Part 1

In continuation to my Hook AU, I’ll be skimming over Clay and Viva’s situation and share a few ideas on how Clay would react to the news:

In the escape from Bergen Town, Poppy is like a year old and Branch is a bit older than her, he’s almost 3 (mostly because I don’t know what Poppy’s age is)

Brozone and Grandma Rosiepuff are still alive and are present for the escape

Their parents had died right before Branch’s first birthday

Viva and some of the other trolls are still separated in the tunnels

Suffering from this loss, King Peppy encourages Brozone to start a concert again as they are the last band with all members present, in hopes to boost troll morale

Due to this pressure, John Dory pushes all of his brothers to be at their very best, which causes a strain for his brothers, especially Clay who is grieving Viva

King Peppy is the one who tells John Dory about the perfect family harmony, which only causes more pressure for the brothers once JD ends up promising other trolls they’d pull it off

They spilt up like in canon, leaving Branch with their Grandma as they are now safe from the Bergens and have no reason to worry

On Clay’s journey, which takes a few months, he stumbles upon the Putt Putt Trolls and Viva, who had believed they were the only survivors

Assuring Viva that they had successfully relocated, he is able to coax some of the trolls to go with him to prove it’s safe

However, when they go back, the new village is deserted, and Clay’s brothers and Grandma are nowhere to be found

Clay then goes back with the Putt Putt trolls and helps Viva as a co-leader, growing up to wonder if his older siblings had survived or not

The overall idea of this is that Branch and Rosiepuff had been left behind because the brothers genuinely didn’t think they’d be in danger now that the trolls were away from the Bergens

As for why the new tree had been deserted, Rosiepuff is taken by Chef, which a few trolls had ended up witnessing, and once King Peppy hears of this, he has his people move further into the forest as he is not willing to lose any more trolls

Branch, now grey and an outcast, goes with them as he does not wish to let Rosiepuff’s sacrifice be in vain, hence why is obsessed with building the bunker, to be safe and alive

My ideas with how Clay reacts to the news of JD’s death and his newly 17-year old son who had been raised by the Rock Trolls

He’s angry that JD died, that he hadn’t gone through with the idea of looking for him at the Neverglade Forest like he had planned to when he came back from the deserted village

He’s resentful that he would never be able to yell at JD for the role he pushed him in, that he’ll never be able to find out if JD would’ve apologized, if he’d accept the troll he had become

He’s wary and uncertain towards Hook, JD’s son, because he looks so much like his father and he acts like him sometimes, that anger boils inside of him

However, Hook is the last remnant of JD and his nephew, so he tries his best to bond with him and pretend everything is okay

Whenever Hook asks Clay about JD, he either refuses to say anything or has him ask Bruce or Floyd

Clay also tries to be friendly with the Rock Trolls, though their interactions are awkward once he finds out about Queen Barb and the strings

Clay’s role may change as I am still in the drafts with deciding how Hook’s relationship would be with the brothers and how that affects the events from the third movie. Heck, I’m still debating whether it should be Hook who gets captured, just so Brozone finds out they have to save the son of their dead brother and a bigger risk of the Family Harmony not working.

Next part will be more about Hook :)

What's the point of the coffins?

Something I've been thinking about recently are the coffins. Susie, Norman, Bertrum, Grant, and Lacie all get coffins- but why?

Let's start with Susie. Out of all the human characters we meet, her story is one of the most developed. She grew attached to her role as Alice's voice actress, and, after being replaced, was devastated. Joey took advantage of this, and made a deal with her. We don't learn the details, but in Chapter 3 Alice sometimes refers to herself as Susie, and we get a coffin with her name on it. It's easy to assume that she was killed to bring Alice Angel to life, but considering what we know now about how ink creatures are formed, that seems odd. If the Ink Machine can create cartoons without the use of souls/bodies (like Allison Pendle becoming Alice, Thomas Connor becoming Tom Boris, etc) what's the point of Susie's death?

Norman is another odd one. We don't know much about his past, but he knows so much about the studio. He knows about the Ink Machine and almost everything else. He dies at the end of DCTL, but we don't know exactly how. Joey also says that the ritual didn't work because "the ink had infected them for days." I'm not sure if he's referring to Dave and Norman, or other people Sammy lured. Either way, we don't know how he gets turned into the Projectionist. There's a lot of missing pieces here. Plus, with the books no longer being canon, we don't know for sure if this is how he died.

Bertrum becomes even more strange with context. We learn that he's famous, so why would anybody (Joey, Gent, or otherwise) risk killing him? There was a dispute over the ownership and the formation of Bendyland, but I'm still not sure that would warrant murder. His audio log suggests that Bertrum willingly turned himself into an octopus ride to haunt Joey, but even ignoring how that was possible, it begs the question of what happened to his body.

Also, the Ink Machine's purpose was to make living cartoons. Even if Bertrum's transformation was deliberate, what about the Projectionist? Was his transformation deliberate-- if so, who the hell came up with that? You could make the case that he was supposed to become the Cameraman from the comics, but that feels unlikely. The whole transformation thing is very unclear.

Grant's case is especially frustrating. He's important, even for a side character. We get several mentions of him in the books. He gets two tapes (one in BATIM, talking about something big Joey's planning, and another in BATDR, talking about Gent and Mr. Grey). Joey's tape in the Administration Department denying financial difficulty feels extremely directed at Grant as well, even if it doesn't name him specifically. But that's not all; Kay Lee says he hid some of Joey's more priceless assets, so even if he didn't know exactly what was going on, he was close enough to Joey to be useful.

But the most frustrating part of all of this is that we don't know what happened to him; we only know that something happened. His secretary mentions how he's constantly getting sick. Thomas calls him mangy, so he wasn't looking good at the end. His office is a mess and his last audio log is of something happening to him. The two popular theories are he was attacked, or he violently transformed. Grant even gets a coffin in the Music Department. He's as close as we get to a confirmed death.

But that's... it. That's all we get.

If he was attacked, we never learn what attacked him; if he transformed, we never see what he transformed into. Considering how bad the financial situation at JDS was, you'd think we would hear more of him, but we don't. He just... disappears.

And then there's Lacie. Out of all the Bendy cast, she was the last person I'd expect to get a named coffin. She has one tape in Chapter 4 talking about an animatronic, and that's it. Nothing really becomes of the animatronic, and (as far as I can tell) that's all we get of her. Once again, if she became an ink creature, we never see it. She's a one-off character, given importance for some reason we never hear about.

But it doesn't end there.

As we all know, there's the real world, and then there's the ink world. So are the coffins even real? Did these characters actually die? The books tell us they did, but now that the books are no longer canon, that doesn't mean much. Did they die outside of the ink world, and their coffins were added in retroactively? Circling back to Susie's case- could this mean she didn't die at all?

As much as I love the Bendy franchise, once I actually start thinking about its lore and story I get frustrated. It doesn't seem like the devs had a solid story at any point before they started writing. Characters and plot lines change, and there's not enough solid, consistent evidence to really support a lot of theories. If I had to guess, there was a significant lore rewrite between BATIM and BATDR, with the books trying to make sense of it. I would even wager that the lore got rewritten between BATIM Chapter 4 and 5- because, let's be honest, the whole "time loop pocket dimension" thing came totally out of left field.

I hope the next games (or books, or whatever installments we get next) actually take the time to address this.

Veronica has a very rocky relationship with her mother so naturally Mother's Day is not typically a good day for her and she usually prefers to spend it inside because going out tends to make her resentful. Her mother and her butted heads a lot and Veronica doesn't even open any mail she gets from her anymore , and typically lets it pile up on her coffee table until it becomes a problem she needs to toss it. Veronica gets the want / urge to call or respond every now and then but she knows it'd just lead to another fight, somehow.
