How I draw: Use of references

Second response to a few art questions from @johnny-and-clyde let’s gooo!

I love references! Like most artists I did have that phase where I thought I was better than everyone because I didn’t use ‘em, but lemme tell ya- starting to use references took my art from this

(Art from 2021-2022) To some better lookin stuff, and eventually to the stuff y’all know me for now lol!

Nowadays I do use references for almost every drawing, but the amount that I reference them varies Occasionally it’s pretty direct, like my drawing of Curly Shepard, in which I HEAVILY referenced a photo of myself for the pose and fit:

(I don’t dress like this on a daily basis the pic was taken at a Twilight-themed school dance ok) (I’m not cool enough to wear that many necklaces w/o a good reason 😔)

In drawings where I directly reference photos that don’t belong to me, I put the reference in the post under the drawing, so folks know I didn’t plan the concepts/compositions on my own. But usually I don’t directly reference things…

Usually I use a bunch of different references for a bunch of different things. This is for two purposes:

1- Making sure everything stays vaguely anatomically decent, that the fabric folds in the right places, that the perspective works, that the lighting looks good, etc…especially in tricker/unusual poses. Um I’m also pretty sure that I might have some form of aphantasia, or at least a really weak “mind’s eye”, which is probably why I struggle with composition/planning in art and why I do so much better with references

Like here, when I used this pic of Emilio Estevez’s character in Repo Man to make sure I was getting Mark Jennings’s face shape right- just glanced at it off to the side and (more or less) drew what I saw

Or here, in this pic of Steve Randle- I didn’t know how to even start to draw the angle I needed, so I took a pic of myself and used that

2- Capturing the likeness of a person. For most new characters I draw, I take a bunch of screenshots and roughly redraw them and occasionally trace them to build muscle memory, all while taking little notes about unique features they have. Then, once I have a feel for them, and enough odd-looking line drawings to look like a crazy stalker, I’m ready to start actually drawing post-able art yk?

Here’s an example from 2023 where I studied Nancy Wheeler. Final product ain’t fantastic, but this was two-school-years ago so it’s basically ancient in my book lol

I do still use refs often in the finals, but less directly and with less adherence

But I will say, for rougher/cartoonier drawings I don’t use as many refs. Like, I didn’t use references for these (although I did pose in the mirror to get the arm right in the self-portrait lol) :

Lastly, I also find it’s nice to have a mirror/window nearby to look at my own anatomy and reference that, although that’s mainly just useful for characters who look semi-like me/have similar builds to me lol. Like I can reference myself for drawing Steve Randle or Johnny Cade (at least his face lol), but not so much for drawing like…Dally or Evie or Marcia. Still, it’s useful, especially when I can’t find a specific reference I want, yk?

Anyhow, those are the main ways I utilize references in art! Hope some of this was helpful :))

I'm so happy about the overwhelmingly positive response to my African Ankara Fabrics pattern collection post!

Thank you for all your reblogs, likes, and kind comments. I want to recap a bit and talk about my process and the struggles that led me to this moment. This was such a tough collection to publish, for several reasons. Picking the Patterns I made a lot of different kinds of fabric patterns and felt a bit overwhelmed by the amount and how I would fit all of them into one collection. Then there were designs that I couldn't get happy with and tweaked over and over. Something felt off about them even though they were done right. I finally made the decision to remove them for now and only focus on including patterns I felt good and confident about. Since there are different techniques used to make African fabrics, I decided to split my collection by type. I plan on having a wax print, batik, and mudcloth collection (though I am not making any promises because they will just give me anxiety and guilt for not meeting them). Creating the download overview graphic I had a hard time envisioning an overview graphic for these patterns. I started several attempts but they were not "it". I put off even working on the preview, which led to more anxiety and guilt. Initially, I wanted to post my collection in June, but time ticked relentlessly by. I created even more patterns to distract myself which meant I had to abandon my overview graphic WIP because now I had even more patterns to fit into those frames. Maybe because I thought I had already failed, it got easier to pick up the work in July, but I still had the problem that displaying all the patterns in different directions and sizes just did not look aesthetically pleasing and it was hard to focus and take in the individual designs. While talking about my struggles with my boyfriend, the solution presented itself: I would use only one thumbnail in the preview instead of showing all sizes and orientations. Since I always include the individual preview thumbnails for each pattern in my downloads anyway, I felt this was okay to do. You can still see all the individual designs and it is easier to grasp what designs are included, plus it is less work for me because I was able to reduce three images to one and also only had to puzzle 19 thumbnails into their frames instead of 69! That also made it possible to space out the patterns more to give each of them a bit more individual room to shine. I went with an unusual ultra-realistic design which was a bold move and in my mind would definitely stand out between all the cartoony previews I see a lot these days. I did not exactly plan this design, but it just evolved into that, as my previews often do. I just tweak colors, fonts, and textures until I see something I like.

What do you think about the realistic design and the choice to only display each pattern once?

In-game previews

I know, I have my same-old sims presenting my patterns in the same old way. I do want to spice things up in my in-game previews as well, but I had a choice to make, spend another month or two revamping my game, trying to add new sims, new styles, and all that only to get lost in the process, or JUST RELEASE THIS COLLECTION ALREADY. Also...I actually think YOU can style my patterns better!

overly specific house dog au headcanons? spill some?

It's when I've settled on a "base breed" with dogs that sometimes things just go crazy and go from there

Start with the most overly unnecessarily detailed one here you go:

Adams is the oddest most fantasy mixed breed of ALL fucking time her parents are one Belgian Tervuren and one Borzoi x Ibizan Hound and she appeared so much Tervuren that it’s just possible to miss that she’s got any sighthound(s) in her.

Editing to go even more in-detail with this one because my girl deserves it: She ends up looking somewhere between these two:

She’s very pointy and very leggy but she is very long-furred and that's where the mistakes come from. She moves mostly with the gaits of her sighthound sides which the others find is an easy way to make her bristle. She’s prancing across the room and Chase says you move like a sighthound and she says no I don’t (yes she does)

Park is a Silken Windsprite:

Probably struggles in snow and sometimes has to jump and jump to get through it when it's really deep but Adams mumbles that it’s cute and that's Fight invitation. Park brings up that Adams gets snowballs stuck on her and that it takes hours to melt out of her fur. ("Fuck you!" - "Do it yourself!") It's probably fair to say she has some little dog syndrome.

Chase is an Australian Shepherd. House probably used to make comments about he and Cameron both being Merle:

Cameron is this specific Border Collie (but with blue eyes, ofc):

Probably does the Collie Crouch sometimes. Absolutely does the Collie Stare, and that would come into House's "you can't actually pierce me with your eyes" moments.

Dogs who listen to and seem to understand every word you say and if you're telling someone or another pet off for anything, they assume they're the one you're talking to and give all their guilty looks. Also using my Bluebear as reference with that visual.

Thirteen is this Utonagan!!! No other visual!!! Have such a canine visual of The Dig it's insane.

Wilson of course took Golden Retriever. Definitely one of the larger/silkier ones. Show-type. He'd definitely be a dark gold but this is the best pic I have for how I picture him -color:

Rey (Star Wars Sequels)

Rey is at this stage by some way the character I've spilled the most ink over, specifically a post-TLJ Rey Nobody. I love her curiosity, her loyalty and that core of wounded anger. I want her to be happy and kick baddies in the head.

2. Ikrie (Horizon: Forbidden West)

Shape a woman out of abandonment issues and give her a spear. With so little screentime, she's such a fully-formed character, tough yet vulnerable, flitting between rambunctious and melancholy, and "I never cared about the Werak" cuts me to the bone each time.

3. Shiban Khan (The Horus Heresy)

Broken down and built back up, two or three times over. It's heartbreaking to see how he falls into bitterness over the course of the Heresy, and then glorious to see him rise again and become one of his Legion's greatest heroes.

4. Barristan Selmy (A Song of Ice and Fire)

It's fascinating to watch a character shaking off decades of swallowed doubts, forced to evolve by events. If we ever get The Winds of Winter, I hope his progression continues.

5. Keeve Trennis (Star Wars: The High Republic)

Adorable, great haircut, bold and passionate yet warring with impostor syndrome. Also swears like a Corellian kriffing docker, and she has a neat splitting saberstaff. What's not to love?

6. Theoden (The Lord of the Rings)

It still amazes me upon rewatching The Two Towers that Bernard Hill doesn't just walk off with the whole film, his performance is so magnificent. I don't think there's really anything I can add which hasn't been said already.

7. Caitlyn Kirramen (Arcane)

Lawful good, beginning to realise just how how questionable the good of the law she serves is. Her evolving dynamic with Vi is great, she's tougher than those around her expect and of course, she's so very very pretty.

8. Stephen Maturin (Master and Commander)

A canny spy who is nonetheless perpetually baffled and exasperated by the nautical world he has inveigled himself into. Also a thorough nerd.

9. Mahit Dzmare & Three Seagrass (A Memory Called Empire & A Desolation Called Peace)

Cheating a little in part because I couldn't find a solo pic of Mahit that wasn't AI-generated and also because I love them so very much, your honour. These little bundles of anxiety and constant second-guessing, pitched into events far more massive and momentous than anything either had imagined. And they have moments of intimacy to eat rocks for.

10. Yrica Quell (Star Wars: Alphabet Squadron)

You can fit so much guilt and conflict in this bad girl. Quell has arguably the most fascinating "Imperial defector" arc in all the Star Wars media I've read, as she undergoes this evolving moral struggle across her trilogy.

I was reading ASBH again and I was wondering what steps you do to draw your backgrounds. They're amazing and I struggle with doing them

First of all I'm in shock and awe that someone out there is still reading my ancient unfinished comic, thank you omfg 😭🙌

Honestly I don't love the backgrounds in ASBH! I had a hard time with them. At the time I just wanted to make a comic, not care if it was messy or well written, and just get it out there!! This backfired because it turns out I do care about those things. A lot of the backgrounds took on a super messy and sketchy quality as a result. I still love that rough art style, but I think I'd do "sketchy and messy" differently now.

This is the most detailed background I did for the comic. It started by tracing over a pic I took, but editing some stuff to fit the look of Upper Limbo (which was supposed to be somewhat art nouveau). Here's some wip shots:

For this next one, I thought the photo would help me get the perspective correct. It sort of worked? You can see in the second sketch how I added on buildings that are in a similar position to the photo. (Also enjoy my beautiful sketches lmfao 😂)

I was having trouble remembering the background so for the next page I just traced over my previous drawing 😂 I simply Couldn't Be Bothered to make my line art look like anything other than spaghetti

This one was all from my sketch, no reference, and yet it somehow looks way better than the other ones imo(this was drawn only a few weeks after the first one, it looks like I improved super fast but really I feel like I was just getting on a roll)

Finally we have this page. I don't even think I posted this. But for the backgrounds here I did my favorite lazy techniques of "big textured background" and "background but I blurred it so I don't have to draw details"

I struggle to write up to 500 words a lot of the time, you're here writing novels and I'm inspired-

How do you keep the mental endurance up for so long?

Hi! Hello! ((And thank you :> ))

So I'll be honest, sometimes I struggle to write a lot. I've only recently gotten out of a mental brain fog and I have the ateez concert to thank for that. The massive bursts of inspiration I've had lately are due entirely to that concert because that was an ✨️ experience ✨️. I'm gonna put everything under a read more so the post isn't too long cause sometimes I be yappin lol

The main way I'm able to write longer fics is by establishing a detailed setting. Worldbuilding is one of my favorite parts for longer fics and series. I spend a lot of time early on in the planning period doing research, making sketches, floorplans, and finding inspiration pics for my fictional towns, cities, and worlds.

I also make character profiles for all series to establish their likes, dislikes, strengths and weaknesses, fears, goals, etc. It helps with my worldbuilding. The more detailed a fic, the more details in the character profile!

Another major thing I do is sit down and decide what my main conflict is in the story and how do I want to resolve it? I then write down major plot points and keep a note of all of these in a Google doc. Then I can start outlining around these plot points. Outlining sometimes takes the most time for me because I tend to change my mind sometimes. For chapters, I like to establish a climax for each but nothing that would overshadow the main conflict. I also write above the outline for each scene so I don't stray too far from it but still have room to wiggle. I also tend to let the story do what it wants and add things or change them around a bit as I write. I also implement rough, second, third, and even final drafts for stories.

I also sometimes share what I have done so far with my close friends/mutuals on here to get their opinions and that also helps motivate me to keep going! @yoonguurt @anyamaris and @nebulousbrainsoup see a lot of my sneak peeks or get access to docs to read, give feedback, and help with grammatical errors. I also take a lot of screenshots of some parts and send those to them on discord without any context and when they scream, it motivates me to keep it up lol I like to torture my friends with content about their faves. It fuels me (:<

For some series, I like to make playlists to listen to when working on them. I pick songs I feel embody the characters and plot as well as some that just sound like they fit the vibe. And sometimes one song really gets my brain going and I play it on repeat until I'm sick of it (Halazia has been my saving grace with these Library of Illusion prequels. I put it on and my brain just does the thing. It's like magic).

I also have a plethora of visual content to help me when I'm feeling like I don't know where to go. It's silly but I make a ton of moodboards for stories that never get shared on here because they're just to motivate me.

I also use tools like sprint bots in discord to force me to get something down. I'm competitive by nature so I like to use sprinto which tells you your wpm at the end and if you sprint with others, it ranks you by who has the fastest wpm. Sometimes I get up to 80 wpm with that thing.

I also like to make goals for my wips, in the form of word counts, plot devices, etc and when I reach those goals, I can either close out the fic or set a new goal. Most of my goals are word counts. I take into consideration how long the outline is and pick a reasonable word count that I think I could hit. And sometimes, I don't hit that goal and that's okay because if I finish writing and I'm happy with it, that's all that matters really.

Most of the time, I churn out anywhere from 5 to 10k because I've been doing this for 6 years now. And sometimes I sit down and accidentally write 40k and edit down to 30 because I can't seem to stop yappin lol

I highly enjoy reading stories with intricate plots and lots of worldbuilding so that's what I like to put out ((:

It's not easy for sure and sometimes I do lose inspiration but when that happens, I always change gears and work on something else for a while. I do this often within one story. If a scene I'm working on just isn't flowing, I'll move to another scene. For oneshots, I often write the smut first and then write around it. I never write from start to finish unless it's something under like 5k. I'm always bouncing around from scene to scene lol

And as far as time, I work a job where I'm able to pick my own hours and shifts. I was also sick with covid for half of August so I had a LOT of time to sit at my laptop and just write lol as football season in America picks up, I'll have less time than I did while I was sick lol

There's a few that I'm not counting, as listed in this post here. I wanted to include honorable mentions (1 non Sugo & 1 Sugo) as well. But I can't fit more pics or animations & I don't have much to say about those two. So I'm going to put them in a different post as well.

Anyway, here are my favorites that I have & like. They're not in any order by the way!

First Favorite Non Sugo Unit:

Bitter Refinement/Sweet Dignity

These two are one of the very first Treasure Map event units we ever got in the game, & it's honestly an endearing unit. I remember having this in my team along with the Christmas Cavendish unit that I also got from Treasure Map. I personally loved the theme & aesthetic. The outfit is lovely, especially the addition of the little dragon on the tie.

I was surprised to know that they gave this unit additional abilities later on if you raised his level limit. He was actually one of the very first units to be given additional abilities. Raising it to the max basically had given his special ability the additional effect to heal the team with 15,000 HP.

Speaking of his special, the animation is really cute despite being on the shorter side. Just look at that smile!

Currently, I use him whenever he is a boosted unit for an event or whenever Valentine's Day comes around. Personally, I wish they made a figure of this specific unit holding the plate of sweets he has in the art because I just love it so much!

Second Favorite Non Sugo Unit:

An Unlikely Alliance/Back to Back Fire Fists

I have to admit, the more I look at Stampede Sabo in general, the more fond I am of the outfit he's wearing. But yeah, this is the one Stampede Sabo unit we have in this game & I just love using him whenever I can.

He basically boosts the attack of three character types, & he's yet to get any additional abilities for his level limit as of now. Still, I do enjoy using him on teams I make up for fun & when he's a boosted character in events.

His special animation is pretty short compared to others, but it does look very nice overall.

A part of me kind of wished he was a Sugo Unit. I just think him being voiced would've been nice. But I'm more than fine with him being a Clash Unit (even though I struggled a bit to get him several times to raise his level limit).

Alright, now for the Sugo Units.

First Favorite Sugo Unit:

Brotherly Bond/Fiery Bond/Declaring Battle Against the Gods

Yes, all three of these are technically the same unit, but they're separated in the character log. This is because the first two came out first. We got the super evolution of the unit later on (last year actually). The fact that it also changes the typing of the unit is amusing. It's actually one of several super evolutions to do that.

But if you were to ask me which one of these three is my favorite, it would actually have to be the super evolution.

I absolutely adore this unit so much, even though he's not considered good in the current meta. A lot of people on my friends list there like to use him as friend captain & that makes me happy to see. Pretty sure it either has to do with the fact that their teams are the types he boosts or they like his super type special.

Also, seeing him all angry in the art & the animation just gets my heart feeling a certain way. I just love a man who will do anything for those who are close to him, okay?

Though I will admit that his optional effect isn't too drastic though (I'll post it later).

Second Favorite Sugo Unit:

Reunion with His Little Brother/Flame to Protect His Little Brother

This unit is one of the Anniversary Units. Still a pretty recent unit in the game too as he's only been around for about 8 months or so.

It's safe to say that I have a lot of love for this unit in particular. Though I'll be honest, there's another unit that's tied with this one. But I'll talk about that unit in the next post I do.

Not only is it referencing a moment that honestly makes me cry, it's also a really wonderful unit that I enjoy using as Captain. This especially goes considering that I like using the units he boosts.

He has quite a wonderful animation too! Compared to other animations, this one had a bit more work put into it (& I don't just mean length wise either).

The fact that it's just that sequence of him dealing with the Marines is so funny. It makes me so freaking happy because of how much I loved that moment. It's another reason as to why I like having this unit in my current main team.

By the way, this isn't the only animation this unit has. They also gave him a special animation for when you complete a super tandem with him & a few specific characters!

The thing is that, again, he's an anniversary unit. So he only comes around whenever they have an anniversary or half anniversary banner. But I'm not exactly in a rush to raise his level limit. He's good as is with what I was able to do in terms of boosting his stats up. Just need to raise his potential abilities.

Overall, I love all the Sabo units I have on the game & I can't wait for any future ones they give us!

At long last, I've finally finished a new book! And it's actually not a fanfic this time! This is a bind of Jules Verne's Around the World in Eighty Days. This was supposed to be my fourth book for Binderary, but I didn't finish it in time. Procrastination's a bitch. Fun fact: the first thing I ever bound was a public domain short story called The Machine Stops, but since it was the first it is...not a good skill showcase. This one is so much better. More pics and process talk under the cut!

Close-up of the cover, and a pic of the spine. The blue bits are cardstock, and brown ones are faux leather left over from when I bound Pray for Us, Icarus. The images and author's name are in black embossing ink. Something weird happened with the texture on these--the author's name came out nice and smooth and solid like always, but the stamped images have a bumpy texture to them and some leather visible through the powder. They were done with rubber stamps on an ink pad and the text was done with an embossing pen, so I think it's a difference in the ink. It's a nice texture though, so I don't mind. I had originally thought to put the title on the front, but I really liked both stamps and I like how it came out.

Top view and endpaper. I'm really pleased with how the case fits; that's been something I struggle with on a lot of projects and I think I'm finally getting it down. The endpapers are a floretine print that I bought from Hollander's and cut to size. They got a little wrinkled when I cased in, especially in the back. It's my first time working with this kind of paper and I used too much glue. I also tried stitching them to the text block this time, but I don't think I'll bother with that again. I didn't like how flimsy the single-sheet signature felt next to the thicker ones in the text block. Fun fact for those who've seen an adaptation of this story but not actually read it: there is actually no hot air balloon in the book, even though it's in all the adaptations. There was a movie made in the 1950s which added the balloon and it's been in every version since then.

Title page and chapter header. I've been saying for a while that I wanted to up my title page game, and I really love how this looks. The image here is a free vector pulled from Seekpng.com. It's the same image on both pages, the one on the chapter header is just smaller and in gray instead of black. I've also chosen a name for my bindery, largely because other people had names for theirs and I thought it was cool and wanted my own. It's Paper Snake Press, you can see it at the bottom of the text. I want a logo too but haven't gotten around to making one yet. 2d art is, uh. Still not a strength for me.

The text I used was pulled from Project Gutenberg. Typesetting it was and interesting experience, surprisingly different from typesetting fic. When I do fic I keep the editing very light, just really obvious things like misspelled characters' names and quotation marks that are flipped the wrong way, but it always needs something. This one didn't need any of that, which was nice. It also has way longer sentences and paragraphs than fic, and I thought that might be a product of its age, that writers just wrote longer sentences and were more verbose in 1873 than they are now. But then this week I started working on another fic that has the same features, from someone I've suspected for a while is a published author, so I wonder if it's actually a professional author thing instead of a shift in reading tastes over time. I'm not really going anywhere with this speculation, I just thought it was interesting.

I have two more works-in-progress printed and waiting. One is an author copy and just needs casing in, the other's in a halfway stage and has a lot to be done, so it might be a bit before I have more books to post. But there's a whole stack of things I've typeset that I'm waiting to print, so there are good things coming.

I've made some good progress on my Batuu vest sewing project in the last couple of days since I posted about finishing the Jyn Erso sweatshirt project. Like I mentioned in that post, working on the sweatshirt helped me realize that I needed to add fabric to the front shoulder of the vest rather than removing it. Once I got the shoulder seam sitting where I wanted it, the bust seam fit perfectly and didn't require any adjustments at all, woot.

With that and a few other small changes made to the lining, I went ahead and transferred all the changes to the paper pattern (including actually taping on extra paper to the front shoulder section) and then cut out the exterior fabric out of scraps of that same blue linen I used for the lining/mock-up.

All the work I did on fitting the lining and adjusting the paper pattern made the whole thing come together quickly and easily. I still had to do a slash-and-spread technique to ease the bust panels together, but it was sort of ridiculously easy compared to how much I struggled with that seam with the lining before realizing that the problem was with the markings on the pattern itself.

So now I've got two layers of the vest all sewn together, exterior on the left and interior lining on the right:

When they're layered together, the raw edges are all sandwiched between the exterior and the lining. This linen already has a good amount of body on its own, but layered together it's nearly as rigid as the duck cloth I made my original vest for The Moment out of. Which honestly I'm glad to see, since the torso section will be so fitted once the zipper is in, and actually under a bit of tension.

Last night while I was trying to fall asleep, I realized that any pockets I want to have in this vest need to be put in before I attach the exterior to the lining, so that the stitch lines don't show through. I haven't decided yet if I want to have any pockets visible from the outside (flaps or otherwise), but I knew I definitely wanted to have hidden interior pockets that I can access when the zipper is zipped all the way up (to mid-bust or so). This morning I measured and cut two little square pockets that live in the overbust area of the lining, below my collarbone but above the largest part of the bust -- visible on the right in the pic below where one of the front panels is opened up to show the lining:

I sized both pockets to fit my in-character pilot's license such that the license would stick out just a tiny amount (making it easier to retrieve without digging around in a too-deep pocket). My pilot's license is just slightly bigger than my real-world ID, so the pockets would also work for carrying practical items like ID, credit card, roomkey, etc. The pic below shows the pilot's license on the left and my driver's license on the right, with the lining turned completely inside out so that both pockets can be seen.

The next step, which I'm hoping to get to tonight, will be ironing all the new seams I've sewn in the last few days -- the pockets, the new shoulder panels in the lining, and all the seams in the exterior. While I'm at it, I want to cut out and iron a couple of pocket flap mock-ups so that I can pin the flaps to the outside and see if I like the look, and if so where I want the pockets to be.

The Moment vest has a pair of zipper pockets set on a diagonal, based on the screen-used vest Billy Piper wore in the Doctor Who 50th anniversary episode. Originally my plan for my Batuu outfit was to wear that vest as is, and then I started thinking about covering up the zippers (to follow the No Visible Closures In Star Wars rule) and figured I would just hand-sew some flaps over those zipper pockets.

But now that I'm doing the vest as a completely new scratch-build, I have the option to do whatever I want with the pockets. Pockets are lovely, but I do have the two interior pockets, my brown leather bag, and my belt (potentially with pouches) to help carry stuff around -- and even if I did have pockets on the lower torso of this vest, I probably wouldn't put much in there anyway, since the whole thing is so fitted.

I know for certain that I don't want to do patch pockets that stand away from the body of the vest, like the ones on Han Solo's vest. Side seam pockets are also out, because I think the tension of the fit would pull on those weird. Which leaves various types of welt pockets, with or without a flap, carefully angled so that tension doesn't make them pull and gap.

A lot of the vests in Star Wars have visible pockets, often multiple visible pockets, but those vests also tend to hang open rather than closed and snugly fitted. One exception that I've been looking to for inspiration is Bix Caleen from the Andor show on Disney+. She has a longer coat that's fitted through the torso with princess seams, just like my vest, and while it has pockets they're much lower down, on the hips. She also has something more properly called a vest, worn over a long-sleeved shirt, that is similarly fitted with princess seams -- and again, no visible exterior pockets at all.

The more I look at pictures of Bix, the more I'm leaning away from doing any sort of external pocket at all, and just stick with the two small internal pockets. I might need to do some top stitching along the seams to give it some visual texture (another thing that Bix's coat and vest both have), but that could be a good way to secure the lining to the exterior, too. Hmm. Definitely something I'll have to think on.

Making the cat bag: post-game analysis

My thoughts on the project, what I’d change if I made it again and what I wouldn’t.

Leather -- For all that I struggled with making the gussets out of latigo, I'd still choose that over veg-tan. I like the heft of latigo; I like that it's sturdy enough to hold its shape, while still staying flexible. Veg-tan gets very stiff after it's been wet (ie, when you dye it), and then it's a lot of work to soften it back up again so it doesn't wrinkle and crack when you bend it. The molded veg-tan bags and pouches I've made in the past feel less substantial than latigo, less durable, less professional. In my opinion, latigo is worth the extra hassle of the gussets.

(I do wish it were possible to mix and match different leathers -- to do the body and straps with latigo, and the gussets with veg tan -- and if they were getting dyed black that might be possible, but not if you're trying to make them match with literally any other color.)

Latigo does tend have a very flat, unnaturally-even color that is also a giveaway that you’re working with modern leather, so it benefits from layering on some other color. In this case, I used Eco-Flo antiqueing gel in mahogany to stain the edges, and then smeared it around on the leather’s surface to give it some depth and complexity. I like how it came out, and I’d do the exact same thing next time.

Buckle vs magnet -- lol yeeeeeah, if I make this again, I'm going to give it the hidden magnet clasp. Not only does the buckle make access more difficult, but that constant buckling and unbuckling puts a lot of wear and tear on the strap very quickly.

Belt straps -- Perfect, 10/10, no notes. They were designed to be able to fit belts up to 2.25″ wide, and when I wore the bag around for a day, they folded nicely, allowing me to sit down without the bag getting in the way.

Proportions -- This is the biggest one, because the bag came out noticeably more square than the reference pics. I had wanted it to be 6″ tall, and accordingly I made the front/back/gussets 6″, but I didn’t sufficiently account for how the curve of the flap adds height.

You can see that the front/back/gussets are indeed 6″ tall -- but with the flap, the overall height is nearly 6.75″. So even though repatterning is a pain in the ass, I would drop the sides to 5.25″, and hopefully that would make it 6″ overall.

I’d also widen it at the base, from 7.5″ to 8″ across, because the bag is not currently a very useful size -- with the amount of space the gussets take up on the inside, it's neither wide enough nor tall enough to fit my lawyer's 6.5" cellphone, and I make a point of considering the functionality when I make stuff like this. Phone and wallet is what most people need to carry at cons/renfaires, and so a pouch that can't accommodate those needs isn't going to be terribly useful. The bag is plenty roomy, but in the wrong directions -- it's deeper and taller than it needs to be, but not wide enough.

It also doesn’t need to be 2″ deep. The wooden mold I have (which is actually 1.75″, not 1.5″ as previously stated) is what I’ve used for making the Anders square bag and the Fenris bags, and it is exactly the right thickness for carrying a smartphone and a wallet side-by-side. It’d work fine for the cat bag too.

I think next time I'd try to skive down the thickness of the gussets to make them easier to work with, even though skiving is a fiddly, error-prone pain in the ass if you don't have the machine to do it. Thinner leather would be able to press into the mold better, and ultimately take up less space inside the bag.

So, am I going to make this again? 

idk, maybe. I’d give a 50/50 chance, knowing me. I can feel the perfectionist urge to get it completely right this time, and then I could put the pattern/tutorial up for sale. We’ll see. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

No, I'm no longer struggling to figure out any sort of path in life while trying to make enough money to move out of my parents' house.

No, even the internet isn't close to being the same as it was then.

Also, all those struggles lead to me finding my wife while figuring out how to live on my own for the first time.

Also, there's still a place for the fandom stuff on the internet and I love figuring out the best ways to share my own love for it.

So, I guess this is a long, convoluted way of saying that I am still the person I was 10, 15, 20 years ago, even with all the changes in that time- and that's something I'm proud of. I keep trying to find the best ways to keep my hobbies and passions alive, and even when I can't quite do it, I know I'm putting my best self forward.

You appear to be a Twitter refugee, if I’m understanding your 'I make money on Twitter’ statement correctly (which I may not have properly understood), who seems to be struggling because you have not yet adapted to the local culture and are, as a result, completely misreading the room.  It happens and is not something to be ashamed of, but it is also NOT the culture you’re new in’s problem.  It’s a you thing.  When I was moved by my family with them to South Korea during my childhood, I had the same problem for a good long while. I learned and adapted over time.  I believe you can do the same.  You’re a fucking artist.  OF COURSE YOU CAN.  YOU ARE BRILLIANT.

HELPFUL QUESTIONS TO SUPPORT YOU BUILDING YOUR FRIEND GROUPS HERE AND ALSO YOUR BUSINESS NETWORK (THEY MAY OR MAY NOT BE THE SAME THING) -

1.  Have I made sure my profile picture IS a profile picture I put effort into and not one of the default Tumblr ones?  Having a default Tumblr profile pic screams I AM NOT A HUMAN, and NOBODY will buy shit from what they think is a bot.

2.  Have I made sure I reblog things that I like (especially my and other artists’ art)?  Have I commented and added on every post I have enjoyed?  Tumblr is a team sport where there is no ‘enemy’ and it all becomes jokey art.  Even the just talking posts.  Even the instructive posts.  We have a Science Side.  We have a History Side.  We have experts on shit, who really, really are EXPERTS, who won’t tell you their names since they’d love to get tenure but if you read in their disciplines, you know who you’re talking to.  (NO WORRIES REPUTABLE ACADEMICS I AM NOT GONNA OUT YOU!)  Not reblogging, commenting, etc means you’re not participating.  Nobody willingly spends time with people just leeching off of them, let alone buys anything from them.  We care about each other here.  It will help if you cultivate that, as well.  We are not mere ATMs.  Nor are you.  We are in your same boat, for the most part.

3.  If you have fixed items 1 and 2, if they needed fixed, now you move to the real way you find your people: 3a.  What fandoms do you suspect might most vibe with your work?  Go find out.  Share your art.  What is the response?  Is this a spot to consistently share your work (with prices listed in case anybody is interested in having it on their wall or side table)?  

EXAMPLES of 3a - 3ai.  Do you draw Dean Winchester’s car model and year in various situations?  SPN WANTS THEIR CAR BACK, BABY.  and you can give it to them. 

3aii.  Do you do lots of abstract stuff?  Make bizarro world fantasy thingies?  You may walk into UNREALITY, ABSTRACT, FANTASY tags and find your people.

3aiii.  Does your art fit mostly into one or a few different aesthetic styles?  We have whole aesthetics fandoms here.  Do you do sweet pastoral landscapes? GET THEE TO THE COTTAGECORE TAG! 

3aiv.  Do you like drawing giant monsters, original or otherwise?  JAPANESE KAIJU, GODZILLA, etc tags are calling your name. 

4.  PROMOTE YOUR FELLOW ARTISTS.  It is proof you aren’t just out to cover you own ass.

About this panel. In my previous post, I wrote Medusa, but I actually meant Mario, the one with the earring to the right, and not the person who was sitting next to GSM. Because, as you can see, he addressed Mario and not Medusa. Sorry for mixing up the names.

Another thing I wanted to mention in my last post was again, something about Vasily.

Okay, I stopped analysing at episode eight, which means I will describe episode nine. In episode nine, it starts with the weigh-ins, where Ethan weighs 179 pounds= ca. 81 kg and Elijah weighs 186 pounds= ca. 84 kg. Also, as Uncle/Coach Trevor was about to scold Elijah lightly on his weight, Kublai made some comment about it being because of those energy drinks, but Elijah quickly shushes him, and still, Elijah gets an earful from Coach Trevor. ALSO WHY DOES ELIJAH HAVE TO HAVE HIS SWEET CUTIE-PATOOTIE SMILE, LOOK AT HIM LAUGH, LOOK AT THE SWEET PLASTER ON HIS NOSE (JOCK VIBES) LOOK AT THE ABS BRO. Nah I'm down bad bad. Then there's the SNITCH Kublai, like bro I thought you were the type of person I could hide a body with??? Not cool man...

Then we have scary/angry Trevor-

And then we have JJ just making such a remark-

And Ethan and Elijah just look at him like-

Like, Ethan and Elijah were probably like 'What did he sayyyy???' And JJ just sweats. bruh. And that shirt he's wearing is ugly too. Going on to the next few panels, we have Ethan's coach telling him that he'll make the easiest 40k in his life, but spoiler alert, he gets folded like an omelet.

Going forward, Ethan's a sneaky bastard who does dirty tricks.

Like bro, stop doing thattttt

but then, a few panels and fighting later, Ethan just fucking picks Elijah up.

Ethan's face tells me that he's a little struggling, but other than that, nice cake Elijah.

And then, as they are fighting some more, Ethan just kinda holds Elijah down to the ground, as in slamming him on the ground over and over again, and Elijah manages to put Ethan in a triangle hold.

Like---scooch over Ethan!

Like c'mon, who wouldn't want to get smushed between Elijah's thighs?! Like I'd die happy between 'em...

Ahem, going forward, Ethan just fucking raises Elijah in the air again, like what the heck are you Ethan? I though you were a cheetah!

But, Ethan just slamms Elijah to the ground again, and does another dirty trick. above Elijah's left purple eye, there is a wound. And what does Ethan do?? He presses on it.

Out wonderful Uncle Trevor yells at the Ref to do something, who tells Ethan to cut it out. I would've punched the Ref if I were there. Does Ethan listen though? No, he doesn't. He presses on a little more and then covers Elijah's nose to stop it from breathing.

In episode ten, we can see Ethan talking about his past, where his father died and he was alone with his mom, who also wasn't very happy, I mean, she drinks the whole time, and when Ethan started fighting, she dedicated her life to his wins, even when he cheated.

As Elijah and Ethan exchange punches, GSM/Alpha male raises his voice

Is Vasily turning his head to not get slapped? Anyways, I feel pity for Medusa, who slowly looses it with GSM. Also it is now confirmed that GSM is a hypocrite.

Looking forward, we can see Daimyo(Izo Honda) saying Elijah won't win, and Bokassa saying that he will, but only because the horn is never wrong.

And then, Ethan says something along the lines of hoping that Elijah enjoyed the present he and Zach left for Elijah. And he was talking about the photo.

Then, we get some panels which show Ethan, Bokassa, Jamie and Zach outside, where Ethan asks about Bokassa's horn. As Bokassa tells them the story behind it, Ethan and Zach laugh at him, and Jamie tries his best not to laugh as well.

Bokassa then asks if Ethan would like to know if he or Elijah is going to win, and Ethan agrees, not really believeing him.

Anyways, let's admire Bokassa's beauty.

Pretty Bokassa.

Look at him, so pretty, don't you think?

Also, Bokassa says that the horn tells him that Ethan's going to lose. After that, Ethan and Zach go to Elijah's room and mess up his stuff, and Ethan notices that photo of Elijah with his father, and, well, he tore it in half probably.

Elijah then realizes that it was Ethan and not Zach and and punches him, then raises him up the air. Ethan then punches Elijah after the fight was over, and the ref scolds him again.

As Ethan then sits in the corner to rest a bit, he feels Kublai's stare and-

WHY DO YOU HAVE TO STAND LIKE THAT, KUBLAI!?!?! WHYYY
