You know, I was gonna do another one of those "TAZ out of context is bonkers" posts for Ethersea but like. The established commonly referenced canon is already fucking Wild enough. The Biggest Baby (Formerly Big Baby, there was a committee vote) is a psychic ship made of old god bones that enforces law and order over the underwater post apocalypse city. Old Uncle Joshy is an NPC solely dedicated to being one of the PCs oldest friends and also the most prolific con man in this society. Also he spends most of his time planning to jump out at people yelling VIBE CHECK. He started a school to psychically fight teleporting sharks as a Gambit but it turned out his best student did have psychic powers and is the only living person to kill a blinkshark, so there's that. There are Established Universe Rules including "everyone has a knife" and "there's a hole for that". At least 2 of the Big Bads are just.....giant sea worms. Literally everything that happened in Shrets restaurant. The ship canonically has cubicles and coffee rings in the bridge. One of the PCs moves by farting from his feet. All of this is made fun of nearly every episode. I can't do it this time Ethersea is too self aware

he wears a mask constantly obscuring his features and wears full-piece suits. in his free time he likes to talk to mechanical animatronics and pretend they're his family. he is a thief and a great liar. he repeatedly managed to convince multiple people that he's their long lost father to get out of trouble. he absolutely could be a deadbeat dad but isn't!

thinking about ethersea so here's some stuff about the pcs and the end of the world that they knew. i dont know if someone else has already put this together but here's what my brain says.

amber is a continuation of the problems from the world of the past. how can she not be? she was born before the apocalypse hit--early enough that she lost everything she had, late enough that she had to figure something new out. the only thing left for her is her hatred of the blinksharks, a problem from before that has stuck around until now. she quite literally continues this cycle of worlds and gods and destruction by jumping through the portal and becoming the god of the creatures that she hated for so, so long. not even to mention the scene where she takes the place of the girl standing her ground against koda and destroying him; something something these gods made the world the way it is and they're still causing problems...that has to mean something, right?

devo is an advocate for the world that was lost. this is clearly seen in episode 35 with his discussion with tolliver; he argues against the reckless destruction of what's left for fun, and instead wants to preserve as much as possible for the generations to come after. maybe they can't really go back ever, but they can keep as much as possible, can't they? he's the voice of hope for the people who were lost. his place as the one to give the prophecy in world B is also him calling all of these people and their families to take care of themselves, to save themselves from destruction, so that at least something can survive from this world's annihilation.

zoox is the world beginning to heal. he's a copy of the people who came before, made by those same people, sure, but he's got something new. he's magic. his magic is him and the creatures living within him. he's a person made from this ocean that is everything that is left. the sea that destroyed the world in the first place is now making its own people, trying to create new life, trying to start over again. maybe things will never be the same as before, sure, but that doesn't mean we have to entirely give up, and zoox is a perfect representation of that. he has an eagerness to live and make this world a new and better place.

Auuuuuugh,,, sobs,,, my sillies!! I have once again been hit by an ambiguous ending in a piece of media I love!! Very excited for a season 2 if/when they do it, seeming as the McElroys showed interest in running one.

BUT LIKE. Amber’s freefalling through the portal to another world?? The whole Kodeira and Koda thing and the whole “have you ever felt a god die inside you? It’s not fun” thing?? The way they’re stuck together in this other world, now essentially deities themselves, and the way that Amber is willing to help a blinkshark instead of killing it??? I AM INSANE. AND THATS NOT IT

I’m ALSO insane over Devo choosing the title “the Voice of Hope”,,,, sobs. Same thing with Zoox getting his new coral body and being a protector. Them trying to fix timelines and all,,, the fact both Zoox and Devo are trying to find Amber and open the portal again, even if it takes a long time,,, ueueueuue

The Hermitcraft x TAZ: Ethersea crossover that no one asked for but I’ve been thinking about for a long time

Ever since he was a guppy, xB loved the ocean. There was something so numbingly peaceful about the deep ocean, where no human could follow, and very little lived. xB looked for diamonds down in the deepest depths, since no one else would dare. It was dangerous, yes, but totally worth it most of the time.

But now, xB had hurt himself badly. He’d been deep-sea mining and had come across a patch of gravel that had given way to pointy dripstone, which he’d fallen into. Badly injured, he couldn’t swim, and instead found himself drifting down a narrow underwater ravine, unable to move without pain.

It was here that he heard the voices.

“Hello?”

The voice wasn’t heard, more beamed directly into his mind. xB looked all around, but saw nothing.

“Hello?” He answered back out loud.

“Stranger in our lands, yes?” Another voice asked, right in his head.

“Who- hello?” xB asked. There were definitely two separate voices, both peculiar and curious, but nothing like xB had ever heard before.

“You are fish, yes?” One voice asked.

xB clicked his tongue in indecision. “Uhhh, yes and no. I just, like, vibe mostly. Are you a fish?”

“No.” From either side of the of the narrow ravine xB was still slowly sinking into, two sets of glowing orange eyes appeared, bigger then xB was expecting. Those bulbous eyes watched him sink slowly, and xB could do nothing but look back. “We are dangerous to not friends. You are not fish, yes? Are you not friend? Yes or no.”

There is a very particular feeling of dread that comes with realization of being trapped and utterly helpless to get away. It’s prickly, a slow, awful, whole-body sensation, and xB could feel if so deep inside him it threatened to come out in a scream. He was the prey here, and he didn’t even know to what.

“Hard to tell if I am friend or not when I don’t even know who you are. It’s good manners to introduce yourselves, you know.” xB managed to choke out, hoping that if that was the wrong thing to say, at least his death would be king of funny.

“Good… manner?” One voice asked.

“Yeah, like, you don’t know me, and I don’t know you, so we have to talk to each other and figure out if we are friends or not.” xB still hasn’t moved, and those eyes kept following him. He knew he was one wrong word away from a horrible death, but he kept talking. “I’ll start. I am xBcrafted. I mostly hang out on land, but I can also breathe underwater. So like half a fish. And you- oh! You’re blinksharks!” xB had drifted so far down that the two creatures were having to strain themselves to watch him. They both moved, quick and sudden, and with their movement came long lines of bioluminescent light on their skin, and he could see their bodies, and the myths of blinksharks came back to him

“Yes. You know us?”

“Know you? Yeah, I grew up with stories of you!” xB said weakly. As a little guppy, his community elders had told him stories of what lurked deep below the surface of the water. Fish with jagged teeth, microorganisms that ate flesh and scale. But most prominent, at least in xB’s mind, had been the myth of the blinkshark. Huge, ancient creatures that had been slain and saved by the gods. As the legend went, they were like hammerhead sharks, but huge, with bulbous eyes. They were invisible, unless it was already too late. xB had always assumed it was myth to keep the children out of the deeper waters, but there had clearly been more to it. xB stared at the two huge, ancient creatures, and they looked back at him with curiosity.

“You know us by name?” One voice asked.

“But you come from surface. We were once hunted on surface, yes.” Said the other voice. “You hunt us?”

“No.” xB said. “I would never.”

The blinksharks were both eye-level with him now, so it was like being in a bioluminescent tornado. xB felt absolutely tiny, like the guppy he had been when he’d been told those myths.

“Friend.” The voices both spoke as one.

“We take.” One voice said.

“Back to the surface, yes?” The other voice said.

“Yes!” xB said.

“Okay. Don’t move, yes?”

One of the blinksharks moved forward suddenly, tilting its huge head to one side and gently taking xB’s body into its mouth. There was a squeezing sensation, everything went dark for a moment, and then xB was breathing in warm spring air. He looked around- he was lying at the edge of his starter base, a place he hadn’t visited in months. The water of the Hermitsippi River lapped at his clothes gently.

“Home?” One of the blinksharks asked him. He sat up, hissing in pain, and looked into the river, where both blinksharks were crowding the water, causing flooding on the riverbanks. In this space, xB could really appreciate and marvel at how big they were.

“Yes. Thank you. Friends.” xB said. There was a pop, and they were gone. The water that had been displaced rushed back in, flooding xB’s house. But xB didn’t mind, not one bit. The blinksharks had called him friend. They’d spoken to him.

He knew he couldn’t tell a soul about them, had sensed their gentle terror at the mere thought of a hunter in their ocean. But he knew now, could call those ancient beasts friend. And that was incredible.

I have one for Balance, her name is Tessele Dundragon and she was an intern at Maureen Miller's lab before becoming a seeker at the Bureau of Balance, and she fucking hates lucas's guts. She wears pink tourmaline jewelry. She sneaks out of the moonbase against Lucretia's orders the second she finds out about the whole crystalization thing. She hunts lucas down and yells at his ass. When he runs away she searches for him cause goddamnit you aren't allowed to just disappear. They have a rivals to lovers kind of thing going on. She also works with Angus as seekers and is best friends with Avi, Lucretia is a kind of an aunt figure to her. Noelle is her pal. I love her.

Amnesty, I have 2, they are severely underdeveloped.

One is named Thyla, they are the last thylacine. Sometimes people see them and think tasmanian tigers are back, and she feels bad about that.

The other is a banshee and I did not end up naming her or fleshing her out hardly at all. I am not as into Amnesty as balance or ethersea so I have a harder time incorporating them.

I made one for ethersea too but straight up do not remember her!

Hey if you haven't been keeping up with TAZ after Balance bc Amnesty was kinda darker and story heavy, and then Graduation wasn't your vibe:

LISTEN TO ETHERSEA

I cannot stress enough how it feels the closest to Balance out of any of their shows so far. Griffin is DMing and they're in D&D 5E again. The characters are emotionally compelling, but also do stupid shit nonstop. NPCs are unnecessarily bitchy again and all is right with the world.

Clint is playing Zoox, a Ranger construct made from coral, and inhabited by an amalgamation of several disembodied souls.

Travis is playing Devo, a Bard who left the insular religious order that raised him. His character voice is a French accent and he's naive but also tired of people's shit.

Justin is playing Amber Gris, a monk who uses her SPECTRAL ARMS to PUNCH BLINKSHARKS (there are teleporting sharks btw) and she's old and grizzled and phenomenal.

PLEASE LISTEN I need this fandom to emerge again like one of those dessicated frogs after a bounteous rainfall

Some thoughts/ theories that I might have taken too far:

-Oksana (now Kodera) was chosen by a mostly dead vestige as his ‘’representative’’ in the world. Travis introduced the Hand of Guidance in the prologue as ‘’Benevolence’s hand of guidance’’. Tolliver is probably a vestige or, like Kodera, a ‘’representative’’ of a vestige. All of them (and Koda, hopefully) wish either to preserve this world or escort its inhabitants to another (maybe the same one Amber saw, if she is also a vestige’s ‘’chosen’’?). 

-Which is different from ending this world and leading its inhabitants to death which appears to be what the empty corals want, according to the blinksharks.

-Which is also different from what Tolliver/ The Crescendo wants. In the auction, the corals bid on the journal. If Tolliver had been working with them , he wouldn’t have auctioned the journal but given it up, and they wouldn’t bring their ship to attack/damage his.

-Which means that the journal is relevant to their plan. Could the Curator (being Delmarr and having knowledge of their culture) translate it? (does this mean they’ll have to buy it from uncle joshy)

-And my favorite one: If the first dash is true, then if these vestige ‘’representatives’’ were out of the way, destroying the world would become easier. I think the white corals killed Guidance, and are now after Kodera and Amber (the latter for unknown reasons).

-Finally, is Amber the only one with psychic powers out of Joshy’s students? Is she the only one with astral arms? Guidance appeared momentarily surprised when she saw them.

amber has... three? maybe four? (maybe more idk at least 3 or 4) tattoos in my headcanon and theres def a Guy in the cloaca she could introduce him to when he tells her he wants one. also he is kinda a wimp about how much it hurts

I also love how they are all unhinged in different ways that just really shoed who they are as people.

Zoox was just created as an amalgamation of 6 different ghosts to one. He may have memories, but is 100% brand new to this world. He might not know society etiquette, but his coral body and inate ranger skills lets him know the natural world just fine: eat or be eaten. He attacks a threat because if they are dead they won't be a threat anymore. And it can also highlight his human side to him because he has 6 different memories of dying (now 7). So yeah, he is willing shoot first Hans Solo style if it means staying alive.

Devo's unhingedness comes from inexperience. He lived his entire live in the Church and at the hands of the Hand of Guidance, basically groomed from a young age to fulfill a church position. To survive there so much had probably been repressed including any of his emotions. He is safe enough to finally and fully express himself 100%, good or bad. He has no chill because he hasn't found a middle ground for his emotions yet. He is not experienced enough in navigating how he is feeling because there was never a change for him to do so without being manipulated or gaslit. He wears his heart on his sleeve whether doing all he can to help a girl he doesn't know, or willing to unleash his rage against his enemies (blowing up Gunthry yall?)

Finally, Amber is unhinged because at this point, she couldn't give 2 flying fucks about anything anymore. Think about it, she is the oldest person in the party. Zoox and Devo were born and raised in the ocean, Amber came from the land. She saw the world collapsing around her, the unknown dangers they faced in the ocean, the war against the blinksharks, new diseases, building a new society while fleeing an old one. She is as much a veteran of the old world as she is of shark hunting. Compared to that year of tribulation and uncertainty, everything else must seem so insignificant in comparison. She still has wants and emotions of course, but that year had hardened her to take her life as is and willing to fight for it.

Basically, one is unhinged because she has already seen so much. One is unhinged because he is no longer repressed. And one is unhinged because he is running on animal logic.

God, can I say how much I love how UNHINGED the Ethersea crew is???? Like, the most wild I think we had was either Fitzeroy or Taako, because Magnus was pretty level-headed despite his rushing in, Merle was pretty chill, the wildest the Amnesty cast got was Aubrey and even then she seemed like she was trying to stay chill most of the time.

But like, the fuckin ETHERSEA CREW? We've got a trigger-happy Brinar who seems just as likely to shoot you as they are to hug you, this psychic-shark fighting vet with glowing arms who takes NO shit and an ex-religious escapee who's as charming as he is fucking terrifying. This crew is wild in all the best ways and I'm LIVING for it.

I don't know why my first thought for Amber was a harpoon, but I think she'd probably make something weapon shaped(???) that could be used to kill sharks? blinksharks specifically. but I have no clue what is common shark hunting equipment(?).

I don't think it really fits with his vibe but, being who and what he is, I think Zoox being into necromancy could make for a really interesting story. but realistically I feel like illusion maybe?

for Devo a mix of various schools of magic could fit very well but divination maybe? it'd be interesting.

I feel like Joshy might fit well with transmutation but I have no reasoning for it. just a gut feeling. also I don't know why but I like the idea of Joshy's Relic being a medal. that it could hang around a person's neck and you'd see the physical effects of the corruption the Relic has on them starting on their chest and expanding through their whole torso and up their neck, with like thick dark lines expanding inside their skin, and once it reaches their head and it pierces their heart it takes complete hold of them, and it either kills them then or keeps them magically alive and once the medal is removed their organs start to fail them and it kills them then

aaaand that got dark. sorry op, I haven't really given you any answers, just a few thoughts and ramblings
