The fact that people arent allowed to have any criticisms with sparklecare lest they be blocked by KC and the main community, just shows how toxic it is.

Like KC is selling merch, she has a patreon.

She cant be serious when she is saying its a "personal comic"

If its all personal and you dont want a huge fandom. Why do you have a patreon, sell merch, and want to publish the comic??? /nay

At this point it feels like KC is taking advantage of her followers. Like bun can grab that bag, but dont say its entirely personal when its clearly not. When people work with you to make the comic, when you have people to design characters for you, when you want it to be published.

When you involve other people in your work, it is no longer just about you.

And if you can't handle critique, you can not handle your comic being published.

hadron, i have always felt this, and this is incredibly well said. kittycorn brushes off anything negative about her comic by saying it's personal, and made to comfort her and for her to vent, and that's all. but... kit has a team. kit has the zcp, who, like you said, have made characters for and work on the comic alongside kit.

i am not denying that there are personal elements in the story - there very clearly are, and if it wasn't obvious enough, there's a good handful of self insert characters kit has too. but kit cannot use the "i have trauma, it's my trauma comic" excuse to brush off everything people have to say about it when it isn't just her comic anymore. there are legitimate issues with the writing and some of the messages (especially in v4), and any talk about it is being swept under the "you're just hating on a disabled queer creator!!!" umbrella when it shouldn't be.

on january 1st, 2024, the website used to say this about the comic: "Sparklecare is a webcomic that is meant to be social commentary on various things, including the healthcare industry, ableism and attitudes about mental health, and trauma and the experience of being a victim of trauma. Though it has bright colors and relatively silly characters (being cartoon animals and with punny names) the message of the story is actually rather dark in nature."

but as of february 9th, 2024, it was changed to this: "Sparklecare is a webcomic about trauma and the cycle of trauma. It's based on a real-life experience I had in a real-life hospital, and I created the story as a venting way to heal from the trauma I experienced. It also doubles as criticism of the American healthcare system and the way its hurt me and others like me. This comic is created with the intent to heal from my trauma and hopefully help others feel less alone in their experiences and maybe give them a space to heal as well."

again, i am not denying that the comic is personal to kittycorn. but people are allowed to be upset that the thing they like changed. people are allowed to think something could be done better than it is.

let's talk about the emem and foster care problem.

in v2, carrie said she used to be in a foster home with her sibling. on the sparklecare tumblr blog, kittycorn has mentioned multiple times that anthries only get kids if the parents all want a kid, and the egg won't hatch until they've proven themself as worthy and good parents. emem also won't send eggs into dangerous places (like the hospital, for example. kids aren't allowed in there anyway, but you get my point).

so the only way for children in this universe to have truly "bad" (by kittycorn standards) parents and get physically abused is if… the parents both die? and the children get sent to foster care? it's not that children can't be traumatized at all - mood and doom are said to have been bullied for their extra limbs, and most of the cometkids have some sort of trauma, too. eve, sly, marco, and wendy, just to name a few. the fact that birth parents can only be good (at the very least, not abusive) and foster parents can not only be good is… kind of a bad message to send!

it's not like it's entirely eliminating child abuse, either - again, children on spinch can be traumatized. kittycorn has just cherry picked the kind of trauma kit thinks is okay for kits characters to have. it's a trauma comic, it's about dysfunctional families, yet… some events are too bad to bring up, so they're magic-ed away? some trauma is okay to bring up and talk about, yet other kinds aren't? why is children being physically abused too bad to talk about, yet the entire cast of sparklecare is covered in scars? sure, they're adults, but that type of thing can happen to children too. how come the cometkids' trauma is a main point to their identities (eve and sly and wendy, specifically), but anything past emotional abuse is too far?

it sends the message that some types of trauma are more worthy to be talked about than other types. it's supposed to be a comic about representation, yet anything kittycorn doesn't like is thrown to the side and pretended like it doesn't exist.

i don't care that pregnancy doesn't exist, that's not the problem. the problem is that the faux pregnancy (eggs) come with rules. what clarifies a "good" parent from a "bad" parent? kids can not like their parents yet they can still be "good" - as seen in cometcare.

i understand there has to be some sort of solution to a kid that doesn't have any parents to take care of them, but this doesn't feel right.

what are some problematic elements of v4 again?

here's a list of not great things in no particular order. not adding pictures because this post is already long enough as is, but go and reread the volume and you'll see what i mean.

v4 ended on march 30 2024, and the new v5 sparklecare ref sheets started to drop march 12 2024. kittycorn is suddenly able to draw barry fat again out of nowhere after not doing so since around the start of v3. it would've been nice if squeak drew him fat in the actual volume that was releasing at the time. here's a link to an ask i got that clarifies the dates/posting schedule of the comic.

uni being annoyed by barry and making fun of him, but only three pages later she gets frustrated at cyn for making fun of barry. sure, there's a timeskip, but... consistency, much?

the scene after cuddles berating uni could have been impactful if we weren't told constantly by kittycorn that this volume doesn't have any gore or violence in it (and if you didn't hear about it from squeak, the volume's cover says it as well). i understand needing warnings for things, but it's a warning for something that... doesn't happen? all of the tension from that scene - the question of whether uni did something or not, considering the large amount blood on the floor - is made completely pointless. the comic wants to act like there's an important moment happening, but at the same time, the comic itself made the moment boring because it told you there was nothing to worry about beforehand.

on the same note of cuddles berating uni - it's not executed well. his point about it not being the same type of puppet is... correct. sure, he's being a dick to uni and uni only, but his design mirrors uni. there's clearly something going on there. it's so obviously being written as a mouthpiece for kittycorn to state squeaks feelings. which is fine, it's squeaks comic, but it isn't written well. "people don't like my art, why are they attacking me :(" because people are allowed to have opinions about the main writer and artist of the comic they like, maybe? having the comic people are reading change all of a sudden to only comfort versus the commentary on the medical system and trauma that it was originally stated to be is going to make some people upset!

carrie is a dick to mood for basically no reason. uni locks herself in her room, carrie and barry can't get it open, so mood uses her keys to open it. cool! and then mood offers to clean kneevil instead of just throwing him away (as we're shown they have to do to comfort objects in v2). so then why does carrie make a slight at mood about her job to her? mood is a nurse, isn't she? so she's not even harming the patients! even if it's carrie taking out her anger about doom to his sister instead, it's still a weird moment to do it -- right after mood did nothing but help them.

"Why don't you go back and do something with your magic, dude? That's a talent you have, you're good at it."

"...I don't wanna freak out Barry any more though, bro... my magic stresses him out..."

"...you can do something with your magic, even if it confuses me, I'll be fine. If it would make you happy, do anything you want."

barry shouldn't have to sacrifice his own comfort and put aside his own feelings in order to make uni happy. also, when being yelled at by carrie, barry just says and accepts he's a jerk instead of defending himself? because the only reason he's being a dick to uni in the first place is because uni was a dick to him first (making fun of barry after he tried apologizing for something, which has been stated in the past to be hard for him). he was made fun of after being vulnerable, of course he's going to be a jerk to uni! but no, now he's completely in the wrong and uni is perfect and good in every way and did nothing wrong just because she's sad? that's not how that works! if uni (and carrie to a lesser extent) keep riling barry up, of course he's going to snap and act like a dick! why are they surprised that annoying somebody makes them act shitty to you due to them finding you annoying? you can't be intentionally annoying someone and expect there to be no consequences, or be mad/weirded out when there are consequences!

mood is scared by kneevil with the giant butterfly despite kittycorn stating that bugs are the only thing that mood and doom eat, and that them only eating bugs is supposed to be an attempt at writing an eating disorder. it's brushed off later with mood saying "nah. it didn't scare me that bad.", despite her being visibly uncomfortable a few pages earlier.

uni using her stupid perfect vision goggles to sew the puppets in this volume instead of kittycorn having to write squeaks blind character as actually blind. uni isn't supposed to have scissors or needles in the first place due to her being a self harm risk, so sure, the staff probably wouldn't help her with making puppets. but she could ask barry or carrie! maybe even jay! or any other friends she might have, considering she's spent nine years at the hospital!

barry should not be cool with barrific existing. it's been made a point throughout the comic that he hates and is distressed by magic due to it triggering his schizophrenia -- why would he be cool with seeing a puppet based on himself that's made alive due to magic? yes, i get that it's the famous barry puppet comic joke, but barry should be upset about this, not just shocked for a single panel and then completely fine with seeing magical sentient/sapient puppets the rest of the volume. barry should be panicking and hiding from all these shenanigans, or be mad, or something other than completely fine with it.

kneevil is able to trap barrific and barry in a cage... so why hasn't uni used her magic to stop cuddles in literally any way? i talk about this in more detail here.

the entire ending. or, more specifically, right before the ending, with kneevil crying and barrific apologizing. uni/kneevil is able to treat her/his friends like shit and don't get any sort of consequences for it. i go into more depth here about it (because trust me, it is written bad).

why are the sex jokes so constant? everyone has already said there's too many sex jokes already but sometimes less really is more. there should've been less.

this is very much a nitpick but i feel like the pun names have been getting worse. like. they arent even names anymore it feels like

i feel like some of the names have always been a bit strange and not really names (hemera, jandy, cyn, brigh), but i can definitely agree with you on the pun front. "taffy luck" supposedly being "tough luck" (for howie's cogsona)? that's a stretch. though, "howie king pupper" being "hecking pupper" has always been a stretch by itself.

so... why doesn't uni trap cuddles in a cage and lock it, just like this? cuddles isn't magic, it's not like he can even try to get out. sure, we wouldn't have a comic if cuddles was in jail, but a solution for the comic's main goal is literally right here.

"oh, but the staff would-" in v2, the staff were the ones who let the main five escape! because the staff who let them out are janitors, their jobs aren't to mess with the patients in any way, and cuddles even knew they let the patients out, too! the staff wouldn't care! 90% of the staff don't like cuddles either!

and it's not like uni has an aversion to using her magic on people, either. it would maybe be understandable if she had some sort of fear of using her magic on people and not just inanimate objects, but she levitates barry in v1 and heals his hand from a sewing needle prick in v2 (and i'm sure there's more examples i'm forgetting).

you can't have something as powerful as magic being able to spawn in anything it wants (and sure, there's a limit to magic use, but if uni planned correctly it would be fine) and not give even a hint as to why the magic wouldn't have let them escape already.

hey mods, whats the ship that you most hate or dislike? caroom, hemeruni, what ships?

I am stuck between two choices, the first is rather obvious. Carroom is a ship that is abuser x abuser and the entirety of kisswas "I loved him too" reveal came from the depths of Tartarus as it was new showed nor even implied once, in fact quite the opposite was implied before so It is completely an enigma where this ship came from and even more a mystery why KC though they would be a good pair. The second choice though is a bit more, controversial and much less obvious though. That being Barruni, allow me to explain. Uni has shown on multiple occasions that she does not respect Barry's boundaries about magic and even actively seems to intentionally use magic in front of him on occasions despite knowing that he dislikes her use of it, Uni has gotten away with far too much for me to believe that Barry would still actively engage in a proper relationship with her after all of this. I also fear that after all of this, KC wont even know how to do Barruni that well without horribly mischaracterizing them on both ends in a way that leaves all of their previous personality traits behind and just makes them previous husks of their former self. carroom. there's a post explaining why i hate it so much. abuser x abuser trope? fucking disgusting. plus, it's shitty writing of a cliche that doesn't even make proper sense to me. -🚬

personally, i don't have one ship i hate. it's a whole genre of ships - anything with side characters in it. on the wayback machine, on the faq for the site, we're told some of the official ships are kills x shortnick, jean x orange, and caroline x kiki. but (obviously except for caroline), what do we know about these characters in order to ship them? we know maybe a sentence or two worth's of information about them! that's not enough!!! even with the more popular small ships that are also canon: mood x rem, pinata x funfetti, mel x cyn, jay x caroline... we get scraps of interaction and ship moments in the comic, if anything at all (seriously, jay x caroline? where is that coming from? they're two major characters but there's still nothing!) i wish characters were elaborated on more before they're shipped, which is also why i don't understand any ships with the chunklings. they've been here a while but we don't know anything about them. and yes, before anyone asks, this does apply to polly as well. they're a major comet parent, and yet... there's nothing actually there. -mod polly 🧊

one thing that irks me is that kc hasnt actually *shown* us anything from the new website (to my knowledge). we're just supposed to take her word for it and hope it's not bad. im confused as to how we've gone ~5 months without even a SINGLE screenshot

sure, the new features SOUND cool, but... how do they work? how do they look? thats what i want to know!! plus, she'll probably get better feedback and suggestions if kit actually shows us what she's doing!!

from what i know, anon, pictures of the new website are exclusively on the patreon, with the text of how it all works being public (and in the "site revamp devlog" tag)! also from what i know, kittycorn isn't just making the website and then releasing it without any feedback - kit's been actively taking suggestions from asks on the tumblr, and i'm sure patreon users are able to suggest changes, too! it would be weird if they couldn't, considering they're getting the actual pictures. i know it's disappointing for the website look to be locked behind a paywall, but kittycorn has also said that there's going to be a questions/suggestions feature on the site once it's live, too!

yes! uni did that to both of them! in fact, barrific brings this up earlier in the comic!

it's after kneevil is let out of the jar and escapes to go set doom's coat on fire, "so you were just using me? i'm not here to solve problems you made."

but magically, for some reason now, barrific wants to help! because... doom being hurt trumps everybody else who got hurt, for some reason...? and now it matters that kneevil wants to hurt uni's friends...? i don't know how hemera and miley are uni's friends, considering they barely interact, but okay.

"just like barrific said!!!" kneevil, you are talking to barrific. that's not how people speak. script error...

"i'm sorry for being mean to you kneevil. you didn't deserve that treatment, no matter how annoying i thought you were. i'm sorry."

see, kneevil wasn't being annoying. he has been actively hurting people throughout this entire volume. ruining all of hemera's plants? sure, that's not hurting her, physically, but it's going to make her upset! dunking miley in a trash can? again, maybe she's not physically hurt, but that's some emotional damage! and then, don't forget, maybe 14 pages ago, kneevil set doom's coat on fire. that very likely could have caused him physical harm!

"you're doing this stuff to yourself."

no, kneevil isn't! hurting your friends will make them withdraw from you, which will then hurt you in the long run since then you will be alone (which is a thing people do, don't get me wrong). but kneevil is still hurting these people. kneevil/uni is not the only party being harmed by these actions. yes, he/they are self sabotaging, but bringing other people down with you hurts the other people, too.

"i'm sorry for being mean to you kneevil. you didn't deserve that treatment, no matter how annoying i thought you were. i'm sorry."

to bring this back up, since i lost my point for a bit there, if someone is being annoying, you are allowed to be annoyed at them! sure, calling people stupid and fueling the fire isn't the best idea, but just letting someone upset you and letting yourself be walked all over isn't cool. people are entitled to their feelings, it's the actions that matter. barrific/barry is allowed to be annoyed by kneevil/uni when they're being annoying. it's how emotions work.

"why should i believe you? why do you think i didn't deserve it? i mean- didn't i hurt everybody? it's too good to be true!"

"it doesn't matter what you did or didn't do! it doesn't matter if it was your fault or not! nobody deserves that, especially not you!"

okay, let's unpack this.

"didn't i hurt everybody?" followed by "it doesn't matter what you did or didn't do!"

excuse me?

kneevil did hurt people. that is a fact. it doesn't matter if he feels bad about it now versus earlier, when he didn't feel bad about it. kneevil hurt people. those people are hurt due to kneevil's actions. and barrific is just... brushing it off in order to spare kneevil's feelings, since kneevil is upset right now? that's not right. that's not how you treat other people who have been hurt- by brushing them off and saying their bad actions don't matter because the person who hurt you feels bad now.

"what you did or didn't do!"

well, kneevil did hurt those people.

"it doesn't matter if it was your fault or not!"

yes, it does matter. it matters a lot, actually. because a ghost didn't come out of thin air and hurt those people (people uni calls friends), it was kneevil who hurt them, who is part of uni. again, sabotaging your relationships with people is a thing that happens because yes, you think you deserve it, you think you deserve to hurt and feel pain and be alone. but you still did it. you still did it and it is your fault that those people are hurt now. you made the choice to hurt them, nobody else did it but you. they didn't deserve to be hurt by you, either, just like you don't deserve to be hurt and feel pain. but you still did hurt them.

"thank you for apologizing barrific… it meant a lot to me…"

okay, but where's kneevil's apology? where's kneevil's apology to the people he hurt? barrific got angry at kneevil due to kneevil acting out, and we learn he was acting out because he felt bad about himself, and barrific being angry only made things worse. okay, so barrific apologized. but where's kneevil's apology to all those people he hurt while he was acting out? sure, maybe you can say it's at the end, when uni and kneevil make little puppets for everybody that was involved! that's the apology!

but then. then.

"everyone else blamed me for what kneevil did… aren't you mad? he set you on fire…"

"why would i be mad at you? it wasn't your fault."

"…thank you bro."

this implies that kneevil/uni don't need to apologize to those people, since it wasn't their fault! look, doom says so, and he was hurt by them! even though... it was their fault. it was uni's fault - uni is kneevil, kneevil is uni, kneevil is a part of uni, and uni let kneevil leave after knowing he hurt hemera and miley. but this is brushed over because... what? doom says it's okay? doom lets himself be walked over just because he likes uni and knows uni is sensitive and knows uni doesn't want to be blamed for things anymore? because uni feels bad about it, therefore she should get away with it? that isn't how things work. it just isn't. that isn't how healthy communication between people, between friends, works.

if kittycorn believes this is how these situations work, then she needs a serious wake up call. because it isn't how things work (not healthily, anyway). just because you feel guilty doesn't mean you can treat people shitty and have it be fine. you shouldn't be the only one getting the apology, here. yes, even if you feel bad. you acted shitty to people, and you need to own up to the fact that you acted shitty to people instead of only feeling guilty and sorry for yourself.

I was reading your post about why the ending of v4 sucks, and at one point you mention that Uni makes puppets for her friends, but isn't that the April fools ending? The real ending is that Barry has a sex dream about Uni? I'm asking because literally since the finale came out I've been confused which ending is actually the canon one and which one was the April fools joke

you are correct, anon! when the last update of v4 dropped, it was of uni and kneevil making the puppets and the url had "april fools" in it. if you changed it to be the correct update and page number, it sent you to barry having a sex dream, implying that that was the true ending to the volume instead.

however, both endings are canon, as proven here.

hello, all. sorry for the silence - we plan on cleaning up the blog soon, since only a few of us are staying. the oversaturation (pun intended) of new blogs also makes it feel like there isn't much to say about the comic anymore.

however, we will finish answering everything in our drafts soon, before we probably go silent (or at least very inactive) until v5. the ask box will stay open, we just won't be checking it as frequently.

idk bro i liked volume 1 n 2 abt the same but defo id change how the cast reacts to barry always annoyed me personally just how hes a dick and feels like he doesnt get as much pushback unless its from a character that should have their actions treated as evil tho i do not condone unis treatement of barry as it is unprompted - uni

MY PERSONAL FAVORITE IS V1!! I THINK THE SURGERY SCENE REALLY TRULY SHOWS HOW TERRIBLE THE HOSPITAL IS WHICH OTHER VOLUMES FAIL TO DO IMO. I personally enjoy V1! It's very funny as well as good when it comes to introducing us to the cast. However, I'd probably change it so Cuddles is more unlikeable since as of right now there's not much to hate him for. I'd also change it so the operation was more... brutal. Regarding the "things wrong with v4" post id like to correct something! The last page of v4 actually came out on Jan 17th on patreon, so it was finished before March. And Kneeby + crew was absolutely speedrunning through v4 the entire time, I feel like on the patreon kit mentioned it was finished even before it finished posting because pages were coming out daily for a week or so but I don't really feel like trying to find if kit actually said that. Just a little tidbit tho (I hope this isn't bad to share patreon stuff about since it's not. Actually a spoiler)

however, i still think some of my point still stands. since around v3 (2022), barry has been drawn skinny consistently, and it wasn't until 2024 that that was fixed. that's two years of fans being told a character is supposed to be fat, but the creator kitself not even putting in the time or effort to draw it. of course a lot of the fandom draws barry skinny! he was skinny for a while! to the point where there was even a popular fan theory that the hospital was starving him, and that's why he lost weight! but no, he was always supposed to be fat. personally, i would've ran with the theory, because the fact that you just... stopped drawing your character accurately? is really embarrassing. i'm not an artist, but kittycorn has shown in the past kit can draw fat people, and kit can now suddenly draw fat people again. it's strange that there was a break like that.

the only reason i know taffy luck is supposed to be tough luck is because i found an ask about it. don't feel bad, it's just a poorly done pun.

my favorite pun in all of sparklecare, however, is nurse pinata's. his full name is lee pinata heere, and the pun is leapin' outta here. it's so good, i don't care that kittycorn didn't make the character. more puns like that, please.
