanwhile at the dorms, their teacher is checking if all of them are there so the girls gotta cover for Karen and Hikari. When their teacher checks the room, Mahiru is like oh they tired so they went to bed early. Kaoruko and Futaba are being body doubles in Karen and Hikari’s bed. However because they didn’t use pillows like most kids in media do, now Kaoruko and Futaba’s room is being checked and they ain’t there. Everyone is thinking fffucck. 

So, to allow the gfs to sneak back to their room, Maya and Claudine join in to help their dumbass friends/floormates. Claudine’s brilliant idea is to stage faint and start rambling random words in French, Maya catches her and is like “oh nooo. She fainted!” the teacher runs over asking what happened and Maya says, what's most likely the first thing that popped up in her head, “She’s got, stage fright!!” I’m. You guys.

Anyways, Futaba and Kaoruko sneaked back to their room door while the teacher’s back was turned. The teacher turns around and sees them by their door. Maya very quietly asks Claudine how long she was gonna lay there rambling in French, so Claudine springs up and is like “HEY I’M FINE NOW!” The teacher is like, well alrighty then. After she leaves, Nana is like “wow i’ve never done that before….but Bana-nice!” Junna is like let’s NEVER do this again.

This goes to show. Top of the class or not, teenagers are teenagers.

The next morning, Mahiru is waiting on the stairs in front of the dorm and sleeping. She wakes up and sees Karen and Hikari walking towards the dorm. She’s like YAY THEY’RE BACK! Junna and Nana come outside while everyone else looks out their windows. Junna is like “WTF What were you two thinking?!” Turns out they ran out of money so they couldn’t take the train back, oops. Karen is like, it’s cool we got back at 6. Junna groans and is like 6PM not AM! Junna scolds them and Nana says Junna did Karen’s cleaning duties for her, Junna blushes. Karen gets emotional, apologizes, and hugs Junna, much to Mahiru’s dismay. 

Then, because these useless lesbians were outside shouting about covering for Karen and Hikari, the teacher rides by on her bike and is like Karen and Hikari come to the office later and bring all those who covered for you too. Yeah she found out, oops. She says they will get “the legendary punishment” and rides away. Junna is like fffffffffuck I’ve heard horrible things about that! Rumor has it that it has caused students to leave the school all together! Karen is like, fuck. Uh, it’s fine! We’re all in this together. Junna is dying squirtle. 

But, she says she’s glad they are safe. Then all the girls tell them “Welcome back”! Hikari is obviously touched by this. The girls go back inside for breakfast. Hikari puts her new stuffed jellyfish next to her bear and the episode ends with the ending theme being sung by both Hikari and Karen.

Let’s face it, getting the jellyfish alone was worth going out for!

-Odd to mention now I know, but I love how they draw bangs in the show! They so flippy and cute!

-Also fun fact, the white bear Hikari has everywhere is an in universe mascot character called Mr. White. Hikari loves this mascot so much its on her stage uniform!

-So Hikari straight up leaves the dorms this episode and I think the reason is this, she realized Karen only auditioned cause she was there. If she wasn’t there Karen would’ve never auditioned, so her quest was doomed from the get go. So she leaves hoping Karen would now stop dueling since she isn’t there. But what Hikari underestimated was how much Karen cares about her, she didn’t expect Karen to call her or go looking for her. Hikari at this point is at a loss of what to do, the reason why she came in the first place was a failure. Hence she wanders looking at jellyfish, avoiding Karen since she didn’t want to admit how she felt and that she fucked up. But Karen got it out of her via texting and they finally spoke extensively to each other. This was a good step for them! Looks like Karen convinced Hikari, for the time being, of getting Top Star together!

But is it really such a good idea?...Dunno yet.

-I love that sleepy Kaoruko just drapes herself onto Futaba like Futaba is a big old pillow and she is a sleepy sloth. Very cute girlfriends. Though, there was very strong foreshadowing here that their relationship will be strained thanks to the duels. Futaba isn’t going to just let her win, her silence after Kaoruko asks her that just proves it. Good luck dear lesbians.

-I can’t believe Claudine “I keep photos of Maya dancing on my tablet just for observing her dancing and not because I think she’s hot or anything. JUST FOR RESEARCH PURPOSES!” Saijo is fucking canon. I made a joke of that nature in my last post but then this really happened! I’m SO pleased. Also Karen startled her so much she reverts to speaking French lol. Kuro is the living embodiment of the “600 photos fly out of pockets” meme I swear. I really like her, she’s great!

-Nana’s reaction to Karen fluffing her pigtails was very cute. She is very cute.

-Junna with her hair down is very cute yes but oh man this screenshot of her being startled awake is the funniest fucking thing oh my god. I can’t decide if she was dreaming of titty or if she was ready scratch the face off of whoever came into her room lol.

-I love how comfortable the 8 girls are with each other? Like not all of them are best friends or anything they are just used to living with each other, I assume they’ve been living with each other since their 1st year. And yeah you just kinda get used to any weird shit your floor mates do. We got a good look at that this episode. Karen is running around looking for Hikari and she’s comfortable with everyone enough to barge into people’s rooms and any other room and be like “HAVEYOUSEENHIKARIISSHEINHERE?!”. Also it is funny seeing Karen burst into every room in the dorm like that. She even startled Maya lol. Karen pls.

It kinda gives me flashbacks to when I was in theater and summer camp lol, er not the running into the bathroom while someone was there part tho.

--Also Karen, why do you keep looking under places that Hikari can’t possibly fit or hide in? Unless Hikari is a cat, if she can get her head through she can get in. Maybe, she is a cat. *X Files music*.

-Being Mahiru is still suffering. Like damn it’s suffering! Karen didn’t even really talk to her getting back from the big city. She looks so sad when Karen hugs Junna and not her. OUCH. Currently I’m putting my bets on us losing Mahiru first, she’s the odd man out and that would hurt Karen greatly and up the stakes a lot. Either way it’s only a matter of time b4 she mcfreakin loses it now, and judging by some episode five screenshot teaser that might come soon. SPEAKING OF WHICH!

--THIS. OK. WHAT. IS. THAT. WHITE. THING?! IT HAS AN EYE?! AAAAA?! Is it a prop?! Is it real?! Is it a lovecraftian horror?! What?! Whatcha got in store for us episode 5?! I’m excited and scared at the same time.

-What’s very interesting is that Karen wasn’t sleepy or tired this episode even though it’s post duel. I’m thinking her drive to find Hikari overrode everything else, amazing. The power of gay love!

-When Claudine suddenly dropped to the ground, for a hot second I was like WHAT IS SHE OK but then I realized it was a distraction. Shout out to Maya for just going with it, catching her and everything. Also well well Kuro it looks like you trust Maya enough to catch ya when you stage faint. :3c 

Anywho what cracked me up the most was how slapped together their distraction was, like you guys you’ve been actresses for awhile now and this is the best you can do? Guess they aren’t one for improv lol. I’m honestly glad it went this dumb cause it goes to show that even the top students are still teens, covering for their idiot friends/floormates. I am also happy they took part in this hairbrained scheme, I’ll say more about this later.

-Hikari says when you get booted out of the duels you “lose the most important thing to a stage girl”. Well that’s really vague Hikari. Either she is still withholding information OR that is all she knows. I got the impression in the stage play she was Souda-sensei’s spy/agent to get people to fight, can’t say if that’s true here though.

-Kaoruko omg. I knew she had a secret mean streak but wowww. The good news is she isn’t very sneaky about it, nor is her girlfriend, so Mahiru easily stopped that shit in its track. I still love her though, Sailor Neptune's spirit lives on and is as passive aggressive as ever!

-The Venus de Milo statue didn’t pop up this episode, but that’s likely cause we weren’t on campus very much this time. The pink light was still everywhere like usual though. Also we learned the school has free practice days! That’s neat.

-Hey Maya, I don’t think saying ominous things about the audition duels while dancing is how you flirt with a girl. Granted it looks like it worked? Weirdos. And I told ya guys, Maya really loves dancing with her. She went out her way to do so this episode! Also good to know Maya always smiles at her when they dance even if no one else is watching so her smiling isn’t performative. And man, I’ve noticed Maya seeks out Kuro and only Kuro instead of hanging out with anyone else. That girl has got it bad. 

--Maya hun, did you learn all your flirting tactics from the theater? I think she did, amazing.

-Honestly I’m loving Kuro and Maya’s dynamic more and more each episode, they are actually really adorable? Kuro is in deep denial while Maya is like “That’s ok, take your time. :)”. In the meantime she’s here to impress and think “She’s so pretty when she fights and when she dances and when she-” and so on and so forth. 

However like with everyone else’s relationships, their relationship is going to end up strained thanks to the audition duels. Right now, Maya very firmly believes that being a Top Star means being alone. Throwing everything and everyone away, no matter what. But that begs the question, how will she handle it when it’s Kuro’s time to get booted (I think Maya and Karen will be the last ones standing)? I don’t mean just losing, being kicked out of the duels all together.

If my theory on radiance aka ability to perform on the stage is the thing taken is correct, than that means Maya can’t dance with her or see her fiery passion for the theater anymore after she’s kicked out. When that time comes, will she really be ok with leaving Kuro with nothing and standing alone? Ha ha, what if Maya knows they have limited time together so she’s trying to have as much time as she can? Ahaha...oh I just made myself sad.

-Speaking of Maya and Kuro, those two are a lot different than I expected. Way nicer and for sure not so above it all. They are just teenagers like the rest of them. I really love how different Maya is off the stage, when fighting/on stage she is very intimidating and seems all powerful. But when not she is, very respected and talented yes, but she is just another girl in their class. Maya isn’t an asshole to her classmates like you’d expect most characters like her to do, and like I said she obviously enjoys dancing with Kuro even though they are rivals.

Kuro on the other hand could’ve been like your average rich bitch character but nope! She's actually very chill and playful with everyone not named Tendou Maya, hell she even has a nickname, all of her intensity goes towards Maya instead. And ofc her deep denial about how she feels about Maya. It's very fascinating and I love it, I love them. They could’ve easily been the stock popular snobs/jerks but they aren’t, they are much deeper than that. And that’s wonderful!

-How odd that Claudine is asking Maya why she’s even in the underground duels and says that Maya “doesn’t need them”. So does that mean these fights are for girls who are desperate to get to the top and feel there’s no other way? If so, then why is Maya there? Maya herself doesn’t give an actual answer. Hm.

-The curfew for the dorms is 6pm apparently but the duels obviously go way past that time and into the night. So there’s at least two possibilities here. One, the school is very much in on it so the curfew is null and void for the girls who fight that night. Or two, the dueling does indeed take place in a dream world or dreamlike world. The question is when do the girls enter it? How does the elevator work then? Do their real bodies go with them? Are they just teleported back into their beds afterwards? Or a mix of both, school is in on it and there’s some magic shit going on? Like the school knows but the audition duels are in a dreamlike place is what I mean. HM. There is so much we don’t know about the duels honestly. What are they hiding? And, how much do the Stage Girls really know?

--I’m thinking that it’s likely the duels are taking place in a dreamlike world, that would line up with Karen waking up in bed after them and line up with the girls being tired the next day. However I must point out that even if the audition duels do take place in a dreamlike world, it doesn’t make it less real. No the experience is very real it just takes place in a dreamlike reality (think like in the movies Inception or Paprika). The Stage Girls remember the duels and no these aren’t just normal auditions, we have zero evidence suggesting that still so I’d say get that idea outta yo head. 

I’m also thinking any wounds or hell even dying would all be temporary, like you’d wake up and you are fine physically. However emotionally not so much, you’d remember the experience of either dying or killing someone and that will probably fuck you up a bit, shit. And I think there is a way to die but it maybe only the Revue itself can do that. I’m guessing losing will really scramble your brain in some way. Oh dear.

-We see more of the Starlight play, so the summary I got right now for the plot of this play is this. Once upon a time there were two goddesses, they loved each other very much. But they both wanted to reach for a light high up in the sky, a star. So together they leave their nymphs friends (Idk are they nymphs or what) behind, and they go to the star. Both goddesses reach for the star but, the star fired a laser beam and shot one of the goddesses out of the sky. The other was being pulled into the star, unable to go back for her lover. So she turned her into sand to spare her a horrible death. They were forever separated, their dream could never come true. The End! Soooo this foreshadowing makes me nervous for the girls, I’ll talk about it more in the speculation part.

--Quick note here, I learned that the names of the two goddesses in the play are Claire and Flora. Now Flora is a latin name that means flower and is the name of the Roman goddess of flowers and plants. Interestingly, the school’s symbol is a flower! Or looks like one to me at least. Claire is also a latin name and it means bright, clear, and….famous. Hm, I think I’m gonna assume Claire is the goddess who didn’t die. Could be wrong though.

-So is the legendary punishment legit or was their teacher just fucking with them? I suspect if it is, and if we see it, the punishment isn’t as bad as it’s rumored to be. If it is, maybe it's like the stage play. In the stage play, because Karen was late to class too many times I think, the girls got thrown into the fighty Greek Chorus hell pit. Most of them without weapons, at least Maya and Kuro went for using their bare hands instead. Wow. Death by greek chorus, what a way to go.

-I’m thinking that starlight equals radiance aka talent. The starlight gatherers thing I pointed out last week would match up to this idea.

-The penalty of losing too much in the auditions is that something important to Stage Girls is lost. I strongly think what they lose is their radiance aka starlight. Basically all their abilities they can use to perform. Maybe even weakening their bodies? My current thought for the truth about being Top Star is that Top Star is given all the radiance of the girls who lost, maybe used as a battery by the tiara but even just being given all the radiance is painful too. You’d be alone at the top, all your friends are gone and you’ve literally taken away everything they had. Basically the winner doesn’t even win, the only winner is the cruel system. 

So I got two ideas of where this could go, one is that the girls who lose become shells of their former selves after losing their starlight. Blank eyes, not very active, that kind of thing. And maybe the effect can be resisted for a little while but it will come for you in the end. And maybe it could even cause you to fade away into nothing but pink light....which is all over this anime. UM. OH GEEZ.

The other idea is that, the stage literally steals you away. If the idea is to give all the radiance at once to whoever the Top Star is, storing the losing girls would work too. Like the stage basically catches the losing girl, drags her under or upward (or even stage left or right) and then the girl is put in a deep sleep pretty much. They sleep in coffins or boxes until there is a Top Star, then they will be taken out and drained. This could be a good way for the school to not have to deal with zombie like girls, they can just say they are sick. Not like the other Stage Girls can tell anyone otherwise. What happens afterwards can’t say I know really. Could go with them fake joining the Starlight group like in my theory. Or they just bury whats left of the girls under the stage. Shit.

-Heres a theory that came to me while I was watching the stage version, the Starlight story isn’t made up. The myth is real. The goddess that lived is among them, maybe as the head teacher Souda-sensei? That would explain all the goddess symbolism, specially love goddesses because this one lost her lover and so did Inanna and Venus. It might also explain our Qilin, he is loyal to her. 

So if the goddess is real why is she here? Well, I think she did indeed take the star and stored it away. However, this goddess has become cruel. She had seen other women with their best friends and their lovers and became angry. Why do they get to keep who they love the most and she had to lose hers? So maybe this is a recreation, she might just be a goddess who loves theater and sees it as a good way to lure girls. She puts the same number of girls as there were goddesses or goddesses and their nymphs idk. They fight for the Top Star, fighting friends and lovers alike. And the girl that wins gains the star powers, but now she’s alone and she lost everything else. Just like the goddess herself, another lonely star.

This was a nice breather episode! Got to hang with the girls more, got some more foreshadowing, got some more gay, it was fun! And it gave the animators a break! It looks like episode 5 is gonna be a doozy though, oh boy.
