Some gifts that you can give over the holiday season and any other time of the year that are more sustainable.
FOOD GIFTS are the greatest thing, whether it’s a special treat, or meals, or a bag of onions and potatoes—someone always needs this, it will be used, and given how many people have had serious cuts made to their income this year these kinds of gifts may be more important than ever
Food gifts could also be gift certificates to a local farm where the person receiving the certificate can pick out exactly what kind of local food they would like. You’re giving this gift certificate to an especially carnivorous person? See if you can get a certificate for a meat box or meat CSA
Food gifts might also be a gift certificate to a restaurant; you’re helping a small business AND getting someone you love a delicious meal
Enough about food, how about CLOTHES!! There are a few online consignment places (like ThreadUp) that can help you find the perfect garment for someone at an affordable price—and another great thing about it is you’re extending this garment’s life and keeping it from ending up in the landfill prematurely.
Since ThreadUp isn’t available in a lot of places in the world (unless you like paying customs), and IF it is SAFE for you to go to a consignment/thrift/used clothes shop that is also another way to get lovely gifts and support the local economy
Looking for not second-hand clothes? Plenty of brands are manufacturing clothing from recycled garments to water bottles. (I bought my mom a new fleece sweater made from water bottles and it only set me back $38).
Make a wish list, and ask people in return what’s on their wish list. Nope, it’s not picky, it’s not being ungracious: you’re working to eliminate a lot of unneeded and unwanted gifts. Also, it’s not sustainable to spend your money on stuff people don’t want.
A friend or family member is setting up house for the first time? They might enjoy any of the gifts above, or something to put in the new place: let’s talk about used furniture. No, I’m not talking couches or upholstered stuff (unless you are); maybe it’s a shelf, or a nice mirror you found at furniture thrift store, or that coffee table you have up in the attic and simply no room for. Or it could be a much smaller item: beeswax wraps or jars for food storage
Toothbrush and toothpaste. Okay, hear me out on this one: these were the go to stocking stuffers (along with chocolate) in my house, but this year I’m making sure that everyone in my house is getting a bamboo (or any other of the less plastic waste toothbrushes on the market) toothbrush and some toothpaste tablets. All the packaging was plastic free on these items and they will 100% be useful
While we’re talking about personal care products as gifts: want to make up someone a self care basket? Include items like toothpaste tablets, and a luxurious hand cream that comes in a tin (got mine at the farmers’ market ), a loofah made from real gourds, and a shampoo and conditioner bar.
Reader in your life? Used books make great gifts: it extends the life of a book before it gets tossed in the garbage or recycling, it educates or at least entertains the person reading, AND it supports a local small business. Also most used books only cost $3-$8 (some are as low as 25 cents each), which means you might be able to give someone hours and hours of entertainment with a small stack of books without breaking your bank.
Gift cards. Unfortunately, a lot of gift cards are made of plastic, but even that may be more sustainable than buying someone items they don’t need or want. It’s not an impersonal gift: you are letting the receiver have the ultimate choice of purchasing whatever they want or need. This can even include more private items that they may not want to specifically ask for on their wish list. Just don’t get an Amazon gift card, and why not make sure they can also use this gift card to buy groceries if they need to
Pay a bill for someone. This doesn’t need a long-winded reason of why it’s sustainable and probably so needed by so many people right now
Give a gift certificate from a local business. Pick a local business; restaurant, farm, garden centre, whatever floats your boat. Obviously make sure that the receiver could and would use this gift certificate. Extra points if the certificate is printed on paper or electronic, etc.
This isn’t a gift but stop ripping wrapping paper and treat it kindly and reuse it. We’ve had wrapping paper in circulation for years in my family—the same pieces of paper used over and over again. Gently opened, folded up and stored until it’s needed again. If you want to go off of wrapping paper entirely; of course you can always use newspaper, cloth, boxes, or reusable bags to make amazing, more sustainable gift coverings.

Part 32: here
.
Why? Why couldn't he have just stayed dead? WHY? All he has done is make things worse! So much worse. Sure, Lewis is alive, but at what cost…and for how much longer?  How much more can he lose? Actually, no, he doesn’t want an answer to that question. Arthur used to think nothing could top being murdered by his best friend in terms of terrible experiences and, oh boy, has he been proven wrong.
“Hey…”
Wrapped in his carefully constructed cocoon of self-loathing and mourning, Arthur ignores the irritatingly cheerful voice. He is beginning to hate the sensation of sound vibrating in his chest.
“HEY!”
Of course, the demon can’t take a hint and leave him to suffer in silence.
‘What,’ Arthur projects sullenly, pulling his attention forward. As much as he would rather drown in despair, he doesn’t want the bastard to start threatening Lewis’s family again. After failing a few more times at crashing the van- Arthur doesn’t even get the merger satisfaction of freezing his body for a millisecond now the demon is on alert- this really is the very least he can do.
“We’re here. I thought you might appreciate being coherent for the visit.”
Begrudgingly, Arthur finds the motivation needed to focus on their shared soundings. Surprise, surprise, there is a lot of flat desert. However, now the expanse is broken by a single structure; Kingman Mechanics, sign dark, sitting directly ahead of them. It is the same half red-brick, half corrugated iron building it has always been, yet the exterior is cold and uninviting. It looks like one of his frozen memories, drained of all colour and lifeless. Arthur watches with mounting discontent while the demon parks and strolls up to the front door.
Wind throws dust at their eyes, forcing the demon to squint in shared discomfort. The gusts are stronger than usual, and, if Arthur were to hazard a guess based on the darkening clouds, he’d say there was a storm coming in. Overhead, grey blackens, the day begining to transition into night. Lines of police tap, positioned across the closed garage door have been pulled free and are waving about like demented hands. No sign of police, though.
“Hello! I’m home,” The demon sings out, flinging open the unlocked door, “Oh wait…I forgot. There’s no one here…”
Arthur knows the sentence is meant to upset him and hates the stab grief, which immediately shoots through his chest. The fact that he’ll never see Lance come ambling out of the side door to greet him and welcome back is painful.
“At least…There should be no one here,” The demon continues, examining the space with a more critical eye, glancing back at the open door, “That was definitely locked when I left.”
Arthur is too busy drowning in another wave to depression to care much about the reception desk, which has been pulled apart and emptied across the ground. Usually, around this time of day, Lance would either be working late or packing up, grumbling about the low lighting and his poor vision.
Casually, the demon meanders over, examining the mess left scattered on the floor. Loose paper rustles underfoot, disturbed by their approach.
“So someone’s been through here…I don’t suppose you get a lot of thieves around these parts?”
When he doesn’t respond right away, the demon prompts with a more impatient, “Are you with me back there? ”
‘No...No thieves,’ He musters, mulishly compelling his attention onto the room. Neither he nor his Uncle had been particularly vigilant about locking doors, and they’d never had an issue. Why does it even bother asking when It has all Arthur’s memories? The demon knows everything he does.
A loud snort of amusement. They move further into the building. The door to the hall is open, revealing the narrow passage leading to the equally narrow stairs. Empty and dark.
“Please, I didn’t bother keeping even half the crap you had stored up here. You think I want a few hundred hours’ worth of pathetic pining after dumb friends, or re-runs of the same repetitive daily routines, over and over and over? Trust me, I chucked that shit right out.”
They pause at the entrance to his Uncle’s small, cramped office. Like the reception, the space is a mess. Someone has turned this room as well.
“I just keep the useful and really juicy stuff. Sides, it’s not like you’re going anywhere if I ever need a refresher.”
His Uncle’s shotgun is missing. Okay, that catches his attention. That shotgun had been a fixture of the office for almost as long as Arthur can remember. The reason why the door had been religiously locked during his childhood and teen years. It’s weird to see it missing. Are the two shots kept handy in the desk drawer also missing?   Had his Uncle used them?
Of course, no sooner has he thought it, the demon is checking the draws for the shots. They are, indeed, missing.
“Now, who would come all the way out here just to steal some old gun?”
Arthur has no idea why, but, apparently, this question is rhetorical because the demon has started prowling the space, peering into filing-cabinet and at misplaced, scattered files. A patch of rustic discolouration marking the inside of the door catches their eye. Arthur feels that disconcerting predatory interest return as it picks out several other, similar, splotches. The demon reaches forward, running a finger over the nearest patch, bringing the hand up to its mouth. Arthur gets a flash of phantom nausea at the metallic taste. Blood. What he wouldn’t give to be able to throw up right now.
“Hm…” An irritated sigh, “and this is why I hate loose ends.”
The demon wipes the hand clean on Arthur’s pants. Obviously, the blood meant something more to it than to Arthur. Whoever had been here had either hurt themselves searching the room or had some pre-existing injury. Also, this had to be at least a day old, meaning the person was probably gone.
“Yes, most likely,” The demon answers his unvoiced question unprompted, “Suppose I haven’t killed as many people as I thought...How inconvenient. And here I was hoping to hit the road before sunrise, but it looks like I’ll be hunting around for this moron.”
‘If this road trip so important we should just go right now.’ He throws in half-heartedly, because damnit if a small part of him still hopes that he can stop this.
“Ha. I like the enthusiasm, but it really is nothing urgent.”
One last frown is directed at the bloodstain before they spin to head back into the hall and up the narrow stairs.
“A lot has changed in the last hundred years, and I’ve got a little catching up to do which requires a bit of travel. And then there’s this time-travel mystery to sort out. Lucky us, with a double-strength soul, this body isn’t going to burn out not nearly as fast as it should. It’ll give me the time I need to make this little partnership permeant.”
‘...,’
“The hassle I go through, I swear. Humans don’t even live that long to begin with but, all to often, you idiots just pass on for no good reason. Half the time, I’m not even siphoning that much energy. So weak.”
With the sky coved, there is bearly any natural light coming through Arthur’s bedroom window, making the room gloomy like the rest of the building. Undeterred, the demon starts to rifle through the narrow wardrobe pressed against the opposite wall, putting an end to their ‘conversation.’ While his body goes about chucking clothes onto the bed and sorting them into piles, Arthur just stares. ‘Make this little partnership permeant’…He expects the words to make him sad, sadder, or angry, but he only feels numb.
“Ugh. Your fashion sense is terrible. This baggy orange stuff is about as unflattering as clothes can get.”
Arthur watches his body spin and pose in front of the dusty full-length mirror he has jammed into the back on his wardrobe, having spent a good half hour trying on various combinations. Black seems to be the colour of choice. No surprises there. The black shirt, dark blue jeans, and black jacket are all old and worn down. He hasn’t worn this stuff in years, meaning the clothes are a whole lot tighter than Arthur really likes.
“I suppose this will have to do.” The demon examins a lime green scarf, and Arthur can feel the contempt directed at the only green coloured thing he owns. A gift from someone, he can’t remember who.
“At least it’s not the ugly orange life vest.”
They make eye contact in the mirror, and Arthur mentality winces, wishing he could look away.
“You know, I bet we’d look pretty good with a proper body maintenance routine and some nice clothes. I’ve definitely had more unfortunate hosts.”
“Something to do later. Can’t be killing people 24/7 after all.”
They pack up one of the clothing piles in an old school backpack, slinging it over a shoulder before strolling across the landing into his uncle’s room.
The demon moves with purpose, knowing exactly what it wants. Lance’s hidden stash of cash which he keeps for emergencies and his wallet. Unlike the reception and the office, both their bedrooms seem relatively intact. If the ‘thief’ had been through, they hadn’t done much to disturb anything. Maybe, if Arthur could find the motivation to care, the inconsistency would be interesting or cause for investigation. He doesn’t care.
The demon frisks the room, mentally tallying up the cash it finds. While it counts the money, Arthur’s attention is drawn to the crumpled up photo, the corner of which is poking out from Lance’s wallet. It’s of him and his uncle standing before a beat-up van. His van. This photo was taken on his eighteenth birthday. The van had been a gift. Numbly, he watches.
The demon flips through Lance’s assorted business cards in loose motions, pulling out the photo alongside them. Money is left in the wallet, and anything deemed unimportant is dropped to the floor.
‘Wait,’ Arthur objects suddenly when they come to the photo.
“Hmm?” The demon hums, continuing to sort.
‘Keep it…please,”
A pause. “Keep what? This?”
Their vision centres on the photo. The demon pinches a corner, pulling it free, scanning it with minor interest.
‘Yeah,’ Weird how quiet he sounds, considering he isn’t actually speaking out loud.
Humour and mild exasperation follow.
“Sentiment. Thought we’d decided not to get too attached to things.”
Arthur’s not really game for another round of verbal bashing and beratement, so he doesn’t bother responding. He really wants the photo. He wants it so badly it's painful, but he’s not going to beg. Not for something like this. Some of his longings must be filtering through because the demon roles its eyes in an exaggerated movement.
“You know what? Sure. Whatever,” It shoves the photo back into the wallet, flipping it shut and shoving it into their back pocket, “We’ll keep it. Don’t say I never did anything nice though.”
Arthur reframes from voicing his opinion-nice what a joke- too relieved about having something of his Uncle’s. A reminder.
The relief doesn’t last long.
“Speaking of sentiment. I think it’s time we go kill Lewis’s cute little family,” A fist pump and they head down out to the stairs. Fear, frustration and panic, quickly case away all other emotion. It’s his Uncle all over again. Not again. Maybe he shouldn’t have asked for the photo. No. Arthur’s sure it wouldn’t have mattered…
‘I can’t help that I care,’ He whispers miserably, a small part of him wishing desperately that he didn’t and hating himself for it.
“Oh, I know.” They walk back out the door, slamming it shut, heading towards the van. The gravel crunches. The landscape is almost black, the invisible sun having finished setting.
“Say bye…we’re not coming back to this dump.”
Gusts of wind rip at the newly acquired jacket.
‘…’
“Oh, right. Haha, you can’t speak. Well, it’s the thought that counts.”
.

Secret Santa
Tumblr media
Summary: The reader is participating in the SPN cast & crew Secret Santa exchange for the first time when she ends up drawing Jensen’s name...
Pairing: Jensen x reader
Word Count: 4,400ish
Warnings: none
A/N: Written for a friend :) Enjoy!...
You yawned as you rested your head in your hand, watching the camera reset back into position, Jensen smiling from the other side of the table in the bunker set.
“What are you looking at goof?” you asked, smiling back at him.
“Uh, it’s the first day back from Thanksgiving break,” he said, still wearing that big charming smile.
“Yes, because we’re all overjoyed to be working a 12 hour day after having the past week off,” you teased.
“Oh, I forgot. You’re a rookie,” he teased right back.
“Rookie mistake?” asked your A camera operator.
“Rookie mistake,” said Jensen with a tsk.
“Rookie mistake, Y/L/N? I thought we knew you better than that by now,” said your B camera operator before the small crew in the bunker library was all sharing giggles.
“I hate working with all of you,” you said, biting your bottom lip when they started to laugh. “Come on, one more take and we all get to go home.”
“Rookie mistake,” said the boom guy, your jaw dropping.
“Oh, come on, Y/N. Even I know-” said Alex before Jensen held up a hand.
“Ah, ah. Don’t be spoiling nothing for the rookie, pup,” said Jensen with a smirk.
“If it makes you feel any better, I was rookie last year,” said Alex. “Also, I am so calling you old man from now on.”
“Old man can kick your ass, pup,” said Jensen. Alex opened his mouth but realized Jensen probably very well could. “Besides, let’s not ruin the surprise, hm?”
“You are such a tease. Every last one of you,” you said, pointing at them all.
“Duh. You knew what you signed up for in the spring,” said Jensen, getting a waving finger. “Yeah, yeah. Come on rookie and pup, let’s finish this up so we can get to the good stuff.”
You heard a knock at your trailer door as you finished packing up your bag to go home, slinging it over your shoulders before you pulled the door open.
“Hi,” said Jensen, standing there with a tired but friendly smile. “Heading home?”
“After the staff meeting. I don’t feel like we’ve ever gotten one at the end of a day. Is this normal?” you asked, grabbing your phone and car keys, locking up your trailer after yourself.
“It’s nothing to worry about. It’s a fun thing we do for the holidays around here is all,” he said. “I...the rookie thing wasn’t bothering you today, was it? I know we can take that stuff a bit far sometimes.”
“No,” you said, bumping his shoulder, giving him a smile. “I’m just a bit tired.”
“Tired? We just had a week off,” he said, adjusting his own backpack as you walked.
“My break wasn’t awesome. You know how family can be,” you said.
“Not particularly. My family’s always gotten along, even if we all are a bit weird and dorky,” he said. “I realize why you sounded so off in our phone calls now though.”
“I traveled all the way to Maine to deal with...sorry. We’re going to do something fun you said?” you asked.
“Yeah,” he said, throwing an arm over your shoulders. “Rookie.”
“Okay, this is technically my second season on the show so-”
“Technically it’s your first full season on the show. Guest starring end of last season don’t count. Rookie,” he teased.
“You’ll pay for that, Ackles,” you said, booping him on the nose.
“Oh will I, Y/L/N?” he said, moving his arm around to pull you in front of him, starting to give you a noogie.
“Jensen. Jensen Ross Ackles! You are at your place of work, young man!” you said, Jared snorting as you watched him walk past.
“This is the most professional he’s ever acted,” said Jared, squishing your cheeks together before he headed towards set, Jensen chuckling as he helped get most of your hair out of your face.
“Boys,” you said, grabbing Jensen’s arm when he almost tripped over a set of cables running on the ground. “Careful, Jay. It’s your turn to buy dinner.”
“Ah, I see why you keep me around,” he said, righting himself, walking a little more slowly across the lot over to the bunker set. You yawned and rocked back on your heels, ready for some dinner in Jensen’s apartment and followed by a hot soaking bath in your own before bed.
A good chunk of the cast and crew was there, everyone lining up and jotting something down on slips of paper before they tossed them in a big basket.
“Write your name down,” said Jensen when you got up there. You did as told, placing it in the basket and moving aside, the line finishing up quickly after you. Someone turned a big handle on the basket and the paper jumbled together, mixing it all up.
“Alright, ladies and gentlemen. The 2018 Supernatural Secret Santa has the same rules as last year. $25 dollar limit. Only one secret santa per person. Gift exchange will take place on the last day of filming this year, right before the winter break. Any questions, please contact Nina, one of our lovely costume designers or myself as we are heading up the exchange this year. Does anyone have any questions?” asked Chad. “No? Alright. Step up and pick a name. If you draw your own name, stick it back in and draw again. Alright let’s go. I got a Buffalo Bills game to get home to.”
“He’s a fan of the Bills?” you whispered to Jensen. “Seriously?”
“Take pity on him. He’s Canadian,” whispered Jensen. It took a minute to get the line going again but once it was, people were out of there, saying goodnight to each other once they got their names.
Jensen shoved his hand inside and quickly glanced at the paper he’d grabbed before shoving it in his pocket. He stepped out of the way, waiting for you. You were glad you were tired because you were pretty sure your face would have shown who you’d gotten.
Jensen Ackles
You folded the paper up and put it in your jeans, Jensen smiling when you caught up with him.
“Get someone good?” he asked. You whipped your head up, giving him a smile.
“Mhm,” you said. “You?”
“Yup,” he said, stealing your car keys out of your hand. “I drive, you run in and pick it up on the way home?”
“Did you order yet?” you asked.
“Just did,” he said, twirling your keys around. You passed Cliff and Jared on the way to your car, Jensen saying he was riding home with you. Occasionally he did get a ride in with you and sometimes he even convinced you to come in with him if you were on the same shooting schedule for the day. He didn’t often drive for you though and you wondered what was on his mind.
“Hey, Jen,” you said once your seatbelt was on. “Everything alright?”
“Yeah,” he said with a smile. You nodded, Jensen sighing.
“Just going home for the holidays...it can be a bit lonely, you know?” he said. “My siblings all have spouses and families and I’m the one crashing in my childhood bedroom by myself having my parents convince me I’m not a lost cause.”
“You know what you need right now?” you said, Jensen turning in his seat. You reached your hand out and traced a finger under his jaw, Jensen staring to laugh as you tickled him.
“Y/N, Y/N, I need to drive!” he laughed, squirming away until you finally relented. “I’m not even ticklish there.”
“Sure, you’re not,” you teased, scratching his jaw as Jensen chuckled. “I wanted to see a smile on that face of yours.”
“You always make me feel better when I’m down,” he said, smiling at you before suddenly turning away. “We should head out.”
After dinner at Jensen’s you headed down a few floors and to the other side of the building to your place, settling into your soaking tub, playing with some bubbles while you tried to think of what to possibly get him. A gift card was easy since you knew where he shopped and ate out. But it was impersonal and Jensen was your best friend. You were planning on getting him an actual Christmas present, had gotten it already, a pair of tickets to some pro golf thing where he could basically swing around clubs with the pros for a few hours and get some pointers. It sounded expensive but once you factored in the family discount your mom had swung for you with her friend, it was practically no cost at all.
You wanted to do something like that again, something he’d really love. All you kept thinking of though was stupid crap like an extra phone charger or heaven forbid, socks. You jolted up in the tub when your phone rang, quickly climbing out and grabbing it without looking.
“Hello?” you asked.
“Hey, Y/N,” said Jensen. “Just me.”
“Oh, hey. What’s up?” you asked, throwing on your robe and undoing the tub. You walked into your bedroom, frowning at the clock. “I thought you were heading to bed early, catch up on some sleep.”
“Um...I did. I...shit, forget about it,” he said. “Night.”
He hung up and you pouted, calling him back but getting no answer.
“Ackles…” you grunted. You threw on your pajamas and grabbed your key, heading up to his apartment, knocking more than a few times before it opened up.
“What-”
“You call me like that and then don’t answer? Of course I’m coming to check on you,” you said, walking past him into the dark apartment. He sighed and closed the door, rubbing his eyes. His hair was tousled, shirt a little off. “You were asleep before.”
“Yeah. I was just about back asleep too when you showed up,” he said.
“Well why’d you call me?” you asked.
“I had a nightmare, alright?” he said, rubbing one of his arm, pulling at the sleeve of his t shirt. “I just...I’m fine. I just wanted to hear your voice for a second. I shouldn’t have bothered you.”
“Do you want me to stay over tonight?” you asked.
“What? No, seriously, Y/N. I’m fine. I shouldn’t-”
“Jensen,” you said. “There was totally that time I freaked out over a noise and you spent the night in my apartment because I was scared.”
“That was different,” he said.
“What? Boys aren’t allowed to be scared?” you said.
“No, we are. I just…” he said, scratching his head. “You aren’t leaving, are you.”
“You have a guest room. I’ll crash here, okay? If you have another nightmare, I’ll come wake you up,” you said. He opened his mouth but you put your hands on your hips, Jensen dropping his head. You stepped over and gave him a hug, Jensen tensing at the contact for a moment before he relaxed and returned it.
“You were in an accident. I couldn’t save you,” he said quietly. You looked up at him, Jensen staring across the room, avoiding your gaze. “The nightmare.”
“I’m right here, Jay,” you said, giving him a smile, wrapping your arms even tighter before you leaned back, picking him up off the ground, and let out a whoof. “You are heavier than I thought you’d be.”
“Well put me down, goofball,” he chuckled. You shook your head and slowly waddled down the hall to his bed, Jensen laughing his ass off by the time you got there.
“We are so doing a piggyback ride next time,” you said, bonking his nose when he was set down, throwing his covers back on him, a smile on his face. “Night, Jens.”
“Night, Y/N.”
You woke up to Jensen shaking you awake, eyes flashing open.
“Morning,” he said sleepily. “You got a eight am call time. Better get downstairs if you want to be on time.”
“Yeah, thanks,” you said, stretching for a second before you rolled out of bed and stepped into your slippers. “Sleep okay?”
“Yeah,” he said quietly, a bit of color in cheeks that was barely noticeable. “Thanks for last night. I mean, making sure I was okay.”
“S’never a problem, Jensen,” you said, yawning as you walked down the hall. “I’ll see you at work later.”
“Later, Y/L/N.”
You were taking a break between scenes on Tuesday, heading back to your trailer when you saw an envelope taped to the outside of it.
Your Secret Santa
“Oh, this’ll be good,” you said, ripping it off and heading into your trailer. You tore it open, pulling open a small typed out piece of paper.
Y/N,
I’m your Secret Santa. I know you’re new to set this year but I feel like you’ve been having a good time working with us all. We certainly enjoy working with you. You’re not only very talented, but kind and humble as well, something you may take for granted but I don’t, especially in this industry. Your personality has been refreshing around here and quite honestly, I look forward to the times I get to work with the cute new girl. Here’s to figuring out the perfect gift for you.
From,
Your SS
“Oh my…” you said, a knock at your door making you shriek. You heard Jensen chuckle as you called him in, Jensen laughing when you pursed your lips at him. “You startled me.”
“Scaredy cat,” he said, hopping up on your kitchen counter. “What’s that?”
“This? This is a letter from my secret santa,” you said, handing it to him.
“Letters aren’t a part of the exchange,” said Jensen reading it over. “Oh. Sounds like your secret santa has a bit of a crush on you.”
“Well that’s obvious,” you said, taking the letter back.
“Are you freaked out or…” said Jensen.
“No, no. I’m surprised is all,” you said. “What are the odds that someone who has a crush on me would be my secret santa?”
“About one in two fifty?” teased Jensen. You rolled your eyes and took a seat. “You think someone’s messing with you?”
“Jared does like to prank me,” you said.
“Yes but Jared doesn’t pull pranks like that. You got an admirer out there somewhere,” said Jensen with a smile. “It’s cute.”
“Yeah. I really need to figure out my own secret santa though before I can investigating who has a crush,” you said.
“Need any help?” asked Jensen. You laughed, shaking your head.
“No, no. I can handle it. Want to run some lines?” you asked.
“Sure thing, rookie.”
Friday afternoon you got back to your chair at the end of your filming day, cocking your head at the green envelope sat in it.
“Oh, did the secret santa strike again?” teased Jared, laughing as you whacked his arm.
“Another letter? Lucky you,” joined in Jensen, collecting his things before he ran back to his trailer to change for another scene. You shoved your phone in your pocket and headed back for your own, tearing open the letter while you walked.
Y/N,
I hope my first letter didn’t startle you. I know you’re the kind of girl that’ll put on a tough face so I really do hope I didn’t cross a line. You’ll find out who I am soon. I probably shouldn’t have mentioned that whole you’re cute thing since now you’re going to know exactly who has a crush on you and I won’t be able to deny it.
Forgetting my current embarrassment and most likely future rejection for the time being, I think I’ve found the perfect gift for you.
Have a great weekend, Y/N. You absolutely killed it this week.
From,
Your SS
“Wow,” said Jared. You jumped when you felt him right behind you, reading over your shoulder. “Poor dude thinks he’s already screwed it up just by calling you cute.”
“Jare, privacy?” you asked, folding up the sheet and shoving it back in the envelope.
“Oh, alright,” said Jared with a smirk. “I’ll just go on my merry old way then…”
“You know who it is, don’t you,” you said.
“Uh, duh,” said Jared.
“Want to help a girl out then?” you asked.
“Nope. I was given full permission to reveal I know who he is though because quote, ‘he doesn’t want to seem like a weirdo creeper’ to you,” said Jared. “Trust me, he’s the exact opposite.”
“Well you can tell him it’s fine. It’s cute, like someone leaving notes in my locker in school,” you said.
“I’ll be sure to pass it along,” said Jared, ruffling your head. “I’m heading home for the weekend. See you on Monday?”
“Have a safe flight,” you said, giving him a quick hug. Back in your trailer you worked on answering a few emails before you wound up hopelessly searching for Jensen’s perfect present.
Your secret santa had a crush on you and he’d easily found one for you. How come you couldn’t do the same for Jensen? Maybe you weren’t ready to admit out loud to him that you had a crush but deep down you knew that’s what it was. It was simple though, to write it off as having a good time with your best friend and nothing more. At least that’s what you’d been telling yourself despite all of the obvious signs.
Plus with this new crush out there, maybe this was exactly what you needed. It was probably one of the new guys this year, maybe Nate in production. He’d always been a little flirty in the breakfast line in the morning, sometimes showing you around the future set builds. He knew Jared pretty well and he was sweet.
“Rookie!” you heard, a loud banging on your door. You shut your computer and pushed away the thought, opening the door to find Jensen standing there with a cocked head. “What are you still doing here?”
“I was doing some work,” you said.
“It’s like after eight, Y/N,” he said. You closed your eyes, leaning your head back as the time had gotten away from you. “You work too hard, I swear.”
“I got distracted with thinking of the secret santa stuff,” you said, rushing back inside and flipping off the lights, grabbing your bag and locking up.
“Want me to walk you to your car?” he asked.
“Nah, I’m fine. You had a long day,” you said, nodding over to where his car was waiting with Cliff. “Night.”
“Night,” he said quietly. You shoved your hands in your pockets as you started to walk, a quick rush of footsteps behind you before Jensen was at your side again. “Don’t tell me you’re fine. I know you don’t like walking alone to your car at night so I’m walking you, alright?”
“Alright. I didn’t know Cliff was teaching you to be a bodyguard, Ackles,” you said.
“Hey. I got scared the other night and you were there for me. I got your back too,” he said. “Besides, you never know what hooligan’s you’ll run into on the trek to the parking lot.”
“Oh yes. Good thing I got Dean Winchester to kick some ass for me if I need it,” you said, bumping his arm. “You heading home this weekend?”
“Yeah. I got a flight at midnight,” he said with a yawn. “Be back in Texas just before six. You doing anything fun this weekend?”
“Nope,” you said with a laugh. “Unless you count watching TV and cleaning my apartment fun.”
“Maybe you can get your secret santa shopping out of the way,” said Jensen. “I’m already done with mine.”
“Seriously? How?” you asked.
“I didn’t overthink it like a certain someone,” he said. “Just get them a gift card and be done with it.”
“Maybe. I’m sure I’ll figure something out soon.”
Two Weeks Later
It was Thursday morning, the last day on set before the break started. You’d come up with absolutely crap all for Jensen, hoping to run out at lunch and find something before you gave him his backup present, a gift card for his favorite restaurant.
Your secret santa had left you a few more sweet notes over the past weeks and you decided that, festering feelings for Jensen aside, you were going to give your secret santa at least one date to see how things went.
“Hey, Y/N,” said Jensen, walking into your trailer as you were heading out to the store at lunch. It was strange of him not to knock and the look on his face worried you more than getting him the wrong present. “Do you got a second? I need to talk to you.”
“Sure,” you said, waving him to take a seat on your couch. “You okay, Jay?”
“I...here,” he said, pulling a card out of his pocket and shoving it in your hands. It was a christmas card, one that put a smile on your face.
“Thanks, Jensen,” you said, opening it, a plane ticket falling out. You caught it in your lap, glancing at him but he was staring at his own.
Y/N,
If you haven’t figured it out by now, it’s me. Jensen. I’m your secret santa. I didn’t plan for this to happen and I was a bit shocked when I pulled out your name but I thought, hey it’s a great opportunity. I knew immediately what I wanted to give you. A plane ticket to come visit me in Austin over break. I hated when we didn’t see each other that much over summer hiatus and I thought maybe you’d want to spend a week with me.
But you’d figure out who your secret santa was if I did that. But it was what I really wanted to give you and you don’t have to come down if you don’t want. So I figured once you would eventually find out who I was, why not man up and tell you about my obnoxious school boy crush on my best friend? I know you’re fully aware that I hardly ever make the first move, but it seemed easier to say I think you’re amazing in a letter somehow. The funny thing is, all those things I’ve said in these letters, I’ve told you in person before. But I don’t think you believed me. I really do believe you’re one of the most incredible people I’ve ever known. Not too many people are like you, have a goodness in them and a genuine care for other people. You take care of me, Y/N. I can be a weird goofball in front of you and it feels so comfortable. I’ve never felt that with another person outside my family, definitely not in another person that I have certain feelings for.
I hope you do decide to come visit and you’ll give me a chance.
J
You lifted your head when you finished reading, tucking the ticket back inside the card. You stood up and grabbed the envelope meant for Jensen on your table, spinning back around to crash straight into his chest, Jensen trying to make a fast break for it.
“Hey,” you said, holding up your hands, giving him the card. “I was your secret santa too.”
“Oh,” he said, opening the card. “It’s for the steakhouse. Thanks.”
“Yeah,” you said, blocking his path out of the trailer. “I was thinking maybe tonight...we could go use that gift card on a date where you can tell me all about the stuff we’re going to do in Austin.”
“Really?” he said, everything so much lighter about him as you stepped forward and wrapped your arms around him.
“Yeah. See...I’ve had this crush on my bestie for a while too. But then this secret santa guy was sending me these sweet letters and I swore I was going to go on a date with him because he was too good to be true. But it makes perfect sense now considering it was you,” you said.
“You’re really going to come visit me?” he asked. You nodded, leaning up and pecking a kiss on his cheek.
“Sure am,” you said. Jensen smiled so hard his cheeks had to be hurting. He glanced down at your lips once before pressing his to them, landing a gentle kiss.
“Y/N you want-” said Jared, bursting in through the door, pausing on the step as you and Jensen turned to look at him. “Well. Looks like you two kids are having some fun so I’ll just grab lunch on my own.”
“You knew the whole time,” you said.
“Duh,” said Jared. “I can’t believe she never figured it out.”
“Figured it out when it mattered,” said Jensen. Jared hummed and gave you both a smile, leaving you be. “So...what time should I pick you up for our date?”
“Eight sound good to you, secret santa?” you teased.
“Sounds perfect, Y/N.”

My Money Snapshot
[Inspired by Corporette]
Location: Ohio, small college town
Age: 29
Occupation: PhD candidate (English)/half-time instructor
Income: $16,000 before deductions
Net worth: $588 (I’m crying)
Current Debt: $12,844
Living situation: Renting with a roommate
Money Philosophy:
I grew up in the “working poor” category. My parents are divorced and my father never contributed much financially. Mom made around $21,000 per year at work and she cleaned houses “under the table” to supplement that. Somehow, we never went hungry, what we ate was relatively fresh and healthy, and she managed to put two of us through Catholic schools for a total of 14 years. I know now that mom is still paying some of those loans and credit card debts and that part of her strategy included not contributing more than the 3% that her employer matched in her 401k. Every time I complain about the financial stress I feel at my salary level, I have to remind myself how comparatively unstressful my financial life is.
I’ve always been poor and I always knew that graduate school/academia is not a lucrative career. I tell myself that if I can make things work at this pay grade, then I’m ready for just about anything. My main strategy is to have a budget, stay in the budget, and save every bit that I can.
Monthly budget
$1000-1100 for the necessities each month. Monthly spending on eating out, entertainment, shopping and other categories varies widely. I also won’t lie... dating someone who makes 4x more money than me helps... I’m fairly frugal on all of these fronts: I buy most of my clothes second hand and I tend to shop seasonally. Spikes in spending occur around the winter holidays when I’m buying gifts and when I am doing traveling. And I also have totally weak, impulsive moments - like the $3 soap sales at Bath & Body works, or that time I spent $110 on bras and underwear on a whim. Anyway:
Rent: $272.50/month
Other living expenses: $130-170/month (electric, internet, phone, renter’s insurance - lower in summer, higher in winter)
Transportation: $332/month (gas, insurance, car payment)
Healthcare: $162/month (health+dental insurance, no vision coverage)
Groceries: $120-150/month ($30/week)
Debt Picture
Student loan: $2000
Car loan: $10,488
I’m a career student & my motto for all the years I’ve been in school has been “follow the money.” I went to college on very hefty scholarships and I only had to take out the $2000 loan to cover housing costs during my first year. For the subsequent three years, I was an RA, so I never had to take loans again. I applied to graduate programs based on the research fit, and when I got my offers, money weighed heavily in the decision. I would have loved to live in Boston as a wee 22-year old, but I wasn’t about to take out loans for a year’s worth of tuition and the living expenses. And to get a PhD while living in Minneapolis, my very favorite city in the US? It would have been such a dream, but for the quite steep difference in stipends and the significant disparity in cost of living compared with Ohio. My only regret on this front is that I haven’t started paying back my tiny student loan. I’ve been able to defer it since I’m in graduate school, which was a great idea when I was a master’s student who didn’t know the first thing about budgeting. But if I had just paid $25/month from the start of grad school the balance would be $0 about the same time I graduate from this PhD program this August. Instead, I’ll be scrambling to pay off the whole balance before my 6 month grace period ends.
The car loan is less than a year old. I finally broke down and bought a new (by which I mean used) car last summer after really pushing it with the car my parents had bought me in high school. Repairing that car put me into credit card debt more than once and I was getting so stressed about it. It was time. I have a very good credit score, so I qualified for a nice loan rate with my credit union, and to get a better rate I got my mom to co-sign my loan. It’s a popular rental fleet model so there were tons of them on the market, but average miles were high - so when I saw one that was two years old with only a years worth of miles on it at $1000 less than the average price for that make, model, and year, I jumped on it. My payments are $231/month on the 5-year plan. Currently, I’m paying that minimum, but I plan to escalate my payments as my income goes up (I’m on the academic job market now, pray for me). I folded this car payment into my existing budget by giving up solo-living and finding a roommate. When I had my own apartment, very spacious with a huge kitchen and tons of windows/natural light, I was paying about $585 for monthly rent. I hate living with people, but I hated the idea of being trapped in this college town without a car even more - one of my other mantras is “you can do anything for a year.”
A note on credit cards: I love them. I’m one of those responsible people that charges everything and pays the balance like clockwork every month. This is the only way to make sure you’re actually taking advantage of the cash back/reward perks! Currently, I’m using Capital One’s Venture card and stockpiling airline miles for travel (it has a 40,000 mile sign-on bonus). If you’re good for it, I also recommend one card with a great balance transfer program. For me, when I get into an emergency situation, it makes me feel like I have options. It’s been about 4 years since I’ve had to use my balance transfer card to cover costs ($1400 in car repairs, summer 2015), but at my level, I can’t afford to not have back up plans.
Savings and Investments
$5,517 Cash
$7,861 Roth IRA + employer mandated retirement account
Retirement: The biggest financial mistake I've made in grad school is that I did not opt into the retirement account offered by the university when I started my M.A. in 2012. When they ask me that “what I wish I had known before I went to grad school” question, this is near the top of the list. I did, eventually, open a Roth IRA and slowly I started to build something. This year, when my graduate funding dried up and they made me a “half-time instructor” the retirement account for public school teachers was mandatory and the contributions are high: 14% of every pay check (annoying, yes, but on the flipside, there is an equally high employer match). While I’m contributing to this, I’ve paused my contributions to the IRA. I’ll roll this money over, either into the IRA or into another state/employer retirement fund when I move on from here.
Personal savings: I strive for a minimum of $100 per month and frequently do a little more, but each month is different and I consider it a win if I break even. Through most of grad school, I’ve taken on “second jobs” to bolster what I can save (and boost my resume). Both jobs have been through the university, so they limit me to five hours a week. When I max them out, this can be an extra $200-250 each month.
I took up a new savings challenge this academic year to build on my “play money” savings account (a high yield savings account which my bank labels a “goal setter” account). The challenge involves tallying the “total savings” printed on my receipts each month (i.e. when the grocery store is like “you saved $6″ because of sales and coupons). So, At the end of the month, I put that running total into my goal setter account. Sometimes the total savings are like $26, but others its as much as $171. It’s an interesting challenge because it encourages me to do tedious things, like scroll through all the digital coupons on the grocery store app; but at the same time, I know that the higher that number is usually coincides with a lot of shopping which encourages some self-regulation.
I initially set my goal at $2500 when I opened the goal setter account in 2014. When I had to dip into the account in April 2018 to pay $930 in car repairs, I finally set plans in motion to buy my car. Since I bought used, I only put 10% down on the car (just over $1200). When I sold my old car for $1000, I put that money right back into the account to start saving for new things...
What I’m saving for now:
travel: to celebrate finally finishing this PhD, I’m hoping to pull off a trip to Europe. Later this year, I’m also turning 30 around the same time that one of my regular professional conferences is meeting in Hawaii. If I can do one or both in the next year, that’d be grand. (As I mentioned, I'm saving up airline miles with my credit card program, too!)
a multicooker: think InstantPot...but more expensive because my dreams all revolve around small appliances that match my stand mixer.
What I do to be frugal...
I’ve been frugal my whole life, but a couple of major habits I’ve formed include:
Meal planning and home cooking (read my guide to meal prep here). The money part of that means planning what I eat around maximizing the ingredients I have to buy. I plan meals that use the same ingredients so I’m not spending on an entire bunch of celery and then throwing out 75% of it. Routinization also helps, so my grocery lists stay about the same week to week and the bill relatively predictable - for example, I eat avocado egg salad almost every day for lunch. I know, avocados are not cheap, but I also believe in spending on the things that nourish you––literally and “spiritually.” Roxane Gay once said that she never bought avocados or blueberries when she was a “poor grad student.” Once she started making money, she realized she would buy them because she could afford them, but she also threw them out all the time because she didn’t plan her meals right to actually eat them. The point is, buy the foods that you like/feel good about and build habits around them. It’s not wasted money. That said, I won’t pay more than $1.25 for an avocado!
Second hand clothes shopping, especially for my business casual (it’s amazing what people donate to the Goodwill, barely worn!)

8/25/19 - 9/2/19
Last Sunday, we were invited to one housemate's boss's enormous and lush country home, which had a great pool. Some of the other Mercy volunteers were there as well and were super friendly. The way to the estate was pretty hilarious. First, our car stalled out, and then the supervisor gave us the most confusing directions ever. She initially sped off super far away on the highway even though she knew we were following her. Then she called us and said she was actually in back of us on the highway and that we should pull off at the nearest exit. Once we exited the highway, she called us and said she was actually in front of us the entire time, so we had to get back on the freeway. We originally really wanted to put the address into the GPS in case we got lost while following her (which we did), but she insisted that the address wouldn't show up on the GPS which was pretty sketchy. After getting off the highway a second time and following her down a dirt path, I joked about how she might be luring us to a killing field. This woman apparently bought her sprawling estate with all her divorce settlement money and paid for the property in cash, which I thought was pretty impressive. One of her employees who was a former member of the addiction treatment program joined us and had an "IAmSober" license plate, which I thought was funny.
I've decided to create an Instagram account (@everyday_mustardseed) with pictures uploaded every day that I work there. Work has been pretty nuts lately. Firstly, we doubled the student population overnight (originally 10, now 21 kids)-largest ever has been either 40-60 kids at once. I finally got to meet the LCSW who works there full-time, and she seems pretty nice and helpful for resolving all the trauma in the children. One day in particular was kind of grueling because a parent was nearly an hour late to pick up their kids. We have a protocol at the school that if a child/children are not picked up within a certain amount of time after school ends, then we have to legally call the police, which I really dreaded doing. Thankfully, the parents showed up after some time, which was a godsend because I could only watch so many old episodes of Wishbone with them while they repeatedly asked me where their mom was. I can't imagine the abandonment issues that these kids experience as compared to how I felt whenever my mom was even a fraction of a minute late when I was a kid (and she gave me no reason to feel that way). I've also assisted in compiling files for the intake forms, and I have been taking pictures of the kids for their files which has been surprisingly cute and wholesome. One little girl, however, tried to throw a gang sign in her picture, but I (very gently) grabbed her hand to hide it before the picture was taken.
I've noticed some very peculiar behaviors in the children at the school. For example, many sibling groups act very close and are almost at odds with the other sibling groups, as if they were engaged in turf wars, but I think this is another coping mechanism. I feel so sorry for the children who have no siblings since they are pretty much alone and unprotected from the other children's bullying. Many of the kids have expressed not wanting to leave at dismissal and feeling sad when the weekend approaches and school isn't in session. One of my co-workers has a theory about the children's behavior. He thinks that the most well-behaved children are the ones who are the most chronically homeless and more used to it due to them being so grateful for everything they are given, whereas the unrulier kids are newly exposed to the homeless lifestyle which is why they are acting out. One of the teachers spoke about how the more chronically homeless kids are "starved for knowledge" and relish any learning in the classroom.
A second car driven by a housemate has bitten the dust (the one that stalled on the way to the supervisor's estate on Sunday). It's unfortunate because this means we are even more restricted in terms of going places and visiting other JVC houses.
A fun community night activity took place this week, where we all shared our love language, Myers-Briggs personalities, enneagram numbers, and zodiac sign. My love language is acts of service/devotion, I am INFJ, Type 1, and a Gemini-Cancer cusp. So far, I have learned that there are the following zodiac signs in the house: Gemini-Cancer cusp, Pisces, Sagittarius, Taurus, Scorpio, Libra, and Aquarius. The personality types are: 1 INFJ (Advocate), 1 ENTJ (Commander), 2 ENFJ (Protagonist), and 3 ENFP (campaigner). The most common love language are: 5 quality time, 5 words of affirmation, 3 acts of service/devotion, 1 physical touch, and 1 gifts.
A little bit of scandalous news-apparently the JVC stipend is and has been too small for some time. It is a well-known secret in JVC history that many volunteers have side-jobs to make more money than just the monthly stipend. I remember hearing that my dad had a $100 stipend each month, which is kind of strange since that means the stipend has not been adjusted for inflation (aka it's much more expensive to exist today compared to back then). Additionally, California is notoriously expensive, so I'm wondering if the JVC should have made financial changes for stipends depending on how expensive the cost of living is in each city (for example, $100 a month would get you much further in Scranton than Sacramento). Furthermore, apparently the Jesuit Volunteer Corps of Northwest gives their volunteers $300 each month and has much better housing accommodations.
This weekend, we drove to Oakland/Berkeley, California, and stayed over at the JV house there. The party on Saturday was 60's/70's theme, and a couple other JV houses from around California came to stay over as well. We got there via car from a former JV and another car that a co-worker rented for us. Then, all together, we traveled to Baker Beach in San Francisco, where we sat on the beach, and I even saw a dead sea lion on the beach, which was understandably gross. P.S. part of the beach was nude which was super unexpected. When we were getting the alcohol for the party at the JV house, we were walking out of CVS, and a bunch of the worst-disguised undercover cops were waiting to card us again on the side walk. Gladly, we handed over our IDs, and one cop even asked one of us who the governor of Wisconsin is (none of us knew). When they were looking at my ID, the cop turned to me and asked suddenly "What year did you graduate high school?" and I immediately answered "2014". He gave it back to me reluctantly, and much to the horror of my housemates, I asked him, "Are you sure you don't want to check it again? I could be lying." That Saturday night, a couple of us went to Taco Bell after the party, and one of my housemates cracked a beer open in line there, and the poor cashier had to ask him to finish it, so he very unapologetically chugged it in front of everyone inside the Taco Bell, which was hilarious. On Friday, we attended a baseball game between the Sacramento Wild Cats and whatever the team name is of San Diego. We won, and there were fireworks, but more importantly, I got to drive an electric car for the first time ever (a fiat)!
Lastly, a funny story that I was told this week during community dinner involved a man who told everyone that he was married to a key chain. Since the person who told the story works at a mental health facility, they were not too disturbed by this fact, but they were surprised when eventually the man who was apparently married to a key chain brought in an actual wife one day (who or what is the key chain???)! Another funny occurrence happened to my housemate who works in a kindergarten classroom. They were in the middle of a lesson, and one child raised their hand. The teacher called on them, and they said simply, "My birthday was on Friday." The teacher replied, "I know. We celebrated." She waited a moment and then said, "Anything else?" and the student said "No." I laugh every time I think of this story.
Peace and blessings,
MK

Day 24 and 25
71km to go
Day 24, 25 and 26: Trikala>Lamia>Thiva
Thiva: 18:43
The sun came out! Three days ago, I gifted my overshoes to Kastoria. Two days, Trikala’s Airbnb owner now has a beautiful pair of threadbare, elasticity long gone Castelli leg warmers, and has no idea of the significance of this gift. This is a cyclist’s version of a striptease...which can also and was performed on the move in the last few days: the jacket, the arm warmers and then a few miles later, the leg warmers.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It was the first morning I left without having consider any layering choices. I felt an awful lot lighter after being charged €8 for two cappuccinos, and I found a bike shop who pumped up my tyres and sent me on my way with a new inner tube after my puncture set bounced off somewhere in the previous day’s ride. Maybe Hades horrors got THAT close. Enjoy, you savages!
Tumblr media
Greece has really surprised me, in a multitude of ways. Firstly, it’s people. I know a few Greeks. In fact, Dmitri who is married to Katherine and currently looking after my house and dog, Nyla (how dogs should be) is from Corinthe. He and the other Greek seem lovely. However, here, if I’m totally honest, on the whole, appear to have a serious attitude problem or a chip on their shoulder. You’ll get what you need from them, but blimey, they won’t make it easy! And on the whole, everything they do for you seems to be a massive chore; they tend to look decidedly pissed off! Yet, despite this, I quite like them. It’s like they don’t really give a hoot what anyone else thinks about them. You’ll do things their way or you’ll go without. Is it because of the long and deep Greek tragedies and history that floods its many mountains and plains? I thought that Italians were expressive, which they are. But Greeks don’t want to be expressive but if you push them, you’ll probably see the wrong kind of expressive!
Tumblr media
Take for example, the owner of the hotel I’m in right now. The pool is not in use, it’s in the middle of nowhere and whilst it’s clean, so is a travelodge or Premier Inn, but none typically have atmosphere and are extremely functional. Bed, check in, restaurant and bar if you’re lucky. As I rested for the first time by the lovely looking pool on this trip, the owner came over to speak to me declaring his position as if I should congratulate him. And then proceeded to try and get me to cancel my booking.com booking, drive up to the cash point with him in order to pay cash and get a €10 discount for the most expensive and overpriced hotel for the whole 25 days to date. After telling him I’d think it over for while, and the hassle of getting in a car to go to get cash, and concerned that cancelling the booking after the cancellation period had passed with the possibility of double payment and no recourse, I told him it’s not worth it. I’d also be charged a currency fee for the withdrawal (I haven’t mentioned it, but a few days ago, in supposed trusted company, I was set up and pickpocketed. That in itself was genius how it was staged. Luckily they only got away with coins from 8 different countries and my international card. But that has made the cash process a little tricky). Mr owner, who clearly thought very highly of his negotiation skills, stating Booking.com make billions, and me being a seasoned traveller must play the system all the time. Am I missing a trick here? Maybe, but after much insistence after his persistence, he got the message. But this is my experience of Greeks.
Tumblr media
Moving to the cycling. I’d been warned by said Greeks that Greek drivers were about the worst you could find. Be careful, I was warned. The roads are very busy and Greeks don’t deal with cyclists at all well. This really set me up to see Greece as a country I needed to get through to get to Athens and the end of my cross-continent adventure. The truth is I have been totally amazed. It has been, day after day, the best cycling I’ve done anywhere in Europe, including Spain and France. Not only are the drivers considerate, stop and wait at intersections for the cyclist to pass, they indicate, pull out, wait, and many toot and wave encouragement. The roads are empty, generally in great condition and all around, the scenery continuously draws you in. The culture is rich, untouched. I saw my first living snake on one road, the same road I saw many geckos between Kastoria and Trikala. The sides of the roads are dressed with millions of poppies, Aloe Vera, cacti, hemp, olive trees. I’m yet to reach Athens but I haven’t once felt unsafe due to traffic. Wild dogs, yes. I’d rather not repeat those.
Tumblr media
Both Lamia and Kastoria were gems on an unplanned route. I don’t feel like seeing Thiva as I’m full of hay fever and possibly a cold, so am uninspired. It does have an interesting past though and was an important as a city and in Greek mythology. But I’m very happy here in my apartment away from everywhere: the calm before the storm, returning to relative reality tomorrow.
I don’t know why this area for cyclists seems to be so undiscovered, but I’m so glad I made the decision to come inland. The coast will undoubtedly be much busier than this incredible, mountainous and flat landscape from Albania to Athens. I couldn’t be happier on my bike than I’ve been for the past four days.😊. The balance of vistas for this trip have been perfect: mainland, coast and now mountains. That pretty much covers it! I later hear from Mr Owner as he reluctantly demanded my card payment as he saw me sat on my balcony because he wasn’t there in the morning, that 30 Hungarian cyclists were arriving the next day. For them it’s a short flight away. They’re obviously in on this secret nirvana that is Greece.

The days have rolled by and here I am, one ride away from Athens. I’m still focused, but also excited. 71km till I pack up my bike, having dipped my feet and maybe even swum in the Aegean in the last few miles of my Odyssey...surely that is classed as a transcontinental bike ride? 😃.
Packing away my winter gear, my shorts and t-shirt for the last time, throwing away all the bits and pieces I no longer need, and counting the hours...one more sleep and Athens...

The day has arrived, and still, with only 71km to go, I’m not 100% certain I’ll make it to Athens! I guess I will believe it and relax once I walk into the hotel, and ask for my bike box. Having received an overweight charge relating to my box apparently weighing 67kg heavier than the maximum for my shipping cost (which is 27kg and having weighed it before booking, know it’s actually 19kg), I am expecting to find an adult size stowaway inside. So the very first thing I will be doing on receipt is asking a member of staff to hold my phone and video me opening it as evidence to send to UPS, who will otherwise pursue an additional £146 shipping cost. I tell you this as I don’t want you to fall into the same cunning trap.
A fellow cyclist, Steve, currently pedalling through France, shared this lovely insight with me after I’d shared the view of the Aegean Sea af Lamia’s castle. Around 10k from me, I could have by rights, pedalled over, dipped my toe in the water and got aboard the nearest train to Athens. But didn’t! Steve shared this: In Xenophon’s Anabasis when the 10,000 Greek soldiers saw the Mediterranean after there march out of Persia they shouted for joy Thálatta! Thálatta! The sea The Sea! They knew they were home.
I haven’t got that excited yet, but I’ve placed my Sainsbury’s order...Istanbul tomorrow...by plane 😊
The bells have chimed outside, I’ve eaten two cereal bars, a banana and half a pint of milk for breakfast and I will be hauling my knackered, ageing body on to the bike just one more time here, for up to 3 hours...and then it’s done...hopefully! See you in Athens 😃

Prices hasn't been actually announced yet, yet the full game unlock is $10 in the iphone Application Shop. When they launch occasionally in the autumn adhering to the Wedding anniversary Xbox One Update, Microsoft claims that Xbox Live Clubs will certainly reach out to throughout Xbox One and also Xbox on Windows 10. The firm prepares to release two or three new video games following year, and also proceed that pattern past 2017, he said. Huge Male X as well as Sigma's appearance remains in spirit being actually used to build to Mega Man X9. No, that carries out not indicate this game is actually canonical to the Huge Male X series (like some misconstrued me saying on twitter) it's simply being used to hype up that video game ultimately happening. Check out the games they've discharged and also just what kinds of games they are understood for making before meeting. Explained through its own designer, architect and video game developer Jose Sanchez, as a community structure game, it is actually a more modular, ecologically knowledgeable take on the Sim City concept, along with gamers constructing little, self-contained rooms that stabilize nature as well as facilities. http://letrain-delasante.info 've all played Tetris and enjoyed its heavyset goodness (till the items begin boiling down too rapidly and also damn long piece will not show up and also it's game over, man, GAME OVER!!!). When the Heist objectives lastly did get there in GTA Online in 2015, nevertheless, they were definitely invited by an or else frustrated neighborhood. Sliding, jet-packs and also wall-jumping are lobbed in to the mix as the game flings more and more complicated caves in your path. There have been actually a lot of launched, it's challenging to bear in mind that the LEGO games as our team now know all of them began in the Celebrity Wars world. Game Manufacturer attacks all my favorite sub-generes: romcom, buddies to much more, overprotective big brother's best buddy. Don't buy the video game if they're effortlessly affected and a certain game possesses play auto mechanics you may not be relaxed with your little one experiencing. To today this continues to be the hardest video game I have actually ever before played - I 'd often play for an entire evening without getting anywhere whatsoever. The Mirror Activity - where the male lead subtly copies every action the female lead makes, just on a small dead time. Hayley acquires drawn into the mythosphere when she is actually delivered by her grandparents to visit relatives in Ireland, who have actually devised a pastime phoned the Video game where they need to get back mythical ob The idea from the mythosphere is actually a wonderful thing, traditional of Diana Wynne Jones and full of artistic possibility. It was actually amazing to find all the major firms brought up as they tried to receive the liberties to generate different variations from the activity - I had no tip they may be sold bit-by-bit (Personal Computer civil liberties, game console civil rights, portable civil rights, etc). What's appealing is actually that Sam, COO from Obsession Games, does not know whether We Happy Few will definitely cost loan once it releases on the Windows 10 Shop for those acquiring it right now on Xbox One. Forza Horizon 3 is actually a. play anywhere title, indicating those along with Windows 10 mounted just have to obtain the game the moment. this content brings into play has actually ended up being so exact that teams have begun to make use of the activity to look for potential brand new finalizings or even to examine out the durabilities and also weaknesses of upcoming challengers. The console market still creates the bulk from its own amount of money off marketing video games on disk at $60 a stand out. THE HUNGER GAMING is a great, somewhat ruthless and also breathless read that as soon as you start you simply can't put down once more. Wonderfully made landscapes creates severe hiking much less of a chore in an activity that is actually basically Unexplored without any from the fight. Has the basic ground from a thousand path-drawing games and also wraps this around classic footie goals. Yes, there are lots of video games that let players shoot other gamers, decrease curse words and may not be typically suitable for kids to play.. The Olympic Video games were actually treat along with fantastic treatment and fortunately no lunatic tried to screw up the video games in the real world yet that shows the true standpoint. Merely purchase an activity when and also you could enjoy that on multiple displays without the demand for a batch from physical operators. Yet equally as numerous applied a nice meet, acquire their much-loved automobile, and also set out for a nation drive along with the radio on. GTA is among some activities to guarantee freedom, then provide one thing like that. In some cases, solo play only isn't everything enjoyable, and there are times our team simply desire human companionship to develop wacky memories, or even to obtain past complicated problems as well as hard managers, in our activities. To help raise money for the activity, Ora's programmers have released Possum Stamp, a mini game application on call on iOS or Android. Having every one of this all together, our team're waiting to a game that needs to be larger, deeper and also hopefully much better. Black Moon, the part two to the authentic Luigi's Mansion on the Nintendo GameCube, is an experience video game fully. Earlier, you were actually provided a complete 30 days on the Recuperation button (under Environments) where the option was available to change to an earlier improve your Personal Computer - guaranteeing that those using the free gift Windows 10 upgrade possessed a full month through which to try the new Operating System and rollback to Microsoft window 7/8.1 if they weren't delighted. Yes, featuring one of last production's best games amongst this generation's finest is actually somewhat monotonous, yet GTA V on Xbox One is too great to dismiss, with HD visuals, a longer draw proximity as well as a much faster frame-rate. Another RANT ☠️☠️
So sorry to be bothering everyone with my negativity but uh uh I feel fucked over by this shit so let me just explain more.
One of my favorite rappers, my idol, had a Black Friday sale today. (Open for 24hrs only) So it was advertised as to be 80% off on everything. You get free stickers & gift cards with your orders as well so it seemed like a good idea to want to buy items.
We were told the days leading up that hoodies would be $15, shirts would be $10. Originally the price is $75. So people were really looking forward to buying today.
Only there were a few problems, one was the site kept crashing. I’m not gonna blame him for that because it wasn’t his fault that all the fans were trying to buy items before they sold out. (Only 100 of each available) Second the prices were not as advertised the days leading up to the sale. So lying about the prices being a low cost and then the hoodies were now $25-$50 and the shirts weren’t $10 but $20+.
I felt bad for the people expecting to get 8 items or more but they couldn’t because the main thing that really screwed us over was the SHIPPING COST.
I figured out that when you had more items in your cart, then the shipping would skyrocket. Like really.. skyrocket.
I had three items in my cart and it was $54 total. Went to checkout and my shipping made it come out to $70+. Overpricing items + discounted items = original cost.
You can call it a sale all you want. But the shipping should not have been $30+ for people. When it was ADVERTISED as being AFFORDABLE for EVERYONE.
You’d be lucky to have your order process because the site kept crashing with everyone all on it at once. And if you had to refresh then your items disappeared(not for me) ((for some though))
My cart kept taking items out and I’d have to re-put them because I didn’t want my items to end up being sold out.
I ended up taking out two items and kept the hoodie I wanted originally. My total ended up staying around $50. Which is what I wanted to spend in the first place.
But my whole problem is the lying. Even if it’s not intentional, not addressing it just makes the fans feel like we were scammed or something. I saw so many people upset because the shipping literally ruined everything for them.
I don’t want to seem ungrateful cause I know he worked really hard on this but the outcome didn’t feel like it.
I UNDERSTAND that other artists make their merch hella expensive and I should be “happy” or whatever but don’t fucking gaslight someone because they didn’t have enough.
When AGAIN.. we were TOLD prices were gonna be affordable. And shipping would be the “cheapest”.
I even tagged him in my own comment because it was upsetting to me and yea haven’t heard back yet.. pretty sure he won’t reply at all.
I don’t hate him, I still love him and his music but i feel like he didn’t think about the shipping costs. Didn’t think to inform everyone that if you try and get three items that your cost and tax will increase hella amount.
It really made me bummed out when I was looking forward to getting more out of this sale event. I’m grateful for the items I was able to purchase because I got into the site before it shut down with everyone. I’m grateful for being early.
But I feel bad for those who still missed out on this when once again was advertised, as cheap and affordable for everyone.
**And this is kinda unrelated but I also got a follower because I was talking about the cost being overpriced and then they requested to DM me, long story short, that person was a fucking shithead. And I deleted their attempt to follow and declined their dm request. I’ve got no time to speak with someone who doesn’t understand that people aren’t made of money. That we don’t all have $300 dollars to spend.**
Idk anyways if you read any of that thanks for listening to my TED Talk. Cause I really just needed to vent.

D&D Journal, Session 5 - Charn gets off the hook for Treason
Tumblr media
Alright! Dnd journal... This is an eventful one
So - Last time, Okra the Orc Princess was murdered after Charn and Arka committed treason and Adrick the Dwarf made a deal with a demon and blanked out.
Charn and Arka had to begin by presenting themselves in front of the king and justifying why they kept the stone instead of fulfill on their duty. The king sent out the Paladins to retrieve everyone, most of whom complied... Adrick requested a Paladin watch over his hammer and armor as he couldn't go armed.
Charn was an issue... He refused to allow Arka to go, saying that Arka knows nothing of the lands and has sealed herself in the vault. A deal was made to allow her to stay... Charn being pretty insulting to the Paladin by not paying him proper respect.
He's smart, though, and upon seeing the king spoke only in turn. He was given a chance to defend himself... And took it, preparing a long speech justifying these actions.
"May I speak feely?" "You may. Justify yourself."
I got through my first point, and the king stated that he understood and the ability to renegotiate the deal is beneficial to this kingdom... Then I said I wasn't done. Let me post my notes on this.
Backstory if you forgot: We were tasked by the king's guard to go to perform a mission for Shira, a demon allegedly dedicated to maintaining the war of Demons and Devils so that the material plane does not fall to the victor. She tasked us with retrieving a Shard of Obsidian from the Mistveil Orcs, making us make an accord to do so (Which Charn weaseled out of.) We obtained the shard, then refused to give it back, and then the orcish princess we allied with was murdered - allegedly by a Black Raven.
And my whole notes on why we kept the shard
Section one: Arguments on the face of it.
1 - No even exchange. As far as anyone is aware, the deal is purely that we give a demon an artifact that will massively boost the power of their army for no return, or a minor return. Even if her intentions are genuine, this methodology is flawed. Although this is right and honorable and for any earthly country would instill strong diplomatic ties in the future, here I feel a proper exchange of resources is a bare minimum. Unlike other societies, good will is not an outcome here - Demons will not honor any past favors that were not an explicit agreement when parlaying in the future.
2 - No goodwill. To almost anyone on the material plane, the free offering of aid in a time of crisis for mutual benefit is a wise, charitible, and intelligent maneuver that will instill long-term goodwill and political relations. However, this is a deal with demons - Creatures of evil and greed. No matter how much charity you show them, they will never return gifts in kind unless an explicit deal is made. Furthermore, though offering aid at no cost to them in a time of need is a noble and goodly action towards humanoids, it will likely communicate that this kingdom is an easy place to exploit for personal gain to a demon.
3 - Potential for failure. Again, assuming Shira is telling the truth and entirely genuine in her actions, there is the potential she will fail, have the stone stolen, or become corrupted by it's power and elect to overtake the enemy forces instead of fight them to a neutral position. In any of these scenarios - And I remind you that time flows much faster in that plane, so these outcomes may come sooner rather than later - we will be facing a much more powerful enemy than if we had simply done nothing
4 - Potential gain. For the reasons above, this is a bad deal even if the demons themselves had only the resources of a common country to offer. However, this is a deal that might only come once in a lifetime - A deal with a demonic commander in which, to use a proverb, all the cards are in your hand. If this is genuinely needed, you could gain untold riches, magical items, or enough demonic aid to end the War against the Elven Lands in a fortnight.
5 - Breaking of a demonic accord. Unless someone else spoke first, I was the only one to accept this quest from Shira herself. My words were chosen carefully to get me out of any demonic accords: I stated that I could investigate the misty islands, but could not guarantee our success. As such, we can currently renegotiate at no penalty.
Section two: Things not adding up.
In this section I will elucidate how I believe that Shira is lying to us, and using us for her own gain. This is less factual, and more speculative than the previous section, but may bear greatly on your decision-making process.
1 - Timeline. Shira stated that she needed our aid, or else she would lose the war. She could not leave her current area, or she would fall, and so needed us to explore and find the object for her. Despite this, we took over two months in travel time - a period several years in the demonic realm. As such, I believe that she is in no real danger of losing the war anytime soon, although she is perhaps in a slow decline... Surely the over two years of losing battles with her there, is the equivalent of the week or so without her that it would take for her to obtain the Shard herself even if she for some reason couldn't defer this task to a capable demon
2 - Chosen heralds. Shira had us go obtain the item for her, an odd choice. Foremost, we are not especially noteworthy... At the time we had only a few conditional victories and were trusted scouts, but had a reputation for bad communication and poor teamwork. Further, we had made a terrible impression. Upon seeing her and her plane, our Lizardfolk Ally froze in shock and could not move, our dwarf struck him near-dead, and she watched us almost die to a demon while laughing. Again, I stated outright that I could not guarantee our success. In short, no one who legitimately needed this object would possibly trust us - She would want a teacher of the Petrels, a Squad of Ravens, or at least a party that displayed great competence. However her choice makes a large amount of sense if she saw us as competent enough to succeed, but incompetent and inexperienced enough to not question things or stand up for our doubts.
3 - Dismissal of humanity and it's allies. Shira was casually dismissive of humanity and it's allies, as incompetents who would die almost immediately should the blood war spill into our plane. Even ignoring our party's issues, it makes little sense as to why she would choose even the best of humanity to aid her if she believes this - Surely a demon commander has contacts in other planes willing to help if she is genuinely just trying to keep the balance
4 - Obfuscation. She was highly evasive of offering information and relied on awe to trust that we would accept a face-value explaination. For instance, she did not tell us what the shard did and gave vague answers when pressed. At one point she told us an outright falsehood - That the material plane would instantly fall should hell invade. Even after we returned, we were subtly threatened by vale members for compliance. This could be evidence of double-speak and attempting to obscure details, although it is also somewhat consistent with typical demonic habits.
5 - Demonic presence of vale members. We suspect various vale members of consorting with demons that would undermine the crown, possibly through deliberate conspiracy or through domination. We have sighting of fanged members and unusual happenings, but due to the timeframe lack solid evidence at this time
For these reasons, we suspect the entirety of Shira's story is an utter fabrication. I believe she is using us to gain the shard, for power, in order to win the blood war, and may be manipulating the vale in it's entirety in order to do so. As such, I suspect returning this shard will do the exact opposite of what is stated, and may lead to the material plane's destruction.
Additionally, I suggest a thorough investigation of the vale in it's entirety.
....The DM seemed to state "Is my plot that easy to see through? What the hell" and someone made the joke "Profession (Lawyer)" to me.
This begins the saga of Charn: Master Investigator - I go around with my Armor Coat and Revolver solving crimes. This is my new life, and I eagerly accept it. I thought I was slowly becoming a cowboy accidentally, turns out, NO, I'm a PI.
...Ahem, I was given three months to figure out what to do. As well as 25 lashings for high treason; Arka had to endure as well. A rough night, but not an unwarranted one. And Pavia spoke out of turn and insulted someone in the king and queen's prescence, and so was put in the stocks.
---
...Adrick was in the bar that night with Alia, the Aasimar. Soon a tiefling bard strolled up and played them a song - Knocking out everyone but Adrick. They discussed some of their dark deals, and he made another demonic accord - One to get his homeland strength and power, to allow him to take the crown, to give him honor, and to ensure prosperity. At his darkest moment, he got a taste of the abyssal... And now he will run with it.
The Aasimar awoke, and confronted him on it. She couldn't see through his lies, but something was VERY WRONG. It seems she became somewhat headstrong, and is a bit less of a passive entity - a bit of character growth.
The argument was protracted, and the Aasimar refused to budge. Adrick countered by insisting this had to do with him and his home land, and was the private business of a Thane. In the end, the Aasimar was physically attacked by an unarmed strike as Adrick became enraged. Tosh, the party's fox, was here too observing, and brought the situation down by joking and getting everyone to leave, and joking with the bartender.
The next day, Adrick would speak to the king and arrange a trip to the dwarven lands to try and smooth over the currently-rocky relationship between Angelpoint and the Daarves. Once he is free, they will depart. And thus, his schemes begin.
---
Adrick came to meet Arka and I after we recovered from our lashings. He offered us a day at a local spa/bathouse... In-character, we knew nothing of his schemes and machinations, and took this to mean that he was apologizing for getting angry at us for dishonor. We eagerly accepted and decided to head to to decide what to do.
During the spa day, we mapped out our current quests... - A visit to the Dwarven Lands to ensure Diplomatic Relations - The murder of Princess Okra, and smoothing over relationships with the Orcs - Proving the Mistveil is a puppet organization to allow Shira to gain power, or proving their innocence instead - Fighting the threat of the Elven Lands and the plague therein - Figuring out what to do with the shard
...We all agreed that the Orcs are the most pressing issue, and so Adrick and Alia decided to take a ship ahead to try and calm them while we held back and gathered evidence. They had a long encounter fighting orcas commanded by merfolk (allies of the orcs, long story) and eventually got to the shore.
As for the rest of us, we had a mystery to solve - Charn, Arka, and our fox, Tosh

My current homeowner's insurance has the replacement cost of my home at $189,000. I've been shopping for insurance and I've gotten estimates anywhere from $250,000 to $700,000. Other agents say I am way under-insured. When I asked my current agent why they set the replacement cost so low, the agent said that I do not have to replace it with the exact same brick Victorian house, I can get a nice modular home for even less than $189,000. My question is why there is such a variation in replacement costs between agencies and why the current broker seems to think I deserve less than I have now?""

The Most Wonderful Time of the Year: Operation Secret Santa
Tumblr media
Killian gets Emma for their Secret Santa, the only trouble is, he’s never met her before.
Before you start wondering if you have deja vu, yes, this is the same prompt as yesterday. My brain saw two different paths the story could take and I wanted to write both #SorryNotSorry.
Yesterday I credited @xemmaloveskillianx with inspiring the original idea with her story Secret Santa. Today I’ve got to show some love to some banter-loving ladies who inspired me to up my banter game with this one shot. I don’t do it as well as any of them, but I try:
@welllpthisishappening for To Make The Season Bright
@blessed-but-distressed for The Morning After The Night Before
@lovethatshit for All I Want For Christmas Is…
AO3
Day 1 |  Day 2 |  Day 3 |  Day 4 | Day 5 | Day 6 | Day 7 | Day 8 | Day 9  | Day 10 | Day 11 | Day 12
Operation Secret Santa
Emma Swan.
Killian read the words and groaned. He had obviously made the naughty list this year. He had definitely, quite specifically told Santa that for Christmas he wanted anything but being Emma Swan’s Secret Santa.
He knew he should’ve put in a written request instead of just sending his wishes out into the universe. A letter to the North Pole probably would’ve been more effective. (Although who was to say he wouldn’t still have ended up with the Secret Santa equivalent of coal in his stocking?)
He had nothing against her - but, as of yet, he hadn’t met her, which made buying any kind of decent gift for her somewhat problematic.
And her “wish list” consisted of just one word: chocolate? If worse came to worst he guessed he could always just buy 25 bucks worth of Christmas chocolate and hope for the best, but she didn’t seem all that certain that she even wanted it, so it felt like a risky move.
There was only one thing for it: Killian was just going to have to befriend the elusive Emma Swan.
Drinks Friday @ Aesop’s Tables? He messaged their group chat. He could do this. He could get to know Emma. He could discover what her heart desired and give it to her (as long as it cost $25 or less).
Operation Secret Santa was on.
Emma wasn’t coming. Of course. This was the reason for his predicament in the first place: when your job involves working nights it’s hard to socialise with people who work in the day. Still though, he could enjoy a fun night with his friends and make alternative arrangements to meet Miss Swan.
Somehow.
He was settled in a booth with David, Mary Margaret, Robin, Regina and Belle when he was temporarily distracted by a blonde bombshell in a figure hugging dress.
“Play your card, Killian!” Robin said, nudging him hard in the side. They were playing Cards Against Humanity and he had been debating whether “Jesus is -” “gift wrapping a live hamster” or “taking down Santa with a surface-to-air missile”. He turned his attention back to the game and picked his card.
“What are you guys playing?”
He looked up at the unfamiliar voice. The bombshell was standing next to them, leaning forward to take a look at their game. He licked his lips involuntarily at the sight of her, oh yes, things were about to get interesting.
“Emma!” David cried, already cruising past tipsy and well into full on drunk territory and it had only just turned 8. He tried to stand up, but was thwarted by the table and instead pulled her down into the booth beside him, kissing her on the cheek.
Killian frowned at the display, was this beauty Emma Swan? If not, he couldn’t quite understand either David’s actions or Mary Margaret’s lack of reaction.
“Killian!” Dave interrupted his train of thought. “Have you met Emma?”
“Swan?” he asked, uncertain if he wanted the answer to be yes or no. On the one hand, he would enjoy nothing more than to get to know this enchantress. On the other, she was his best mate’s sister and he was fairly certain he’d get a punching for so much as looking at her funny.
“Guilty as charged. And you must be Killian Jones, my brother’s new boyfriend.”
David nodded but then processing what she said, shook his head. “What Killian and I have is a bromance for the ages, but nothing more. My dearest Mary Margaret is the only one for me.”
“More’s the pity,” Killian said sincerely. Emma laughed and he caught her eye, enjoying the twinkle of mischief he saw there. Oh man, was he in trouble.
Killian was definitely in trouble. He hadn’t realised that tonight Aesop’s Tables was branching out with “Christmasoke”. He waited at the bar, cringing as David warbled his way through “All I Want for Christmas is You” to a ridiculously happy Mary Margaret.
The trouble wasn’t that he couldn’t sing - Dave had a disturbingly attractive singing voice that had almost Killian questioning his sexuality - more that he was too drunk to remember the words or read them on the screen. He also seemed to be attempting some kind of ill-advised dance routine to add a little pizzazz to his performance and Killian was slightly concerned that he was going to break a bone.
“This is your fault.” Emma was nodding towards David with a look of disgust on her face.
“How do you figure?”
“You suggested this place.”
“I didn’t know this was going to happen and believe me, I didn’t force your brother to perform.” He watched in mild horror as David hit the final high note with alarming clarity and nearly fell off the karaoke platform attempting to bow.
“Still. I think you owe me.” He turned his full attention to Emma with a wide grin, intrigued by the suggestion.
“Oh yeah?” He leaned in a little closer. “And what exactly is it that I owe you?”
“Alcohol. Lots of it.”
“Your wish is my command,” he said with a grin, motioning to the bartender for another drink.
“Every time someone massacres Mariah tonight, I expect another drink.”
“Are you sure that your liver can take that much alcohol? I don’t want to poison you.”
“I will welcome death with open arms.”
He laughed at the melodramatic statement. “You seem to feel very strongly about festive tunes.”
“Festive songs are barely tolerable as it is. Can’t have people with their poor cover versions and shitty karaoke renditions destroying the classics.”
“Very true, love. OK, we have a deal. Every time a classic dies, you get a drink.”
“Good man.”
Killian had his arms wrapped around Emma’s waist and was holding her steady as she attempted to open her front door. He wished that this was in the context of having been invited for a nightcap, but it was simply a consequence of 5 renditions of All I Want for Christmas is You, 3 of Jingle Bell Rock and a particularly terrible performance of White Christmas.
Emma Swan was messy drunk and having supplied most of her drinks he felt the need to ensure that she got home safely. He was fairly certain that David would kill him if he didn’t.
When it became apparent that she wasn’t able to unlock her door without help, he wrapped his hand around hers, guiding the key towards the lock. Between them they stumbled into her apartment. He tried to release her once she was through the door, but when she nearly fell over he picked her up in a bridal lift.
She giggled and he felt weak-kneed. He was definitely going to blame the rum for that, although the truth was that Emma giggling just did things to him.
She pointed him in the direction of her room and he carried her there. He carefully placed her down and deliberately ignored the way her dress had ridden up her thighs. He moved to go get her a drink, when she grabbed hold of his lapels and pulled him in for a kiss.
It was messy. A little too much teeth and not enough finesse but she was pulling him in as though desperate for him. And he wanted that so much. But… This wasn’t right.
He pulled back from her and she let go of him and dropped back against her bed. “That was…” he panted and broke off, unsure of how to continue. Unexpected? Definitely. Hot? Yes. A terrible move? Oh, absolutely.
“Thanks, Killian,” Emma mumbled and closed her eyes. He left her room in search of water intending to make her drink some before she fell asleep. However by the time he returned she was passed out and so he set down the glass on her bedside table, covered her with her blanket and left her to sleep.
Killian stood at Emma’s door, hot drinks tray in hand, internally debating whether this was the right move to make.
On the one hand, after last night’s alcohol intake she was sure to need some form of refreshment. On the other, she might not appreciate the appearance of the guy who got her drunk, carried her to bed, kissed her then left, on her doorstep. Even if he did come bearing gifts.
He decided not to second guess it. He would offer her a beverage and be on his way. If she invited him in, excellent, but he was hardly expecting her to roll out the red carpet for him.
He knocked and waited. She eventually opened the door looking bleary-eyed and clutching at her head. “Killian?” She looked deeply confused by his presence, or perhaps she was just fighting a hangover to keep her eyes open.
“I come bearing hot beverages to chase the hangover away. Tell me, love, what’s your poison?”
She blinked. “That is too much words for this much hangover.”
Killian chuckled. “I have a choice of: hot chocolate, tea, black coffee - there’s cream and sugar if you want, and some disgustingly sugary festive concoction claiming to contain caffeine and calories.”
“For me?” was all Emma said, he nodded. “Why?”
“I feel a bit responsible for how drunk you were.”
“You should.”
“Don’t worry, I’m going to go home and torture myself with festive tunes on repeat.”
“The really bad ones?”
“Definitely. Especially dodgy cover versions of once great Christmas songs.”
Emma nodded approvingly. “Good. I’ll take the hot chocolate.” He passed it over and watched as she took a sip then her eyebrows rose in surprise. “Cinnamon?”
“Is that OK?” He scratched behind his ear. “Sorry, I picked that up from your charming brother and sister in law.”
“It’s good. It, er, runs in the family.” There was a long pause. “Thanks for the, how’d you say it? ‘hot beverage’,” she mimicked his accent and used air quotes, but damn if it wasn’t adorable. “But, I need to go die in bed, so bye. Might see you later if I come back from the dead.”
Are you dead yet?
Why do you have my number?
I needed to be certain that I could obtain proof of life for Dave. I couldn’t have him thinking that I behaved in an untowards manner when I escorted you home.
Stop texting like Mr Darcy. It just killed me again.
Because you were overcome by how attractive I am even via text?
I’m going to haunt you from beyond the grave. I’m not going to leave you alone for a second.
I would despair if you did.
Your ghost is very lazy, I haven’t noticed one book fly across the room unexpectedly, heard any unusual noises or even misplaced my keys once in the past few days.
Sorry, Killian, I did come back from the dead.
Shouldn’t you be trying to eat me then?
Emma sent a selfie with brows furrowed, lips pursed and head tilted to one side. Caption: Seriously?
I meant my brains. Like a zombie.
OK.
Although I would never deny a lady who was wanting to act out her deepest desires.
Shut up, Jones.
As you wish.
Stakeouts are the worst.
I’m bored.
Come on, Mr Darcy, distract me from the cold.
Are you asking me to come warm you up, love?
You wish.
I only meant I could bring you hot chocolate and grilled cheese. Although I could be persuaded to try other techniques to keep you warm. I hear that skin to skin contact is excellent for transferring body heat. ;)
I shouldn’t have texted you.
Killian wasn’t entirely certain that he was actually learning anything about Emma that would help him with Operation Secret Santa. So far his present ideas consisted of hot chocolate and hand warmers. While he was sure she’d appreciate both, they didn’t feel like the thoughtful gift that would come of such extensive reconnaissance.
And yet he found that he had no interest in cutting off contact.
He loved needling her - enjoying the way she cut him dead in his teasing. And texting her was becoming his favourite part of the day. He strongly suspected that he needed to get out more. And that was why he found himself agreeing to a set up.
The Frost sisters were new to town and Mary Margaret seemed to have made it her mission to help the elder one find love. As he secretly suspected that Mary Margaret wanted to give him a love life for Christmas too, he thought she must have been delighted by the plan.
It was not going well.
Elsa was perfectly lovely - although she had the misfortune of having another blonde beauty to live up to. Nice as she was, her cool, calm demeanour stood in stark relief to Emma’s more firey nature and suffered by comparison.
Luckily they worked out quite quickly that neither one was interested in anything more than friendship. It meant they could relax and settle into an evening of eating and laughing at the over the top festive decorations of the restaurant (at least one customer got tangled in low hanging snowflakes much to their amusement and hanging mistletoe over the tables seemed more than a little desperate.)
In fact, the only dark spot on the evening was when he looked at his phone while Elsa was in the bathroom to see several messages from Emma.
Got the guy early so I’ve got the evening free, want to do something?
I have a strange urge to mock Christmas movies. There will be popcorn and rum. If you’re not busy.
I’ve never known you to be this quiet. You better not be silently judging me for the festive film viewing.
He was just about to reply when Elsa slid back into her seat. He sighed a little and shoved his phone back into his pocket.
“Who is she?” Elsa asked with a knowing grin.
“Sorry?”
“Whoever’s texting you - you were gazing at your phone like a lovesick puppy and looked so sad to have to put it away just now.”
He scoffed and shook his head in a way that was intended to convey oh, that meant nothing. But then his phone buzzed in his pocket and he twitched to see if Emma had more to say. Elsa laughed at him. “What’s say that we get the bill so you can get back to your phone?” He blushed a little but nevertheless nodded in agreement.
Forgive me Lady Swan, I was unavoidably detained, is that offer still open?
No.
Unless you get me pop tarts.
He knocked on her door, pop tarts in hand a little over 30 minutes later. “Your pop tarts, milady,” he said, presenting them with a flourish. She rolled her eyes, but took them from him and stepped aside to let him in.
He had an unfortunate flash of memory of the last time he was in this apartment - of enthusiastic if sloppy kisses - that he forced himself to push aside. He wasn’t entirely sure if she remembered them, and if she did, she seemed to have no interest in repeating the experience.
He sauntered to the couch and slumped down into it. “What are we watching?”
“A Christmas Prince - it’s absolutely terrible,” Emma answered, her eyes lighting up gleefully. She settled down next to him, snuggling into his side. Interesting. “So, where were you earlier?” she asked, her voice sounding just a little too casual.
“I was on a date.” She stiffened and shifted, subtly moving herself away from him. He smiled to himself at her response, and put an arm around her shoulder, pulling her back towards him. “Mary Margaret seems to be trying to act out a Hallmark Christmas movie and find the lonely Brit a date for Christmas. She might’ve had more luck if she had checked that the chosen lady wanted to date a man.”
“She set you up with a lesbian?” Emma pushed away from him to gape at him in horror.
He chuckled. “Not quite that bad - she’s bi, but said she’s more interested in dating a woman at present. She didn’t really like to get into the particulars with someone she had only just met, which is why she agreed.”
“Oh your poor ego,” Emma teased.
“My ego can take it. I may be devilishly handsome, but the heart wants what it wants and I’m clearly too manly for her.” Emma snorted with laughter. “Besides, I only went to shut Mary Margaret up.”
“Keep telling yourself that,” was Emma’s cheeky reply, but she happily cuddled back into him before switching the film back on.
The more time he spent with Emma the more he realised that her list wasn’t designed as some kind of “fuck you” to the entire Secret Santa concept - she just genuinely wasn’t into stuff. She had her few creature comforts: snuggly blankets, a coffee maker, an impressive stash of tooth-rotting treats, but she seemed to prefer a simple life.
It was endearing, but again, challenging. His list of potential things Emma might like for Christmas was up to hot chocolate, hand warmers, rum, pop tarts and possibly Harry Potter merchandise.
Christmas Eve was getting ever closer and while he had succeeded in getting to know Emma Swan, the perfect gift for her became ever more elusive. The better he knew her, the more he wanted to get something incredible.
In the end he bought a stocking and filled it with little everyday luxuries for her. It still felt like not quite enough, but $25 only took you so far. Still, she seemed to appreciate it all when she opened it for the gift exchange, so he was classing Operation Secret Santa a success.
So why didn’t he feel more satisfied?
“Hey, Santa.” He was hiding in the kitchen to escape from the increasingly torturous festive games Mary Margaret was making them play when Emma found him.
He looked up, quirking a brow at her, puzzled by Emma’s greeting. “Hmm?”
“You telling me that you’re not Santa?”
“Are you calling me a jolly old fat man? Is that a hint to lay off the desserts? Because honestly, that’s a little rude, love. You don’t want to wound my ego, do you?”
She laughed at him. “Don’t worry, you still look dashing. But are you really telling me that you’re not my Santa?”
His mouth dropped open in surprise but he smiled at her all the same. “You’re bloody brilliant, you know that, Swan?”
She smiled, looking a little smug and dropped into a curtsey.
“So did I do OK with my Santa duties?”
“Hmmm.” Emma looked thoughtful. “Can I be honest?”
Killian’s eyebrows shot up in wonder - what on earth could she have to say? “Aye?” he replied warily.
“There’s something that I want. I’ve been dropping hints, and I kind of thought that Santa might have picked up on it?” She smiled up at him through her eyelashes. Did she mean what he thought she meant? Ever since his date with Elsa, he’d hoped, but that was just wishful thinking, right?
Killian’s heart beat a little faster. “And what might that be?”
She leaned up on her tiptoes and pressed her lips gently to his. “At the risk of being cheesy, all I want for Christmas is you.”
“Well, love, luckily for you, I feel exactly the same.” And when he kissed her it felt like all his Christmas wishes had come true.

Here’s Proof of Some of my Recent Purchases
In recent years I’ve purchased a variety of top quality residential investment properties. The principles and techniques I use are universal and can definitely be used anywhere.
2 of these properties purchased were ‘Off The Plan’ properties within 7km of Melbourne’s CBD, with a total value in excess of $800,000. The Melbourne property market grew by 26% that year, that’s $208,000 in equity growth, and these properties weren’t due for completion for another 6 to 12 months.
Here’s the basic details of my more recent property purchases:
Property 1 (September 2007) – 4 bedroom, 2½ bathroom, 2 storey country property. Purchase price $300,150. Set up as Luxury Holiday Accommodation in Mansfield – check it out at www.mansfieldhouse.net.
Property 2 (August 2008) – purchased ‘off the plan’ top level 2 bedroom apartment, settled Jan’ 2011. Purchase price $370,000
Property 3 (March 2009) – purchased tri-level townhouse in Footscray ‘off the plan’, settlement due Dec 2012. Purchase price $440,000, recently valued at $550,000.
Property 4 (March 2010 ) – 3 bedroom, 2½ bathroom, double garage townhouse in Brisbane. Settled August 2010. Purchase price $349,000
Property 5 (August 2014 ) – 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom, double garage townhouse in Melbourne. Settled September 2014. Purchase price $365,000
Property 6 (October 2014 ) – 3 bedroom, 1½ bathroom, double garage townhouse in Melbourne. Settled December 2014. Purchase price $404,000
Property 7 (February 2015 ) – 3 bedroom, 1 bathroom, double garage townhouse in Melbourne. Settled June 2015. Purchase price $383,000
Property 8 (July 2016 ) – 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom, double garage townhouse in Melbourne. Settled July 2016. Purchase price $485,000
[3 April 2011] “One of the purchases had to have their Footscray townhouse valued a few weeks ago. The great news is that the bank valuation came in at 550k, meaning it would sell for about 575K, so that’s a profit of $135K since you signed last June 2009”. A 30% capital growth increase.
– Labahn & Associates (Accountant), Melbourne Australia
These are potentially the results you can get if you apply and follow the simple rules and principles in Investment Property Success.
