i wanna start reading abt dick / robin / nw / why does he have so many names. do you have any recommendations..... ;;; ??
Well, yes!!
If you want to start with what's important, I recommend:
Robin v2 Annual #4: One of the many versions of Dick Grayson's origin and my personal favorite.
Robin - Year One: I think it's a great comic since it's short and a good introduction to Dick Grayson's Robin once he's settled into the role.
The Brave and The Bold v1 #54 & #60: First introductions to the Teen Titans!! This origin hasn't been changed much nowadays, so you'll be good starting from here to learn about the team.
Teen Titans 1966 #53: Teen Titans origin and break up. Their adventures in this comic are all fun to read, so the full comic is recommended, but it isn't something essential to read, so you can skip it if you'd rather do that.
New Teen Titans v1 #1: Introduction of the new Teen Titans! After this issue you can read the rest of the comic, but that'll be up to you.
New Teen Titans #39: Robin leaves the mantle. In newer comics it's Batman who fires Robin and forces Dick out of the costume, but originally it was Dick's decision to stop being Robin and become his own hero. However, if you want to read the "Batman fires Robin" version, for that you'd have to read Batman v1 #408 or Nightwing v2 #101 (the latter being much harsher than the prior).
That's what I'd recommend to read about Robin Dick Grayson if you're just starting. After that, you can begin exploring any comic you want.
Now, moving on to Nightwing:
Tales of the Teen Titans #44: Nightwing introduction!! This would be the first time we get to see Dick in his new costume.
Nightwing - Secret Files and Origins: More about how Dick becomes Nightwing and the Kryptonian origin of the name, plus some other stuff that happen in this short comic.
Batman #416: Dick Grayson meets Jason Todd, the new Robin! Can't miss this one. It's nice to see how Dick confronts Bruce and ends up getting along with Jason.
The New Titans #55: Dick finds out Jason died and confronts Bruce about it. It doesn't go very well, and it's probably one of the moments that strains their relationship the most.
Batman #436 - #441: 5 issues in which you'll get the first look at Tim Drake's character, lots of Dick and Bruce angsty interactions after Jason's death, a new version of Dick Grayson's origin and then some more about Tim's character.
Robin v4 #0: Dick & Tim, Robin Dick Grayson flashbacks and finally Dick taking on the Batman mantle just as Bruce goes away for a while.
Nightwing 1996 #1 - #3: Nightwing and Bludhaven. Not my favorite issues, but they are important to learn more about Bludhaven and why Dick decided to stay and protect the city.
These are the comics and issues I recommend to start reading about Dick Grayson. Anything more you want to learn will be up to you, and you can start with whatever you like, this is just my personal suggestion.
A few extra recommendations I'd give you are:
Robin & Batman 2021: Beautiful art and a very nice approach to the start of Bruce and Dick's dynamic. And since it's a short comic, you can read it in one evening, which is always convenient if you don't have a lot of time to read comics.
Flash plus Nightwing: Dick and Wally have one of my favorite friendships in DC, so I recommend this comic about one of their adventures together during one of their annual vacations.
Secret Origins v2 #13: Dick in this one basically retells many things that's happened to him over the years while talking to Jericho and it's, overall, a very enjoyable issue.
Teen Titans 1966: I know I said it earlier, but it really is a very fun comic. I recommend to read when you're in the mood for something lighthearted. Each issue has it's own plot, so you can read one and then leave it until you're in the mood again.
Hope this helps you, anon!

So, I was gathering reference for a map making project and when looking at the Vale World of Remnant video got reminded of this map and was curious if you had any thoughts on things:
This was its follow up:
i think about those red settlements all the time. (i have another post about this somewhere but it’s lost in the tumblr abyss. rip.) now, first thing, the placement of these settlements is clearly vibes-based—we know there are no settlements in the menagerian interior and there’s no green markers where the city of vale should be, etc—so their distribution is probably meant to give more of a general sense of where people tend to be in a world populated mainly by grimm, rather than the exact location of specific settlements. in any case, what’s up with quadling country those settlements on the “uninhabited” continent where salem lives?
third data point, from the great war spot:
which implies that battles were fought across the southern peninsula of the “uninhabited” continent during the great war; this does not make sense to me unless there were people there, so my thinking is that these red settlements must have existed at the time and their obliteration occurred during the course of the great war, which tracks with qrow noting many settlements were permanently lost due to the fighting and the grimm.
but that leaves the questions of 1. who were these people, and 2. why hasn’t anyone ever mentioned them?—because if this was an entire kingdom that got annihilated during the great war, you’d think that would merit at least a footnote in the great war episode. the two explanations that i can think of are:
#1, the red settlements represent a now-defunct faunus kingdom that is receiving the same treatment in history books that menagerie receives politically in the present—namely, the “four kingdoms… (and menagerie)” thing where the faunus kingdom is not only completely marginalized on the international stage but humans barely even acknowledge that it exists.
this would also make menagerie a much harder kick in the face, if the faunus already had a kingdom—a much larger one, even!—that was razed to the ground, ended up impossible to reclaim from the grimm, and got unceremoniously erased by human historians while the human kingdoms were like “stop complaining, we gave you an island!” about it.
however, i’d think this would be a bit of history blake knew, and there’s an obvious place in V4 for her to have brought it up because she talks about the history of the great war in relation to menagerie!
or,
#2, the red settlements were founded by vacuans displaced by the conquest and occupation of vacuo. this conveniently explains why they’ve never really been explained, if they were separate from vacuo by virtue of not being under mistrali occupation but also still, in a way, considered ‘part’ of vacuo because the people living their were vacuan—the settlements were destroyed or abandoned after the war, sure, but in the end the vacuans who lived there got to go home and have their own kingdom back. i think this is also more in keeping with the decolonial project of the vytal accords, with imperial territories being liberated and so forth. and you still get the whitewashing-history vibe of well, sure these vacuans lost their homes but they got a kingdom in the end so…
<- this would make the vacuo arc the natural place for it to come up in the story proper, because the vacuans would remember even if the rest of the world didn’t.
either way, the fact that the settlements are 1. located on the continent where salem presumably lives, and 2. color-coded red definitely implies some connection between her and them—whether that’s a legitimate connection or just ozma making an assumption that people living in her proximity must secretly be under her thumb remains to be seen, but it’s interesting. i do think it’s quite unlikely that salem herself is the one solely responsible for their obliteration, because the great war episode does show that there was fighting in that region; if she did attack them she did so under the cover of a level of destructive warfare that would have wiped them off the map anyway.
i’m also very interested in the menagerian-lime settlements on anima—it’s always been my assumption that that’s where the WF is headquartered and the idea of faunus-majority settlements in southern anima, protected by menagerie, compels me.
#i assume all the valean settlements on the east coast are meant to represent like#small villages because there’s plainly not much there in the show proper -#but ficwise the apparent density in the east is why i have Eastern Vale at all :3c#(similarly in the fic the uninhabited continent - alukah - isn’t uninhabited its just#predominantly populated by nomadic peoples so the sedentary kingdoms act like it doesn’t count)

Eclipse (Tsams) Agere Moodboard + Headcanons!
(Only image I own is the bottom left, all others belong to the people who made them)
Age regressor!Eclipse headcanons:
⭐Eclipse usually regresses to the ages of 1-7, though their most common ages differ from Eclipse to Eclipse.
🧸OG Eclipse would force himself to not regress, and it would bottle up, leading to him being mentally around 6-8 24/7 before at some point it just all comes crashing down, leading to him being around 1 for a night or so.
⭐Lunar, back during the October takeover, found him one night regressed to a baby, hiding in a dark closet. He never said anything, bc heaven forbid Eclipse learn someone saw him in what Eclipse would consider a "weak" state.
🧸V2 Eclipse would still hide his regression, though Solar Flare was aware of it and would often times care for him during it. So, he regressed more openly (still in the safety of his lab when only him and Solar Flare were around.
⭐The Blood twins saw him regressing one night and made fun of him for it. Not a fun night for Eclipse.
🧸V3/4 Eclipse, too, regressed. Though he did it alone once again. One thing different from OG was that he didn't bottle it up. In fact, he regularly regressed every other night, it wasn't uncommon for him to lay down after a long day, grab his paci and stuffie and regress.
⭐V4 Eclipse eventually told Earth about his regression after one day she came across him involuntarily regressing. She took care of him until he was big again, then he explained it to her. She was, of course, accepting!
🧸Earth regularly takes care of him when he regresses, which he ends up soo spoiled. He gets so many stuffies and pacis and whatever he wants.
⭐Adding Eclipse redemption arc into this, let's pretend he became accepted into the Celestial family for a moment, yeah? Sun would be a great babysitter, he would play arts and crafts with him, teaching him how to make origami stars and everything.
🧸Moon (Old Moon) would be a bit hesitant at first, bc he's, well, Eclipse. The big bad Eclipse, regressing to a baby? Sounds unbelieveable of you ask Moon. But then Sun's out one day, busy shopping and whatnot, and Eclipse needs a babysitter. Moon hesitantly agrees, and now he had a baby Eclipse on his hands. They go to his lab, bc Moon has to work on something, and the rest is history. Earth comes to pick Eclipse up, and sees Moon showing Eclipse all of his inventions and this and that and-
... Moon would spoil Eclipse, a lot.
⭐Lunar, now Lunar was the most wary about Eclipse. He did a lot of stuff to Lunar, and Lunar wasn't too sure about the animatronic. Lunar was looking for some cleaning supplies or smth, going to restock the daycare when he opened a supply closet, being met with a sleepy, regressed Eclipse. Lunar hesitates, before deciding that a baby, Eclipse or not, should not be sleeping in a cold, dark closet! He gets him to his house, putting him on a beanbag and giving him a blanket, and before he knows it he's suddenly not so wary about Eclipse. He, too, spoils Eclipse rotten. When Eclipse is regressed to an older age, he would play games and do all this and that with him.
🧸Eclipse, believe or not, is very docile when regressed. Not too much of a trouble maker. That is, when he's regressed to 4 or under. Any older and he's throwing glitter on people and sticking his tongue out at Moon.
⭐He really, REALLY likes stuffed animals. Anything soft and fluffy he loves. Monty, after warming up to him, got him this stuffed animal that he can warm up and use as a heating pad. You know the ones I'm talking about? He uses it for his chronic pain (I'm totally not projecting-)
🧸Overall, he's a very loved little guy.

With how perceptive Elijah is about RWBY, you think she won’t be surprised by Ironwood’s descent to villainy because of all of the shady stuff he does throughout the show?
Bringing his entire military across the world to what is supposed to be a peace tournament
Showing off his totally cool military mechs to Vale
Sending soldiers from the kingdom most well known for its racism towards Faunus after White Fang goons causing trouble
Getting Ozpin kicked off the Vale Council for disagreeing with him
Making Vytal Festival security a team of easily hackable robots
Abusing his power towards Jacques (easy to miss, because, you know, it’s Jacques)
Closing the Atlas border and recalling all of his soldiers due to not trusting Leo
Imposing a law that unlicensed people can’t use weapons in a world where flesh-eating monsters lurk around every corner, which wouldn’t be as big of an issue if he weren’t neglecting to fix Mantle’s security system while regularly updating Atlas’ security (Thus giving the parents crushing on Jaune every reason to fret about their kids, Marrow)
Committing embezzlement by redirecting the materials meant to fix Mantle’s outer wall to his Amity project
Illegally detaining Fria, not because an elderly woman is easy to attack and murder and thus wants her to choose who her powers go to, but to groom Winter into becoming the next Winter Maiden by making Winter the only person Fria is allowed to see
Ordering an unwarranted black-bag arrest on Robyn after the rally massacre
Reminding the Atlas Council that Penny is “under his control”
Refusing to send Atlas airships to help in Mantle because “Atlas will be vulnerable”, when Mantle is vulnerable now and needs the help now
Honestly it wouldn’t surprise me if she does pick up on at least some of these. While she does tend to get very excited and (in the moment of her reaction) miss a thing here or there, as you said she is a very perceptive individual that loves to speculate and theorize.
Of course we obviously won’t know until we get there, because while Ironwood was definitely overstepping from the very start, I didn’t even really clock him as a possible threat until the end of V2 when he snatched control of the Vytal Festival from Oz. Then I was like “oh… you might actually be a problem later.”
And then there’s his minute role in V4/5 that almost paints him in a better light… if it weren’t for the little nuggets dropped that he has two seats on the council and that he was ordering an embargo. The only reason people stayed on Ironwood’s side then was because he was being directly contrasted with Jacques who is an undoubtedly awful human and it’s not hard to look better than him by comparison.
Regardless I’m looking forward to Elijah getting to meet our resident tin man and her thoughts on some of his actions. I have no doubt it’ll be a fun ride regardless.

Why do you think RWBY v1-3 worked compared to the rest of it?
Hm.
Honestly a lot of the first three volumes doesn't - the pacing can be awful (and grinds to a halt within arcs dealing with Jaune), the writing decisions leave a lot of to be desired(and are beyond offensive at times).
To say what the first three volumes do well is to talk about what the volumes after dont.
The issue with V4 and onward is simple one:
Too many new redundant characters
I have been hammering on this point again and again - in a weird attempt to expand the world, the showrunners ended up filling it with things that overlap win purpose or outright have no purpose.
Generally if you want to have something happen and want to choose between existing character and new character as initiator, nine times out of ten it's better to go with an existing character.
For example, why did we need Salem's evil council of evil? Why did we need a whole team of villains on Salem's side that essentially fulfill same role and purpose as Cinder's group already did? They don't exactly do anything for the lore or the setting and most of their purpose is one-note - Hazel for example exists just to rage about Ozpin in a poorly executed attempt at making his intentions and role more ambiguous - but there are already plenty of characters who can fill that purpose, so why was Hazel, as a character made? Raven exists, Ironwood exists and is clearly having a crisis, even Haven's headmaster exists (let's say he does) - plenty of ways other characters can fulfill the same purpose as Hazel without Hazel existing. Same extends to the rest of Salem's group - Watts exists solely to "explain" the computer virus (why did we need it explained?) and to have a reason to go against Atlas (but Cinder already has a reason thanks to her backstory in-show???) and Tyrian is the same way.
Too many redundant story beats
The writing attempted to make the setting more complex, but in the end a lot of what's added has no real reason to be there - why do we need Relics when Maidens are already there? Even if we were to go with the same idea of Gods causing doomsday(as dumb as it is) the writing could just as easily have the exact same plotline with collecting Maiden powers, for example. So why have vaults and then relics on top of that?
The Gods are the same way too. Why have Gods at all when you can already comfortably just go with the idea of Salem getting Maidens powers to her side being just as catastrophic? Salem's backstory doesn't even need them - in fact if one were to remove the Gods and keep the backstory the same, the end result would be exact same story. But the show doesn't do that - instead, come V9, it adds ANOTHER layer of gods and magic trees and gives the god brothers a backstory that ALSO wasn't needed and doesn't do ANYTHING in terms of furthering the narrative.
Generally if there's a plot thread you'd want to do the first question to ask would be "Does this change ANYTHING for any of the characters?" - plot is an excuse to get characters through the story beats after all. In the case of God Brothers, the plot thread invents a new problem and then solves it - nothing changes.
Lost Focus
The show is titled RWBY for a reason.
Ruby, Weiss, Blake, Yang - that's the core of the show.
The show started with the color trailers focusing on them and their journeys. The Volume 3 ended with them each having their own issues to deal with and plot threads tying to those issues.
What do the Volumes that follow do with that set-up? Nothing.
Volume 4 is absolutely pointless in grand scheme of things.
Volume 5 is absolutely pointless in grand scheme of things.
Volume 6 is absolutely pointless in grand scheme of things.
In fact, I wrote about the story structure issues with V4 years ago
The narrative structure, at the basic level, is a game of Connect-the-Dots - you have specific story beats you want to reach that work in accordance with overall story and character outline - it's up for The Plot(tm) to lead the characters from one beat to the other.
The way RWBY works past V3 is by inventing a new problem that didn't and then resolving it, essentially staying in place. I sort of outlined it in the V4 structure chart in my write up in how nothing in that Volume serves any real purpose nor furthers the characters.
What does the mess at Haven Academy contribute to the story story that Beacon already haven't? Does what happen there affect the story going forward? No.
What does team RWBY and the whole absolutely dumb and boring mess with the mech and leviathan do for the story? Are there any lasting consequences from that happening? Nope.
What does the run-in with the Apathy do for the characterization? Are there any lingering psychological effects? Do we learn something new about how Grimm function or how the Eyes work? Are there any lingering implications or any story holes that the encounter slots in into? Absolutely nothing.
That's three big examples in those Volumes where the writing invents a new issue, resolves it and doesn't further characters or narrative by doing so.
In Connect-the-Dots, you don't stop hopping from dot to dot midway-through, you don't hop back and forth between existing dots. Story beats and character beats are beats for a reason - they move things forward, they affect things, they alter things. If you have something that leads the narrative back at the place it was before in then you might as well delete the entire thing.
Now this is not the same as characters being stuck in loops or the idea of repetition as storytelling device - repetition that the narrative is aware of WOULD be a story beat in on itself and this is not that.
In fact even going into Atlas arc - the endgame has almost nothing to do with the build up to it and would happen anyway even if most of the volumes leading to it were removed.
Anticlimactic Payoff
If the narrative is build up to something, the pay off should generally equal to the amount of time and focus spend on the build up (unless it's used as a contrast).
Yet in RWBY a lot of mysteries end up being more of matter-of-fact answers than revelations.
What happened to the moon? Oh something crashed into it.
Why are Ozpin and Salem the way they are? Gods did it.
Why is Raven angry at Ozpin? He...turned her into a bird?
What has been Raven up to? Nothing.
Is Ozpin shady or not? Eh, not really - he's just sort of there.
What's up with the creatures of Grimm? Gods did it.
All of these were teased and built up going forward and the actual revelations never justified the build up or teasing that came before.
None of those revelations did anything to further the narrative or develop characters.
It was as if the writers were going through a checklist of what needs to be revealed.
So, What about the first three Volumes?
Now, flip everything I wrote about V4 and onward upside down.
That's the first three Volumes.
The only characters that exist are the ones that have an use within the narrative.
The plot threads are revealed when they become relevant - Mt.Glenn comes up when it matters, for example. If anything there's not enough reveals.
One can easily trace the plot threads through the story - how Ruby's introduction to Beacon affects her dynamics with Weiss, how Jaune's and Ruby's struggles with unexpected positions of leadership affect the team formation, how the friction within the teams furthers the plot to crash into villains goals. And what's more - each mini-arc ties to the four leads and their characterization. Things don't just happen - each storyline starts with the character and ends with characters growing or their relationships changing.
The Payoff is extremely good - V3 takes every single thing the show did through the three volumes and makes use of it. Everything matters - Mt. Glenn exposition, Roman, WF stuff, Jaune's insecurities, Pyrrha's characterization, Yang's characterization, Blake's conflict, Ruby's growth and position int he story, Weiss growth, etc - everything gets used and everything affects the characters involved.
For all the flaws, for all the absolutely insensitive story decisions and bad jokes - the first three volumes manage to handle those key points well and the end result is far more enjoyable.
The volumes after don't.
While good action sequences helped one of many reasons I hold V1 through V3 dear to my heart is because the show pulled off something that was quite rare back then when those Volumes aired - delivering actual consequences and not being afraid of upsetting the status quo within the story.

what are some problematic elements of v4 again?
here's a list of not great things in no particular order. not adding pictures because this post is already long enough as is, but go and reread the volume and you'll see what i mean.
v4 ended on march 30 2024, and the new v5 sparklecare ref sheets started to drop march 12 2024. kittycorn is suddenly able to draw barry fat again out of nowhere after not doing so since around the start of v3. it would've been nice if squeak drew him fat in the actual volume that was releasing at the time. here's a link to an ask i got that clarifies the dates/posting schedule of the comic.
uni being annoyed by barry and making fun of him, but only three pages later she gets frustrated at cyn for making fun of barry. sure, there's a timeskip, but... consistency, much?
the scene after cuddles berating uni could have been impactful if we weren't told constantly by kittycorn that this volume doesn't have any gore or violence in it (and if you didn't hear about it from squeak, the volume's cover says it as well). i understand needing warnings for things, but it's a warning for something that... doesn't happen? all of the tension from that scene - the question of whether uni did something or not, considering the large amount blood on the floor - is made completely pointless. the comic wants to act like there's an important moment happening, but at the same time, the comic itself made the moment boring because it told you there was nothing to worry about beforehand.
on the same note of cuddles berating uni - it's not executed well. his point about it not being the same type of puppet is... correct. sure, he's being a dick to uni and uni only, but his design mirrors uni. there's clearly something going on there. it's so obviously being written as a mouthpiece for kittycorn to state squeaks feelings. which is fine, it's squeaks comic, but it isn't written well. "people don't like my art, why are they attacking me :(" because people are allowed to have opinions about the main writer and artist of the comic they like, maybe? having the comic people are reading change all of a sudden to only comfort versus the commentary on the medical system and trauma that it was originally stated to be is going to make some people upset!
carrie is a dick to mood for basically no reason. uni locks herself in her room, carrie and barry can't get it open, so mood uses her keys to open it. cool! and then mood offers to clean kneevil instead of just throwing him away (as we're shown they have to do to comfort objects in v2). so then why does carrie make a slight at mood about her job to her? mood is a nurse, isn't she? so she's not even harming the patients! even if it's carrie taking out her anger about doom to his sister instead, it's still a weird moment to do it -- right after mood did nothing but help them.
"Why don't you go back and do something with your magic, dude? That's a talent you have, you're good at it."
"...I don't wanna freak out Barry any more though, bro... my magic stresses him out..."
"...you can do something with your magic, even if it confuses me, I'll be fine. If it would make you happy, do anything you want."
barry shouldn't have to sacrifice his own comfort and put aside his own feelings in order to make uni happy. also, when being yelled at by carrie, barry just says and accepts he's a jerk instead of defending himself? because the only reason he's being a dick to uni in the first place is because uni was a dick to him first (making fun of barry after he tried apologizing for something, which has been stated in the past to be hard for him). he was made fun of after being vulnerable, of course he's going to be a jerk to uni! but no, now he's completely in the wrong and uni is perfect and good in every way and did nothing wrong just because she's sad? that's not how that works! if uni (and carrie to a lesser extent) keep riling barry up, of course he's going to snap and act like a dick! why are they surprised that annoying somebody makes them act shitty to you due to them finding you annoying? you can't be intentionally annoying someone and expect there to be no consequences, or be mad/weirded out when there are consequences!
mood is scared by kneevil with the giant butterfly despite kittycorn stating that bugs are the only thing that mood and doom eat, and that them only eating bugs is supposed to be an attempt at writing an eating disorder. it's brushed off later with mood saying "nah. it didn't scare me that bad.", despite her being visibly uncomfortable a few pages earlier.
uni using her stupid perfect vision goggles to sew the puppets in this volume instead of kittycorn having to write squeaks blind character as actually blind. uni isn't supposed to have scissors or needles in the first place due to her being a self harm risk, so sure, the staff probably wouldn't help her with making puppets. but she could ask barry or carrie! maybe even jay! or any other friends she might have, considering she's spent nine years at the hospital!
barry should not be cool with barrific existing. it's been made a point throughout the comic that he hates and is distressed by magic due to it triggering his schizophrenia -- why would he be cool with seeing a puppet based on himself that's made alive due to magic? yes, i get that it's the famous barry puppet comic joke, but barry should be upset about this, not just shocked for a single panel and then completely fine with seeing magical sentient/sapient puppets the rest of the volume. barry should be panicking and hiding from all these shenanigans, or be mad, or something other than completely fine with it.
kneevil is able to trap barrific and barry in a cage... so why hasn't uni used her magic to stop cuddles in literally any way? i talk about this in more detail here.
the entire ending. or, more specifically, right before the ending, with kneevil crying and barrific apologizing. uni/kneevil is able to treat her/his friends like shit and don't get any sort of consequences for it. i go into more depth here about it (because trust me, it is written bad).
why are the sex jokes so constant? everyone has already said there's too many sex jokes already but sometimes less really is more. there should've been less.

For the V1 and V4 Eclipse rap battle:
V1: “Haha…
“So you think you’re a hotshot? Believe me when I say that you’re not,
“I got the simps all over me,
“And you? You’re going easy.”
V4: “Believe me when I say that I don’t care,
“But at least I could make friends without building them,
“Even after I had made a few; Yours had left you!”
V1: “So we’re going there? Huh, I see. At least I didn’t have Moons killing me.”
V4: “Hey, step back. No need to get too offended.
“At least when my life ended; yours was cryptic.”
V1: “You’re never going to be as good as me.”
V4: “Yeah, I know. But at least I’m busy.”
V1: “Well, let’s see what you do…
“Oh right! You let others watch you.”
V4: “Hey, you did the same when you took over.
“But hey, guess what? Mine is longer.”
V1: “Shut up! Just quit and give up.”
V4: “Hell no, you little fuck.“
V1: “Woah, no need to use that language!”
V4: “Shut the fuck up. I don’t need all your baggage.”
V1: “Well guess what? You do! And I won’t be quiet until you do.”
V4: “Then fine.”
*awkward silence*
V1: “…Well, I guess that’s fine.”
V4: “SHUT IT YOU FLY!”
*sigh* What am I doing with my life?

Grief, Guilt, and Bloodied Hands
cross posted from twitter I want to talk about this episode's use of 'bloodied hands' and how it ties into Ruby as well as Rosegarden. This post does get *dark* tho & includes shots from some of the more distressing scenes of v9e8 so please tread with caution.
I don't really have to get into detail with how this episode was framed with saving Oscar until last being what pushed Ruby over the edge and why that's important. It's very clear to everyone that saw it. But let's talk about how we get there.
Ruby's aura broke when she fell from the chandelier and then she was tossed around by a few of Neo's puppets while Oz is left out of frame until the very end. It is only then that she starts to show welts and bruises, at the other end of Long Memory. Before vs After:
We can see she's got her own blood on her hands here. The way they use this particular visual cue is threefold.
The first thing it's symbolic of is her own inner wounds. How much they've hurt her, how they've led her here, & where they're leading her next. Also in the most literal meaning of the metaphor, this is emphasized by Ruby's 'death' being on her own hands by the end of the episode.
The second is that those 'inner wounds' of hers are partially the lives of all the people she couldn't save. Her grief and her guilt.
And the third association is being symbolic of the people she hasn't lost yet. Specifically Oscar. Which we can tell because immediately after that last image (the first time we're shown the blood), we see her hand grabs her weapon before she defends herself.
This is followed by the cane falling before we're shown that the blood on her hands is now Oscar's. The first time she's able to use Crescent Rose all volume and this is how she's rewarded for it.
At the beginning of this episode, she pushes Little away because she's convinced that if they stay with her, they'll end up dead too. I will get to them next, but first this confirms something very strongly:
That Ruby is afraid to move forward. Not just because of her past, but also because of her fear for the future.
In her monologue in the v4 finale, she says the following:
"Believe me when I say I know it can feel impossible. Like every single day is a struggle against some unstoppable monster we can never hope to beat... but we have to try. If not for us, then for the people we've already-... for the people we haven't lost yet."
This sequence is literally all of Ruby's motivations and fears combined into one torturous nightmare.
"If you stay with me, you're going to end up dead too."
She is being tricked into believing that if she stays with her friends, with Oscar, the same will happen to them.
That idea is what breaks her for the first time this episode before she's interrupted by the cat.
Brief sidestep to mention that the way they frame this particular shot implies that Yang is of similar if not equal importance to Ruby here. Cause yes I'm looking at this specifically through an RG lens, but it is very important to acknowledge this scene included more than just 'shipping fuel' in how much Oscar means to her. This is her character arc, her fatal flaws, and the importance of multiple relationships she has. It started with her grief toward Pyrrha & co., an emphasis on her grief and closeness to Penny, wrapped up with the fear of losing Oscar, and then everyone else.
Ruby first reaches for the tea after watching Oscar fall & is interrupted by the cat. But even when she later comes back to her choice, we are not allowed to forget just how much that scene hurt her. Because as Little is begging her to get up and run, they are holding onto that bloodied left hand that pulled the trigger.
When Neo... does what she does to them, the narrative is telling us that Little as well as the blood on Ruby's hands (and all the things it's associated with) combined together to steal all her remaining light away.
"The light of hope is taken."
"If you stay with me, you're going to end up dead too."
She is proven right twofold.
First, with the illusion of Oscar.
Then again with Little who is very much not a mirage. "If I stay or go back home, my friends will die. I stayed here, and another did die."
And she, quite literally, can't live with that thought.
-
I don't thinkg Oscar's very loud absence or the similarities between him and Little as I've mentioned in other posts, compounded with both of them being used by Neo as the last piece to get Ruby to 'break' are a coincidence. And while I'll admit this episode was flawlessly executed, I am manifesting that this show never gets that dark again because I don't think I can take it.
Thank you for reading, and pls manifest that reunion hug. 😭 🌹🌲

Girls' Accessory Pantalettes - 4 versions
Hey! Do you want accessory pantalettes for children? Well, here they are! These were requested by @inlovewithregencyera.
BGC
Found in the leggings category
Come in 4 lengths - V1 is ankle-length and V4 ends a bit below the knees.
Pantalettes taken from Kirsten's Winter Outfit (though I do realize that's not where they're originally from. that's where I got em)
2 swatches - plain white and with a subtle lace texture at the bottom (which, in hindsight, isn't particularly noticeable in-game. But you can see it in CAS!)
Not all socks are compatible with the texture, but one pair I've found to generally work well are the Tea Socks from this pack
I don't recommend combining them with dresses shorter than knee-length or anything with preexisting pantalettes. It doesn't look good.
Some dresses also end up sort of... highjacking the pantalette texture.
HOWEVER, this can actually end up looking alright! While most pantalettes were white, they did sometimes match the dresses. But then again, the dresses were usually white as well.
Vertices: 289
Polygons: 289
Known issues:
They do a strange exploding thing in certain situations. I've noticed it in CAS, household portraits (the ones seen in the household manager), and the portrait in the bottom left corner in Live Mode. It doesn't seem to be an issue in gameplay though! And it only SOMETIMES occurs in cas. If it's very annoying, switching to another outfit and then back to the one you were editing should get rid of the exploding.
Some compatible dresses (used in the previews):
1: Qnie Child Long Sleeve Dress (direct download)
2: Cecile Nightgown
3: Josefina's School Outfit
4: 1896 CF Dress
Download (SFS) (i'm on sfs now!!)
Download (Mediafire)

need your thoughts on hawkeye & black widow #1 so badly tbh !!
this is like the third story in a decade where clint is being pursued for an assassination that he may or may not have committed and then reveals "well maybe i Did. you ever think about that???" "but clint...that's against your code!" "oh so NOW we remember that- i mean yes. i SHOT them." (explanation pending)
it is also the second story where multiple assassins are pursuing him simultaneously and then they explode him and break his ribs and cut up his leg and poison him but the first one had all that happening in the sewers after he got a prescription for his UTI so that one was funny. also those villains were in dog costumes and juggling.
ANYWAYS! i feel like they were unsure of who the secondary character in a black widow story was gonna be, and then someone remembered "oh shit! it's her and hawkeye's 60th anniversary!" and voila. i mean, i'm glad someone remembered? if only they remembered to make a corner box logo earlier than 15 minutes before press. it very much feels like a black widow story
which leads us to the bobbi page. it's as if everybody expected someone to have run with the bobbi-clint story threads post-thunderbolts, and then went "oh, wait, nobody actually did that?" bc what was that explanation. why is bobbi cool hanging back and mostly just listening to the CIA. i may retract my complaints if bobbi comes out of the woodwork with a plan or maybe even if they go on a date bc i can be bought off.
i do enjoy some whump myself, but i have to admit that many a series since fraction & aja's hawkeye v4 have clint smash head-first into the concrete early into an issue so he can have bandages all over his nose and face in all subsequent panels, but ignoring any other aspects of injuries? his humanness isn't just for aesthetic purposes--it's his whole thing! in said dog and juggler assassins hunting him down in the sewers storyline, clint was limping and slowed down by his injuries, having trouble drawing his bow; showing operating in a superhuman realm as a human is an impressive feat, but it has its consequences, injuries have consequences! here, we had an ambulance ride and slow-down, so that was nice. but also at the end he's standing around, face bandaged--i think this is just me nitpicking after historical portrayal. lest we forget mr. "i was underneath a taxi. yeah i lifted it up. i am fine."
in conclusion: oh shit guys clint's in a comic again?
#maybe i am developing a reflexive aversion to nose bandages. sorry#but the corner box is objectively ugly that i will not let go#we're only on issue 1 so let's see where we go#i am intrigued by the poisoning to come

I don't know if this counts as controversial but here we go.
I think Neo deserved a worse fate than she got. Instead of getting closure that I don't feel she deserved (I know many others will disagree) I rather have her get killed off while CC still possessed her or Cinder actually successfully killed her. After all the things she has done... she doesn't deserve the send off that she got. Rather give her the Adam treatment.
I don’t necessarily feel strongly either way, but I will say I don’t see any value in the show brutally killing Neo off or giving her a worse fate. It wouldn’t add anything narratively or for our characters.
This is mainly because the show doesn’t actually let us in on Neo’s history and Ruby doesn’t know anymore about her by the end either. Most deaths in Ruby aside from a few feel like they don’t happen to be impactful, but because the writers didn’t know how to use the character anymore and they had to go.
What makes this more sad is in a world like the Ever After, they literally could’ve had Ruby walk through Neo’s life similarly to the Salem Lore episode and that would’ve given any sorta deeper perspective and added weight to Neo telling Ruby at her lowest that the choices she makes make anybody on any side feel like their life is ruined. Cinder killing Neo means they brought her back after a couple years just to die with absolutely nothing changing about Neo after barely doing anything.
Side tangent, even Adam’s death didn’t propel anything aside from Blake and Yang’s relationship, because prior to it Blake took back the WF and the show decided she thinks she has better things to do than worry about him. Despite literally showing up to stop him.
So him dying felt like it came about because they were done writing about their racism allegory and didn’t know what to do with this personal villain that never got a proper back story and could no longer be a foil because their other half is done trying to spread her ideology despite the next location she’s going to being ground zero for why she was brought up the way she was, and why her personal antagonist exists in the first place. Instead she will bring up how she’s in the mine that caused Ilia’s trauma as well as mention once that she didn’t feel good about Murdering Adam.
And you know what the real kicker is? If they kept Adam working with Salem to further his and the other villains’ agendas, it would’ve naturally led to a Blake and Adam fight at the end. Neither of them had to hunt each other because only one of their dreams can come true and their journey to achieve it means eventually they’ll cross. Literally, if Blake decided to stay and join Ruby in V4 then she’s meeting Adam in Haven in V5 without trying at all and so is he!

And what does Salem want? Narrative has been saying “end the world so she can rid herself of the curse,” and sure, that might not be it because it’s based on faulty assumptions. But wouldn’t her end goal be to get out of immortality?
well. the narrative has said a lot of things:
to “change the world,” qrow says, “is exactly what the enemy wants” (v4)
salem “can’t be stopped, can’t be reasoned with, and will not rest until humanity crumbles at her feet,” says raven (v5)
salem’s rebellion sought to “destroy their old masters” and “claim the powers of their creators for themselves, and in turn, perfect their own design”
millions of years after that crushing defeat, she tells ozma they could “become the gods of this world” and “create the paradise the old gods could not”—same goal.
”why spend our lives trying to redeem these humans when we could replace them with what they could never be?”—in essentials, irrespective of how you read her specific meaning, this is “why should we try to go back to the old ways when we could make something new?”
salem is doing all this to “tear down the huntsmen academies,” ruby says (8.5)
“you’ll only be helping her bring about the end, for all of you!” oz shouts in a desperate attempt to scare cinder out of bringing the staff to salem (8.6)
hazel believes she’s trying to create a “new world order” with no huntsmen academies and no kingdoms (8.7)
oz deliberately misrepresents the nature of salem’s immortality to support his claim that “all she craves now is release. death,” while trying to scare hazel into turning against her
tyrian believes she’s “destruction incarnate” and “wishes to see the end of it all!”
salem tells cinder “in pursuit of a new world, no cost is too great” (8.14)
in WOR episodes and her soliloquies, salem speaks highly of humanity and of the democratic councils but is utterly disdainful of the huntsmen academies (which exist to “protect a lifestyle,” in her view) and of ozpin’s “guardians” and “monuments” to a “so-called ‘free’ world”—her protégée grew up a slave in the heart of atlas, ozma’s crowning achievement—and she declares that his guardians will fail him, his monuments will fall, and that she “can’t wait to watch [him] burn.”
so… on balance, not only is “salem intends to change the world” the first thing we’re directly told about her, it’s also the narrative that aligns with both salem’s history (on three separate occasions in 6.3, she rejects the divine order and envisions a new world without the brothers) and everything salem herself has said (“in pursuit of a new world” + her specific ideological problems with the “lifestyle” huntsmen uphold, a lifestyle that turns a blind eye to child slavery, inequality, genocide—remember the faunus had to fight a war to stop the human kingdoms from trying to forcibly “centralize” the faunus population in menagerie (1.12)?—and relies on using children as cannon fodder while restricting all training in self-defense to an elite warrior class that more or less exists above the law, bc people who live outside the kingdoms don’t need huntsmen)
the only character who truly, unquestionably believes that salem wants to Destroy The World is tyrian, who is off his rocker.
everything oz says about her plans in v8 has to be taken into consideration that he’s 1. a practiced liar and 2. actively trying to manipulate salem’s agents by appealing to their fear of her, so he has a strong incentive to distort the truth—which he does, by misrepresenting her immortality as a ‘curse’ and lying about what the end clause is. (the brothers didn’t curse her, per se; they dropped her into the fountain of life and told her she could “rest” only once light was satisfied that she’d learned her lesson).
and then raven phrases “she will not rest until humanity crumbles at her feet” in an ambiguous way that could mean either “salem wants to destroy humanity” or “salem is going to confront the gods and get everyone killed again” depending on how much raven actually knows.
the other factor to consider is that. it’s really strongly implied in the lost fable that salem accepted that she might never be mortal again before she even incited the rebellion. “if she were to turn humanity against light and darkness, she could rid herself of their curse, or at the very least… she could make them suffer.” <- she hoped that she could find a way to become mortal again, but she knew it wasn’t a certainty. the god of light implied to her that only he and his brother could restore her mortality; she dedicated herself to destroying them anyway.
like. she made a choice, then. that she wanted to topple the brothers even if it meant she would never ever be able to die. and even after they butchered the world and left her deathless in the ashes for millions of years, even after she became desperate enough to throw herself into the pool of grimm… when ozma told her there was a way to call the brothers back and plead for mercy, salem didn’t hesitate even for a second before saying no. she has no interest in redemption.
if she wanted to die the only thing she’d have to do is go to ozma and tell him she’s ready to repent. they both know that’s what it will take for the world to be spared, salem humbling herself before the gods to repudiate her rebellion. and it’s not like salem has any pride; she says “it’s all my fault” with her whole chest and describes exactly how she erred with cinder in front of her whole inner circle (and ozma), and she calms down when yang tries to provoke her on purpose.
it doesn’t matter if she’s actually repentant or not. she knows the brothers aren’t omniscient; all she has to do is bow down and say the god of light was right about life and death and she’s sorry for being so selfishly arrogant. and then she could rest.
but… “we finally had freedom.” and “your monuments to a so-called free world.” and her song: “you can’t have my life/i'm not your sacrifice/you can try, but i’m free/and you won’t conquer me/i won’t crawl/most of all/i won’t fall/for you.” and hell even the myth she quotes to ozma when she rejects the mandate: “This land is no less hospitable than where we came from,” the people on the beach said. “But here at least we have control of our fates, free from the influence of others.”
freedom. over and over and over again, what salem wants is to be free; first from her tower, and then she finds her freedom in ozma’s eyes, and then immortality is her prison only for as long as she’s trying to kill herself to reunite with ozma but becomes her greatest weapon the moment she turns her attention to liberating the world from the tyranny of the brothers, and then she believes she’s found freedom with ozma again until he admits his true his intentions and:
she’s back in the tower again.
the divine mandate, ozma’s endless crusade to destroy her, to rid the world of her influence, to keep her in exile by casting her as the root of all evil while he tries and fails and tries and fails again to unite the world without her so he can summon his gods and be rid of her forever—that’s her tower, now. salem just wants to be free.

opinion on vol 4?
Oh anon. . .do I have thoughts on volume 4. This is gonna get long.
Now, first of all; I don't want to sound like a sex-negative prude even though I'm a minor. But the sex jokes were a lot in that volume. There's nothing wrong with dirty jokes or anything of the sort, but as I've specified before the jokes in v4 happen with so little cushioning between real, important events that it almost feels like hazbin hotel levels of writing. If you want your audience to actually be impacted by an important event, you don't surround it by dirty jokes trying desperately to get them to laugh. Yes, dirty jokes can be used well, but not when they take away your attention from actual important events.
Second of all, I do not like the message of the story. At the end everyone forgives Uni because she deserves it since she didn't do ANYTHING wrong. Actually, she did. I've already talked about how Hemera had every right to be angry at Uni for Kneevil destroying her plants. Miley also had the right to be angry; she had just been brought back to a very traumatic place right when she believed that she would finally be free to move on with her life. Her being thrown into a TRASH can must have taken a toll on her emotionally. Mood got attacked by her comfort food despite her eating bugs supposed to be an attempt at an eating disorder (yay. . . making eating disorders seem silly) and Doom was set on fire. Even if he didn't die, he still could've and his comfort item was also harmed in the process. The message that "Everyone needs to forgive someone if they say sorry" is a terrible message. The people who didn't forgive Uni were not in the wrong. Uni still brought Kneevil to life, and it's only right to take responsibility for her own decisions.
I also really don't understand the fandoms reaction to that comic. They were calling Cuddles terrible for saying mean things to Uni, even though 1: Barry berated her just earlier in the volume and people called it Barruni content and 2: . . .he tortures people and takes money from the poor. Cuddles is a fucked up character. It's really weird that people were acting as if him making fun of Uni's puppets was the worst thing he could've ever done. Also he. Wasn't lying when he pointed out that those puppets weren't the right kind for what Uni was trying to do. I also don't like the proportions in that volume, since Cuddles himself looks weird and Barry isn't even fat.
I only liked the parts where Party was around, honestly.

is there anything major story wise in the v5 update (i.e. new additional story) or is it just updating the character skills and new enemies
yes!!! the major story wise changes only change before v4! v5 does actually add quite a bit to the previous stories! axez added in a few additional scenarios that introduced at least 4 new characters as well as new enemies. theres also more lore on pre existing bg characters to make the story slide together more, i assume axez is setting up something pretty big for the end.
to give you the basic scoop of it all; more story more character more skills more enemies new level system new puzzles new dialogue new minigames new portraits new voicelines and axez simplified some of the more difficult things that some players struggled with
everything pretty much got updated!! and it looks and plays really good too!

That Tamagotchi fan community has proven to be able to get results when they let it be known that they actually want something really bad but it only works when a lot of people actually speak up, responding to social media posts ( we really need to let go of the notion that replying to social media posts and saying we want more is somehow "entitled" or "toxic" it's literally what their accounts exist for besides just advertising and keeping their brand in mind ). If only a few people say they want it, then you're probably not going to see any results.
There's still so much more I'd like to experience without paying outrageous ebay prices for a device that might not even function anymore.
Tamagotchi Angel and Tamagotchi Ocean were both released in English, but the latter is almost impossible to find at a reasonable price, and could use some balance tweaks in a possible remake. Tamagotchi Morino and Tamagotchi Devil never got an english release, both were planned as Tamagotchi Garden and Tamagotchi Monster, but neither ended up coming to fruition, and the Devil is impossible to find for a reasonable price. You might get lucky with the Ocean if you stick to Japanese releaess, but not the Devil. I wanted these more than the Connection remakes and was always asking Bandai for them. Now that we have connection remakes, I hope fans will start joining me in asking for other vintage era remakes like these.
There's also v4, v5, and v6 of Tamagotchi connection. We're getting a remake of V3 after years of begging for it. V1 and V2 i'm told are just basic ass Tamagotchi and we're missing almost nothing by them going straight to V3. But V4 5 and 6 are incredibly different. I'd love to experience those some day, I feel like these have the best chance of happening next if the connection remakes do well, but only if the fans ask for it.
Lastly, there's the Tamagotchi anime... only the first twelve episodes and the movie have a dub available, there is almost nothing available subbed, a few scattered episodes and the second movie. The best shot we had at a fan sub, the animetchi project, had to stop all efforts due to personal life reasons, and Bandai is unlikely to do anything with the anime, as it's officially ended. Our best shot is to ask Discotek to subtitle it, they're known for getting the lisence for more obscure niche anime and doing really good work with it. They actually have an official wish list thread on Reddit, and I suggest everyone who actually wants to watch this anime let it be known in this thread ( you can also drop a few other suggestions in there too. )
Discotek's official anime lisence request thread on reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/discotekmedia/comments/15ep5ns/official_discotek_license_wishrequest_thread/
Fans need to stop being afraid to ask for what they want. Bandai isn't making Tamagotchi material as a hobby, it's not harassment to let them know what you'd exchange your money for. So please, speak up. They have market analysts for a reason.
