Hello!! I hope this isn’t an odd/rude question to ask but it’s been on my mind a lot.
And forgive me if any of my assumptions about these characters are incorrect or if I’m just missing something, my media literacy isn’t always awesome hahaha
So anyways, we all know Rosier and Asmodeus’s relationship is pretty unhealthy, but if I’m remembering right I feel like I’ve seen some descriptions of their relationship that imply that they’re Both bad for each other.
Maybe I just wooby-ify Rosier too much because I love him lol, but I honestly have a bit of a hard time not seeing Asmodeus as the sole aggressor/one in the wrong regarding their relationship issues, and mostly only seeing Rosier as a victim of Asmodeus’s assault.
Perhaps Rosier’s wrongdoing just comes from his desire to stay with Asmodeus despite the pain and trauma it left him with? I’m not sure, but I was just wondering if there was something I may have missed that Rosier had done/currently does that would also hurt Asmodeus too?
I mean obviously other than cutting his head off but that was in self defense so I don’t count that haha. But then again, maybe that is what Rosier did wrong? I’m not sure lol
Hi! Not a rude question at all! I really like talking about Rosier (that's why he's getting his whole own novella (in case you didn't know, since I've only discussed this on my newsletter).
Rosier doesn't have... any wrongdoing, so to speak. In terms of his relationship with Asmodeus, he definitely hasn't done anything wrong. Asmo and Rosier are not a case of "they're both bad people so it's fine that they're toxic" (like Lucifer and Baal, for example, or even Lucifer and Michael in A&M). Rosier is a victim and there's not a lot of nuance about it. He was hurt and it wasn't his fault.
I'm not sure if you mean something I've said when you say "descriptions" but if you do, let me explain what I mean when I say that Rosier isn't that "good" of a person. (This isn't going to be "Rosier is toxic and evil too, and he's evil to Asmodeus" because he's not. He has (toxic) codependency issues with Asmodeus, but that doesn't make him evil. I mean, we can understand that as a result of the trauma of losing, you know, God.)
So to make it very clear, let me tell you about demon Rosier without bringing Asmodeus into the equation about Rosier's morality:
Rosier knows what Lucifer is up to all the time. He knows a lot of the awful things Lucifer is responsible for. Rosier might be out of place with the demons, but he's kind to them (see: Baal). He will clean up the blood of innocent people if Lucifer asked him to. He would do it if Baal asked him to. (Even if he's sad about it, he'd still do it). If Baal needed someone to comfort him after a mass murder, Rosier would hold him. If any horrible demon needed a shoulder to cry on, Rosier would offer his.
Rosier is a very kind person. He's actually what happens when you're too kind. He makes excuses and he allows bad people around him to do whatever they want. He's almost a complete bystander. He's not as trapped as he thinks himself to be. And (this is important in his novella) being a "good person" is about more than just smiling at people, it's about not letting bad things happen to innocent people. (Sometimes we read about horrible people irl and we're shocked by the family/friends around the perpetuators that just let them get away from it. We like to imagine they agreed with it, but the truth is that they probably just kept making excuses. They downplayed it because they loved them. (I used to know the son of a very bad man (a guy with a wiki page, so yeah it was bad), and though the man is locked up for life, the son loved his father. He loved him so much he just refused to think about the people his dad hurt. Does this make the son a bad person? Who knows, but it definitely puts his morality into question. I mean, are you really willing to forgive the worst crimes imaginable against innocent people just because you love someone or think that you do?))
This is also why demons can be annoyed with Rosier for acting so angelic. They think that Rosier is just as bad as everyone else just by virtue of never doing anything about the bad things. They think he just wants to feel better about himself.
So returning back to Asmo, yeah Rosier is not the aggressor here. Not even a little. Rosier's imperfect goodness exists even though he's a victim. (I feel like I say this a lot in relation to characters in the series but yeah — you can be a victim and do things of dubious morality). His imperfect goodness exists independent of Asmodeus (Lucifer, Baal, for example) but exists within the context of his love for Asmodeus, as well. Not that Asmodeus is hurt by it. Asmodeus is mostly hurt by his own actions and his own thoughts. If you asked Asmo, I think he would tell you that Rosier's never done anything wrong to him.
Anyway! This is really long! but Rosier's morality is very fun for me to talk about because of how complex it is. There's a line in his novella about how there are 2 kinds of demons: those that kill and those who knowingly welcome the killers home. And Rosier realizes that despite how kind and good he wants to be, despite his intent, he's become the latter.
In essence,

tbh i wish it was better understood how specific mobility aids are in their uses and how even if it seems like someone is a perfect candidate for using one, it may be totally incompatible with their disability and even actively make it worse. if you see someone limping around painfully, sure it’s POSSIBLE that they need a cane or walker or wheelchair and they just can’t afford/access one. but it’s just as likely that those things simply aren’t compatible with their needs (in general or at the moment). maybe it doesn’t matter if they take weight off their bad leg or not. maybe sitting is more uncomfortable than being upright. maybe the shift in balance and posture to lean on a cane hurts more than just shuffling along or will cause worse problems over time or just straight up doesn’t help. it’s also often the case that regular movement is necessary to keep limbs mobile/strong and reduce pain, so sitting or leaning are the worse options. idk. i just think a lot of people including me who have issues with walking and standing can get this feeling of “but if i was really disabled, a mobility aid would help me”. and a lot of able bodied people will recommend a mobility aid the minute you have trouble walking thinking it’s the automatic solution when that’s just not true because it’s such a case by case situation. yknow. never make assumptions about why someone uses or doesn’t use a mobility aid and don’t assume they’re always the solution to a walking problem. and don’t trick yourself into downplaying your disability (and therefore your needs) just because a very specific solution doesn’t match your very specific problem

How do you stay hopeful for Caryl after all these years? I definitely shipped it & while I like the characters it just feels like AMC is too cowardly to make it happen.
As an aside, how do you also deal with all the noise of the fandom? Not just anti-Caryl people but people who grow so protective of the ship that they throw other actors’ stories and work under the bus. The racism I’ve seen directed at Danai & the downplaying of her talent or her chemistry with Andy has soured me to so much of the fandom as a black woman.
Sorry, if it feels like I’m dumping randomly. I’m new(ish) to the fandom & what I’ve seen is almost enough to make me want to run away. I really enjoyed the main show (for a time), loved TOWL & I’m excited to see Carol back and to see how DD continues. Carol really grew on me & scared me a lot along the ways, just like Rick did. I think the two of them experience the greatest changes in the show. It just feels like the excitement is constantly at war with not wanting to interact with what sometimes feels like a hateful fandom across the board.
AMC isn’t the biggest hurdle. Almost all of the EPs on Caryl’s show are white men with the same limited perspective and that was the case on the flagship show for a number of years as well. I trusted the writing for S9 and S10 and I know there’s a real possibility of a pro-Caryl showrunner joining the spinoff, so that’s the hope I’m hanging onto. I can’t embrace the “just friends” narrative because it undermines the writing, the actors’ POV’s, and a large number of fans’ POV’s. It’s not a creative choice, you know? It’s rooted in misogyny and ageism and hate, which doesn’t sit well with me. Either they deliver the payoff that’s long overdue in TBOC or I can’t keep watching. That’s where I’m at unfortunately 😔
I’m sorry your experience in fandom has been so volatile. It isn’t okay for anyone to stoop to racism in order to win an arbitrary competition. That’s the underlying issue with TWD fandom. Andy, Norman, and JDM never have to “earn their place" on the show. They’re all leads, right? But Danai, Melissa, and LC—the women/woc—are constantly being pitted against each other. Why? I can go deeper into this later, but I’ll say now as a general observation that I think fans of these actresses and the characters they play speak from places of pain, albeit very different places, and some of them think they have to tear down, silence, and invalidate others in order to feel seen, heard, and validated themselves. They’re mistaken. I wish more fans could celebrate the women’s individual strengths without ranking them and without trying to justify racism or ageism or misogyny in order to position them as "less than," but more than that, I wish AMC/TWDU would encourage healthy interactions between fans of different talent/characters. They don’t. Michonne’s, Carol’s, and Maggie’s relationships with each other should have been developed and celebrated a lot more on the show. Seeing them root for each other would’ve encouraged their fans to do the same. The social media accounts promoting them as equals would allow their fans to view them that way and treat other fans as their equals as well. Danai, Melissa, and LC should also have more power/opportunities on their shows because more representation for women/woc behind the scenes means more impactful stories for women/woc onscreen that will resonate with more viewers.
You asked how I deal with the noise. It depends on the circumstances. If the official accounts do something problematic, which has been happening a lot lately, I’ll say my piece where they can see it in the hope that it leads to more thoughtful engagement with/thorough research of their audience(s). Otherwise, I have to put up safeguards because, as a human, I get overwhelmed if I’m surrounded by too many things I find hurtful. I don’t bother answering hostile anons because the arguments will just keep going in circles, I’ve changed my settings so that hateful voices can’t spam my comments, and I block fans who try to bully me. Those are just some examples. If you’re new(ish) to fandom and want to test the waters, Tumblr is probably a safer place to start than Twitter. Hopefully you can connect with other fans who respect your POV and vice versa. When the hate gets too loud, it really helps to have fandom friends to talk to about it.

On Salem’s Emotionality.
Or, the effect of being grimm on her psyche; see also this post discussing how grimm perceive the world, and this one for more on the nature of the grimm themselves.
Now, an ordinary individual grimm cannot feel anything at all, except for pain. If isolated from a horde, whether because it was ‘born’ alone and hasn’t yet integrated into an existing horde structure or through capture, a lone grimm will be inundated by a never-ending onslaught of sensory information—it exists in a perpetual state of agonizing overstimulation.
So a solitary grimm—not one who is traveling across its horde’s territory by itself, but one with no horde at all, or one captured and removed from its territory—is a terrible danger to everything and everyone it encounters, aside from other grimm. It is in pain, while lacking any ability to think or understand what it is experiencing, and everything in the world keeps hurting it.
Within a grimm horde, all of this information is distributed and channeled across the entire territory, and rational understanding emerges. The pain ends. Individual grimm in a horde still do not think or feel anything, but rather act as sensory nodes for the whole horde; what may appear to human eyes to be a single grimm reacting emotionally—say, becoming violently enraged—is in fact more akin to the horde articulating its mild irritation. (If a horde is truly enraged, it will swarm in overwhelming numbers.)
In encounters with humans or faunus, grimm will therefore generally mirror the energy they’re given. Attack, and the horde will strike back; remain calm and slowly retreat, and the grimm may bristle but the horde will likely choose to keep their distance. Someone who makes it a habit to avoid conflict with the grimm will be remembered and eventually marked as safe, and such people may even approach grimm without coming to harm as long as they do so in a non-threatening manner.
For Salem, all of this mostly has the effect of magnifying whatever she feels.
What makes Salem unusual from a grimm perspective is that she is not just recording information (as all grimm do) but also constantly creating new information—her individual thoughts, her feelings, her vision and hearing and everything else she experiences through her human senses; all of this streams into the horde alongside her ordinary grimm perception…
…and then the horde processes it…
…and Salem experiences the horde’s reaction as an inseparable facet of her own feelings because the horde is, for all intents and purposes, an extension of her mind. If she feels scared, for example, the horde perceives an imminent danger to itself and Salem has to manage not only the human reaction to fear but also the collective threat response of the hundreds of thousands of other grimm comprising her horde.
This isn’t always a strictly a negative—together with her semblance, the spatially-distributed nature of grimm cognition allows Salem to do things like remove a problem from her conscious mind and send it elsewhere for consideration by the horde, for example, which is how she thinks her way through a lot of her research—but it does make her emotions very intense, and her internal experience is of a constant struggle to manage her feelings.
(From the outside, this is not at all apparent: Salem has always had a rather blunted affect, and these days her idea of ‘managing’ her emotions in practice amounts to hiding and downplaying them. She can appear to be utterly emotionless only to erupt seemingly out of nowhere, because she is quite good at keeping the mask in place until the very moment it shatters. Her tone gives away more than her expression or body language, and when she’s upset, her stutter—which she tries viciously to suppress—is usually the first crack to appear in her façade.)
Salem also—for a very long time—isolated herself from other grimm, partly out of craving for human company and partly because she worried that she might lose her humanity and become an unkillable monster if she ‘gave in’ to the instinct she felt to seek out other grimm. Having humanlike cognition insulated her to a degree from the torturous overstimulation experienced by most solitary grimm, because she at least had the capacity to understand that she was in pain and her human senses imposed some measure of order on the incomprehensible chaos she felt all around her; but she was nevertheless in pain and terrified all the time during this period, which included the entirety of her marriage with Ozma.
It hasn’t occurred to her that many of her faults in that relationship (her prickly irritability, her quick temper, her frequent bouts of emotional numbness, her general unhappiness despite notionally having all she ever wanted—her, not to put too fine a point on it, severe depression) had a lot more to do with having been in horrific pain all the time than some sort of intrinsic wrongness within herself.
Nor has it occurred to her that ordinary people appear to struggle less with their emotions than she does because hers are much stronger. She hazily remembers that she often felt overwhelmed and too emotional when she was human, and accordingly believes that she is simply uniquely bad at ‘controlling herself.’ Which is true, in that she can count on one hand the number of years in her eons of existence when she wasn’t suffering some kind of profoundly traumatizing experience and this has utterly ruined her emotional regulation; but she is also genuinely struggling with bigger feelings than most people feel on a day-to-day basis. Everything is always dialed up to the highest setting.
She’s always been an intense, emotionally volatile person. Becoming grimm did not change the way she thinks, or how she feels about anything—she wasn’t ‘corrupted’ or infused with a violent destructive urge, the way Ozma fears. It only amplified the strength of her already quite strong feelings.

Get Well and Get Well II Part One: Get Well II Acoustic
I wish I knew more about music theory so I could further analyze this piece but here’s the breakdown:
Part one: intro and Get Well II acoustic
Part two: Get Well
Part three: Get Well II
Part four: Synthesis and Conclusion
okay so it has taken me way too long to post this but whatever here we go!
Okay, so I’ve been wanting to talk about the connection between these songs for FOREVER
So I’ve talked about the outfits and interpreted the songs through those but now I wanna focus a bit on the lyrics and sound more but the outfits are still gonna be mentioned so
https://idontwannabreakdown.tumblr.com/post/640321442244886528/ariels-outfits-in-icon-for-hire-part-one
https://idontwannabreakdown.tumblr.com/post/640343756774785024/ariels-outfits-in-icon-for-hire-part-four-still
So I kinda mentioned in Part Four of the outfits that there’s a timeline for the Get Wells which (in my mind) goes Get Well II Acoustic, Get Well, Get Well II and I’m gonna be talking about the songs in this order for the sake of clarity, but first I do want to cover the overarching themes of the songs.
When you’ve been hurt so much, it’s easy to play the victim, especially when others have tried to gaslight you or downplay your pain. But eventually, this victim mentality can become consuming. In an effort to try to validate our pain, or even find ourselves when others have spent so long tearing us down, we end up making our trauma and our mental illness our whole identity. These songs are about breaking away from that victim mentality and seeking recovery, even when everyone around us is telling us that we have to stay sick. It’s easy to find community with like-minded individuals, people who are also hurting and sick. But these types of relationships can only feed the cycle of hurt and prevent us from recovering.
In Get Well and Get Well II it’s clear that the speaker of the song has found a community with other sick individuals. These people make a spectacle of lashing out (”we throw tantrums like parties” and “my sad makes me special”). They’re total basket cases and they’re proud of it. They believe that their mental illness and trauma is a badge of honor, something to flaunt. They have “battle scars” and that makes them unique and better than those around them. But by the time the songs start, the speaker has had enough. They’re tired of being sick and they want to “get well”.
I want to start with “Get Well II (Acoustic)” because while this song came out the most recently, I feel the message of this song depicts the catalyst for the speaker of our story. The opening lines “do you want me to write you another sad song, would you like that?” with the slower tempo and piano, give the impression that the speaker has been hurt once again. The expected response is for them to throw a tantrum, to be sad, to be angry, to lash out and rage, but instead, the speaker just sounds tired. In the following lines “Do you want me to tell you we’ll never belong, would you like that?” The speaker seems to be thinking about what they have to say to comfort another member of their circle. These people have built their whole identities on being misfits but the speaker is sick of that and the lines “Cuz the truth is we’re no different than the others... we’re better off than we let on, I fear” show that. These people have grown comfortable and complacent in their sickness, but the reality is they’re not as sick as they’re pretending to be. And the speaker is fed up with that. But while they’re sick of pretending to be hurt, the speaker acknowledges that they are still damaged. “Can’t undo the scars up and down our hearts/ can’t forget how it felt when it all fell apart”. But the thing is, the speaker isn’t the only one who’s claimed they want to “get well”. The lines “and we talk a big game like we wanna get well/ in our prison made of pain/ only fooling ourselves” reveal that other members of the circle have made claims about wanting to recover. Indeed, the previous line “we say we’re over it” confirms that these people are acting like their hurt no longer defines them, yet they’re still trapped by their pain. They’re still making it a huge part of their identity, and the chorus supports this. But again, the tempo and instruments used set a tone, not of anger and resentment (like in the original version of the song) but of sorrow. Anger is a secondary emotion. Here, the speaker is feeling the initial emotion that comes with the realization that they actually want to get well, that these people they’ve surrounded themselves with are actually toxic and preventing their recovery.
In the second verse the speaker further explores how the members of the circle (themselves included) have been trying to recover from their trauma and mental illness. But there’s also a bit of resentment in this verse. The lines “I wanna look you dead in the eyes/ did you think you were the only one?” show that the speaker is fed up with how the other members of the group are acting, how they think they’re the only ones with problems. But again, the acoustic instruments change the tone. The speaker seems to feel almost sorry for the other members of the group. They feel bad and empathize with the other members of the group for feeling like they’re alone in this struggle. The lines “we’re all holding on trying to make sense of the insanity that we once loved” and “we’ve cut up our lives trying to put down the knife/ to pick up the fight” reveal the true reason as to why these people are holding on so tightly to their trauma. They’re trying to rationalize it. They’re grieving and likely in the bargaining stage of grief. They can’t let go of their sickness because they’re still trying to process what happened, but they don’t have any healthy ways to process it. They’re still hurting themselves in their attempts to recover.
Other than the tempo and style of instruments affecting the tone, another major difference between this version of the song and the original is that the acoustic version omits the lines “I need my pain/ don’t take it away/ my sad makes me special”. I think the reason for this is because at this point of realization, the speaker is not feeling special. The charm of being sick has worn off and they are left just feeling sad. This is why I think this song is the catalyst for the speaker’s journey and wanting to recover. This feeling of pure sadness is their inciting incident, it’s the feeling that makes them take a step back and say “I wanna get well”.
Part two coming soon!!!

Don’t know if there are any Daredevil fans lurking out there but either way let’s all be on the same page about Karen (Deborah Ann Woll) and Foggy (Elden Hensen) being absolutely essential for Daredevil.
As a character, especially in the Netflix Marvel series, Matt is a pained soul. Like literally, in most cases. Self-sacrificing in that classic hero way, yes, but also self-destructive, self-harming. Especially in season three, we see the way Matt, left to his own devices and without faith, is not only a danger to others, but primarily himself. From the past to present, there is something so deeply shattered within Matt and emotions and relationships.
Karen and, even more so, Foggy are what changes this narrative. They simply care for Matt, asking after his well-being and getting angry when he’s hurt. They don’t try to sympathize or entirely understand his Daredevil gig because a) they’re relatively normal people with relatively normal perceptions and b) they aren’t going to be about something that puts their friend in danger. Such genuine care is a rarity in Matt’s life, as well as this aspect of normalcy.
Karen and Foggy both relate to Matt Murdock, attorney-at-law, grounding this side of the character and giving it dimension. One of the most compelling parts of the TV series is this conflict between Matt Murdock and Daredevil, how they’re separated or really not so different. This is a central theme of nearly every season. The slice-of-life scenes with Matt, Karen, and Foggy are not only super enjoyable, but they also provide this substantial view into why Matt has this other life and keeps the two separate.
If that’s too much wordiness, then just review at the episodes. “Nelson v. Murdock” is easily in the top 5. Karen has an entire episode named “Karen.” Season 3 ends with them in Foggy’s family’s deli, restarting their practice. The show takes extreme time and effort to not only have these characters present, but actually tell their stories as well.
Unlike most current MCU features, these are characters technically inessential to the overall franchise (they are not going to be recurrent cameos, turn into future superheroes, or have grand backgrounds) but they are incredibly vital to the heart of Daredevil. Daredevil may be the titular character, however, the show is applauded as one of the best comic adaptations because that is not the singular focus. We watch for more than just baddies getting their head bashed in (though that is part of it); we watch to see Matt, as an individual, reconcile his two lives in addition to following the lives of those around him.
I genuinely can’t even fathom how they aren’t a part of the show. The only, possible and acceptable reason, would be the show taking place during the blip or the actors simply not having signed on yet. Regarding the former, it does feel like a stretch considering the character’s made appearances in two post-blip series now (Spiderman: FFH and She-Hulk), but it would be a reasonable explanation and the dynamics with The Punisher (Jon Bernthal’s having been confirmed) would be very interesting. Since the TV series centered more on the origins of Daredevil (as his skills are heavily downplayed for grittiness and he also just gets his suit), it would feel wrong to have s4 again focus on enhancing his character. Still, as Disney is family-friendly and Cox himself said the show won’t be nearly as gruesome as the series was originally, I think this narrative would feel lacking as the execution wouldn’t be able to match up to the idea. Now, if it’s the latter? Disney better be sending those contracts to Deborah Ann Woll and Elden Hensen pronto because there’s no way they can’t have the character and absolutely no way in hell they’ll be able to recast them.

Injured LI - Headcanon
Arcana Characters (Main 6) x MC
A/N: this one is for @nesiapaula, although Tumblr is being annoying and not letting me tag them properly :( please let me know if there are any spelling or grammar mistakes :) requests are open!
Warning: there’s some descriptions of injuries, as well as someone not recognizing symptoms for an illness until it became a problem— if you have health anxiety or hypochondria, these headcanons should probably be skipped. Take care of yourself! Everything’s okay!
❤️Julian❤️
Listen, he’s not the most adverse to pain
So when he comes home injured, he prefers that you not make too much of a fuss
(A little fussing is okay, he likes to feel loved)
He’s also a doctor, so if anyone is capable of looking after his wound, it’s him
The most help he might request from you is fetching materials he may need
And making some tea or coffee, if you wouldn’t mind
Overall, he just waves the experience off
With adventures like his, a few injuries are to be expected
It worries you, though; he waves off his pain to a concerning degree
How long until the wound is too deep and your help not enough?
🧡Portia🧡
She has two responses: “‘tis but a scratch” and “I’m dying”
If she’s busy working, she’ll wave off her injuries and insist she can keep going
She’s done this with a twisted ankle before, and it made things much worse
But if she’s at home and gets so much as a paper cut, you’d better be ready to baby her, because she’s absolutely howling in pain
Will legitimately ask you to kiss it better (and now you have to because who could say no to her?)
Honestly, the over dramatic reaction is probably preferable, because she’s had some close calls with the other one
Her appendix literally burst while she was working once, and she just kept going
You didn’t see it until she came home for the day, and she kept insisting she was fine
Luckily you managed to drag her to a doctor, which literally saved her life
💛Lucio💛
He views his injuries as proof of his courage and strength
So he pretty much never gets them treated on time
Unless they’re on his face, in which case he will immediately seek medical attention and whine about his beauty being ruined
But if they’re anywhere else on his body, then he insists that he wants to have some new awesome scars
Now I’m not saying that Lucio doesn’t do anything to stop them from getting infected, but I will say that Lucio doesn’t care as much as he should
So the wounds can get quite a bit worse, whether they just continuously bleed, or get infected
The more you insist he sees a doctor, the more his pride gets in the way of him going
He insists he knows his body better than anyone, and knows what he can handle, so he won’t go until he decides he needs to
It’s a miracle he’s survived this long
💚Muriel💚
He really doesn’t like being injured
Sometimes if a wound is serious enough, it can be incredibly triggering to him, so he tries to be as careful as possible
But if he still ends up injured, he takes care of it as quickly as possible
Usually he can take care of it himself
Years of living alone taught him quite a bit about looking after his own wounds and ignoring the pain
But now that you’re around, he’d much prefer it if you could tend to his wounds while he focuses on not panicking
The gentler you can be, the better
And he’d like to cuddle after it’s done, if you don’t mind
Anything to remind him that he’s safe and loved and far away from anyone who wishes him harm
💙Asra💙
While he’s definitely one to try to fix up his injuries as quickly as possible, he hates worrying you
So he’ll always downplay how much pain he’s in
If he says it’s at like a 3/10, it’s best to assume it’s at least a 6/10
A part of it is guilt— he wasn’t there during the most painful part of your life, so he shouldn’t burden you with his own hurt
He’ll ask for help if he needs it, and remains calm while directing you to do anything you don’t already know
He makes jokes the entire time as a way to cope and keep the mood light
Once it’s done, he’ll act like it never happened
He’ll drink a cup of tea, cuddle with you, take a nap, and be good as new
💜Nadia💜
The odds of Nadia ever being hurt and slim to none
She’s too graceful and skilled to be hurt in any mundane way
Not to mention the fact that she has some of the greatest doctors in history to tend to her if need be
So overall, you never really have to be worried
If anything, you might enjoy a little extra time to spend with her outside of her regular duties
And while she also loves spending time with you, she can’t help but feel ashamed for taking time to herself while her citizens are suffering every day
She’s not a fool; she recognizes her privilege, and knows that no matter how bad her injuries are, there are always people who have less
She wants to help them more than anything, and often pushes aside her own well-being for them
You’ll have to remind her not to undermine her own pain, and take the time she needs so that she can give all of her effort to them when she’s at her best

coming back to this post i made again to elaborate - especially as the ted lasso fandom is discussing sam/rebecca and fandom racism in general. there are takes that are important to make that i had failed to previously, but there's also a growing amount of takes that i have to, As A Black Person™, respectfully disagree with.
tl;dr for the essay below sam being infantilized and the sam/rebecca relationship are not the same issue and discussing the former one doesn't mean excusing the latter. and we've reached the glen of the Dark Forest where we sit down and talk about fandom racism.
i should have elaborated this in my last post about sam/rebecca, but i didn't. i'll say it now - i personally don't support sam and rebecca getting together for real. i believe what people are saying is entirely correct, even though sam is an adult legally, he and rebecca are, at the very least, two wildly different stages of life. for americans, he's at the equivalent of being a junior in college. there are things he hasn't gotten the chance to experience and there are areas he needs to grow in. when i was younger, i didn't understand the significance of these age gaps, i just thought it would be fine if it was legal, but as someone who is now a little older than sam in universe, i understand fully. we can't downplay this. whether or not you think sam works for rebecca or not, even despite the gender inversion of the Older Man Younger Woman trope, whether or not he is a legal adult, i don't think at this point in time, their relationship would work. i think it's an interesting narrative device, but i don't want to see it play out in reality.
that being said!
what's worrying me is that two discussions are being conflated here that shouldn't be. sam having agency and being a little more grown™ than he's perceived to be does not suddenly make his relationship with rebecca justified. i had decided to bring it up because sam was being brought into the spotlight again and i was starting to realizing that his infantilization was more common than i felt comfortable with.
sam's infantilization (and i will continue to call it that), is a microaggression. it's is in the range of microaggressions that i would categorize as 'fandom overcompensation'. we have a prominent character of color that exhibits traits that aren't stereotypical, and we don't want to appear racist or stereotypical, so we lean hard in the other direction. they're not aggressive, they're a Sweet Baby, they're not world weary, they're now a little naive. they're not cold and distant, they're so nice and sweet that there's no one that wouldn't want approach them, and yeah, on their face, these new traits are a departure and, on their face, they seem they look really good.
but at a certain point, it reaches an inflection point, and, like the aftertaste of a diet coke, that alleged sweetness veers into something a lot less sweet. it veers into a lack of agency for the character. it veers into an innocence that appears to indicate that the person can't even take care of themselves. it veers into a one-dimensional characterization that doesn't allow for any depth or negative emotion.
it's not kind anymore. it's not a nice departure from negative stereotypes. it's not compensating for anything.
it's patronizing.
it is important that we emphasize that characters of color are more than the toxic stereotypes we lay on them, yes, but we make a mistake in thinking that the solution is overcorrection. for one thing, people of color can usually tell. don't get it twisted, it's actually pretty obvious. for another, it just shifts from one dimension to another. people of color are still supposed to be Only One Character Trait while white people can contain multitudes. ted, who is pretty much as pollyanna as they come, can be at once innocent and naive and deep and troubled and funny and scared. jamie can be a prick and sexy and also lonely and also a victim of abuse. sam, however, even though he was bullied (by jamie, no less), is thousands of miles away from home, and has led a protest on his team, is usually just characterized as human sunshine with much less acknowledgement of any other traits beyond that.
and that's why i cringe when fandom calls sam a Sweet Baby Boy without any sense of irony. is that all we're taking away? after all this time? even for a comedy, sam has received a substantive of screen time over two whole seasons, and we've seen a range of emotions from him. so as a black person it's hurtful that it's boiled down to Sweet Baby Boy.
that's the problem. we need to subvert stereotypes, but more importantly, we need to understand that people of color are not props, or pieces of cardboard for their white counterparts. they are full and actualized and have agency in their own right and they can have other emotions than Angry and Mean or Sweet and Bubbly without any nuance between the two. i think the show actually does a relatively good job of giving sam depth (relatively, always room for improvement, mind you), especially holding it in tension with his youth, but the fandom, i worry, does not.
it's the same reason why finn from star wars started out as the next male protagonist in the sequel trilogy but by the third movie was just running around yelling for REY!! it's the same reason why when people make Phase 4 Is the Phase For Therapy gifsets for the mcu and show wanda maximoff, loki, and bucky barnes crying and being sad but purposefully exclude sam wilson who had an entire show to tell us how difficult his life is, because people find out if pee oh sees are also complex, they'll tell the church.
and the reason why i picked up on this very early on is because i am an organic, certified fresh, 100% homegrown, non-gmo, a little ashy, indigenous sub saharan African black person. the ghanaian tribes i'm descended from have told me so, my black ass parents have told me so, and the nurses at the hospital in [insert asian country here] that started freaking out about how curly my hair was as my mother was mid pushing me out told me so!
and this stuff has real life implications. listen: being patronized as a black person sucks. do you know how many times i was patted on the back for doing quite honestly, the bare minimum in school? do you know how many times i was told how 'well spoken' or 'eloquent' i was because i just happen to have a white accent or use three syllable words? do you know how many times i've been cooed over by white women who couldn't get over how sweet i was just because i wasn't confrontational or rude like they wrongly expected me to be?
that's why they're called microaggressions. it's not a cross on your lawn or having the n-word spat in your face, but it cuts you down little by little until you're completely drained.
so that's the nuance. that's the subversion. the overcompensation is not a good thing. and people of color (and i suspect, even white people) have picked up on, in general, the different ways fandom treats sam and dani and even nate. what all of these discussions are converging on is fandom racism, which is not the diet form of racism, but another place for racism to reveal itself. and yeah, it's uncomfortable. it can seem out of left field. you may want to defend yourself. you may want to explain it away. but let me tap the sign on the proverbial bus:
if you are a white person, or a person of color who is not part of that racial group, even, you do not get to decide what is not racist for someone. full stop. there are no exceptions. there is no exit clause for you. there is no 'but, actually-'. that right wasn't even yours to cede or waive.
(it's also important to note that people of color also have the right to disagree on whether something is racist, but that doesn't necessarily negate the racism - it just means there's more to discuss and they can still leave with different interpretations)
people don't just whip out accusations of racism like a blue eyes white dragon in a yu-gi-oh duel. it's not fun for us. it's not something we like to do to muzzle people we don't want to engage with. and we're not concerned with making someone feel bad or ashamed. we're exposing something painful that we have to live with and, even worse, process literally everything we experience through. we can't turn it off. we can't be 'less sensitive' or 'less nitpicky'. we are literally the primary resources, we are the proverbial wikipedia articles with 3,000 sources when it comes to racism. who else would know more than us?
what 2020 has shown us very clearly is that racism is systemic. it's not always a bunch of Evil White Men rubbing their hands together in a dark room wondering how they're going to use the 'n-word' today. it's systemic. it's the way you call that one neighborhood 'sketchy'. it's how you use 'ratchet' and 'ghetto' when describing something bad. it's how you implicitly the assume the intelligence of your friend of color. it's the way you turned up your nose and your friend's food and bullied them for it in middle school but go to restaurants run by white people who have 'uplifted' it with inauthentic ingredients. it's telling someone how Well Spoken and Eloquent they are even though you've both gone to the same schools and work at the same workplace. it's the way you look down at some people of color for having a different body type than you because they've been redlined to neighborhoods where certain foods and resources are inaccessible, and yet mock up the racial features that appeal to you either through makeup or plastic surgery.
it's how when a person of color behaves badly, they're irredeemable, but a white person performing the same act or something similar is 'having a bad day' or 'isn't normally like this' or 'has room to grow' and we can't 'wait for their redemption arc', and yes, i'm not going to cover it in detail in this post but yes this is very much about nate. other people have also brought up the nuances in his arc and compared them to other white characters so i won't do it here.
these behaviors and reactions aren't planned. they aren't orchestrated. they're quite literally unconscious because they've been lovingly baked into western society for centuries. you can't wake up and be rid of it. whether you intended it or not, it can still be racist.
and it's actually quite hurtful and unfair to imply that concerns about racism in the TL fandom are unfounded or lacking any depth or simply meant to be sensational because you simply don't agree with it. i wish it was different, but it doesn't work that way. i'm not raising this up to 'call out' or shame people, but i'm adding to this discussion because, through how we talk about sam, and even dani and nate, i'm yet again seeing a pattern that has shortchanged people of color and made them feel unwelcome in fandom for far too long.
coach beard said it best: we need to do better.

Omega!Shouto Pregnancy Emotions
Anon: This is a request take it if you like haha-Okay how is Todoroki (Shoto) while being prego? Does he get super sexual? Insecure? Happy? Moody? Scared? What does he feel and how do you react to those feelings?
(Hmm, okay, here are some of the primary emotions for Shouto during pregnancy. I hope you enjoy~)
Warnings: None
Tumblr media
Some of the main emotions that impact Shouto Todoroki during his pregnancy:
Pained:
Because of Endeavour’s less than stellar parenting style and discriminatory beliefs towards omegas, Shouto’s reproductive system isn’t especially healthy. For that reason, some parts of pregnancy are more painful for Shouto than they would be for most other omegas.
One of the impacts is that the doctors recommend a c-section delivery. Male omegas have a higher risk of needing a c-section than female omegas in general, but Shouto’s hips and pelvis are not very flexible, so he’s at an even higher risk. His hips are not used to shifting, something that he should have experienced gradually starting from teenagerhood but did not because of the super strong suppressants he was on.
So, while he’s pregnant, the following things cause him a lot of pain:
Stomach aches – his stomach is flush against his uterus which is not behaving normally and giving him some problems. It upsets his stomach and it’s something that lasts for his entire pregnancy.
Lower back aches – his hips do try to widen in anticipation of delivering a baby, but it doesn’t work very well for him and is quite painful.
His chest – the doctors are originally unsure as to whether Shouto is going to be able to breast feed. They give him some extra hormones to stimulate milk production in the hopes that it will help. It does help actually, and Shouto is able to breast feed, but the hormones make his chest very swollen for most of his pregnancy. This is common in late pregnancy of course, but for Shouto it’s a little earlier than that and a little more jarring.
You felt helpless as you watched your mate curl up on the couch in pain, knowing there wasn’t anything you could do to fix it. He’d been having stomach and back pains all day and had to come home from work because they had been so bad. You’d also come home from work to pick him up and take care of him. You sighed to yourself as you looked down at him. He was only three months along, but it was looking like he might have to stop working sooner rather than later. Shouto would be miserable if he was forced to make that decision, but there was nothing either of you could do about it.
Shouto’s huff of frustration pulled you out of your thoughts. He was fidgeting with the heating pad that was wrapped around the right side of his tummy. He had been having some trouble balancing his temperature since he got pregnant and he couldn’t warm his stomach by himself. Losing quirk control wasn’t uncommon during pregnancy but having to use a heating pad did make Shouto embarrassed at first.
“How are you feeling?” you asked, kneeling down onto the floor beside him.
“Fine,” came Shouto’s muffled voice from where he had his face buried in a cushion.
“You don’t look fine,” you teased gently, linking you fingers with that hand that Shouto was using to fiddle with the heating pad. “Is something wrong with the heating pad?”
“No,” he huffed. “It’s just too small.”
Without missing a moment, you replied with,
“That’s what she said.”
“Who said what?” Shouto questioned, eyebrows furrowed.
You snorted at the joke going over his head. He was never good at understanding innuendo humour.
“It doesn’t matter, my love. But the heating pad is too small? Is your back hurting too?”
Shouto nodded, nuzzling into the cushion and messing up his hair as he did it. You smoothed his hair back down with a hand.
“I know it only needs to go on my right side, but I still can’t get it to sit right.”
You hummed in understanding.
“You want me to go and get a second one from the shop? Or a hot water bottle or something? Unfortunately, I’m not sure we have anything else in the house.”
Shouto hesitated, seeming unsure.
“I really don’t mind going, this is my fault after all,” you joked, placing a hand on his small bump.
“You’re warm,” Shouto muttered.
“I’m warm?”
Shouto blushed and didn’t respond. A teasing grin settled onto your face.
“Do you want me to lay behind you?”
Shouto nodded vigorously but didn’t make eye contact.
You agreed, quickly gathering some water and snacks to put within arm’s reach, before you awkwardly climbed behind Shouto and pulled him flush against your chest to spoon him. You started to rub his stomach to settle him.
Shouto relaxed under your attention and closed his eyes.
“Try to get some sleep, Shouto.”
 Embarrassed:
Shouto doesn’t really suffer from insecurity, but he does get quite embarrassed sometimes at the new way his body is now working.
One very embarrassing thing that I’ve already mentioned is that his control over his powers weakens for the duration for his pregnancy.
During late pregnancy, hiccups involve accidentally setting objects in the house on fire. Shouto can put them out very quickly, but he still finds the fact that his iron clad control has degraded to be very embarrassing.
Another embarrassing thing for Shouto is the limitations on his independence.
Eventually, Shouto can’t put his own shoes on, or clean himself properly and he has to rely on his Alpha for all of it.
(Well, at first, his chosen strategy is just to keep trying by himself until he basically gives his alpha an aneurysm when he almost hurts himself by accident.)
Shouto gets moody and embarrassed when he has to ask for help for small things.
But by far the thing that embarrasses him the most, is his weak pregnancy bladder.
Sneezing becomes a dangerous game for him between the bladder and the spontaneous fire or ice usage.
At one point, Shouto refuses to have sex with his alpha for a couple of weeks because he’s too nervous that he’ll…er… well, lose control.
To deal with all the embarrassment, Shouto’s alpha needs to just downplay any incidents as much as possible, even going so far as to pretend not to notice certain things. This would go a long way in reducing Shouto’s anxiety and embarrassment. Also, indulging him when he says he wants to stay at home because he’s embarrassed will help him a lot.
To summarise, pregnancy weakens the control he has over himself in many ways, and Shouto becomes very embarrassed when he’s reminded of that.
Unfortunately for Shouto, pregnancy being horribly embarrassing is a fact of life.
Clingy:
It is very common for pregnant omegas to feel a lot more possessive and clingier with their alphas.
Hormones are all over the place, and omegas are technically at their most vulnerable (barring heats) so it is a very normal instinct to want to be around the person who their instincts consider as the safest and most able to protect them and their unborn pup.
Shouto is no exception. He pouts when you have to leave the house. He is not impressed at all if you come home with the scent of another omega clinging to your clothes, even if he knows the scent. He calls you about fifteen times on the days when you’re at work, mainly to ask when you’ll be back (even though he already knows), tell you innocuous things about his day, or ask you to pick something up from the shops on your way home.
Shouto is big on cuddling as well, and whenever you’re both in the house, he demands cuddles all the time. He’s a very minimalist nester and so he normally just throws on one of your hoodies and drags a pillow and a blanket onto the couch, before dragging you to lay with him.
(Shouto goes through so many films whilst he’s pregnant because he rarely gets off of the sofa and he likes to have a film playing while he lounges.)
Basically, everything feels better when his alpha is with him. All his alpha needs to do is make sure they’re with him as much as possible, especially in his third trimester, when he’s the most anxious and clingy. (Avoiding getting too close to other omegas is also probably a good idea. Pregnant omegas, including Shouto, can get very worked up about that.)
Your lunch break had just started, and like every other day for the past month, the second your lunch break started, your phone would ring. You picked up your phone in anticipation. Any second now…
Bzzzt. Bzzzt.
You smiled automatically as Shouto’s name popped up. You quickly swiped to answer and held it up to your ear.
“Hey, Sho, how’s your day going?”
“Good,” he answered, and you could distantly hear the shuffling of blankets as he rearranged himself on the sofa. “I finished the film Midoriya recommended today.”
“Oh, and how was it?”
“It was good but, I also finished the crisps you bought for me yesterday while I was watching it. Could you bring some more home tonight?”
“Uh huh, of course, baby,” you said, picking up a pen to jot ‘crisps for Sho’ at the top of your to-do list.
There was silence for a few moments as you listened to Shouto continue to shuffle around.
“When are you going to be back?”
“You know when,” you laughed gently. “Asking me isn’t going to make time go faster.”
Shouto whined into the phone, and you immediately sat up straighter. That wasn’t his normal reaction.
“Shouto? Are you okay?”
“Yeah, I…” you could hear a small sniffle through the phone.
“Hey, hey, hey, what’s wrong, sweetheart? Do you want me to come home?”
“I… I’m sorry, you don’t have to come home, it’s okay.”
“Shouto, you’re freaking me out, tell me what’s going on?” you tried to keep your voice steady to soothe him, despite your own worries bubbling at the surface.
“No, it’s just that,” a small sob escaped him. “Your hoodie doesn’t smell like you anymore.”
You blinked for a moment before sagging in your chair in relief. It was pregnancy hormone induced crying, not emergency crying.
“It’s okay, Sho,” you cooed. “I’ll be home soon, and I’ll scent it as much as you want, I promise.”
“Hmm, okay…” he sniffed. “But come home quick, please.”
“I will, if we hang up now, I can work through my lunch break and head home early, sound good? Maybe you should watch another film and the time will go more quickly?”
“Okay… Goodbye…”
“Goodbye sweetheart, I love you and I’ll see you soon.”

INFJ. Processing past Fe failures. Want to get better at socializing / having deeper relationships/friendships. Muddling through Ti development - desiring to get better at self-awareness + communication. A lot in my brain and it'd be a lot to share the entirety of recent exchanges that have ended up in failed relationships, so I'll try asking this and hope it's enough to get critical thinking help from you, thank you much in advance. (1/2)
[con't: I notice a pattern of me trying to communicate and express myself to be understand by, or be emotionally met by Fi users, and them responding by saying things like "I don't know what you want from me", "I don't know how to help you," "I'm sorry you feel that way" or them even saying variations of "Maybe you're not used to my communication style" (ENTJ) if I express that I feel dismissed, uncomfortable, or disrespected.
This isn't ALL Fi users thank God & I'm in therapy now to address my downplaying of my emotional needs, being willing to work through anything even though the romantic relationships I'm attracting are woefully incompatible or unhealthy. But I want to get better at doing my part to increase the chance of relationships building. What am I doing/expecting/judging in my communication with Fi users so they respond that way or has me feeling being unseen/misunderstood? Is it the basic INFJ recs?]
You point to Fi specifically. Fi doesn't require outside validation, so perhaps what you're encountering is their lack of concept of outside validation, in the manner that you're seeking it with Fe.
All of those example statements sound like they could be taken sincerely. "I don't know what you want from me" could be an opportunity for you to better explain what you need/want. "I don't know how to help you" could be an opportunity for you to provide better instructions. "I'm sorry you feel that way" could be a helpless admission that the two of you don't see things the same way. "Maybe you're not used to my communication style" could be an indication that there is a need to investigate the big gap between what was perceived and what was actually intended.
Not everyone is going to see eye-to-eye with you, not everyone is going to agree with your version of events, not everyone is going to care about your needs and feelings enough to address them kindly and patiently. This should all be okay with you unless you were walking around expecting everyone out there to have the capacity to meet you emotionally or validate your emotions (unhealthy Fe)? That's simply not gonna happen, so it's an unreasonable expectation. That's why it's so important that YOU be the first to take care of yourself and own your emotions, set proper personal boundaries, and navigate interpersonal boundaries more gracefully.
If you feel someone has violated your boundary (i.e. you feel hurt by them), the answer isn't to violate theirs in return. You're trying to fix a problem in the relationship, so further damaging the relationship isn't going to help. Whether you are right to feel hurt is not the main issue. Feelings themselves are always true and tell you something true about you. However, what you DO about the feelings isn't always right. There are two main ways people deal with negative feelings: 1) bottle them up, which amounts to self-harm, or 2) express them, which opens up the possibility of doing harm to others, if they don't have the means to process your feelings. Neither way is ideal.
If your main approach is to expect people to change (when they can't or don't want to), expect them to give you more than they are capable of giving (due to not having the means or resources), expect them to understand something that they are not really capable of understanding (when they just don't think in the same way as you), etc, your expectations are easily perceived as "demands". You're essentially pressuring people to be what you want them to be, which amounts to dishonoring them and violating their boundary. This approach is usually met with submission or resistance. If they submit to you (because they care for you), they will be unhappy for having allowed you to violate their boundary, and the problem will recur because it was only swept under the rug. If they resist you, conflict ensues, and the relationship bond will be tested and possibly threatened, especially if the conflict recurs without resolution.
There is a way to honor your feelings while also honoring others' feelings. It requires you to have good emotional intelligence and be a good communicator. Good emotional intelligence means respecting your feelings and taking full responsibility for them. Instead of seeing yourself as the victim (i.e. "you made me feel this way"), you see yourself as an agent with the power to decide what is best (i.e. "I feel this way and this is what I should do about it"). Positioning yourself as a passive or helpless victim means that you cast blame and eventually demand reparations. Positioning yourself as an active and influential agent means that you survey the situation objectively and then try to act in the best interests of everyone involved. This is what healthy and confident Fe should look like.
For example, when you feel dismissed, maybe you bottle it up for awhile, until you can't take it anymore (because the problem remains unaddressed). Then you confront people and say, "I feel dismissed". This implies that the other person has done something bad to you. You are the victim, which puts them on the spot, feeling like the bad guy, and then they can't hear you, due to becoming too preoccupied with not wanting to be the bad guy. Communication is likely to stall there, unless they have the wherewithal (emotional intelligence) to keep their focus on you and your concerns.
Instead, you could say to yourself, "I feel dismissed". You take full responsibility for your feelings and validate them for yourself. When you are good at validating your own feelings and emotions (something you admit you really struggle with), you'll eventually find that you won't need to rely on others to do it for you.
What does it mean to feel dismissed? It means that you believe you're not being taken seriously, or something to that effect. Not very difficult to understand. What to do about it? The feeling of disharmony is a message to you that you have to do more to advocate for yourself and make space for yourself within the relationship/group (it is good Fe advice). There are many ways to advocate for yourself without stepping on others. If you choose the right way, in terms of honoring everyone involved, the feeling of being dismissed will dissipate naturally. If you choose the wrong way, in terms of honoring yourself but dishonoring others, you'll encounter the problem again, because you haven't addressed the underlying problem of you positioning yourself as the victim in every relationship conflict. Chronic victim mentality is often an indication that you depend too much on outside validation of your self-worth.
Unless you are stuck in a very toxic social environment, the majority of people are not malicious for no reason. Before accusing or blaming, are you absolutely certain that they INTENDED to dismiss you? If not, wouldn't it be wise to gather more info? For instance, you could ask something like, "Have you had the time to give my idea serious consideration?" No blaming, no battling, no victim-victimizer dynamic. Do you understand how communicating without blame, through genuine inquiry, avoids trapping the both of you in a vicious cycle of seeking emotional reparations? You give people the benefit of the doubt. You give people the chance to clarify or explain. You give yourself the chance to grasp the FULL picture so that you can make a more informed decision about what to do (based on their response to your question). But this presence of mind isn't possible when you can't accept your feelings/emotions and they run wild as a result.
One common misapplication of Ti is the tendency to jump to illogical conclusions or make up illogical stories about what is motivating people's negative behavior, all the while believing that you're being completely logical. It's a destructive way to deal with negative or disharmonious feelings. Once the false narrative infects your mind, you can't help but perceive the person as attacking you, even when they're not. This misuse of Ti is a major impediment to relationship building.
The problem with victim mentality is that you are hyperfocused on your perspective only, so you only have half the picture, which means making ill-informed decisions. If you are prone to Ti loop, you need to get to the bottom of why you're so quick to position yourself in the passive position of victim. A healthy relationship should be an equal partnership based on trust, which means that you should always try to 1) give people the benefit of the doubt, and 2) gather the facts of the situation before drawing a conclusion about what they intended or what kind of character they are.
If the fact of the matter is that the person really doesn't care about your feelings, then you know not to seek validation from them, and perhaps distance from them for your own good. Don't play around in toxic or abusive relationships. If the fact of the matter is that your perception of the situation doesn't match up with what they intended to say/do, then it's up to you to straighten out the situation in your mind before proceeding.
Trust your feelings, validate your feelings, but don't act blindly on them (i.e. without fully grasping what's happening with the other person). Figure out why exactly you're feeling what you're feeling, then take it up with the person in a way that addresses the root of the problem and in a way that doesn't immediately put them on the defensive. Conflict is sometimes unavoidable, but being more skilled at communicating your concerns will certainly reduce the amount of pain required to reach a resolution.

Out of the many things I strongly dislike from the show I think episode 5 pissed me off the most.
Other than the fact that the dialogue was incredibly childish, the scene where all the Lokis basically betray each other is so utterly pathetic and so unbelievably insulting to the title character that I was physically recoiling while watching it.
But upon more thinking there's something else about that ep that not only angers me but makes me incredibly sad.
All the variants in The Void have been effectively manipulated both psychologically and emotionally by the TVA, and it's clear to realize just by listening to them and how they speak about the other variants (therefore giving a glimpse of what they truly think of themselves).
Classic!Loki is specially hurting (perhaps due to age, it's likely he's been there for longer than the others, time is a bit sketchy) but his lines are painful to hear.
Starting with the "He's overly sensitive like the rest of us". This is something that is usually said to scapegoats or otherwise victims of abuse to downplay their feelings and invalidate their experiences. After all, if you're too sensitive the ball is on your court - you should strengthen up, you should have tougher skin... whoever has wronged you gets away scot-free. What's painful about this is Classic!Loki has internalized that and even says that line with a smile on his face, but there's nothing amusing about that. It's tragic.
Then he's explaining his escape from Thanos and: "Everywhere I went only pain followed so I removed myself from the equation. We have but one part to play: the God of outcasts, nothing more." This is 100% typical TVA bullshit. Only one part to play? According to who? Notice how no matter how old this variant is he believes everything he's saying as the ultimate truth. We may not have seen his session with the minutemen but it sure as hell wasn't a good one if they managed to imprint this shit in his head.
You'd think "our" Loki would probably see beyond that (after all, isn't this show about self-love? pfft) but unsurprisingly... he does not. After he gives that speech on how to defeat Alioth and they all laugh at him, he leaves the bunker but not before he calls those variants (variants of his own self, don't forget)... "monsters".
Loki calling himself a monster. Wow, never seen that before. Such growth...
Also, just one more thing about that. Why do they laugh? Because they have lost all hope, they all have been effectively manipulated into believing their only destiny is to lose, so much so to the point of not even trying. This is the TVA's doing!
So, they leave the bunker after that pathetic scene the writers must have thought was so funny to watch and Classic!Loki is almost losing it: "Animals, animals! We lie and we cheat, we cut the throat of every person who trusts us, and for what? Power. Glorious power. Glorious purpose! We cannot change. We're broken, every version of us. Forever."
And if that wasn't bad enough here comes Kid!Loki: "And whenever one of us dares try to fix themselves, they're sent here to die."
We always talk about the terrible job the writers have done in this show but this particular scene? Yeah it bothers me because this isn't true but the variants believe it to be. That's the tragedy. All Lokis want is power? Since when? Loki never wanted the throne in the first movie, the NYC invasion wasn't about power either, that was never at the core of what Loki's character is about. But the TVA made them believe it was, that their goddamn (and repeated to the extenuation) glorious purpose was always about power and betrayal - even though the canon proves otherwise.
But here we have variants who have spent an unknown time in The Void wholeheartedly believing all the lies that have been told to them to the point of not even trying to escape, not bothering with leaving either, and choosing to stay (die) instead.
If this show was truly about self-love "our" Loki would have done his utmost to convince his variants all of that shit was a lie implanted by those who aim to control them, he would have never abandoned them and he would have done anything to help them out. He would have done that for them and for himself.
But what did we get from the show, what's the framing of the episode? Those variants are right in what they say, they have finally seen the truth of what they are (liars, cheaters, etc)... but of course Sylvie is different. That's it, that's the message.
Self-love my ass.

The Sambucky fandom spends a lot of time and energy on calling out writers for using problematic, often straight up racist, tropes in their fics. And rightfully so, because some of said tropes are not only unplesant to read for many readers, but also harmful if they help to perpetuate some awful stereotypes. That being said... I feel like we need to show the other side of the spectrum more often and sometimes focus on people who don’t make these mistakes.
----- ------- -----
So here is my personal THANK YOU! to all the writers who have never used these offensive stereotypes in their Sambucky fanfiction and who:
1. Give as much attention to Sam’s side of the story as they give to Bucky’s and do not focus solely on Bucky’s emotions about their developing relationship when it’s a mixed POV.
2. Acknowledge Sam’s trauma and all the loss he experienced in the past (not only in the context where his pain is used to help him better connect with another person who’s hurting).
3. Show other characters (Bucky or not) helping Sam go through his more diffucult moments (bad days, nightmares, painful flashbacks).
4. Show Sam having these more difficult moments.
5. Don’t act like Bucky’s traumatic past is enough of an excuse for his unpleasant behaviour towards Sam. (E.g. they don’t write a story where Sam forgives Bucky every mean, ignorant comment without thinking, just because Bucky’s sad.)
6. Show Sam experiencing variety of emotions - not just frustration and adoration towards Bucky. Show him being sad, happy, disappointed, confused, hopeful, dejected, relieved, terrified, confident etc.
7. Show Sam being the more vulnerable one in the relationship (in general or just in cerain situations)
8. Write scenes where Sam is shy or a little awkward (about his relationship with Bucky or about something else). Also write him being insecure sometimes.
9. Write just as much about Sam’s appearance as they do about Bucky’s. (Both as a narrator and through a character’s compliments or thoughts.)
10. Mention how beautiful Sam’s eyes are... especially if there is more than one line about them. (Plus mention their colour like... at all.)
11. Describe Sam’s appearance focusing on something outside of his smile or muscles. (Not that these are not nice, but there are other things to compliment and they’re hardly ever pointed out.) (Very much including hair or skincolour.)
12. Write Sam making mistakes, but not in a way that insinuates that he’s stupid or incompetent, but in a way that shows he’s a normal person who can sometimes be wrong and own up to it. (Unless he’s the only person in the story who always messes up...)
13. Show Sam being very competent. And show Bucky appreciating Sam’s competence, skills, and knowledge in various fields. (Also write Sam being a badass.)
14. Write about Sam’s background in pararescue, his medical training, skills in combat, flexibility, speed, ability to fly, ability to fix his advanced equipment, strenght, the fact that he’s pretty stealthy etc...
15. Write about the importance of Sam’s relationship with Steve even when Steve’s past connection to Bucky is not relevant to the story at any point.
16. Write Bucky being openly grateful for all the things that Sam did for him and write Bucky helping Sam back even when Sam didn’t specifically ask, because they genuinely care about each other.
17. Write about Sam’s past as a therapist not in the context of him helping Bucky get better, but because it’s relevant to the story and it’s something he has a lot of experience with. Or simply because it’s a significant part of his previous life journey.
18. Show Sam being frustrated or angry without falling into bad stereotypes. And show why his anger was justified and he had the right to react like that, because he doesn’t have to be polite and dyplomatic about everything if other people (Bucky very much included) don’t act respectful towards him in the first place.
19. Acknowledge that Sam is AJ and Cass’s actual uncle. The kids might like Bucky, but they’ve known and loved Sam for way longer... and I rarely see that mentioned.
20. Write about Sam’s past romantic relationships without focusing only on Bucky being jealous about them.
21. Show Sam’s interactions with other characters - not just in a romantic context, but also in terms of friendships (MCU Natasha was closer to Sam than Bucky and fics rarely talk about that), professional cooperation, rivalry and so on.
22. Mention the social commentary brought up in tfatws without brushing it to the side or downplaying the importance of Sam’s race in the formation of his character and storyline.
23. Acknowledge that Sam is human and his body is not enhanced in any way... without making it sound like he’s too weak to do the job.
24. But also... write about Bucky using his super strenght to carry Sam around and to pick him up all the time (for whatever reason), because it’s cute. Sue me.
25. Point out that Sam is slightly shorter than Bucky without always making Sam weirdly insecure about it.
26. Write Sam as Bucky’s first choice... not a second option he picked for the lack of a better candidate for a boyfriend.
27. Understand that Sam has a life outside of Bucky even if their friendship and romantic relationship are obviously very important for him.
28. Write Bucky touching Sam in reassuring, delicate ways. (Holding his hands,  cupping his face, touching his hair, kissing the tip of his nose.)
29. Let Sam make harmless jokes, be charming, and be actually a nice person even when he’s not actively helping anyone. Just let him have a complex, but pleasant personality.
30. Let him be sarcastic without making him mean.
31. Add Figaro (Sam’s cat) to the stories about pets. Or show Sam’s emotional attachment to Redwing, even when it’s still a drone, not a bird.
32. Don’t forget that Riley died. And Sam’s parents died. And his close friends died. And other close friend left him without saying goodbye... etc. (Also don’t forget he himself died at one point...)
33. Mention and discuss Sam’s sexuality and romantic orientation (both in the tags to the story and in the actual text). ...I feel like it’s often unspecified for no reason while Bucky’s identity is clear from the start.
34. Give Sam little hobbys and interests that are unrelated to his work or his ability to make other people’s lives better.
35. Write about Sam’s fears and doubts while not forgetting he’s generally a very brave, mostly confident person.
36. Make the audience feel like Sam is a necessary part of the story. Not just a character added hastily at the end of writing just so the author can tag his name, because the ship he’s a part of is currently more popular than before and showind him at last minute will attract some readers to click.
and... 37. Do the things mentioned above in all of their Sambucky stories and use more than one of these ideas at a time.
----- ------- -----
To people who wrote stories with these tropes... You guys are doing a great job and I appreaciate your work a lot. It’s easy to focus on complaining, because the Sam/Bucky tag on Ao3 was always kind of a mess, but my day genuinely gets better every time I find one of your stories. So thank you again and keep it up :>
(Side note: if you have any recommendations for fics that use the ideas I wrote in this post feel free to link them in the comments. Because the bar is hanging pretty low at this point and some authors still wouldn’t be able to cross a single point from my list if they examined their - allegendly - “Sambucky” stories... so we should promote the content that is actually good.)

Victor Frankenstein and Frustration: a Not-Essay, because I can’t structure for shit.
Alright, I’ll try to keep it as clean and concise as I can, but at the end of the day this is a sorta-heat-in-the-moment thing I’m writing while all the ideas and motivation are in me yet. I will be jumping around alot of topics, as this covers alot of ground, but I can’t say I’ll do it with grace: for this, I apologise.
I’ve noticed a trend in online lit fandom, not just on Tumblr, to condense Victor’s character to something roughly following “arrogant, ineffectual and selfish weenie who failed horribly at parenting, who ought not to be taken seriously in any significant way, largely in-due to his constant whining“ --In other words, a right twat.
And here’s the thing: largely, I agree.
However, what I take issue with, I suppose, is largely how this is all framed.
See, fandom has a tendency to sort characters into boxes, and then pick favourites or bête noires from that selection; this is helpful for the largely memetic(as in, shareable,) nature of online spaces; but where I think this thinking falls short is that it tends to divide casts into More Good or More Evil, with little room for nuance.
I think you can see where I’m going with this.
Victor Frankenstein, by all accounts, is an incredibly frustrating character to witness; he gets way in over his head, isolates himself from his loved ones, leaving them worried, deems those ambitions failed, hides from them, then when shit starts hitting the fan, he takes initial actions to try and mitigate the consequence, hits a roadblock, either stops their or chooses an even worse option, someone else gets hurt, he whines, rinse and repeat until the final act of the book, as the stakes get higher and higher and his mental state deteriorates more, and more, and more. If you look at this entirely from an outsiders’ perspective, as you, the audience, being subjected to his moaning time and time again, it can wear on you and your sympathies-- Needless to say, I Get It™.
I think, however, it needs be remarked that Victor is also just some guy.
What I feel is often missed, is that even before Victor goes to university, he has just suffered the loss of his mother, with little time to recover, and that all of this is being told in hindsight, on his deathbed.
When Victor took on, all by himself, at twenty-two years old, not even letting anyone else know what he was up to, the monumental task of creating life, and then finding that life horribly botched, he did not have the perspective that what he created was equivalent to a newborn child-- For all he knew, he might have animated an actual demon. It isn’t until two years later, after the death of his little brother at the hands of said demon, the he’s even remotely made aware of this.
Victor had worn himself out over the course of several months, physically and mentally, to this one task. He was not equipped to deal witht he consequences. I do not say this to downplay the weight of his actions, or the horrible mess of events that come afterwards, but to state perspective. Victor does not have the hindsight we have at the time of this act. I cannot stress this enough. As much as I enjoy Deadbeat Dad Vick jokes, I get the feeling many people actually view the story from this lens, and hold Victor up to that standard.
Then there’s the trial of Justine: a horrible, useless, unneeded and avoidable affair that ends in even more senseless death. This is where alot of people’s sympathy for Victor runs out-- For more than understandable reasons. He failed to act accordingly, to share the information he had, deeming it to be either dismissed instantly or for himself to be put under scrutiny; it’s clear he’s passionate about Justine’s innocence, but he cannot push himself past his fear and doubt, and ultimately, it ends in her death.
It is a horrible, horrible moment, and one that cements the tone of the story from there on out.
These are two key events that largely colour this image of Victor so prevelant online; and it certainly doesn’t help, what with fandom being almost aggressively left-leaning at times, that Victor comes from a place of privilege; he is almost tailor-made to push all the buttons of fandom sensitivities.
Let me elaborate.
A key feature of Victor’s character is his complete and utter inability to ask for help; no matter how dire the situation. Victor feels, that, despite and even because of his incompetence, that it is his cross and his cross alone to bear. Any inolvement from others, such as Clerval when he heads to England, is hesitant and highly discouraged, even when he wants nothing more than to partake in the company of his loved ones, after all he’s been through. While it is also heavily coloured by the anguished sentiment that borders on self-absorption so much of the time, I think it is also worthy to examine this too.
Victor’s tendency to indulge in self-pity and self-loathing is nigh, if not entirely, all-consuming; it pervades the narrative to a painful degree, particularly as it comes from his recollections; it is often exhausting to read through, and nigh unbearable if you already hold a disdane from his previous actions; but here’s the thing I think most people miss,
Victor is depressed.
I don’t mean “ooh, he’s so sad, leave him alone 🥺,“ I mean the guy is fucking depressed, stuck in a constant cycle of attempting to make do but failing, hating himself even more, letting it consume him because he at once feels like he deserves to be consumed and it’s the only thing he can do then and there to soothe to pain as shit gets worse and worse.
Victor Frankenstein’s internal monolgue is a prime example of deep-seated, far-gone depression, and I say this because I myself have experienced and do experience this. Depression is fucking soul-sucking, man; it turns you in on yourself, makes you feel entirely undeserving of love and compassion, leaves you feeling like you must, have to, deal with this entirely by yourself because it is your cross to bear.
Depression is so often self-flagellating and pointless, leaving the subject drained and often largely unable to experience the world outside their own miserable little bubble.
Victor is so wrapped up in this soul-sucking guilt, attempting to fight his own ineffectuality and in doing so only furthering his own ineffectuality, refusing to ask for help, that he ends up putting the ones he’s trying to protect in further danger as he tries to scramble a hodge-podge solution to the problem he created and couldn’t have even begun to forsee its consequences at twenty-two years old. It is a painful, painful example of how if only he reached out, if only he told someone, was honest, all of this could have been avoided, or at least mitigated.
And I think that’s the thing with Victor.
He’s a kind of banal evil-- If such continuous stumbling can even be considered so --He is an example of every day self-isolation and refusal to let anyone else in ballooning to such a degree it ends in distaster.
People are far, far more willing to forgive Adam for his transgressions-- And I say this as someone far more sympathetic to his plight, what with the absolute abandonment he faced at the hands of humanity --Despite their far more horrific consequences; in many ways, they’re attributed to Victor’s failing; which isn’t entirely untrue,
But I have to wonder, if alot of this also comes down to the fact that Victor’s wrongdoings are so human; leaving someone in your care behind; not speaking up in cases of injustice; being self-involved; again, the constant whining. In a way, it’s the sentiment that in stories a horrible person is often far more bearable than an annoying one.
That doesn’t even begin to touch on how much of the bemoaning might largely be and often is directly post-hoc regret colouring all his previous actions. This, above all else, is a cautionary tale to a fellow idealist in the hopes that Robert Walton doesn’t Fuck Up the way he did. Victor stresses his regret and his failings and his misery time and time again because he wants to protect Robert from a similar fate; a fate that ultimately ends in his death.
Victor Frankenstein is a study in frustration; in audience frustration, self-frustration, narrative frustration; it seeps into every corner of the story.
I am not trying to defend Victor Frankenstein as a person; he is flawed; and he’s meant to be flawed. Victor, at the end of the day, is a deconstruction of the Byronic hero-- Of Great and Powerful Men on the Fronteers of History™-- And most importantly, I think, a deconstruction he himself undergoes. Victor eventually alerts someone, a Genevan magistrate, is doubted just as he feared, and then runs off to take revenge into his own hands.
It takes the death of Elizabeth Lavenza to do so.
Victor is a flawed, miserable man, but not an evil one. That doesn’t mean he deserved to have his life crumble around him.
He could have done better. Should have done better.
And he knows this.
His entire arc is about how he knows this.
Victor dies knowing this.
Him being unlikable doesn’t make him a bad character. Him being unlikable is part of the character; and in a meaningful way.
God, I don’t know how to end this. I’ll probably come back and edit this many, many times.
I guess I’m just tired of people flattening characters just because they’re not particularly endearing.

Deku, Bakugo and Kirishima
Okay I wanna preface this post by saying first, this isn’t a post about Bakudeku (you’re itching to call me out, I feel it, but don’t do it) and while I will be mentioning the Kiribaku ship, it will be me mostly mentioning the FANS of this ship and the ideals around that ship. If this doesn’t apply to you, please gloss over it. This post was caused by once again, seeing SOME Kiribaku’s speak absolute garbage all over Tiktok. Wrong garbage mind you. Now let me start..
---------
When was it, that fans suddenly decided that for Kiribaku to be a ship, that suddenly people had to downplay Deku’s importance in Bakugo’s life. Yes, Bakugo use to bully Deku and he was wrong for it, he was a little fucking shithead for it. But that was in chapter one of the manga and season 1 episode 1 of the show. Where are we now? About to hit chapter 305 (leaks today whoo) and we’re about hit season 5. Things of changed, Bakugo has changed, and if you can pick up what Horikoshi is putting down, then you KNOW things have changed in their relationship.
Now what these Tiktoker Kiribaku’s like to claim is that Bakugo doesn’t care about Deku, doesn’t even LIKE Deku. That the only person Bakugo cares about is Kirishima... you can headcanon all you like that Kirishima is Bakugo’s most important person. You can 100% believe that and use it for your fanon content. But that is all it is, headcanon and fanon, because it isn’t true. And BECAUSE it isn’t true and is fanon, Do not come at people who believe CANON FACT and tell them they’re wrong and your headcanon is right.
Why does Bakugo’s relationship with Deku have to be diminished for Kiribaku’s ship to flourish? Why? When did that become a thing? because a LOT of people spread around this garbage like it’s fact.
Now i’m going to get into the major point these Tiktoker Kiribaku’s made, and what I think is the worst take i’ve ever heard. Ahem.
‘Kirishima cared about Bakugo the most which is why he went to Kamino to save him, and Bakugo cared about Kirishima the most which is why he took his hand’
I’m going to get into how WRONG this statement is.
The person who found out that Bakugo was going to be kidnapped was Deku. Deku found out during his fight with Muscular and after the fight was over, his first thought was to get Kota to safety so he could save Kacchan. He told the pussycat lady to alert everyone to Kacchan’s possible kidnapping, which is where Kirishima heard about it.
As you’d expect, Kirishima got upset and instantly wanted to go out and help protect Bakugo. Why? because he is his FRIEND. Canonly they’re not together so we are going forward with their platonic relationship, which is canon. He wanted to save his friends, as did others in the group, but he wanted to save him most. But he couldn’t. (Something we later learned was a trigger for Kirishima in season 4)
Because Deku was out on the field, he was able to go and try to save Bakugo. That boy ran around, in absolute pain to the point that some of the class commented on the fact he should be unconcious right now. But that didn’t matter because he wanted to save Bakugo. And he tried his hardest, despite being in pain and his arms not working, Bakugo gets taken, telling Deku ‘Not to come’. I like to believe he said that because Deku was injured and WOULD be killed following him, because Bakugo knows Deku would follow him into fire. Like Deku knows Bakugo best, Bakugo also knows Deku best (minus the whole looking down on him stuff, wtf Bakugo.) But because that was never established, we’ll leave that up to interpretation.
Something these Tiktokers used in their arguement was that Kirishima was the one who decided to save Bakugo, nobody else. Which.. just isn’t true at all. Another thing they said was DEKU DIDN’T PLAN TO SAVE HIM. Again, not true.
Lets go back to before Deku was in hospital and Bakugo was kidnapped. When Bakugo was gone, Deku SCREAMED in absolute DISPAIR (these tiktokers also commented that Deku hates Bakugo and all I can do is LOL, won’t even entertain that.) Deku was in such ABSOLUTE DISPAIR that he instantly went into shock. Shock, that he said, lasted for the 2 whole days in hospital, he couldn’t remember a thing. The only moment he remembers WHY he was in shock, was when the whole class were there and Todoroki told him about it.
Also at this point, while Deku is in shock, Kirishima and Todoroki had 2 whole days with a clear head to decide they were going to save Bakugo, consequences be damned.
What happened after remembering Kacchan was taken? Deku came out of his shock and burst into tears. He failed to save Kacchan and it HURT him. And then Kirishima mentions the rescue.. the rescue that he AND TODOROKI PLANNED. Do people not remember that while Kirishima had decided he was going to save Bakugo, that Todoroki ALSO had the same plan?? That if Kirishima hadn’t intended to save him, Todoroki would have mentioned the plan to Deku himself???
I 100% believe, as should ANYONE who knows Deku as a character and as someone who’s always cared about Bakugo despite him being an asshat, would have also come up with a plan to save Bakugo if he hadn’t been in hospital with damaged arms and in complete shock and disassociation.
I now want to point out a panel that people seem to forget:
Tumblr media
For people to believe Deku doesn’t care as much as Kirishima does about Bakugo, how is it your boy is saying the complete OPPOSITE statement???
Now skip forward to finding Bakugo and AFO. While Kirishima (and Todoroki) had decided they were going to rescue Bakugo, it was Deku who came up with the plan to get Bakugo out of there. Deku planned the best possible way to get Bakugo out of there and not damage his pride in the meantime. Deku could have been selfish and have reached out for Bakugo, because we all know Deku wanted to have been the one to reach out his hand. But he didn’t because Deku knows Bakugo best and didn’t want to possibly upset him.
Bakugo, who feels incredibly insecure when it comes to Deku, how do you think he’d have reacted if Deku saved him A SECOND TIME? First the sludge villian and now Kamino? I’d wager that Deku would expect any chance of reconsilliation between himself and Bakugo to have died that moment if he’d reached out to save him.
Lets be honest, Bakugo would have taken ANYONES hand to get out of there and i’ll explain why that is true in a moment.
Another thing people seem to forget is that Bakugo didn’t tell Kirishima he was the one who should hold his hand out. Bakugo didn’t tell Kirishima that he would only take his hand. No, DEKU said this. Deku who knows Bakugo better than ANYONE. He knew, because currently his and Bakugo’s relationship was rocky, that he couldn’t risk Bakugo’s pride getting in the way of the rescue. So DEKU chose Kirishima to reach out his hand, because Kirishima isn’t someone Bakugo feels threatened by. Deku is Bakugo’s biggest insecurity, him reaching out was a risk Deku wasn’t going to place over saving Bakugo.
Again, Bakugo didn’t mention ANY of this, he didn’t even know. So how anyone came to the conclusion that canonly, this meant that Bakugo believed Kirishima to be more important than anyone else I will never know.
And when they did save him, Horikoshi put in a VERY BIG CLUE that a lot of people gloss over.
Tumblr media
That teeth grit there was put INTENTIONALLY to show that even with Kirishima’s hand out.. he still didn’t want to take it, he didn’t want to have been saved. This is why I believe that he would have taken ANYONE’S hand. For anime fans, this teeth grit was cut out to instead focus on how close Shigaraki got to grabbing Bakugo.
Bakugo isn’t stupid, he knew he couldn’t stay. For one, he already mentioned that he was in All Mights way by being there. So he HAD NO CHOICE but to take Kirishima’s hand. And when he was saved, he addressed EVERYONE for saving him, not just Kirishima.
Now, for non manga readers, you will have to wait until season 5 to see Bakugo and Deku’s relationship flourish and I don’t want to spoil you. I’m so excited for people to see what their relationship is going to turn into and why it’s one of the most popular canon relationships in the show (and how it’s grown to be one of the biggest ships)
I will give you this though, to indicate just how much Deku means to Bakugo now without spoiling it for anyone. Anyone whos read the manga should know how Bakugo feels about Deku.
Tumblr media
For anyone who feels that Bakugo taking Kirishima’s hand indicated how important they were to each other, i’d like to hope you have the same energy for that cover for Vol.29 of the manga drawn by Horikoshi himself. If Bakugo went back, he would have taken Deku’s hand all along. At the river, in Kamino, during the fight. Bakugo wants to hold Deku’s hand now, he wants Deku’s friendship, he wants Deku, and that is platonically canon.
The last thing I want to say is that Kiribaku as a ship can still exist without ignoring how much Bakugo and Deku mean to each other. Kirishima and Bakugo are friends, maybe even best friends canonly (though honestly i’d argue that Kaminari is closer to Bakugo but that’s my personal opinion.)
Deku’s best friends are Iida and Uraraka, but Bakugo is still the person he loves and cares about the most.
Bakugo’s best friends are Kirishima and Kaminari, but Deku is still the person he loves and cares about the most.
Do you see people push Bakugo down to make IzuOcha work? no.
Wanna headcanon that Kirishima is Bakugo’s most important person? Go right ahead. But don’t push it on others as fact when it’s not.
If you have to come to other peoples spaces and force your headcanon on them and disminish the utterly beautiful relationship thats blossoming between Bakugo and Deku, then maybe you shouldn’t be in the fandom. Horikoshi wants you to know how important these boys are to each other and if you can’t see that, don’t comment publically because you sound dumb.
Ship Kiribaku, but do not attack others for things that you have WRONG.
Tldr; Stop erasing Bakugo and Deku’s canon relationship to big up your Kiribaku ship and don’t force that on other people.

Just Practice - Chapter 18
it’s finally over. here’s the last chapter. important notes at the end for those that are interested. thank you all so much for your support. it’s been a wild ride, and i’m glad i got to see it through to the end.
ao3 link
It was perhaps the first time that Annabeth had ever felt nervous standing in front of the Jackson residence. She shifted uneasily on her heels and wiped her palms on her jeans before knocking on the front door. Usually, she felt more at home here than anywhere else in the world, but she felt entitled to a little anxiety given the circumstances. Not long after, Sally opened the front door and showed her inside with a smile.
“Hi, honey. It’s been a while, huh?” Sally said.
Annabeth nodded and offered her a small smile. “Yeah. It has. Things have been pretty hectic lately.”
“Percy told me you were in the hospital for a while. Are you alright?” Sally said, closing the door behind her.
“Yeah, I just injured my leg at a meet,” Annabeth said.
“Oh no, what happened?” Sally asked, furrowing her brow.
“I, um, tore my ACL,” Annabeth mumbled. “It’s still recovering, but I can walk on my own now. It’ll be a while before I can start running again, though.”
“I am so sorry to hear that. I would have visited, but I’ve been out all month doing more of those goddamned book tours,” Sally huffed.
“Oh, it’s no problem,” Annabeth said. “I appreciate the thought though.”
There was a pause and Annabeth looked around the living room without meaning to. Sally gave her a smile and said, “If you’re looking for Percy, he’s upstairs in his room.”
Annabeth flushed and nodded. “Thanks. I’m gonna head on up then.”
“I’ll be taking Estelle out shopping, and Paul won’t be home until later today,” Sally informed her.
Annabeth blinked, somewhat confused. “Oh, alright. I’ll see you later then.”
“You should have plenty of time to yourselves,” Sally said, giving her a knowing look. “I’m guessing that you’ll need it judging by the sorry state that my son has been in the past few weeks.”
Annabeth’s face turned even redder and she nodded and made her way up to Percy’s room. She paused in front of his bedroom door and screwed her eyes and took a deep breath. Annabeth heard him in the shower, which diffused her nervousness before she stepped inside his room.
Percy’s bedroom hadn’t changed much, if at all, over the years. The room was sparsely decorated - almost nothing adorned the cream colored walls. There was still a full sized bed nestled against one corner of the room, draped with a fluffy blanket he hadn’t bothered to fold. Blue curtains framed a window overlooking the willow tree in his backyard, the one they used to climb when they were kids. On the other end of the room was an office chair, piled high with messy clothes, sitting in front of a well worn cherrywood desk. The desk was littered with stray homework papers, half-empty energy drinks, and a bobble head of some athlete Annabeth didn’t recognize.
Annabeth wandered over and looked at the four photos he had taped to the wall above the desk. One of them was with his mother at the beach in Montauk from back when he was a freshman. Another was one of the entire family at an amusement park. There was one with him and all of their friends sitting in front of a bonfire at Piper’s birthday party that past summer. And the final one was one of him with her, his hand thrown carelessly around her shoulder as she leaned into the crook of his neck, a contented smile on her face. The soft look on his face, like she had just hung the moon for him, brought a lump to her throat.
“Annabeth?”
Annabeth jumped back and turned to see Percy standing in the doorway, towel drying his hair. He was wearing an old swim team shirt from middle school and his penguin pajamas. The familiar scent of his body wash clung to his skin, unmasked by the cologne he usually wore. There was a careful expression on his face, like she had caught him unawares.
“H-Hey,” Annabeth said breathlessly.
“I, uh, wasn’t expecting you for another hour,” Percy said cautiously.
“Sorry,” Annabeth said, rocking on her heels. “Should I leave?”
“No, it’s fine,” Percy said quickly. “Why don’t you sit down?”
Annabeth nodded and sat on his bed. Percy rushed over to gather the clothes that had piled on top of the chair and hurriedly stuffed them in his closet. He hung the towel from his open window sill to dry and sat across from her in the office chair.
There was an uncharacteristically nervous look on his face, but it actually comforted Annabeth. She would have felt awkward if she was the only one feeling apprehensive.
“I, um, didn’t see you at school this week,” Annabeth said.
Percy rubbed the back of his neck. “Needed some time off. I haven’t been feeling very good.”
Guilt bubbled in the pit of Annabeth’s stomach. She knew that was her fault, but that he was too nice to tell her that.
She cleared her throat and said, “Sorry to hear that. Are you doing better now?”
Percy breathed a laugh and shrugged. “More or less.”
There was an awkward pause before Percy gestured to her leg. “How’s your knee?”
Annabeth glanced down at it and quickly looked back at him. “Oh, um, it’s fine. I had surgery done a few weeks back and it went well. I’ve started doing physical therapy now, but it’ll still be a while before I can start running again.”
“But you should make a full recovery, right?” Percy asked tentatively.
Annabeth nodded and stared down at her lap, playing with her fingers. “Yeah, the doctors said there shouldn’t be any issues since it was only a partial tear, but we won’t know for sure until I finish therapy.”
“That sounds like good news,” Percy said carefully.
Annabeth mustered a smile and said, “Yeah. About as good as I could hope for anyways.”
There was another brief pause and then Annabeth said, “I, um, also talked to the coach at Berkeley and told him about my injury.”
Percy’s leg bounced up and down. “And what did he say?”
“Well, he wasn’t happy about it,” Annabeth began. “But they’re not rescinding my scholarship.”
Percy made to move out of his seat and give her a hug, a grin splitting across his face, before he thought better of it and sat back down. A crushing sensation formed in the hollow of her chest as his grin waned into a sheepish smile.
“That’s wonderful, Annabeth,” Percy said softly. “I’m sure that’s a huge relief-”
“I’m sorry for how I acted at the hospital,” Annabeth blurted.
The smile slid off Percy’s face, but Annabeth powered through anyways. “You were only trying to help, and I lashed out at you for no good reason. That was awful of me, and I wanted to tell you how sorry I am for that.”
Percy nodded in a clipped manner and said, “Apology accepted.”
Annabeth was surprised that Percy hadn’t tried to downplay the whole thing by saying it wasn’t a big deal. A lump formed in her throat - her words must have cut deeper than she realized.
“It really hurt, hearing all that, but you had every right to say it,” Percy continued.
Annabeth shook her head and said, “No, I- I was just being cruel.”
He offered her a strained smile and shrugged helplessly. “You were still right though. About all of it. There’s no excuse for me not telling you about Kara, for hiding so much from you.”
Annabeth pursed her lips and resisted the urge to argue with him.
Percy hunched forward in his chair and ran his fingers through his hair violently. “I’ve been thinking about it non-stop, trying to figure out why I did that, but I still don’t really get it. I want to tell you, so badly, but there’s a part of me that just can’t. It’s really fucking frustrating and confusing.”
He paused and exhaled forcefully. “Honestly, the only thing it’s made me realize is how fucked up I am.”
The pain and bitterness in his voice tore up Annabeth inside. “That’s not true.”
“It is,” Percy said, shaking his head insistently. “I wish I could just show you somehow. Make you understand-”
“Percy, good person,” she stressed. “Maybe you can’t see it, but I can-”
“Well, you don’t actually know me,” Percy snapped.
Annabeth must have looked as devastated as she felt because Percy’s eyes immediately swelled with guilt and repentance.
“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean that,” he said quietly.
“No, you’re right,” Annabeth admitted shakily. “I don’t really know you. I thought I did, but I was wrong.”
“That’s not your fault,” Percy insisted. “I’m just- it’s fucking impossible for me to ever let anyone actually see me.”
Then who have I been seeing this entire time?
The thought hung heavily in her mind but she forced herself to ignore it. Still, she found it hard not to let despair swallow her whole. She couldn’t help thinking about how Reyna had said that at a certain point, you had to accept that there was really nothing that you could do. She was clearly out of her depth here. Honestly, she stood a snowball’s chance in hell of actually saying something helpful.
She sat there in silence and watched the conflicted look on Percy’s face. His lips were pressed in a thin line and his eyes shone with focused intensity, like he was at a swim meet. If this was only going to cause him so much pain, she never should have told him she wanted to talk. At the same time, she couldn’t help feeling like she needed to do something for him. Whatever he was holding inside was clearly eating at him. She couldn’t just leave it alone and act like it wasn’t her problem. Percy never would have done so if their roles were reversed.
Percy surprised her by punching his leg in frustration and releasing a shuddering exhale before he looked at her and spoke.
“No- No matter what, I can’t help thinking this all points back to Gabe.”
Annabeth furrowed her brow. “Your step-father?”
Percy nodded and said, “I’ve been thinking about him a lot lately. It’s weird, but he’s wrapped up in all this. I just know it.”
Annabeth dug her fingernails into her palms. Percy never talked about Gabe, but Annabeth had more than an inkling of what he did - how some days Percy came to school with a sullen look, wincing when he sat down, and gingerly probed parts of his body when he thought nobody was watching; days when he hardly smiled or even said a word to her and she would wordlessly slide him her homework at lunch to copy.
“You don’t have to talk about it if you don’t want to,” Annabeth said.
Despite what Piper said about needing to press Percy, Annabeth knew there were some wounds that were better left untouched.
Percy balled his hands into fists and shook his head. “No, I have to. Otherwise, I’ll lose you for good.”
Annabeth’s heart squeezed in her chest, so she took his hands in hers and said, “Look Percy, I don’t want to pressure you into doing something you’re uncomfortable with. It’s fine if there are things you can’t talk about. You have nothing to prove to me. No matter what, you’re still my best friend, and you’re never going to lose me. Okay?”
“Really?” Percy asked quietly.
The way his voice sounded, raw and bleeding, made self-loathing fester in the pit of her stomach.
“Yes, really,” Annabeth said tersely. “I’m so sorry that I forced you into a corner like this. I was wrong about what I said at the hospital. I did something terrible to you.”
“Don’t say that, Annabeth,” Percy said tightly. “It’s not your fault. At all. You’ve been nothing but endlessly patient with me. I- I’m just not strong enough.”
Annabeth shook her head. “You’re the strongest person I know, but you don’t have to do this all on your own. There’s probably not a whole lot that I can do to help, but at least I can help share your burden and listen.”
Percy was quiet for a minute before he looked at her with a hard gaze. “Are you sure about this? It’s not a very fun story to listen to.”
“Yes,” Annabeth said immediately.
“If it ever gets to be too much, let me know,” Percy said sternly.
Annabeth took his hand in hers and squeezed it. “Don’t worry about me. I’m here for you.”
Percy exhaled forcefully and nodded before staring down at his lap. A minute or two passed before he was ready to speak again, and Annabeth could see conflict and pain swirl in his eyes like whirlpools of emotion.
“He was nice at the start, you know?” Percy said quietly. “He wasn’t all that bad the first few months after they got married. Sometimes he’d get me some candy on his way home from work. Teach me how to throw a baseball. Normal stuff like that. But then, at some point, things changed. Still can’t figure out why. Like, was he just hiding how awful he was the entire time or did something change in him? Guess it doesn’t matter now.”
He paused for a moment and said, “The first time I remember him hitting her, I was eight years old. He was really tearing into me about getting in trouble at school, telling me how much of a fuck up I was, how I was a stupid kid who couldn’t do anything right, and mom defended me.”
“At some point, he got so pissed he chucked a plate at my head and barely missed. It shattered on the wall and gave me this,” Percy said, tugging down his shirt sleeve to reveal the crescent shaped scar on his shoulder.
Annabeth traced the scar with trembling fingers and tried to stomach the nausea and rage she felt brewing inside her.
“Mom went ballistic after that, but that just pissed him off,” Percy said slowly. “Gabe hit her so hard her head hit the wall and started bleeding. You can still see the dent downstairs in the living room. Then, he grabbed me by the hair and forced me to look at her, crumpled on the floor. I can still remember the stink of cheap cigarettes on his breath and him whispering in my ear, ‘This is all your fault, kid.’”
“Christ,” Annabeth whispered.
“Yeah, I know right,” Percy said, smiling wryly. “And that’s just one story - I have hundreds of them. Like, remember how I forgot my field trip form to the zoo in 5th grade?”
When Annabeth nodded, Percy said, “Well, they had to send me home because there weren’t any teachers at school that day. Mom was at work, so Gabe had to pick me up. He was super pissed that I made him miss his poker game, so he was bitching at me the entire ride home. At some point, I snapped and told him to fuck off. Next thing I know, he punches me in the stomach so hard that I puked all over the floor of his Camaro. Of course, that only made him even angrier, so he beat the shit out of me and made me clean up the mess.”
Annabeth tried to keep her voice steady. “Tell me you told somebody.”
Percy smiled humorlessly and said, “And who would I tell? My mom? The woman working three jobs, married to an abusive piece of shit that hits her, with a kid who only ever seems to fuck up at school and embarrass her? No, she had enough on her plate as it was. I couldn’t add more.”
“Then the teachers-”
“Annabeth, you remember how it was for me in school. The teachers hated me,” Percy said bitterly. “To them, I was just a trouble-maker. How could I turn to them? And besides, even if I did, what good would it do? Gabe would just deny it and take it out on me or mom later.”
Percy leaned back in his chair and sighed. “Eventually, I just got used to it. He was smart about it too. Always made sure my mom wasn’t around and that the wounds wouldn’t show anywhere someone might see. And over time, it just become something normal, and I got used to never telling someone about it.”
He paused for a moment and clutched at the fabric of his shirt, over his stomach. “Even telling you right now is like physically painful for me. Like my stomach is in knots and every cell in my body is telling me to run. A part of me keeps whispering, no matter how much I try and ignore it, that I’m not allowed to ask for help, that I- that I deserve this because it’s my fault.”
Annabeth took a sharp inhale and bit her quivering lower lip to keep from crying. She had always known Percy had had a troubled life, but she had never expected that it would be this horrific. He was the best person that she knew and he deserved so much more than this. It was profoundly unfair and tragic and wrong and she didn’t know how to fix it or if it was even possible to fix it.
“None of that was your fault, Percy,” Annabeth said tersely. “He was a sick, twisted piece of shit, and you shouldn’t believe a single word that came out of his mouth.”
“I’ve been telling myself that for the past five years, Annabeth, but there’s some part of me that doesn’t believe it,” Percy said softly. “That fucked up shit he did and said to me is still there, rattling around in my head, and I can’t make it stop.”
He balled his hands into fists. “He sort of beat into me that I was responsible for everything. It was always my fault because I was a bad kid or a fuck up. And he was kind of right too. Mom was having such a hard time back then and I never made things easier for her either, always getting into trouble at school. I tried to be a good kid. I really did. It just wasn’t ever good enough. I just kept letting people down and that hasn’t ever stopped.”
Before Annabeth could interject, he looked at her and said, “You asked me at the hospital why I never told you about Kara. The truth is that I hate myself for being so shitty to her. Like, I drove her into a corner and made her feel so insecure and alone that I forced her into cheating on me. I should’ve been a better boyfriend to her-”
“Percy, what Kara did was her own decision,” Annabeth interrupted. “Maybe you could have done a better job, but you can’t force someone to cheat on you. Kara even admitted that it was her fault and said she wanted to apologize to you for it.”
He stared at her for a few beats and a myriad of conflicted emotions flashed in his eyes before he shrugged noncommittally and turned away. Annabeth ground her teeth together and moved off the bed before she even realized what she was doing. She framed his face with her hands and forced him to look into her eyes.
“Listen to me, you are a good person,” Annabeth said tightly.
Percy averted his gaze. “I’m really not, Annabeth. I’m just trying to make up for the fact that I’m- well, me.”
“And I’m telling that it’s okay not to be perfect! Because that’s the standard you’re holding yourself to! We all hurt and let each other down, Percy. That’s fucking normal!” Annabeth fumed.
“What’s the fucking point if nothing ever changes?” Percy shouted, his voice cracking. “I try and try and try, and I still keep hurting the people I care about, and I’m just- I’m so fucking sick of it, Annabeth.”
“People hurt each other all the time, Percy, sometimes just by existing! You’re looking at a prime fucking example of that,” Annabeth shouted, jabbing a thumb at herself.
“Like, how many times have I hurt you through my own carelessness? And yeah, it breaks my heart sometimes knowing how awful I’ve been to you, but I’m trying to be better because you’re the most important person in the world to me and I don’t want to lose you. And I learned that from you! Because isn’t that what you’ve always done? Tried to be better?” she demanded.
At this, Percy was silent, and Annabeth sat back on the bed, sighing. “That’s what actually matters, Percy: the fact that you’ve never stopped trying. You don’t always have to nail yourself to the cross anytime you fail.”
There was a pause before Percy quietly said, “I- I don’t know how not to.”
“Well, it starts by acknowledging that it’s okay to put yourself first sometimes,” Annabeth said, softening her voice. “Your mom once told me that you would rather put yourself in pain to ease someone else’s suffering, that you feel responsible for how others feel. Like, I know that Gabe was the one that taught you that, but that’s really fucking unhealthy. You need to see a professional therapist or counselor to help you process all the shit he put you through and teach you a better way to handle it.”
“And what if that doesn’t work? What if it’s too late to help me?” Percy asked.
“Then we’ll figure it out when the time comes,” Annabeth said, repeating what he had told her at the hospital.
“I’m not sure I’m worth all that effort,” Percy said tightly.
“Well, I’m your best friend and I think you’re the sweetest, kindest boy there ever was and that you’re worth the whole world,” Annabeth said.
She thought he would argue with her again, but she was surprised when Percy scrunched up his face and looked away from her, blinking back tears. He rubbed at his eyes with the back of his hand and nodded with a sniffle. Her heart welled up inside her chest and she felt a sense of fond exasperation rush through her, making her smile to herself.
Oh, you dumb, stupid boy.
“Thank you,” Percy mumbled.
Annabeth shook her head, even though he couldn’t see her. “There’s nothing to thank me for.”
It was a while before he looked at her again, and when he did, he looked up at her shyly through his stupidly long eyelashes.
“D-Did you mean what you said in the hospital?” he whispered.
“Hmm?”
Percy’s face turned a gentle shade of vermilion. “Um, about being in love with me?”
Annabeth’s face turned serious. “Yes. I should have chosen a better time, but I meant it. One hundred percent.”
“Oh.”
She couldn’t help the way her lips curled upwards. “That’s all you have to say to me? ‘Oh’?”
Percy’s face turned even redder. “Um, I’ve been dreaming about this moment for like seven years, so you’ll have to forgive me for the fact that my brain is kind of fried right now.”
Annabeth raised an eyebrow and tried not to look smug. “Seven years, huh? That is a long time to hold your peace.”
“In my defense, you always hated it when people said anything about us dating, so I tried to kill off that part of myself and fully commit to just being friends,” Percy said.
“I’m sorry about that,” Annabeth said seriously. “I must have hurt you a lot.”
“It was painful,” Percy admitted. “But I was happy enough staying by your side.”
“The whole fake dating thing was super tone deaf then on my part, huh?” Annabeth said quietly.
“I should have refused, but I couldn’t help myself,” Percy said, grimacing. “I wanted to pretend, even if it was just for a little while, that you actually liked me back. It was a pretty bad idea, but I even tried dropping a bunch of hints since I couldn’t tell you how I felt, in the hopes that it might change something, I don’t know.”
“Well, it wasn’t all bad,” Annabeth said. “It got me to realize a whole bunch of things. Without that whole fiasco, I don’t think we’d be where we are right now.”
Percy cleared his throat and said, “And where is that exactly?”
Annabeth sat up straighter and folded her hands on her lap. “Well, for starters, I’d like to start dating you. For real this time.”
“Are you sure?” Percy asked, furrowing his brow. “We’ll have to be long distance once the fall rolls around.”
“I’m sure,” Annabeth said firmly. “Besides, we’ll be in the same state.”
“Would be nice if we were closer instead of on opposite ends,” Percy said, sighing.
Annabeth shrugged and said, “It’s a five hour and forty-two minute drive, so not all bad.”
“And you know that off the top of your head?” Percy asked, grinning.
“I, um, checked on Google maps.”
Percy gave her a smarmy look and raised an eyebrow. “Hmm, so you came here today planning expecting to ask me out, huh?”
Annabeth shoved him and bit back a smile. “I checked back in December, you jerk.”
Percy made a show of wincing and said, “Alright, alright, take it easy.”
There was a pause before Annabeth folded her arms over her chest and said, “You still haven’t properly answered me, by the way.”
“I thought it went without saying that I would say yes,” Percy said, blinking.
Annabeth’s face turned a little pink. “I- I still want to hear you say it.”
Percy ducked his chin for a moment and looked at her shyly. “Yes, I would love to go out with you.”
Her heart beat a little faster in her chest and exhilaration washed through her. “Nice.”
Percy blinked for a moment and nodded sagaciously. “Yes, nice.”
Annabeth shoved him again and ended up tackling him off his chair and fell on the floor with him. He wrapped an arm around her and laughed, and the sound reverberated through his skin and warmed her right through her bones. They lay like that for a while, tangled in each other, while he played with her hair.
Eventually, she looked up at him and cleared her throat. “So what happens next?”
Percy raised an eyebrow. “Why are you asking me?”
“You’re the one with all the dating experience,” Annabeth protested hotly.
Percy tried for a shrug and said, “Beats me. We could go get some celebratory shakes at Martha’s maybe?”
When Annabeth was quiet, he looked down at her and said, “Did you have something else in mind?”
“Well, um, if you were open to it, I would like to kiss you now,” Annabeth mumbled.
A beat passed before Percy bit back an enormous grin. “Sounds agreeable to me.”
“Don’t make me deck you again,” Annabeth warned.
“Alright, you absolute terror.”
“Dullard.”
“Always so mean, Chase.”
“Shut up, Jackson.”
“Are we gonna kiss or what?”
“You’re supposed to be the one leading, dumbass. I’ve never done this before, remember?”
“Okay well, for starters, don’t bash your nose into mine like that.”
“Oh my god, I actually hate you.”
“What you have a problem with the way I’m ‘leading’?”
“Just shut up and kiss me, you idiot.”
“Alright, no need to get so testy.”
....
“Okay?”
“U-Um, yeah. Could we, uh, do it again? You know, just for practice?”
“Sure. Just for practice.”
“You’re insufferable.”
“Just so you know: it’s too late for take backs.”
“Too late?”
“Yeah, way too late.”
....
“I love you.”
“I know. Now, can we go back to the kissing, please?”
....
“You’re not gonna break my heart, are you, Annabeth Chase?”
“I won’t.”
....
“And I love you too.”
