Always happy to spread the roleswap gospel. I think I always enjoy it because it lets me separate who a character truly is from their place in the story, and it gives you a lot of flexibility in creating a new character who is still grounded in their setting. A lot of AUs change the setting without actually changing the character - and oftentimes it's honestly just taking a character and chopping off parts of them until they fit in a specific handful of roles - but a roleswap demands that you look at how different circumstances change a character. I find that when I'm not doing AUs like that, I'm doing AUs where I'm basically doing that and offering no justification or explanation for it. Which confuses people. Look, guys, you welcomed yourself to my twisted mind when you clicked on the link, just go along with the ride.

I think also The Magnus Archives was uniquely suited for really good roleswaps, because that mostly entails changing which Entity a character is affiliated with. And that's just taking the same character and magnifying a specific aspect of who they are, looking at them from a different perspective. I'm glad you're giving it a shot, 'cause it is also just a good writing exercise in general for figuring out the innate vs situational characteristics of a character.

Re: role rotations - yes, that's definitely what I'm doing with the Naruto roleswap thing! Naruto works in groups of 3, so by nature you're shuffling character traits to the left. This actually becomes difficult when one of these characters has nothing going on, so it's actually difficult as fuck to figure out, but it lets me get pretty creative.

2. Did you reread anything? What?

I did! Both Reaper Man and Soul Music by Terry Pratchett. I picked up the first Discworld book in high school and loved it, but bounced hard off the second, and only learned after I married my husband that you can't really read them in order. I had started to read the Death books way back in the early 2010s, but ended up switching from physical book to kindle and I didn't want to rebuy our already extensive collection digitally...I gave in a few years ago and have been doing a huge read of the whole series on kindle. Now that both Night Watch and Witches are done, it was finally time for the Death novels 🤣 Soul Magic was the last one a read way back in like 2010/2011, so it's all new from here on out

11. What was your favorite book that has been out for a while, but you just now read?

Probably The Brightest Fell by Seanan McGuire! I have been a Toby Daye fan for a while, but I've gotten SUPER behind on keeping up with ongoing series. This one kicks off what's sure to be a real tangled knot of secrets and intrigue, so I can't wait until I get to Night & Silence (hopefully sometime this year)

17. Did any books surprise you with how good they were?

I'm a recent convert to the Light Novel/Webnovel scene, and this year I picked up both Raven of the Inner Palace and Under the Oak Tree, and both of them have really blown me away quality-wise. Volume 5 of Under the Oak Tree nearly had me crying in public.
