I NEED TO SPEAK ABOUT THE DEVIL'S CARNIVAL

okay, hi. resident repo/devil's carnival autistic here. within the movies are lots of flaws and lots of incredible qualities, but i want to talk about in all my dreams i drown.

if you're not familiar with the devil's carnival, or for some reason, you are, but you are not with in all my dreams i drown, this is the song:

(the song is also featured in the credit scene of the first tdc movie.)

okay, here are my two cents.

i'm here posting to dissect the song. among the video essays i've seen, people aren't entirely sure what the purpose of this song is. it isn't actually in the movie, and it's hard to see where it would fit if it were. but to me, it makes perfect sense.

so, to be clear, this is my interpretation. it's entirely possible that it was written to be pure nonsense. but this is me, in typical me fashion, reading too deep into it.

so, first thing's first. this is tamara's song. therefore, it makes sense to me that it would be a metaphor for tamara's life.

first things first, the video/scene.

it's been seen quite clearly by most people as 'rapey'. and i think so too. HOWEVER, to me, it's not about lucifer, it's a metaphor regarding tamara's (ex?) boyfriend who is her cause of death, and her damning 'offense'. to me, the line 'in all my dreams i drown' regards her relationships with her abusive boyfriend, and with scorpion, but the performance is between her and lucifer. why? because, it's a metaphor.

they are portraying her abusive, murderer, rapist boyfriend as the devil.

which is so, so, SO genius.

the other thing i'd like to point out about the song is the line "eddie's in the water, headed to the mouth of hell," who is eddie? i'm wondering if it's the boyfriend.

okay that was way more cents than two, but there's my thoughtdump. maybe i'm totally wrong and this is all just terrance wanting to be in bed on camera with a pretty girl, but i really, really hope that i'm right, and it was written this way with genuine pursuit of a well executed metaphor.

I DO NOT SUPPORT TERRANCE ZDUNICH. i admire him and hold him dear as an artist, but i certainly recognize his flaws and atrocities and.. all his junk. i just like his work.

Had the most fascinating dream. It was an alternate version of Alleluia! The Devil's Carnival that had never been released. But only four scenes of the movie.

The first one had seemingly nothing to do with it?

It was a girl rehearsing for some school presentation. The rest of her family was in the room with her, as an audience. Through some dialogue we learn that the girl is trans and her presentation is about acceptance and stuff. Her family is supportive, if a bit sick of watching the rehearsal for the 100th time.

Then, actually focusing on heaven, The Agent had adopted one of the souls Lucifer has been sending back to heaven. He's just some guy, wearing tattered clothes and with a body full of stitches, as if he had been sewn together from multiple pieces. It's not entirely a Frankenstein situation, as it's established that when the train he was sent in crashed, he got torn to pieces; the working horses put him back together as well as they could, though it's implied that there may or may not have been pieces of someone else sewn there by accident.

Anyway, The Agent's adopted soul is super, super hungry, as if he hadn't eaten in forever, so The Agent is feeding him pieces of himself. Literally just nibbling and plucking pieces of flesh off his arms to feed this guy (who I guess I'll just call The Redeemed for simplicity?).

God grows worried about how The Agent seems to have been slow at work, and then jealous when He notices that The Agent is spending way too much time with The Redeemed, even when doing what holy tasks He commands, so He calls The Agent to His office.

When The Agent comes, he brings The Redeemed with him, and when he feeds The Redeemed in front of God, He grows outraged, and declares The Agent will be punished for, uh... Apparently putting too much of the love he should have for his master on The Redeemed, which He sees as an unwelcome abomination. It is unclear why God does not use The Translators on the stitched up guy.

The next scene could have been musical, I'm not sure.

The Agent is half naked in front of a grand bed, fearful looking from side to side as other half naked men and women wearing only white pants approach him, carrying with their arms raised above their heads, long golden tubes, opened at the top. They corner The Agent against the bed and tilt the tubes, and boiling oil pours down, burning him.

As The Agent lies on the bed, legs dangling over one side, recovering from the pain, God comes (but he looks like The Librarian for some reason?). God comes wearing what I can only call wine-colored lingerie: long gloves that reach his elbows, thigh high socks, a very short miniskirt, and something like a binder on his chest. He climbs onto the bed, then walks on His knees until He's positioned right above The Agent, them lowers himself in The Agent's face.

The Redeemed had been forced to watch everything and is terrified and confused. God calls him, tells him to get closer, that the punishment and His love are also for him. As The Redeemed is brought close by the head for a kiss, an alarm sounds, and The Publicist's voice sounds calling for attention through the speakers. The punishment is interrupted.

But I don't know what was the alarm about, because we go back to Earth.

The girl arrived at the open stage where she'll do her presentation. After placing a sign for reserving some of the seats for the rest of her family, she stands to one side with her younger brother and her grandfather. She's worried the rest of the family won't come after seeing the presentation so many times at home already, but she's also excited as, starting the next day, she'd stop wearing pants and start wearing skirts. Her brother is confused as to why she wouldn't want to wear pants, specially with the weather getting colder, but the grandfather interrupts to avoid the same sibling fight that had repeated every time he made that comment before.

... and that's it. Then I woke up. I admit curiosity as to wherever that movie could've gone.
