My Experience at a 4 Week Summer School

Arkansas Governor’s School is a 4 week summer program where the 400 most gifted and talented students meet to discuss the future of the worlds’ current mindset while also gaining new insight from experienced college professors and top high school teachers. The daily schedule is divided into three areas: Area I, an assigned class focused on one specific education (i.e. English, math, social science, natural science, instrumental music, etc.), area II, a philosophy based course focused on critical thinking skills, and area III, the class where we used the critical thinking techniques from area II to apply them to the social issues of today, such as racism, school shootings, climate change, etc. In order to become a student of AGS, one must fill out the simple application process which includes the following: an essay regarding the provided prompt, 2 recommendation letters, a list of achievements/accomplishments in high school, a writing assignment about your reasoning for choosing your desired area I subject, and another essay about why you want to attend AGS. After completing all required materials in the admission process, you then wait until you receive an email granting your secured spot in attending AGS. Receiving that specific email was a step towards the road of change, and I was completely unaware.

Now, let me post a slight disclaimer: I might use the same type of wording in order to express how AGS went for me, but I simply cannot help it. I will not over hype nor will I under exaggerate the experience as a whole. I will speak of my time, what I did, who I met, and how I felt. Let us begin.

First, I wrote in a black leather bound journal every day. I titled each day “AGS Day -- July --” in order to keep my days straight because I honestly did not ever have an idea of what day it was, or what time it was. The first two weeks we were not allowed to have our phones and it was one of the most refreshing times, mentally. I was glad I never knew what time it was; I was going through each day with no worry. I never had a thought about who I need to text, what other people were up to, or what was happening in the news. Having met so many new, different people at one time without having my cellphone was an oasis for my mind. I could openly connect with other different ways of thinking, which overall affected me in a positive way because I forced myself to listen purely- not listen to speak. By speaking less and observing more, I was able to do so much more. For me, it was writing. Now, the writing in this journal was not for feelings and “he loves me, he loves me not” ideas, it was simply to physically document everything that happened that day because if I did not, I would forget them. Time shows no mercy for our memories, and I wanted to make sure that they lived forever.

Secondly, I took notes on EVERYTHING. When lectures occurred at 4:00pm and 6:00pm, I would go to as many as I could and gain as much knowledge as I could. With that, I now have many pages filled in my journal and many other notebooks of what experienced professors had to say. The topics ranged from food psychology to life beyond Earth, the ending of a story to the psychology of self talk in sports, and the debate between science and god to the dissection of short films. If you can think it, there was a lecture on it. Of course I did not want to forget any of those talks either, especially when they were delivering valuable information that is not even mentioned in high school, so I documented the ones that were most interesting to me. The memories of knowledge can be refreshed.

Next, one of the most impactful habits I began was writing down questions. Whenever I started to read philosophy about a year ago, I developed a new, open way of thinking. With this new way of thinking, I started to have more and more questions about everything, which eventually led me to discover the psychological side of it in philosophy via research papers. However, I never thought about writing these down because I thought they were ridiculous or other people would quickly dismiss them; but, as soon as I sat through the first day of area II realizing I had already written down a full page of questions, I knew I needed to continue this practice. Luckily, I met a few very impactful people that allowed me to ask these questions and actually nurtured the methodology I had. 

With that, I prepare for the most important part of my AGS experience: the professors.

I met approximately 5 people that influenced me in the greatest of ways. The first one is a satirical, yet highly intelligent English professor that taught my afternoon area I class, English. He was the first person that noticed my reading of philosophy and became ecstatic at the idea of a student my age reading these works this early. I continued to converse with him occasionally after class and during lunch, where he introduced me to the process of acquiring a PhD in English, and English in college as a whole. He gave me many book titles, notes he took in college, and most importantly a confidence in sharing my ideas. Unfortunately, in my English area I class specifically, I encountered many roadblocks regarding peoples’ way of thinking that forced me to refrain from expressing my ideas/logic. This professor however witnessed I was occurring this phenomenon and later wrote to me that my ideas need to be spread. Since we are on the topic of English professors, there was another mentor that encouraged me to do more creative writing. This old fellow was a master of poetry, but somehow adored my work and pursued me to write a novel after reading one of my pieces. He also endorsed my reading of philosophy, and will also stay in touch post AGS. The instrumental music teacher and I became great friends after attending one of his many Jazz classes. He was a quirky professor of jazz that truly represented the epitome of what a musician is. You could see his love for music in his performing, and I respect and praise that from a student perspective, being a musician myself. He noticed how much I supported my fellow musicians and loved the idea of me doing so. He inspired me to keep smiling as much as I do, and that simple gesture stuck with me. No one has ever told me to continue ‘being happy’, they only question why I do smile. Coming from an older, loving musician, it meant a lot to me. I also met with a library technician that informed me on the world of publishing and writing for the public. She gave me tremendous advice that will help me as soon as I begin writing research articles in college, and I am forever grateful for her insight. Finally, there is one professor that influenced me the greatest. He is an optimistic psychologist that taught my area II class of philosophy/critical thinking. After talking to him several times post class, it gradually became a regular thing after lectures and movies, and even during dinner or lunch. After one  specific talk, he helped me gain traction on what my career goals were. He introduced me to psychology, which I had never even thought about before, and unconsciously opened this academic door that will help me as I complete my final year of college and begin my long journey of becoming an academic. Each conversation posed new questions I immediately needed to document or write about later, and it all eventually led to my reading list reach an unfathomable amount. He nurtured my constant need of questions, unlike other teachers that quickly dismiss them to junk since I am still a teenager, which means it is irrational for me to ask such questions even though they themselves cannot likely define what irrationality is. I cannot praise in written word anymore how impactful this professor was. I will forever be in his debt.

The best part of AGS was the professors because they volunteered to work with these 400 kids. They helped shape me into me. They helped guide me into the right area of assessing who I am and what do I know, and who are the others and what do they know. The atmosphere they created was unlike any other; it was comforting, yet challenging, welcoming, but serious. Even in just the small time I had with these mentors, I believed I could trust them with any thought I had. In some ways, it felt as if they were trying to figure me out, which made the camp even more entertaining. They welcomed my thoughts and ideas with open arms which allowed me to grow exponentially. 

Because of this whole experience, I resulted in developing particular habits that might not make much sense to many people but I know it makes sense to these mentors and fellow students of the camp.

1) Every time I have a memory, flashback, dream, nightmare, vision, or daydream, I write it down. I came to the conclusion that if I do not write down these events then I will forget them, and I need them to use as inspiration.

2) When I have a question, I write it down as well. I hope in the future I can answer some of them, but not all of them.

3) I read some type of research paper and/or listen to a podcast related to my future field of study.

4) I take a heavy amount of notes on everything I hear/read. I did not realize until after this camp how much I enjoy taking notes, especially when it is just verbal, so I have to exercise my comprehension skills. I also, depending on the importance of the talk, will record certain lectures given it is relevant information that I need later on.

Alongside these habits I also developed lasting friendships with fellow students all across the state. Our wavelengths are compatible, which presents positive signs for a lasting relationship with one another. I know I will see them in the near future. 

I will never forget this meta strophic event that planted itself in my teenage years, and I hope my search for the same atmosphere I was in for 4 weeks is successful.

Episode Nine – Girl Meets Written in the Stars

Midterms were over, Riley had submitted her story for her writing class the week before and the weekend had been spent recovering from overworking herself. She talked with Josh on the phone after he had gotten out of the hospital, well more like she yelled at him for doing the same thing she did. They were the same, growing up at least before she met Maya, they had always done everything together. So of course, they developed the same bad habits over time. Maya had stayed in the city taking a few extra days with her family and Josh, while Riley stayed at school because Josh had told her to get some rest after hearing about the incident with the guy outside of Lucas’s class.

“You need to sleep Riley,” he had told her before saying goodbye. She missed her family, even when they visited it wasn’t enough most days, but she knew that she was working towards something that mattered.

Now she sat in her writing class, Zay and Charlie next to her talking about their grades on their writing projects, both of them had gotten B’s on them and told that they should work on the stories a little longer and develop them further. Riley’s grade had been a C, with no explanation as to why the grade had been that. She stared at the grade remembering freshman year of high school and the infamous D that she had gotten in Spanish class. She was waiting until everyone was done speaking with the professor, she wanted to know why she had gotten that grade, but just as she was standing up the professor had walked out of the room without a word to her.

“Riles,” Zay said looking at her, she knew he was worried about her, they were friends so worrying was normal. He looked down at her paper and saw the grade before looking back up at her.

“I’ll be fine,” she said the memory of the D fresh in her mind. “I’ll be just fine,” she finished before taking her bag and walking out of the room, leaving Zay and Charlie behind looking after her.

“I don’t understand,” Charlie said once they had started to follow her. “Her story was a hundred times better than either one of ours.”

Zay nodded his head but all he could think about was the sad look in Riley’s eyes, “Our first year of high school Riley got a D in one of her classes, and it consumed her, made her think that she wasn’t as good of a student as she had once thought she had been.”

“But I know that’s a lie, she’s a great student,” Charlie said to him as the made it across the quad on the way towards the dining hall they always ate at after class.

“Of course, she is but sometimes, well sometimes she doesn’t click with a teacher and I think that’s what hurts her the most because her father is a teacher and she grew up with teachers all around her so the fact that she doesn’t click with one is really hard on her.”

“That’s sounds kind of sad when you think about it, she always wants to live up to these great people but when she stumbles it hits her the hardest, but it still doesn’t make sense, her story was the best one in the class everyone else said so, why would the professor give her that grade.”

Zay shrugged his shoulders, “I don’t know, but I think we should help Riley no matter what,” he said thinking about how much she has helped him over the years.

Zay kept a close eye on Riley, he saw how her face changed from the sad puppy eyes she would get when she didn’t live up to something, to that determined fierce person who was bound to fix her own problems. Instead of waiting for her permission he pulled up a copy of her story and with the help of Charlie and Sam, they found a writing contest that was being held by the school and submitted Riley’s story into the competition. They also watched as she wrote everything she was feeling into a notebook, he remembered how she had written articles during the last two years of high school. The same articles that had helped so many people, including himself, so he knew that she was going to be alright. She was the strongest person he knew, and she was also the one person who could be hurt the most but the smallest things. Even after everything he had put her through over the last few months she never backed away from him, she stayed close and made sure that he was alright, so he had to do the same for her, because that’s what friends do for one another.

In the days since she received her grade, Riley had tried to talk to her professor, who was ignoring her both in class and through emails. It wasn’t right, but after talking to some of his former students she had found out that he does this with those who show the most promise just to see how they would react. It was mean and cruel and she hated the fact that he did it, but she couldn’t figure out why he wouldn’t allow a meeting. Instead of going back to talk to him she concentrated on the story she had to submit before thanksgiving break. The first story she had given them had been about a group of wolves traveling down a mountain pass, she had read about it once and thought it was an interesting concept. So she wrote a story about it for her project, but for some reason it wasn’t her best according to the professor.

“Don’t dwell on it too much Riley,” Lucas said as he rubbed her back. “You need to relax a little, and then focus on your next project.”

“But it’s just so… so… it’s infuriating to me,” she said jumping off her bed before she started pacing back and forth in her room. “Why would he do that if he thought a student had promise? That sound ridiculous, and then to ignore me outright instead of speaking to me.”

“Well they did tell us that college was different,” he said before standing up and moving in her path. Taking her face in his hands, “Just be yourself Riley,” he said before kissing her on her forehead. “You’re going to outshine everyone.”

“Okay,” she said to him as she attempted to relax even for a moment, but she still felt tense, she was afraid of what this meant for her final grade in the class. She enjoyed being there, the creativity was a good outlet for her but the feeling that she had done something wrong just didn’t feel right with her. Lucas held her close, it was the only thing she knew he could do, because once she was in her own headspace, her mind went into overload and she over thought every little thing.

“What did Señora Feinstein-Chang tell you freshman year that made you work harder?”

“That it wasn’t this grade that mattered but the next one because that showed her where I wanted to go.”

“That still applies here Riles, so just make your next assignment the one that matters,” he said before pulling away from her.

She gave him the biggest smile she could, because he was right, the next assignment is what mattered. “Okay,” she said to him as she pulled him back towards the bed. “For now, let’s watch a movie, you’re right I might be too stressed out about this.”

“There’s my girl,” he said with a smile. “And don’t worry, you’re meant to do great things, hell you’ve done great things Riles, but your future is so bright you can light up the sky with it.”

She couldn’t help but feel loved by his words, “Our futures are bright,” she said to him before they started watching a movie on her laptop.

In the days since her talk with Lucas, Riley felt lighter, she went to class and decided against going after her professor for her grade, instead concentrating on her next short story. Zay smiled at her in class before nudging Charlie, she wasn’t sure why the two of them were so happy but it didn’t matter. Zay was really smiling after having such a rough time the last few months, which only made her want to keep him happy. She wanted everyone to be happy, so she worked on her papers, on her stories. They had lunch like they usually did, never really deviating from their weekly schedules unless they wanted to see a movie. It became her new normal, until the week before thanksgiving break when her professor pulled her aside, reminding her of all of those times that he had ignored her. But she didn’t lash out.

“Ms. Matthews,” he said smiling at her. “I wondered when you stopped being persistent about your midterm grade that you had given up like so many other students, but you surprised me.”

“Well there’s no point in dwelling on one grade, when the next one is more important,” she said to him as the classroom emptied out behind her. “I was told once that it was the next grade that really matters because it shows you where I want to go.”

“That’s a good philosophy, kind of sounds like something someone I know would say,” he said with a smile. “I didn’t give you a C on your midterm, I gave you an A, but I wanted you to continue to work hard because you showed the most promise from all of my students.”

“So, you gave me a false grade just to force me to reevaluate myself, well sir, that’s cruel and hurtful.”

“Yes, I know that, I’ve been yelled at by several people about it over the last few weeks, some of which were your friends, another was my sister, who I found out was your teacher in high school,” he sighed and Riley really wasn’t sure where he was headed with this, and honestly, she didn’t really care. “You see, I’ve had students over the years who show promise on their first story only to fall behind afterwards. Their heads get too big thinking that they’re something big, but in the end, they question my methods when their final grade is below what they expected.”

“I don’t understand what that has to do with my midterm grade.”

“I did this as a test to you, as I have done to others over the last two years, some rise above it and create works that outshine what they’ve created, while others give up. You were persistent at first and then you decided that you needed to work on rising above it. So, I’m telling you now, as an apology, because I’ve been asked to judge your story for the writing competition, and I didn’t want you to get the wrong idea.”

Riley’s brain took a moment to register what he was talking about, she hadn’t entered a writing competition, and she wasn’t sure how he had gotten an entry from her. Before she could say anything Zay and Charlie walked up next to her and pulled her out of the room.

“See you next week sir,” Zay said smiling, but Riley wanted to go back into the room and ask what he was talking about.

“Bye Professor,” Charlie said before the three of them left and walked out of the building.

“What is going on,” she asked them when they were half way through campus forcing the two of them to stop. “Out with it.”

“Well after what had happened, we talked to Sam and kind of devised a plan,” Charlie said trying to look innocent. “It was mostly Zay’s idea anyway.”

“What to throw me under the bus man,” Zay said before pushing Charlie away. “Yeah, I had the idea to submit your story to the competition, it was really good and I hated the look on your face, plus I thought that the professor was wrong.”

“And we’ve been meaning to tell you, but you got all happy after the second class that week,” Charlie added as he rubbed his hands to keep them from getting cold.

“Lucas told me that he had helped calm you down by reminding you of how you got over what happened freshman year, so we put off telling you,” Zay said as he ran a hand through his hair before putting his hat back on. “We didn’t know you were going to find out this way, sorry.”

Riley smiled at the two of them before throwing her arms around their shoulders. “You guys are the best you know that,” she said as she squeezed them together. “Thank you,” she said with a smile.

Before she could pull away she felt someone’s body slam into her, “Yay for hugs,” Sam said before they were joined by Lucas.

It would have been weird for anyone to see the five of them hugging it out on the quad, but Riley didn’t care what others thought because she had good friends who wanted her to be happy.

“Not that I mind but why are we hugging,” Sam said after a moment had passed.

“We told Riley about the writing competition,” Charlie answered before Riley started pulling away. The smile still firmly planted on her face.

“Oh yay, I’ve been waiting for this moment, because I’m terrible at keeping secrets,” Sam said before putting her arms around Riley and Charlie.

Lucas smiled at them, Zay laughed, and Charlie patted Sam on the head before they separated. This was something good, for all of them, friendships were important, especially when so much was happening. She couldn’t wait to share it all with Maya, Smackle and Farkle, when they saw one another next. For now she was going to savor the moment.

‘I was that kid who was hustling from an early age and had my first “business” at 14,’ says Cassie Byrnes. She even had a ‘very short-lived but very lucrative’ eBay business selling vintage clothes in the early days of online marketplaces.

A fascination with vintage fashion prints spurred Cassie to make the move from Brisbane to Melbourne in 2012 to study Textile Design at RMIT – despite having never been to Victoria before! Luckily – it was the right move. She quickly fell in love with textiles, and threw herself into her studies, working like ‘a psycho’ to excel in her course. Then, in 2016, not long after graduating, Cassie launched her own brand, Variety Hour, working freelance on the side to prop up her new business.

‘The year I started my business, my parents were on the verge of bankruptcy after working incredibly hard in their small business for the past three decades,’ she says. ‘It was heartbreaking, but I also knew I was completely on my own, there was no safety net and no one to fall back on. I definitely get my resilience from them. It also taught me that just working hard does not guarantee success, and you have to remain nimble and adaptable to change.’

Today, Cassie manages a team of five people, working from their dreamy Gertrude Street studio above the Variety Hour retail store! In-between designing new ranges for Variety Hour, and managing her retail store, Cassie still regularly collaborates with with big brands, designing prints for the likes of Nike, Anthropologie and Uniqlo.

Cassie has big picture goals for the future of Variety Hour. She wants to get her team up to full-time hours, experiment with new applications like jacquard weaving and embroidery, and do more to celebrate body diversity (VH clothes now go up to size 22!). In doing all that, Cassie sees the domino effect it has on supporting local manufacturing, creativity in the textiles industry, and promoting size inclusivity among Australian women.

Imagine if every day was as colourful as this!

First Thing

I wake up around 7am to the soothing sounds of my daughter either singing or yelling from her cot – my alarm now for the past 18 months.

I pretend I am asleep long enough for my husband to get Lottie up and start breakfast, then I lie in bed contemplating my existence in the world. Eventually I accept my reality but like clockwork it’s way too late and it’s a mad rush to get out the door within 20 minutes (in case you didn’t realise I am  definitely not a morning person). Having once worked a solid decade in hospitality, I will forever be a night owl, unfortunately my daughter has still yet to receive that memo and I have to find a way to function in the mornings.

Morning

After getting into the car and breathing a sigh of relief, I turn on ABC Melbourne and listen to Virginia Trioli on my way to drop Lottie off at daycare in Fitzroy. I usually get sucked into hanging out with her adorable baby friends and chatting to the teachers before grabbing a coffee at Gabriel and making my way to the Variety Hour office, just around the corner on Gertrude Street.

The morning is a whirlwind of emails and planning out the day. I am a meticulous planner (because I am also a meticulous procrastinator) and have forced myself over the years to get more organised.

The team arrives between 9-10am and we gasbag about life, which eventually turns into chat about this week’s production dramas and what content we have on the horizon. Penny and I spend the morning creating content, today we are filming our monthly vlog. We finalise an upcoming photoshoot and go over our plans for socials for the week. Our office sits above our shop so I might head downstairs to check in with Hayley, our shop girl.

Lunchtime

I don’t really eat breakfast so by midday I am starving. I love having lunch with the team so I usually see someone start to prepare their lunch and I tag along for the adventure. Having lunch together means we can chat freely about non-work stuff and we always have interesting convos. It gives me a chance to let out all that pent up conversation that I have pushed down all morning while trying to focus on work.

Afternoon

I spend my afternoon bouncing around working with the team. I spend some time with Jess – our production manager. We currently have three collections on the go: finishing winter and getting the last production run from our manufacturer; sampling our Classics collection; and designing new cuts and finalising prints for summer. There are always a billion things to decide on, from choosing zip colours to how many centimetres we need to take off a sleeve.

I spend time with our designer sarah on our homewares collection, which is a work in progress at the moment. We feel a bunch of fabric strike-offs and look at samples. There is a lot of time spent in the office touching fabrics and discussing details people wouldn’t probably think about. Today Sarah and I had a great chat/debate about what is the perfect shade of olive.

Evening

At 5pm I clock off for the arvo and go pick up Lottie and make our way home. Between 5-8pm is baby/family time and I let myself have that and try to put work aside. My husband has become a domestic goddess since Lottie was born and normally cooks us all dinner. We have a pretty boring but delicious roster of favourites that are quick and healthy. We both play sports so sometimes one of us runs out of the house if it’s an early game.

After Lottie goes to sleep, I go up to the home office and start the night shift. I always get my creative work done in these hours because it’s quiet and uninterrupted. I still have not mastered getting print creation done while at the studio with people around, but I am sure that will come with practice.

I put on some terrible but fab TV like Real Housewives and paint in my sketchbook or work on a new print. This week I am deep into our new summer 2021 collection. I have to be asleep by midnight because anything later I am an actual mess of a human the next day and get nothing done. I wrap up work around 11pm.

Turn your phone off and put it really far away (like, a different floor of your house). I deleted the email app from my phone a while back now because I read a great quote that called emails ‘someone else’s to do list’. I really try to keep things as separate as possible because my work and home life are so intertwined.

A philosophy I live and work by is…

Something I’ve learned the hard way is…

Creativity needs to be nurtured. When you are a creative that also happens to run a small business, it’s easy to get caught up in the day-to-day running of things. Trapped in a Visual Novel

Note: I had to write a paper for my Philosophy class about making a story similar to Plato’s work called ‘The Allegory of the Cave’.  Look it up if you want to know more details about it. I figured I would share this with you guys since it is Otome related. Mind you I had to write this for my teacher who has no knowledge of this and my English is not the best but I worked hard on this so might as well show it off. So enjoy the story!

Visual Novels are a very popular type of game that would tell a story to whoever plays the game in a reading format but with pictures of characters depending on the story. In Japan there is a company called Voltage Inc. that makes games like these that are for girls who want to romance any type of man that they want and be able to be successfully get the man they desired. There are those if given the chance would gladly trade their lives to become the main character in those game and get the guy they wish with no trouble at all. How far would these girls go to obtain happiness? This is the tale of four girls who are fortunate enough to be allowed into the games.

            It was a raining day as many people hurried on their way home from work. Everyone minding their own business as they go about their day and focusing on their own plans as the sun starts to fade and night takes over. A young 22 year old woman named Kiyoko was walking home with some groceries with her husband Hiro helping her with holding the bags. “Thanks for helping me with the shopping today.” Kiyoko said as they walked back to their apartment building. “It is no trouble at all.” Hiro said they went inside their home together. They have been married for about a year now and while they were not as affectionate as they used to be they were happy just being with each other. Kiyoko did the cooking while Hiro got dressed into more comfortable clothes. This was a normal routine at this point. They would eat together and then Hiro would be checking over work related emails as she would get ready for bed. She often found herself playing a visual novel called My Forged Wedding and would read about Yamato who was the character she was romancing. ‘It would be nice if Hiro was like Yamato sometimes.’ Kiyoko thought to herself as she read more of Yamato’s storyline. ‘Yamato knows how to cook and he is very sweet. I would not mind marrying him if I was single but I have Hiro.’ She thought before putting her phone away and deciding to get some rest for the next day.

           In a one bedroom apartment, one floor above the happy young couple was a 25 year old woman named Chihiro who had been once again rejected by a guy whom she had been interested in. No matter how hard she tried, she just could not get any guy to either notice her or be interested in dating her. “People always want me to wear makeup or dress up fancy but no one cares if I feel uncomfortable in it.” Chihiro said as she decided to play the visual novel game Star Crossed Myth. “At least Huedhart would not be bothered by it right? He would like my mind and treat me right. Plus being a god might have some benefits to it.” She said to herself as she smiled at the picture of Huedhart. “I would stay with you Huedhart and if I had powers like a god that would be a nice bonus too.” She said before looking at the time. “I should get some sleep.” She said before deciding to shut her phone off to try and get some shut eye.  

           In the apartment room one floor below there was another married couple but the marriage of 5 years was not a happy one. A 27 year old woman named Haruka was missing the time when she was younger and has come to hate her husband Nori. She realized that he only cared about his own goals and none about hers. She had wished she had never married him in the first place but he did not want to get a divorce and her family would be very disappointed in her. She knew her husband would get home very late be it from his job or probably cheating on her as far as she knows and she honestly could care less at this point in her life. She quietly went to her room and played the visual novel game called ‘Kissed by the Baddest Bidder’. She longed to have the life that the main character has. “Having a rich boyfriend who is attractive would be nice. I would trade this life to be with Eisuke any day.” She said as she happily played the game before sighing as she realized that dream would probably never happen. Once she was satisfied with how much she played for the day she went to sleep wishing that maybe she could at least have a nice dream with Eisuke in it.

           In a small studio apartment, there was 20 year old woman named Miyuki who was crying as she looked at her phone. Her boyfriend Juro had just texted her saying he had been cheating on her for a while and was hoping she would forgive him. She texted him back that she hated him and she never wanted to see him again before blocking his number as she felt speaking to him was pointless. “Two years of dating wasted.” Miyuki said before she decided to try to cheer herself up by playing the visual novel game called Be My Princess where the main character was dating a prince. “Wilfred you would never cheat on me right?” she asked although she knew she would not get a response back. “No he would not. He would probably punch my boyfriend if he knew.” Miyuki gave a small laugh. “I wish I could be with Wilfred right now.” She said before shutting off her phone. She really did not want to go to college tomorrow as she tried her best to get some sleep and try to dream positive things.  The girls would soon realize that their wishes of being with the men from the games would soon come true.

           Kiyoko opened her eyes as she looked around her surroundings for a moment. The decorations looks familiar but she knew this room was not where she normally slept with her husband. “Hey about time you woke up. Hurry and get dress! I made breakfast.” A unfamiliar male voice said as it entered the bedroom. When Kiyoko looked at him she was shocked. “Yamato?” she asked. “Yeah? Are you alright?” Yamato asked her. There was no mistaking it. He had the same light auburn hair that touched his neck and he even acknowledged his name when she said it. “This cannot be happening!” Kiyoko said as she started to panic. “Kiyoko is something wrong?” Yamato asked but was now very worried. She quickly got out of the bed and managed to find a mirror to show her face. She had long brown hair, pale skin but her eyes were now green. “I’m the main character of the game ‘My Forged Wedding’.” She said as she looked at Yamato. “Oh I’m sorry for making you worry. Forget what I just said.” Kiyoko told him. “Maybe you should rest.” Yamato said as she went up to her and gently placed his hand on her forehead. “You don’t have a fever.” He said as he was confused about why his girlfriend was acting so strangely. “Yamato!” Kiyoko said as she took his hand. “I need to get back to my world. I’m not the woman you think I am.” She started to explain. “What? What do you mean?” Yamato asked but noticed Kiyoko’s panicked look. He sighed as he sat down on the bed. “If you want to explain then I’ll listen to you.” He said softly to her. Kiyoko quietly sat next to him for a moment before beginning to speak, “I’m not sure how to explain this but I’m not your ‘Kiyoko’. I’m from a place where this is a game for women who want to be romanced and loved by a guy who won’t judge them.” Kiyoko explained. “Sounds a little bit on the strange side but keep going.” Yamato said as he was intrigued by what she was telling him. “I also might not be the only one caught up in this either. There might be other girls but it looks like they are somewhere else or even in other games. Even if I wanted to find them, I don’t know where to start.” Kiyoko said sadly but then felt Yamato take her hand. “There might be one way.” Yamato told her. “Really? Wait does this mean you are a member of Shields?” Kiyoko asked. “What? How did you know about that?” Yamato asked as he was surprised before shaking his head. “Let me guess one of those games?” he asked her. “Yes it is called ‘Love Scramble’ but that is where a lot of the other game worlds meet right? Then there might be hope after all.” Kiyoko said happily. “Well I guess I can help you but you owe me big time.” Yamato said with a grin. “Well get ready then, I have some phone calls to make.” He said before going out of the bedroom to call his friends. Kiyoko was glad but there was a part of her that was worried that it will be much harder to get the other girls to go back to the real world.

           Meanwhile in another game world, Chihiro had woken up in the arms of the dark blue haired man whom she knew was Huedhart, the God of Aquarius. He had to work as he worked for the Department of Wishes, which helped grants humans who have a strong desire for their wishes to be heard. Chihiro enjoyed the kiss on the forehead that Huedhart gave her before he left for his job. She looked at herself in the mirror and noticed her long light brown hair that reached to her hips and her now purple eyes. “So I’m the main character for Star Crossed Myth huh? Well this I don’t mind at all.” She said as she knew a lot about the game she was in. “The main character has a nice figure and a good boyfriend. This is so much better than the real world!” Chihiro exclaimed happily. “Plus this means I am the reincarnated of the goddess of fate. I wonder if I have powers here?” she said curiously as she touched a mirror and saw that she indeed could see into the other game worlds so long as it was from the same company who made them. “Oh this is going to be so much fun.” Chihiro said as she chuckled to herself. Unlike Kiyoko, she was quite happy with being with her favorite man. She had no attachments to the real world and had no desire to return. “Looks like there are three other girls who are in visual novels like me. Might as well see if I can get us all to stay in this world.” she said as she started to think of a way to get some of the girls on her side and even doing some test of her powers.

           Poor Miyuki had no idea what was going on. One moment she was in her room crying over finding out that her boyfriend Juro cheated on her and the next thing she knew she had woken up in an extremely extravagant bedroom. Not just any bedroom, she ended up in the room of Prince Wilfred from the game she knew as ‘Be My Princess’. She knew she was in his room when she saw that blonde hair as he slept right next her. Of course she had thought she was dreaming and fell right back asleep. Now she was up again only alone but still in the same bedroom. “This is not a dream is it. Juro would be so angry if he knew I was with another man.” Miyuki said to herself before sighing. “I know I thought it would be nice if I had a guy like Prince Wilfred, but I never thought I actually would be in the game.” She said to herself. “Miyuki? Are you awake?” Wilfred asked as he entered the bedroom. “Oh Wilfred! Wow you really are attractive.” Miyuki said before soon shaking her head. “No! I shouldn’t be saying those things even if they are true!” she said as she was so very confused at what was happening. Wilfred gave out a small chuckle, “While I am flattered, you really are not acting like yourself.” he said as he approached the bed. “Are you alright my love?” he questioned. “Honestly I’m not sure. I feel like my mind is a mess. Maybe I have a very bad headache.” Miyuki told him. “I will have the staff get you some medicine for that headache and do not worry about your princess lessons. The most important thing is for you to get well. I sadly need to work but I will make sure you are taken care of.” Wilfred said as he was very worried for his beloved.  “I’m sorry for worrying you.” Miyuki said before feeling Wilfred kiss her forehead. “Think nothing of it. I’ll see if I can convince my butler to give me some time to see you.” Wilfred said before leaving the room once more. Miyuki stood up and looked at herself in the mirror. Her hair that was now to her shoulders was a burgundy color and her blue eyes were looking right back at her. “I really am the main character. This is pretty nice but is this really a good thing to be here?” Miyuki said before she walked over to where she noticed a beautiful balcony with the view of the kingdom Prince Wilfred was from. “This is so much better than what I have now. I think I will stay here for a while.” She said with a smile as she decided to enjoy being with her prince.

           Meanwhile Haruka was looking out the window in a penthouse suite in different visual novel world. She was pretty excited the moment she woke up. She was not in that cramped apartment and everything looked so expensive. “This place does look oddly familiar though.” She said as she walked around the bedroom to explore it. She opened up the closet and noticed the suits that were inside. “I recognize these suits. Does this mean I’m in the ‘Kissed by the Baddest Bidder’ game?” she asked herself. “What are you doing?” the young man asked. Haruka looked at the man with dark brown hair with light brown highlights mixed in it. That black suit with his purple dress shirt and that trademark smirk that she figured out who he was, “Eisuke?” she asked as she walked up to him. “Of course it is me. Who else would it be?” he asked.  ‘I’m not dreaming! Yes! This is the best thing that could ever happen to me!’ Haruka thought as she swiftly hugged him. “Oh you are so attractive and you smell nice.” She said happily. “I know that and the smell is the cologne I normally wear. You seem really pleased.” He commented. “Oh I am!” she said as she gently traced her fingers on his face. “I’m a lucky woman to be with you.” She told him. Eisuke chuckled, “You sure are complimenting me a lot today. Not that I mind.” He told her and he pulled her into his arms. Haruka felt quite pleased with these turn of events. Here she was with the man she always dreamed of and living the life she wanted. What more could she ask for? She smiled and pulled Eisuke into a kiss. She was glad to toss away her old life with her good for nothing husband to be with Eisuke. She pulled away for the moment, “Oh you have to work right? I’m sorry I just got so excited.” Haruka said as she blushed slightly at her actions and removed herself from his touch. “I did not mind at all.” He said giving her a grin. Haruka looked into the mirror for a moment and just now realized how she looked like. She had short brown hair and her figure was skinner than she used to be. She also noticed her eyes were a honey brown color as well. Most importantly she was 20 years old again. “You look fine.” Eisuke said as he thought she was worried about how she looked. “Eisuke? You think you can spend some time with me today?” Haruka asked. “I can always make room for you.” He replied. “Good because right now I want to enjoy being with you.” She told him. “Missed me that much? Alright you have my attention.” He said as he walked over to her. Haruka happily hugged him once more and was looking forward to this life.

           Back in Yamato’s apartment, Kiyoko was getting ready to meet with Yamato’s friends who were coming over but soon started to notice mirrors were appearing near her. “Huh? What’s going on?” she said before saw the face of another girl. “So there are other girls! Are you one of the girls that got trapped with me? Oh my name is Kiyoko by the way. What is your name?” Kiyoko asked. “Well hello there. It’s Chihiro. I couldn’t help but notice that you seem to be the only one who wants to go back to that world.” Chihiro said. Kiyoko looked around but noticed everything was frozen in place, including Yamato who looked like he was going to tell her something. “Of course I want to go back! I have a husband waiting for me!” Kiyoko told her. “Well about that. You see the other two girls don’t want to go back.” Chihiro said. “What? Prove it to me!” she demanded. “Fine I’ll have them talk as well.” She simply said before showing her how the two other girls were doing via the strange magical mirrors. “Hello! I’m Kiyoko and I have a husband back in the real world. I want to go back but I was told you two do not wish to return?” Kiyoko asked them. “What the hell! I was going to have some fun time with Eisuke! I know he is going to be way better than my soon to be ex-husband but you are ruining the mood here.” Haruka said angrily at Kiyoko. “But that means you are cheating on your husband!” Kiyoko responded. “Kiyoko right? I’m Haruka by the way. Listen here I hate my good for nothing husband. He is nothing more than a man who just wants to control me. It was always what he wanted and what his dreams were. Did he ever care about my life? No! I’m not going back to that life! I’m staying with Eisuke.” Haruka told her. Kiyoko was shocked and turned to look at Miyuki. “What about you? Do you want to go back?” Kiyoko asked. “It’s Miyuki and honestly I don’t. I recently found out that my boyfriend in the real world was cheating on me. Prince Wilfred has been nothing but kind to me and I like being with him. I’m sorry Kiyoko but I’m going to have to say no. Please understand that not everyone has happy relationships like you do.” Miyuki said to her feeling a little bit guilty but she was not changing her mind. “I’m guessing you are staying too Chihiro?” Kiyoko asked although her tone was quite upset. “Of course I am. I have no luck with the guys in the real world and no one wants to date me. In this world I have powers of fate and a man who loves me for who I am. Why give that up? Looks like you are the only one who wants to leave.” Chihiro told her. Kiyoko looked at the frozen in time Yamato before looking at the other girls. “My husband Hiro will miss me or worse he will think that I am dead.” Kiyoko said. “Oh I think I can help you forget about him and don’t you worry about him.” Chihiro said with a dark smirk. “What are you going to do?” Kiyoko asked before she screamed as she felt as if her mind was being ripped apart. “I am the goddess of fate now. Yamato is the man you will be with and your will not remember your former husband.” Chihiro proclaimed. “I’ll make sure Yamato also forgets about what you said before about your old world. So say good bye to those memories.” She said as she snickered. “NO!” Kiyoko screamed in agony before she felt she could no longer hold on. She collapsed onto the ground as the girls looked on from their mirrors. “Is she dead?” Miyuki asked. “No I just took her memories away of her husband. It will be as if she had never met him and stayed single.” Chihiro replied. “So our guys in the real world are going to be distraught at us missing? I was hoping to make my now ex-husband suffer a little bit so this is fine.” Haruka said. “I agree I kind wanted the boyfriend to suffer for what he did to me.” Miyuki said. “Don’t worry about them. You should focus on your new lives now. This will probably be the last time we speak as doing this for a long time is not a good idea.” Chihiro said. “Good point. Well I’m off to have some fun time with Eisuke! Have fun with your new lives!” Haruka said and with that her mirror faded away. “Thank you for helping us stay here. Take care.” Miyuki before her mirror too faded away. Chihiro looked down at the unconscious Kiyoko, “You should have just adjusted but you just had to be selfish and want to go back. Well at least know your life will be happier. Enjoy your new life Kiyoko.” She said and with that her mirror also faded with time now moving once more. Yamato looked around for a moment but soon his attention when to the unconscious Kiyoko. “Kiyoko!” he called out and gently picked her up and moved her to the bedroom to rest. Kiyoko slowly opened her eyes and looked at Yamato. “Yamato?” she asked. “Hey don’t worry me like that.” Yamato said as he sighed. “I felt like we forgot to do something but clearly you need some rest.” He said to her. “Yeah I’m sorry for making you worry.” Kiyoko said. “Just focus on getting better. I’ll go make you something to eat.” Yamato said as he left the room. “He’s so sweet to me.” Kiyoko said as she lay back down on the bed. “I feel like I’m forgetting something though.” She said but soon felt tears start to fall. “Why am I crying?” she said to herself. Yamato soon came back a with tray of food but the moment he saw her crying he put the tray on the ground and went to hug her. “It’s ok. I’m here for you.” He said as he did his best to comfort her. Kiyoko felt better with Yamato and she knew she would be fine eventually but there was still a part of her that wondered if she left something behind. Kiyoko never regained any of her memories and lived her life peacefully with Yamato. She never remembering the husband in the real world that she left behind. It was as if she had vanished into thin air and no one remembered Kiyoko except for Hiro who would be hunted with the memory of losing her for the rest of his life.

Notes: Weapon of a Jedi, Pt. 1

Welcome to another installment of author’s notes! (if you missed them for Servants of the Empire: Edge of the Galaxy, you can start here.)

WARNING: These notes will completely spoil The Weapon of a Jedi. If you haven’t read it, stop and go here.

The Weapon of a Jedi began with an email from Lucasfilm in August 2014. Did I want to tell the story of Luke Skywalker’s first lightsaber duel, and offer readers a little sneak peek at The Force Awakens?

That was an even easier “yes” than most invitations to tell a Star Wars story. The idea was that Luke and the droids would explore a ruined Jedi temple on a jungle planet, which immediately made me smile. Luke, C-3PO and R2-D2 were the first three Kenner action figures I’d bought as a nine-year-old on Long Island. How many times had I invented a similar story back in 1978, using those figures and terrain made out of couch cushions?

Still, I admit to being a bit nervous as we filled in the details for a book with the working title of Luke Skywalker and the Lost Temple. This was Luke Skywalker – one of the most iconic characters in Star Wars, and a tricky character to get right.

He also wasn’t a Star Wars character for whom I felt a natural affinity.

I’d always been a Han guy – as a kid, I thought Luke should have run off with Han and Chewie and become a space pirate, instead of worrying about a bunch of cosmic philosophy. (I would have been a terrible rebel.) It’s not that I disliked Luke – it was more that I felt I lacked a sense of the character despite decades of watching and reading his adventures. So I had to fix that, and quickly.

An amusing aside: I confessed the above at 2015’s New York Comic-Con while sharing a microphone with Greg Rucka, who wrote the Han Solo adventure Smuggler’s Run. No sooner had I said those words than Greg leaned over and admitted he’d always been a Luke guy.

(Amusing aside to the aside: Neither of us had shared this with our editor. Writers, man.)

Anyway, I enrolled myself in Luke Boot Camp. I started by watching the classic trilogy again, concentrating on Luke’s reactions – not just what he said but his body language. How did he respond when questioned by other characters? When learning from Obi-Wan and Yoda? When being pushed to do something he disagreed with?

Two things I read unlocked Luke for me. The first was in The Making of Star Wars, J.W. Rinzler’s terrific behind-the-scenes chronicle. Mark Hamill recalled shooting the scene where Luke and Threepio intercept Artoo. Hamill played the scene angrily, only to hear George Lucas call “cut.” His advice: “It’s not a big deal.” Disagreeing with his director, Hamill delivered a deliberately “small” take, figuring Lucas would see how wrong he was. The director thought it was perfect. After that, Hamill understood his character a lot better – and nearly 30 years later, so did I.

The other moment was a TheForce.net post written by a commenter named Jedi Princess: “Luke is gentle, in a way that so few action/adventure movie heroes are.” Yep – that’s it exactly. Luke destroys the Death Star by taking Obi-Wan Kenobi’s advice to “let go” and allow the Force to guide him. Two movies later, he defeats the Sith not by using his lightsaber, but by throwing it away and awakening his father’s love for him. It’s in Empire that Luke is most like a conventional action-movie hero, spurning his teachers’ advice and rushing off to confront Darth Vader. That turns out to be a disaster: he learns a terrible secret he isn’t ready for and the friends he tried to rescue must risk their lives to rescue him.

Those two lessons prepared me for the book. (Which was good, because I had about a month in which to write it.) I felt ready, but still knew Weapon would be a challenge. A big chunk of it would be introspective, with Luke limited to Force training and the droids acting as a Greek chorus. But the story’s the story. Thinking about how to approach that, I kept coming back to fairy tales.

But we’ll get to that.

Prologue

The frame story is set shortly before The Force Awakens, and features Jessika Pava, one of the pilots seen in the battle above Starkiller Base.

The basic beats of the frame story – a pilot, droid duty, Threepio as storyteller – came from Lucasfilm, including the funny bit about Threepio being persuaded not to tell a story everyone had heard before.

I started writing Weapon of a Jedi before the Easter eggs for The Force Awakens had been worked out with Story Group, so I left placeholders for them. I originally named the pilot Draupadi Pava, changing her first name when Story Group chose an on-screen character who’d already been named Jess because she was played by Game of Thrones veteran Jessica Henwick. (In the credits she’s Jess Testor, a detail that slipped through the cracks.)

A funny thing: I hadn’t read the script for The Force Awakens, so I assumed Artoo was busy elsewhere on the base, off in an X-wing, etc. After a couple of false starts I was told just to avoid our favorite astromech. As you might imagine, I wondered what that could possibly mean.

More bits from the prologue:

On D’Qar, Threepio mentions a long-ago diplomatic mission to Circarpous with Luke and Artoo. Hey, a reference to Splinter of the Mind’s Eye! Well, sort of – Alan Dean Foster’s ur-Legends 1978 novel starts off that way, but inferring that everything that happened in Splinter therefore “really happened” would be a continuity bridge too far.

I now think I overdid it with the Legends nods in Weapon of a Jedi -- they don’t demand special knowledge or distract the reader, which is good, but less would have been more. In my defense, I knew from the start that I wanted to pay homage to two Legends tales that could plausibly claim to be Luke’s “first” lightsaber duel, so I included a nod to Splinter very early. We’ll get to the other tale later.

Note that Threepio has updated his Tranlang database and is now fluent in nearly seven million forms of communication. Who says you can’t teach old droids new tricks?

Part One

The original idea for Weapon of the Jedi hewed pretty closely to the final story: while on a mission for the Alliance, Luke senses something in the Force and is called to the planet Devaron. Dodging an Imperial patrol, he reaches the planet, discovers the Temple of Eedit and trains there. He’s interrupted by the Scavenger, who’s there to loot the temple and sees Luke as easy prey. Stormtroopers arrive soon after that, beginning a three-way game of cat and mouse. With the Imperials out of the way, Luke duels the Scavenger and defeats him.

I wanted to simplify the three-way running battle, which felt a little more like Indiana Jones than Luke Skywalker to me. And I was worried about the idea of a call to a distant planet. If the summons was vague, how would Luke know where to go? Yet specificity felt like supernatural exposition, risking letting the reader hear the gears of the plot whirring. (Let’s be honest: the ghost-in-a-blizzard scene in Empire is pretty clunky storytelling.)

My solution was to have Luke on or near Devaron in the first place. A little convenient, maybe, but it eliminated the Where to Go problem – the Force’s answer would essentially be, “Right here, dummy.” And that would let me get away with a bit more supernatural aid elsewhere – a dream or a vision of what Luke was being called to do.

I also felt it was important for Luke to reject the Force’s call at first. That’s a basic element of the heroic journey, and would also show that Luke was torn between responsibilities and identities. The destroyer of the Death Star would be an Alliance hero and recruiter, encouraged to continue along that path. But Luke would also hunger to learn about the Force as his father had – a far more difficult path considering he no longer had a teacher.

That yielded my first pass at the opening of the book: While on a mission for the Alliance, Luke refuels his Y-wing at Devaron, shakes off a funny feeling in the Force and continues on to Giju, where he meets with a resistance group of Herglics. A Herglic elder remembers the Jedi, and tells Luke he should wear his lightsaber with pride but keep in mind that having one is a death sentence under the Empire. Stormtroopers break up the meeting and Luke escapes, but feels a prickle in the Force and catches sight of a mysterious figure watching him. He then delays his mission to return to Devaron, accepting that it’s where the Force wants him to go.

Not a bad start, but it would have featured a lot of standing around and unneeded exposition – neither Luke nor the reader needed a big speech about the Jedi’s value or the Empire’s drive to destroy them.

My editor, Michael Siglain, felt we needed to get Luke to Devaron a lot more quickly, and he was right -- a basic principle of storytelling is to start as late as possible. So I scrapped the meeting on Giju and replaced it with Luke and Wedge in X-wings, battling TIEs above the planet. Luke’s trip to Devaron and his rejection of the Force’s call now came after the initial mission, instead of before it.

Now we started with an action beat, one that showed Luke as a starfighter ace. That was a more exciting way of showing him caught between being a rebel hero and a Jedi apprentice. To quote George, it was faster and more intense – as well as cleaner and better.

Some notes:

A few readers told me I’d screwed up by making Wedge Red Three and not Red Two. Nope – that was a deliberate switch based on the fact that he’s Rogue Three at Hoth.

Commander Narra first appeared in The Empire Strikes Back radio dramatization penned by Brian Daley – his death at Derra led to Luke taking command of Rogue Group. That’s a Legends nod I’d keep -- from the beginning Mike and Story Group suggested using the radio dramas for background lore, which as a big Daley fan I was thrilled to do.

I introduced the idea of Alliance pilots using “scatter protocols” to avoid Imperial capture – and of Luke being assigned a more complicated pattern because of his value to the rebel cause. That was a compact, logical way to confront him with special treatment he dislikes.

I had to switch Luke from an X-wing to a Y-wing so Threepio had a ride to Devaron. The designation of the Y-wing as Y4 is a really obscure Legends reference – Y4 is the Y-wing Luke uses in the Holiday Special’s Boba Fett cartoon. Credit Pablo Hidalgo for the suggestion.

It isn’t all Legends references in this section – the prequels shape the story too. Luke’s prophetic dream about practicing in the temple was meant to echo Anakin’s dreams about Shmi and Padmé. An important part of the prequels that’s easily missed is that Anakin doesn’t have superhuman reflexes, but uses the Force to see things before they happen. That’s why his nightmares about his wife are so terrifying – he knows they’re not mere dreams but glimpses of the future.

Note also that Luke remembers advice from Obi-Wan which is word for word the counsel Qui-Gon gave Obi-Wan in The Phantom Menace. I liked the idea of Obi-Wan and Luke sitting around a campfire on the way to Mos Eisley, with the older man telling his new student not to center on his anxieties.

I also wanted dreams and visions to guide Luke – though as discussed above, I knew I had to pick my spots. I imagine the Force often manifests itself in dreams, even for non-Jedi -- people’s minds would be most open to the will of the Force while they sleep. Dreams and the tricky business of interpreting them are also common elements of fairy tales, which fit the tone I wanted during Luke’s time on Devaron.

An idea I dropped was to put Luke in a cantina on Devaron so I could show how much he’d grown since his wide-eyed trip to Mos Eisley. That was scotched to steer clear of Greg’s Han Solo book – and, I presume, the scenes in Maz’s castle. I replaced the idea with putting Luke in the depot in Tikaroo, which I depicted as more like a safari lodge than a dive bar.

Luke first used the alias “Korl Marcus” in Marvel #49, “The Last Jedi.” That’s one of my favorite tales from the old Marvel days, and was an appropriate Legends story to mine for a couple of reasons: a) it’s about Luke finding an unlikely source of Jedi wisdom and b) it also begins with a journey in a Y-wing.

is a Rhylsing Award nominated poet, musician, and elder advocate. He is the author of two poetry collections published by the Red Salon, Spear of Stars (2018) and Soulless Heavens (2019). Recent work has appeared in Nixes Mate Review, The Scrib Arts Journal, The Wild Word, and Vita Brevis.

The Interview

1. What inspired you to write poetry?

From a young age, poetry has been my way of sharing thoughts and observations that could not otherwise be easily introduced into conversation. As an adult, it’s also how I process trauma and grief, from surviving shoot-outs and seeing horrible events at work, to losing contact with my children in the wake of a divorce. I don’t want to self-obsess and start every poem with “I” though and many of my current poems tell stories about the down-and-out people I encounter throughout my day, whether an addict waiting for her dealer behind a building or a disabled vet whose family never visit.

2. Who introduced you to poetry?

When I entered 4th grade I had a teacher at the Albany Academy named Mrs. Everett. She was from England and “old school” in the best way. We were given short poems to memorize and recite each week such as Carl Sandberg’s “The Fog.” If we got our assignments done, she let us read books from her library, which contained classics such as Malory’s Le Morte d’Arthur.

My family had shelves full of books. My brother and I recognized that these contained the secret to the mystical power that adults had over us. He got started on the science books, and I started reading the philosophy and poetry. I didn’t always understand what I was reading but they felt familiar to me somehow. I kept a dictionary on hand to look up the meaning of words. The first poets that I recall relating best to were e.e. cummings, T.S. Eliot, William Butler Yeats, and A.E. Housman. I also discovered William S. Burroughs way too young.

2.1. Why did you find yourself relating best to “  e.e. cummings, T.S. Eliot, William Butler Yeats, and A.E. Housman.” ?

The accessible avant-gardist e. e. cummings appealed to me as his poems were stripped down to the bone yet impactful and visually appealing. His playful, off-label use of syntax and made-up words opened up possibilities for me as a kid writing my first non-rhyming poems.

T.S Eliot was another poet that every college educated family had hanging around on their shelves. The Waste Land gave me a road map for leaving the 20th Century. It didn’t go anywhere especially good, but how could it. “Well now that’s done: and I’m glad it’s over.”

William Butler Yeats was one of the greatest magickal minds of his time. I didn’t realize this on my first reading of his poems as his occult history was almost entirely glossed over by the academics. As a kid I knew there was something pagan and exciting lurking behind the verse. I also enjoyed reading the Irish folklore he and Lady Gregory preserved. Later I would learn of his run ins with Aleister Crowley and that added to the allure.

A.E. Housman’s A Shropshire Lad was written with the gloomy adolescent male in mind. I memorized several of the poems and drew cartoons to go along with them. When The Smiths came on the scene, I immediately connected with the lyrics on the Hatful of Hollow ep which seemed to have been spawned from a similar maudlin mind.

2.2. Why did you discover “William S. Burroughs way too young”?

My grandparents had friends, Vincent and Brita, who were painters who also owned an enviable art collection which included a Picasso, purchased for half-nothing before he was famous. I would sit and read in their library, and of course the title Naked Lunch jumped out at me. I was in middle school at the time. Maybe 5th grade? The strangest fiction I had read prior to this was Madeleine L’Engle’s Time Quintet and Ursla K. Le Guin’s The Lathe of Heaven. I didn’t quite know what the hell was happening in it, but it was filthy and funny. I was hooked and read almost everything Burroughs wrote before the age of 16. I enjoyed making collage and cut-ups, some of which I published in zines I made with Sam McPheeters, and during high school, Burroughs was one of my main influences along with The Situationists International, Dr. Anton LaVey, and The Church of Subgenius in my visual art, comics, poetry and prose.

3. How aware were you of the dominating presence of older poets?

In my early teens, I’d gone on my own to hear Allen Ginsberg and Anne Waldman read, and having read Burroughs, Kerouac, Corso and others associated with them, knew that I could learn a lot from the Beats. I also knew that I would have to find my own voice. I was in absolutely no rush to do so. Though I have contributed lyrics and vocals on several underground recordings of punk and experimental music and edited Situationist and Punk zines and an academic journal (Dialectical Anthropology) I did not start seriously seeking publication of my poems until 2018. Now I am one of the older poets!

4. What is your daily writing routine?

I never know when I will be struck by the need to write a poem or story. Almost none of my poems are planned. I don’t sit down and say, “I’m going to bang out a poem about a seagull.” I might overhear a phrase in conversation, read a terrible on-line review, or have a traumatic memory resurface. I always keep a notebook on me so I can jot down whatever strikes me as worth recording. Some of these notes wind their way into poems.

Less often I will write short stories, essays, or tinker with one of my novels-in-progress. I find that speculative fiction allows me to hide real stories and people (from my work as an investigator) in plain sight and process some of my worst experiences.

5. What motivates you to write?

Poets and authors have helped me make sense of being human better than any church ever could. I hope I can help others unravel some of the mysteries, complexities and inanities of existence. For some of us, it’s a matter of survival – finding a reason to stay sober, make less terrible choices, and get through another day.

6. What is your work ethic?

Many people complain that they have no time to write. I do my best not to have unmet obligations hanging over me. I pay my bills, get the laundry done, never leave a dish in the sink. I may find other reasons to procrastinate, but at least I won’t waste time worrying about daily chores and it’s easier to write with a clean house.

7. How do the writers you read when you were young influence you today?

I feel a distinct kinship with certain poets and authors. There is a lineage that exists for writers akin to the lineages in religious orders, martial arts schools or royalty. There are poets I read in my teens and twenties who I abhor now, such as Bukowski. I still read him now and again, perhaps as a reminder of what not to be. As for my own tribe, I’ll read Corso and then follow the stream back to Shelley who defined “the pain of bliss” that both poets articulated. I’ll jump from Ignatow’s mountains and bagels, to Williams, “No ideas but in things” to Whitman’s sacred bodies, and to teenage rebel Rimbaud, and then back to where I find – myself.

8. Who of today’s writers do you admire the most and why?

Juleigh Howard-Hobson is a fellow avant-garde traditionalist. Unlike most modern poets, she is also a formalist. Despite poems written in form not being in style, she is prolifically published and has earned awards and several important nominations. She’s also published fiction and non-fiction, all while living off the grid and running a small family farm in the Pacific Northwest. As one of my mentors, Juleigh has been generous with her time and is always willing to share calls for submissions and her extensive knowledge of the small presses and poetry journals.

9. Why do you write, as opposed to doing anything else?

I am a fair guitar player, have managed to sell some of my art in galley shows, and apparently my singing is okay for what it is, but poetry is the one thing I feel I have the ability to be “the best” at if I focus more of my energy on reading, appreciating and writing poetry. It’s sometimes a solitary exercise, but there is a vibrant community out there as well. Now that I’ve been sober for three years and am not a resentment machine, I can get along fairly well with other poets and maybe even be an asset to the community.

10. What would you say to someone who asked you “How do you become a writer?”

I can only answer how one might become a writer like myself. There are many paths, and some are surely more lucrative than my own. First you must be a reader. I don’t trust poets who don’t read other poets. I believe they are only taking selfies with words.

Secondly, you must be a listener and understand that listening isn’t the opposite of talking. It’s an active role. Be a semiotician and try to understand why people are saying what they are saying. Why are they choosing certain words over others? Pay attention to tone of voice, body language and the messages that they are trying to convey with their personal style. This practice of reading the signs that people flash, has the added benefit of anticipating problems, and could save your life!

Get outside, have some adventures, mix it up with people outside of your usual circle, and observe everything. Try to spot the details that others miss. Drive to some town you’ve never been to before and spot what’s different about it from your town. What are the names on the headstones? What are the mom and pop businesses selling? Get out of the car and talk to people and ask them questions and you may learn of local legends, ghost stories, and witch’s graves.

Stay curious and be present in life. Maybe then you’ll have something interesting to tell the rest of us. People love a good story, so you have that in your favour from the start. Go find one.

11. Tell me about the writing projects you have on at the moment.

I am contributing spoken word to recordings with Herr Lounge Corps and we should have an album out before long. I am performing and recording stateside with Alec K. Redfearn, a Providence based composer of weird music. I plan on introducing and editing the collected poems of a certain forgotten female poet and occultist. Some of my weird fiction stories have been published by horror presses and I’m slowly working on a couple of novels. I’m gratified that my poems have been published in journals and anthologies around the world, that I’ve been nominated for the Rhysling Award, and that I have more than enough for a third collection when the time is right. People are reading my writing and are reaching out to tell me what it means to them. For me, that means everything.
