Fruits Basket, SE03, Ep3
This ep is exactly like se02, ep 24, meaning it was divided clearly into two parts. While the graduation theme unties the two parts, you can point things out exactly like ep,24:
1st part : Machi’s story= the important part.
2nd part: scattered parts here & there that concern yuki, ep, 24 his interactions with akito, here his interactions with Motoko).
plus, an ep cliff hanger: (e, 24 the dvd given to kureno, here, Isuzu’s mysterious fate).
it is exactly the same even a small kyo/tohru moment!. School graduation instead of the zodiac’s new year gathering.
Really awkward pacing, but that’s furuba, we celebrate when they DO connect dots for once! lets talk abt the REAL ep: MACHI.
-Machi’s awkward presence:
Although I love Machi, I’ve voiced my concerns abt her character in Furuba:
It seemed that Machi was solely created to be a step in yuki’s success journey more than a character on her own right. After getting motherly love (tohru) leaving the nest, Yuki needed friendship (kakeru), then as an independent man, he needs romantic love: (Machi). This is all fine initially but I was yearning for more individuality for Machi as a character. All furuba characters were given space to be unique including minor characters like Motoko who narrated her own story each time she’s on screen & we lived it with her within two seasons & a number of eps.
However, Machi’s background was introduced thro her brother’s exposition in se02 & that moment was a yuki/ kakeru bonding moment.
Thro kakeru’s exposition  we learned how similar yuki & machi are (the parental neglect, high expectations, cold sibling relationship, Big brother saves himself by himself, big brother pushing for redemption & the younger sibling’s still trapped silently ). While that makes for romantic appeal between the two which makes the writer’s job easier, it steals from Machi individuality.
Then her part in ep, 24 was shown & I was given hope for Machi’s individuality as her own inner voice spoke volumes abt her as a person away from yuki (romantic interest) or Kakeru (big brother). Having a lot of screen time, while can make a character more believable to the audience, is never a factor in character’s depth nor individual worth. Heck! kyo (part of the main trio & the main character’s love interest) has only ONE ep in se02 to explore his issues & by far it is my fave ep in se02 as it established kyo’s trauma, psyche, mental issues & emotional baggage better than I could ever imagine! You can DO WONDERS with little time if you knew what to do. That’s what happened with Machi this ep (half ep).
-Machi’s shines! (trauma & romance):
I was so relieved to learn that altho both Machi & yuki despised perfection as it suffocated them, the writer (thankfully) went abt a different approach with Machi. Unlike Yuki who went silent cuz he felt his voice didn’t matter as he was used as a tool, Machi went silent cuz she was was NOT needed, & not only discarded but painted as WRONG. If you admit that raising me this way is wrong, then what does this make me? What should I do with myself? I’m wrong! boring, a failure, & a presumed killer!! all while I was absolutely doing my best! all while I was having good intentions! It is devastating but It makes Machi real. A character on her own right with her own trauma, struggle, pain & outlook on life. Although, the writer made the whole yuki/Machi meeting orchestrated by Kakeru to quickly make the two siblings one step closer, it worked cuz kakeru chose to not interfere after setting the scene. He played a subtle mach maker & tried to find happiness for his sister silently. Kakeruy is yuki’s best buddy & Machi becoming the girlfriend, the trio will have to hang out more which will slowly but surely warm Machi towards Kakeru. While the flat visit is the part where Machi open the lid to Yuki with a spark of romance at the end, the chalk scene is the romantic part! Not only did Yuki noticed her panic & saved her by breaking a piece of chalk, she secretly remembered his promise! “ lets make footprints on the snow”. The snow that was another source of anxiety attack, is now sth she looks forward to & prays for! Truly romantic!!! Well-done writer.
Side Notes:
I know furuba is shoujo & it’s abt love, but C’mon! where did Nao/ Motoko come from??!! XDD Who is left without love interest? Kyo’s rejected fangirl loved by one of kyo’s buddies? The maids in love with Akito? Momiji? Who does Kimi love besides money? XD
Yuki once observed that kyo makes tohru happy with small things, Today he did the same! A broken piece of chalk.
Yuki/ Machi romantic scenes contrast Yuki/ tohru forced romantic scene at the earlier seasons. There is no lame cringy lines like “ I’ll kidnap you & go to a vacation” or kissing a ribbon. There is NO acting or pretentious lines. Here a piece of chalk did the trick, an understanding of her tears & a head pat, a promise to walk on snow together! Congratulations Yuki, You made it into romantic boyfriends category! XD. also, good writing!
The Bra scene is the real comedy in the ep.
Arisa’s “ kyon, we won’t forgive you if you hurt tohru” is gold cuz kyo WILL. When it’s time to confess he knew kyoko & she HATES him & doesn’t forgive him, tohru would be hurt! Even if she wasn’t in love with kyo!!! Knowing your beloved’s last words were hateful is painful!! Add to this that tohru loves kyo & would be struggling between forgiving him or not!! Add to this that kyo might NOT want to be forgiven!!
“ I won’t forgive you”. kyo’s haunting reminder that he’s unforgivable is now shared by kyoko, yuki, Hana & Arisa!!
look, you might argue that furuba’s romantic writing might be a bit awkward with all sorts of romantic couples, age gaps, the need for everybody to be in love one way or the other & so on, but the traumatic behavioral writing is the best!!!!! I was never disappointed with how Takaya write abused traumatized children’s behavior. One of my fave scenes is yuki/ kyo in the stairs in se02 where kyo lashed out on yuki & yuki was over it. While that scene was rightfully celebrated for yuki’s triumphant attitude as he got over his trauma, I love it for the realistic trauma filled attitude of kyo, all charged with kyoko’s flashback! He’s in deep & he’s all by himself! Kyo will hurt tohru cuz he loves her just like how kazuma hurt him by forcefully taking his bracelet cuz he loves him. Kyo will be thinking it is for the best, who would want to be with someone that kyoko of all ppl hates!
I’ll tolerate all the weird love couples in furuba, but the moment trauma is written weakly I’ll drop the show. There is NO way, kyo will confess kyoko’s lines then go “sorry abt that tohru, we’re good?”
Back to Machi, I really hope that her trauma isn’t merely wrapped up cuz yuki loved her. Furuba was never abt love heals, it is abt love helps. We might not see more of her trauma for reasons of space, or not related to the current plot lines, but I really hope we hear her talk abt herself with yuki even few lines. Although, I feel that the focus now will be on setting her for yuki’s next stage in character development: honesty in the love confession. He’ll tell her abt the curse as the trailer hinted at. That’s their first love life struggle. But if I were to take a guess, it will be dealt with quickly like her trauma. She loves yuki dearly & as long as he walks with her in snow (human or rat, lol), it’s all good. <3
Hior’s mom is love.
Kagura’s new style is love! she isn’t dressed overly cutely anymore, but had a more comfortably style & I love her hair! also her friendship with Isuzu! <3. I wish Isuzu would really know there are ppl worried abt her in her life. Haru isn’t the only one.
Akito put Isuzu in the cat room, didn’t she? The place she left is similar to the place young Kazum wandered to in se01, ep25. & those scissors....
I never thought that the mere sight of shigure’s face will disgust me. XD. I still find him so intriguing, but yeah need time to get over the fact that he slept with Ren & counted it even with Akito, then slept with Akito afterwards! EWWW! so disgusting & I’m here to see this drama escalate!
Yuki / Machi moment was interrupted! XD It’s not fun when it happened to you, yuki? XD.

stumbling across a billions mystery in a roundabout way and then also solving it in a roundabout way: an adventure
undertaken with @nothingunrealistic, whose posts i also use as sources / link to as references throughout here
so it’s at least been mentioned in tags before, but we’ve been wondering about this promo picture from 5x09
Tumblr media
wherein rian is clearly in taylor’s office while someone else is at her desk, across from winston, who is partly visible, and we’ve been wondering if rian was going to move desks in 5x09 or 5x08, but 5x08 has aired and she was sitting at that usual desk adjacent to winston’s, at the row furthest from the entrance to the tmc niche, but on the side closer to taylor’s office, rather than closer to the office lauren (and previously sara) uses.
today i was looking at these first two promo pics ft. rian from 5x11 and i noticed that she seems to be sitting on a desk that is furthest from the entrance but closer to taylor’s office, and at first i was like oh hey, this means she’s still at her usual desk in 5x11, and still sits next to winston! but then i was looking closer at some details and quickly got confused about what part of her desk rian was sitting on, and where it was positioned relative to taylor’s office, and to the other desks in that space. you can see that rian is sitting on one corner of her desk, and that corner is adjacent to the corner which is actually a concave indentation for the chair / sitting area, as all the desks are L shaped with the chair in that inner angle. you can also see in the second picture in which she is talking to taylor that the side of the desk is visible, where it should’ve had another desk pushed up against it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
at this point i was telling soph @nothingunrealistic about the fact i’d seemingly confirmed rian was still at her usual desk next to winston’s but that i was confused about the tmc office layout, which is not in and of itself new or unusual lol, so we were consulting other shots & images of the desks and their position relative to each other and the two side offices. i made this handy diagram using a picture of rian’s desk from 5x07
Tumblr media
she would have to be sitting on either of the spots the arrows are pointing to, and when you look at where her chair is in the shots from 5x11, she has to be sitting on the edge of the desk the arrow on the right is pointing to, but there should be a desk flush against that, preventing us from seeing the side of rian’s desk that’s exposed in the 5x11 pics. so, at this point, we could sort of forget about trying to reconcile precise angles in various shots, because it was pretty evident that rian’s desk has to be in a new position for the 5x11 shots to be possible, and we were wondering if her desk had been moved apart from the others. i mentioned that it could be a Social Distancing thing, which would then surely be applied to all desks, not just rian’s, but that i thought the desks were in a regular arrangement in 5x10, which is when rian’s hair seems suddenly & significantly longer and the episode summary mentions that axe cap returns to the office, so we’d theorized that if there was going to be a pandemic timeskip, it would happen between 5x09 and 5x10. soph then mentioned that the desks at axe cap in the 5x11 promo pics may in fact be spaced out more than usual, which sure supported that now all desks were positioned apart from each other, and they had also brought up this shot of taylor in 5x10 with the tmc desks behind them, which i did some Close Observational Analysis on.
Tumblr media
there’s no way that with the usual desk grouping we’ve seen throughout season 5, where there’s a 4x2 rectangular group of desks, there should be desk edges that are not in line like that, or there should be any visible gap between desks, so this did seem like solid enough confirmation desks had been moved and spaced out. and while zooming in on the picture, i also noticed that there seems to be someone sitting at the desk to our right, i.e. the one attached to the Lime Green underline there. that desk ought to be rian’s, if you compare it to what we see in 5x11 and to the fact that the original placement of her desk would be closest to where that desk in question is now apparently located. even though we can’t really see much, it looks like the person is wearing a dark / black shirt and an open greyish layer, which matches what we see rian wearing in this shot of her from the other tmc 5x10 promo pics.
Tumblr media
that picture of rian seems to be taken in the same scene as those daytime shots taylor and lauren, wherein they are wearing the same outfits as they are in the later nighttime shots, so rian would presumably also be wearing the same outfit; this could be her at that desk with her hair behind her shoulders. and in the course of having that picture of rian zoomed in, i then accidentally realized something further about the picture, which is that: prior we had speculated that, since the desk/table rian was leaning at didn’t look like any spot in the usual larger desk cluster, she might be in taylor’s office in that pic. but with the new knowledge that desks were in different locations / arranged differently, and simply taking a closer look, i realized that rian, like winston and lauren in those other promo shots, is actually again perched on her own desk.
Tumblr media
doesn’t quite make sense with taylor’s office layout anymore but Does make sense with the picture forming here. her desk is moved closer to the window, with no desks immediately adjacent to it. the corner of the desk scene in the lower right corner of the shot, which would be the desk seen most directly behind taylor via those shots of them talking to lauren that night, is almost surely winston’s desk, again approximately closest to its original position.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
these shots of winston and lauren are likely from the same scene as those daytime shots of rian and taylor; taylor may be addressing them, while these three are simultaneously Listening. there seems to be another desk a ways across from winston’s, which can’t be rian’s, so there’s at least one other desk that isn’t theirs in that general space. lauren might be standing on the other side of winston’s chair. comparing this shot of winston’s desk, and the apparent shot of it in 5x10 behind taylor, it seems like the way rian and winston’s desks are angled, being kind of on the same diagonal, means that when they’re sitting down, they’re facing each other.
then, last but not least, soph watched the s5 part 2 trailer again and caught this shot of axe cap behind wendy that could’ve given us this “wow, desks are spaced apart” clue a lot earlier, but oh well lol.
Tumblr media
this is definitely the lower floor of axe cap, what with the front desk and the staircase in the background, and in addition to [people wearing masks in the background] there’s also those Distancing floor markers, what seem to be bottles of hand sanitizer on both those workstation desks there, and, of course, there’s confirmation the desks at axe cap are spaced out. so, a mystery that could’ve been solved before it began by looking really closely at that brief shot of wendy walking through the office, but instead was discovered through looking at pics of rian while having noted and been bothered by the fact someone else sits at rians desk in one 5x09 promo picture, because Do Not Separate Them (Winston And Rian) and, it seems like while they have been separated, only because everyone’s desks have been, and while they aren’t directly adjacent, they’re now facing each other, vs you know, being more at a right angle to each other originally. and once that mystery was discovered, we solved it with the power of friendship and teamwork and a tendency to get into this kind of stuff and determinedly figure it out via a bunch of references already collected. it was fun!
Bonus Mystery Via Promo Images:
in that 5x11 collection, there is also a picture of taylor sitting down in some office: we aren’t certain what office it is, or who they’re talking to. but they’re wearing shoes we’ve never seen before, with soles both noticeable higher than usual, and white, so we don’t miss it.
Tumblr media
we’ve definitely never seen taylor with these shoes, and you gotta wonder what the fashion change is for...are the soles more supportive / comfortable? and re: the possibility they could be for comfort, i also noticed that taylor not only chose to put their ankle against their knee to make the shoes visible front and center, but also that they were even capable of doing so. asia, taylor’s actor, said in an interview that the clothes in taylor’s costumes can be physically constraining and inhibit their range of motion:
"Slipping into Taylor’s wardrobe, shoes, pants, belt, the tie that’s, you know, all the way up, the shirt that’s buttoned all the way up, it limits one’s movement, actually, in a way [...] I mean, Taylor, for instance, can’t cross their legs comfortably in the pants that they’re wearing. And that will inform the way that Taylor is sitting in a chair, or the way that Taylor is standing."
(helpfully transcribed by soph, of course) so presumably their usual habit of crossing their ankles is due to the fact they often can’t cross their legs comfortably, just as asia stated, but here they’re doing exactly that, and not only is it even possible for them to manage it, but they do not act like they’re uncomfortable or this is a challenge. so now i’m wondering if taylor’s chosen to wear both shoes and pants that are both unusually Comfortable for them, and sure further wondering if there’s a reason for this, especially after all that desk layout analysis sure confirmed that the pandemic has affected some norms on the show. interesting!!! we are out here noticing things, hence, this whole post. hope you enjoyed this journey, but that’s okay if not because we at least did!

For A Greater Good Fun Facts and Self Assesment (spoilers)
Long Post
Tumblr media
What worked and what didn’t:
I think the overall structure worked pretty well. The most difficult part was, with the plot and subplot already created, scattering all those ideas throughout the text in such a way that at least made some sense. I regret not writing more about Mer Yankelevich, I feel like the crumbs I left on the way were not enough; in my attempt to make it subtle it lacked information about her. The key piece was of course her sister, and I should have introduced her sooner.
MC’s evolution. I feel like Kate’s learnt a lot with this experience (I’m not only referring to the Deathly Hallows or Grindelwald) When it started, she was very discreet and kept a low profile, not knowing what to do really, not taking more risks than necessary. And then she ended poisoned and splinching just to protect a document she thought was important. I hope her evolution is noticeable for the reader.
Worldbuilding. Grabbing HP concepts that were forgotten and full of potential, plus a dash of original ideas from me and blending them with muggle features was my absolute favourite part of the process.
On that note, I dont own these concepts: Durmstrang, Igor Karkarov, Nerida Vulchanova, umbrella flowers, fanged geraniums, billywigs, Appare Vestigium, glow-worms, trick wand, chamaleon ghouls,
If you’ve read the fic and thought: “everything happened so fast” or got a general odd feeling about the timeline it's because I made a series of  monumental mistakes: setting a chapter limit, telling you about it and then tried to stick to it.  At first the idea sounded nice: this is my first “big” story  with complicated components. I should (and I did) do an outline of what I want to happen in each chapter and stick to it methodically so I don't forget what's happening or lose track of the plot. Well...it kind of backfired. So I wrote the first 3 chapters and at that point I thought “okay everything is going as planned, I’m going to put it out there”, bam, instantly cursed. After that it got ridiculously difficult to make the story that I wanted. Why? I needed chapter space that I convinced myself I couldn’t add. Dumb.
The major consequence of this was the lack of character backgrounds. It started out good, but as I kept writing and publishing I realised that I missed some great opportunities to make amazing ocs. That’s Corentin’s fault in a way: he wasn't going to be a major character, really, just a piece to help Kate a bit. But we all fell in love with him so what was I supposed to do? Also, Sheyi Mawut owns my heart and he got just a bit of spotlight. A shame.
I wish I had written more about them, but I think I wasn’t ready just yet to make it even more complicated.I just wanted to prove I could concoct a mystery plot and now that I know I can manage a fair amount of information I think I can take it a step further and deepen new ocs a little bit more.
I’m thinking about the datura series and I know why I got blocked and tired of writing it; it wasnt going anywhere because I wasnt prepared, and I didn’t do the months of outlines and planning that I did with this one. I’ll come back to the datura story one day, subjecting it to a sever rewrite. The ideas are there, I just need to be organised.
Although the chapter limit was problematic it was also a good exercise of managing space and deciding which things were unnecessary for the story. I dont think there’s any filler chapters, perhaps the last ones, but there is important information there too so... However this sentence  from the blog  wordsandstuff reassured me (and I think I did a good job at that?)
If you set out to write 10 parts and you write a fantastic story in 8, you haven’t failed and it’s not too rushed. Concise writing is an underrated talent. Focus on how effectively you engage the reader, not for how long.
I spent more than year writing this! When I started, I had a lot of ideas, I wrote the last two chapters then the first 3 and I really thought it was going to be that way with the rest of the story... okay... lesson learnt. #humbled
Other thoughts:
I received a couple of comments on ao3 that said that they were pleasantly surprised. Maybe I should change the tags because they are misleading? Clearly this wasnt what people were looking for lol.
One particular comment stood out to me and quoting it said:  “You did not choose the easy way with a fiction with so few characters from the fandom.”  And I’ve been thinking about this since I read it. It didn’t occur to me that there were few mystery fics (maybe I should write more things like that? Maybe throwing some power couple detective work 👀 ) In any case, I’m glad  I contributed with something different to the fandom, and the fact that the Charlie bits are very scarce but people who read it still liked it is really flattering.
I wanted to make sure that all the characters had strengths and flaws, I didnt want to severus-snape them so maybe I overdid it with that bit of introspection kate does at the end...
Also, I did the kiss and fade thing twice to mention sex. I know some people dont like that but since it wasnt the point of the story and I havent done research on how to write sex scenes I didnt include them. I have that on my “to learn” list.
Conclusions:
Writing the whole thing was incredible. It's my first ‘big’ project and its not a great work (there are some things I wish I did better, thats what you get when you are an agatha christie wannabe) and not writing more character backgrounds will haunt me to this day,  but I think it's at least good for a first series and I’m proud of it. I loved spending hours doing research and trying to piece together this puzzle. And of course I’m not an expert and I dont want to sound pretentious (like this is my first story) but if you are planning to write this type of genre I can be another source of tips and tricks for you.
If I read the story after a while and I dont cringe, I would call that a success.
FUN? FACTS!
Bakunawa really belongs to Filippines mythology
Tumblr media
Snapdragons have different meanings, one of them being: “grace under pressure or inner strength in trying circumstances”
Tumblr media
The entrance to Grindelwald’s room was going to be in the duelling classroom, strangely shaped as a triangle. I had this system where one of the round candle lamps descended and lined up with a line on the floor (serving as separation for duels) it created the Deathly Hallows symbol. I couldn’t make that work because it wouldn't make any sense for Nerida Vulchanova to shape a room like that.  Here are some sketches:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lucius Malfoy was going to appear as the Ministry employee that goes to Durmstrang, but after revising the events of the OoP I realised it was impossible.
Kent Jorgensen was going to be around Kate’s age and the charms teacher and he would have a small crush on her. After seeing some pics of Pen Medina, I rewrote the character completely.
The series was going to be 6 chapters long (I’m glad I decided not to) one for each month. The chapter names were ridiculous: January of Beginnings, February of reputation, March of Students, April of Discoveries, May I? and June of Endings. #tragic
The Dolohov family was going to be a part of the plot but I had to erase that part because it was unlocking another layer of complexity that I just couldnt handle.
I dont remember exactly the chapter but I got really confused with the names Rhode and Hodges and there’s one chapter where I accidentally mixed them (I corrected it I think), but for a while I could stop calling Rhode, Hodges, and vice versa lmao
Here are some sketches that helped me describe and imagine things
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Thank you for accompany me in this journey, especially if you endured the process with me lmao. You’ve been here for over A YEAR! <3 Mindblowing
Also I’d love to know your opinions about the way you read the story, I mean, I know some people read it as I published, and some other readers found the story already finished, what are the differences? Should I stop the updating system and drop a story all at once? I know it is difficult to keep up with a complex story if there’s a lot of weekly or monthly gaps between the chapters, so I wanted to know.
Sending you a virtual hug 💜💜

first: WAHHHHHHHHH 😭😭😭 I got so emotional!!! so emotional!!!! so much that I can’t even do this first second pattern bc I have SO MANY thoughts!!!!!!! I’m writing this in my notes instead of straight into the askbox so u know it’s serious businessℱ
ok so debut night!!! I was like ahah yeah it’s a tragedy whatever it’ll be fun to start out with and then the voice acting was SO good that it knocked me out of the park and I almost cried haha. it’s crazy how good the voice acting in a3 is like I love how the dialogue and voice acting works well together bc like it’s limited but so effective!! u can so very clearly see and understand the style they’re going for. especially like tsumugi’s death scene... the Talent jumped out it really did... uh and ok so. I think I may be a littleeee confused abt the play bc I had always interpreted tasukus last lines as raphael to be like abt his being secretly in love with michael. but now that I’m actually reading the line that’s like oh don’t fall for a human it only ends in misery I know that all too well or whatever... ig the implication is that raphael was in love with another human / the same lady michael was in love with in the play. side note I had to go back and edit the proper names in instead of tasuku and tsumugi lol... but speaking of!! speaking of the voice acting and the play itself I 1) love how blatantly obvious it is when tsumugi goes for that grander, tasuku like style of delivery!! like u could just so easily feel the difference it was wild... and 2) tsuzuru is once again spot on with his writing, lol... I felt that like raphaels inability to save or help michael really parallels how tasuku feels abt tsumugi so well, and it’s wonderful that they r able to resolve things and tasuku can properly compliment him on his acting where the angels fail to do so. it’s very good. and I think the play rly highlights (for me at least) that like. to tasuku, it was tsumugi who was sort of an unreachable existence. like were he to idolize and respect someone’s acting, it would be tsumugi. and I think that like caring carries over into their roles really well, because I think in michael’s love for a human tasuku sees like... tsumugi’s style of acting. the heart that he’d lost while within the god troupe. mb I’m losing my mind a little but ah. the play rly works with their relationship so well!! im very excited to see the other winter ppl get main roles tho—same for all the troupes!!! now this ask is too long so I’ll have to do another part lol
going to start off this second part of the ask abt hisoka bc oh my GOD. hisoka. like I was just thinking “hm where r the winter troupe cgs anyways” and then BAM. hisoka CRYING???? especially since he doesn’t seem that emotional it was a really hard hit!!! and who tf is august.... ok well actually theory time!! skipping ahead to the end theres that note that like mentions December and April and. not to expose my friend but very many years ago (a couple years before a3 was launched, at the very least) she wrote this story where there were like 12 orphan assassins and they were all named after months. I remember the main dude was named dec lol. coupled with my “hisoka is capable of murder” bit? listen.... I’m not saying anything but I’m also not not saying anything if u feel me. also I feel like assassin / thief with mysterious background is a common trope!! that was silver from the pokĂ©mon adventures manga too... why is this my reference point lmao. anyways I’m unclear if assassins would make it into a3 but like.... if the yakuza and supernatural stuff makes it in...
okay moving away from conspiracy theories and into emotions!!! the quotes from like EVERY mankai actor before the final production made me SO emo... and yay!!! they won!!!! (though admittedly I almost had a heart attack when no one clapped) but they won!!!! that ending cg!!!! and I adore how sakyo immediately goes after god troupe man (I know his name is reni I just don’t feel like calling him that) for the money lol it’s just so sakyo-like. also I love the lil mixed troupe interactions!! I found the game night ch so fun.... ahh, now I wanna reread that ch since it was so good lol
all in all I was super satisfied ahh!! I am SO excited to start up spring troupe again (HELLO character development!!! and chikage) and I’m even MORE excited to get thru all the act 1 events!!!! as a final note, is there any way to reread or replay the flair conversations? I didn’t want any spoilers for the plays while I was doing the practices for them so I kinda sped thru the first time ahah...
HELLO FRIEND IM SO HAPPY TO GET SUCH A LENGHTY ASK ABOUT WINTER IM LKDJFLKDJFLKFD  Winter makes me feel shrimps emotions (i know the whole “shrimps can see more colors than humans can’t comprehend” thing has been disproved but i’m not letting go of that expression, i REALLY feel emotions humans can’t comprehend anymore and i’m going to make it everyone else’s problem)
1) First about the voice acting, rIGHT this is just so fascinating to me!!! I remember after act 2 i came back to reread the main act 1 chapter and i was so thrown out by how GOOD the voice acting was, especially for the first few troupes having to convince you they’re not comfortable or good at acting yet. Winter whole thing is that they’re more subtle and mature and you really feel that with their voice acting, Tsumugi’s voice especially knock it off the park anytime he’s on screen.
2) Second: what does it say about me that i’ve never, ever considered your reading a possibility because i was so set on “oh Raphael you’re in love with Michael sooooo bad you see it as a tragedy already because you can see him throw his life away” i didn’t even consider “maybe Raphael went through that too”. Though i guess if we’re going with that reading i can totally see “The Woman” they let themselves consumed by easily be a representation of acting or even more the God Troupe, with Raphael/Tasuku knowing to step away before it consumes him completely while Michael/Tsumugi, by his love and passion, pushed himself until he broke, which fits and it hurtsssss god Winter plays hits so hard.
3) Third: oh god yeah when Tsumugi goes for Tasuku’s acting it’s just. It makes me SO uncomfortable, i’ve experienced this scene like three times by now and the third time i was just “can i skip it i can’t go through this again i can’t Tsumugi i love you i can’t do this”. It doesn’t match the play at all and it just throws everyone off balance, and Tsumu you could have told theM YOU WANTED TO DO THAT.... god
4) Fourth: I LOVE YOUR READING SO MUCH I LOVE IT I LOVE IT YES YOU’RE RIGHT!!! Just as we follow Tsumugi let his passion consumes him until he breaks, Tasuku’s character arc really jumps out in Raphael, like, everything you say!!!  The way Tasuku/Raphael knew how the feelings Tsumugi/Michael felt would hurt him on the long run but he didn’t know what to do about it until it was too late, the regrets and the way Raphael voices his frustrations.... Tasuku struggles to be honest without acting (Tasuku pls i love you) but having such a role really help him expressing all he feels about Tsumugi and i’m HHHH this is so good so so good!!! but yeah i also love that Tasuku finally manages to actually compliment Tsumugi naturally, that he understands he can’t let him destroys himself again and it’s just gnhhhhh Tasuku is so kind and considerate and i care about him so much....!!!
5) Fifth: “i’m losing my mind a little” winter mood, winter mood winter mood- (though every troupe’s mood tbh but Winter is gnhhhhh kdhd hdhjf??? you feel me) (i am BIASED i can’t help it TwT) but yeaH i’m looking forward to see how you react to the others plays because the roller coaster juST BEGUN!!!
Onto part 2... Winter Troupe Chapter Feels... 2!
6) Sixth: DLFJDFKLDF HISOKAAAAAAAAAA I LOVE HIM SO MUCHHHHH. Hisoka crying fucked me up so bad!! so so bad!! Like on my first read i didn’t know what to think of him as he starts out very apathic to his troupe and then the more it goes on the more you can feel he starts to open up and i’m soft for this sort of slow burn, but then this whole scene happened and it HIT ME IN THE FACE, he was crying, i was crying, we were all crying, the Unopening Door opened a flood of emotions i can’t cope with. He sounds SO VULNERABLE during that scene and i know all of the Winter Troupe united on “taking care of him” but that’s really the moment i went “i care you and i will keep taking care of you” and look at me now. Thanks funky little scene for ruining my life. I’m glad you liked it i’m aldhjflkjdfkd Hisokaaaaa.....
7) Seventh: I am not commenting on the theory but 👀 that’s so highly specific your friend has a galaxy brain i love it. and i love the idea of “well we have yakuza and supernatural entity what’s an assassin adding himself to it” dLKFJDLKF i know everyone in Mankai calls Izumi out everytime someone joins but that’d be peak. I’m not going further about what December and August and April are all about but i love this plotline sO much, the few mentions of August when Hisoka regained his memories for a minute still haunts me, the guilt he seems to feel and this pain i’m just... godddd such a good set up. I love this plotline.
8) Eigth: EMOTIONS!!  Oh GOD YEAH THE ENDING WITH ALL THE OTHER ACTORS... I cried so hard it’s just. It really shows you it’s not just the culmination of the Winter chapter but of all the act 1 main plot and it really makes you feel how much of a journey you’ve been onto!! A3 is so good at showing you the growth of its characters that especially by the end of Winter you really saw how all of them grew in their respective chapters and how cozy they felt in their new home in the remaining chapters, and the fact this chap has those defining character arc’s lines really drive home “oh my god that was a journey” i love them sO MUCH....
9) Ninth: wE WOOOON!!! They’re all so good i just. i’m gonna cry just thinking about it dlfdjlfk i know like, the game has so many content so you know it can’t end at the end of Winter but the suspense really was there. BUT YEAH LMAO I LOVE SAKYO DOING THAT IMMEDIATLY, man sure has the eyes on the prize and we love him for that.  AND THE GAME NIGHT SCENE they are all sO CUTE and sWEET and they’re a family now and i’m hHHHHH i love a3 a normal healthy amount that isn’t just making me cry thinking about how all of them grew so close even through mixed troupes.
10) Tenth: I am SO happy you were satisfied with the plot so far!! I’m genuinely so happy that you decided to take that journey with us and that you shared all of this with me, and i’m so so happy you liked it!! There is still so much content and all of it is so worth it!
11) Eleventh: Yes!! The flair conversations are all readable on the Mini-Chat tab! So they’re easily accessible and they’re sorted in a way that’s easy to read so you can feel comfortable skipping the flairs if you want until you have seen the stories the flairs are all about. They’re all kinda set during the rehearsals (except for some crosstroupe conversation that wouldn’t make sense if they were like how the Summer Troupe talks with the Spring Troupe in their Flairs DKLFJDF but it’s okay what is a timeline anyway) so some of them are set pre-development and it’s wild to get back to them. I love rereading Flairs i get emotional everytime.
ANND That’s it for this ask! i had a blast reading through your thoughts and i’m so happy and excited!! i’ll send you the drive now so you can start digging through it whenever you feel like it :3c good luck grinding for act 2, meanwhile i hope you’ll have fun with all the act 1 events i compiled for you!!
(side note i need to update the drive too but it’s mostly act 2 content anyway, the only two act 1 things i need to update on it is Sakuya’s birthday card i think?? i think Itaru’s is already in act 2 so i’ll try to get around to it eventually but it’s so far away anyway) (edit: i forgot that the three cards i got for the latest revival are from act 1 DLKJFD okay so i’m missing three cards -)
The drive has backstages and event stories and it may be a lot and overwhelming ahah. Focus on the event stories for the plot and go back to the backstages whenever you feel like it, no need to read them at the same time, unless you want to in which case everything is set up for you :3c and there’s a file with cards that aren’t associated to events too so... lots of goodies hanging around. I’ll send it to you in DM ;O
Take care and thank you so much for all your thoughts! my inbox remains wide opened for any others thoughts you may have as you go further into it :3c

11 questions
tagged by @thevikingwoman. thank you!!
1. The most beautiful place you have been
Ah, a tough one. To me, there is nothing more sublime than the big, wide open empty of the American West. Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons. Utah, and the weird hellscapes of northern Nevada. BUT, on our honeymoon, we went to France: flew into Bergerac and slowly drove north to Paris over the course of several days. The sunflower fields were in full bloom and it was really something else. I also have to say that, while I don’t always love where I live in Orange County, the sunsets in Laguna Beach really are the prettiest sunsets in the whole world.
2. Pick a super power. Why that one?
Not no sleep, but just less sleep. I’d love it if I could subsist on just like four hours a night. I’d get so much more done that way!! Lol.
3. Do you have a comfort movie or show? What is it?
Yes, I have several comfort shows. My most frequented are probably Gilmore Girls, Buffy, and Dawson’s Creek. Right now, on maternity leave, I’m also taking a GREAT deal of comfort in Beat Bobby Flay lol. Idk, I just really like him!!
4. A creation you’re really proud of?
All of my fanfic I’m very proud of. I feel it keeps getting better with every work. I’m very proud of having finished The Dead Season, but I feel like, in terms of writing and storytelling skill, A Funeral feels like my most honed creation so far.
5. Something you are looking forward to in the next year or two?
Well, I just had a baby eight days ago, so I’m looking forward to getting back to normal!!
6. Top 5 video games?
The order here can tend to fluctuate based on where my emotional attachment lies on any given day, but I’ll be as “objective” as possible. Also I have six because the first two I consider to be a tie:
The Last of Us - This is one of my favorite games because it’s so tightly woven, as a story. The characters and their relationships, in combination with the setting and high stakes horrific atmosphere makes it feel both terrifying and desperate in almost EVERY moment. There is ALWAYS something to lose, and Joel’s longterm character development is both very unique and also extremely realistic, nuanced, and heartbreaking.
Red Dead Redemption 2 - This game, for me, succeeds on the strength of its protagonist. The game itself is beautiful, meandering, dynamic, and the story, while sprawling, is multi-faceted and really advanced in its usage of POV, symbolism, and ambiguity. It’s impossible for me to choose between RDR2 and TLoU because they’re such different games. There really is nothing like RDR2, and there is no protagonist like Arthur Morgan, but the narrative of TLoU is just so...perfect. Overall, I think protagonists like Joel and Arthur are sort of paving the way for games that are much more “adult” in scope. These are the first two games I’ve ever really played that feel exclusively BY adults and FOR adults.
Skyrim - I can’t even really qualify my love for this game at this point in my life. It’s like comfort food. It’s like coming home.
Dragon Age: Inquisition - It’s an imperfect game, but it’s big and the characters are wonderful. I get lost in the banter, the background dynamics, the politics, and the wealth of opportunity for OC creation and fan works.
Horizon: Zero Dawn - Aloy is such a unique female protagonist, in that she is almost a Byronic Hero. Female Byronic heroes are really rare, and I think I love her for her secret romance, masked with a hefty layer of sarcasm, bitterness, and self-preservation. I love Aloy’s journey, because it begins with one quest (find the men who attacked the Proving and killed Rost) and then becomes a much more existential quest (Aloy’s discovery of her own origin story). The game itself is good, but I think if a sequel is made, it’s going to be fucking REALLY GOOD.
Bloodbourne - I’ve never actually played Bloodbourne lol but I’ve watched my husband play it twice. It is by far the weirdest game, aesthetically, I’ve ever encountered. The bizarre menstrual symbolism and hidden zones are entirely gnarly and beautiful. And I love the storytelling style of Hidetaka Miyazaki, how it’s all shown, or implied. There are no quest markers, no obvious objectives. Entire worlds can be missed through happenstance, or failing to fully investigate one small mystery to its painstaking conclusion.
7. A recent favorite anything (food/entertainment/clothing/??)
As previously stated, I’m very into Beat Bobby Flay lately lol. Dude, Bobby Flay is entirely 100% the man. He is both calmly confident and entirely accomplished as a chef, but also extremely gracious toward his challengers and always willing to concede the loss (though he usually wins lol). That kind of humble confidence is...rare. He reminds me of that thing Solas says in DAI: “No real god need prove himself.”
8. Favorite board game?
I know it’s old school, but I really love Risk. I like playing with my husband, because he’s VERY good, but I learn a lot from him, and though I have only beat him maybe one time ever lol I usually take him by surprise a few times during the game, and that’s very fun lol.
9. Stealing this one: I know that lots of people have “dinosaur” or “ancient Egypt” interests as a child; what was something that you were super interested in as a child? I’d love to learn a new fact about that subject if you’re willing!
When I was a CHILD, I had a definite elves and fairies phase, as well as a metaphysical time travel/scifi phase. My favorite books, which I would read constantly over and over again were Afternoon of the Elves by Janet Taylor Lisle (which has no *actual* elves in it--the elves are like metaphors, honestly explains a lot about my tendency toward fabulism rather than actual fantasy) and A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle. Looking back, I still see these books and how they manifest in my preferences today. They really blur genre boundaries--between fantasy, science, and domestic realism. They’re about kids having regular kid problems and often experiencing catharsis via “fantasy” worlds.
10. A strange thing you googled recently, if you’re willing to share.
Well, I’ve googled a lot of strange things lately. When you have a new baby, you’re always googling strange things lol. But I’d say, in the past few months, the strangest thing I’ve had to google was basically male and female underwear from the late 1800s. What the fuck does Arthur wear under his pants?? What the fuck is Mary Beth hiding under that skirt?? The most alarming thing I discovered was that women typically wore crotchless drawers around this time. This way they could pee without having to completely remove their myriad of skirts lol
11. You only put ten questions, so I’ll steal a simple one from the previous batch, ie: Five favorite books! I’ve been thinking about some of them lately, so I wanna share:
Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry
The Road by Cormac McCarthy
Tender Morsels by Margo Lanagan
Airships: Stories by Barry Hannah
Cannery Row by John Steinbeck
I’ll tag @buttsonthebeach @morgan-arthur @ladylike-foxes @bearly-tolerable @wrenbee @lyrium-lovesong @ma-sulevin @a-shakespearean-in-paris @hidinginthehinterlands and @idrelle-miocovani
Questions:
Five favorite books?
Five favorite video games?
Favorite visual artist(s) (fan artists and/or traditional)?
Favorite video game protagonist (non-OC) and why?
What’s the best meal you’ve ever eaten?
What’s your dream road trip? Or, if you don’t like road trips, what’s your dream vacation?
Do you like old movies? I’m talking OLD movies, like golden era, from the 1930s-1950s. Why or why not? Do you have a favorite?
What’s something unique and interesting about the place where you live and/or grew up?
If you were going to be transported into the setting of any video game, which would it be and why?
Regardless of where you actually live, would you prefer urban, suburban, small town, or rural living?
What is the most emotional you’ve ever gotten over a video game?

My experience/review watching Pokémon the Movie: I Choose You! in theaters (NO SPOILERS)
Tumblr media
The day has finally come...I WAS LOOKING FOWARD TO THIS ALL WEEK! After it was first announced in December 2016 that the 20th PokĂ©mon movie would be paying homage to Ash’s origins, I GOT SUPER EXCITED! I was always updated with the news surrounding this film, and got excited every time new information came out (despite some negative reaction by some fans). You can tell by searching through my blog archive...so I pre-ordered the tickets by September, and got the earliest showing with the best seats in the house!
Tumblr media
When the day finally came (which was yesterday lol), I got my good ol’ high school buddy to go with me, who was a fan of PokĂ©mon and the anime. Of course, it was a special premiere day, and had to dress for the occasion by wearing my Ash Kalos hat, and the original Team Rocket shirt.
Tumblr media
Now for my thoughts on the movie...is it my favorite out of all PokĂ©mon movies? Nope, but it’s definitely up there! First off let me just say, that THERE ARE SOOOO MANY EASTER EGGS (a.k.a. past anime/movie references) IN THIS MOVIE! When I get the Blu-ray copy for this (hopefully there is one?), I will be going back to multiple scenes pausing so many shots!
Anyway, the movie overall was really awesome and a fun adventure to watch! It was (as advertised) a retelling of Ash’s journey starting out as a PokĂ©mon trainer, and his road to becoming a PokĂ©mon Master. The ultimate goal in this movie was to see Ho-Oh after it left its Rainbow Wing for Ash to pick up. To be honest, I’m not really sure if majority of the movie even takes place in the Kanto region o_O A couple nostalgic scenes were re-done beautifully, and teary :’( Some of those scenes really took me back to my childhood watching the old episodes in my VHS player. It wasn't exactly as portrayed in the canon anime, which makes this alternative universe really interesting to think about Ash’s journey. The most notable thing I would have to say about this movie is Charmander’s development. It’s really surprising how different it is from the disobedient one we knew when it evolved as a Charmeleon. At one point of the movie (I won’t say much), Ash really did something UNCHARACTERISTIC of him that really caught me off guard with his PokĂ©mon and friends. Then again this is an AU, so I shouldn't be surprised if his attitude is not exactly like the character I grew up with. Definitely keep your eyes on it when watching!
One of my favorite parts was definitely towards the climax when Ash was is in this BIZARRE but familiar environment that really didn’t seem to fit when you usually watch PokĂ©mon (you’ll have to see it to find out). Again SO MANY REFERENCES caught my eye during that scene, and it doesn't just apply to PokĂ©mon. But I’m pretty sure what EVERYONE in the theater was shocked about, EVEN ME, was what happened between Ash and Pikachu at the very end of the film...very touching and very cute is all I can say. One final thing I would like to say is THE ENDING + CREDITS SCENE WAS A BLESSING. I WILL NEED TO GIF THOSE WHEN THE DVD COMES OUT (ᗒᗹᗕ)
Tumblr media
As for the characters, the main supporting stars take spotlight! Verity and Sorrel...LOVE THEM! A lot of people might say how rushed their characters were rushed, but it was a 90+ minute movie and they could only do so much. Ash is the main star, and most of the story should revolve around him, so I honestly think both they had enough time to show off who they are, and what their purpose is in the film. Besides both of them being from Sinnoh, Sinnoh Confirmed their backstories...OH MY GOD BRO! I may got spoiled beforehand why Verity was traveling alone with her Piplup (this Piplup really gave me a lot of vibes similar to Dawn’s Piplup), but I DID NOT anticipate one of Sorrel’s flashback scenes which pretty much broke everyone’s heart in the cinema including mine (it’s still sad thinking about it àČ„_àČ„). Both have solid goals, although Verity’s seems to be more of a personal issue she wants to avoid. Also you definitely have to pay attention to Verity’s scenes since her personal issue with a certain someone wasn't directly given to the audience nor even Ash and Sorrel...just pay attention to detail 👀 Oh yeah, and if you’re a shipping type of person (multishippers to be exact), there’s definitely some cute scenes that Verity has with her companions ;) It just makes me wish that Verity and Sorrel can be future canon traveling partners because all three have great chemistry in the movie together as friends, even though if it was just for a short period. Their Ho-Oh adventure/journey is what really made them close.
Although Team Rocket’s involvement was very minimal in the movie, and was really there for comic relief background, it made me happy that they didn’t really interfere with the main storyline of Ash’s quest to find Ho-Oh. Ash and Pikachu developed well without their involvement, and writers probably didn’t want to put too much time giving a battle scene with them. Sure, I wish they could be used better, but better have them there than not at all right? They were still lovable as always with their goofy antics shown throughout the movie.
Tumblr media
Cross, who served to be the big bad rival in the movie, really proved himself to be a real jerk. He is a bit like Paul, only thing is that Cross is more aggressive with his claims. He’s the type of trainer who is a self-centered brat and believes everything should go his way or else he does things by force. He does share a similarity with Ash though, but I’m not saying what it is since it is a spoiler. He served as the Alolan flavor of this movie since he was the only one carrying Gen. VII PokĂ©mon. On the other hand we have the cute but mysterious new PokĂ©mon, Marshadow that actually plays a bigger role in the movie than what you initially thought of. You’d think it’s just there all the time in the background, but you know something is going on as it lurks everywhere throughout the film.
Now there really isn’t that much to say about Bonjī since he only appears at the later part of the movie. I just wish that the old man had more of a backstory and a reason why he was chasing Ho-Oh all his life. Speaking of which, I was happy that the all of the Legendary Beasts get their big screen spotlight along with Ho-Oh. The other thing I wish was that we get to see what really happened with Ho-Oh in the end since the epic final battle of the movie was a bit questionable.
Tumblr media
At the end of the day, me and my friend had such a blast! We even got the promotional TCG card of Ash’s Pikachu (FYI this is a really useful card in competitive play if you play the TCG) We both have A LOT of disagreements when it comes to the PokĂ©mon anime, but both of us really loved and enjoyed the movie. Funny story, there were these 4 girls probably around my age (fangirls to be exact) beside me who were absolutely having a blast watching the movie. They screamed out of joy, shouted when Cross was being an ass, squealed in cute moments, cried in the sad moments, and basically were really into the scenes and characters like singing the PokĂ©mon theme song at the beginning of the movie. Annoying? Yes, but I can’t really blame if they had a good time, and I think that’s the most important thing when you watch things you love with friends to share the moments with (though they probably could have toned it down a bit...I’m sure they were self-aware they were loud). My friend couldn't stand them, but I just tried to distract him with my noise since I didn’t want to ruin the girls’ fun time beside me. Plus I was a bit talkative too in several scenes of the film. Honestly I wanted to shout at the beginning of the movie because I WAS THAT HYPED, but didn’t want to embarrass my friend :p *Shoutout to the girl with the Charmander plush beside me at the AMC Fullerton theater if you’re reading this xD Hope you didn’t get too much tears on your plush from some emotional scenes in the movie (⋟ïčâ‹ž)
Tumblr media
The ultimate question is, should you go see this movie?
ABSOLUTELY! If you’re just a casual fan who doesn’t really keep up with the anime or movies after the original, you probably wouldn’t enjoy this movie that much. But I would say still watch it if you really love PokĂ©mon! I count each movie as its own thing because none of them are really canon with the main series storyline. Movie 20 really stands out on its own because of how different it is from the rest, notably Ash’s journey getting a brand new fresh reboot, and the fact that there really isn’t an antagonist here who is trying to “rule the world” by getting an enormous power or whatever. This movie was a celebration of what the series has accomplished over the past 20 years.
However, this is just my opinion, and everyone has different tastes. All I’m saying is that you’ll only know how you truly feel when you see it! If you ask me, the best review of this movie is YOUR REVIEW. And from what I’m seeing, it really makes me happy to hear most of you guys are seeing it in theaters, and saying how much you enjoyed it. Let's support a great movie with a great dub! If you can’t, you can always wait for the DVD release and support them that way! If you want to watch the original Japanese version with English subtitles, be sure to buy the DVD too! Just support any way you can to show your appreciation and love for the PokĂ©mon franchise.
As for my thoughts on spoilers, I will keep that to myself for the time being probably until a couple of weeks after the DVD release...will probably be making some GIFs or reblogging posts about it since I’m always late to the GIF making game LOL! However if you want to chat about it, feel free to message me OR join my Discord server and chat about it with other people who have seen the movie under the spoiler channel: https://discord.gg/mVSgxbp
Welp that was a long post! I’m pretty sure I have some text/grammar errors here, but whatever I’m tired and I want to get this posted already ¯\_(ツ)_/ÂŻ My next long post will probably be my 2017 PokĂ©Ani highlights...’til then, PEACE

BLACK SAILS REVIEW EPISODE 102 - II
WELL-FORMED THOUGHTS
The conversation between Flint, Eleanor, and Mr. Scott is the most important of the episode, the season, and perhaps even the entire show.  As such, I want to quote it in full!
Eleanor:  Why return at all to Nassau?  With money like that and my father out of business, why not run?  What’s coming our way can’t be outrun. Flint:  But with the money I strip from the Hulk, we could add fifty guns to the fort.  We could build ships to defend our shores and train new men to sail them. We could work the land, grow crops and raise cattle.  Then whoever arrives on our shores first, be it England or Spain, will be in for a most unwelcome surprise.  A nation of thieves.
You have your doubts? Mr. Scott:  Of turning pirates into farmers and soldiers?  Of fighting a war against Whitehall from a sliver in the Atlantic?  Doubt, Captain Flint, does not begin to describe how I am feeling. Flint:  They’re not animals, Mr. Scott.  They’re men starved of hope.  Give that back to them, who’s to say what could happen? Eleanor:  Why do this?  Why here? Flint:  Odysseus, on his journey home to Ithaca, was visited by a ghost.  The ghost tells him that once he reaches his home, once he slays all his enemies and sets his house in order, he must do one last thing before he can rest.  The ghost tells him to pick up an oar and walk inland and keep walking until somebody mistakes that oar for a shovel, for that would be the place that no man had ever been troubled by the sea.  And that’s where he’d find peace.  In the end, that’s all I want.  To walk away from the sea and find some peace.
This is the moment when Flint gets Eleanor on board with his plan for a stronger, securer Nassau.  A Nassau so strong and secure that pirates can settle down and become farmers.  All Flint wants is to be free enough and secure enough that he can leave the sea behind him, and he assumes that everyone else feels the same way.  It will be fun to see whether or not he is correct!
I had a hard time believing that the pirates of these first few episodes weren’t animals and did, in fact, deserve Flint’s vision for them.  After all, in just this episode we see them pissing on corpses, beating prostitutes, and murdering innocent men.  I think we’re meant to have this visceral reaction to the crudeness of the pirates we’ve seen so far, because that is how “civilization” sees them.  It’s only as our story goes along and we get various characters’ backstories that we understand what pain, trauma, and abuse led them to a life of debauchery and cruelty.  A good reminder that first impressions are often only part of the story.
FRAGMENTED THOUGHTS
That’s a lot of nudity.  As I mentioned earlier, it still feels exploitative and cheap.
I would love to know more about the history of Flint and Vane’s rivalry!
I don’t know how to feel about Eleanor’s relationship with Max.  Apparently, she only recently split from Vane, so they can’t have been together long.  And can someone truly be together when one party is paying for the company of the other?  I do believe Max loves Eleanor, but I don’t really believe it’s fully reciprocated.
Silver is seriously so smart, both with his misdirection on the beach and with his memorizing the contents of the page.
Max is also so smart, making the evaluator inspect every single pearl.
Flint:  “I never much liked your father; too caught up in appearances.”  LOL, okay, James.
Silver:  “Do you have a candlestick or
perhaps a heavy shoe? Idelle:  *pulls out sword*
I think that might be our first hint that background prostitutes are also real people with lives and intelligence (and not just Max as the token Special Prostitute).  Also, hello Idelle!  I didn’t realize you were a part of the show since the beginning!
It’s only episode two and we already have lovers being torn apart by their own choices.  Friendly reminder that this show is a tragedy  This is one of my favorite things, though, that relationships are rarely broken because of outside influence or lack of interest, but because of fundamentally different worldviews and goals.  Far more nuanced and interesting!
Honestly, what even is Jack’s hair?
Ninja!Flint makes his first appearance when he goes to the house of a Mysterious Woman and collapses.  He’s so tired!  If I hadn’t already fallen in love with him before, I would now.  Nothing quite reaches my Female Id like a strong man showing weakness.

I saw:
The Lair of the White Worm- LOL!!!!!!!!!!
Ok, I guess I should say more.....
An begginer archeologist (played by a young and absolutely adorable Peter Capaldi) digs up one heck of a big reptile skull. The locals have a tradition of such a beastie, but nobody really believes such things, not even the two women running the rooming house after the mysterious disappearance of theor parents. I say no one, bit an aristocratic woman nearby actually more than believes. Her serpent god was worshipped but those dang pushy christians actually built right on top if the temple, as often happens when religions take over an area. But her god is a real live critter and she herself isn’t exactly human, what with the pop out fangs and venom that spreads the “infection” like a vampire. And now she wants a nice little sacrifice, in the traditional viginal what with gods being so fussy. Can the fang gang be stopped...
Which tells you nothing about the nature of the film that you wouldn’t guess from the horror genre. Actually, the film is a comedy really, and a Ken Russell one at that. If you haven’t seen a Ken Russell film, he tended to go for scenes of hallucinations and/or dreams containing a great deal of imagery based around a collision of religion and sex. For instance, in this film, overcome by venom one of the young women sees a vision of a bunch of nuns being brutally raped by roman soldiers while Jesus on the cross is entwined with a giant snake, there are close ups of the fang lady and the whole background is a wall of flames. Now, by the standards of the director, the film is rather tame with only fleeting bits that go to that deranged extreme, but still some folks might be horrified. Personally I tend to find his extremely overt manifestations of his internal obsessions to be rather amusing. Most people would try to restrain or conceal such things, using subtlety to work it in, but not him! LOL
Anyway, back when the movie came out I remember seeing reviews that were scathing and yet made me curious to see it...which really wasn’t an option back then. I forgot about it. Occasionally I’d be reminded but still only got around to see it now. Maybe the fact I could find nothing shocking is just the fact I’m watching it now instead of at that more innocent age. Whatever, it was really silly fun and I suspect that was the only goal to begin with.
Rocketship X-M- A spaceship sets out to the moon, but an accident occurs. They end up on Mars instead to discover that a race of humans inhabited it. Unfortunately the Martians had invented the atom bomb long ago, so now it’s a post apocalyptic world full of violent primatives. Some of the astronauts are killed in the encounter, but the survivors still have the near impossible journey home to warn the Earth of their possible future if we don’t learn by example.
Not that humanity learns by example very well traditionally do they?
There is an interesting element to this early 1950s movie, beyond the warning about the dangers of the bomb. One of the crew is a woman, and the strange balance between the progressive and the sexist is rather fascinating. She is a scientist critical to the development of the rocket fuel (interesting how they send these important scientists in the first flight!) and she wears clothes that are as practical as the guys. But, on the other hand, there is a bit of needling about her having neglected “womanly” duties in pursuit of her career.
There is also a scene where she and the lead scientist do calculations to figure out how to cope with the emergency and they come up with differing answers. Does he even have them check their answers? No, he says they will use his numbers. She protests, but ends up yeilding and apologizing for insisting. And he forgives her, saying she was just acting like a woman for one! What the??? But guess what? The fix they deploy goes disasterously wrong. So, theoretically, this could be because they didn’t use her figures!! No one brings this up....
Ignore the science of the film, even when it’s as basic as how objects float around but people don’t inside the cabin. It has a socially relevant issue with the comment on the threats of nuclear war, a rare for the era woman as active participant to the science and adventure, a touch of romance, and a tragic ending suggesting the exploration of space is worth the sacrifices. It’s certainly an interesting vintage science fiction film.
I Am Not Your Negro- It’s a documentary that takes the words of writer James Baldwin about race and uses images to illustrate not just the history he is talking about but painful relevance the thoughts still have decades later. Powerful and intelligent, it did remind me how little of his writings I’ve actually read. I need to correct that.
It’s funny how you find yourself reflecting on personal chains of thought when watching something like this, even when you don’t expect it at all. He talks about how in a relationship with a white woman they could not be seen together in public, pretending not to know each other. Meanwhile I remember a guy I was friends with that kept secret a relationship he was having with a mutual friend. Hurt he’d kept it from me, and probably more because I’d secretly fallen for him, I asked him why he hadn’t said anything and he said it was because he thought I’d be upset because she white and he was black. I was devistated because not only had he not realized at all how I felt about him, I realized he knew me so little despite our friendship.
Or the film talks about lynchings and I think about my high school teacher that warned the class about her difficulty with white males because back when she was a girl her favorite cousin was lynched.
Talk about people not being around each other and I remember how one of the best friends I ever had told me when we were in third grade she couldn’t be my friend anymore because I was white and she was black. I wasn’t angry because I knew her parents were upset by our friendship, going so far as to bring a girl they approved of but who bullied me cruelly, to my birthday part. My friend was under a lit of pressure to dump me and hang with the bully, so how could I hate her? As the bully’s gang picked on me my now ex-friend would stand back silently and stare at her feet. She never looked me in the eyes again.
Or how about that moment my heart broke for a friend when she explained that a beautiful woman in a photo was ugly because her natural hair was  “nappy” and  her skin was “too dark”....the same shade as her own.
Or my parents telling me about a black friend of theirs getting beaten up by cops for “walking in the wrong side of the road” back in the 1960s.
Or....
So many memories rippling out, a conversation here, and an expression there.
Thing is, if it can churn up the past to someone like me who isn’t black but just happened to live where I had a lot of friends that were, this movie must be so much more intense for someone that has lived that experience. Excellent film, but possibly not what I should have watched when I’ve been feeling so discouraged about the current America. I am having a difficult time hoping lately in rural southern Trump-land......
