Fruits Basket, SE03, Ep3
This ep is exactly like se02, ep 24, meaning it was divided clearly into two parts. While the graduation theme unties the two parts, you can point things out exactly like ep,24:
1st part : Machiâs story= the important part.
2nd part: scattered parts here & there that concern yuki, ep, 24 his interactions with akito, here his interactions with Motoko).
plus, an ep cliff hanger: (e, 24 the dvd given to kureno, here, Isuzuâs mysterious fate).
it is exactly the same even a small kyo/tohru moment!. School graduation instead of the zodiacâs new year gathering.Â
Really awkward pacing, but thatâs furuba, we celebrate when they DO connect dots for once! lets talk abt the REAL ep: MACHI.
-Machiâs awkward presence: Â
Although I love Machi, Iâve voiced my concerns abt her character in Furuba:
It seemed that Machi was solely created to be a step in yukiâs success journey more than a character on her own right. After getting motherly love (tohru) leaving the nest, Yuki needed friendship (kakeru), then as an independent man, he needs romantic love: (Machi). This is all fine initially but I was yearning for more individuality for Machi as a character. All furuba characters were given space to be unique including minor characters like Motoko who narrated her own story each time sheâs on screen & we lived it with her within two seasons & a number of eps.
However, Machiâs background was introduced thro her brotherâs exposition in se02 & that moment was a yuki/ kakeru bonding moment.
Thro kakeruâs exposition we learned how similar yuki & machi are (the parental neglect, high expectations, cold sibling relationship, Big brother saves himself by himself, big brother pushing for redemption & the younger siblingâs still trapped silently ). While that makes for romantic appeal between the two which makes the writerâs job easier, it steals from Machi individuality.
Then her part in ep, 24 was shown & I was given hope for Machiâs individuality as her own inner voice spoke volumes abt her as a person away from yuki (romantic interest) or Kakeru (big brother). Having a lot of screen time, while can make a character more believable to the audience, is never a factor in characterâs depth nor individual worth. Heck! kyo (part of the main trio & the main characterâs love interest) has only ONE ep in se02 to explore his issues & by far it is my fave ep in se02 as it established kyoâs trauma, psyche, mental issues & emotional baggage better than I could ever imagine! You can DO WONDERS with little time if you knew what to do. Thatâs what happened with Machi this ep (half ep).
-Machiâs shines! (trauma & romance):
I was so relieved to learn that altho both Machi & yuki despised perfection as it suffocated them, the writer (thankfully) went abt a different approach with Machi. Unlike Yuki who went silent cuz he felt his voice didnât matter as he was used as a tool, Machi went silent cuz she was was NOT needed, & not only discarded but painted as WRONG. If you admit that raising me this way is wrong, then what does this make me? What should I do with myself? Iâm wrong! boring, a failure, & a presumed killer!! all while I was absolutely doing my best! all while I was having good intentions! It is devastating but It makes Machi real. A character on her own right with her own trauma, struggle, pain & outlook on life. Although, the writer made the whole yuki/Machi meeting orchestrated by Kakeru to quickly make the two siblings one step closer, it worked cuz kakeru chose to not interfere after setting the scene. He played a subtle mach maker & tried to find happiness for his sister silently. Kakeruy is yukiâs best buddy & Machi becoming the girlfriend, the trio will have to hang out more which will slowly but surely warm Machi towards Kakeru. While the flat visit is the part where Machi open the lid to Yuki with a spark of romance at the end, the chalk scene is the romantic part! Not only did Yuki noticed her panic & saved her by breaking a piece of chalk, she secretly remembered his promise! â lets make footprints on the snowâ. The snow that was another source of anxiety attack, is now sth she looks forward to & prays for! Truly romantic!!! Well-done writer.
Side Notes:
I know furuba is shoujo & itâs abt love, but Câmon! where did Nao/ Motoko come from??!! XDD Who is left without love interest? Kyoâs rejected fangirl loved by one of kyoâs buddies? The maids in love with Akito? Momiji? Who does Kimi love besides money? XD
Yuki once observed that kyo makes tohru happy with small things, Today he did the same! A broken piece of chalk.
Yuki/ Machi romantic scenes contrast Yuki/ tohru forced romantic scene at the earlier seasons. There is no lame cringy lines like â Iâll kidnap you & go to a vacationâ or kissing a ribbon. There is NO acting or pretentious lines. Here a piece of chalk did the trick, an understanding of her tears & a head pat, a promise to walk on snow together! Congratulations Yuki, You made it into romantic boyfriends category! XD. also, good writing!
The Bra scene is the real comedy in the ep.
Arisaâs â kyon, we wonât forgive you if you hurt tohruâ is gold cuz kyo WILL. When itâs time to confess he knew kyoko & she HATES him & doesnât forgive him, tohru would be hurt! Even if she wasnât in love with kyo!!! Knowing your belovedâs last words were hateful is painful!! Add to this that tohru loves kyo & would be struggling between forgiving him or not!! Add to this that kyo might NOT want to be forgiven!!
â I wonât forgive youâ. kyoâs haunting reminder that heâs unforgivable is now shared by kyoko, yuki, Hana & Arisa!!Â
look, you might argue that furubaâs romantic writing might be a bit awkward with all sorts of romantic couples, age gaps, the need for everybody to be in love one way or the other & so on, but the traumatic behavioral writing is the best!!!!! I was never disappointed with how Takaya write abused traumatized childrenâs behavior. One of my fave scenes is yuki/ kyo in the stairs in se02 where kyo lashed out on yuki & yuki was over it. While that scene was rightfully celebrated for yukiâs triumphant attitude as he got over his trauma, I love it for the realistic trauma filled attitude of kyo, all charged with kyokoâs flashback! Heâs in deep & heâs all by himself! Kyo will hurt tohru cuz he loves her just like how kazuma hurt him by forcefully taking his bracelet cuz he loves him. Kyo will be thinking it is for the best, who would want to be with someone that kyoko of all ppl hates!
Iâll tolerate all the weird love couples in furuba, but the moment trauma is written weakly Iâll drop the show. There is NO way, kyo will confess kyokoâs lines then go âsorry abt that tohru, weâre good?âÂ
Back to Machi, I really hope that her trauma isnât merely wrapped up cuz yuki loved her. Furuba was never abt love heals, it is abt love helps. We might not see more of her trauma for reasons of space, or not related to the current plot lines, but I really hope we hear her talk abt herself with yuki even few lines. Although, I feel that the focus now will be on setting her for yukiâs next stage in character development: honesty in the love confession. Heâll tell her abt the curse as the trailer hinted at. Thatâs their first love life struggle. But if I were to take a guess, it will be dealt with quickly like her trauma. She loves yuki dearly & as long as he walks with her in snow (human or rat, lol), itâs all good. <3
Hiorâs mom is love.
Kaguraâs new style is love! she isnât dressed overly cutely anymore, but had a more comfortably style & I love her hair! also her friendship with Isuzu! <3. I wish Isuzu would really know there are ppl worried abt her in her life. Haru isnât the only one.
Akito put Isuzu in the cat room, didnât she? The place she left is similar to the place young Kazum wandered to in se01, ep25. & those scissors....
I never thought that the mere sight of shigureâs face will disgust me. XD. I still find him so intriguing, but yeah need time to get over the fact that he slept with Ren & counted it even with Akito, then slept with Akito afterwards! EWWW! so disgusting & Iâm here to see this drama escalate!
Yuki / Machi moment was interrupted! XD Itâs not fun when it happened to you, yuki? XD.

stumbling across a billions mystery in a roundabout way and then also solving it in a roundabout way: an adventure
undertaken with @nothingunrealistic, whose posts i also use as sources / link to as references throughout here
so itâs at least been mentioned in tags before, but weâve been wondering about this promo picture from 5x09
wherein rian is clearly in taylorâs office while someone else is at her desk, across from winston, who is partly visible, and weâve been wondering if rian was going to move desks in 5x09 or 5x08, but 5x08 has aired and she was sitting at that usual desk adjacent to winstonâs, at the row furthest from the entrance to the tmc niche, but on the side closer to taylorâs office, rather than closer to the office lauren (and previously sara) uses.
today i was looking at these first two promo pics ft. rian from 5x11 and i noticed that she seems to be sitting on a desk that is furthest from the entrance but closer to taylorâs office, and at first i was like oh hey, this means sheâs still at her usual desk in 5x11, and still sits next to winston! but then i was looking closer at some details and quickly got confused about what part of her desk rian was sitting on, and where it was positioned relative to taylorâs office, and to the other desks in that space. you can see that rian is sitting on one corner of her desk, and that corner is adjacent to the corner which is actually a concave indentation for the chair / sitting area, as all the desks are L shaped with the chair in that inner angle. you can also see in the second picture in which she is talking to taylor that the side of the desk is visible, where it shouldâve had another desk pushed up against it.Â
at this point i was telling soph @nothingunrealisticâ about the fact iâd seemingly confirmed rian was still at her usual desk next to winstonâs but that i was confused about the tmc office layout, which is not in and of itself new or unusual lol, so we were consulting other shots & images of the desks and their position relative to each other and the two side offices. i made this handy diagram using a picture of rianâs desk from 5x07
she would have to be sitting on either of the spots the arrows are pointing to, and when you look at where her chair is in the shots from 5x11, she has to be sitting on the edge of the desk the arrow on the right is pointing to, but there should be a desk flush against that, preventing us from seeing the side of rianâs desk thatâs exposed in the 5x11 pics. so, at this point, we could sort of forget about trying to reconcile precise angles in various shots, because it was pretty evident that rianâs desk has to be in a new position for the 5x11 shots to be possible, and we were wondering if her desk had been moved apart from the others. i mentioned that it could be a Social Distancing thing, which would then surely be applied to all desks, not just rianâs, but that i thought the desks were in a regular arrangement in 5x10, which is when rianâs hair seems suddenly & significantly longer and the episode summary mentions that axe cap returns to the office, so weâd theorized that if there was going to be a pandemic timeskip, it would happen between 5x09 and 5x10. soph then mentioned that the desks at axe cap in the 5x11 promo pics may in fact be spaced out more than usual, which sure supported that now all desks were positioned apart from each other, and they had also brought up this shot of taylor in 5x10 with the tmc desks behind them, which i did some Close Observational Analysis on.
thereâs no way that with the usual desk grouping weâve seen throughout season 5, where thereâs a 4x2 rectangular group of desks, there should be desk edges that are not in line like that, or there should be any visible gap between desks, so this did seem like solid enough confirmation desks had been moved and spaced out. and while zooming in on the picture, i also noticed that there seems to be someone sitting at the desk to our right, i.e. the one attached to the Lime Green underline there. that desk ought to be rianâs, if you compare it to what we see in 5x11 and to the fact that the original placement of her desk would be closest to where that desk in question is now apparently located. even though we canât really see much, it looks like the person is wearing a dark / black shirt and an open greyish layer, which matches what we see rian wearing in this shot of her from the other tmc 5x10 promo pics.
that picture of rian seems to be taken in the same scene as those daytime shots taylor and lauren, wherein they are wearing the same outfits as they are in the later nighttime shots, so rian would presumably also be wearing the same outfit; this could be her at that desk with her hair behind her shoulders. and in the course of having that picture of rian zoomed in, i then accidentally realized something further about the picture, which is that: prior we had speculated that, since the desk/table rian was leaning at didnât look like any spot in the usual larger desk cluster, she might be in taylorâs office in that pic. but with the new knowledge that desks were in different locations / arranged differently, and simply taking a closer look, i realized that rian, like winston and lauren in those other promo shots, is actually again perched on her own desk.
doesnât quite make sense with taylorâs office layout anymore but Does make sense with the picture forming here. her desk is moved closer to the window, with no desks immediately adjacent to it. the corner of the desk scene in the lower right corner of the shot, which would be the desk seen most directly behind taylor via those shots of them talking to lauren that night, is almost surely winstonâs desk, again approximately closest to its original position.
these shots of winston and lauren are likely from the same scene as those daytime shots of rian and taylor; taylor may be addressing them, while these three are simultaneously Listening. there seems to be another desk a ways across from winstonâs, which canât be rianâs, so thereâs at least one other desk that isnât theirs in that general space. lauren might be standing on the other side of winstonâs chair. comparing this shot of winstonâs desk, and the apparent shot of it in 5x10 behind taylor, it seems like the way rian and winstonâs desks are angled, being kind of on the same diagonal, means that when theyâre sitting down, theyâre facing each other.Â
then, last but not least, soph watched the s5 part 2 trailer again and caught this shot of axe cap behind wendy that couldâve given us this âwow, desks are spaced apartâ clue a lot earlier, but oh well lol.Â
this is definitely the lower floor of axe cap, what with the front desk and the staircase in the background, and in addition to [people wearing masks in the background] thereâs also those Distancing floor markers, what seem to be bottles of hand sanitizer on both those workstation desks there, and, of course, thereâs confirmation the desks at axe cap are spaced out. so, a mystery that couldâve been solved before it began by looking really closely at that brief shot of wendy walking through the office, but instead was discovered through looking at pics of rian while having noted and been bothered by the fact someone else sits at rians desk in one 5x09 promo picture, because Do Not Separate Them (Winston And Rian) and, it seems like while they have been separated, only because everyoneâs desks have been, and while they arenât directly adjacent, theyâre now facing each other, vs you know, being more at a right angle to each other originally. and once that mystery was discovered, we solved it with the power of friendship and teamwork and a tendency to get into this kind of stuff and determinedly figure it out via a bunch of references already collected. it was fun!
Bonus Mystery Via Promo Images:
in that 5x11 collection, there is also a picture of taylor sitting down in some office: we arenât certain what office it is, or who theyâre talking to. but theyâre wearing shoes weâve never seen before, with soles both noticeable higher than usual, and white, so we donât miss it.
weâve definitely never seen taylor with these shoes, and you gotta wonder what the fashion change is for...are the soles more supportive / comfortable? and re: the possibility they could be for comfort, i also noticed that taylor not only chose to put their ankle against their knee to make the shoes visible front and center, but also that they were even capable of doing so. asia, taylorâs actor, said in an interview that the clothes in taylorâs costumes can be physically constraining and inhibit their range of motion:
"Slipping into Taylorâs wardrobe, shoes, pants, belt, the tie thatâs, you know, all the way up, the shirt thatâs buttoned all the way up, it limits oneâs movement, actually, in a way [...] I mean, Taylor, for instance, canât cross their legs comfortably in the pants that theyâre wearing. And that will inform the way that Taylor is sitting in a chair, or the way that Taylor is standing."
(helpfully transcribed by soph, of course) so presumably their usual habit of crossing their ankles is due to the fact they often canât cross their legs comfortably, just as asia stated, but here theyâre doing exactly that, and not only is it even possible for them to manage it, but they do not act like theyâre uncomfortable or this is a challenge. so now iâm wondering if taylorâs chosen to wear both shoes and pants that are both unusually Comfortable for them, and sure further wondering if thereâs a reason for this, especially after all that desk layout analysis sure confirmed that the pandemic has affected some norms on the show. interesting!!! we are out here noticing things, hence, this whole post. hope you enjoyed this journey, but thatâs okay if not because we at least did!
#winston billions#billions#think the fact there's Links in this post means it won't show up in general tags like that but hey. i think it's a good one to throw out lol#riawin#in fact hope i didn't mess up very many of these links or drop the wrong episode number lol. tried to be coherent

For A Greater Good Fun Facts and Self Assesment (spoilers)
Long Post
What worked and what didnât:
I think the overall structure worked pretty well. The most difficult part was, with the plot and subplot already created, scattering all those ideas throughout the text in such a way that at least made some sense. I regret not writing more about Mer Yankelevich, I feel like the crumbs I left on the way were not enough; in my attempt to make it subtle it lacked information about her. The key piece was of course her sister, and I should have introduced her sooner.
MCâs evolution. I feel like Kateâs learnt a lot with this experience (Iâm not only referring to the Deathly Hallows or Grindelwald) When it started, she was very discreet and kept a low profile, not knowing what to do really, not taking more risks than necessary. And then she ended poisoned and splinching just to protect a document she thought was important. I hope her evolution is noticeable for the reader.
Worldbuilding. Grabbing HP concepts that were forgotten and full of potential, plus a dash of original ideas from me and blending them with muggle features was my absolute favourite part of the process.
On that note, I dont own these concepts: Durmstrang, Igor Karkarov, Nerida Vulchanova, umbrella flowers, fanged geraniums, billywigs, Appare Vestigium, glow-worms, trick wand, chamaleon ghouls,Â
If youâve read the fic and thought: âeverything happened so fastâ or got a general odd feeling about the timeline it's because I made a series of monumental mistakes: setting a chapter limit, telling you about it and then tried to stick to it. At first the idea sounded nice: this is my first âbigâ story with complicated components. I should (and I did) do an outline of what I want to happen in each chapter and stick to it methodically so I don't forget what's happening or lose track of the plot. Well...it kind of backfired. So I wrote the first 3 chapters and at that point I thought âokay everything is going as planned, Iâm going to put it out thereâ, bam, instantly cursed. After that it got ridiculously difficult to make the story that I wanted. Why? I needed chapter space that I convinced myself I couldnât add. Dumb.
The major consequence of this was the lack of character backgrounds. It started out good, but as I kept writing and publishing I realised that I missed some great opportunities to make amazing ocs. Thatâs Corentinâs fault in a way: he wasn't going to be a major character, really, just a piece to help Kate a bit. But we all fell in love with him so what was I supposed to do? Also, Sheyi Mawut owns my heart and he got just a bit of spotlight. A shame.
I wish I had written more about them, but I think I wasnât ready just yet to make it even more complicated.I just wanted to prove I could concoct a mystery plot and now that I know I can manage a fair amount of information I think I can take it a step further and deepen new ocs a little bit more.
Iâm thinking about the datura series and I know why I got blocked and tired of writing it; it wasnt going anywhere because I wasnt prepared, and I didnât do the months of outlines and planning that I did with this one. Iâll come back to the datura story one day, subjecting it to a sever rewrite. The ideas are there, I just need to be organised.
Although the chapter limit was problematic it was also a good exercise of managing space and deciding which things were unnecessary for the story. I dont think thereâs any filler chapters, perhaps the last ones, but there is important information there too so... However this sentence from the blog wordsandstuff reassured me (and I think I did a good job at that?)
If you set out to write 10 parts and you write a fantastic story in 8, you havenât failed and itâs not too rushed. Concise writing is an underrated talent. Focus on how effectively you engage the reader, not for how long.
I spent more than year writing this! When I started, I had a lot of ideas, I wrote the last two chapters then the first 3 and I really thought it was going to be that way with the rest of the story... okay... lesson learnt. #humbled
Other thoughts:
I received a couple of comments on ao3 that said that they were pleasantly surprised. Maybe I should change the tags because they are misleading? Clearly this wasnt what people were looking for lol.
One particular comment stood out to me and quoting it said: âYou did not choose the easy way with a fiction with so few characters from the fandom.â And Iâve been thinking about this since I read it. It didnât occur to me that there were few mystery fics (maybe I should write more things like that? Maybe throwing some power couple detective work đ ) In any case, Iâm glad I contributed with something different to the fandom, and the fact that the Charlie bits are very scarce but people who read it still liked it is really flattering.
I wanted to make sure that all the characters had strengths and flaws, I didnt want to severus-snape them so maybe I overdid it with that bit of introspection kate does at the end...
Also, I did the kiss and fade thing twice to mention sex. I know some people dont like that but since it wasnt the point of the story and I havent done research on how to write sex scenes I didnt include them. I have that on my âto learnâ list.
Conclusions:
Writing the whole thing was incredible. It's my first âbigâ project and its not a great work (there are some things I wish I did better, thats what you get when you are an agatha christie wannabe) and not writing more character backgrounds will haunt me to this day, but I think it's at least good for a first series and Iâm proud of it. I loved spending hours doing research and trying to piece together this puzzle. And of course Iâm not an expert and I dont want to sound pretentious (like this is my first story) but if you are planning to write this type of genre I can be another source of tips and tricks for you.
If I read the story after a while and I dont cringe, I would call that a success.
FUN? FACTS!
Bakunawa really belongs to Filippines mythology
Snapdragons have different meanings, one of them being: âgrace under pressure or inner strength in trying circumstancesâ
The entrance to Grindelwaldâs room was going to be in the duelling classroom, strangely shaped as a triangle. I had this system where one of the round candle lamps descended and lined up with a line on the floor (serving as separation for duels) it created the Deathly Hallows symbol. I couldnât make that work because it wouldn't make any sense for Nerida Vulchanova to shape a room like that. Here are some sketches:
Lucius Malfoy was going to appear as the Ministry employee that goes to Durmstrang, but after revising the events of the OoP I realised it was impossible.
Kent Jorgensen was going to be around Kateâs age and the charms teacher and he would have a small crush on her. After seeing some pics of Pen Medina, I rewrote the character completely.
The series was going to be 6 chapters long (Iâm glad I decided not to) one for each month. The chapter names were ridiculous: January of Beginnings, February of reputation, March of Students, April of Discoveries, May I? and June of Endings. #tragic
The Dolohov family was going to be a part of the plot but I had to erase that part because it was unlocking another layer of complexity that I just couldnt handle.
I dont remember exactly the chapter but I got really confused with the names Rhode and Hodges and thereâs one chapter where I accidentally mixed them (I corrected it I think), but for a while I could stop calling Rhode, Hodges, and vice versa lmao
Here are some sketches that helped me describe and imagine things
Thank you for accompany me in this journey, especially if you endured the process with me lmao. Youâve been here for over A YEAR! <3 Mindblowing
Also Iâd love to know your opinions about the way you read the story, I mean, I know some people read it as I published, and some other readers found the story already finished, what are the differences? Should I stop the updating system and drop a story all at once? I know it is difficult to keep up with a complex story if thereâs a lot of weekly or monthly gaps between the chapters, so I wanted to know.
Sending you a virtual hug đđ

first: WAHHHHHHHHH đđđ I got so emotional!!! so emotional!!!! so much that I canât even do this first second pattern bc I have SO MANY thoughts!!!!!!! Iâm writing this in my notes instead of straight into the askbox so u know itâs serious businessâą
ok so debut night!!! I was like ahah yeah itâs a tragedy whatever itâll be fun to start out with and then the voice acting was SO good that it knocked me out of the park and I almost cried haha. itâs crazy how good the voice acting in a3 is like I love how the dialogue and voice acting works well together bc like itâs limited but so effective!! u can so very clearly see and understand the style theyâre going for. especially like tsumugiâs death scene... the Talent jumped out it really did... uh and ok so. I think I may be a littleeee confused abt the play bc I had always interpreted tasukus last lines as raphael to be like abt his being secretly in love with michael. but now that Iâm actually reading the line thatâs like oh donât fall for a human it only ends in misery I know that all too well or whatever... ig the implication is that raphael was in love with another human / the same lady michael was in love with in the play. side note I had to go back and edit the proper names in instead of tasuku and tsumugi lol... but speaking of!! speaking of the voice acting and the play itself I 1) love how blatantly obvious it is when tsumugi goes for that grander, tasuku like style of delivery!! like u could just so easily feel the difference it was wild... and 2) tsuzuru is once again spot on with his writing, lol... I felt that like raphaels inability to save or help michael really parallels how tasuku feels abt tsumugi so well, and itâs wonderful that they r able to resolve things and tasuku can properly compliment him on his acting where the angels fail to do so. itâs very good. and I think the play rly highlights (for me at least) that like. to tasuku, it was tsumugi who was sort of an unreachable existence. like were he to idolize and respect someoneâs acting, it would be tsumugi. and I think that like caring carries over into their roles really well, because I think in michaelâs love for a human tasuku sees like... tsumugiâs style of acting. the heart that heâd lost while within the god troupe. mb Iâm losing my mind a little but ah. the play rly works with their relationship so well!! im very excited to see the other winter ppl get main roles thoâsame for all the troupes!!! now this ask is too long so Iâll have to do another part lol
going to start off this second part of the ask abt hisoka bc oh my GOD. hisoka. like I was just thinking âhm where r the winter troupe cgs anywaysâ and then BAM. hisoka CRYING???? especially since he doesnât seem that emotional it was a really hard hit!!! and who tf is august.... ok well actually theory time!! skipping ahead to the end theres that note that like mentions December and April and. not to expose my friend but very many years ago (a couple years before a3 was launched, at the very least) she wrote this story where there were like 12 orphan assassins and they were all named after months. I remember the main dude was named dec lol. coupled with my âhisoka is capable of murderâ bit? listen.... Iâm not saying anything but Iâm also not not saying anything if u feel me. also I feel like assassin / thief with mysterious background is a common trope!! that was silver from the pokĂ©mon adventures manga too... why is this my reference point lmao. anyways Iâm unclear if assassins would make it into a3 but like.... if the yakuza and supernatural stuff makes it in...
okay moving away from conspiracy theories and into emotions!!! the quotes from like EVERY mankai actor before the final production made me SO emo... and yay!!! they won!!!! (though admittedly I almost had a heart attack when no one clapped) but they won!!!! that ending cg!!!! and I adore how sakyo immediately goes after god troupe man (I know his name is reni I just donât feel like calling him that) for the money lol itâs just so sakyo-like. also I love the lil mixed troupe interactions!! I found the game night ch so fun.... ahh, now I wanna reread that ch since it was so good lol
all in all I was super satisfied ahh!! I am SO excited to start up spring troupe again (HELLO character development!!! and chikage) and Iâm even MORE excited to get thru all the act 1 events!!!! as a final note, is there any way to reread or replay the flair conversations? I didnât want any spoilers for the plays while I was doing the practices for them so I kinda sped thru the first time ahah...
HELLO FRIEND IM SO HAPPY TO GET SUCH A LENGHTY ASK ABOUT WINTER IM LKDJFLKDJFLKFD Winter makes me feel shrimps emotions (i know the whole âshrimps can see more colors than humans canât comprehendâ thing has been disproved but iâm not letting go of that expression, i REALLY feel emotions humans canât comprehend anymore and iâm going to make it everyone elseâs problem)
1) First about the voice acting, rIGHT this is just so fascinating to me!!! I remember after act 2 i came back to reread the main act 1 chapter and i was so thrown out by how GOOD the voice acting was, especially for the first few troupes having to convince you theyâre not comfortable or good at acting yet. Winter whole thing is that theyâre more subtle and mature and you really feel that with their voice acting, Tsumugiâs voice especially knock it off the park anytime heâs on screen.Â
2) Second: what does it say about me that iâve never, ever considered your reading a possibility because i was so set on âoh Raphael youâre in love with Michael sooooo bad you see it as a tragedy already because you can see him throw his life awayâ i didnât even consider âmaybe Raphael went through that tooâ. Though i guess if weâre going with that reading i can totally see âThe Womanâ they let themselves consumed by easily be a representation of acting or even more the God Troupe, with Raphael/Tasuku knowing to step away before it consumes him completely while Michael/Tsumugi, by his love and passion, pushed himself until he broke, which fits and it hurtsssss god Winter plays hits so hard.
3) Third: oh god yeah when Tsumugi goes for Tasukuâs acting itâs just. It makes me SO uncomfortable, iâve experienced this scene like three times by now and the third time i was just âcan i skip it i canât go through this again i canât Tsumugi i love you i canât do thisâ. It doesnât match the play at all and it just throws everyone off balance, and Tsumu you could have told theM YOU WANTED TO DO THAT.... god
4) Fourth: I LOVE YOUR READING SO MUCH I LOVE IT I LOVE IT YES YOUâRE RIGHT!!! Just as we follow Tsumugi let his passion consumes him until he breaks, Tasukuâs character arc really jumps out in Raphael, like, everything you say!!! The way Tasuku/Raphael knew how the feelings Tsumugi/Michael felt would hurt him on the long run but he didnât know what to do about it until it was too late, the regrets and the way Raphael voices his frustrations.... Tasuku struggles to be honest without acting (Tasuku pls i love you) but having such a role really help him expressing all he feels about Tsumugi and iâm HHHH this is so good so so good!!! but yeah i also love that Tasuku finally manages to actually compliment Tsumugi naturally, that he understands he canât let him destroys himself again and itâs just gnhhhhh Tasuku is so kind and considerate and i care about him so much....!!!
5) Fifth:Â âiâm losing my mind a littleâ winter mood, winter mood winter mood- (though every troupeâs mood tbh but Winter is gnhhhhh kdhd hdhjf??? you feel me) (i am BIASED i canât help it TwT) but yeaH iâm looking forward to see how you react to the others plays because the roller coaster juST BEGUN!!!
Onto part 2... Winter Troupe Chapter Feels... 2!
6) Sixth: DLFJDFKLDF HISOKAAAAAAAAAA I LOVE HIM SO MUCHHHHH. Hisoka crying fucked me up so bad!! so so bad!! Like on my first read i didnât know what to think of him as he starts out very apathic to his troupe and then the more it goes on the more you can feel he starts to open up and iâm soft for this sort of slow burn, but then this whole scene happened and it HIT ME IN THE FACE, he was crying, i was crying, we were all crying, the Unopening Door opened a flood of emotions i canât cope with. He sounds SO VULNERABLE during that scene and i know all of the Winter Troupe united on âtaking care of himâ but thatâs really the moment i went âi care you and i will keep taking care of youâ and look at me now. Thanks funky little scene for ruining my life. Iâm glad you liked it iâm aldhjflkjdfkd Hisokaaaaa.....
7) Seventh: I am not commenting on the theory but đ thatâs so highly specific your friend has a galaxy brain i love it. and i love the idea of âwell we have yakuza and supernatural entity whatâs an assassin adding himself to itâ dLKFJDLKF i know everyone in Mankai calls Izumi out everytime someone joins but thatâd be peak. Iâm not going further about what December and August and April are all about but i love this plotline sO much, the few mentions of August when Hisoka regained his memories for a minute still haunts me, the guilt he seems to feel and this pain iâm just... godddd such a good set up. I love this plotline.
8) Eigth: EMOTIONS!! Oh GOD YEAH THE ENDING WITH ALL THE OTHER ACTORS... I cried so hard itâs just. It really shows you itâs not just the culmination of the Winter chapter but of all the act 1 main plot and it really makes you feel how much of a journey youâve been onto!! A3 is so good at showing you the growth of its characters that especially by the end of Winter you really saw how all of them grew in their respective chapters and how cozy they felt in their new home in the remaining chapters, and the fact this chap has those defining character arcâs lines really drive home âoh my god that was a journeyâ i love them sO MUCH....Â
9) Ninth: wE WOOOON!!! Theyâre all so good i just. iâm gonna cry just thinking about it dlfdjlfk i know like, the game has so many content so you know it canât end at the end of Winter but the suspense really was there. BUT YEAH LMAO I LOVE SAKYO DOING THAT IMMEDIATLY, man sure has the eyes on the prize and we love him for that. AND THE GAME NIGHT SCENE they are all sO CUTE and sWEET and theyâre a family now and iâm hHHHHH i love a3 a normal healthy amount that isnât just making me cry thinking about how all of them grew so close even through mixed troupes.
10) Tenth: I am SO happy you were satisfied with the plot so far!! Iâm genuinely so happy that you decided to take that journey with us and that you shared all of this with me, and iâm so so happy you liked it!! There is still so much content and all of it is so worth it!Â
11) Eleventh: Yes!! The flair conversations are all readable on the Mini-Chat tab! So theyâre easily accessible and theyâre sorted in a way thatâs easy to read so you can feel comfortable skipping the flairs if you want until you have seen the stories the flairs are all about. Theyâre all kinda set during the rehearsals (except for some crosstroupe conversation that wouldnât make sense if they were like how the Summer Troupe talks with the Spring Troupe in their Flairs DKLFJDF but itâs okay what is a timeline anyway) so some of them are set pre-development and itâs wild to get back to them. I love rereading Flairs i get emotional everytime.
ANND Thatâs it for this ask! i had a blast reading through your thoughts and iâm so happy and excited!! iâll send you the drive now so you can start digging through it whenever you feel like it :3c good luck grinding for act 2, meanwhile i hope youâll have fun with all the act 1 events i compiled for you!!
(side note i need to update the drive too but itâs mostly act 2 content anyway, the only two act 1 things i need to update on it is Sakuyaâs birthday card i think?? i think Itaruâs is already in act 2 so iâll try to get around to it eventually but itâs so far away anyway) (edit: i forgot that the three cards i got for the latest revival are from act 1 DLKJFD okay so iâm missing three cards -)
The drive has backstages and event stories and it may be a lot and overwhelming ahah. Focus on the event stories for the plot and go back to the backstages whenever you feel like it, no need to read them at the same time, unless you want to in which case everything is set up for you :3c and thereâs a file with cards that arenât associated to events too so... lots of goodies hanging around. Iâll send it to you in DM ;OÂ
Take care and thank you so much for all your thoughts! my inbox remains wide opened for any others thoughts you may have as you go further into it :3c
#ichafantalks a3#i love the winter troupe SO MUCH it's unreal this ask made me cry i was just LDKJFDLK WINTER!!!!!!!#i love your thoughts so much thank you for all of it <33#sonnets-of-beauty#ichareply#long post for ts

11 questions
tagged by @thevikingwoman. thank you!!
1. The most beautiful place you have beenÂ
Ah, a tough one. To me, there is nothing more sublime than the big, wide open empty of the American West. Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons. Utah, and the weird hellscapes of northern Nevada. BUT, on our honeymoon, we went to France: flew into Bergerac and slowly drove north to Paris over the course of several days. The sunflower fields were in full bloom and it was really something else. I also have to say that, while I donât always love where I live in Orange County, the sunsets in Laguna Beach really are the prettiest sunsets in the whole world.
2. Pick a super power. Why that one?Â
Not no sleep, but just less sleep. Iâd love it if I could subsist on just like four hours a night. Iâd get so much more done that way!! Lol.
3. Do you have a comfort movie or show? What is it?Â
Yes, I have several comfort shows. My most frequented are probably Gilmore Girls, Buffy, and Dawsonâs Creek. Right now, on maternity leave, Iâm also taking a GREAT deal of comfort in Beat Bobby Flay lol. Idk, I just really like him!!
4. A creation youâre really proud of?
All of my fanfic Iâm very proud of. I feel it keeps getting better with every work. Iâm very proud of having finished The Dead Season, but I feel like, in terms of writing and storytelling skill, A Funeral feels like my most honed creation so far.Â
5. Something you are looking forward to in the next year or two?
Well, I just had a baby eight days ago, so Iâm looking forward to getting back to normal!!
6. Top 5 video games?
The order here can tend to fluctuate based on where my emotional attachment lies on any given day, but Iâll be as âobjectiveâ as possible. Also I have six because the first two I consider to be a tie:
The Last of Us - This is one of my favorite games because itâs so tightly woven, as a story. The characters and their relationships, in combination with the setting and high stakes horrific atmosphere makes it feel both terrifying and desperate in almost EVERY moment. There is ALWAYS something to lose, and Joelâs longterm character development is both very unique and also extremely realistic, nuanced, and heartbreaking.
Red Dead Redemption 2 - This game, for me, succeeds on the strength of its protagonist. The game itself is beautiful, meandering, dynamic, and the story, while sprawling, is multi-faceted and really advanced in its usage of POV, symbolism, and ambiguity. Itâs impossible for me to choose between RDR2 and TLoU because theyâre such different games. There really is nothing like RDR2, and there is no protagonist like Arthur Morgan, but the narrative of TLoU is just so...perfect. Overall, I think protagonists like Joel and Arthur are sort of paving the way for games that are much more âadultâ in scope. These are the first two games Iâve ever really played that feel exclusively BY adults and FOR adults.Â
Skyrim - I canât even really qualify my love for this game at this point in my life. Itâs like comfort food. Itâs like coming home.
Dragon Age: Inquisition - Itâs an imperfect game, but itâs big and the characters are wonderful. I get lost in the banter, the background dynamics, the politics, and the wealth of opportunity for OC creation and fan works.
Horizon: Zero Dawn - Aloy is such a unique female protagonist, in that she is almost a Byronic Hero. Female Byronic heroes are really rare, and I think I love her for her secret romance, masked with a hefty layer of sarcasm, bitterness, and self-preservation. I love Aloyâs journey, because it begins with one quest (find the men who attacked the Proving and killed Rost) and then becomes a much more existential quest (Aloyâs discovery of her own origin story). The game itself is good, but I think if a sequel is made, itâs going to be fucking REALLY GOOD.
Bloodbourne - Iâve never actually played Bloodbourne lol but Iâve watched my husband play it twice. It is by far the weirdest game, aesthetically, Iâve ever encountered. The bizarre menstrual symbolism and hidden zones are entirely gnarly and beautiful. And I love the storytelling style of Hidetaka Miyazaki, how itâs all shown, or implied. There are no quest markers, no obvious objectives. Entire worlds can be missed through happenstance, or failing to fully investigate one small mystery to its painstaking conclusion.Â
7. A recent favorite anything (food/entertainment/clothing/??)
As previously stated, Iâm very into Beat Bobby Flay lately lol. Dude, Bobby Flay is entirely 100% the man. He is both calmly confident and entirely accomplished as a chef, but also extremely gracious toward his challengers and always willing to concede the loss (though he usually wins lol). That kind of humble confidence is...rare. He reminds me of that thing Solas says in DAI:Â âNo real god need prove himself.â
8. Favorite board game?
I know itâs old school, but I really love Risk. I like playing with my husband, because heâs VERY good, but I learn a lot from him, and though I have only beat him maybe one time ever lol I usually take him by surprise a few times during the game, and thatâs very fun lol.
9. Stealing this one: I know that lots of people have âdinosaurâ or âancient Egyptâ interests as a child; what was something that you were super interested in as a child? Iâd love to learn a new fact about that subject if youâre willing!
When I was a CHILD, I had a definite elves and fairies phase, as well as a metaphysical time travel/scifi phase. My favorite books, which I would read constantly over and over again were Afternoon of the Elves by Janet Taylor Lisle (which has no *actual* elves in it--the elves are like metaphors, honestly explains a lot about my tendency toward fabulism rather than actual fantasy) and A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine LâEngle. Looking back, I still see these books and how they manifest in my preferences today. They really blur genre boundaries--between fantasy, science, and domestic realism. Theyâre about kids having regular kid problems and often experiencing catharsis via âfantasyâ worlds.Â
10. A strange thing you googled recently, if youâre willing to share.Â
Well, Iâve googled a lot of strange things lately. When you have a new baby, youâre always googling strange things lol. But Iâd say, in the past few months, the strangest thing Iâve had to google was basically male and female underwear from the late 1800s. What the fuck does Arthur wear under his pants?? What the fuck is Mary Beth hiding under that skirt?? The most alarming thing I discovered was that women typically wore crotchless drawers around this time. This way they could pee without having to completely remove their myriad of skirts lolÂ
11. You only put ten questions, so Iâll steal a simple one from the previous batch, ie: Five favorite books! Iâve been thinking about some of them lately, so I wanna share:
Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry
The Road by Cormac McCarthy
Tender Morsels by Margo Lanagan
Airships: Stories by Barry Hannah
Cannery Row by John Steinbeck
Iâll tag @buttsonthebeach @morgan-arthur @ladylike-foxes @bearly-tolerable @wrenbee @lyrium-lovesong @ma-sulevin @a-shakespearean-in-paris @hidinginthehinterlands and @idrelle-miocovani
Questions:
Five favorite books?
Five favorite video games?
Favorite visual artist(s) (fan artists and/or traditional)?
Favorite video game protagonist (non-OC) and why?
Whatâs the best meal youâve ever eaten?
Whatâs your dream road trip? Or, if you donât like road trips, whatâs your dream vacation?
Do you like old movies? Iâm talking OLD movies, like golden era, from the 1930s-1950s. Why or why not? Do you have a favorite?
Whatâs something unique and interesting about the place where you live and/or grew up?
If you were going to be transported into the setting of any video game, which would it be and why?
Regardless of where you actually live, would you prefer urban, suburban, small town, or rural living?
What is the most emotional youâve ever gotten over a video game?

My experience/review watching Pokémon the Movie: I Choose You! in theaters (NO SPOILERS)
The day has finally come...I WAS LOOKING FOWARD TO THIS ALL WEEK! After it was first announced in December 2016 that the 20th PokĂ©mon movie would be paying homage to Ashâs origins, I GOT SUPER EXCITED! I was always updated with the news surrounding this film, and got excited every time new information came out (despite some negative reaction by some fans). You can tell by searching through my blog archive...so I pre-ordered the tickets by September, and got the earliest showing with the best seats in the house!
When the day finally came (which was yesterday lol), I got my good olâ high school buddy to go with me, who was a fan of PokĂ©mon and the anime. Of course, it was a special premiere day, and had to dress for the occasion by wearing my Ash Kalos hat, and the original Team Rocket shirt.
Now for my thoughts on the movie...is it my favorite out of all PokĂ©mon movies? Nope, but itâs definitely up there! First off let me just say, that THERE ARE SOOOO MANY EASTER EGGS (a.k.a. past anime/movie references) IN THIS MOVIE! When I get the Blu-ray copy for this (hopefully there is one?), I will be going back to multiple scenes pausing so many shots!
Anyway, the movie overall was really awesome and a fun adventure to watch! It was (as advertised) a retelling of Ashâs journey starting out as a PokĂ©mon trainer, and his road to becoming a PokĂ©mon Master. The ultimate goal in this movie was to see Ho-Oh after it left its Rainbow Wing for Ash to pick up. To be honest, Iâm not really sure if majority of the movie even takes place in the Kanto region o_O A couple nostalgic scenes were re-done beautifully, and teary :â( Some of those scenes really took me back to my childhood watching the old episodes in my VHS player. It wasn't exactly as portrayed in the canon anime, which makes this alternative universe really interesting to think about Ashâs journey. The most notable thing I would have to say about this movie is Charmanderâs development. Itâs really surprising how different it is from the disobedient one we knew when it evolved as a Charmeleon. At one point of the movie (I wonât say much), Ash really did something UNCHARACTERISTIC of him that really caught me off guard with his PokĂ©mon and friends. Then again this is an AU, so I shouldn't be surprised if his attitude is not exactly like the character I grew up with. Definitely keep your eyes on it when watching!
One of my favorite parts was definitely towards the climax when Ash was is in this BIZARRE but familiar environment that really didnât seem to fit when you usually watch PokĂ©mon (youâll have to see it to find out). Again SO MANY REFERENCES caught my eye during that scene, and it doesn't just apply to PokĂ©mon. But Iâm pretty sure what EVERYONE in the theater was shocked about, EVEN ME, was what happened between Ash and Pikachu at the very end of the film...very touching and very cute is all I can say. One final thing I would like to say is THE ENDING + CREDITS SCENE WAS A BLESSING. I WILL NEED TO GIF THOSE WHEN THE DVD COMES OUT (áášá)
As for the characters, the main supporting stars take spotlight! Verity and Sorrel...LOVE THEM! A lot of people might say how rushed their characters were rushed, but it was a 90+ minute movie and they could only do so much. Ash is the main star, and most of the story should revolve around him, so I honestly think both they had enough time to show off who they are, and what their purpose is in the film. Besides both of them being from Sinnoh, Sinnoh Confirmed their backstories...OH MY GOD BRO! I may got spoiled beforehand why Verity was traveling alone with her Piplup (this Piplup really gave me a lot of vibes similar to Dawnâs Piplup), but I DID NOT anticipate one of Sorrelâs flashback scenes which pretty much broke everyoneâs heart in the cinema including mine (itâs still sad thinking about it àČ„_àČ„). Both have solid goals, although Verityâs seems to be more of a personal issue she wants to avoid. Also you definitely have to pay attention to Verityâs scenes since her personal issue with a certain someone wasn't directly given to the audience nor even Ash and Sorrel...just pay attention to detail đ Oh yeah, and if youâre a shipping type of person (multishippers to be exact), thereâs definitely some cute scenes that Verity has with her companions ;) It just makes me wish that Verity and Sorrel can be future canon traveling partners because all three have great chemistry in the movie together as friends, even though if it was just for a short period. Their Ho-Oh adventure/journey is what really made them close.
Although Team Rocketâs involvement was very minimal in the movie, and was really there for comic relief background, it made me happy that they didnât really interfere with the main storyline of Ashâs quest to find Ho-Oh. Ash and Pikachu developed well without their involvement, and writers probably didnât want to put too much time giving a battle scene with them. Sure, I wish they could be used better, but better have them there than not at all right? They were still lovable as always with their goofy antics shown throughout the movie.
Cross, who served to be the big bad rival in the movie, really proved himself to be a real jerk. He is a bit like Paul, only thing is that Cross is more aggressive with his claims. Heâs the type of trainer who is a self-centered brat and believes everything should go his way or else he does things by force. He does share a similarity with Ash though, but Iâm not saying what it is since it is a spoiler. He served as the Alolan flavor of this movie since he was the only one carrying Gen. VII PokĂ©mon. On the other hand we have the cute but mysterious new PokĂ©mon, Marshadow that actually plays a bigger role in the movie than what you initially thought of. Youâd think itâs just there all the time in the background, but you know something is going on as it lurks everywhere throughout the film.
Now there really isnât that much to say about BonjÄ« since he only appears at the later part of the movie. I just wish that the old man had more of a backstory and a reason why he was chasing Ho-Oh all his life. Speaking of which, I was happy that the all of the Legendary Beasts get their big screen spotlight along with Ho-Oh. The other thing I wish was that we get to see what really happened with Ho-Oh in the end since the epic final battle of the movie was a bit questionable.
At the end of the day, me and my friend had such a blast! We even got the promotional TCG card of Ashâs Pikachu (FYI this is a really useful card in competitive play if you play the TCG) We both have A LOT of disagreements when it comes to the PokĂ©mon anime, but both of us really loved and enjoyed the movie. Funny story, there were these 4 girls probably around my age (fangirls to be exact) beside me who were absolutely having a blast watching the movie. They screamed out of joy, shouted when Cross was being an ass, squealed in cute moments, cried in the sad moments, and basically were really into the scenes and characters like singing the PokĂ©mon theme song at the beginning of the movie. Annoying? Yes, but I canât really blame if they had a good time, and I think thatâs the most important thing when you watch things you love with friends to share the moments with (though they probably could have toned it down a bit...Iâm sure they were self-aware they were loud). My friend couldn't stand them, but I just tried to distract him with my noise since I didnât want to ruin the girlsâ fun time beside me. Plus I was a bit talkative too in several scenes of the film. Honestly I wanted to shout at the beginning of the movie because I WAS THAT HYPED, but didnât want to embarrass my friend :p *Shoutout to the girl with the Charmander plush beside me at the AMC Fullerton theater if youâre reading this xD Hope you didnât get too much tears on your plush from some emotional scenes in the movie (âïčâ)
The ultimate question is, should you go see this movie?
ABSOLUTELY! If youâre just a casual fan who doesnât really keep up with the anime or movies after the original, you probably wouldnât enjoy this movie that much. But I would say still watch it if you really love PokĂ©mon! I count each movie as its own thing because none of them are really canon with the main series storyline. Movie 20 really stands out on its own because of how different it is from the rest, notably Ashâs journey getting a brand new fresh reboot, and the fact that there really isnât an antagonist here who is trying to ârule the worldâ by getting an enormous power or whatever. This movie was a celebration of what the series has accomplished over the past 20 years.
However, this is just my opinion, and everyone has different tastes. All Iâm saying is that youâll only know how you truly feel when you see it! If you ask me, the best review of this movie is YOUR REVIEW. And from what Iâm seeing, it really makes me happy to hear most of you guys are seeing it in theaters, and saying how much you enjoyed it. Let's support a great movie with a great dub! If you canât, you can always wait for the DVD release and support them that way! If you want to watch the original Japanese version with English subtitles, be sure to buy the DVD too! Just support any way you can to show your appreciation and love for the PokĂ©mon franchise.
As for my thoughts on spoilers, I will keep that to myself for the time being probably until a couple of weeks after the DVD release...will probably be making some GIFs or reblogging posts about it since Iâm always late to the GIF making game LOL! However if you want to chat about it, feel free to message me OR join my Discord server and chat about it with other people who have seen the movie under the spoiler channel:Â https://discord.gg/mVSgxbp
Welp that was a long post! Iâm pretty sure I have some text/grammar errors here, but whatever Iâm tired and I want to get this posted already ¯\_(ă)_/ÂŻ My next long post will probably be my 2017 PokĂ©Ani highlights...âtil then, PEACE

BLACK SAILS REVIEW EPISODE 102 - II
WELL-FORMED THOUGHTS
The conversation between Flint, Eleanor, and Mr. Scott is the most important of the episode, the season, and perhaps even the entire show. Â As such, I want to quote it in full!
Eleanor:  Why return at all to Nassau?  With money like that and my father out of business, why not run?  Whatâs coming our way canât be outrun. Flint:  But with the money I strip from the Hulk, we could add fifty guns to the fort.  We could build ships to defend our shores and train new men to sail them. We could work the land, grow crops and raise cattle.  Then whoever arrives on our shores first, be it England or Spain, will be in for a most unwelcome surprise.  A nation of thieves. âŠYou have your doubts? Mr. Scott:  Of turning pirates into farmers and soldiers?  Of fighting a war against Whitehall from a sliver in the Atlantic?  Doubt, Captain Flint, does not begin to describe how I am feeling. Flint:  Theyâre not animals, Mr. Scott.  Theyâre men starved of hope.  Give that back to them, whoâs to say what could happen? Eleanor:  Why do this?  Why here? Flint:  Odysseus, on his journey home to Ithaca, was visited by a ghost.  The ghost tells him that once he reaches his home, once he slays all his enemies and sets his house in order, he must do one last thing before he can rest.  The ghost tells him to pick up an oar and walk inland and keep walking until somebody mistakes that oar for a shovel, for that would be the place that no man had ever been troubled by the sea.  And thatâs where heâd find peace.  In the end, thatâs all I want.  To walk away from the sea and find some peace.
This is the moment when Flint gets Eleanor on board with his plan for a stronger, securer Nassau. Â A Nassau so strong and secure that pirates can settle down and become farmers. Â All Flint wants is to be free enough and secure enough that he can leave the sea behind him, and he assumes that everyone else feels the same way. Â It will be fun to see whether or not he is correct!
I had a hard time believing that the pirates of these first few episodes werenât animals and did, in fact, deserve Flintâs vision for them. Â After all, in just this episode we see them pissing on corpses, beating prostitutes, and murdering innocent men. Â I think weâre meant to have this visceral reaction to the crudeness of the pirates weâve seen so far, because that is how âcivilizationâ sees them. Â Itâs only as our story goes along and we get various charactersâ backstories that we understand what pain, trauma, and abuse led them to a life of debauchery and cruelty. Â A good reminder that first impressions are often only part of the story.
FRAGMENTED THOUGHTS
Thatâs a lot of nudity. Â As I mentioned earlier, it still feels exploitative and cheap.
I would love to know more about the history of Flint and Vaneâs rivalry!
I donât know how to feel about Eleanorâs relationship with Max. Â Apparently, she only recently split from Vane, so they canât have been together long. Â And can someone truly be together when one party is paying for the company of the other? Â I do believe Max loves Eleanor, but I donât really believe itâs fully reciprocated.
Silver is seriously so smart, both with his misdirection on the beach and with his memorizing the contents of the page.
Max is also so smart, making the evaluator inspect every single pearl.
Flint: Â âI never much liked your father; too caught up in appearances.â Â LOL, okay, James.
Silver:  âDo you have a candlestick orâŠperhaps a heavy shoe? Idelle:  *pulls out sword*
I think that might be our first hint that background prostitutes are also real people with lives and intelligence (and not just Max as the token Special Prostitute). Â Also, hello Idelle! Â I didnât realize you were a part of the show since the beginning!
Itâs only episode two and we already have lovers being torn apart by their own choices.  Friendly reminder that this show is a tragedy  This is one of my favorite things, though, that relationships are rarely broken because of outside influence or lack of interest, but because of fundamentally different worldviews and goals.  Far more nuanced and interesting!
Honestly, what even is Jackâs hair?
Ninja!Flint makes his first appearance when he goes to the house of a Mysterious Woman and collapses. Â Heâs so tired! Â If I hadnât already fallen in love with him before, I would now. Â Nothing quite reaches my Female Id like a strong man showing weakness.

I saw:
The Lair of the White Worm- LOL!!!!!!!!!!
Ok, I guess I should say more.....
An begginer archeologist (played by a young and absolutely adorable Peter Capaldi) digs up one heck of a big reptile skull. The locals have a tradition of such a beastie, but nobody really believes such things, not even the two women running the rooming house after the mysterious disappearance of theor parents. I say no one, bit an aristocratic woman nearby actually more than believes. Her serpent god was worshipped but those dang pushy christians actually built right on top if the temple, as often happens when religions take over an area. But her god is a real live critter and she herself isnât exactly human, what with the pop out fangs and venom that spreads the âinfectionâ like a vampire. And now she wants a nice little sacrifice, in the traditional viginal what with gods being so fussy. Can the fang gang be stopped...
Which tells you nothing about the nature of the film that you wouldnât guess from the horror genre. Actually, the film is a comedy really, and a Ken Russell one at that. If you havenât seen a Ken Russell film, he tended to go for scenes of hallucinations and/or dreams containing a great deal of imagery based around a collision of religion and sex. For instance, in this film, overcome by venom one of the young women sees a vision of a bunch of nuns being brutally raped by roman soldiers while Jesus on the cross is entwined with a giant snake, there are close ups of the fang lady and the whole background is a wall of flames. Now, by the standards of the director, the film is rather tame with only fleeting bits that go to that deranged extreme, but still some folks might be horrified. Personally I tend to find his extremely overt manifestations of his internal obsessions to be rather amusing. Most people would try to restrain or conceal such things, using subtlety to work it in, but not him! LOL
Anyway, back when the movie came out I remember seeing reviews that were scathing and yet made me curious to see it...which really wasnât an option back then. I forgot about it. Occasionally Iâd be reminded but still only got around to see it now. Maybe the fact I could find nothing shocking is just the fact Iâm watching it now instead of at that more innocent age. Whatever, it was really silly fun and I suspect that was the only goal to begin with.Â
Rocketship X-M- A spaceship sets out to the moon, but an accident occurs. They end up on Mars instead to discover that a race of humans inhabited it. Unfortunately the Martians had invented the atom bomb long ago, so now itâs a post apocalyptic world full of violent primatives. Some of the astronauts are killed in the encounter, but the survivors still have the near impossible journey home to warn the Earth of their possible future if we donât learn by example.
Not that humanity learns by example very well traditionally do they?Â
There is an interesting element to this early 1950s movie, beyond the warning about the dangers of the bomb. One of the crew is a woman, and the strange balance between the progressive and the sexist is rather fascinating. She is a scientist critical to the development of the rocket fuel (interesting how they send these important scientists in the first flight!) and she wears clothes that are as practical as the guys. But, on the other hand, there is a bit of needling about her having neglected âwomanlyâ duties in pursuit of her career.Â
There is also a scene where she and the lead scientist do calculations to figure out how to cope with the emergency and they come up with differing answers. Does he even have them check their answers? No, he says they will use his numbers. She protests, but ends up yeilding and apologizing for insisting. And he forgives her, saying she was just acting like a woman for one! What the??? But guess what? The fix they deploy goes disasterously wrong. So, theoretically, this could be because they didnât use her figures!! No one brings this up....
Ignore the science of the film, even when itâs as basic as how objects float around but people donât inside the cabin. It has a socially relevant issue with the comment on the threats of nuclear war, a rare for the era woman as active participant to the science and adventure, a touch of romance, and a tragic ending suggesting the exploration of space is worth the sacrifices. Itâs certainly an interesting vintage science fiction film.Â
I Am Not Your Negro- Itâs a documentary that takes the words of writer James Baldwin about race and uses images to illustrate not just the history he is talking about but painful relevance the thoughts still have decades later. Powerful and intelligent, it did remind me how little of his writings Iâve actually read. I need to correct that.
Itâs funny how you find yourself reflecting on personal chains of thought when watching something like this, even when you donât expect it at all. He talks about how in a relationship with a white woman they could not be seen together in public, pretending not to know each other. Meanwhile I remember a guy I was friends with that kept secret a relationship he was having with a mutual friend. Hurt heâd kept it from me, and probably more because Iâd secretly fallen for him, I asked him why he hadnât said anything and he said it was because he thought Iâd be upset because she white and he was black. I was devistated because not only had he not realized at all how I felt about him, I realized he knew me so little despite our friendship.
Or the film talks about lynchings and I think about my high school teacher that warned the class about her difficulty with white males because back when she was a girl her favorite cousin was lynched.Â
Talk about people not being around each other and I remember how one of the best friends I ever had told me when we were in third grade she couldnât be my friend anymore because I was white and she was black. I wasnât angry because I knew her parents were upset by our friendship, going so far as to bring a girl they approved of but who bullied me cruelly, to my birthday part. My friend was under a lit of pressure to dump me and hang with the bully, so how could I hate her? As the bullyâs gang picked on me my now ex-friend would stand back silently and stare at her feet. She never looked me in the eyes again.
Or how about that moment my heart broke for a friend when she explained that a beautiful woman in a photo was ugly because her natural hair was  ânappyâ and her skin was âtoo darkâ....the same shade as her own.Â
Or my parents telling me about a black friend of theirs getting beaten up by cops for âwalking in the wrong side of the roadâ back in the 1960s.Â
Or....
So many memories rippling out, a conversation here, and an expression there. Â
Thing is, if it can churn up the past to someone like me who isnât black but just happened to live where I had a lot of friends that were, this movie must be so much more intense for someone that has lived that experience. Excellent film, but possibly not what I should have watched when Iâve been feeling so discouraged about the current America. I am having a difficult time hoping lately in rural southern Trump-land......
