#all versions of Spock are cats

Yes, we are of one mind: in TOS Spock is a black cat. He's aloof and mysterious and his people find it hard to predict his comings and goings. In SNW he's a bit of a dumb orange boicat who struggles with doors (emotions) and needs a little more help from his people.

I've finally found the perfect, concise words to explain how SNW Spock is fundamentally different from TOS Spock. Spock always reminds me of a cat in mannerism and characterization.

In TOS he's a black cat and in SNW he's an orange cat.

I will not elaborate. Change my mind.

friend to all children ; a character who is fond of and has a soft spot for children. bonus points if the kids like the character back. overlaps with wouldn't hurt a child, as characters who fit this trope not only refuse to injure children, but would go out of their way to protect children if it was necessary. gods help you if you're dumb enough to harm a child in the presence of someone with this character trait. they will not forgive you, ever. 

kindhearted cat lover ; it has commonly been said that the dog is man's best friend, but there are many people out there who prefer company of a more feline variety. unlike the above mentioned evil and crazy versions of the cat loving tropes, these characters have an honest affection for cats and are usually decent individuals themselves. the range of love for cats in these characters runs a wide spectrum. some people simply have a cat as their best friend or just adore them for their inherent cute factor.

real men cook ; everybody has to eat, which means, oftentimes, somebody has to cook. while it is often the job of the lady of the house to prepare delicious meals (or to at least try to), you can also count on seeing the men taking care of this. expect him to be flipping burgers or steaks on a grill, preparing food on the trail for the rest of the team, or preparing a meal to impress a female companion.

situational sociability ; a character with situational sociability is someone whose ability to socialize with others can vary depending on the circumstances. said person may be a shrinking violet with strangers, but more talkative with true companions. the core element of the trope is that the individual's attitude changes drastically in private compared to in public or when able to speak anonymously.

the mccoy ; the mccoy is another part of the freudian trio, along with the kirk and the spock. (specifically, the id.) where the former is rational and intuitive, and the latter is cold and logical, the mccoy is emotional and humanistic. he cares about others deeply; for him doing the right thing is not a question of convenience or moral relativity, but about the concrete reality right now. if the mccoy is placed in front of the to be lawful or good choice, he will always choose the "good" option in a heartbeat.

Been a minute...

...since I read this old buzzfeed article about Black women writing fanfiction (specifically The Walking Dead/Richonne).

This was back in 2016, so the fandoms discussed are all IR pairings. Would love to see one written about the Black Panther fandom and Black women writing about Black characters being with other Black characters.

It's always fun to look back at different eras. I was getting back into my Star Trek Uhura/Spock reading groove back then and started slowly scribbling a few things myself.

One of these days I may actually write about the BP fandom myself because I jumped in after the initial start months later with my niche N'Jobu fics, so I missed out on being in the bigger mixes like T'Challa or Killmonger. I missed all the fandom drama wars initially because only a few people were reading my fics and I never got traction in my tags and barely had my N'Jobu fics reblogged. It wasn't until I wrote "Forty-Seven G" that I began to get some circulation in the Killmonger streets.

I enjoyed the creative variety of tales Black women/Black Queer Fam were churning out in the Black Panther fandom. Reimagining Killmonger as Tarzan ( I know it sounds sketchy, lol, but that good sis made it so enjoyable and plausible). Having T'Challa and Killmonger have the ability to turn into panthers. Some stories gave them tails and actual panther/ cat behaviors. College life. Killmonger's time in the military or with Linda as a mercenary. Versions of what Killmonger would've been like had N'Jobu taken him home. Entire worldviews told from Shuri or Okoye's eyes. Stories about T'Challa and Nakia getting back together. Storm and T'Challa and Nakia. Storm and Killmonger. Killmonger paired with M'Baku. M'Baku falling for Okoye.

There were some folks who took it into areas of ick and discomfort with pairings that elicited backlash, conversations, heated debates, anger, and even disgust. I just appreciate that it was all out there for people to see. It was one of the most intriguing eras of Black Fandom that strictly dealt with a wholly Black world. Even white folks and other non-Black folks dipped into our waters and had the audacity to center their white women as queens of Wakanda---chile--, and got mad when we snickered, snorted, or stood up for centering Blackness without whiteness ever being present in our stories.

Anyhoo, if you want to read an interesting snapshot of Black women fanfic writers (many who aren't writing anymore or rarely update) check it out HERE. Most of it is about Richonne, and I like I said before, it mainly details fandoms that had a Black woman paired with a white man.

❄️️ Wonderful Boy - Star Trek AOS - Jim Kirk/Spock + Jim Kirk/Bones

Jim wakes up in the new version of reality and he’s trying to find his place. Meanwhile, his relationships with Bones and Spock are strained as he works to reconcile the shift in status quo. Bones doesn’t stroke his hair back at night just to see his eyes better. Spock stands a little too close and keeps making abortive movements like he’s about to reach out. Jim can sympathise, but it’s still weird to have affection cut off from everyone but the one person who’s always given him a cold shoulder. OR AOS Jim wakes up in a world where his father didn't die on the Kelvin, his crew are polite but not personal, and he's never stepped foot on Tarsus IV. Gosh do I have a type and they're all Old Men and Tragic Ladies my beloved. Let's go!! 1. Varric Tethras (Dragon Age 2): he shot right through my heart with that crossbow THE LITERAL SECOND he came on screen and I've been cursing Bioware ever since. He is a nonromanceable short king and I have never wanted anyone more thx. 2. Nakmor Drack (Mass Effect Andromeda): the Tempest Crew is so freaking charming, and while I love my jelly fish cat aliens the Angara, my favorite character is absolutely this old cantakerous grandpa Krogan. Whom, much like Wrex, I wish I could romance. (p.s. there is a TEASE of a flirt option and u can imagine how little that helped my case) 3. Spock (literally every Star Trek iteration): He is my Everything. Nemoy, Quinto, and Peck all bring something unique to the character's portrayal. I love him in every universe and I can never get enough of this EMOTIONALLY COMPROMISED NERD.

Alicent Hightower (House of the Dragon): one half of my divorced lesbinems and I feel so much for her and the tragedy/complexity of both her character and the heartwrenching slow decay of her r/s with Rhaenyra. I cannot wait for S2. 5. Aerith Gainsborough (Final Fantasy VII): ooooough, beautiful, tragic, kind, funny, cool flower seller of my life. Remake!Aerith particularly stole my heart along with the show. There is this sad, beguiling mystery about her that draws you in, and she is so cheerful in spite of it all. I can't wait for Rebirth but also I am terrified lol. 6. Yennefer of Vengerberg (The Witcher): "How ravishing she is, he thought. Everything about her is ravishing. And menacing. Those colours of hers; that contrast of black and white. Beauty and menace. Her raven-black, natural curls. Her cheekbones, pronounced, emphasising a wrinkle, which her smile – if she deigned to smile – created beside her mouth, wonderfully narrow and pale beneath her lipstick…" I mean. C'mon. That is MY WIFE etc, copy paste rj's exact blurb. Anya Chalotra is the perfect Yen. She is everything and deserves the world and I will glady let her burn it all down and murder me if she wants to. 7. Zero (Final Fantasy XIV): [Endwalker patch spoilers!] who doesn't love an autistic badass goth half-human half-voidsent who has lived as a monster for so long she forgot her own identity and is learning how to be human again and finding her humanity via the power of friendship and delicious food, like. I needed more of her and I miss her already!!!

8. Kim Wexler (Better Call Saul): omg so hard to pick just one from this show (ilu nacho), but Kim Wexler SUCKER PUNCHES U IN THE THROAT with her awesomeness. She is this extremely competent, understated cool, calculating yet caring and earnest character who compliments Jimmy so well and whose nuances her amazing actress Rhea Seehorn manages to convey so masterfully. She is also tragic af, but hello it's Breaking Bad prequel lol. On that note... 9. Kim Kitsuragi (Disco Elysium): DOUBLE KIM WHAMMY!!! They're so alike it's not even funny. I'd say Kim has the stronger moral center between the two, but I love them for many of the same reasons. He is also extremely competent, understated cool, with a side of being totally game for Harry's antics once he warms up to him (my Harry build was 'himbo' so he did a lot of dumb shit but he was nice). 10. Irving Bailiff (Severance): firstable, if you haven't seen Severance yet, please do yourself the favor and don't let me spoil this for u!! Irving Bailiff is an Experience. He is a stickler for the rules and very much a stick in the mud compared to his colleagues, but his true self leaks into this version of himself slowly at first, then in surprising bursts of rebellion that become clear at the end when it is shown that his Outtie/true self is actively trying to bring Lumon down like a TOTAL FUCKING BADASS in the most delightful reveal. Also he has a whirlwind romance with another old man played by Christopher Walken.

Chekov: Eurasian pine marten. I originally had him be a Siberian Lynx (since he’s from Russia) but it didn’t quite work. Chekov needs to be a small lanky boy and that is not what lynxes are. Pine martens, however…

After all, he’d seen Tweak’s work firsthand. The Octonauts would be in good care with her as its engineer.

Similar to Barnacles, Chekov was an old student of Professor Natquik. He’s always boasting about how everything great was invented in Russia.

Voyager’s Doctor was modeled after one of Peso’s many cousins. Despite being a program of a social species, he does have trouble actually socializing.

Jadzia is one of Dashi’s friends from school.

Ben Sisko and Ranger Marsh have been friends for a long time. And their kids get along quite well! Tweak is older than Jake by quite a bit.

Bashir is one of Shellington’s old classmates. The two of them bonded over their love of science and their sea otter heritage.

Post-Into Darkness, both Spock and Nyota find themselves torn about their feelings toward Jim, feelings awakened by James's tragic brush with death. Feelings growing as days pass, and closeness with a weak James facing rehabilitation. Each of them face their conflicting feelings on their own, until Nyota decides it's time to talk to Spock. It's a shock for her to discover that he too is feeling pulled in two opposite directions, the one who leads to Nyota (the woman he loves) and the one who leads to James (a man for whom he's harboring many different emotions). Neither wish to break their relationship, neither feel they'll be able to stop the growing love for James Kirk. Eventually they find a solution to the conundrum: include James in their romantic life. If James agrees, that's all.

Yes, they are in a very balanced polyamorous relationship and they are very happy about it.

This manip had been planned back in 2015 (or even before). All necessary pics were collected back then. Skip to 2023. One of the people I follow in Tumblr reblogs a post from @ksspringfever. The curiosity killed the cat and I took a look at the prompts. I happen into one asking for a Spirkxothers, with a preference for either McSpirk or Spihura. Bam. I love the threesome so much that I jumped on the idea... completely missing that the person asked for a fic. ahahah. But at least, not without hurdles, I sat down and made a manip - the first in months. Which makes the effort worthy. A kind admin reached out to reassure me I could post it anyway, so here I am.

I have other pics that, in an alternate timeline in which I am productive, would be turned into Space Threesome. There might be a chance for another from the same tv show, same setting (a bed) but different shooting set - possibly different season. But the one I irk to do the most, and I hope to make, will be an explicit bisexual threesome with pegging. Don't hold your breath though.

Tec stuffs (aka Behind The Manip) Most of the time expensive part of manipping had been already take care of in 2015, I already had a couple of pic per actor ready to select from. Not to say the manip was easier. The original pic featured a big copyright logo that had to be removed by painstaking and precise use of cloning brush. Then it was the selection of the best faces and the irking action of actually fitting the faces. Zoe and Pine were easy, all things considered (the woman's hair had to be fixed, the man's face partially covered, shadows fixed). But then comes Zachary Fucking Quinto, the guy with the most brushy and biggest brows this side of Hollywood. The original actor held his head in a very unique position, and fit Zachary wasn't easy, especially on the neck. But then... Spock-ize Zachary *insert crying emoji here*. The worst were the hair. I'm still not happy, but I tried the best I could. I'm still torn on this manip. One on side I like it, on another I'm not convinced of it. But I know it's all fault of the original pic, which had bad light.

💯 HUNDRED POINTS SYMBOL — share three random facts about your oc that others may not know. 1: When not regressed, Cooper doesn't really like dinosaurs that much. They're pretty neat, but he doesn't love them the way he does when regressed! 2: Cooper does not acknowledge nicknames but he loves them so much but he doesnt usually give any indication of it <3 however if any of his friends/cg/babysitters think he's slipping, they'll toss in an experimental nickname. If something else suddenly gets very interesting, it's usually a sure sign :P (Super Duper Cooper is like 100% a good go to esp if he's feelin a bit cranky, just bc its silly) 3: Do not leave Puppy Cooper alone, even if he insists its fine. He will be the saddest puppy ever and you WILL feel bad abt it. 🐈 CAT — does your oc prefer a wide circle of friends or a few close friends? Few close friends! Ward wormed his way into Cooper's non-existence social group and by proxy, Cooper eventually became closer w Bones, Kirk, and Spock. They're def a bit more reserved than Ward is around the three of them (jesus cooper thats OUR CAPTAIN.) but he's not super closed off to them anymore! usually.

🍝 SPAGHETTI — what is/are your oc's favorite food(s)? Cooper is Very. VERY picky. is better at eating multiple small snakc throughout the day, usually going for something like a banana, apples + caramel, single-serving boxes of cereal, those little "adult" versions of lunchables. Doesnt mind most veggies as long as they arent mushy! If you give cooper a mushy food, they will be like "incorrect. we are enemies now" TLDR: Uhhh more like tolerated foods than fav foods! Granola bars of various kinds are almost always a safe bet

🤔 THINKING FACE — what are some of your oc's quirks/mannerisms? Cooper talks to the machines he's fixing! He very much agrees w/ Scotty's sentiment that the Enterprise is a "Fine lady" and treats all the malfunctioning equipment like it needs some good ol TLC. Will get very mad if they see you smack the consoles

Shen Yuan!Shen Qingqiu/Luo Binghe (Scum Villain's Self-Saving System) - There are so many ways they shouldn't work, but they make it work. There's a lot of potential for variety when it comes to this pairing, which makes it interesting. Does LBH know about transmigration? How involved with demon realm politics is SQQ? How does everyone around them deal with the relationship? It's a very fun dynamic.

Serah Farron/Hope Estheim (Final Fantasy 13-2) - Listen, I just think they would be good together okay? I feel like Serah and Snow are great short-term, but would drive each other crazy long-term. Serah and Hope worked really well together in 13-2. Unfortunately, it's not exactly a common ship.

James T. Kirk/Spock (Star Trek) - Complex characters with strong cultural differences who nonetheless love and respect each other? With multiple versions across different canons to play with? *chef's kiss*

(Suzu joins the VR internet world and accidentally becomes a pop music sensation. Crosses paths with an aggressive user being hunted by self-stylized disciplinary mobs. Her experiences allow her to deal with her own RL trauma, as well as help the aggressive user with his. Movie purposefully riffs on Disney's Beauty and the Beast elements.)

3 Ships:  Theron x Smuggler (mine ranks high for obvious and selfish reasons, hehe), Batman x Wonder Woman (JLU cartoon, not live action dynamic), and  Miss Fisher/Jack Robinson. 

First Ship:   Weirdly, it was probably Spock/Zarabeth from not only the original Star Trek series, but AC Crispin’s books about their theoretical son. I think I was 11?  I haven’t thought of the ship in ages, though.  Spock was my first character that I latched onto, so I ran through all his ships at one point, including Kirk/Spock and Spock/Saavik  (which I sorta plotted a whole fic for that has never come to fruition). But it’s like how an 11 year old in the 90s ships things.  FF.net and AO3 did not exist, and I visited the Beanie Baby website daily with my mother’s supervision. 

Currently Consuming:   Tazo cha tea mix with a cup of milk and 2 pieces of sourdough with strawberry Jam.

Currently Watching:   At this second?  Pete the Cat, specifically a couple of eps that convey difference is good.

Last Movie:  Oh, geez, probably Miracle on 34th Street in B&W.  I don’t consume film like I did in college, which was many movies a week (as a film student, this wasn’t a surprise)

Currently Reading:  Honestly, a world history textbook to try to give my course more coverage beyond the main Cold War. I’m trying to work in more Africa and South America.  I’m sad I had to drop the Space Race (again, Star Trek fan), but that really is too much time about USSR vs US that could be spent elsewhere.  I know, super boring. 

Currently Craving:  Popcorn.  It’s a trigger food for my UC.  I’ve tried the air puffed substitutes for popcorn...and nothing compares to that dreadful artificial butter which is the best taste in the world if you’re in the mood.  Which I am, sadly.

ttrpg and wargamer - not to mention science fiction and fantasy. I exhausted the library's supply of decent novels and short stories in this genre, and argued with the school librarian about what science fiction actually was. She said it was anything with spaceships, that sort of thing. I said it had to be more rigorous than that. Years later, I read an essay by Isaac Asimov about how Star Wars, whilst entertaining, was not science fiction, and it really clicked.

Shoving a UFO in it doesn't make it science fiction. At best, it's science fantasy unless it actually tries to be somewhat consistent with science.

Star Trek TOS is an example of soft science fiction. It's speculative, and some of the science is wrong by today's standards, but they made the honest attempt most of the time to explore things by logic. Example:

As Scott assesses the damage, he finds that the Galileo has lost a great deal of fuel – so much that they would be unable to reach escape velocity, and to even reach orbit they would need to leave at least five hundred pounds lighter than when they arrived.

Noting that very little of the equipment on board is dispensable, and that five hundred pounds roughly equals the weight of three grown adults, Spock prepares himself for the difficult decision of which three crewmen to leave behind in order that the rest may survive.

Now Spock is behaving perfectly rationally, and that is hard for humans, who don't like knowing that some lives are more important than others. If this was a typical tv show, then the crew would draw lots - and probably be saved by a deus ex machina so the sacrifice would not have to take place. Instead we see two side - the rational and the emotional - at conflict. The external horror is almost irrelevant. Do you do the rational thing, or the thing that FEELS right? They are not always the same thing. The trolley problem is there for a reason. Real life often requires those in power to make the choice as to who lives and who dies. Whereas horror appeals to the irrational - the part of our brain that is much older and primal.

In modern life, a lot of us live our lives very safely. Without real dangers, we invent the illusion of danger, so that we can have the thrill of terror in a safe way.

It's the same way that cats will play chase. They want that thrill, that momentary terror, the brief pretend they are in real danger. Part of our brains are still stuck in the darkness of the neolithic, and know that monsters are out there and we should be afraid. This is why I get annoyed at people who insist Frankenstein is science fiction.

It fails the intent check. The original version was an entry in a horror story competition, and I think it won. The author didn't intend to write anything that was rigorous or rational. The science makes no sense and the author didn't care and the audience didn't care. It was a spooky tale. If you do something against God's will, you will be punished.

And hundreds or even thousands of horror stories were inspired by it.

Not a lot of science fiction though. Why? Because we know, rationally, that bringing someone back from the dead doesn't make them evil. That's an appeal to our instinctual fears, the xenophobia of the uncanny valley. We bring people back from "the dead" all the time.

In fact, WE KNOW FULL WELL that "death" is often reversible. Interruptions in mind are mundane. We sleep, we have orgasms.

There are times when we are not. And we were dead before we were alive. Death is not intrinsically evil - except to our irrational instincts.

This is what I loved about Terry Pratchett. He understood Death, and wrote stories where the dead would come back, but they were just dead. They were not more evil because dead.

Being a zombie, in Pratchett's world, mean you had the inconvenience of having to sew parts back on. You didn't get hungry for flesh, because hunger is a sign of being alive. There was one story where a huge number of zombies suddenly appeared. And almost every one just wanted to do the stuff they did as living people. They wanted to take care of things, make sure their relatives were ok, the cats were fed and so on, and then go back to being dead. A few decided to stick around and see what happened next. But by and large, being undead didn't make you evil any more than being alive did. You were still, deep down, the same being. That's very different to a horror story, because the author wants you to be afraid - and the audience usually pays for that experience. Whereas science fiction might present a horrible experience but gives you the opportunity for rationality to overcome it.

There are many horror elements to "The Expanse", for example, and sometimes the only thing you can do is rationally accept that you did your best, and will die. And one of the important characters does die, and effectively goes to Hell, and is tortured - but still rationally deals with the situation, and eventually triumphs.

I think that's the benefit of science fiction. And I think it's a shame that we live in a time that seems almost devoid of the stuff. We have a lot of things that superficially look like science fiction ...

but aren't. Why? Because there's no logic. Suddenly a light saber is barely an inconvenience, you just take a panadol and walk it off.

But our rational minds know that makes no sense. We saw them melting things routinely back in the days Star Wars was written by rational people.

In classic Star Wars, the only time someone survived was when it cut off a limb, thus only having brief contact with flesh. Even then the survivor was usually strong in the force, and we certainly saw jedis etc die even so.

Even when writing science fantasy, Star Wars writers tried to be internally consistent. That was pretty much abandoned and now under Disney the audience has almost given up on the franchise, because the writers are irrational or at least are writing as if it was just horror or light whimsical fantasy, and don't bother with rigour at all.

We have witches and zombies. And the audience numbers are dying, because they know the genre has been abandoned. THAT AIN'T STAR WARS. The same audience would be fine walking out and watching some creation that has witches and/or zombies because it is consistent.

So - yeah - Ich Bin Ein Nerd. I care about this stuff. Always did. The boy arguing with the librarian is the man arguing with the Disney executives. And I gotta say, even if you don't care, you would think the Hollywood types would, because they used to make money when they played by my rules, and now they just keep losing money, then ignoring the lessons and losing even more.

With some exceptions. There are some signs of life returning to the corpse.

Maybe Frankenstein will rise, get up, and go put on the kettle for a nice cup of tea.

Maybe Death will come for a visit, and teach you, not just to respect him, but to embrace life, and live as hard and deep as you can.
