"13. What were your least favourite books of the year?"

I can't figure out which year I read Chuck Tingle's Camp Damascus, so it may have been 2023 but I'm still annoyed at how it's only 1/4 of a good book.

(Update: It was March, it counts. Book mid at best, and treated its lone important character of color like a helpmeet for the main character in a way that is shocking at this point in publishing.)

Fever House by Keith Rosson was fun by the end but it took like 200 pages to get going and if I hadn't bought a hardback copy in the city where it's set I would never have made it there.

Also I feel a little bad about this one but hoo boy Most Ardently is a trans.... okay, I should say "retelling" but that implies that there was some new plot or perspective gained by recasting Lizzie Bennett from Pride and Prejudice as a trans man and I cannot for the life of me pretend that was true. And that's all we'll say about that.

"16. What was the most overhyped book you read this year?"

How does a book where the only Black character, ostensibly the narrator's best friend, never once gets to reflect introspectively on HAVING LITERAL DEMON CONVERSION THERAPY because that would detract from him helping the narrator get back together with her girlfriend get nominated for a Best in Horror prize alongside The Reformatory????? (If Camp Damascus has no haters I'm dead. I've gotten more angry at this book as the year/this post has gone on.)

I am once again thinking about how odysseus who witnessed the horrors that the captured women went through (one of his main duties in the iliad was taking the women back home and making sure they were as comfortable as possible and safe because he was the only one trusted not to violate them further due to his devotion to penelope. And in the odyssey part of the reason circe sent him to the underworld was so that he'd have to listen to all these women's stories (before he could talk to the prophet) ). Who was one of the few that saw women as people and respected their space and opinions. And was then put in those exact same situations. I don't have the motivation right now to do a full literary analysis of this (I'll site the sources too) but oh man one day I'm going to write a full essay on this.

What did/do you like about Pharah?

Uh, gameplay-wise, I really love characters in shooters who rely on three-dimensional movement techs. Chaining together hover and jump to stay in the air for as long as possible and keep momentum is so satisfying, and picking enemies off from the sky made me feel like a bird of prey. I was a good Pharah main.

Story-wise, there unfortunately isn't much to canonically go off because Pharah is so underutilized and neglected. Her personality's pretty boilerplate "heroic hero" (she's literally inspired by Captain America).

But it's the crumbs/bits and pieces that I really latched onto. Pharah's a confirmed lesbian; her short story with Baptiste implies she harbors a crush on Mercy (fucking thank you.). She's biracial Egyptian/First Nations. She has major mommy issues, having grown up both admiring and resenting Ana. She's the bridge between Old Overwatch, inspired by the idealized heroes who surrounded her childhood, and New Overwatch. She's one of the only inter-generational characters in the cast; someone whose experiences span the gap, which is why I seriously believe Pharah would make a great main character.

There isn't much to go off of, though; she's a very uncomplicated character (she's a soldier for a private military corporation, lol.). But that just means she's a blank slate character, so I've seen fanfic writers run wild and create some really interesting takes on her. My favorite interpretation of her's a dense, herbo gym-bro type (a lot of her liens are about work outs, exercising, and playing sports) who's easily excitable under her seemingly self-serious, armored visage. We see how she tends to gloat and hype herself up when she's on a streak too, so Pharah definitely has a competitive and boastful side under her more professional and militant performance.

Now Mercy? Mercy is a real complex character.
