Dragon Ball Super Manga ch.91-93
Last time, we covered the "prequel" story of Goten and Trunks adopting superhero identities and capturing Dr. Hedo. Now we get into the events of the DBS: Super Hero movie itself. I already liveblogged the movie extensively in September (here, here, here, here, and here), so for the manga adaptation I'll be focusing mainly on whatever changes Toyotaro made to the story.
First off, Chapter 91 opens with Piccolo picking up Pan from school, and when she talks about wanting to be a superhero like Goten and Trunks have been doing recently, Piccolo offers to train her just like he trained Gohan in Dragon Ball Z.
Unfortunately, this is the sort of thing we can expect from this adaptation. It's mostly a straight retelling of the movie, and the little extras that get added in don't really add much to the story. I mean, the movie established that Piccolo has picked up Pan from school in the past, but there was no need to show it. Also, the movie didn't really explain why Piccolo started training Pan, probably because it didn't need to. I think the manga pretty much proves my point, because it attempts to tackle the question, but only comes up with a fairly pat answer. She wanted to fly and shoot hand energy like Goten and Trunks, and so Piccolo offered to teach her and she said yes.
Then we get to this scene, where Krillin's boss in the West City P.D. holds a briefing on the Red Ribbon Army and their plans to recruit Dr. Hedo. This takes the place of the flashback montage that opened the movie, and it sucks.
That montage was awesome, and Toyotaro could have drawn his own version of it here, but instead he did this. We could be looking a Goku punching Tao Pai Pai, or 17 killing Dr. Gero, or Cell smirking like a boss, but instead we're in a boring conference room reading walls of text.
Look at this fucking page! It's awful! A lot of this one serves as a stand-in for Carmine's report to Magenta about Dr. Hedo. I get it, this is a lot of information to go through, and Toyotaro probably wanted to move on as quickly as possible, but part of what I loved about the movie was the way they showcased the characters and visuals during the infodumping. Carmine's report is pretty dry in the movie, but Magenta's office is interesting to look at, and Carmine and Magenta themselves are visually compelling characters. While they talk about Hedo, Carmine shows off his video editing skills and Magenta keeps screwing up his snacks
This police briefing, however, sucks all the fun out of it. This place looks like a hotel conference room with hardwood floors. All of the cops look exactly the same, and why the hell are they wearing helmets and sunglasses indoors, anyway? Krillin's boss, Sergeant Nutz, has some potential, but she has nothing to do with this story, so featuring her so prominently here is just a waste of time.
What really irks me is that the next scene shows Carmine and Magenta talking about Dr. Hedo, just like in the movie, except there's not much for them to say because Krillin and Nutz already covered it all! That's really dumb! We have two scenes designed to set up the plot of the movie, and one of them was in the movie, and actually features the main antagonists. But Toyotaro chose to emphasize the other scene instead.
So the idea here is that the police are already aware of Magenta's scheme to revive the Red Ribbon Army, and they know he plans to recruit Dr. Hedo once he gets out of prison. They also know that Hedo had that disc containing data on Dr. Gero's bioweapon, although I don't see how they could know that, since Trunks couldn't access the data on the disc and it was destroyed before anyone else could try. Hedo told Krillin in Chapter 90 that he memorized the contents of the disc, but he never said what it was that he memorized. This also goes against the storyline in the movie. In the film, Magenta had Gero's data on Cell, and the reason he wanted Hedo was because his own scientists couldn't do anything with it.
Anyway, the police seem to know everything about the Red Ribbon Army already. The only thing they don't know is where the Red Ribbon base is, so they send Krillin to follow Magenta's limo and spy on him. So we get the limo scene from the movie, except Krillin's clinging to the side of the car the whole trip, and then Hedo spots him and sends his cyborg bee, Hatchimaru, to attack him.
The gag here is that Magenta and Carmine don't even know Krillin is out there, and Hedo doesn't particularly care. The scene plays out almost exactly like it does in the movie, but with Krillin spliced in like Jabba the Hut in the Star Wars Special Edition.
Of course, Krillin gets shaken off so the base's location remains a secret, so this whole bit is completely pointless. It's just so dumb. I assume Toyotaro needed to pad out the story for one reason or another, or maybe he just wanted to add some new details so he wouldn't get bored retelling a movie like this. But if this is the best he can come up with, why bother? So far, this manga keeps "expanding" on the movie by answering questions nobody asked, like "Why did Piccolo start training Pan?" or "Why didn't the authorities stop the Red Ribbon Army?" or "Why is Gamma 1's cape red?"
From here, it's a pretty faithful retelling of the movie, which kind of makes the "filler" scenes even more conspicuous. It's refreshing to see the actual story move along without all these pointless diversions. On the other hand, it's kind of dull, because I already covered the movie and there's nothing else to talk about here.
There is some extra stuff in the Gamma 2 vs. Piccolo fight. Piccolo loses an arm, but then he grows a new one and makes it all long to catch Gamma 2 off guard. It doesn't slow him down much, but it's something we didn't get in the movie. I do find it a bit strange how Gamma 2 notes Piccolo's regeneration ability like it's this new data to add to his files. Shouldn't the Red Ribbon Army have all of this intel programmed into Gamma 2 by now?
Moving on, when Piccolo infiltrates the Red Ribbon base, he gets stopped by his superiors, who remind "94" that he isn't assigned to this area, but another soldier offers to switch assignments so "94" can gain some valuable experience watching Hedo eat cookies.
Again, what is the point of this? We're just derailing the story so Toyotaro can waste a page explaining how Piccolo managed to get this far into the base. In the movie, nobody notices or cares that "94" is in the command center instead of the hangar. That's because they're all faceless, interchangeable henchmen. They wear masks and refer to each other by numbers, for crying out loud! This is why Piccolo disguised himself in the first place! If Toyotaro wrote Star Wars, he'd do a whole scene where Luke Skywalker has to rewrite the Death Star's duty roster just so "TK-421" can get reassigned to prison detail. Nobody cares!
Okay now this is more like it. We get to the part where no one can reach Goku and Vegeta because they're training on Beerus' planet, and so Toyotaro gives us a little more of the sparring match Goku and Broly had in the movie. It's not a lot, but this is the sort of thing filler is good for. Toyo also does a whole montage recap of the DBS: Broly film, which is perfectly serviceable, but it annoys me because it demonstrates that he could have done the same thing with the Red Ribbon Army flashback in Chapter 91, but instead he did the briefing scene with Sgt. Nutz. Ugh.
We see the same scene where Vegeta explains the importance of mental training, although when he talks about all of their recent opponents, he adds manga-only characters like Moro, Gas, and Black Frieza. And that's fine, although it's strange when he talks about Jiren and Black Frieza in the same breath like this. In the manga, Vegeta has gotten pretty good at "Ultra Ego", his answer to Goku's Ultra Instinct. And Goku's learned to tap into UI at will. So I'm pretty sure Jiren and Moro aren't really an issue for either of them anymore. I mean, the only reason Goku couldn't defeat Jiren by himself at the Tournament of Power was because he lacked experience using UI, and now he's much better at it.
The point I'm getting at is that in the manga, Vegeta doesn't need to do "mental training" to defeat Jiren because he's already surpassed him. And he might need it to surpass Broly and Black Frieza, but he speaks as though that's their secret, and he needs to learn how to do it himself. I'm pretty sure Broly isn't "relaxed" between attacks when he's using his full power. He was kind of freaking the fuck out back then. Black Frieza might have been doing something like that, but he only hit Vegeta once, so I'm not sure how he could be certain.
So then we move on to the part where Piccolo wishes for a power-up from Shenron, and we just skip the part where Dende upgrades Shenron to do that. The implication here is that DBS-manga Shenron always had the ability to make Orange Piccolo, and no one bothered to ask before. Kind of annoying.
Anyway, while Piccolo and Bulma are getting their...ahem... enhancements, Trunks sees them and calls Goten. They make plans to sneak out and play superheroes again, even though Goten's grounded and he really doesn't need to run up a bigger bill with his mom. I guess this is the throughline for Goten and Trunks in Dragon Ball Super. No matter what happens, Dragon Team tries to keep the boys out of it. It's not just Chi-Chi wanting Goten to study. Back in Resurrection F, Bulma tells the others that she doesn't want them fucking around during the battle with Frieza. And Vegeta ices them out of the tournaments with the other universes because he doesn't want them turning into Gotenks and being dorks the whole time. The Saiyaman X-1 and X-2 caper probably didn't do much to convince anyone that Goten and Trunks have matured.
But they still crave the excitement of being in the thick of things. They know the adults are trying to keep them out of it, and that just makes it more exciting. I suppose this is the legacy of the Buu Saga, where they had to get involved because there was no other choice, and they've had the bug for DBZ mayhem ever since, but their parents said no.
And maybe that's why Goku and Vegeta were so determined to train the boys in the End of Z episodes. Sometime after Super Hero, they came back home, heard about the Saiyamen costumes and the battle with Cell Max, and decided that they needed to be toughened up. Like, okay, you want to go fight bad guys like we do? Stop doing the poses and quit relying on fusion and learn how to do it right. And if the sparring sessions are too hard for you, you can always go back to doing your homework like your mom wanted."
That's why Goten's so frustrated in DBZ 289. He just wants to go on dates or screw around, but his only options are a) homework and b) fight for-ev-er *clap clap clap-clap-clap*.
And now that I think about it, this is where GT dropped the ball with Goten, because he doesn't really seem to have gained anything from that. Hitting the books and getting hit by Goku should have made him a bit more serious about his life, but instead he's just constantly talking to girls on the phone, because that was the only thing GT's writers seemed to think of for him to do.
I mean, they kind of got it right with Trunks, who went into GT with a lot of responsibility and skills. He didn't enjoy his position, but you could tell he'd grown a lot as a person since the end of DBZ.
So yeah, maybe I'm beginning to appreciate Big Goten more than I did before, but this newfound perspective still doesn't do much for this part of the manga. There's just a lot of nothing happening here, and throwing more Krillin, Goten, and Trunks at it doesn't help matters.

Nona the Ninth Reaction - Chapter 31
quick note first of all, would anyone be interested in me also doing a liveblog for 'The Unwanted Guest' as well as these remaining chapters?
and after three books we’re back on the Ninth where this all started. Kiriona’s putting on a bit of a show with the ‘Home sweet home’ thing, but it really can’t be pleasant returning to somewhere she spent an absolutely horrible childhood trying to escape, and without Harrow no less
this might genuinely be the first time there has ever been a dog on the Ninth, i don’t really see the cult of goth priests being big on pets
‘then again, i’m not sure of John period’ yeah me neither, quite frankly even after a book which spends half its page time detailing his backstory i’m still unsure about what exactly his plans and powers are
‘a string of fairy lights wouldn’t have gone amiss’ honestly given Harrow’s general penchant for interior bone design, i think she could be persuaded if the fairy lights were made out of actual bone somehow
ohh holy shit there was a good moment while reading that description of Gideon surrounded by corpses with blood on her sword that i fully thought that she’d come back to the Ninth on some weird revenge mission and just straight up murdered Crux
‘My lady, you have come home to us … at last’ why is this making me feel things for Crux of all people. like he has no idea about Nona, or that Harrow’s lost in the River, or anything she’s been through at all. all he knows is that she left for the First, became a Lyctor, and never communicated or came home again
oh great we’re returning to possibly the creepiest part of GtN with the weird ‘devil’ things. between the duel of the Third and Sixth and possession of Colum Asht, the second half of that book is suddenly becoming very relevant again. while Nona’s been living in a combination slice-of-life/war drama, Kiriona’s life seems to have taken a sharp turn into zombie apocalypse novel. fun!
i’m very intrigued about the little pieces of John and Gideon’s relationship that we get here, notably i think (if i remember correctly) that this is the first time she’s mentioned him as ‘Dad’, seemingly completely sincerely, unlike calling him ‘Pops’ at the end of HtN. and apparently he falsely reassured her that the devils were confined to Antioch, but Kiriona seems to have fully believed him and sounds genuinely upset that he apparently lied about it
wow Crux literally cannot stop hating on Gideon even when he’s actively fucking dying. on one level i can admire the commitment but dude, this level of beef with a literal teenager is ridiculous
‘there was a figure there - dark robes with a pale face’ okay i really can’t figure out what is with the weird stalker figure here. is it Nona having a hallucination of Harrow? just a strange description of one of the nuns?
Pyrrha apparently painted a mint green nursery here a long time ago, i assume for Anastasia’s kid, which would explain the weird remark about helping deliver a baby back in chapter 10. also this implies a version of the Ninth which was at one point not quite so dedicated to the doom-and-gloom-bones-and-death aesthetic, which feels inconceivable to me
well hello Aiglamene long time no see, this is a slightly more welcome return than Crux at least. ngl i really wasn’t expecting to see all these characters from the beginning of GtN again, but it’s interesting to catch up and see how little has really changed there despite all the events of the series
ohhh my god. this is not how i expected a reunion between Aiglamene and Gideon to go. Aiglamene seems so genuinely shaken by the fact that she’s dead, and the fact that she’s apparently very angry at Harrow on Gideon’s behalf, like !! she definitely seems to care about Gideon a lot more than she ever actually let on to her
‘Nona was deeply horrified to see actual walk-around skeletons’ i think Harrow would be mortally offended that anyone in her body could find skeletons horrifying
actually yknow what i take back what i said in GtN about Palamedes, Paul should absolutely not be a therapist with this bedside manner
‘You can’t take loved away’ uh, excuse me for a minute i need to sit in a corner and cry my heart out for a moment. this moment really feels like a summary of a lot of themes in the whole series
ok the final nail in the coffin for my emotional wellbeing at the end of this chapter is that Pyrrha did actually get a birthday present, one that she’ll never be able to give her. here i am completely distraught over cheap moustache rides what have you done to me Tamsyn Muir
istg at least some part of Nona needs to live on. like c’mon Gideon died at the end of the first book and she’s still kicking, Nona can do it too. once again it is nearly the end of a Locked Tomb book and i am in severe denial about probably permanent character death
#i am really really sorry about how long the liveblogs of these last few chapters are taking#i promise i am almost there!#tlt#the locked tomb#the locked tomb liveblog#nona the ninth#lemon natalia reads the locked tomb

s4 episode 4 thoughts
woohoo!! it feels, again, like our separation has been so long, but it has been about… 3 whole days. oh, how i miss the earlier months in which i had time to post episode thoughts every day…
this episode sounds interesting!!! no idea how someone’s thoughts could be captured on film, but we do a lot of disbelief suspension around these parts, with varying levels of success.
wait. hold on. i just saw the description for the episode after this one. what the hell is mulder getting himself into with that. do we need more mulder ex lore? i don’t need that. it doesn’t make me feel warm and fuzzy inside.
putting aside my many questions on that matter to focus on what is here in front of us.
(author’s note post-episode: …. woaghhh. scully…)
in all honesty, having processed my thoughts, i think this one was just a LITTLE bit too intense for me. which i recognize is okay, and to each their own. but i need to speak my Truth.
liveblogging commences below
we begin with this sketchy looking dude, who is being rude as hell to a woman putting on lipstick before getting a passport photo taken. god forbid a woman want to serve… then he says to act natural while not acting natural himself. HYPOCRITE!
she goes in for a passport photo and…. she left her money in the car! she must return to this unfortunate man and go get it. but someone is following her….
he did something to her… and she gets back to the car to “billy”, but someone did something to him, too!! he appears to be dead and bleeding from the ear!! then she falls to the ground and tries to crawl to safety, but the mystery man in the yellow rain jacket comes back for her….
and the man in the photo store looks at the passport photos, but despite taking just a standard headshot, he sees the woman’s dying face in the images!!
oh. that is an unpleasant day on the job for such a nice seeming man.
this intro always makes me laugh... i’m sorrrrryyy the ufo pictures just remind me that this show is fundamentally unserious
scully and mulder are rolling up to a town in michigan, while he asks her for any thoughts on the case. it appears this woman was abducted three days ago. and billy was punctured in the brain. yuck.
okay, so her name is mary. and this poor pharmacist…. he has to take people’s pictures, and give them drugs, AND deal with this nonsense
they are at the pharmacy where the “druggist” (they keep using that term which i have never heard before) is showing them his camera, which he keeps under lock and key, and i notice he has some fun candy in the background. but i assume things are not fun at this time for him.
scully wants to see the camera, and mulder takes a step back to let her pass. it kinda looks like he does that thing where he touches her back, but it’s hard to tell. and once again for all readers, that thing where men touch your back is only attractive when it’s mulder to scully and not between some randos!
scully notices something on the pharmacist’s foot, and also that the film is out of date. she is always noticing things. one of her many lovely qualities.
mulder calls the pharmacist “bruno hauptman” and i don’t get that reference so i do what i do best: go to wikipedia. oh! bruno is the guy that was executed for kidnapping the lindbergh baby. i don’t know why i thought that mystery was unsolved. i guess it’s because the article is saying it was a heavily criticized and debated case. huh, a mystery for another time.
anyway, mulder is saying this all tauntingly with his stupid beautiful mulder smile, but scully is saying yeah, this nice old pharmacist doesn’t look like a usual suspect.
but she does point out that the film has heat damage, and a heater is right there… “so you think that would make it look like she posed screaming for a passport photo?” <- LMAO MAN LET HER FINISH
BAHAHA she is onto nothing 🔥🔥
“plus, the film is two years out of date” “oh” the- the photographic chemistry could have changed” (mulder nodding) “uh-huh” “the- the dyes fade… they… alright, what’s your theory?” <- BAHAHA love that… you have to admit when you don’t know wtf is going on! i had full confidence she would pull something out of her science-y brain, but sometimes you just don’t know!
(this stupid scene had me giggling, as did her face of resignation)
mulder seems to ALSO have no idea wtf is going on, but as they discuss this, a police officer walks in and says they might have wasted the agents’ time…. what does that mean? did they figure it out that quick?
back at the house of the victims, they meet a postal inspector. okay!!! that’s fun and different. and i pause to write this down, and scully is SO beautiful, i actually might blow up. a full on explosion where once stood me is liable to go down. oh my gooooood.
okay: postal inspector is investigating a mail theft. mary had been working at the postal office, stealing people’s credit cards, and her boyfriend was signing them! oh! very illegal. inspector seems to think she faked her disappearance, but mulder points out that would not explain the stabbing of the boyfriend. also, they have this creepy ass broccoli magnet on their fridge which. bleugh. it did not spark joy.
mulder wants a camera from their house, and he finds one! did he just. take a picture of scully…? oh my god. he said “stand back, scully, it’s loaded” and took one… he didn’t even let her pose or anything… that's so cute... even if it's a little weird to use a dead person's camera from a crime scene... he wanted to take her picture
no, i am all wrong, for it appears he is just… taking random photos. because someone in the 60’s once claimed that he could concentrate really hard on undeveloped film and show his thoughts. uh. press f to doubt.
(man, i want to live in that very brief and exciting moment where i thought he was taking a cute little candid of her again… it was so blissful there)
wait. what da hell. he just clicked the camera a bunch of times and it comes up with the screaming mary photo again and again.
oh… he thinks that someone was stalking mary, and the stalker’s psychic energy altered the film by him coming in its proximity. i didn't realize that was how psychic powers worked but i am listening and learning
scully says that these images had to be doctored, which is, again, a reasonable conclusion, but he asks her to “what if” the situation and just think about it!!! just imagine!!!
cutscene to… someone crawling on the side of the road. it’s mary!!! she’s bleeding from her eyes (?) and not responding at all to the police car arriving behind her.
now she is in a stretcher at the hospital that our agents are helping to steer. they are kind like that. she had a “painkiller cocktail” in her system, but that wouldn’t account for her condition. scully orders a PET scan for her, a term i have never heard before. i love when she uses terms i have never heard before.
they’re putting mary in what looks like an MRI sort of thing to look at her brain. whatever it is, it is clearly very bad, as told by scully’s visible reaction and audible declaration of “oh my god”, while mulder looks at her and asks “what is it”?
(and while i appreciate that this is a sensitive moment for our story, mulder not knowing wtf is going on with these medical things always is a favorite trope of mine, 1. because me too, and 2. he is usually such an insufferable know-it-all i love watching him admit when he knows nothing. humility!)
oh my god… “she has been given what’s called a transorbital lobotomy” <- oh that does NOT sound good… it used to be known as an ice pick lobotomy!!! oh my gosh i’ve heard of that one!! ice pick… eye sockets… i can feel myself growing faint…
but whoever did it, did it wrong… who would do a lobotomy without knowing how to do it the right way???
in the machine, mary is mumbling!! she is saying “unruhe” according to the closed captioning, but it just sounds like faint groaning to me. however, given that this phrase is the title of the episode, i venture to guess that it IS in fact relevant.
a policeman bursts in and says there has been a second abduction, and our agents look deeply sorrowful at this news, seeming to know what will happen next if they cannot crack the case.
oh! now we are seeing the new victim, and whoever took her is in fact saying “unruhe”, and other stuff in german! NO! he pulls out a pick…. fade to black.
WHO in this small seeming town speaks german and has a psychic effect on cameras… ?? i hope this can be narrowed down to a slim pool of candidates!!
scully is going into the next crime scene, where mulder reports that a man has been murdered, and his secretary alice taken. this is not good.
mulder has been looking into what that word alice was mumbling means- first in a phone book, but then as a translation, i guess, because it means “trouble” in german.
WOAH, WHAT?
! SCULLY LORE REVEAL ! she took german in college!!! and knows that the word is more accurately translated as “unrest”!
(oh my gosh, i need to get back into compiling lore reveals at the end of each season like i did for s1…. good thing i take such detailed notes so i can go back and do them for s2 and s3)
((we didn’t get a ton in the last 2 seasons, so i thought of doing one post for both seasons- but the organization freak in me wants to do 1 per season, so i’ll go through them again and see what i can find when i get bored someday))
scully hands him a photo from the first crime scene, but mulder says the criminal wasn’t there, because if he was, he would have altered the photos. scully seems annoyed that he’s looking for psychic photos and not crime scene evidence, but he explains that whoever did this has to be very good, and photos may be their only lead since he doesn’t seem to know he is doing it. but then scully sees something and her eyes go SUPER wide… and she says she wants to show him something.
oh! they find a construction company’s logo at both sites. so maybe the criminal worked at places under construction and was able to kidnap the women…? this theory is brought to you by scully.
he says she might be right, but he is going back to DC to get analysis on the photo. she still is skeptical, but he says that since the woman’s time is running out, that’s all the more reason to analyze the one piece of hard evidence they do have, and that he’ll be in touch.
he must have really cared if he said he’ll be in touch, because usually he just runs off to god knows where to do god knows what.
(and how much time would they even HAVE if he has to drive all the way back??? that isn’t a quick trip, is it???)
the same criminal dude from before is now saying stuff in german and taping alice’s mouth shut, while mulder is back in the photo lab sitting practically on top of this nerdy yet attractive fellow, asking for the blurriness in the image to be reduced. and it reveals very scary looking demon things!
mulder sees someone in the back of the photo… and they get a more enhanced image on the face, but it isn’t clear to me who it is. i felt like i was supposed to know who it was, but luckily i wasn't!
scully is ordering people out to canvas and investigate the employees who may have been working at both construction sites. i like when she does that.
mulder and the lab guy figure out that there is a shadow in the background of the photo from the kidnapper. “he’s standing over her, he means to pass judgement on her, like a god” <- an unsettling thing to say, mr. spooky
scully rolls up to one of the construction sites and i’m thinking, oh please, do not get kidnapped, please please, it’s not something we need today. she’s yelling “hello” and no one is answering... but she hears something…..
it’s a… guy on stilts? it’s the foreman named gerry. oh… could he have made the big shadow in the picture his stilts? but he doesn’t sound german…
mulder calls and says the kidnapper’s legs are unusual, either he’s very tall or he wants to be. stilts man?!?! is it you?!
instead of playing it chill upon hearing this news, she hangs up on mulder, and turns to gerry and says “unruhe”, pulling out her gun. but he uses his stilts to jump across the building! only to collapse and fall. his getaway is thwarted as scully tells him to stop or she’ll shoot, and to prove her seriousness, she does so. but i’m not buying he’s the guy!! sorry my queen!!
NO!! I WAS FOOLED, WASN’T I??? she reaches into his pocket and pricks her finger!!! NOOO! it’s a huge pick in there! like we saw before at the kidnapping!!
is she gonna be drugged from that….
(thankfully, the pick itself did not contain the drugs)
they’re interrogating the dude, and he denies everything. i mean, i guess a lot of people could have stilts and a pick at construction sites. maybe they didn't grab the right fellow.
he says that tool is used to start keyholes in the sheetrock and all fixtures. a good excuse…
but he really does seem confused.
however, mulder brings up that gerry was arrested before, for attacking his father with an axe handle until he spent the rest of his life in a wheelchair. OH! this is not promising.
gerry says that he was institutionalized, which mulder reveals was for a schizophrenic disorder. gerry claims that since his release, he had been taking care of his father 24/7, until he passed away in january. well i’m not entirely sure if that makes amends, but i guess it’s better than nothing?
“and how did you feel about that?” asks mulder about gerry's father's death, sounding very much like the psychology expert i sometimes forget that he is. then he reveals that the same year gerry attacked his father, gerry’s sister passed. connected….?
gerry is staring intently back at scully, saying that she looks troubled. oh! do not talk to her that way.
then mulder comes in with the enhanced photo from earlier, and asks if it shows gerry’s father. he seems taken aback, like it really is his father, and then further taken aback when he pulls out the full photo and asks if those demons figures are what he sees when he closes his eyes. this finally gets gerry to crack and say that he knows where alice is, and that she is safe, “from the howlers”. HUH?
(is it bad my thoughts went straight to a howler monkey when he said that? i was thinking man, monkeys do not look like that at all. you and i have seen some different monkeys, gerry. but no, he does not refer to those types of howlers)
a ton of cop cars are arriving in the woods, to find alice, who is bleeding from the eyes, which can only mean one thing in this context. oh noooo. scully seems horrified and as if she is blaming herself
oh, we get a very charged exchange here. she says it doesn’t matter what is in the photos, or if it shows gerry’s dreams or nightmares, because it’s over, and they couldn’t save alice. she starts the engine, and when i think she’s gonna drive off without mulder, he hops in. i bet that guilt that doctors feel when that cannot save a patient is even worse in her than in usual doctors, because she also has to deal with trying to rescue people from crime. :(
gerry is being taken in and photographed by the cops. but instead of a mugshot, when we see the picture, it’s the guy who was taking him in with a bullet hole in his head. oh! so that seems to confirm earlier suspicions on behalf of mulder.
OH NO!! gerry reaches out and grabs the gun from the cop! NOOO!
mulder points out that the image from that interaction showed the man shot in the head, but in reality, he was shot in his throat. so i guess it’s not based on reality as much as his intentions? sure, why not. and scully says there was a robbery at the pharmacy back where the very first photo was taken. no! our druggist friend!
gerry took all of the film in the store and a ton of drugs for more “twilight sleep”, which is a bad sign. i think i’ve seen this film before…
scully thinks that perhaps he was stalking his next victim at the construction site, and i’m thinking, girl i think he picked out his victim alright, but i don’t think she’s in the apartments.
mulder wants to wait a bit for his photo to come out. so he sends her to pull the car around and i’m screaming NO, NO, DON’T SEPARATE, NOT WITH A GUY ON THE LOOSE WHO LOOKED AT HER AND SAID “YOU LOOK TROUBLED” AFTER DOING 2 DIY LOBOTOMIES ON OTHER WOMEN AND KILLING 2 OTHER MEN! JUST WAIT A MINUTE AND WALK TO THE CAR TOGETHER!!!
but she cannot hear me….
NO! as she unlocks the car, a hand from beneath reaches out and pierces her foot with a needle NOOOO… and it’s gerry and she’s going down and NOOOOOO!!!!
AND MULDER PULLS THE PHOTO OUT TO FIND GERRY WAS THINKING OF SCULLY WHEN IT WAS TAKEN!
he is RUNNING after that car. despite his best efforts, even trackstar mulder is not as fast as a car, yet he follows her and screams her name regardless. until he realizes he will not win this race.
back at the police office, mulder is STARING at that photograph, the one showing scully being taken by these horrific creatures known as “the howlers”. he’s asking for any leads, including “does he have a summer house? a winter house?” which could be seen as desperation for answers or mulder being out of touch with how many people grew up with summer houses, take your pick.
OH! in gerry’s wallet was his father’s obituary. and his father was a dentist… and the name sounds german…
so they go to his old dentist’s office, where they did an ad for the pain medicine cocktail he’s been cooking up. and mulder finds a footprint and a missing dentist’s chair.
NO!! scully is in the dentist’s chair at some undisclosed location. waking up to find her arms and legs bound with a pick on the table and gerry in the distance. she’s watching him…. and she says to let her go.
he begins his german ranting that has happened before the other lobotomies, and she… RESPONDS???? in clumsy german??? she says she has no unrest and doesn’t need saving, but he insists she does??? WHAT!!!
good on her for remembering some words after all those years :,)
he says everyone has some unrest, but especially her. she thinks she must remind him of his sister, and they talk about “the howlers”, who live inside your head, and make you say and do things you don’t mean.
so she turns the tables on this, and says maybe there are no such thing as howlers, and maybe he made them up to justify what his father did to his sister, which sets him off further. OH… so she thinks gerry attacking his father and his sister’s death were related. damn… that’s heavy
she tries to convince him that the “howlers” are just in HIS head, and no one else’s, as he approaches with a camera to try and prove they do exist. because cameras cannot lie!!
back at the dentist’s office, mulder appears to be losing it. mumbling about the 6 fingers the howler had in the photos, and yelling “WHY are there 6?” to no one in particular, as if he can find an answer through sheer willpower. one of the cops is asking him what to do while he looks at the obituary and counts five headstones…. and the father makes 6? sure, if that makes sense to you king!
they’re off to the graveyard while scully is still in a mystery location, with tears in her eyes as gerry shows her the photos he took. he takes the photos to mean he doesn’t have much time left, and tapes her mouth… and oh my gosh, i think of what would go down here if i knew she wasn’t gonna pull through… until gerry hears a tapping and MULDER IS LOOKING IN!! YES!!!
gerry is doing this in a camper van! by the graveyard!!! mulder is peeking in, sees a tooth keychain, and realizes she’s in there!!!! he’s yelling her name, and she’s yelling that she’s in here, while gerry tries to hold her down!!!
mulder’s BEATING on the window of the camper with his hands, and when that doesn’t work, he finds a giant metal pipe and SLAMS it into the window, goes in, and shoots gerry. this escalated quickly, but it was almost not quick enough.
mulder asks if she’s hurt, and neither of them say anything as she walks out, with mulder kneeling down to see that the last photos gerry had taken were of himself dead on the floor. it’s a terribly thick tension that reminds me of the ending to irresistible, but without the tension bursting like it did in that episode with her finally revealing her fear to him. i wish that she did it again this time.
scully is doing the episode wrap up, sounding terribly solemn. she is reporting that gerry had written a diary intended as a letter for his father, including the list of the women he hoped to “save”. and her name is the last entry. she has no explanation for the photographs. but she empathized with him, which her survival depended upon.
“i see now the value of such insight. for truly to pursue monsters, we must understand them. we must venture into their minds. only in doing so, do we risk letting them venture into ours?” (said while there are tears in her eyes, as she looks at the photograph of her being pulled by the howlers)
WHAT THE HELL.
okay, so chris carter… you and i need to have some words.
i have a lot of thoughts. perhaps number one: what if mulder had been 5 minutes later… can you imagine him never being able to cope with that.? oh my gosh. oh my gosh. no, i shan’t imagine. but i’m sure they both were imagining it. and that is probably why she couldn’t say anything as she walked out of the camper van. it was too horrific.
second. this was a dark one. i was giggling at first and then it got really dark. lobotomies… are a hard subject.
third. when the writers make the bad guy have a mental illness, i do feel it to be insulting, because we don’t often get a character where a guy with schizophrenia is just a guy doing normal things like working at the store or going to get his oil changed. no, he’s gotta be up to something nefarious. i wish that wasn’t the case and that these episodes didn’t use mental illness in that way, and i understand that things were kind of Like That in the 90’s and arguably still are in media, but it has been observed with distaste.
okay, final thoughts? like i’ve said before, i believe in gender equality when it comes to kidnapping and rescuing, and i hope that will be evened out at some point. i understand that gerry had a fixation on women for his own personal reasons, but that’s the doyleist vs watsonian debate thing. and i want a 1:1 ratio on who goes about saving the day. although the ratio was uneven in s2, i’m not recalling the ratio from s3, and we’re 4 episodes into s4 with a 1:1 ratio. so i hope that overall, the entire series ratio evens out eventually. damsel in distress is gender neutral
i was actually really invested in this episode, probably because it let us look into scully deeper, and also because the stakes were high, the pacing fast, and the horror a new kind rather than a standard serial killer we get in a lot of episodes.
but… while i appreciate that, i’m not sure i can say i enjoyed it, you know? because even a “scully speaks german” lore reveal cannot save me from the feeling of… something adjacent to fear? not horror as in “ahhh i’m so scared” but maybe a sort of horror as in “stop putting her into these fuckass situations, let my girl have a day off” and also a bit of terrible grief in knowing that lobotomies were a very real thing and did untold harm. and to be clear, i’m not saying that fact shouldn’t be explored and discussed, i just think that for me it seems to provoke some intense feelings that make me want some fluff. now.
deliver it. to my door. as we speak. in fact, here is an incomplete list of things i want to read our agents doing in fanfiction form:
apple picking and apple cider sipping, hiking and sharing weird facts they know about the things they encounter (scully will be all “this type of spider has a unique silk production gland” and he’ll be all “this type of wildflower is used to induce hallucinogenic states” while they look at a pretty view), ice skating (can they ice skate? need to explore that), getting ice cream cones, a visit to the beach, decorating for various holidays, a very serious game night- perhaps uno or some sort of trivia where it turns into a real nerd-off, arguing over unsolved mysteries, more implications of them starting a family together if you feel bold and brave, even, but for those who like it more reserved we can just have an aquarium date, watching a meteor shower, scully attempting to understand his fascination with the various sports of the world by tagging along on an anthropological expedition to a knicks game with him, baking, movie theater trip, etc
well! i have gotten myself so enthused at the idea of them doing silly stuff like handing out halloween candy that i have forgotten all about my initial feelings, which shall surely resurface soon when i go through and edit my notes, but you’re gonna sit there and tell me you don’t want to play dolls in your head of them getting hot chocolate together?
canon? what is canon? c’mere, kid. let’s daydream about them eloping without ever having the “what are we” conversation and ignore the suffering
#i learn a lot about myself in watching this show#including apparently what i consider to be just a bit too much#which is fine and it is good to know these things about yourself as a person#but i would like a silly one now please#let me know if you liked it- the pacing or the concept- or if you didn't#i can appreciate that it was a mostly well-written and compelling episode without having to enjoy it yk?#anyway. thinking about them going to the pumpkin patch.#he's from new england... she grew up at least partially in cali. did they have pumpkin patches there? or apple orchards?#this needs to be explored in fic. expeditiously. with a quickness.#ahh... a nice little daydream to think about.#pls feel free to send me fluff fics without any spoilers!!#someone sent me a few early into this blog and i cherish it <3#juni's x files liveblog#the x files#txf

NMTDaily: Tricking Ben
This does deviate from the watching as aired schedule, but since the Candle Wasters sent out an email for it at this point in NMTDaily, I will liveblog Tricking Ben.
The short film style makes this the only piece of canon NMTD/LLL content that isn't shot in vlog format. Instead we have the omniscient view on characters who don't know an audience can see them. I am still so sad that I will never see any more scenes shot like this for these characters, because that's the only way I'd have gotten to see all the serious Beadick conversations in Lolilo that I wanted to see.
The film still starts with a fakeout vlog beginning, which is interesting. This is the only time we ever see Pedro independently starting to make a video himself, apart from his appeal to John later on in NMTD, and of course it's to show off Balthazar's music.
HOW is Balthazar allowed to just start playing guitar in the library? How are the boys allowed to have a loud conversation in the library? This whole part is just an exercise in suspension of disbelief that a librarian didn't yell at them.
I like that the colors of the Tricking Ben title card match the colors on Ben's shirt! Fun little detail.
Ben is very awkward around Hero here. They're not yet the friends they will one day be. Aww.
"I bet he has your name saved in his phone with little hearts around it." Yeah, and I bet post-NMTD Ben will have Beatrice's name in his phone with little sparkle-heart emojis all around it!
Ahh, Claudio couldn't meet Ben where he said they'd meet, because then he'd have to walk him right into the conversation instead of letting him overhear it. I see.
Ben is so confused, poor baby.
The books are an Easter egg! The one on the bottom of the stack is called "Benediction", and the next one up is "The Dating Game", I think? The next one up is called How to Love, and the top one is clearly a romance novel by someone called Catherine Coulter, though I can't make out a title. Google says she writes romantic suspense and historical romance. Fitting.
Was that girl looking at books the same actress who played Claudio's new girlfriend in Lolilo? It looks like her. Can you imagine going to the same school as the NMTD crew, hearing all the gossip about what happened to Hero, and then still choosing to date Claudio the next year? Damn, girl.
It's definitely her, that's why they have her say hi to Claudio and Claudio run away from her awkwardly!
Claudio is hardcore panicking. He is not good at being sneaky. So that'll be the other reason he couldn't see Ben face-to-face before the overhearing happened- he wouldn't have been able to act normal enough to avoid making Ben suspicious.
"You know how everyone's unnecessarily obsessed with you?" OMFG the song is An Ode, this is not a drill!!!
Ben just drops his entire bag next to some random kid before going to hide? Take that with you, you don't know when you'll be able to go back for it!
His immediate panic face is excellent, lol.
Here is a gifset I made commemorating Ben's excellent faces in this video. It's basically my analysis of all his faces right in one post.
Leo saving the day! Claudio blurted out that thing about Bea making a vlog, so of course the first thing Ben does is get his phone to look for the video. And Leo thinks fast enough to clarify that she never posted it. That could've totally compromised the plan.
Claudio is SO bad at this.
The book that falls on Ben is called L-L-L-Loser, a Lolilo reference.
John is here! I love how he looks up, like, "Is this intel I'll need for my Plan? Oh, no, nevermind."
There are so many other people here, how did this conversation not get reported back to Beatrice? I bet it's because people who don't know her are wisely too scared of her to bring it up.
"Ben is so brave, and funny, and tall, what shall I DO??!!" Matthew J Smith is the MVP of this one, folks. Hilarious. Also, why would Claudio's first thought be "brave"? Ben hasn't done his brave thing yet, and it's standing up to Claudio!
Okay, thank you, the librarian DOES yell at them. Realism.
I just can't get over how terrified Claudio looks right now. He is so stressed. He looks like he thinks even moving a muscle will blow the secret right now.
I will never get over Ben hiding in the tree in this bit. He has to know they could see him by just turning around. Comically bad hiding place.
The way Ben is holding himself as he sneaks over to the tree, too. It's like, "if I just make myself small and quiet they won't notice me." You are too tall for that, honey, it's not helping.
He did remember to go back for his backpack, though!
It's cute that Balthy and Pedro's outfits match! Red and blue!
Balth is so bemused by Pedro asking about and complimenting the chord he's playing, aww.
Ben's like "SHIT no if he texts me they'll hear my phone!" The facial expressions in this video, truly gold.
His shirt brings out his eyes. Even when they're bugging out in panic, lol.
Awww I love how sad Ben looks at the idea that he'd ruthlessly tear Bea apart for liking him. In my gifset, I summed it up as, "No, I wouldn't enjoy hurting her, and I'm sad you all think I would." <3
"Poor little Ben just can't see what's right under his nose." Says Pedro, while sitting right next to the boy he doesn't know he has a crush on. And while, from Ben's point of view, not realizing Ben himself is right under his nose (or above his head) as well.
"She's so smart." "Yeah, except for loving Benedick." We love lines adapted directly from the play!
"Having a crush can be a nice thing, though." "I don't think it's that kind of crush, Balthy-boy." This makes me so incredibly sad, because it HAS to be foreshadowing to Lolilo and how Balthazar's crush on Pedro goes from something nice that feels good to something incredibly angsty and drawn-out and painful for both of them. :(
Ben's watch going off and the boys pretending not to notice, lol
Like Hero and the girls' conversation for Bea to overhear, the boys' conversation also involves pretending to consider telling one person about the other's crush, then deciding they shouldn't interfere.
I do love imagining the boys pitching this whole thing to Leo, though. And Leo being all in because he and Hero have been saying to each other for months that Bea definitely secretly likes Ben.
Ben sneaks off with the MOST ADORABLE little smile! He loves her! Awwww I wanna squish him!!!!
Hero and Claudio debrief and Claudio calls her a legend for stealing Bea's phone. It hurts my heart how cute they are right here. There are no undertones of Claudio's possessiveness and misogyny present, they're just two kids who like each other. If they'd gotten together after Claudio grew up more and unlearned some stuff, they might even have worked out. :(
Of COURSE Bea has Ben saved in her phone as "Dickface". As soon as they get together I bet she changes it to read just “💕Dickface💕” 😆
Shut UP the end credits music is the instrumental to Way To Tell You!!!! Beatrice’s song for Ben! Ending with an acknowledgement that her feelings for him really do turn out to be real!!!
The comments say there’s also an instrumental of Beatrice You’re Vivacious near the end of the short before the credits, which is precious too.
Oh my god, end credits shot of the books, and the historical romance novel is called THE DUKE!!! Amazing. Also the How to Love book is by Katie Cotugno! I’ve read one of her other books, it had bi rep and I liked it a lot.
Harriett as Director of Photography! I love that these projects gave her a place to learn she prefers to be behind the camera and practice that. I hope she’s doing well.
The credits end on a picture of Harriett and Jake hugging, NO ONE TOUCH ME
They had the sweetest friendship and I hope they still do. Angels.
I am now in mourning again because this is the last time I ever got to see Benedick Hobbes on my screen, and the last time I ever will, so far as I can guess. *cries forever* MY BABYYYY
You all already know I have no chill when it comes to him, don’t look at me. *burritos up in a blanket to sulk*
No but I love Tricking Ben so much and I am so glad they made it for us!!!
Wait, shit, since when did TCW have a patreon?! I’m sure it’s defunct now, but did anyone used to subscribe? Were there any good extras on there? DID I MISS ANY BEADICK CONTENT????!!!!
Comments roundup: Balth was the first to play off the Ode as a joke here; Ben’s “what? What?” was a Tenth Doctor reference; just so much love for these characters and series; Matthew J Smith responding jokingly to a Claudio-centric comment!

Here she is!!!
HIERODULE HAS ENTERED THE BATTLEFIELD
with both Scything Talons and twin Bio-Cannons to bring to bear, the Hierodule Bio-Titan is a walking nightmare, whether it's the Barbed or Scythed variant.
I used 12 paints to colour this model, starting with a spray primer similar to Vallejo Bloody Red.
I tried to basically liveblog the process of painting this model, but for anyone interested anyway, here's some
~Paint Recipes~
okay so those were a lot of fun to make but obviously i don't paint each separate part fully before i move on to the next, my process looks more something like this;
1- RED with a spray primer. i bought the "Bloody Red" bottle i have because it's close to the primer colour i have which i bought from michael's.
2- Mechanicus Standard Grey all the shell bits
3- Yriel Yellow all gun bits and mouth parts, often twice if it needs it since that's a Layer paint, not a Base paint, so it's less pigmented.
4- Two coats Fuegan Orange in the mouth area to really get it lookin squishy and gross
5- Corvus Black talons, teeth, hooves, spikes, etc.
6- Hexwraith Flame the gunparts, may need a drybrush of Yriel Yellow again after to keep it yellow enough, since green is a cold colour and doesn't compliment the reds and oranges in this colour scheme
7- NULN OIL EVERYTHING. THE WHOLE MODEL. ALL AT ONCE. not including the mouthparts, that's already sufficiently shaded by the Fuegan Orange and wouldn't benefit from a black shade.
8- Drybrush Warplock Bronze over all the red parts. I'm kinda on the fence on whether this step and colour are really a good addition, it adds some variation and shine/highlighting to the colours of the carapace that i think improves it?, while also darkening the overall colour in a way that I like.
I took a photo of this step while I was doing it because I had the thought of that nobody not actually holding the model would really be able to tell the difference
front half without bronzing, back half with.
9- model's done! basing time~ For this base, I started with a coating of Leather Brown, because that's what would be showing through the cracks of the Crackle Paint
10- I experimented with using both my technicals on this one, so I started with applying two Mud Puddles of the Stirland Battlemire
11- after the battlemire mud dried, the rest got covered in a very generous coating of Agrellan Earth, so it would crackle nicely.
12- Stirland Battlemire and Agrellan Earth are... very different shades of brown. to even them out, I painted over the mire with Leather Brown, and drybrushed the earth with the same.
13- the final step of any model that I paint, and what i use to signify to myself that the model is done, is the base band! i like to use Corvus Black because its nice and neutral, but for my models that I have multiple with different loadouts such as tyranid warriors, I've been considering adding coloured stripes to the base bands to help identify individuals more easily.

Liveblog - Dofus, livre 1 : Julith [PART 4]
"BOUBOL"
Besides the fact that I think Joris is threatened by Lilotte's presence, I think Lilotte is a bit jealous of Joris's position in life. He's just like her... but luckier. He has a father he has a very close relationship with, yet he's judging her from his own, somewhat privileged position.
I know this scene is probably just about showing that Joris has speed and strength atypical for normal children. I just like reading into things.
Just looking at this makes me feel suicidal. You know what? Fuck this. I am stealing this translation. I remember someone else doing one.
I can't translate the second page because it's too much. Just too much.
Babygirl your haunted stares have bewitched me.
This still says "BOUBOL", but it now also seems to say "SUPG SORDES". Unless I'm stupid. It's kinda hard to understand because some letters are atypical.
Joris 320 years later when he finds one of his hand written self-insert fanfics of being Khan's coolest most beloved right-hand arm man woman silly rabbit and getting a single kiss on the forehead (with roses straight from Shoujo Manga drawn on that page of the manuscript): I am going to kill mys——
I think that Joris is at the age where Kerubim could fucking tell him a single thing. Like literally any single thing to give him context.
"Something dangerous is going on, the world needs saving! And to save it, I have to leave, and you have to guard the store." or "Someone DIED. (a lie, but the situation is just as grave, so whatever)"
But no, he just leaves, without giving Joris a single idea of how serious the situation is, despite it literally concerning him and his safety. The Kerubim Crepin AAA+ parenting.
From Joris's POV, it's not like something urgent came up, something dangerous, — it's that Kerubim "forgor :3" again. As he always does. He even calls it an errand. Who the fuck calls a dangerous situation an errand? Kerubim "dangerously addicted to lying to my son about how bad things are" Crepin, that's who.
The way he starts out angry and just ends in a ":(" is just... heartbreaking, man.
He tries to appeal to his maturity and desire to please, but from Joris's POV, he's been doing a lot of favours for Kerubim his whole life. And in response, this guy can't even go and have fun with him at the stadium. Two times now, actually. It's almost like he just promises him things so he'll shut up, and never goes through on purpose.
We know it's not like that for Kerubim, but I understand why Joris reacts the way he does.
Very cute ad.
Dofus livre 2 when Simone comes into the room to beat everyone who wronged her little nephew to death:
youtube
(Joris felt awkward about going to her and Julie with the whole "everyone is dead" issue for the entirety of livre 1 bc of their Out-of-Town Octopus Barbecue plans)

Season 2, Episode 2 Liveblog
Teaser:
Good lord the WLW Agenda on that girl! flawless, no notes
Oh Rand honey, your heart is in the right place but your hands are not
How long, Selene? How long EXACTLY?
Rand is here and he’s having a bad time
Rand made fun of Mat for wanting to pay rent by sleeping with the hot innkeeper, but here he is, doing just that!
Oooooh the Foregate! Oh, this is interesting! Rand the nerd is always researching, and I guess he’s researching madness.
Lmao Verin is such a smartass
Moiraine you are being such a regular ass right now
Eeeeey it’s the fly trap! That’s a neat little book cameo. Oooooh and the dead Fade too.
Oh yeah I was waiting for someone in Cairhein to give Rand shit for looking like an Aiel 😅 gonna give that guy even more PSTD
Ok, looking at this guy’s waffleknit bathrobe… Donal Finn is RIGHT, Mat has been wearing a bathrobe this entire time. I want him out of Liandrin’s weird torture basement and into some fancy duds immediately!!!
I bet this guy reminds Rand of Tam, assuming he knows Tam’s backstory
Wow who vets these employees?
Liandrin like ‘I’ll just pocket this deadly poison don’t mind me”
I am here to watch Nyneave Heal and to make snarky comments about Liandrin and I have paused the episode so I am temporarily out of snarky comments about Liandrin
Oh I like the Accepted sleeves
“Men who can channel are not a disease” You tell her, Nyneave!!!
I don’t think they should let Liandrin teach Accepted either >:( also lol @ thinking you could stop Nyneave from being a Yellow, that ajah has her name all over it
…honestly I’m with Mat, we just saw her palm a poison and Liandrin doesn’t give anything nice to men without an ulterior motive
Ok I laughed at Mat’s choreography
I really hope he’s breaking out and not breaking into A Secret Dagger Chamber or something
Oh Elayne you are about to get a shock
Oh Egwene’s face was PERFECT
“You know, some of the greatest pairings have been between novices in adjacent rooms” Good lord the WLW Agenda on that girl! flawless, no notes
I would also be like ‘yeah yeah’ if a Green told me the Last Battle was coming, tbf. They’re the Apocalypse Prepper Ajah, you gotta take it with a grain of salt.
Love the canon detail of Nyneave never giving Aes Sedai their honorifics
Watch Nyneave discover Mat’s oubliette but he’s already gone 😂 (my guess)
BIG FISH
Oh Verin :D
Uh oh, I remember this part with the Trolloc mask.
Oh Rand honey, your heart is in the right place but your hands are not
Lmao she does not ever stop
This is not femdom!!! Illegal illegal red alert 🚨 🚨 🚨 Robert Jordan is rolling unquietly in his grave 😡 although I guess Selene got what she wanted so maybe it is femdom 🤔
Hah, I was wondering how Elayne got away with fancying up her room.
Liandrin loves someone??? OH SHIT that’s her son.
Awwwwwww we needed Min and Mat bonding and this is giving!!! I love that the show really shows how these people are friends
Mat is sharing his spoon, my heart ♥️
Moiraine like ‘oh god shut up, fine’
I do love the pond story, straight from New Spring :D
I cannot wait for Mat and Min shenanigans!!!
I was not sure about Donal b/c I loved Barney, but he makes his eyes sparkle & the little half-smile is pure Mat, so I’m sold
Ah Mat, you’ll change your tune on knowing the shit headed your way, if only so you can better dodge it
Awwww stabby??? No no stabby!
Lmao Selene he absolutely can hurt you
How long, Selene? How long EXACTLY?
Oh my god Elayne making hooch in her dorm room is the canon I never knew I needed, she absolutely would
Accepted Test! Accepted Test! *bangs on the table in rhythm*
The music in this series is so gooooood
Lan don’t read that, it’ll give you nightmares
Moiraine like ‘I knew you were the one when I could abandon you and you’d survive’ but a) you could not, Lan’s deathwish is So Big and b) I see Moiraine’s mentorship strategy at play here lmao
Moiraine is absolutely trying her best to platonic lifebond break up with Lan
(And ‘we were never equals’ is not a denial)
The battle sequences feel very RJ- chaos, impressions, brief intense focus
I would NOT want to piss off Loial
Also I only JUST realized it was the Seanchan a beat before the damane showed up, b/c I recognized the Samuri-ish armor
They all have baseball bats!!! This is so funny to me, I’m sorry, but then again what is more American and Japanese than baseball bats? (Besides imperialism)
They look so scary!
Oooooh American accent! Not Texas enough but still
Damn Rand, did you intend to take his job? Yeah, ok, I see you did. Damn, that’s cold! On par with book 2 Rand tho

how do you get so good at analysis? ;_; i'm really dumb and take things at surface value, which i've been fine with up until now but seeing you read umineko so deeply makes me kinda like.... jealous isn't the right word? that sounds too spiteful. it just makes me feel like i'm missing out on a more fun way to experience things. but it seems so daunting i don't even know how to start. to me it seems like picking out every detail and exaggerating it as far as possible but it's obviously more refined than that because you're able to keep things together thematically and make some good theories. do you have any advice for it?
Hi, anon!
Don’t worry, I don’t think you’re being jealous/spiteful with this ask. I also used to want to write analysis on things because they seem fun, and actually this is my first proper try at it! I think I’ve said it before but if I’m not careful I’ll binge everything on first watch/read and miss details. (This is why I rewatch Utena every other month). So yes, I know sometimes I’m grasping at straws but that’s because I’m actively squeezing everything I can out of a page/scene.
I think what sets this liveblog apart and the reason I can pick up threads/themes is that Umineko seems very upfront about what it wants to say.
「MORE THAN ANYTHING ELSE, EVERYONE WANTED A LOT OF MONEY RIGHT NOW…!」
Utena is the same in that - even though people say it’s too symbolic - I think the fact that it bares its inner mechanisms for all to see is a huge kindness. If everything means something else, or represents both itself and a larger concept, then a show where everything is allegorical is actually discarding layers of obfuscation.
I think a good place to start to Notice Themes is at the very beginning.
The Golden Witch invites you to take things easy and accept them as they come, but The Revolutionary Witch tells you that - in any story - the first introductions matter the most.
Up until now, Umineko has drilled inside our heads again and again, repetition after repetition, that the Ushiromiya’s Western schtick is a product of Kinzo’s reverse weeb affectations. He started many of the “traditions” that seem so inescapable, he invented the name for the fucking chair he sits at the breakfast table and the order of the seats according to his own patriarchal standards.
His Western obsession is tied very obviously with his “black magic” obsession and he even gets angry when you don’t call them “grimoires” because part of the charm of magic is that it’s foreign and cool. He speaks of black magic when ranting about his urges to sexually abuse a dead Beatrice, all his children speak of Western things when recalling their own childhood and abuse.
The only exception to this is Kinzo’s Japanese sword - both a true object and a phallic symbol that doesn’t deny itself its origins - that he uses to spank Jessica’s naked butt.
I feel like, in Umineko, you just need to sit and listen to the characters and wonder at their motivations. But you also need to wonder about the choice of presentation.
For example, Kanon alone in the garden after he left the conversation, being dismissed by Gohda. All he says is “…even me” or something among those lines, very mysterious! But the way this is presented, the camera not caring about the Cousins + Adults but following an actor after he’s being kicked out of the stage? Unusual! Curious! Very interesting! The way the narrative describes it, (paraphrasing here) “you needed to get closer if you wanted to hear the words whispered to his heart”? Why would it be written like that? Who is the narrator speaking to?
So I think - to make an analysis close in methodology to what I’m doing - you need to question what’s onscreen, not in a “this isn’t real” way (it may not be real but that’s not the focus!), but in a “why is this being shown the way it is” way. This is a novel after all. Choices of words, choices of POV, what is described and what’s left unsaid!
Those are the tips from the Revolutionary Witch!

Thank Starkid for uploading VHSCC to Youtube, albeit temporarily, because their site doesn't work for me so I couldn't buy it or any other digital ticket (including Cinderella's Castle for which I was a kickstarter 🥲) and I'm so glad I can still watch it now!!
Anyway here are my thoughts/liveblogging post from watching! I didn't think to do this until I reached the second part and realized I had a lot to say so everything about the new material is retroactively written
I. Hate to say it, but I can't remember a single new song. One reason I love VHSCC so much is because it only took me one watch to remember the songs, they're incredibly catchy and iconic... And the new ones did nothing to me.
In general I didn't really vibe with the new material? I think it's important to note that I don't celebrate Christmas, like, it's not even the main wintertime holiday of where I live so inherently theres a level of disconnect for me with that angle, but I still find some Christmas stories charming- case in point, I genuinely love A Christmas Carol! I know these two stories outside of the lens of Christmas- I'm fairly certain I heard a different holiday version of Gift of the Magi as a kid, and I had the book of The Little Matchgirl as a kid and didn't uh. Really touch it after reading it once because I found it senselessly sad. So like? I'm familiar with these stories, but this version of them really didn't hit me in the way I think they're meant to or in the way the original versions do. I didn't really find Gift of the Magi touching or funny, which I feel like is what they should've gone for at the end, and I felt... Nothing with Little Matchgirl, which surprised me because I was fully prepared to cry.
Actually it. Felt really preachy while also somehow being just completely empty of meaning to me? Little Matchgirl in particular. Idk. The tragedy of it just... Completely failed to land for me when Clark immediately starts singing about uh. Activism essentially? It's like, bro, you didn't even give me enough time to process it or to get sad before you just started preaching at me??? Idk, I just. Really didn't like it. Clark's parts in general were the worst parts of the new material in my opinion, which surprised me, because I did like them in Christmas Carol! Idk, it might be a matter of the stories being too short, so it feels intrusive for the detached narrator to cut in to fill in blanks that weren't there or to hammer down the message, instead of letting the characters and story do it themselves.
I genuinely don't enjoy shitting so hard on the new stuff, but. I didn't really like them and kinda just wanted them to be over so I could watch a show I knew I DID like. I don't think it was all bad, I mean, the acting was fun and everyone's obviously mad talented, but in terms of musicality and story, which are the two things I really loved about Christmas Carol, it felt like a big step down for me. Also, I did like how Scrooge was just. There though, that was really funny
OK! Moving on! From here on its probably gonna be way more positive lmao because I love VHSCC and this is it now!
The smaller cast feels weird with how big the OG one was, in general the different casting is gonna be interesting. The stages configuration is a pretty big difference, but it does feel like, intimate which was probably really fun in person, and I like how they're playing around with it! I'm also less of a fan of this screen so far, it basically added nothing but uh. We'll see ig
Scrooge actually screeching after Clark narrating him doing it was a fantastic addition lmao. It caught me (and seemingly the audience!) so off guard and it was hilarious!! AJ has generally been way less physical than Dylan so far, which I kinda missed, but ngl he completely won me over with that one lmao
Meredith is so pretty, she's nailing it!! As I knew she would but. Still felt noteworthy lol
OK ngl given how Jaime was just. Not in the first half but still credited I was 100% sure she was not gonna be there physically, just through the screen similar to Ali in the OG, so I was actually really fucking surprised when she came out??? Where were they hiding her for the entirety of the first half!!! Travesty!!!
God the spirits are just as attractive a year later (two technically by the time of me watching this, but shh), they're SO good. A stark contrast to Clark's awful wig, actually, my god what is up with that thing???
Fuck yeah, physical chains!!
I wonder why they changed some of the interstitial lyrics? I mean, the snore was hilarious, but this isn't the first change and the previous one didn't have a comedic element added in.
The new choreography is excellent, I'm actually really happy with the stage for facilitating these changes
I'm sorry Curt is too much of a sweetheart and I'm really having a hard time buying him as post-money Scrooge lmao. He eats the singing though! Brian did too, but weirdly enough only on stage and not in the recorded version lmao
Janaya is fr so talented, I'd love to see her in other Starkid stuff!
I miss Corey. Unrelated to where I'm at in the musical rn but I forgot to mention it at the start. Brian is just. A completely different Fred and it feels weird
Best song incoming! VHSCC is what made me fall in love with James- it was the first time I saw him in a bigger role, and I can't wait to see him in Cinderella's Castle
Just wanna clarify: Brian's Fred is still fun, he's just like, different from Corey's? He's more... Sarcastic, if that makes sense?
Every year that goes by makes Brian playing Tiny Tim funnier
Thief Brian is giving Junior vibes lmao
I knew about Della and Jim replacing the gay couple so that wasn't surprising, but a nice cameo nonetheless, especially with how Scrooge bought Jim's watch lmao
Okay the "screen" aka what seems to be a sheet of fabric being projected onto is just. Completely pointless and useless aside from minor ambience. Not only have they lost the VHS aesthetic it had, the actually fun and cool effects just don't seem to be possible with it and it sucks
I do love the rest of the vast staring at and then dragging Scrooge down, that was cool
Is. Is that the ghost of the Little Match girl orrrr...? Are we dealing with an AU situation? I mean, the Della and Jim resolution doesn't necessarily conflict with what we saw and is very sweet too but. This sure raises some timeline questions lol
Matching uncle and nephew sunglasses 🥰
I wish more Starkid shows included the curtain calls, those are always so fun and they feel important to recreate the feeling of watching live theater, even through a screen.
Anyway, I'm done watching now! Final thoughts? Might warm up to the first half upon rewatching (not like it hasn't happened to me with some shows before!), but initially I'm not the biggest fan. I can't say that this rendition of a Christmas Carol is better, but it's absolutely not worse either, and honestly that's all I wanted really. It was still tons of fun, and I liked it a lot! There's for sure a disconnect between the two halves though- heck, even between the two stories in the first half- and they feel... Too different to me, so I can't exactly say doubling the length was exactly... Worth it? One advantage of the OG is that it's short, which results in me frequently rewatching it, and this doesn't really have the same advantage, especially not considering I'll probably only really wanna rewatch the second half Anyway... Regardless, I still wish I could've paid them to watch this last year, it sucks that their site just. Doesn't work for me, so I'm glad that they made it accessible for me here. And now I'm eagerly awaiting Cinderella's Castle!

alrighty, to steal or not to steal! this one is a little hard to liveblog and I'm not going to go through all the options, so I'm just gonna take you through my favorite path and gush about how hot and gay everything is for the most part! there will be a little commentary on other paths but yeah :)
(thats the ile d'oleron)
notes under the cut as always!
for your viewing pleasure in case its been a while and you haven't played.
fun fact- I am also taking us on close to the first route I ever took with this special. I got waylaid along the way by the trick routes and failed a lot, but I'll get us on the path to the first win I ever got. (the best one.)
i was SHOCKED by how good this special was the first time I played through it. I had just joined the fandom, I was scrounging for content in the waiting-for-s3-desert, and boom- there was a SPECIAL? why didn't anyone tell me?
anyway, this is always super fun to do. I've done every single route multiple times and recorded all of them too for the illegal stash but theres nothing quite like playing it.
in the very first episode (and african ice) devineax mentions an amusement park in shanghai. wonder if the two are related, or if VILE just has a shit ton of properties in there?
she did, in fact, get shanghai'd in shanghai.
oh. thats why its set here. ahha i get it
she loves them 🥺
i choose top floor
carmen trusts her grappling hook in a glass building more than I trust myself
girlie walked into that empty steel door locked vault with an indiana jones trap ass looking phone in the middle that maelstrom was talking from and went to pick it up with ZERO hesitation
ah, carmen sandiego and its weird genre of toilet paper jokes during stressful circumstances
maelstrom's exasperated eyeroll and sigh as the married couple bicker
i choose steal for vile
the first time I played this i obviously chose to try to save zack and ivy. since I know that leads to failure now, I'm skipping it this playthrough, but it was quite the shock the first go around! tsonts plays to my little angst loving heart by making you watch zack and ivy and sometimes carmen meet horrible tragic ends again and again lmao
girlie the old you stole the statue of liberty skill issue
i like the glow of green on carm's face here to show her temporary allegiance change and vile's win
the terracotta warriors are super cool im glad we get to visit them
i think the first time i played this option i talked to tigress. since sneaking just gives bonus material and doesn't actually change anything (plus. puppies) im going that route!
i choose sneak past tigress
oh btw i love the little simplified characters in the choices they r so cute
also carmen's quips if you take too long to choose are hilarious and worth waiting for. dodge the cat or stop to chat?
me
subtitles doing the most
i LOVE how bitchy carmen gets in the special she's hilarious. she's very quietly pissed off the entire time and she mostly takes it out on tigress
those slides down the tunnel are sooo smooth
its impossible, as a canon law, to get zack and ivy's names right if you're a villain
i love the two's looks at each other when she steps on the booby trap its just resigned "ahhh shit."
imagine if there had been spikes at the bottom of the pit and carmen had just saved herself sdgjadsgjds
"im the one sitting in the catbird seat right now" oh you
anyway, i'm choosing leave tigress
this is the choice i made my first time playing! i love carmen's sassy ass "i cant hear you! im in a tunnel, bad connection!" line, and i'm not going the arctic circle path anyway so it doesn't matter.
tigress bugshadowing for s4! lots of foreshadowing for s4 in the special actually
the "theyre stunning" followed by that just. crushed look when she remembers what she's here to do augh
he has a beard and a mustache
she so cute
i choose hide and blend in
my first go around I chose to hitch a ride, as, I thought, was logical. I didn't know carmen had access to stopping time, a disguise, and endless amounts of dirt to camouflage her perfectly with the statues in addition to a handy spot to keep her change of clothes. who knew? im going with hide to speed up my run, but I was pissed off the first time i played this let me tell you sjgdhsgdhs
actually, you know what, let me hit ride for a second because I think there's a carmen death at the end of that one I want to comment on
carmen "historical artifacts are irreplaceable treasures" sandiego, everyone
why are vile's names for zack and ivy so shit
oh yeah here we go
the crash landing! I made a post on that years ago but my headcanon was that carmen was so distracted that she crashed and died I think lmfao. anyway no one came outta that one unscathed. k, back to the route!
OH i also like that the format for this is like the old gameshow a little bit with chief's lines at the end. its fun
they really wanted to call this thing "carmen sandiego: vile operative" didnt they. hamlet? was bela in on the naming of this?
cleo's little shoulder shimmies
abby trott's singing voice this episode <33333333
also THE OLD THEMEEEE this whole thing is just a throwback honestly its a lot of fun
carmens eyeroll at "carmens choice" jsadgha
to steal or not to steal: or, bellum and cleo being married old women for forty minutes
i choose cleo's caper
we just gotta get to the gay dance scene as quickly as possible okay
carmen asked for the specification on the eggs so seriously
cleo speaking french. thats it thats the post
some of the lines in this special are a little weird with repetition. carm does it once with the riding with/hiding among the statues in a way that sounds a little unnatural, and she does it again here with "everything i ever steal from vile goes straight to charity, and now they're making me steal from a charity?" the inflection/repetition is just weird, like the emphasis should have been on steal, not charity. idk maybe gina just reads weird
carmen SLAYS in this dress. i wish it was even more extravagent but i get they needed something simpler for the dance scene. still shes hot as fuuuck for the whole part
her leg split is scandalously high btw??
and JULIA GOOD GRACIOUS SHE'S SO GORGEOUS actually thank god for chase never showing his face in here he gets enough spotlight in the choose your own adventure novels
it took me an embarrassingly long time to realize that julia looks different because shes wearing contacts
her favorite acme agent
how did she find out julia's last name i wonder
noooo carmen dont avoid her ur so sexy ahahaha
carmen's voice. when she says scarlet santa rosa. hdhwidw oh boy. also hello, fake name for hospitals and hotels in every fic ever from this point out. we salute you.
player's "oh boy" he knows carmen's too gay for this shit
also good GOD yes we're dancing. only thing we're missing is carmen saying she likes to tango more than she likes to waltz so there we go. gay time
i choose to accept the dance
"do i cut a rug, or put the 'go' in sandiego?" these lines are GEMS
man this scene is spectacular
adoring how miserable carmen looks the entire time she's dancing with this rando. can she do it? yes. does she want to be? hell no
the guy: :D carmen: 🙁
SHES HOLDING HERSELF SO FAR AWAY FROM HIM ITS SO FUNNY
girl if you were any further apart from this dude you'd be in north america
carmen fantasy mind link with mime bomb where she kicks the man to the curb and engages in a techno dance fantasy where she lets her hair down and goes wild, imagining julia argent seeing her and cheering her on gayly is top ten scenes in all of animation history
carmen's hips in the dance have me in a chokehold figuratively and i wish it was literally
the little prance after carmen kicks herself in the face is so gay you're being so gay dude. she imagines julia watching her and she stares directly at her and PRANCES
love the imaginary dance partner guy. carmen's like hm i wish this guy was fun
also THRILLED that the only canon imagination we ever see carmen having is one. being paranoid about a crusty 20 year old shadowsan stalking her and 2. having a dissociative dance fantasy because dancing the waltz with monaco royalty is torturous to stay grounded for
when she takes her hair out like if you agree
THE LEG SLIT SHINES THROUGH HERE WE ARE INCHES AWAY FROM THE TVY7 GOING OUT THE WINDOW FASTER THAN CARMEN DOES LATER IN THE SCENE
that was fantastic as always, sorry you had to sit through me ranting gayly for that long. time for more gay ranting. ITS JULIA!
carmens little moment of panic when julia comes up behind her is always great
man theyre so gay. julia is confident and girl please bestie i love you but this is the ONE time you're wrong
my favorite frame. goldfish julia
the height difference
"so good to see you again" 😌
julia using they/them pronouns win writers did her dirty in the s3 opener
"I will CERTAINLY be relieved once any stolen treasures MYSTERIOUSLY appear at my doorstep to allow me to return them to the proper authorities" she says in the most seductive voice possible, turning and walking away with a look over her shoulder
shes literally flirting you guys
player said woah because even he knew that the usual writers never let julia have that much personality and gaydar
gay abt it. also obsessed with their little hooves
we never talk about how dirty tsonts does you. it leads you unequivocally to believe that tricking julia is the correct option to keep both carmen and her safe. it ALSO leads you to believe that carmen is just going to pull a "WHATS THAT OVER THERE" trick and leave. SHE DOES NOT. DO THAT. SHE LOCKS JULIA OUT ON THE ROOF, STEALS FROM HER, AND LIES TO HER. WHY
anyway first time i played this i tricked julia thinking i was keeping her safe and was so pissed off by the outcome that I went back and trusted her. we do miss a glorious angy jules moment of her screaming "la femme rogue" with ten times less punch than devineaux, though.
all that is to say i choose trust julia.
either way you slice it i managed to wind up in a pickle at a caviar party
MMGH THE TRUST <3
they say trust like three times in this conversation its so. the core of their relationship
YESSS SHE TRUSTS HER DUGHDUHGDJDHEDHJD SHAKING THEM IN MY TEETH
carms little smile mmmmmmmmmm
ah, the cs 3/4 turn
OKAY even though it'll lead to bad shit happening we cannot skip the stash part because 1. it gives us one of carmen's BEST outfits and 2. i have a funny story about it/this is what i picked the first time
also it again leads us to the wrong choice on purpose in my opinion, which i think tsonts is designed to do
shes my profile picture and shes so killer in the waitress outfit god im so gay about it
okay here's my funny story when mime bomb started choking i was COMPLETELY prepared to have an option to save him or continue to go after the caviar and i was also COMPLETELY prepared to let him die i felt really bad about it once I realized they obviously weren't going to let him choke
NOT ON STAGE, PLAYER, ON FOOD
mime bomb singing opera foreshadowing!! while hes choking to death
carmen could give me the heimlich maneuver
mime bomb hairline reveal
everyone just dissipates once they realize they were laughing at a person actively dying
THE SHE
who is also the me on tumblr
the waitstaff wondering why this piece of fish weighs five times what its supposed to and why this one weighs nothing at all
you uncouth ninny
i love the cut from zack and ivy trying to fight to them immediately getting brainwashed they didnt stand a chance
btw where does carmen keep just. changing. where is she going. did she mug a waiter for that outfit and leave them naked in a closet. what
anyway ultimately i choose dash
she so cute when she commit acts of violence on innocent people
elsa is that you
man i love that shot of her putting on the glider. where is everyone though. like did they just think she threw herself off the edge and were like ah well
i love getting to see clips of carmen actually pulling the cord on her glider also her WHOLE LEG IS OUT GOD DAMN
imagine if they had just prerecorded zack and ivy and they were way off the mark. and zack and ivy were just mindwiped already
its my favorite background extra!
also the carmen-in-milan extra who was in dubai was also in the earlier scene
they have one RIGHT IN THE CENTER OF THE TOP OF THE WORLD
i choose steal for vile again becauseeee we snubbed tigress so that would fuckin suck for us. i do really enjoy the trust tigress --> arctic circle route, though (i wasnt even aware there was more than one good ending for a really long time because i always left tigress in the hole lmfao) but shes actually decent. i also like when you leave tigress --> arctic circle because carmen just kicks a solid metal foot thick door. and it hurts. like she didnt think about that one
hell???? in a kids show??? 😲
i like how you can see that carmen appreciates how incredible it is that theres soft tissue intact
another weird inflection thing? she says "attempt to clone-" like shes about to put emphasis on the dinosaur part after, when i feel like she would put emphasis on clone? idk whatever
gremlin bellum is the best
editing carmen sandiego clips to be way out of context is my passion. ugh. im going to hell
montana got such a sad info section honestly
carmen slaying that red eyeliner
OKAY first time i did this i tried to catch the plane, which is what im doing now because...it just adds scenes and doesnt actually change anything. however the first time i did this...you know what, tell you when we get there. here we go.
rip carmen's motorcycle which she somehow had in montana
imagine being the pilot
oh yeah okay. so, the first time i played this i literally fucking thought i had just condemned carmen to a horrific and unnecessary painful death. the glider prevented me from having a full out heart attack, I think, but it scared me VERY BADLY!
and then- alright, by this point, I'd chosen wrong pretty much every single time. the van, the soldiers, the stash/dash, everything. i just fucked up EVERYTHING. so when bellum called and was like YOU WASTED SO MUCH TIME i thought OHHH NO FUCK DID I DOOM THEM AGAIN NOOO. it turns out, you get that scene no matter which path you take. so. whatever. but that series of events got me so scared
TSONTS does more for carmen's friendship with zack and ivy/building relationships with allies than the entire main series and you can fight me on that
she thought you were making a funny 🤨
autistic bellum agenda
first time around i picked el topo! there are fun sides to both- el topo's line about being pawns in a bigger game, but also le chevre gets you a chase scene on a rollercoaster where agent zari tries to run carmen over . ride the cyclone her if you will. both are fun, but for the sake of doing my og path im going to go for el topo!
el topo is such a cinnamon roll. hes excited to work with her 🥺 he hates no one 🥺
"very well dressed company" acmeoffical should put that was their tagline
i think my first go around i hid, so I'm doing that. AgAiN, tsonts leads you to the wrong option. like. obviously running seems stupid if the entire place is crawling with them?? to me, anyway. but. i guess its always right in this playthrough. still choosing hide first because i like to see carmen break shit and get caught
she pulls a dokuso on that one. where did she get a smoke bomb
the cranial dranial. btw the noises on that title card are disgusssting. you miss out on so many good gags if you save zack and ivy from dying. bellum and cleo squabbling. bellum renaming the mindwiper every three seconds
anyway onto the good option of run
and my favorite background acme agent <3
carmen being loud af in those vents and REALLY not careful with that one of a kind priceless bone
behold, carmen sandiego
love how embarrassed zari is jdsgdjsh
girlie fit through THAT grate???
AHH THE JULIA AIRPORT SCENE
love how you can see her little foot sticking out from behind the tourist before she pops out
i also love how carmen very clearly notices julia following her
my favorite bg character again
julias so cute
woah, a mindwiping carmen plot?? thats so diabolical! im glad its possible to entirely avoid that fate for carmen in the canon. yep!
lil. gay julia
its so sad when julia rejects her if you decide to lock her out on the roof. but also hilarious because julia tracks her through the airport LITERALLY just to break up with her on her own terms. shes like oh i gotta find carmen and carmen is like hi and then julia just leaves
also the dont trust julia ending is literally the worst ending in the game and its a crime that that symbolism didnt carry to the main series. so angsty and good though i really like that scene
ALSO also the carmen getting mindwiped bad ending?? THATS how carmen should have reacted in s4. shes struggling, shes trying to avoid it, but like?? in the CANON MINDWIPING carmens just like grgrggrgr im biting this. not going to change my behavior of yanking on my wrists as maelstrom reveals a terrible fate to me just going to keep looping "struggle animation" like an npc
sorry. im salty about that. you can tell. back on track to the gay ending.
UM. SURE? shes so cute
PAPER STAR'S THEME!!! i love that being woven into the score
juliaaaa in the hat and coaaaat
zack and ivy's banter in the evil shack is great
oddly specific subtitles?
carmen got the perfect circle capabilities of luz in here
how did she just move that piece of roof aside instead of it falling in help
"since when does carmen sandiego wear glasses" REALLY thats the ONLY thing that looks different about her? not the. race change. or the dark hair pixie cut. or losing half a foot of height
zack hugging carmen <33
man im hitting my image limit for this post help
also carmen just shoving zack away is so funny shes not even gentle shes just like BOOM lets jet.
that vile grunt slamming face first into the helicopter my beloved
"not of helicopters im not!" zack says, flying the helicopter flawlessly
"here's looking at you, crew" is a reference to the 1942 film casablanca which was the first location carmen visited outside of vile island. in this theory i will prove that casablanca was the first movie she ever watched and-
how do you know where julia lives, huh carmen? dont you know thats GAY?
HHAAIHUDGHGGHDSJ i love this ending so fucking much arhsghaggdrg. im carmen sandiego and im here to make your day. she's wearing the hat and coat. shes so cute theyre so gay et cetera et cetera
that gayass little display carmen does for her
the fucking. bouquet of red roses oh its carmens color no shut up she did NOT have to do that that was EXPLICIT. ALSO JULIA BLUSHING ABOUT IT WHILE SHE THANKS HER AND HOLDS THE BOUQUET IM GOING FERAL OVER THEM TSONTS DID SO MUCH FOR US
BONUS SCENE TIMEEEEE
what an absolute treasure i love the recreation of the old rockapellas song. they got to correct their czech republic inaccuracy wheeze. oh to be a geography show during a time when geography isnt staying the same long enough to make content about it
zack submitting himself to chinese water torture just for fun
the vile operatives ajdgshdfaghds
ABBY TROTT <3 love you and ivy's dancing and ivy singing and everyone dancing and everyone singing pop off slay the whole nine yards
obsessed with that little arm move on "berlin down to belize" what was that
carmivy canon
tigress's shoulder shimmies and pinchies of the glider yes
cs color theory ON LOCATION + the gays being gay
ive never understood the mekong from the jungle line honestly. did she steal the whole river. unify east and southeast asia. i guess so. if she can steal the statue of liberty why not
puberty didnt hit player like a truck it hit him like a rocketship
brunt's little jig as she goes to punch the living daylights out of carmen <3
SHE PUT THE MISS IN MISDEMEANOR WHEN SHE STOLE THE BEANS FROM LIMA <3 thats my favorite line
GO BORIS SLAY
i also love zari's line
"A moving violation is any violation of the law committed by the driver of a vehicle while it is in motion" julia literally knows carmen is a cant drive gay
mime bomb's one line <3
ACME SPELLING OUT ACME LIKE ITS YMCA IS HONESTLY SUCH A FUNNY VISUAL GAG BY THE WAY
once again, ABBY TROTT'S VOICE
tigress dances like i dance. badly
GAYS BEIN GAY
SLAY CLEANERS GET IT
the little faculty dance showcases is also fantastic. get bellum'd. maelstrom's doing a mickey mouse clubhouse ass dance. cleo is slaying
the mystery: is coach brunt saying "let me know" or "lambkins, oh" its the first one but i thought it was the latter for a long time
THE GROUP SHOT!!
never noticed the mechanic waving her little wrench around. there are a bunch of cute motions like the gays being gayer, a cleaner singing into his mop, and ivy pumping the air with her fist
anyway, SORRY! this was long af! my bad! it's a lot to cover and. kind of hard to liveblog when there are so many options. if anyone got this far, i hope you enjoyed it! see ya next week for season 3!!
and, yes, i was later again. more late than usual, actually. i've been busy with art fight >:)

Super Dragon Ball Heroes 1-6
We’ve reached the final (planned) stop on the 2023 Dragon Ball Apocrypha Liveblog, and it’s the most apocryphal series of all, the Super Dragon Ball Heroes web anime!
Here’s the deal. In 2010, Bandai Namco published a trading card arcade game called Dragon Ball Heroes. Then in 2016 they updated it to improve the user experience, and renamed it Super Dragon Ball Heroes. A manga adaptation of the game began in 2017, and then in 2018 Toei began this “original net animation” to promote the game.
My engagement with the DBH franchise has been superficial at best. Mostly, I just rock out to the theme songs when I find them on YouTube. I’ve never played the games because I have no idea where and how to play them, and the gameplay doesn’t look all that compelling to me. I think some of this stuff is only available in Japan? I’ve never bothered to find out, and I don’t see that changing any time soon.
And yet, I’m somewhat familiar with the story mode from the games, as they involve the Time Patrol, which I wanted to research for the fanfic I’m writing, part of which serves as a prose adaptation of Xenoverse 1. I even wrote a guest appearance with several characters from DBH, and I might use them again down the line. Also, the manga contains some backstory involving Towa and Demigra, who also appear in Xenoverse 1, and feature heavily in my fic. So I’ve read some of the manga, and I watched some of the web anime, but mostly for the purpose of scraping them for useful lore.
From what I can tell, the entire thing is a mess from a story perspective. The game has been around for 13 years, so it’s clearly a success, but the manga feels completely removed from the story the game tries to tell, and the web anime seems to go off in a completely different direction from that. At its core, Dragon Ball Heroes is mainly about answering the question “Wouldn’t it be cool if you teamed up with Super Saiyan 3 Vegito to fight Dark Demon Baby Majin Hatchiyack?” The answer is obviously “hell yeah”, so I don’t understand why we need a manga and anime version to tell stories that don’t really touch on what makes the game fun.
Mostly, I wanted to run through this web anime for the sake of completion. The whole thing is up on YouTube, ripe for the viewing, but I keep losing track of which episodes I’ve already seen, and I can never remember what the hell happened. So this is where we put the “log” in “liveblog”.
We’re starting today with the first six episodes, which make up the Prison Planet arc of the show. That may sound like a lot of ground to cover, but these episodes are short, so we’re only talking about 40-45 minutes of footage.
The story begins with Goku and Vegeta training with Whis on Beerus’ planet. Also, the Supreme Kai is here serving tea, and then Future Mai runs over, so she’s here too, apparently. According to Shin, they came to Beerus’ planet so Trunks could train, but this scene make it look like Mai came here alone, which I’m pretty sure is impossible. Maybe Whis or Shin brought her, except she was supposed to be with Trunks, so why is everyone just now finding out he didn’t make it?
To be clear, this is the Blue-haired Trunks and Future Mai from the Zamasu arc. When we last saw them, Whis had arranged for them to take refuge in an alternate timeline where Zamasu hadn’t killed everyone yet. It was also made clear that they would never return from that world, but SDBH just has them dropping in like it’s Sunday brunch. Now, you might be asking “Didn’t you just say Xeno Trunks was a character in Heroes? Why isn’t that version of Trunks in this show?” And to that I say: Don’t worry, he’s in this too, just not as much.
Then this shady-looking dude named Fu shows up and tells everyone that Trunks is trapped on “The Prison Planet”. Vegeta asks how he could possibly know that, and Fu explains that he’s a friend of Trunks and he investigated his disappearance. I like how skeptical Vegeta is of this story. “My son doesn’t have friends, get the fuck outta here.”
So Goku, Vegeta, and Mai travel to the Prison Planet, which is just a bunch of clip art of planets from our solar system clustered together and surrounded by cartoon chains. It looks stupid as hell, like they told the art department “We need a prison planet design, and make it as literal as possible.”
There, the gang meets a second Goku, who can turn Super Saiyan 4. This is not the same Goku from Dragon Ball GT, and official sources refer to him as “Xeno Goku”. He’s an agent of the Time Patrol, and when he encounters the other Goku, they get into a classic superhero misunderstanding and fight. Then Fu shows up and it quickly becomes clear that he’s the one behind all of this. Xeno Goku is on a mission to apprehend Fu, and Fu brags that he uses the Prison Planet to trap powerful warriors for his experiments. Fu tricked Trunks into coming here, then used him as bait to lure Goku and Vegeta. Xeno Goku pretended to get caught in order to infiltrate this place, but that suits Fu’s purposes, since he’s trapped here now.
He tells them to find Trunks themselves, and says something about how they’ll have to gather the Dragon Balls on the Prison Planet. Xeno Goku has one, but the other six are in the hands of the other prisoners. This sounds like a pretty decent gauntlet for the good guys to go through, but this whole idea gets abandoned by Episode 2.
Meanwhile, Trunks wakes up in a cell with a prison uniform and some sort of tracking bracelet on his arm. Then the wall opens up and he runs out into a city. Then Cooler attacks him, seeking the Dragon Balls. This seems like a pretty cool premise, more authentic to the “Prison Planet” title, but this is all dropped immediately.
From his lab, Fu watches everyone and seems extremely pleased with what’s going on, although he never explains why, or what his plan is. Get used to this, because this is pretty much all he ever does.
Meanwhile, he’s got this other guy locked away. His name is Cumber, the Masked Evil Saiyan, and he has a Dragon Ball too. At the end of episode 1, Fu says it’s not quite time for him to get involved yet. In Episode 2, Cumber breaks free and heads straight for the good guys to attack them.
Goku tries to punch Cumber, but Cumber has this weird power where if you touch his ki, it makes you go berserk. That sounds pretty awesome, except it only happens to Goku here, just once, and then it never gets brought up again. I notice I’m saying that a lot here.
Also, berserk Goku’s skin is darker for some reason, which I like better, actually, except this is supposed to signify Cumber’s dark energy corrupting him or something, so that seems kind of problematic.
Fortunately for Vegeta, Trunks and Cooler show up to help. Yeah, Cooler’s on our side for this. Apparently he and Trunks came to some sort of understanding between Episodes 1 and 2. The prison clothes were pointless, since Mai brought along Trunks’ own clothing, so he changes out of them to join the fight.
During his captiviy, Cooler heard from Fu about Golden Frieza, so he decides to try that for himself and succeeds immediately. This is treated like some big game-changing moment, as if fans haven’t been photo-shopping Cooler since 2015. Cooler than goes “I think I shall call this form.................... Golden Cooler!” like there was any possible other name he would have used.
Goku finally comes to his senses, but then Cumber breaks free of his restraints. Trunks goes in to distract him while Goku and Vegeta use Potara earrings which the Supreme Kai gave to Mai before they set off on this trip.
So it’s Vegito Blue vs. Cumber, and things get so rough that Vegito has to do a Kai-o-ken on top of Blue. Here’s a picture of Golden Cooler just standing there like an asshole watching.
Vegito seems to gain the upper hand, but then Cumber reveals he knows the fake moon technique, and he turns into a giant ape. I’m not sure why he’s this orange color, unless this is meant to be like Golden Oozaru tainted with evil ki or whatever. The thing is, they keep calling Cumber an “Evil Saiyan”, but he hasn’t actually done anything that evil. I mean, he choked out Trunks, but there’s plenty of regular Saiyans who would do the same thing if they could. “Evil Saiyan” implies that he’s some kind of next-level evil, like hanging goat entrails over his altar to Moloch or something.
His first ki blast causes Vegito’s fusion to dissolve, but perhaps more importantly, Cumber’s fighting at such an intensity that it’s damaging the giant chains that seal the Prison Planet off from the rest of the universe.
Goku and Vegeta decide their only chance now is to cut off Cumber’s tail, and Trunks flies in to back them up. Mai watches from the sidelines, and she’s got two more Potara earrings. Wait, how many of these things did Shin give her, anyway?
At this point, Fu finally notices the cracks in the seal on the Prison Planet and goes to the battlefield to scold Cumber in person. He takes out his sword and does some sort of technique to dispel the fake moon and reverse Cumber’s Oozaru transformation without cutting his tail.
Fu withdraws, apparently satisfied that he’s brought the fight down to a more acceptable level. This pretty much puts us back where we started, except Goku’s now using Super Saiyan God to fight Cumber, even though we just saw Cumber give Vegito a hard time at Super Saiyan Blue. Cumber seems to recognize the God form somehow, but he never explains his reaction to it, and this never gets brought up again.
Despite Fu’s intervention, the chains break away completely. You’d think this would upset Fu, and he is upset, but not because of this...
No, he’s upset because, while he was away, someone found his lab and wrecked it. Now he can’t monitor the battle, which disrupts his experiment.
Cumber wrecks Goku’s shit, which knocks him out for a while, but fortunately Xeno Goku and Xeno Vegeta show up to defend him. Seems that they were the ones who wrecked Fu’s lab, and I guess that explains where Xeno Vegeta was until this moment. He was scouting out the lab, waiting for an opening.
I don’t know why the other Vegeta isn’t getting involved in this fight. I think he’s okay, but he just stands with Trunks and Mai watching the battle. I mean, Golden Cooler is doing the same thing, but I think we’ve already established that Golden Cooler is just an asshole.
Xeno Vegeta suggests that they fuse, since Cumber’s one tough bastard. He hates fusion, but he’s willing to make an exception. So for those of you keeping score, this is the second fusion in less than six episodes.
So now it’s Super Saiyan 4 Vegito vs. Cumber, who decides to bust out Super Saiyan 3. You can tell because his eyebrows are gone. This seems weird, because base Cumber was giving Vegito Blue a hard time, so the only conclusion I can make here is that SSJ4 is stronger than Blue, or Cumber’s transformations don’t mean much.
Vegito 4 seems to beat Cumber, but then Fu shows up again to confront the jerks who broke his lab.
Then Cumber rejoins the battle, and Fu observes that the seal on the Prison Planet has been broken. And he seems... happy about this? If this was what he wanted all along, why did he cancel Cumber’s Oozaru form? He says that “they will revive soon”, and leaves.
I like how he uses his sword (swords?) to cut an X-shaped portal for himself. That’s a nice touch.
Xeno Goku wants to chase after Fu, but they have to rescue the others from Cumber, who’s fired a giant ki blast at them. Regular Vegeta complains about Regular Goku just lying there passed out, when...
Goku suddenly wakes up and goes Ultra Instinct. While he fights Cumber alone, the rest of them teleport back to Beerus’ planet. Xeno Goku and Xeno Vegeta say their farewells and head off to continue the hunt for Fu, and I guess everyone just assumes that Regular Goku can save himself when he’s ready.
Just as Goku beats Cumber, another portal opens up, and out comes... Zamasu? And he’s got a posse. They grab Cumber and leave.
This leaves Goku alone on the Prison Planet as it explodes. Nice callback to the destruction of Namek, except Goku can use Instant Transmission, so why isn’t he?
Back on Beerus’ planet, the Supreme Kai of Universe 6 suddenly shows up, and he breathlessly informs Vegeta and the rest about an invasion in his home universe. Dammit, now I have to look up his name. Fuwa. The Supreme Kai of U6 is named Fuwa. Glad we settled that.
Vegeta’s like “I’m a bad enough dude to save Universe 6. Let’s rock.”
So yeah, this is a bunch of nonsense. There is a plotline running through all of this, but Toei presented the first six episodes like it’s a single story arc, and it’s more like the first leg of a larger story arc. There’s hints of something more ambitious here. Trunks’ prison uniform and the Dragon Balls suggest that they might have been planning to spend more time in this setting, but instead the whole thing explodes in less time than it takes to get a pizza delivered.
This probably goes without saying, but there’s too many characters in this thing. We have two Gokus and two Vegetas, and both pairs fuse to make two Vegitos. It’s fanservice, I get it, but it’s over before we can really get into it. Golden Cooler literally doesn’t do anything. I mean Mai doesn’t do much either, but that’s because she doesn’t have any powers. I don’t know which one irritates me more.
I like the idea of Cumber, but they never fleshed him out. Fu keeps teasing details about the guy, but we never find out where he found Cumber or how he got him here, or why he wears that mask. At least Cumber is still alive so he can return in future episodes and hopefully give us the scoop, but I’m not optimistic that we’ll get much.

Letters From Watson Liveblog - Aug. 12
The Norwood Builder, Part 3 of 3
It would be easy to write it so Lestrade ignored Holmes because of how sure he is that the case has already been solved, so making Lestrade still listen despite all the evidence is a good showing of his character.
They're gonna smoke out Oldacre!
I have to question the safety of starting an indoor fire, but I guess it's as safe as can be with buckets of water on standby and an open window. Part of having a dramatic flair is also having a present sense of danger, after all.
The story is titled The Norwood Builder and it didn't even occur to me that the architecture would play a role somehow. And not to give Oldacre any credit, but I want to say that I would also include secret rooms and hidden places if I were building my own house, just because it'd be fun.
Perfect is the enemy of good, as they say, in both creative and criminal efforts. Sometimes you have to know just when to stop when framing someone for your own murder.
Oldacre's one of those "It's just a prank, guys" sort of people. Somehow this makes him even more despicable to me, more so than trying to get an innocent man hanged.
I'd be curious to see what a sequel to this story would look like. I wouldn't want Oldacre to do something boring like try to shoot Holmes, so I think you'd have to lean into his architectural skillset. Like maybe he tricks Holmes and Watson into a Saw-style scenario (a saw-nario if you will), or a trapped house of some kind.
I like that Holmes tells Watson to just say the remains were actually rabbits, and instead Watson just writes out that Oldacre decided not to tell them.
Speaking of, how badly were those remains burned that they were indistinguishable from either a rabbit or a human? I assumed they were something like a charred human skeleton, but evidently not.
Always love to see more Mycroft. Hopefully I'll be able to keep on time with this one.

One thing I think is a weakness of the season (unless I just wasn't paying enough attention) is that the reasoning behind everything that happened on Brendok originally is still somewhat unclear.
The main thing is I don't know why Sol believed that Mae and Osha were in danger from the coven.
They can write it where it's A. true. the twins were in danger but Sol caused a bunch of problems by the way he handled it. B. something that he has good reason to believe but that is incorrect. He reasonably believed they were in danger but they were not and while he thought he was protecting them he was actually just making a mess. Or C. unfounded. He jumps to a conclusion on the basis of prejudice, or selfishness, or bad vibes or whatever, and without any reasonable cause, incorrectly assumes they're in danger. Or a variation on any of the three.
Any of those options is fine and this story can use any of those. But. We have to know which it is, and I genuinely don't. It's unclear to me if the show is taking the approach that:
-Sol knows something we don't about what this Vergence thing means and that legitimately suggests that Mae and Osha were at risk from the coven (whether intentional or not). If this is the case, it could just be that they're not done unspooling the mystery yet BUT. If so I think they needed to more clearly indicate that Sol does know something, and just not tell us what yet. And they could do it either through a flashback conversation with Indara, or a comment from Sol in his final confrontation with Mae and Osha.
-Sol doesn't have any concrete knowledge that they were at risk, but there was some kind of energy or force disturbance on Brendok that caused him to sense something was wrong and to react the way he did. This also caused Torbin's reactions of fear and desperately wanting to leave. Again if this is what they're going for, they could still be working on that mystery, but if so they needed to give an extra hint in this direction or another piece of the puzzle before the season ended/Sol died.
-Sol made an assumption because he was prejudiced against the coven. And if that's the case, is that founded or unfounded. Which goes back to a comment I made in one of my liveblogs, that it's unclear what the show means when it calls this group 'witches'--Are they dark side users? Or are they just a religious faction that the Jedi distrust for being different? There is some dialogue from the coven (I think Aniseya specifically) that suggests they see themselves as persecuted for simply having a different view of the force BUT I don't know that that can be taken at face value because it pretty closely mirrors Qimir's lines about himself, and Qimir is pretty clearly a Sith who thinks murder is a fun bonding activity. There's also Osha's strong reaction against being part of the coven which led her to wanting to be a Jedi (which is mostly unexplained). And the fact that to my knowledge the only other use of the term 'witches" in Star Wars movies and tv has been the Night Sisters who are pretty uniformly portrayed as a evil.
So I just wish the season had left us with either a clearer knowledge of what the motivations were in the events on Brendok, or a stronger indication of what is intentionally being kept a mystery still.

Skipping ahead to today's NMTDaily video- the go-to obvious angsty AU for play era is what if Benedick and Claudio had actually had to duel. So in this canon, where there are no swords, I've often wondered if there was anything that could make this Ben actually punch Claudio, which is the closest we'd get. (They couldn't have posted it on the internet, but that's not the point here.) This episode is that answer, that Ben isn't a violent person, just goes cold and angry and kicks Claud and Pedro out of his house just by saying "Leave." Now, if they'd refused to leave and kept bad-mouthing Hero and Bea... everyone has a breaking point. In this AU, he'd lose his temper and hit Claud once, and both Claud and Pedro'd immediately leave in shock. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't considered fic-ing it just to get to write Ben showing up at Bea's all freaked out with a badly bruised hand, and her taking care of him and also freaking out, like "when I said kill him, I didn't mean literally, this could've been so much worse, oh god, I'm so glad you're okay you idiot." It's got hurt/comfort potential for sure, but it always ends up feeling OOC on everyone's parts when I plot it out in my head, so I haven't done it. I think TCW modernized this exactly right.
It's also really interesting that the boys come to Ben's house looking for fun and comfort here, when in the play I'm pretty sure Benedick is the one who storms in on them to issue his challenge to Claudio. It tracks that in this version, dueling isn't a thing anymore and kicking them out of his room better shows Ben repudiating them in a modern sense. I just always think it's chillingly compelling to think about how the kids in this universe were soldiers who fought duels in the original universe and how much I want to protect them from that- even Claudio and Pedro, even though they suck right now.
I'll do a liveblog of this episode when I get to it, but here's some on-time thoughts.
#nmtdaily#nmtd#BROTHERS#additionally this is a decent part of why lolilo was so hard for me#ben was so indisputably the good guy and then- well#anyway thats my boy and i love him you know this by now#(should i fic the whumpy hurt/comfort ben punches claudio AU?)#(if you say yes and i do it you cant get mad if it's ooc)#(the concept is already ooc so)

I’ve been watching my friend liveblog her rewatch of She-Ra and the Princesses of Power (great show) and it looked really fun to do. And she’s also doing this to get into writing SPOP fanfics and as some of you may remember, I have a Jem fanfic called Unbreakable that I really do need to finish. So I figured I would blog my rewatch of Jem. I wanted to watch the show again to get my creative juices flowing and figured why not.
Because I know the show backwards and forwards due to watching it five or six times my posts will probably largely focus on the characters and traits they have that I incorporate into the writing. I’ll talk about Jerrica’s relationship with Rio and why it’s so dysfunctional and concerning.
I’m also going to be a fucking weirdo and keep track of the crying because a character trait of Kimber’s I find really interesting is how private she is with her tears compared to the others. But this will be kept in a folder of its own and I won’t dwell on it.
I won't be putting all of these into the fandom tag because I worry that I'll be deemed "too active" by Tumblr and my posts will stop showing up in the tag. So I guess if you're interested in keeping up with these keep track of the "Kujo Watches Jem" tag.
Man I love this show’s first intro song and the animation. It’s largely rotoscoped and looks really nice.
The show starts off with a look at Jem and The Holograms at a premiere and it’s a cool way of introducing the characters. They make it very clear who’s who.
Aja
Shana
I love how they just fukkin’ throw Kimber out of the car. This is a good time to mention that the animation in the first five episodes is pretty janky. They’re stitched together seven minutes shorts that were part of the Super Sunday block on whichever channel this aired on. So we’re kind of watching a proof of concept right now.
And of course they show Jem as this cool and mysterious woman as she shrugs off her sheer veil in front of a cheering crowd. Reporters ask Jem a bunch of questions.
Then we hear our protagonist, Jerrica, start narrating.
She tells us that her story begins after her father's unexpected death. And they establish later in the show that this funeral is on or around Jerrica's birthday. Which is really awful. I feel bad for her.
I remember Eric being kind of creepy at the funeral but always forget just how creepy he is. Especially because I’m fairly confident that at this point in production Jerrica is meant to be an older teen. Like, 17 or 18. I don’t blame Rio for dragging her off.
But oh man, let’s just add this to the “Jerrica apologizes for Rio count.” It’s a recurring thing.
Now we cut to a shot of Starlight House and the characters working to fix it up. This also has cool details like a design table, Shana is into fashion design as we’ll learn later.
Uh, I need to point out this bird cage. You’ll see why later. But I need to point it out.
I wonder how long Ashley’s been living here for. Because she comments on the house being a dump as if she’s just moved in. Also she broke that chair. She tried to flop onto it but it broke.
Now we meet Mrs. Bailey who helps take care of the kids. Nice lady. She informs Jerrica that her dad, Emmett, would get money to fund the Starlight House’s upkeep from his music company. So Jerrica goes over to the office. She sees a new receptionist, walks past her and enters her dad's old office.
Eric continues to call Jerrica “darling” and talks about how he’s hired a new band called The Misfits. And they ride in on these extremely toyetic motorcycles. I don’t think they ever did get released though. But man, this screams “toy commercial show.” Jem is way more than just that though.
We get the first song of the series and it’s great. Fun imagery. And it’s funny seeing them play their instruments because Stormer is playing this weird boomerang guitar. I seriously do wonder when they finalized what instruments the characters play. Aja was messing around with drumsticks earlier in the episode and spoiler alert, she’s not a drummer, like, at all.
Jerrica calls The Misfits trash and insults Pizzazz. Then they talk about Eric holding a rigged battle of the bands competition. Which obviously Jerrica doesn’t approve of.
We then cut to Jerrica in her bedroom on a stormy night. Jerrica’s mad about Eric ruining the good image of her dad’s company. Then Kimber points out the jewellery box addressed to Jerrica. It contains earrings, very familiar earrings. Everybody wonders who they came from. Aja figures it was Rio.
Then thunder and lighting, and a mysterious woman who looks like she walked out of an exercise tape addresses Jerrica in a slightly ghostly voice.
And then Jerrica very rudely puts her hands in this woman’s belly. Jerrica! Personal space!
Understandably the mysterious woman leaves. In a flash of light.
Everybody follows the directions left in the earring box and meet up with the woman in Starlight Drive-In. She walks through a wall and they follow her in their van, the Starlight Express.
A quick aside, I was talking to my friend who’s only seen two or three episodes of Jem because of me kind of going, “Well, these episodes are very silly. I think it’d be fun to watch them with you.” Anyway, I was talking about the show and because of the fact that everything has the word Starlight in the name he asked if Starlight was Jerrica’s last name. And yeah, I get why he would think that.
Anyway, the woman introduces herself as Synergy and explains that she’s a highly advanced entertainment system made by Emmett Benton. We get shots where the characters split off and look at their interests, Shana at clothes, Kimber at the musical instruments, and Aja at the car, the Rockin' Roadster.
Seeing Synergy’s ability to make realistic holograms along with all the instruments gave Jerrica an idea.
Oh neat, we’re seeing a performance by a band that sounds… not great. I guess the rigging is going well.
And then we hear some more music, this time a song building up.
And that song the first one performed by Jem in the series. It’s a very solid one! A good note to start the band on.
Obviously everybody loved this band, they sound great! Eric gets all worked up and demands to know what they’re doing here because the contest is invite only. Jem points to Jerrica and announces that she was sent there by Jerrica.
And then Jem totally inconspicuously runs off of the stage and behind a tree. Then turns into Jerrica. She meets up with Eric on the stage and they’re caught arguing on the mics. I actually forgot that Eric was the one who put control of Starlight Music up as a stake in a new competition. One just between The Misfits and Jem and The Holograms.
A film producer named Howard Sands happened to be in the crowd and he promises a movie, and a mansion to the winner of the new battle of the bands competition. Six months from now.
Jerrica accepts the challenge having full confidence in herself and her sisters.
The Misfits are rowdy trouble makers so they steal Jem’s equipment and drives off with it in their van. The rival band gives chase because that’s their stuff and they need it. Musical equipment is not cheap. We get this thrilling chase where Roxy and Stormer throws things at the car Aja’s driving to try to get them to crash I guess. And uh
That’s a cliff. They’re heading right off a cliff. And Aja hit the gas judging by the sound effect.
Good work.
You can kind of tell this was the end of the short, especially when they come back from commercial and replay the chase scene.
Jerrica’s not dumb. She sends a hologram of Jem out to get help. The hologram meets up with Rio and tells him where the car is. Rio saves them.
The paper reports on this and gives Jem and The Holograms a bunch of publicity.
The Misfits don’t see much of a problem with this because they can still win the competition and of course
winning is everything.
I just, look at this GIF.
Okay I needed you to see that. The music video is a wonderful flavour of silly.
Now back to Starlight House. We see the girls putting money into the Honor Jar. It's a communal fund that the girls contribute to in order to afford things for Starlight House. They’re trying to buy a new fridge. Before adding the funds to the jar they have to announce how they made the money.
Ashley questions the jar which really adds to the feeling that she’s new here.
Also, it’s weird hearing Deirdre being voiced by Samantha Newark. She’s voiced by Patricia Alice Albrecht in her later appearances. The same VA as Pizzazz, Samantha Newark is Jerrica’s by the way.
Meanwhile Eric phones a thug and tells him to make Jerrica uncomfortable.
I need to know where this place is located. It’s in the middle of a forest or something. And I swear that’s a river behind it. Is that safe when you have twelve kids? The youngest is eight so maybe we don't have too much to worry about.
Anyway, Ashley steals money from the Honor Jar and Jerrica catches her. And then says something that never sat super right with me.
“There’s no room in Starlight House for girls who steal and lie.”
Like, hm, I dunno, I can’t articulate exactly why it bothers me. I feel like it would kind of breed dishonesty. Like how controlling parents often end up with kids who are really good at sneaking around them.
But Jerrica is a teen herself and taking care of twelve kids so I can’t be too hard on her. Especially because her dad did recently die so there is going to be some adjusting to the new role as foster mother.
Jerrica tells Ashley that the other girls are going to decide on her punishment because they’re the ones running the Honor Jar. The punishment is to raise $30 which is ten times the amount Ba Nee raised by the way.
I get a kick out of Samantha Newark trying to sound like a tough girl, possibly from Jersey. What do I know? I’m Canadian. Now I’m kind of wishing they kept her as Deirdre’s voice actor. We do get more "tough girl Newark" later in the series though. In an excellent episode.
Later on during the night Rio’s explaining that the power’s still out and offers to stay over. But Jerrica turns him down. They lean in for a kiss.
And hear a bunch of giggling which is cute.
Jerrica turns to them and says, “Jealous?” before kissing Rio.
I like this dynamic between Jerrica and her girls.
Later that night the thug Eric talked to, Zipper, awkwardly breaks into the house. It takes him a couple tries to break the window. Still better than what I could do.
One of the Starlight Girls, Marianne, never named in the show, alerts Jerrica to there being a noise coming from downstairs. So Jerrica takes her sisters with her to check out the noise while the kids stay upstairs and safe.
Because there’s no power and it’s the middle of the night Kimber’s holding a lantern with the biggest damn flame I have ever seen.
Zipper having been caught pushes past Kimber and knocks the lantern out of her hands. And sets the house on fire.
Like, crazily on fire.
And this is where the episode ends.
I would love to do more but this took even longer than I expected and I haven’t been getting enough sleep so I’m quite tired and dizzy. So bedtime for me. I’ll pick this up later, possibly tomorrow.
#Jem and the Holograms#Kujo Watches Jem#Well that took almost three hours#Next episode will have less screenshots. I mostly wanted ones that show the characters when they get introduced#The screenshotting took the most time#I can't wait for the Honor Jar to stop being a thing.
