Okay, accent/pronunciation post.
In Hereward the Wake, Tim pronounces âdutyâ with a /j/ (yod) which creates a pronunciation something like /ËdjuË.ti/ in the IPA or âdyoo-teeâ in English phonetic spelling. From what I can tell, this is one of two common pronunciations in English accents, the other being /ËdÊuË.ti/ in the IPA or âdjoo-teeâ in English phonetic spelling. This second pronunciation features coalescence of the d and yod to create a dj sound. This can be contrasted by Rachelâs pronunciation of âdutyâ in Alice, which features yod dropping, and can be written as /ËduË.ti/ in the IPA or âdoo-teeâ in English phonetic spelling. Although Tim is doing a very odd accent in Hereward, it doesnât really matter in this case. In Riddle of the Sphinx he pronounces âintroducedâ with a coalescence of the d and yod (/ËÉȘn. trÉ ËdÊuËst/ or âin-truh-djoostâ) and regardless of whether it is coalesced or not, as long as itâs not *dropped* it works for our purposes.
Okay, now we get into why this is funny to me. The yod-close back rounded vowel pair (/ju/ or âyooâ) comes to English from French. The French close front rounded vowel sound (/y/, I have no idea how Iâd write this in English phonetic spelling, but make the inside of your mouth like youâre gonna say âeeâ and your lips like your gonna say âooâ and thatâs how you make it) came into English and was separated into /i/ and /u/ (or âeeâ and âooâ) but then the /i/ was replaced with yod. This was not only applied to words that came from French, but also some pre-existing English words as well (and is now applied to foreign words once theyâve been in English long enough, like âCubaâ).
Now, when did the yod-close back rounded vowel pair enter English? Well, when was English heavily influenced by French? Thatâs right, when the Normans took over. And who fought the Normans? Hereward!
This lead me to the idea of an Anglish translation of Hereward the Wake. Has anyone done that yet?
[Note: information on the yod-close back rounded vowel pair came from this video by Dr. Geoff Lindsey; IPA representations were taken from the online Cambridge Dictionary and Wikictionary and adjusted where necessary (such as making âintroduceâ into âintroducedâ). Also Iâm not actually positive that Tim doesnât coalesce the d and yod in âdutyâ, it sounds kinda like both to me, but either way it comes from the French which is the important part for this post.]
#baaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhh#okay so nothing i state in this am i sure about. this is my understanding based on what little i know about linguistics etc etc#also the point was using pronunciation that we ultimately have because of the normans in a song about a guy who hated the normans.#i fucking love the accent he does for hereward. i could just talk about that. about what i like about it.#but mostly it boils down to enjoying it *because its interesting.*#i do not know *why* he does such an accent for it. but i like it.#the mechanisms#hereward the wake#gunpowder tim#tim ledsam#accent discussion#i guess also part of the point is that i suspect it was not intentional and thats just part of his accent#but i dont know. i havent specifically listened to everything i can to search for another instance of consonant-yod coalescence from him.#well. consonant-yod coalesnence that isnt present in my accent is what id be looking for. because some words have it in english generally-#speaking. like âpictureâ (pic-chur or sometimes pit-chur) and âactuallyâ (ack-choo-lee or ack-choo-uh-lee)

Dathomir Daily
VÄ«nâjoâthrenâsk (Firstborn)
A term used to refer to the first representatives of the Dathomiri people. There were two. A father and a daughter, nigh inseparable to the point that a word was applied to mean them both, one entity. Together, they destroyed the one holding the planet captive. And together, they worked to transform Dathomir into a place for all Dathomiri to live safely and peacefully. Free of oppression and exploitation.
Eârros DrakâÄ, The King with the Living Crown, and CwensĆ«tÄn FoâgorrâÄ«, the Mother of Rancors.
Their view of the Force was simple: the Dark is not always evil and the Light is not always good. There is Balance, there is strength. Pain is no friend but it is useful. Fire is a weapon but it is safety. Metal is the blade and the shield. All those who follow their their way take up their name.

my coloc complimented me on my pronunciation today and i'm like :"")
#he is also learning french so i'll take his compliment but ik my accent is still obviously foreign (imo at least) -_-'' :P#but tbh even when i speak in english my accent is v neutral so i guess it helps when i speak other languages?? idk#but he was like 'damn wait have you ever taken lessons before?'#and i said sorta yeah but none of them were very intense and i didn't see improvement solely from them NOR was speaking emphasised a lot#due to time restrictions#and he was like 'so how do you work on your pronunciation/accent??'#and i was like 'i just speak and if it sounds wrong i fix it' but like i listen to a lotta francophone music and watch a lotta french film#so i guess it does influence how i speak??#he was like 'wow if you're already like this in just six weeks of intense classes you'll advance so quickly'#i was like đđđ#ik it doesn't work like that for me but hey it was sweet of him to say <3 and hey maybe he is right! i should believe in myself a little#roacc

What if Diluc actually picked up a little Khaenriâahn, enough to even discern things from context clues should he have enough key words, bc Kaeya kept slipping up and forgetting words in common and would instinctively replace them with Khaenriâahn until he and Diluc figured out what he wanted to say. Then kept it up like a game bc it was plus Diluc was always super intrigued by Kaeyaâs birth language up until Kae realized he was risking Compromising himself if Diluc or Crepus ever realizes Exactly what it was and abruptly stopped altogether-

Writing Character Accents in Fiction
Hey there, thanks for the question! I speak English as a second language; most English speakers I encounter arenât native (yes, including fictional people); thus, this is a concern Iâve explored personally when I write.Â
I think the core principle regarding accent writing is this: it shouldnât be distracting.Â
For the same reasons why Stephen King prescribes the basic dialogue tag âsaidâ rather than fancier alternatives like âwhisperedâ, âshoutedâ or âscreechedâ, dialogue must be first and foremost easy to read. It must flow like a real conversation â the pace and tone are a lot more important than how specific words are being pronounced by the character.Â
Focus on what effect the accent has:
Using adjectives to describe their voice in general. Different types of English (American, British, Australian, etc.) will give off a different vibe, also partly dependent on how your character speaks in general:
Lilting: Having a smooth rise and falling quality; sing-song like. Welsh accent is often described as singing.Â
Posh: from a high social class. This is the term generally used to describe the upper-class British accent.
Nasal: this happens when the sound goes through somebodyâs nose when theyâre speaking. North American accents are more nasal than, say, British pronunciations.Â
Brash: harsh, loud, indicative of sounding a little rude.Â
Slur: speaking indistinctly; words merging into one another.
Using metaphors.
Her voice was cotton and fluffy clouds.Â
When he spoke, the ârâs scratched the insides of his throat.Â
Mentioning their accent with a brief example(s).Â
âWould you like to drink some wine?â she said, though her Indian accent gave extra vibration to her âwâs and ârâs, making the words sound more like âvould you like to drrrink some vineâ.
âI want some chocolate.â His syllables were choppy and âlâs rather flat, saying âcho-ko-litâ.Â
Some Tips:
Donât phonically spell out everything. Perhaps give a few examples in the beginning, but stick to standard English spellings.Â
Pay attention to word choice, slang, and colloquialisms.Â
An Australian person would say âtramâ, not âtrolley; ârunnersâ instead of âsneakersâ
A Canadian may refer to a âfire hallâ â what Americans call a firehouse or fire station
If your character comes from a non-Enligsh background:
Use vocabulary from other languages.Â
âWhat time was the exam, ah? Two oâclock? Jiayou!â â putting âahâ or âlaâ at the end of sentences + Jiayou means âbreak a legâ in Singlish.Â
âI canât believe that 4-year-olds have their own SNS accounts now.â â ïżœïżœSNSâ is short for âsocial networking serviceâ, a term used to refer to social media in Korea. This would a subtle difference â even though it isnât technically Korean at all!
Transpose grammar from different languages.Â
For example, in French, plural nouns take plural adjectives (whereas in English, you would speak of âwhite carsâ, not âwhites carsâ).
âââ  ïœĄïŸâ: *.✠.* . âââ

they were so caught up in having a woman wear pants in elizabethan england that they forgot they didn't have to involve antisemitism for historical accuracy's sake. in the witch and vampire show.
so i started this show and it just gets worse and worseeeee not only did it lift the romance subplot directly from twilight (and not well) but they also are trying to play the forbidden love angle hard in the fantasy racism vein except it's a "cross-species" relationship between the two whitest people i've ever seen in my life and there are three people of color in the whole (first season of the) show who aren't villains and it seems that every other episode (and sometimes ebery episode and sometimes twice an episode!) there is a man physically or magically subjugating a woman and i keep waiting for the big reveal at the end to be stolen from fucking rainbow rowell
#she doesn't struggle with anything for more than 5 minutessssss where is the Strife where is the conflict#why did she win his dad over in like 2 episodes. why did they have to get heterosexually vampire married and now everyone she meets keeps#starting conversations with how strongly she smells of him bc they mated so recently. girl you don't get to smack abo in here as well.#ALSO (spoilers for s2 i guess) there are literally chances for some fascinating parallels between matthew killing his dad and satu killing#meridian or whatever her name was but instead satu hasn't shown up at all and her name has been said once.#she's just the specialest woman to ever live so we don't have to care about the other insanely powerful witch who is also a weaver. i guess#this show just feels either lazy or rushed so they have to keep it simple? i hope the source novels are better bc they Have to have been#also i thought i was vibing with the 1590s costuming what with all the starched lace ruffs that seem to be actually tatted? hello gorgeous?#and then she was wearing a shift with no sleeves (???????) and ribbons just tacked onto it? like yes i appreciate them not doing the 'laced#so tight i can't breathe' scene and them having decent looking stays but like. if you're adding tatted lace cuffs to his shirts why would#you also make a sleeveless little tight-necked undershirt to be worn in Winter In Bohemia On Horseback#the men are all annoying and they yell so suddenly about shit that doesn't matter to demonstrate matthew's composure and humanity slipping#bc the time period was so savage. or something. also the blood disease he apparently has had the whole time that is just now becoming a#problem? for. reasons i guess?#also also is louisa being a drunk and a proto party girl a reference to jane the virgin or do i just miss jane the virgin. the world may#never know......#anyway back to the post. they brought in a rabbi and i knew things were going to go south for him :( he is alive but ridiculed and harassed#then they cut back to the present and i have to watch a very british man do an outfit montage in which he tries on 3 different gray shirts.#OH MY GOD ALSO like a third if not half the main cast is meant to be french and NONE OF THEM SPEAK FRENCH and it's so fucking obvious and#it's painful. it's painful i say!! if you've lived in france for 1200 years why would you anglicize your pronunciations of place names!!#especially those of your fucking family estate!! where you live!! none of them say the french the same way either ive heard like 4 differen#ways to say 'sept-tours' none of which were. french or correct. it's infuriating and it's grating and none of the producers noticed or care#god. why am i still watching this. why does n*tflix only let you speed things up 1.5x#sorry it's so easy to find things to take fault with it's almost made this drudge fun so now you all get to hear about it đ«¶

whatever you want, my angel | xu minghao
SYNOPSIS. in which your boyfriend calls you a term of endearment from his native tongue. PAIRING. xu minghao x gn!reader GENRE. fluff, a little bit of humour, established relationship WARNINGS. a singular kiss WORD COUNT. 845
requested by anon: Hey congratulations đ on 2k! Hope you grow more (Ik you will!)! Fighting! đI wanted to request Minghao + #32 from List 1 (Fluff Dialogue Prompts)đđđ - #32: "Did you just call me (pet name)?â
notes: hao looks so angelic in those photos i found omg going crazy. anyway, thank u sm lovely i hope u enjoy this đ„č𫶠short but cute hehe. this was the first thing ive written in 2 weeks sorry đđ
join the 2k celebration!
"Just a few more minutes, tiånxīn."
You never thought you could spin your head around as fast as now, eyes locking on your boyfriend casually stirring a spoon in a pot on the stove, low hums escaping his lips as if he was minding his own business.
Though as you get yourself to squint your eyes, you notice the extremely subtle curve that he has to his lips while the steam swirls around his head.
"Repeat that."
"Hm?" Minghao perks his head back up, eyelashes batting together innocently. "Did I say something?"
You place a hand at your hip, cocking your head to the side as you point a finger accusingly at him. "That. That nickname. Did you... did you just call me tyenshan?"
Minghao nearly bursts into a chuckle at your mushy pronunciation, and you feel your face growing red from the slight embarrassment. He bites his bottom lip, trying to stifle his amusement, and reaches over for the lid to cover over the pot before turning to face you with a small smirk.
"Tiånxīn."
You blink at him, still a bit puzzled. "Tyanshin? Tyen..."
Minghao just quietly watches as you struggle to grapple with the unfamiliar term. There's a hint of teasing in his eyes, but also a warmth that makes your heart skip a beat. He wipes his hands on a towel before stepping up to you, letting an arm sneakily wrap around your waist to pull you towards him.
The sudden closeness steals your breath for a moment. Minghao's arm feels warm and secure around your waist, and you can smell the faint scent of spices clinging to him from his cooking. Yet his gaze at you is filled with nothing but affection, even under the dim lighting of the kitchen light, and you can't help but melt into his touch.
"Sweetheart," he mutters casually. "That's what it means."
Your eyes grow wide momentarily, as if taking in the weight of the singular term of endearment. It's such a simple word, yet the way he says itđwith such tenderness and a hint of playfulnessđsends a warmth radiating through you.
You feel your fingers knead lightly at the fabric of his shirt at his side, and a curl passes through your lips as you get yourself to lock gazes with him.
"Can you say it again?" You ask again, a teasing tone to your voice.
MInghao just chuckles. "TiĂĄnxÄ«nđ"
He's cut off when he feels your lips softly press against his. The contact is all too brief, and nearly has him chasing after your mouth when you part away from him. There's a mischievous look blanketed to your features, but he finds himself still caught in a daze at whatever boldness you just unleashed.
"I like the sound of it," You say wistfully. "Tell me another one."
Minghao lifts a brow. He has no idea what you're trying to plot (if anything), but he complies nonetheless.
"WÇ de tiÄnshÇ," he murmurs, voice soft yet confident as he gazes into your eyes. "My angel."
Your heart seems to do a tumble and a flip simultaneously in your chest, and grasping onto the urge to teasingly rebuttal seems to dissipate away right under his eyes and his cute ass smile. You can feel your feet practically melt into the floor below, and you resist the need bury your face into his shoulder out of pure, giddy shyness.
"Oh," You mumble bashfully, heat crawling up your neck and to the tips of your ears. "Hao..."
"Ah, and another one," he jests, and you perk up once more. "BĂšndĂ n."
"BĂšndĂ n?" You repeat right after him, before letting out a feigned gasp. "Wait, dĂ n? Aren't you literally calling me an egg?"
"Mhm," Minghao answers charmingly. "My beautiful, silly little egg."
An airy scoff escapes your lips, the tension dissipating into hearty laughter bouncing off the walls as you swat playfully at his chest with a hand, making Minghao bring his arms up to shield away from your playful attacks.
"Alright, alright," he utters out between breaths as he steps his way back to the stove. "I'm sorry, you know I don't mean it."
All you do is roll your eyes before placing yourself directly behind him and letting your arms wrap around his waist. You nuzzle your cheek against his back, closing your eyes for a few moments to relish the comfort of his warmth coursing through you, a few contented sighs leaving your mouth. You could probably stay in this position for hours and not get tired of it; his presence enough seems to soften away whatever worries you had throughout the day.
"Call me that more often."
Minghao just grins. "What? BĂšndĂ n?"
"IđNo!" You lightly flick him with your finger. "Just... more of those other ones, please?"
Minghao lets out a soft chuckle, the rumble travelling through his chest and sending shivers down your spine. He swiftly turns off the heat to the stove, then reaches down to gently squeeze your hand where it rests on his stomach.
"Of course, tiĂĄnxÄ«n," he replies softly, affectionately. "Whatever you want, wÇ de tiÄnshÇ."

Sometimes I randomly remember that Kaz is the only member of the Crows who only speaks one language and for no apparent reason I find that endlessly amusing.
Like, the comedic potential here? Nina and Inej girl talking but as soon as he walks in the room they switch to Ravkan?? Wylan and Nina chatting in Kerch but then switching to Fjerdan when Matthias walks in and suddenly Kaz has completely lost track of the conversation?? Jesper saying something to Kaz in Zemeni that makes Nina howl with laughter, but neither of them will tell him what it was??? Itâs so funny to me.
He would also absolutely start learning another language out of sheer spite if they did this, but I think it would be hilarious if he chose Kaelish and tried to use it with Jesper and Jesper would just be like â⊠I donât speak Kaelish. I just know a little bit⊠I can sing in Kaelish, if you want?â and Kaz is so disappointed by this but he canât show it so he just starts yelling at Nina in Kaelish instead. She corrects his pronunciation and he nearly murders her.
Everyoneâs having fun.

i love it when authors make sirius only a little bit âcoolâ, but almost in the lucius malfoy-kind of pretty way. he may be a rebel but heâs still posh and vaguely traditional. his pronunciation becomes unbearably âstiff upper lipâ when heâs emotional. he wears his hair long because his father and grandfather also kept it long, because itâs tradition for wizards who are of age. he wears jewellery because wizards wear jewellery, not just witches, and the look of it is great. his tattoos, if he even has them, are runes like the old magicals used to have. he only wears muggle clothes when he has to because the feeling of denim makes his entire body cringe. he smokes cigarettes but would rather smoke a pipe.
sirius black, whose rebellion is purely political, utterly ideological, and not rooted into aesthetic like what this generation is so obsessed with. he appreciates modern and muggle things because theyâre interesting and fun, not lesser, but heâll always prefer dragonhide over cow leather. his favourite leather jacket is just a transfigured outer robe for the motorbike, for the off-chance that he rides it on the roads and needs to look the part.
he can be an activist and argue for muggle and muggleborn rights while dressed like a wizard. let him be as whimsical! let him be utterly out of his depth when he needs to blend in! he can be woke AND dressed all fancy please!! ideological rebellion is a mindset NOT the way you dress omfg
#sirius black#iâve developed a distaste for Really Cool in a Non Magical Way sirius#smth like punk does not LOOK punk necessarily
