"101st CEAS Anniversary"
Issue #10 by Allana Andrea Malto & Nicole Ericka Rivera
Tumblr media
After several months of preparation, the 101st year of the CEAS department was finally commemorated on February 3-4, 2023 at National University Manila. It was a 2-day of fun and CEASzling celebration where students of the CEAS department enjoyed all the exciting and mind-blowing events. The activities that were prepared showcased various talents and skills which has shown the competitive side of the students where they showed their sporty side in Basketball, Volleyball, and Table Tennis, their wittiness competing in Spelling Bhie and Chess, their amazing talents in Zumba Work Out, and with their courage and confidence joining the battle of minds in the very first debate competition in CEAS Department.
One of the highlights of the CEAS Week was the Battle of Minds held at National University Manila Function and Social Hall. The event started with Debate Orientation and Briefing on the Day 1 of the CEAS week from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM while the official elimination of the competition started at 1:00 PM and ended at 5:00 PM. The event was joined by 3 competitive teams who participated in the first-ever CEAS debate competition; the team of Adrian Olfindo, Patrice Villaruz, and Joshua Tesoro; the team of Lovely Joy Nedic, Nathan Antazo, and Justine Malaborbor; and the team of Jannah Martos, Vhon Ventura, and Ceejay Bebis.
The event progressed to the first two team debaters who conquered the stage with confidence and filled the room with tension, while students that were watching felt the excitement. When their topic was being announced, the captain of each team picked their side to begin the first debate topic, "Resolve that ROTC be made mandatory for college students'', where the team of Joshua had the affirmative side while the other hand, the team of Justine opposed it as they had picked the negative side. The debaters were given 30 minutes to prepare their topic speech and argument as CEASSC Vice President, Feejay Nario, introduced the panel of judges: Mr. Leeroi Christian Rubio, Ms. Susan Gopez, and Mr. Daniel Francisco Del Rosario, before finally welcoming all the students who attended the CEAS debate competition.
The first debate topic was fueled by a heated exchange of speeches and rebuttals between the two debate teams, especially with the first two speakers, Patrice and Lovely. Since Patrice's argument goes around how ROTC is a necessity that focuses on emergency response rather than military preparedness, Lovely suggested that the government should focus more on improving the education system. She also put an emphasis on defending academic freedom, firmly laying out Article 3 of The 1987 Constitution Of The Republic Of The Philippines, because she believes that ROTC as a necessity is out of context and mandating it would take the students’ freedom.
The first topic exchange was ended by Justine who stated that “learning cannot take place where terror is present,” followed by her closing remarks where she mentioned the Mark Welson Chua case in 2001 (an ROTC cadet at the University of Sto. Tomas (UST) found lifeless in Pasig River) and the PUP hazing incident last 2014.
Tumblr media
The second topic, “Resolve that the government bans schools and universities (public and private) from mandating students on wearing gender-normative uniforms,” was then introduced. Justine’s team chose the affirmative side, while Vhon’s team decided to negate the topic. The topic advanced with Lovely’s steadfast speech about schools and universities that mandates gender-normative uniform, she stated that it denies the students the opportunity to freely express themselves. “No person shall be deprived,” Lovely spoke, but Jannah countered it saying that it would be too harsh and hasty to make. It could also be ineffective and could be harmful, which is why Jannah tried to propose an alternative and appropriate solution. She stated that educating the youth about inclusivity (about LGBT and SOGIE in general) would be for the greater good rather than a band-aid solution that allows cross-dressing.
However, Nathan’s speech consistently defended his team’s side. “[It is] a stepping stone for the Philippines,” the speaker said, but it was countered in the rebuttal where Ceejay asked him “What is the sense of allowing students to cross-dress if it cannot be allowed in the corporate world?” This argument ignited and was intensified by Vhon’s speech where he clearly stated his reasons why his team is not in favor of the government banning schools and universities from mandating students on wearing gender-normative uniforms. First, the SOGIE Bill is still on house reading. Second, most corporate companies do not allow cross-dressing because they must have a proper representation of self and the company. Vhon continued his speech by talking about if schools and universities, especially universities that are supposedly training students of the corporate world, allow gender-normative attire, it would easily defeat the purpose of training students to be an actual professional.
Tumblr media
The rebuttal between the last two speakers was heated but both sides were unbelievably calm and enjoying their exchange of rebuts. In the closing remarks, Justine did not waste any time and restated her team’s claim to let the students express themselves by banning schools and universities from mandating students on wearing gender-normative uniforms. Whereas Vhon sticks with his team’s claims and states, “The school’s purpose is to prepare the students [for the] corporate or professional field.”
The first day of the Debate Elimination ended with a banged where students were clung and left hanging to the results of the elimination, eager to find out who will move forward to the final round on the 2nd day of the competition as it was the scheduled day for the announcement of who among the three competitive teams will proceed to the finals round of the competition. The three teams gave an amazing and knowledgeable debate that made all the students who watched the competition applaud loudly as they can no longer wait for the final round to give another heated but meaningful debate. Though the three of them already won in the heart of the students, only two of the debaters can proceed to claim the title of champion of the first-ever CEAS debate competition. But just before the final round happened on the scheduled date, the College of Education, Arts, and Sciences made an announcement that there will be no more debate for the 2nd day of CEAS Week, February 04, 2023.
The cancellation of the debate championship was due to a very short-noticed cancellation of one team this morning. The team was unable to participate in the championship round due to the illness of one of its members. Additionally, the other team expressed their intention to forfeit their participation on the evening of February 3, leaving only one team to attend. The event carries on with the announcement of winners for all the events to conclude the 2-day celebration of our department. As a result of this sudden and unexpected turn of events, the organizers of the debate championship had no other choice but to cancel the event. It was a difficult decision for the organizer, but they felt it was necessary in order to ensure the safety and well-being of the participants. The organizers of the debate championship would like to thank all the teams and participants for their enthusiasm and commitment to the event. They hope to be able to organize a successful debate championship in the future.
The CEAS 101st anniversary was surely a success as the students both enjoyed and learned something meaningful that they will treasure. All the efforts that were made were acknowledged, not only by all the participants but also by those students who helped make the events happen. They ensured that the next events will be even more interactive and successful.

a continuation of when Esther catches Joel cheating on Mei, where Mei finally leaves him for good and what happens after that 😈
Esther frowns when she hears a loud banging on the front door, slipping out of bed and out of her room to see what's going on.
It's late, and rare that anyone ever comes knocking past midnight.
She follows her mother down the stairs and waits halfway down, as Midge opens the door, letting Mei in.
"Mei?"
"I finally saw her tonight," Mei babbles as they head into the cozy TV room just off the front hall. Esther descends a little more, but stays back. "Allana. I was at the club and there she was, and do you know who she looked like?"
Midge says nothing, merely pulling her dressing gown tighter around herself.
"You," Mei tells her without being prompted. "Allana looks like you! Fifteen years ago. When I met you. Joel is fucking your younger doppelganger. And I don't know why I'm surprised. He never got over you. He settled for me because he knew you couldn't forgive him. And then Lenny happened and you got over him, and Joel..Joel found another you. White. Blue-eyed. Brunette. Skinny. She's you."
"I'm so sorry, Mei," Midge says gently.
"You tried to warn me that he was a mess and I thought you were just jealous," Mei admits. "Because I was marrying your ex-husband, and you were struggling to make things work with a drug addict and I thought 'my life must look so good to her right now. I have what she wants.' But no. You really were trying to make sure I knew what I was getting into."
Midge takes a breath. "Joel is complicated. After we split up, he never really figured out how to live with the way things turned out."
"I can't go back," Mei mutters. "I can't. I can't do this anymore. I can't pretend like it's not happening."
Midge nods. "The guestroom has a great mattress and good air flow. You'll stay here tonight and then figure out what to do in the morning."
Esther watches for another moment as the two women who are both her mother. The tears in Mei’s eyes and the sympathy in Mama's, and then she quietly heads back up to bed.

PLAYING WITH THE BOYS
PART 13; ONE OF LIFES SIMPLE JOYS
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Warnings: funerals, mentions of death, graveyards, mentions of cancer, widows,
Summary: robin hadn't expected to receive the news that Iceman had died and she hadn't realised how difficult his funeral was going to he.
Wordcount: 2.5k
Tumblr media
It was warm as Robin stood at the funeral, her eyes trained on the coffin in front of her. She stood there in her knee length black dress, unable to even comprehend  the fact that Iceman was dead.
She had known Tom Kazansky from the moment she had been because her father, callsign ‘Dollar’, had been best friends with Iceman and his RIO Slider. She kept looking over at his family where his wife, his older children and a few young grandchildren were.
He had been there for her when Allana had died because he was on the mission with her when it had happened. She remembered collapsing into the older man's arms in the hospital as she lay there with her broken leg, the official news of Allana's death coming in.
The funeral made her think of Allanas as well. It had been quiet as she didn't have many friends but her large family stood there sobbing as they laid the flag over her empty coffin because she'd been cremated.
They had fired the guns into the air and they all watched in silence as they lowered the grave into the ground. The cemetery was always eerie, full of people who had laid their lives down for this country without a second thought. They had families and friends and parents and it sent a chill down her spine as she thought about it.
Then she looked over to where the military personnel were standing. There was an array of the and in the crowd she saw her father, her grandfather, Maverick and Bradley. They all were standing straight in their military garbs and with that perfect posture that she knew all too well.
When they got to the wake, Bradley mingled around, talking to a few old friends and paying his condolences to Mrs Kazansky before he spotted Robin.
She was leant up against the wall in the back, always more of a wallflower than a big social person. He walked over, standing next to her, neither of them saying anything for a minute.
“I hate military funerals,” she whispered, eyes trained down at the bottom of her glass. She had told herself she wouldn't drink too much but now she was on her second glass of whiskey.
“Because of Allana?” he asked and she nodded, her breath hitching in her throat.
“They're just depressing you know,” Robin sighed, looking up at him. She didn't want to go into the fact that technically although she had the official ceremony for Allana, the girl had opted to be cremated.
He smiled, it was half hearted, not completely real and she wasn't expecting it to be as they stood at the wake, “Yeah, they are pretty sad,”
It was like that for a minute, silent as they both just basked in each other's company, grateful that they were both alive and standing there today.
He leaned in, his hand brushing a stray piece of hair behind her ear, his eyes darting down to her mouth for a second.
“Dad,” she said, pushing Bradley away from her as she saw her father across the hall. He was also in his military dress and as he turned to his daughter, his sad expression turned into one of joy.
They hadn't seen one another for months because he had been deployed elsewhere and a funeral wasn't the most appropriate time for a family reunion but she was glad to see him again.
He pulled his daughter in for a hug, looking over her shoulder at Bradley. He didn't know that they had dated once upon a time, he just knew that they were close friends back in the day during both the naval academy and their run at top gun.
Then her grandfather walked over. Admiral Benjamin was an older man with a walking stick who had been retired for a very long time now but he still managed to make it to Ice Man's funeral. He had actually been friends with Iceman’s father who was also in the military.
“Robin,” he said, his voice croaky as he pulled the girl into a hug, the girl hugging her grandfather. She had seen him a few months back during thanksgiving but he always said she looked older every time.
The two men both turned to see Bradley standing awkwardly near her and he smiled, back automatically straightening in the presence of higher ranked military officers.
“Admiral Benjamin, Admiral Scott,” he said, shaking her fathers hand and her grandfather's hand. The two men reciprocated eagerly, clearly not having noticed the connection between Robin and Bradley.
“It's nice to see you again Lieutenant Bradshaw, Captain Mitchell said you've been doing really well for this top secret mission,” her father said.
They started to talk and it was easy, for a second, robin could imagine family dinners with her military family. Thanksgivings when they all were not deployed. It seemed like a dream.
She saw Mrs Kazansky across the room, “I'll be back in a minute Brad,” she said before waving goodbye to her father and grandfather and making her way across the room, leaving him to talk to her family and the way that they got on well made a cosy feeling spread through her body.
“Mrs Kazansky,” she said and the woman turned around, a sad smile on her face as she saw Robin.
“Ah, Robin Benjamin, how are you?” she said, pulling the girl in for a quick hug, the woman was a bug hugger.
“Good, I should be asking you that question. How are you?” she asked and the woman just gave her another sad smile, clearly trying not to get emotional.
“It's going to get better. We all knew the cancer could come back and only found out a few months ago, we didn’t think it would get so worse so quick,” she explained, “But don't you worry about me dear,”
Robin wished she was as optimistic as she was. The woman had just lost her husband and she was sure that the pain was going to lessen over time. She smiled at the sentiment.
“If you need me, I still work at Top Gun so you can come visit anytime,” she said.
“Thank you dear, but right now, i think there's a handsome naval officer with a moustache staring at you that you might want to talk to,” she said and robin turned around to see Bradley staring before he averted his eyes, “Have fun whilst you're young,”
she smiled, saying goodbye to her before walking ober, “You want to get some fresh air?” he asked and she nodded, walking out with him.
It was getting cold as the sun began to set and the two of them both stood outside the room, still looking at the cemetery in front of them.
“I don't remember my dad's funeral,” he said as they stared out at the cemetery.
Robin turned to look at him. She was glad that he felt comfortable enough to open up to her now. She slipped her hand into his as they looked out at the graveyard.
“My mum said it was nice, that Mav did a speech and Iceman was there too, so was your dad,” he explained, head turning to look at her.
“Your dads buried here isn't he?” she asked and he nodded, “We can go visit if you want,”
No girl that he had ever dated had wanted to go see his fathers grave. It was the closest thing to meeting him that they could do and she hadn't even been able to meet Carol either.
But now, standing in front of her, he knew that he was in love as she said those words. He nodded, squeezing her hand in his. He couldn't take his eyes off of her as he began to lead her there, feet knowing the path like muscle memory.
“Is Allana here?” he asked and she shook her head.
“Her family has one of those creepy tombs, what are they called? Mausoleums? Plus, she wanted to be cremated so her ashes are in Michigan,” she explained as they weaved the lines of graves.
She hadn't visited in a while. Maybe once this mission was over and if both her and Bradley came back alive she’d take him there, the last time he had seen Allana was when they graduated from Top Gun.
As they stood in silence, Robin didn't want to think about the way that Carol felt after the funeral having lost her husband and she didn't want to think about the fact that this could be her after the mission, standing by a grave, hoping that somehow the person you loved more than anybody else in the world would come back.
For now, she just wanted to hold him close and just think about how lucky she was to be able to reconcile with the man of her dreams and just be with him.
“I'm going to make it back home you know, after the mission,” he said almost like he had heard her thoughts from how loud she was projecting them. Robin nodded, looking up into his brown eyes.
“I know,” she said, her voice slightly shaky and he knew that she didn't really believe that.
“I'm going to make it back home,” he repeated, this time it wasnt a reassurance, it was a promise, “You're not going to any more funerals any time soon,”
She leant her head on his shoulder, both of them basking in the comfortable silence as he leant his head on top of hers.
“My parents would have loved you,” he said, eyes trained on the grave of his father, “My dad would have loved your singing voice and that cheeky smile. My mum would have loved your sarcasm and your caring nature,”
Tears welled up in her eyes as he talked about her like that. She would have loved to have been able to meet his parents, they seemed like the most wonderful people who were always so full of life. It seemed a crime that they were ripped apart so soon and Carol had to spend so much time without him.
“I would have loved to have met them, they sound amazing, and they raised a brilliant son,” Robin said and this time, it was time for Bradley to feel emotional, “I would have told them
“I haven't always treated you right sweetheart,” he said, looking down at her, fingers hooking underneath her chin.
She smiled, “Well you're making it up for it now aren't you,” she said and he pulled her up for a chaste kiss under the setting sun.
She pulled away, her eyes still closed but when they fluttered open, they met his, “I feel like I shouldn't be kissing you in front of your fathers grave,” she said with that cheeky smile that he adorned so much.
He laughed and she hadn't heard him laugh since they got the news last night that Iceman had died, “I think dad would be proud i found such a perfect woman,” he said, causing a blush to spread over her cheeks.
It was silent for a minte as they stared at one another, just taking in their rescene, ignoring the worries of everything else going on and just cherishing the time that they had together.
“You know, I really like the suit, lieutenant,” she said with a smirk, one hand resting on his chest as she fiddled with the medals that were pinned to it.
She had considered wearing her military outfit but decided against it seeing as she wasn't a naval officer anymore, she just worked for them.
“Why don't you show me how much you like it?” he said, a smirk evident on his face.
She scoffed, “You wish,”
“Come on, just say it, say please Lieutenant Bradshaw, take me to bed,” his voice was husky and low, teasing but he knew exactly what he was doing to her.
Robin shook her head, laughing at him, “There's no way you expect me to say that, this is a funeral Lieutenant,” she said, using his title in a mocking way.
“Well we have to go home anyway,” he said, looking down at his watch and the way that he said ‘we’ made butterflies appear in her stomach at the sentiments, “Just ask, and we’ll go right now,”
She smirked and he thought hed gotten his way but she just stood up on her tiptoes, mouth against her ear as she whispered to him, “Is that what you wanted, sir?” she asked, a teasing tone to her voice.
“You little minx,” he said, his voice breathy as he looked down at her, eyes dark, “I can't believe you said that in the presence of my late father,”
She chuckled, watching as his hand came to be pressed against her lower back, pulling her closer to him, “Im sorry sir, i thought you wanted me to say please,” she said before sliding out of his grasp, giggling lightly as she grabbed his wrist, “I think it's time we tell Mrs Kasansky that it's time to excuse ourselves,”
“Yes ma’am,” he said, following after her. He would have followed her anywhere and she knew it, she knew she had him wrapped around her finger and she loved it. She loved him.
Back near the sight of the wake, Pete looked over at the two, Robin with her hand in his, the two walking away with smiles on their faces and even in the distance, he knew that they had just visited Goose’s grave.
Tears burned at the back of the older man's eyes as he thought about his best friend. Bradley reminded Pete of him every day that he saw him and now, with the way the two of them were standing, Robin and Bradley reminded him of Carol and Goose.
He always hoped that he had done the right thing trying to be a second father to Bradley and he knew he had to follow Carol's wishes to try and stop him from going to the naval academy and making the same mistake as Goose. He had always regretted the decision a bit because it had ruined their relationship so much but now, as he watched the couple standing in the distance, he thought that he must have done something right.
Penny walked up to stand next to him, her hand reaching down for his and he easily interlocked their fingers, eyes trained on the two adults in the difference.
“We did good with them didn't we?” she questioned, realising that they had managed to get the two back together after so long apart.
“Goose and Carol would have loved her,” he stated.
Penny had known Goose from when they had been stationed at the same place her father had been stationed and she had briefly met Carol and the baby boy who grew up to be Bradley. That was when she met Pete for the first time and like her daughter, she had made the same mistake of letting them let her go.
“Her dad loves him, my dad does too,” Penny added and the two just stood there, watching as the sun set over the cemetery.

“how many rooms are there in this building?” he muttered to himself, looking up and down the hall and wondering how this compared to many of the different places that they had grown up through out the galaxy. trying to mentally retrace his steps to where he’d come from, he moved back to the door he believed to be his, opening it and quickly finding out it wasn’t. “oh, kriff. sorry. i’m still figuring out where things are, didn’t mean to intrude.” / @tragcdysewn

hopeless fountain kingdom: Chapter 2. A Kingdom by the Sea
Inspired by @kylorenvevo‘s saga.
Allana Djo is on the edge of nineteen and the entire Hapes Consortium is starting to take notice. But the Chume’da has no interest in the young men the nobles are throwing at her feet. Since her last heartbreak at seventeen, Allana has filled her time with treasure-hunts, missions for the Jedi Order to retrieve artifacts of immense power and ensure that they do not end up in the wrong hands.
It is on a mission to recover what was lost in the Valley of the Jedi that Allana encounters a dark Jedi— one who claims to be a part of a greater organization. Reports of dark Jedi fly in from across the galaxy, as well as strange occurrences in a space station far into the Outer Rim.
With the aid of a mysterious Sith ghost with vague ties to the cult of dark Jedi, Allana investigates the mysteries of the Force— the most powerful being the matters of the heart.
hopeless fountain kingdom is a ghost story and an Indiana Jones-style adventure set in the universe of Landscapes With a Blur of Conquerors.
Excerpt:
One of Allana’s favorite rooms in the Castle of Per’Agthra was the dining room that only the Royal House used. It was located to view the cliffs that gave the castle its name as it stretched out and around the Creel Sea, keeping Kira Ka Chume’Dan safe from its boiling depths.
Massive tapestries hung from the walls and the ceiling panel lights would slowly turn on when the sun set and never turned to full brightness because of the intense starlight of the Hapes Cluster at night. Allana had enjoyed several family dinners where they had watched the sun set and had eaten their desserts while enjoying the night sky.
Allana entered the room, passing the Chume’doro flanking the only official entrance to the space. Of course, they didn’t guard the trapdoor under the dining table.
The sun was high on the Creel Sea, turning the very horizon blindingly white. The polished silver table had seven settings upon it. There used to be eight, but Princess Leia had finally become one with the Force a year ago. Three seats were empty: Isolder preferred to take his lunches elsewhere, such as the Great Hall or perhaps in one of the homes of the lower houses or even with the Hapan military. Breha and Jacen were away studying. Breha at the flight academy on Kalidasa, near where the Chume’doro trained. And Jacen at the Jedi Academy on Stalstinek IV. Jacen would return to Kira Ka Chume’Dan later that day, but it would be far too late for a family lunch.
At the head of the table, as was customary, the matriarch sat in a throne-like chair with the highest arced back. To her right was her consort, and to her left was Allana’s place, as her heir. Her baby brother’s special chair that had a stool for him to climb up was next to her father’s seat, because Anakin needed help still cutting food and sometimes being convinced to eat.

Legend Lore Entry #3: Fafnir the Dragon
Your vision fades, and as it returns you realize you are sat astride a small horse, a giant of a Tiefling riding a warhorse at least two feet taller than your own next to you, a massive two handed greatsword slung on his back. He rides with a practiced ease, the dusty mid morning sun  illuminating the cobblestone road in front of you. You turn, feeling a lithe elven frame twist in the saddle, looking backwards towards the silver walls of your home as they shrink into the distance.
“What exactly is the point of this excursion, Lethalin?” The Tiefling growls. I am one of the foremost battlemasters of the mercenary’s guild, and I do not take kindly to babysitting a tiny academic such as yourself.”
I frown at the sun, absent mindedly gauging the hours left until sundown, barely acknowledging the rudeness of the meat mountain to my left.
“Mack, You’re here as a deterrent to bandits, mostly. My magic will be enough protection for us both, but the Order of the Vanir would rather us not kill anyone with our abilities if at all possible.
The Tiefling grunts again, frustration evident with the vagueness of my answer.
“Thats all well and fine, but why me and not some other intimidating fellow? I was to travel to Geldorcraft to aid in the defense of the city!”
This gets my attention.
“Did the guild not tell you anything?”
“Well...” I turn to look at Mack, who is squirming in his saddle with what appears to be self consciousness.
“I may not have been fully listening at the time when they gave my assignment.”
I sigh (quietly- this man has a reputation and a capacity for extreme swiftness and violence).
“We are to observe the dragon Fafnir and attempt to make contact with him, in order to see if he will aid the conflict in Geldorcraft.”
There's a long silence, for at least a mile if not more before Mack speaks again.
“And what do we do if the dragon says no to our proposal?”
I shrug- in truth my excitement at getting to see the last dragon in Midgard is somewhat tempered now that I am away from my colleagues and the safety of the city walls.
“I suppose we will see if your reputation is earned then, Mack.”
This shuts him up for the rest of the day.
The rhythm of the horse lulls me into a dull trance, which we elves are known for. The faint echo and scent of magic lingers on the air from the north, even this far away, a whiff of sea water and something darker, like sulfur or brimstone.
We stop for the night, setting a fire. I find a small stream, filling a pot with water before starting the fire with flint and steel. I feel Mack’s eyes on me, as well as the all too common question coming.
“Lethalin?”
“Yes?”
“Why aren’t you using magic to do all that?”
I grin, a memory of Allana’s teachings coming to my mind from when I was but a sapling, being trained in the great halls of the Order of the Vanir.
“Mack, do you shave with your greatsword?”
He pulls back, a look of confusion on his broad, light purple face.
“What? No! Of course not, that would be impractical and dangerous!”
I wait, but see no resolution or realization in his features. I gesture to the water, which has begun to steam and bubble gently in the night air.
“The fire’s hot. The water’s boiling. Simple tasks don’t require dangerous tools. I won’t use my powers for the same reason you won’t use that cleaver on your back to rid yourself of morning stubble. It’s.... what's the word? Overkill.”
Mack’s expression clears.
“That makes sense, I suppose. Like I can’t lift the heaviest weights possible every time I train, or I’d hurt myself!”
I nod, a quick grin crossing my mouth.
“Yep, that’s it exactly”, I say lightly, my tone giving nothing away.
The following 3 days pass without incident, and I find myself enjoying this warrior’s company. He frequently asks questions about life as a magic user, how it works, what it means to me, and other probing questions. I confess, I began to enjoy his company.
Then we met the dragon.
On the third day, there’s a dull rumble in the air- Mack and I are both on edge, seeing the dull red glow in the distance of Geldorcraft. The last messages had told us that the Goddess had ripped the demon limb from limb and that he had run from the field, but his followers had apparently gone into a frenzy for days after the hell spawns ignoble retreat, and the city’s fate was still very much in the balance.
As it turns out, the rumble was not the battle in the city.
Do you know the collective noun for a group of dragons? The word has not been used for a century, not since the grand culling of the wyrms by our Aesir protectors. The word is a ‘thunder’ of dragons.
I submit to you that a single dragon is enough to warrant this word’s use.
I thought the sky had cracked open, as a blast of wind sent our horses into a panic, throwing me from the saddle, the breath whooshing from my lungs. Mack collected his reins, setting his horse expertly, drawing the sword over his shoulder in a practiced motion, holding it easily in a single hand, facing against a mountain of black scales and wings the size of a galleons sails.
Mack jumps off his mount, his armor causing him to land heavily on both feet. His voice is deceptively calm.
“Lethalin? Now’s a good time to get on your feet. Maybe even to use some dangerous tools.”
I stumble up, feeling a bruise already forming on both legs and my side. For the first and last time in my life, I observe the majesty of a fully grown dragon.
Fafnir’s scales are so black they appear to absorb light. At different times they appear as sleek black steel, other times stone. His teeth are as long as Mack’s sword, his claws the same, and both look sharper as his claws have carved furrows into the stone below him just from standing. A glow at the back of his throat signals to that most famous ability of dragons. His wings spread to either side for nearly 50 or 60 feet. His eyes, shockingly, are a piercing green, and each one is as tall as Mack is. I can feel the magic radiating off of this creature like a furnace, and for a moment I doubt our plan. My fear is forgotten a moment later as an impossibly Deep voice rings out from behind the teeth, the dragon’s mouth and tongue somehow framing language better than I ever have.
“Greetings, Men of The East. I welcome
You to my domain, the vast grasslands of Fafnir, last and greatest of the dragons in Midgard.”
I swallow, feeling the lump in my throat. Mack has stood up out of his fighting crouch, the sword hanging from nerveless fingers, some fell magic working on him, numbing him with fear. I feel it to, but fight it down, saying:
“Greetings to you, Fafnir, son of Bolin. Well met, and we acknowledge your greatness. We come bearing gifts for your treasure hoard, and a request if you will allow us smaller beings to take up any more of your time this day.”
A mischievous light flares, and a breath of wind whuffs from the dragon’s mouth, nearly knocking us flat.
“Oho! Flattery! Tis only natural, for I am nature’s fury in all it’s glory and mastery. Your compliments are well received, young one. What is this gift you have brought me?”
My hands are shaking as I produce a tome
from my bag of holding, written in draconic. I hold it up, stepping forward, feeling the ground shake as the dragon brings one its eyes around to blink slowly and peruse my gift. It reads aloud, seeming to savor the syllables rolling off it’s tongue.
“A complete genealogy of the dragons- 8th edition. A good gift, a fine gift! Perhaps now this rumor and legend of me once being a dwarf will now be put to rest once and for all.”
I nod, breathless. The eye suddenly locks back on me.
“And your.... request?”
I swallow my fear, my voice cracking as I blurt out:
“We wish for you to help us find and kill the one they call Prusias, and to help defend the city of Geldorcraft.”
What can only be described as a frown crosses Fafnir’s face.
“I cannot do this, hatchling. No- I will not. Tell me, who is the leader of your coastal city?”
I wince. “Njord,” I say.
The majestic beast bends down, its eye level with mine once more.
“I can tell you know why this is a problem. Those Aesir destroyed my race. I am alone in the world because of them. My brothers and sisters have left for other realms to avoid extinction. Our race will survive, but we were made here, and our ancestral home is now forever denied for us. So ask me for any other boon, hatchling. I cannot grant what you ask.”
Tears cloud my eyes, and I feel a breath of wind on my cheek before the voice rumbles once more, quietly, filled with sympathy.
“I have watched your race’s persecution with great sadness in my heart, little one. Your kind are so long lived and mysterious to those who don’t understand what centuries do to a person. I am glad that you have found acceptance with your companion here. It gives me hope that you two legs will work things out someday.”
I swipe my hand furiously across my face, hoping that Mack can’t see me- a quick glance confirms the sword is now on the ground, his eyes entirely vacant with fear and whatever magic is clouding his mind.
“Will he be okay?” My voice sounds small even to my ears now. A earth rattling chuckle.
“Yes. He will likely remember this as a terrible dream.”
I look up at the dragon once more. A kinship fills my heart, and I instinctively reach out towards the dragon, touching the scales below it’s jaw. They are warm to the touch, like sunkissed rocks, and i scratch along the jaw, right where I would if Fafnir was a cat.
The green eyes close, and a dull rumble fills the air, a humming that is nearly subsonic, felt but not heard. I do not press my luck or ask again for the favor. The dragon gently grabs the manuscript from where it lays on the ground, somehow cradling it in a paw. It inclines its head to me before launching into the air, knocking Mack and I flat to the ground as it climbs into the air. I watch it leave, unsure if I’ve done the right thing. It feels right. The wounds of a hundred years ago are still fresh to beings like me and Fafnir, and I understand his reasons. That will have to be enough.

[ @lastsoloheir ➳ starter call from an eternity ago D: ]
Tumblr media
The rehabilitation ( still a process in motion ) was going as well as it could, he guessed. There had been numerous times since their fight where he had told his sister she should have just killed him -- ended all of this. But she hadn’t. And Jacen Solo was confined to the Jedi Temple, to the lower levels, to be watched and worked with -- the place where he awaited his trials.
He had finally received permission to access the main floor ( after a number of months ), to go and retrieve his own food instead of having them make someone bring it to him three times a day. It was this though, that caused him to see a familiar face in the main hall. A little girl he hadn’t seen in... he couldn’t remember how long. One he told himself he should never be allowed to see again.
  Allana.
Jacen stopped in his tracks, the grumbling of his stomach forgotten as he got lost in a flood of memories.

welcome home princess ;
Tumblr media
she could see the people running, hear the screams and the panicked calls for family and friends, she could almost feel the fear from inside the building. she couldn’t just stand there. not while her people suffered. why should she be allowed to hide out here until this passed while her people were putting themselves in danger looking for the same shelter she had. she had to go. as quickly as her feet would move her, leia ran. the door flew open in front of her and soon the president was ushering as many people into safety as she could.
over the howls of the wind came her voice, calling out for people to move, to run. she pointed out different places for people to hide, hearing the winds starting to pick up. leia moved, grabbing people when she could, pushing others other of the way. it was the only thing that made sense in her mind. saving those around her. a calling that she had always thought came from a sense of politics, fixing the issues from the inside.. but being here on the street, in the heat of it all, it felt right. she was meant to be here in the thick of it, leading her people. even if it meant putting herself into harms way.
as she moved, pulling people to safety, voice echoing through the streets, another gust blew past, this time, far too quickly for leia to move. at first it felt like just a breeze, a cool wind against her cheeks. it was almost refreshing after running for so long. that was until it picked up, the gusts whipping around her, and everything started to spin. her conversations with winter and ahsoka, the talk with han in the hall way, luke introducing himself.. it felt like she was reliving them with new eyes. seeing the pain on her sister’s face, the anger in ahsoka’s.. the loss that she should have shared with han and luke... it all began to twist.
soon she stood, eyes focused solely on the face of the man, no more than hours ago she saw as a friend. he stood in front of her, the red glow of a saber illuminating the wind that whipped past them. the pieces started to fall into place. her chest hurt, her body felt sore.. and all she could see was the face of sideous. twisted and red, watching her with nothing but excitement for what he was about to do. his words rung in her ears. she had been struck down just the same as luke, the saber that killed han taking her from their family as well. she had failed. and she had forgotten. the memory of him raised his hands to strike and quickly, it all changed.
she was on alderaan, no more than fifteen, sitting across from her parents at dinner, winter to her left. they had been planning on sneaking out that night, already sporting a change of clothes under their more appropriate royal attire. she was jittery, wanting to leave, to be free of the palace for even just a few hours. but she could tell, as her fork set down, the shift in her parents faces. there was no way they were getting past them. they had figured out the sisters’ routine all too quickly. the scene shifted as her mother began to speak, her father the ever supportive back up as a lecture came about their duties as the royal family once more.
the wind shifted, the scenes came in quick secession, the faces of her family, her friends all passing by. moments with luke alone after the war, discussing how everything would change for them, the reality of their parentage something they both had to carry. the falcon was a popular destination, whispered conversations with han in the galley, fights between them just as prominent, but there was always that feeling of love. regardless of the anger she wanted to hurl at him, it was there. on hoth, it was there. the moments they sat in bespin.. as he was lowered into the carbonite..
tears started to form as her life in washington returned. the faces of her children running towards her, the laughter between ben and nik, the fighting they would have.. the moments alone with allana, their conversations late into the night. reuniting with winter, with luke.. finding han again and again. her friendship with ahsoka blossoming into a sisterhood. the people she would do anything to protect returning to her.. the people that she had let down from a single move of anger.
maker, the anger.. the fall.. she had tasted the darkside that night, and wanted more. could she even face them now? would ahsoka have felt it? luke.. her children? how could she look han in the face after letting him live in a world without her...
just as quickly as it had started, the wind dissipated, and leia stood, weighed down by her mistakes and triumphs, her reality sinking in around her. the princess of alderaan stood now where the president had, and all she knew was she had work to do. if they hated her, they hated her. but she had to find them all.

Chapter 2 – C Block
Auranis AU
[Chapter 1] [Chapter 3] [Chapter 4] [Chapter 5]
Wordcount: 2022 words
Warnings: none, let me know if I need to add anything
Summary: Roman and Remus attend their first ‘new citizens’ talk and get shown to their apartment to clean up for the rest of orientation
Read it on ao3!
-
Just inside the entrance to the new room, a metal table and a security guard set up on each side. As the groups were led past the tables, each person got their bag searched and their pockets patted down by the intimidating-looking people in dark uniforms who tried their best to appear friendly even if it was ultimately not very successful. Thankfully, the process went smoothly and only the empty water bottle in Roman’s bag was taken, though he had been expecting that and many others were in the same situation.
Once people had gone through the security line, Allana led their group further into the room, where there were dozens of chairs set up. They were all facing the far side of the large space where a small platform was set up, presumably for a presenter to stand on.
Allana told the group to sit on the right side, and everyone quickly found a seat. Roman and Remus chose to sit towards the back of the room. The other group from the second bus made their way to the left-side chairs and occasionally stole glances towards Roman’s group.
After everyone got settled, Allana and the other group leader walked up to the platform and began speaking. “Hello, new citizens of Auranis! I’m Allana, this is Lark, and we’re going to quickly go through some important information for you to know.”
The guy, Lark, began, “To start off, let’s go over some of our basic rules. We have others, but these are the ones that will be most essential for you to keep in mind during your first few days here. We’ll be covering more of them over the next few days of your orientation, plus you’ll each have access to a community handbook in your Motives, which are in your welcome bags that you’ll find in your apartments.”
Allana said, “The first and most important rule is to never intentionally harm anyone. This goes for both physical and mental harm. The second rule is to follow your schedule closely. We take being late to things very seriously here, so do your best to be on time for things. Although we may be more lenient about being slightly late for orientation if you get lost, after you become fully integrated into Auranis, people will not be quite as forgiving and there will be consequences.”
She spoke with a stern expression, which sent a pit into Roman’s stomach. Remus was notoriously late to everything, and Roman just hoped that Remus would be able to take this as seriously as he was.
The two leaders covered several other rules and guidelines, and both Roman and Remus started to feel a bit fidgety by the time they had finished with that portion of the presentation.
Remus leaned over and whispered into Roman’s ear, “God, how long is this gonna go on? I’m already sick of hearing about rules, blah blah blah, nothing fun, blah blah blah.” Roman elbowed his brother in the side and glared at him, trying to tell him to shut up. Remus just rolled his eyes in response, and they both looked back towards the presenters.
“Now, everyone’s block, apartment number and a temporary passcode can be found on your confirmation passes. You’ll need to get them out later to see where your apartment is,” Allana announced.
Lark said, “I’m sure you’re all starting to feel a bit anxious to get your new lives started, so we won’t keep you for too much longer. The last thing we want to cover before breaking up into our two groups again is the itinerary for the next few days of orientation.”
Allana nodded and continued, “So, the plan for the rest of today is that you’ll walk with your group to find everyone’s apartment block, and then from there you’ll find your apartments. You’ll have an hour to set your things down, get cleaned up if you’d like to, and then meet up again as a group at the community center. That’s on level two, and don’t worry, we’ll show you how to get there when we go to find your blocks.”
As the two of them continued to talk, Roman had a hard time concentrating but he tried his best to retain as much information as possible. It seemed like they would probably be reminded about all the scheduling stuff again later, but he liked to have an idea of what was going to happen just in case they weren’t reminded.
“Then for most of tomorrow we’ll be having a job fair and you’ll all be able to choose what jobs you want to have! Reps from each career will have booths set up around the community center, and you can all talk to them about jobs you’re interested in.”
Honestly, Roman wasn’t sure what type of jobs would even be available, let alone anything that he could be good at. Doctor? Nope. Teacher? Probably not. Cook? He’d barely cooked anything in his life, nothing they ate back home really needed to be cooked.
After another couple minutes, everyone was released into the two groups. Roman’s group followed Allana out a door onto an outdoor corridor. There was another building sat right in front of them with a large sign that read ‘Help Center’ plain as day. When Roman looked left, further down the corridor, he could see where the buildings met up with the outer concrete wall that encased the whole city.
Allana announced, “Right ahead of us is the Help Center, which you can go to at any point if you have questions. Though, keep in mind that the majority of your questions will hopefully be answered over the next few days. If something is urgent and I’m not around, then you can come here, and they’ll give you a hand. For now, that’s all you need to know about the third floor, which is where we are currently. And now, follow me this way towards the elevators.”
Allana led the group towards the right and they soon reached six metal boxes with doors on them. They all filed inside the elevators and the doors shut automatically. Roman felt everything move suddenly and he tried to steady himself against Remus’s shoulder. This was certainly a first for both of them.
After only a few seconds, the elevator stopped moving and the doors popped open to reveal a brightly lit but enclosed hallway. Everyone stepped out of the elevators and re-merged into a single crowd.
Roman couldn’t help but look around at the tall ceiling and the buildings around him. They were large and rectangular, and there were two pathways that split out in front of the group. Behind the elevators sat a huge building, and in front of them were several more buildings that each had two stories and many doors. Roman figured these were probably the blocks that Allana and Lark had mentioned earlier.
“Alright, so right behind us is the Community Center. There are entrances on this side as well as on the right and left, depending on which block you’re coming from. On the other side of the Community Center is the Kitchen and the Dining Hall, which is where we all have our meals.”
Allana motioned for everyone to turn and look at the other buildings. “And these are some of the blocks that you will be living in! These two are blocks G and F, so if any of you are in those blocks you can go right ahead and find your apartments from here!” Everyone pulled out their confirmation passes to see which block they were placed in.
“Right at the top you’ll see your block’s letter, then your apartment number, and then finally your temporary passcode to get inside. Apartments 1-100 are on the ground floor, and apartments 101-200 are on the top floor so you’ll need to take the stairs up to those ones. Remember, at four o’clock —which is in an hour— we’ll be meeting inside the Community Center to continue with orientation,” Allana cheerfully said.
A couple of people broke away from the group as they headed towards their new apartment buildings. Roman and Remus’s passes both read, “Block C, Apartment 127, Code 396521.”
Allana led the group to the left, turning a corner around the Community Center, to find more people’s blocks. They passed by the side door leading into the Dining Hall, and then were faced with a building with a sign that said Block C.
The twins split off from the group, which only had about two dozen people left in it by now. Roman and Remus walked around the front of the building as Roman examined the room numbers. They soon found apartment 27, with 127 right above it, so they walked up the stairs, punched in their code and went inside.
Roman looked around the room and saw a set of bunk beds, each bed with a small duffel bag sitting on top of it. There was a tall, gray wardrobe positioned next to the beds. To his left, there was a round table with four chairs positioned around it, as well as a door leading into a walled-off section of the room that seemed to be most likely a bathroom.
Almost instantly, Remus clambered up to the top bunk and yelled, “This one’s mine!”
Roman groaned but gave in, setting down his backpack onto the lower bunk next to the duffel. He tentatively unzipped the top of the bag and discovered a strange device —probably that Motive thing they had mentioned earlier— laying on top of a pile of new clothes.
The screen of the Motive read, “Keep this on you at all times! Click the screen for more information.” Roman tapped the screen and explored some of the functions for a few moments before looking up to see Remus dangling over the edge of the bed and staring at Roman.
Remus asked, “What’s it say?”
Roman sighed and replied, “Keep this on you at all times. There’s some other stuff on here if you click the screen, like a map, a list of rules, an emergency line, and a few other things like that. I think the main thing for you now is the map.” Roman reached up and took Remus’s Motive, then showed him which buttons to click to get to the compound map.
Although Roman and Remus had been raised nearly the same by their mother, Remus had never really learned how to read very well. He never thought it was important, so he just didn’t retain it. Roman, on the other hand, loved reading and writing, and he picked up on it pretty quickly, too. One of the first things he hoped to do here was get Remus into a reading class or workshop or something like that.
Roman grabbed a change of new clothes from the duffel bag and headed over towards the bathroom. He flipped on the light and saw there was a shower in the corner. He breathed a sigh of relief since he hadn’t had a proper shower in what felt like forever.
Once he had gotten all cleaned up and changed into the new clothes, he came back out into the room and saw Remus laying on his bunk, tossing his tennis ball against the ceiling, over and over and over.
“Remus, c’mon and get cleaned up. We don’t have much time left before we have to go meet up with the rest of the group,” Roman urged as he started putting away his things into the right half of the wardrobe.
Remus leapt off of the top bunk, not bothering to use the metal ladder, and grinned at Roman, saying, “I could definitely get used to that in the mornings!”
Roman practically shoved him into the bathroom along with a fresh set of clothes.
A little bit later, Remus came out of the bathroom smelling significantly better than when he went in. They finished getting ready, then grabbed their Motives and confirmation passes, and headed out the door towards the Community Center, right on time.
