Trans Spider Gwen Helped Me Come Out

Though there is no confirmation that Gwen is trans, it is reasonable to assume that she is trans given the level of support she gives, the colour scheme, of her outfit and surrounding world, and her story arc which can be easy analysed as a trans allegory. (It is also a fun headcannon.)

I picked up on Gwen’s transness as I was watching the film. I hadn’t seen any trailers properly or seen any theories on twitter or tumblr but I read Gwen as trans.

Seeing a transcoded super hero explain to her dad who she is and then to watch him accept her, despite everything that happened before, made me feel unstoppable.

It was only a couple days after viewing the film that I came out to my mother and she was somewhat confused but accepting and we managed to book an appointment with a GP (I’m British) and we actually got refered to a Gender Clinic. He was very accepting and encouraging- a complete contrast to some of the GPs I had heard about from other trans people. I hope more GPs will become supportive and disregard their personal opinions to represent the policies of the NHS. I was very lucky to find a GP willing to refer me and I’m very thankful for NHS staff who accept trans people.

Of course seeing Gwen Stacy in Across the Spiderverse wasn’t the only thing that made me want to transition and be openly trans around family and friends. I have also been experiencing heavy gender dysphoria due to puberty no longer letting me appear as androgynous or feminine as I would like.

Gwen being incredibly strong and very trans let me believe I could come out and express myself. Never have I seen a stronger trans character in media I have enjoyed and she’s been very accepted by the trans community.

This is just one example of how representation can help real life people feel confident enough to come out and be themselves in an increasingly oppressive society. I hope for more representation, more acceptance and more beautiful queer people.

Maybe this is selfish but I’m glad Merlin was made over a decade ago and not now. We are starting to see a renaissance in queer tv (mostly mlm admittedly- shoutout to the wlws, aros, aces, trans, intersex, enby & gnc folks) that previously was never dared touched upon explicitly beyond flirty banter and group fandom headcannons. I am absolutely delighted by this. I am one of those people that rewatched Heartstopper season one, fifty thousand times as if my physical life depended on it. However this also means that the more explicit a queer relationship in media is, the less room there is for alternative interpretations. For me, merthur is a queer platonic relationship and Merlin is my little aromantic comfort bean. And until we get to a stage where we have a variety of aromantic characters and qprs portrayed, which is a long time coming let’s face it when Issac Henderson (Heartstopper) is the first human (ie not animated) aromantic character we’ve had canonically in tv (for just over a week also), and yet people still fail to mention his aro identity because everyone’s uneducated and clumps asexuality as a one fits all type of scenario (I digress), arospec and aro alined experiences will be pulled away from any potential comfort to baby aros. The level of comfort Merlin gave me when I first got into it of him just causing chaos, doing magic, laughing at Gaius, being rude to Arthur, eating bread, being besties with Gwen, and just living life fairly relationship free, was and still is massive. I just hope there is more content that can provide that for people. ~~~

having finally watched spider-man across the spiderverse i can say that i am a changed person

it was the most beautiful animation and film i’ve ever seen

the characters were brilliant, both the old ones and the new, Miguel was a fucking dick, Peter B Parker was on thin ice the whole movie

Gwen’s life was just slowly getting sadder every few seconds until she finally got the love she deserved from her father

Hobie and Pavitr were perfect and I have no notes on how they could get better. They were brilliant and I love both of them so much they are very much so in my top three

Miles once again was brilliant, his humor was perfection and i loved his entire story arc. He literally represented how every fandom completely ignores “canon” and also the struggle of people telling other people they don’t belong (and this applies to so much it’s insane and also really sad)

ALSO THE IMPLICATIONS OF GWEN BEING TRANS (i personally now headcannon her as trans but if you don’t that’s fine lmao)

Hobie’s animation was also brilliant, and all the characters were so unique it was amazing

also i’m so glad to see Noir and Spider-ham again even if it was for a few seconds at the end

Do you have any lgbt headcannons for the spiderman characters? In my personal headcannons I would consider Felicia and Mary Jane to be pan, flash and Peter to be bi, and maybe even Harry being bi too as well. I also believe tnat even though Jonah isn't part of the lgbtq community, he would very much support the community and wouldn't tolerate any bigots of any kind whatsoever and Jonah's son and Robbie would also support the lgbtq community too which is cool.

Felicia and Glory definitely date women. Mayday Parker can should will and must be a lesbian jock. and every adaptation's Peter Parker and Miles Morales is trans why not them's the rules

I knew I had more detailed thoughts on the Coffee Bean Gang written somewhere, but it turns out those thoughts are:

MJ: fully self-actualized bisexual

Peter: bi, hasn't really come to terms with it yet but honestly that is way down the list of things he needs to work out for himself

Flash: bi with preference towards men but also thinks that seeing men as hot is a perfectly normally heterosexual gym bro thing

Harry: meeting MJ triggered a bisexual awakening, to his massive relief

Gwen: meeting MJ triggered her bisexual awakening, to her extreme exasperation

and all those boil down to "everyone is bisexual and not great at it"

Don’t know if this has blown up on Tumblr but, in the new Spiderverse film (spoilers), we see Gwen’s room which features a trans pride flag above her door. We also see a smaller flag sowed into her father’s police jacket.

They have been some theories sparked off by this with people speculating if Gwen is trans or just an ally. I find the argument about allyship to not quite hold up given where the flag is located. Someone’s bedroom is a very personal space and Gwen has only had one friend before Miles so it seems like the flag isn’t a social indicator for allyship but something more personal.

It’s perfectly possible that Gwen feels such close allyship that she keeps a pride flag in her room but I can’t really think of a justification for this. This level of passion for allyship would probably come out of a personal connection to a trans person but Gwen has very few people she feels close to (especially at the start of the film), namely: Peter Parker and her dad. These are the only people that could’ve inspired her allyship and it is possible for these characters to be trans, and one or both of these characters being trans would explain the trans flag on her dad’s police uniform since Peter was close with her dad, however I cannot find any further evidence of these character’s transness though it is possible.

It is semi-plausible to say Gwen saw trans people struggling online, and her father was convinced by this to wear a pride flag on his uniform to show allyship, though I personally don’t know any allies who have pride flags in their room.

This also seems like a strange detail for a film that is so purposeful in its visual nuances so I would imagine the reasoning behind this is less convulated than the allyship theories.

Another clue to her possible transness could be in her universe’s animation style which uses blues, purples, whites and pinks- the colours of the trans pride flag.

When I was watching the film, I spotted the trans flag and thought it was interesting. I hadn’t heard the rumours or even watched the full trailer. As the plot unfolded, I made some comparisons between Gwen Stacy’s expierience in the film and my own trans experience; the alienation from society, the anger at the world, the search for a community, the disconnect with family and the eventual acceptance of family. This made me feel a rather intimate connection with the character and her story and I think it’s actually encouraging me to come out to my mother but I haven’t yet (I asked if I could go to pride with friends and she said yes so hopefully that gives me the confidence).

This subtle but poignant dropping of the trans flag into the film, the film’s nature of making every detail significant and the clear comparison between her character arc and the general trans experience gives me the impression that the team behind the film intended for Gwen to be allegorically, or even canonically, trans and, if so, I hope they do more with this since I was genuinely brought to tears.

Whilst we can not prove Gwen is trans, we can’t prove she isn’t trans and, as explained, it isn’t impossible. I read through the reddit post and found a lot of people, unsurprisingly, saying that this is just Twitter making everyone think everyone is trans and she is conclusively not trans but I don’t use Twitter (as a loyal Tumblr girl) or had heard anything about Gwen’s story arc so my experience was as organic as anyone’s experience who came out of the cinema thinking she was cis. This stubborness to not believe Gwen could be trans is ignorant, from my perspective, because there’s no reason to say she isn’t trans. It’s more logical to assume characters are cis because most people are cis statistically but, here, we have evidence for possible transness so it feels more like a Shrödinger’s transgender- where a character could be trans, due to non-conclusive evidence, or could be cis, depending on what the writers (in regards to cannon) and fans (in regards to headcannon and fan works) choose.

Boy do I ever have thoughts about transfem Mike!

I believe in my heart of hearts that Mikes gender expression is through her perfectly pampered sideburns. I think she’s not super confident about anything except her sideburns and whenever she feels imposter syndrome about not wanting a clean “girly” face Davy will like go off like Mike to Gwen about how he’s never seen a GIRL with such BEAUTIFUL sideburns and like making a point to use as many feminine assuming words as possible and then Mike gets all blushy about it cause she does really like her sideburns and she likes getting compliments from Davy. (This headcannon def isn’t because I think mikes sideburns are hot! It is UNrelated!)

She’s also definitely one of those trans people that have a horrible hunch (all of us at some point tbh) and I can almost guarantee that Davy tries to get her to better her posture. Davy also probably tries to lure her out of her comfort zone by saying he wants to do something traditionally girly. Like imagine Davy taking her to get her nails done under the guise that he likes pampering himself (he does but not the point) and then he convinces Mike to do something fancy with her nails and she’s like really happy she actually did it and is getting hella gender euphoria from it.

Also I think Mike would have a collection of wigs. She tried to hide them at first and especially when she was still in the closet but eventually she was like “fuck it, I shouldn’t be afraid in my own home” so she’d Star dressing up in wigs and makeup and stuff at home and Davy would always hype her up and I think Micky and Peter would be very excited to see Mike being comfortable with herself.

I think Mike would probably be in one of those like trans birdwatching clubs. One of those hobby clubs where everyone is trans and I think Mike would only be there because Davy watched how excited she got about doing certain hobbies and he was like “you know there are groups where everyone’s into that” and Mike would get all nervous cause she doesn’t like strangers all that much so when Davy found some like Trans Birding Group he was like “I know who would love this” and he joined the group to try and convince Mike to go and when she was finally integrated I to the group Davy was like “finally I can stop fucking learning about birds ” but he still comes sometimes to see his beloved girlfriend do a hobby she enjoys AND get called she/her pronouns by people who aren’t the band even if she’s not dressed all girly.

(Also I assumed Transmasc Davy and Transfemme Mike because I relate to Davy and just project my own transness onto him. Look at us, just two dudes projecting onto characters from the 60s like god intended.)

Okay now that I’ve hooked you with Davy Jones I want you to listen once again; transmasc Davy, super confident, on the arm of significantly taller not at all confident Transfem Mike.

Davy talks up his gf and himself and Mike is like “well you might be the sexiest man alive but I don’t think im even in the running for sexiest girl alive” and Davy is like “how DARE you talk about my girl like that, SHE is GORGEOUS!!” And Mike is just like 🥺👉👈 “if you say so sugar” 😳

wahhhh this is so cute 🥹 t4t jonesmith it sooooo fun Davy would do such a good job of boosting Mike's confidence and hyping her up!!! Mike would be so insecure when it comes to trying to do more feminine things (i dont really see Mike as the type to change too much of her outward appearance) but if she tried out a more traditionally feminine outfit Davy would throw so many compliments at her telling her how beautiful and breathtaking she is and hes so lucky to have such an amazing girlfriend.

normally i think about t4t jonesmith reverse with transfem davy and transmasc mike (bc he gives me insane gender envy and im projecting onto him) but now im thinking about it opposite and its so cute.
