Valentine's Day but everyone wants to kiss Ben

Over a week late and it was a lot of work but I'm happy with the end result!

Inspired by galaxysunset10's Valentine's Day art and this drawing by Kuzuyku.

(Tee hee this is so cute. Since you put Ben and not BEN, I’m going to talk about the 12 year old boy and not the evil entity.)

•Since Sally and Ben both died pretty long ago they’re actually more mature than they look

• Sally for nostalgias sake, loves to play tea party still

•After all tea party was her favorite when she was alive in the 60s!

•Ben being born in the 90s and a boy who didn’t play it when he was alive, doesn’t fully get it, but joins her anyway. It’s like having a sister for him

• Sally who was born in the late 50s and died in the late 60s, doesn’t understand video games all that well but still plays with Ben the best she can

• Ben will sometimes let her win because he likes seeing her smile and cheer

• Ben loves playing hide and seek with her (fun fact it’s canon that Ben loves playing hide and seek :3)

• Sally kinda cheats by turning invisible though

• They find comfort in each other, both of them being children who were lonely and being tricked into dying

• They feel normal with each other, as if they never died and have a chance at growing up and being normal

• They stay up all night eat candy and watch their favorite movies together

• No need for health and sleep when you’re both already dead!

• Since they’re from different decades the movie choices are very different with all of Sally’s favorite movies being from the 40s-early 60s and Ben’s being from the 90s-early 2000s

• It’s like stepping into different decades for both of them and they love learning about each others time periods

• Despite popular belief, Ben’s actually a quiet and sweet kid

• Sally does more haunting than he does, most of his haunting is unintentional

• But he does watch her, thinks it’s interesting how scared people get.

• She’s just a little girl, right? What’s so scary about her? (She literally shows up in the darkness, bloody and talking in a creepy voice saying “play with me”) but they’re just overreacting! She’s totally normal in his eyes.

•Sally draws Ben pictures a lot!

• If Ben’s playing an RPG and he has the option to make his party members look how he wants them too, he’ll always base them off Sally and shows her

• This makes her beam with joy every time!

•Sally will watch him play video games and ask questions about literally everything

• He’ll answer all of them, he loves talking about video games and everything in them anyway and it makes him happy that Sally is interested

• Video games were his absolute favorite thing when he was alive that hasn’t changed now that he’s dead

• Sally knows that so she will absolutely let him talk forever about them, especially about how much he loves Link

• Sally’s favorite food is Lady Fingers

• Ben’s favorite is Pizza Rolls

• So they often bring each other those foods as presents

• (Ben has to ‘borrow’ lady fingers from the bakery in town, he doesn’t know how to make them lol)

• Sally and Ben don’t knock to enter each others rooms, they just appear like the ghosts they are

• Since Ben had trouble making friends growing up, he’s so grateful for Sally

• Sally’s grateful for him too, she feels so safe around him

• They’re basically attached at the hip

Redmayne Brothers breakdown?

Phew, okay, here we go! Three characters to answer for, I love you for asking this, haha.

Johnnie

How I feel about this character: My precious baby boy, I adore him. Reckless perfect terrible child. Pat him on the head, he brings so much joy.

Ship romantically: None in canon. Johnnie/his ego, Johnnie/hedonism, Johnnie/so many girls he doesn't remember the names of and maybe a few he does but not in a serious way. He's a ladies boy, or certainly thinks of himself that way, and none of it is romance but it is very definitely lust and pleasure.

Also thanks to some very long-running eternally-ongoing shenanigans I ship him with Chrissy Cunningham from Stranger Things. @spectromagic knows.

Non-romantic OTP: Man it's not an OTP it's just these three brothers and their dynamic. I love them all even if it's mostly headcanon (BEN!!! PLEASE GIVE US MORE). I think they've all leaned on each other a lot over the years and Johnnie looks up to Dale and Alex so much. I can only imagine how absolutely devastated they are by his death (BEN!! GIVE) and that tragedy feeds me.

Unpopular opinion: I don't care at all for the Buck/Johnnie ship. Doesn't work for me. Buck is very clearly obsessed with Lee to the point of absolute ruin. I think the cigarette scene was mostly meant as a way to show that Buck can interact with the ghosts and also that he's super freaked out by this (at first) but then later just like, accepting of it. Does not read as shippy to me.

One thing I wish would happen/had happened with this character in canon: Oh I desperately hope we run into him again, causing trouble out there in ghost form, because clearly we know he's still around. Also I absolutely MUST know more about his whole backstory and also whatever he saw in his visions and also whatever he experienced while black-brained because I live and die for cosmic horror and you know that's some really horrific shit.

Dale

How I feel about him: Without dumping paragraphs of headcanon here, good lord I adore Dale. We know he's brilliantly creative when it comes to music, and must have quite the force of personality also to be a co-leader of the gang. There's so much there to draw from, and then we also know (or it's implied, I guess) that a lot of the music that survives to the modern era via Lord Huron covers was massively inspired by Johnnie's death, maybe as a way to cope. I feel for him so much. Poor Dale.

Ship romantically: Look we have nothing to go off of, but if I had to name names I'd just go with the lovely Ms. Penny Clicks there at his side in the Fool for Love MV. In my head they had a thing once and are now buddies that absolutely lean on each other a lot, where he trusts her to get shit done that needs to get done. Big fan of the lady gang members as a whole.

Part of me also wants to ship him with Rigo but that isn't fair because it's purely invented and Rigo is like, dead or vanished anyway and so the only purpose that serves is to dump more trauma on his head.

One thing I wish would happen/had happened with this character in canon: Hey Ben can you give us more, thanks. I would like more. At least mention him eventually again since his name hasn't come up since Strange Trails and it's killing me.

Alex

How I feel about this character: The absolute pillar of these three, my third best boy, Alex I adore you so much. When there is no dad you must become the dad. Strength both physically and mentally. His crew has so much respect for him, Johnnie adores him, you know that he's always doing his absolute best to make sure everyone has what they need and are causing the most havoc in the right ways at all times. Champion. In my head he's almost religiously dedicated to the World Ender and has taken this leadership role very seriously. He's like a paladin but of a violent street gang that's part cult to some unearthly being. So good. So good.

Ship romantically: I accidentally started shipping him with Moonbeam in like a nonromantic but FWB way and I'm obsessed with this dynamic now. He doesn't trust many people but he does trust her, and she's more than earned it.

Unpopular opinion: Buddy who else even has opinions about Alex, we barely have anything on him, I'm glad that my head is a lively place full of extrapolation and daydreams.

One thing I wish would happen/had happened with this character in canon: What the FUCK he didn't even get a single speaking line??? Peter Mendoza is such a sweetheart and a talented actor and he didn't even get a line??? Wasted opportunity. Bring him back. Let's see the violence he will unleash on Z'Oiseau following Johnnie's death. The man is an absolute force of nature leading LA's most feared gang. I need to see this desperately.

Seeing you talk about Bevin in amazing omg...I remember watching Ben 10 as all the series were airing, and AF and UA had me in such a Bevin chokehold. My bff and I spent an embarrassingly long amount of time rewinding the DVR in the ep when Ben like falls in Kevin's lap in the pond hahaha truly one of my first maaaajor slash ships and I do remember it being fairly popular-ish on fanfic.net and I think deviantart, but I was disappointed to see it wasn't like that on tumblr, which is strange since it's a friends to enemies to friends ship that tumblr loves so much lmao and the lack of fics on ao3 is sad :( but it's really cool to see people still love them <3

Hello, noticed you ship spock/uhura from the trek series, i was going to ask have you seen the new show strange new worlds and what are your thoughts about the uhura and the casting. please feel free to be honest. i personally think she is totally miscast and looks like a masculine man and they have downgraded uhura on the show so she is no threat to anyone, reason why the uhura in snw is presented as a very ugly masculine teenager. however if u voice that opinion you are called racist and sexist. i hope all uhura fans can begin to speak out more and be honest about uhura in strange new worlds

Yes, I have seen strange new worlds.

And, I'll be honest, I think Celia is an incredible cast for the role. They're an outspoken person with progressive morals who absolutely fits the legacy of Uhura as a character and the importance of Uhura as someone who challenges the social norms of the time.

As for looking like a "masculine man", I completely disagree. Snw Uhura's gender expression may challenge your perceptions of feminity, but I don't believe she's any less feminine in snw than in other series. She dresses in the "feminine" active duty uniform, wears stereotypically feminine accessories and dons a haircut that, as I've read and witnessed, is extremely popular among the black feminine community (as I white guy, I don't believe I have any right to speak to that authentically, however). A character could not be considered more "typically" feminine unless she adhered to the demeaning and misogynistic tropes of the twentieth century and earlier--such tropes might include "damsel in distress", "all she wants in life is to marry and have kids", "knows nothing/dense as a brick", etc.

I don't see how Uhura is and/or isn't a threat to anyone. And she certainly hasn't been "downgraded" in any way. Although we haven't much character development for her so far in snw, she's at least been given more of a backstory than in any previous series (albeit, it is a very typical family trauma trope, which is a little uncreative, imo). In the second episode, she expresses uncertainty as to her capabilities and her posting, then proceeds to save the day (demonstrating her genuine skill and intelligence and her importance and power as a character, independent of her womanhood). She is young, I'll give you that, but she's no teenager (especially not when compared to Wesley Crusher in tng) and she may have expressed insecurities, but this is to be expected of a fresh (or near fresh, idk) academy graduate who's been awarded an extremely prestigious posting. I would think it a little unrealistic were she not at least a little uncomfortable with her position, no matter how much she has worked for and earnt the position. This, in no way, diminishes her character, it only adds to her authentic characterisation if anything.

Lastly, she's not ugly. She's not at all ugly. She's gorgeous! Have you taken a look at the woman? She's a fashion sense and a beautiful array of facial expressions. And, separate from the character, Celia, too, is a splendid sight. They appear frequently happy, wear incredible outfits and speak out about what they believe in. What could be more beautiful? Though, of course, I understand that beauty is subjective. But to call her "a very ugly masculine teenager" is incredibly minimalising of Uhura as a character and of Celia as a person. To not at least appreciate her style and effort or, at least, respect her with human decency- Would you tell someone to their face that they're "a very ugly masculine teenager"? I reckon not.

I, in no way, mean to label you as "racist and sexist", as your experience with those of my opinion might suggest, though I do believe you should reconsider your perceptions of feminity and of gender expression. Perhaps, you may benefit from a more open mind toward such matters or, simply, a more progressive mindset. If both are too challenging, at least live by the maxim "live and let live" and not judge her for her appearance. To not do so is plain rude and disrespectful.

so glad i found someone who also dislikes karen page. i loved daredevil and the punisher, and thought the plotlines and the acting was fantastic in both, apart from one outlier. Karen. She annoyed me so so much and the acting was just bad. It was all little petty glances and hair flips and sighing. Unfortunately when watching daredevil she’s hard to avoid but when im rewatching the punisher I skip her scenes if possible. All the other well done characters and good acting around her make her seem even worse. I also cant stand Kastle as a ship, idc how popular it is I greatly dislike it. Karen anti forever sorry not sorry.

exactly, she's so bad, and she always looks and acts the exact same way, no matter what the scene warrants, not to mention how she just always inserts herself in every situation and takes charge for some reason? also, she got Ben killed and then took his job that she was suddenly amazing at?? wtf 😂

yeah, when I got like halfway through season 2, I had to put the playback speed the highest it could be during her scenes 😂 thankfully it was still on Netflix so that was an option, but I can't bring myself to rewatch on D+ until they add the playback speed button haha

she's easily the worst actress on both shows, and the worst character I've ever seen in anything 😂

I never saw why people ship her with Frank, or with Matt for that matter - there's no chemistry whatsoever, especially from her side - season 2 of daredevil is my fave, but the beginning with Karen and Matt "dating" is just the worst 🤢🤮

I've never hated a character this much, and I've never really been an anti anything, but honestly, I'm as anti Karen Page as it can get 😂😂

how they’d be introduced: 

       The middle of s1 when Ben and Caleb are at camp than traveling around, in the middle of the whole Sackett thing and the forming of the Culper Ring, there is an extra subplot where Ben suspects a spy is in camp and it adds more motivation for why the ring should be formed that if a spy is in the enemy camp, imagine what it would be like outside of camp sort of deal. Lydia shows up right at the tail end of an episode with a cliffhanger vibe to it where she comes up to Sackett and Ben and tells them that she has information on the spy in camp. It’s this twist that gets people on tumblr wondering who she is. (I’m using her main verse for this because it makes the most sense and has less of an impact on the turn timeline overall).

       Her first moment really interacting with Ben is arguing with him lmao.

who the fandom ships them with:

       I feel like at first, people were annoyed and assumed there was going to be a love triangle that would rival the Abe/Anna stuff happening in s1 and something may have been in the works, but seeing the huge dislike of it: the writers scrapped the idea. I feel like Lydia would have more ships in s2 or s3 when her character is given more screen time overall. Ben/Lydia would be the most popular since those two interact the most. 

       But as the turn fandom goes, she’s thrown into a bunch of different ships: Caleb/Lydia, Bradford/Lydia, etc, etc. Even Hewlett/Lydia have a fanfic somewhere. Some small number of people ship Abe/Lydia for an enemies to lovers fanfic, but Ben/Lydia is the most popular. Some people have written characterization pieces for Lydia that show her relationship with Laurence before his death after the turn writers incorporate a flashback of his death to add more development for Lydia’s character to the audience and to show the impact of his death..

why the fandom loves them: 

       At first, the fandom was mixed on if they liked her or not, but as the seasons went on, more became more sympathetic at her and distanced themselves from “Oh she’s just a love interest for Ben (or for this other character).” Either when she punches Bradford or when she roasts Abe in an argument, the fandom all begin to really love her. The fandom loves her for her bravery, the refreshing characterization of her character, and how developed her character is overall with her past. Some might admire the turn writers for trying to incorporate her ADHD in a time where that wasn’t well known and making it realistic to the time period. I have a little headcanon that people would like Lydia a little more by her attire because she was a seamstress before she got involved in the culper ring and something of her making a dress for Anna or Mary would make people warm up to her more.

why the fandom hates them

       Some are really annoyed by her character overall and find her short temper to be childish and they think she is a very whiny character overall that’s just used for filler or for a love interest for whatever canon character. Some people think she’s a copy of another character or find her character to be pointless in the plot because she wasn’t a real figure in history. They also find it unrealistic why she would be in the spy ring anyway.

what the cast relationship would be like:

       Overall, the turn cast seems really close, but I’m not sure if M.erve B.oluğur speaks English. I’m going to assume she does, but I have only seen interviews where she is only speaking in her native language, Turkish. So I’m not sure what her personality is like because of that, but like the rest, she appears in cast photos and interacts with the actors on twitter. I think if the turn writers were going in a romantic route with her and another character, they would try to pair them more often together in photos because: marketing. She would have inside jokes with the cast that she incorporates in her tweets and if she found anything related to the culper ring or any of the turn characters, she would tag the cast member in her post.

       What would be funny as hell would be if Merve and Jamie were close while Abe and Lydia literally hate each other on screen.

what was their audition scene:

       The audition scene would be an argument between Abe and Lydia or an argument between her and Ben, mostly to see where Merve’s range is. The audition scene would be with Seth because Lydia is in camp for almost all of the show’s runtime, and since she’s the codebreaker, she has to interact with Ben a lot for that.

dependent upon the fandom, who they’d be on a press tour/at comic con with

       I don’t think the turn cast even went to comic con or did a press tour? They did some stuff around Richmond, but that location and online seemed their biggest promotion pieces other than individual interviews. Merve would be paired with Seth or any of the main culper ring characters (Heather, Jamie, Daniel, etc) because her character is heavily involved in the ring and in camp. Other than an au, she doesn’t go to Setauket. Maybe for a one off thing, she’s on that one podcast show where they talk about the episode after it aired with Sam, Daniel, Brian, or Meegan (because those are the only ones that were on it lmao) after there was an episode with both of their characters interacting in some way. 

if they spoil things

       I don’t think so? Again, I don’t know much about Lydia’s fc personality, but I doubt it. I’m not entirely sure, but the turn cast seemed to post more photos together than teasers (from what I have seen, I could be wrong). I didn’t get into turn until after it aired when it was still on netflix.

if the show/movie has ended, are they happy with their character’s ending and the ending at large

       So for Lydia’s ending, I guess it depends on if the writers wanted to be entirely historically accurate as they seemed to sorta do in the ending of s4 (outside of Hewlett & Abe, though Abe was a little more accurate). So any love interest she has in a show wouldn’t be endgame if they wanted to go that route, so I think from there, her storyline could go in multiple ways: she ends up single and is mentioned how she has gotten married in Abe’s letter, she’s killed off, or they just leave it open ended. I’m not sure what Merve’s personality is, but I think she would be more pleased with a happy ending than an ending where she’s killed off if she has been a current character for so long in all of the seasons.

tbh i really think it's just a personal thing where the vibes are a bit off for me with most of the ships, i just find most of them quite unnecessary almost as if people feel the story is missing a romantic aspect so they add it in via headcanons and shipping, which is completely fair enough and im glad they're having fun with that, i just don't particularly like the ships all that much.

it's not even really that i don't think they work, the characters are just very fanonised so sometimes it's just a 'he would not fucking say that' deal for me LMAO

HOWEVER i really agree about the variation between actors, i was like .notably more partial to javid in 92sies where i can really see both of them being queer whereas in the proshot i had the same reaction as you where ben frankhausers davey seemed much more queer to me than JJs jack

i think for sprace my main thing with it is that they just don't interact that much? like i don't really see the sprace ship as being those characters at all because apart from the little nod/smile in KONY and the jostling/joking together in the courtroom i didn't really see them together very often so i just don't really get why the ship is soo popular.

with blush yes it's cute and not harming anyone but i just honestly don't understand where it came from or why it's so huge like they're just two side characters to me so i don't get it .

i will also say though that it's been really interesting to talk to you about this ! and i've realised maybe i was a bit too uptight abt the ships earlier but i just don't get it!!! like idk i really just don't understand but well whatever that's the nature of fandom i guess

unpopular opinion but i really don't get why the main appeal of the newsies fandom is the shipping (im talking particularly javid sprace and blush bc that's what i see most of). like guys.. did we forget the plot.

I don't like (I actually hate 👀) Benji. A long rant.

Here I said it. And I'm gonna explain why, even though nobody asked for it 😂. (And I know I'm gonna receive hell for it lmao)

One argument that people like to use to justify their hatred for Kenji and Brooklynn is the 2 years age gap (just for the sake of being transparant, I personnally do not have a problem with it, it's legal and I could never have a problem with a two years age gap). But that on its own can be understandable, we all have different beliefs and that's fine...I'm not gonna try to make people change their beliefs. But I have a really hard time taking it from people who ship Ben and Kenji (and surprise surprise...most of the fandom do 🙃).

The problem people say they have with the age gap is the difference in maturity between the two. Which is a really real thing, and is the reason laws exist to protect kids from predators. But while that is a thing, I think a lot of the fandom CHOSE to ignore that everybody does evolves differently and that not everyone matures at the same age/pace. Saying that a gap in maturity is an ethical problem and going around shipping Ben and Kenji is the biggest mindf*ck ever.

And so this is my problem.

Ben is the most immature of the whole group. At least to the other characters, he is. He had his MOM calling the camp consellors to give them a list of things to do to make him feel confortable. Kenji is mad when Dave and Roxy leave them with crayons, asking "how old do they think we are/when was the last time you ever saw crayons" clearly indicating that he sees that as a kiddy activity...only to see ben drawing himself and bumpy with crayons. And let me tell you that the way he draws himself says a lot about his self perception. It looks like a kid with his baby dino. He clings onto kenji when he is scared of the story Darius is telling, story that does not seem scary at all. This is not a romantic moment, and I find extremly weird that people look at it that way, EDIT it that way. This just looks like a twelve years old clinging onto the most reassuring person around because he is scared at night. There are a LOT of moments where Kenji makes fun of Ben's immaturity/makes sneaky comments or is annoyed by it, but people turn it into some romantic thing ? Half (if not all) of their interactions are just this. I repeat, Ben clinging onto Kenji because he is scared and Kenji dealing with it because Ben stubbornly refuses to let go will never be romantic. At least to me.

Basically Ben's entire arc, from season 1, is that he needs to let go of his fears, (and probably his mom overshielding) to become his own person and MATURE...GROW UP and be self-reliant. And Kenji appears to be the oldest camper. Do the math.

That's why when I found out that it was the most popular ship in the fandom (there were only two seasons out at that time) I was genuinely PHASED.

Yes, Kenji cares about Ben, and yes, he was the most affected when he "died". But to me, it was because he finally started to like/accept Ben despite his childish behavior, exactly as in the older brother/annoying and overbearing little brother trope. And not to mention that it's later shown that he has a personal struggle with the idea of loosing people and death as seen by the way he reacted when Sammy was about to die. So it was really more about Kenji than Ben. Or maybe Kenji is in love with Ben and Sammy.

My problem with this ship is that people make their scenes to be something it's not and argue that it was being set up, that there was chemistry. When really... It.Was.Not.Set.Up.

And they have as much chemistry as a kid and his nanny can have.

The single idea that Kenji could be ATTRACTED to Ben in season one (the season where everyone started shipping them) should normally be disgusting to anyone watching. Because KENJI SEES HIM AS A KID. Which is the difference with him and Brooklynn. Everyone can have their problem with that, but the fact is that Kenji never ONCE refered to Brook as a kid/being childish nor made fun of her for that. Heck, in episode one he even singles out Darius as "the younger kid" when the three of them are together.

Which brings me to my point. A lot of people took the ages of the campers Dreamworks released, and ran with it without even a second thought. Watching season one, without that info - that is never clearly stated in canon, keep that in mind - (And funnily enough for all we know Ben could be like a month older than Brook since it was their age at a specific point in time but weirdly enough everybody chooses to ignore it) you CANNOT tell me that you'd find Ben to be even remotely older than Brook. When Ben and Kenji are together, it looks like a 18 years old standing next to a 12 years old. With Kenji and Brook, it looks like a 18 years old and a (minimum) 16 years old. I still think the ages they gave them are REALLY unrealistic but even if you consider them to be canon... doesn't change the fact that there is an enormous maturity gap btw Kenji and Ben which you need to be blind not to see. A gap that was and will always be bigger than the one btw Brook and Kenji.

I could go on and say that even after he comes back, he is still the most immature and only starts to evolve by the end of season 3 but I don't need to because this ship only "exists" in season 1 (and 2 but tbh the only scene they have for them is Kenji being happy and emotional that his friend is alive...and hugging him ? Heck, Darius and Ben reunion is ten times more impactful). Also, if Kenji suddenly started to have something for Ben in season 4 it would still creep me out ngl.

So yeah, I hate the fact that people hate a ship based on an hypothetical maturity gap btw two characters because of a two years (maybe one and a half) age gap but have no problem shipping a kid who thinks of himself that way with Kenji.

So I’ve been receiving way too many DM’s (on instagram)  asking why I don’t ship Bevi.. and how enemies to lovers was better than the jock falling for the nerd trope. And on how Paxton only liked Devi when he felt like it? and how Daxtons ship them only because Paxton is hot. So I thought I’d elaborate in this essay lmao. In my opinion..  Ben and Devi were more of Bully to Lovers than enemies to lovers. Enemies to lovers is when two people are on the opposite side.. Ben and Devi arnt on the opposite side.. they both are just too competitive and both of them want to be the best. Ben INITIATED all the fights.. Devi would be alone or doing something else but this dude would poke his nose in and insult her. He called her unfuckable.. and passed many racist comments, said she faked her paralysis? All of what Ben did affect Devi ALOT. It gave her hallucinations of her DEAD DAD. While all what Devi said to ben were just comebacks.. she obviously isn’t going to let some guy insult her and get on with it. Plus none of what Devi said even affected Ben in any way? Before we go on with how people feel bad for Ben because Shira (his girlfriend) is dating Ben for his money... Ben admitted to dating her for popularity so yeah I feel like most of the viewers are over sympathizing with Ben? Like having neglectful parents is a terrible terrible thing.. but they still seem to love him and provide him ALOT Also Ben’s character development was too rushed.. and the Bevi kiss was rushed as heck. . I don’t see them more than friends AT ALL. They both have a competitive nature, they both want to  top the class or wtv.. also remember how Devi threw and broke a lab apparatus when Ben scored a 99 and Devi had a 98? If they’re dating.. they’re still in school.. so how is that going to work out? I think they’re better off as friends with the competitive nature.. I feel like if they’re in a relationship they’d be forced to compromise and they wont be happy about it? Devi is already challenged by her mom and her cousin and the last thing she needs is a challenging boyfriend.. I feel like she’d be put under pressure or stress? I don’t know how to word it exactly but she does not handle anger, stress or pressure well. Sure Ben has done nice things for Devi too but he shouldn’t get to be her boyfriend just because he did something nice.. he has been terrible to her for 3/4th of the show. 

I feel like Paxton is a better relationship choice. After Ganesh Puja.. Devi is kicking lockers in aggression.. Paxton realizes she has a temper.. doesn’t judge her for it.. he asks Devi about her tradition and culture and gets to know more about her Indian background and .. the earlier part of the episode she mentions how she doesn’t like what she’s wearing (a saree) because its an Indian outfit and maybe she feels insecure.. and she also had a rough day but that little talk with Paxton cheers her up quickly, she kind of exploded on how people think she’s not enough Indian etc etc... He listens to her and calms her down “Eh, who cares what other people think.. you do you.. Also you look cool in that outfit”. I also found it cute how he was walking with his friends but leaves them and talks to Devi for a bit. Again.. Paxton was the only one who asked her why she got so close to the coyote. And she felt comfortable enough to tell him that she thought it was her dad.. Anyone would think Devi is crazy.. Devi herself thought Paxton would think she is crazy but he doesn’t judge her and simply says a “I feel you”. Many say Paxton is embarrassed of Devi? I don’t think soo.. he threw his arm around her, invited her to sit with his friends.. ADMITTED to the rumors about hooking up with Devi when they didn’t. He felt used and was upset but he still didn’t tell his own bestfriend Trent that he hadn’t hooked up with Devi. He still didn’t insult her or anything.. he just distanced himself. I feel like he’s the guy who doesn’t let people in easily? Like the second episode when he drives over to apologize in person.. he mentions “even people who I thought were friends bullied my sister a lot” Yeah he is the popular guy but he’s only seen with Marcus and Trent or alone. So he probably was hurt a lot that Devi used him and maybe something similar has happened to him in the past? Someone used him for his popularity and he got hurt? And he distanced himself.. like anyone. I can imagine how mad the fandom would be if the boy spread rumors about hooking up. Later Devi and Paxton are on talking terms again, and I like how he’s so excited to show Devi the pictures after the photoshoot and he and Trent are looking at them even when Devi is talking to Ben. Later again at the party when Fabiola popped off on Devi.. Paxton’s name was even dragged into the fight.. the whole school was watching but he still didn’t care, everyone, EVERYONE at the party were laughing at Devi when she fell in the pool.. even Paxton’s friends (Trent and a few people around him) but he still ran and pulled her out and if you re watch the scene people were still laughing when Paxton pulled her out. He offered her his sweats, waited around till she changed.. didn’t give a shit about the party and offered to drop her home and he asked her if she was okay and listens too her. He kissed her and they both looked thrilled and he leaves saying “See you Monday Devi”.. he had no intention of avoiding her.. but Devi left her dress behind in his car and he drove over to her house again probably to see her and hang out with her in the name of returning her dress..  and Nalini went off on him for no fault of his. She judged him for his looks and verbally attacked him. She’s been rude to him from the start and he’s been polite but this time she said such awful things, “I’m sure you have a busy day returning dresses to other smart girls whose futures you’re trying to ruin” IN WHAT WAY WAS THAT OK? I don’t blame him for being upset at all. He put himself out there and got hurt TWICE. I feel like he’s still learning to deal with his feelings.. but then again he’s just a teenager and he realizes he shouldn’t have distanced himself from Devi for something her mom did and went back to her. From the season 2 table read we also got to know he waited right outside her house until she came back home.. he didn’t go back to eat nothing cause he didn’t want to miss his chance. Its cute how he still went back to her house even though Devi’s mom could be there and the same thing could happen again but he didn’t care and went back. Saying people ship Daxton just for his looks is bullshit. Yes Paxton is very attractive but that’s like saying you all ship Ben and Devi because Ben is white and Paxton is Asian.  Paxton isn’t the “Bad toxic popular boy” like how the fandom makes him out to be.  He’s disciplined, doesn’t drink during his swim season.. he doesn’t try to sneak around his coach and drink.. He hasn’t been rude to anyone. He saw Fab in the hallway and told her “your mom is cool” but she called him racist etc etc. Nor has he been embarrassed of Devi. He apologizes in person when he is wrong. He’s protective of his sister, he even cuts out his friends if they are mean to his sister. He’s respectful. He may not be the best, but he’s trying to make things better. I honestly hate the way Devi see’s him, especially on that pro and con board. It’s all about his looks and sex. I hope around season 2 she starts seeing him more than just a pretty face but I feel like Paxton would find the board and get hurt again thinking Devi just sees him as another hot-popular kid.  Anyways I stand by saying Paxton is a better relationship choice and he’s precious stop attacking him.  (Also hi to anyone who made it till here lol)

1. darklina was always the most popular fandom ship of the grisha trilogy, years before they casted ben barnes so this take always makes me roll my eyes

See I would someone believe them maybe changing the endgame if the author who's heavily involved with the show didn't hate them so openly I saw someone say the tagline for the first book was something akin to "darkness pure light a love that lasts forever" and she wasn't expecting people to ship them what??? I'm so confused was she planning for it to be the endgame and then she swerved for some unknown reason .Ben barnes is a huge draw and I'm sure they respect him but he wouldn't be the first veteran in a show to play the villain and nope out of there after a couple of seasons also the way they ADMITTED they changed things about mal that people found annoying they made him perfect and hit us with that meadow scene every 5 seconds bc they're doing a malina slowburn and making sure everyoneeeee knows that they're the OTP as much as I would love for us to get a redemption arc or even have alina turn dark like people said he's a mess but he's trying to fix a problem and protecting the grisha what the hell are the heroes actually doing even at the end of the books they do nothing.... There is no way it's gonna happen and I don't want to set myself up for years of disappointment

I wanna disclaim first and foremost that I have *not* read the books.

At least you know from the get-go that Malina is supposed to be endgame. And I also heard that the author is pretty much as allergic to darklina as anyone else, the same author that, yes indeed, is a producer on the show. I keep my hopes up though, but not by much, that there could be changes made to the ending if the fan reaction is loud enough. It isn’t unheard of, as I’m sure you’re aware. Like we aren’t still reeling from that atrocious Game of Thrones ending as a whole, despite that the author of the series had also been a producer and a writer of the show. And that was coming from an author who was so staunchly adamant that the right kind of people adapted his work. Netflix, on the other hand, has retconned endgame pairings from their source material to the adaptations before. Riverdale comes to mind, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina as well. Over at CW, The Vampire Diaries had a drastic overhaul when it came to pairings. Netflix has done it before that they would follow through with the popular ship to cater to the fans.

And I mean, darklina seems to have been the more popular ship *before* the show came out, I’m scarce to think of the standing of the ship now after said release. The fact that the show pushed hard with Ben Barnes’s face is *not* helping the fact. I wasn’t aware there had been a rival ship to General Kirigan x Alina at all until I’ve seen the show. Like there was an obvious baiting here. The show runners knew what they were doing when they cast Ben Barnes - let alone the baiting in the original source material as well.

So I’m not holding up a lot of hope, lmao I ain’t walking around with Booboo the Fool stamped on my forehead all the time, but I am enjoying the ship for as long as we have it. And I know the detractors would say differently but Ben Barnes is the face of the show right now. And he’s real excited about it, about his character, and the darklina ship as well. Like he put all his passion into the role. All these tiny tidbits we seem to enjoy the most in the show are being revealed that Ben improvised them to bring nuance to his character and the pairing. Whatever will happen down the line with the darkling and for Ben, I feel we’ll cross that bridge when we get there. The adaptations changed enough, from what I heard. Who’s to say they won’t change more?

As for the author within her own work I cannot speak too much on it, simply bc I have not read them. From the looks of it, it sounded like she used darklina quite as a shipbait, if even the tag line on her (first) book alluded to some kind of eternal romance between Alina and the Darkling. I am absolutely not gonna lie; if I read that tagline on the first book before I even opened the cover, only for the books to do a 180 on me, then yeah I would sincerely feel baited too. And I feel like she restricted the possibilities of her characters just to allude to her own personal life. I see a few people defending the author for such which, a lot of the times In The Real World, I tend to disagree, especially when it seems that she’s purposely prohibiting the organic flow of where the story and the characters are heading, like allowing the Darkling a worthy redemption arc, just to fit her personal issues in her work. It’s not that I’m saying she shouldn’t— it’s her story, she’s allowed to write it per her whim— it just feels less satisfying to the general writing of the tale she’s telling. And that could factor to weak writing.

1. ill wait ill wait (to be the one) by georgiestauffenberg made me ship it cause holy fuck dude. I dont know if i ship them romantically when i saw them onscreen cause first of all, age difference is kinda weird lmao. Second, they dont rlly interact much outside literally the first couple of eps. But he was so soft for her, and i felt like they had so much unexplored history.

so i looked at fanfics cause i was wondering if ppl still ship it, then i liked the description of this one so i gave it a go.

Basically the premise is that vanya dates a much older man who seems to know a lot about her. And it was amazingly in character and just provided their characters some depth that u wouldnt find outside of a romantic relationship between them. (The implication of five pining while she doesnt know who he is, their missed chances when he time travelled, fives missed chances of living and having a 'normal' life bec of his own hubris, vanyas insecurity and being able to open up bec shes with someone whos known her since childhood). Its so sweet and thats how i was like, oh yep i can do so much more with these two, and what has kept me interested in drawing them etc.

2. My favourite things are the shippers cause i made some friends in the fandom who are super cool and supportive! I dont get super involved in fandoms and usually just watch from afar so finding people to talk to and muck around with in this tiny fandom is super cool 😭

Though thats not to say I havent come across some bad apples in this fandom and things that I dont like. I think thats the importance of carving out a place for yourself and ur friends in fandom tho.

Another thing I like about the ship itself, i just like the grumpy person whos soft for one person trope. Its so cute. I like all the little clues in canon on how their relationship as kids is quite warm, which is interesting cause five is basically the star student and he can be quite cold vs vanya who is the black sheep of the family.

I also like how five likes her powers even when she caused the apocalypse he spent the majority of his life in lol. Like its a popular hc that five is just a wife guy and i love that.

I see vanya as the type who has a lot of love to give, and she sometimes has unrealistic expectations of what her partner can give. Betrayal and lies really angers her, but also when her partner cannot meet her expectations of love she gets very upset bec its also an indication of how shes not good enough, or not loveable enough to be able to have this in the relationship (her insecurity means every failing always comes back to her, even if its out of her control).

I feel like five would be a level-headed person enough in the relationship to not be afraid to say 'vanya ur being stupid' (ie. the s2 confrontation lmao). Also, five's personality means she will never have to doubt his actions bec she knows hes the type who will not give u the moment of the day if hes not interested.

Not to mention they also have the whole apocalypse vs. saviour, hero/villain thing. Theres just a lot to explore!

3. I probably have several. But mostly I dont mind five being a dick to vanya bec first, even if the appeal is hes soft to her hes already kind of a dick in canon lmao. Also, vanya isnt a child. Shes grown and she can handle petty af things like five telling her shes not good at cooking lol. I also dont mind it cause I feel like people are getting too afraid to write... conflict for fear or portraying an abusive relationship or smth. Like, chill. Conflict is fine, resolving it is how u get a story. However in saying that, nobody should be obligated to write any way unless you want to! Fanfic is for comfort so if what your doing is making u happy then its good enough!

horrance which i also ship but i love the platonic and romantic relationship equally:

1. I came in tua in general not shipping anything so Im honestly not sure. I do remember someone doing a meta before s2 came out that was basically how ben acted weird when klaus summoned dave in s1 that made me go 👀 Otherwise, tua s2 rlly made me like them cause tua FED horrance shippers. Like..... the fact that klaus didnt want ben to leave him, and ben knows thats why he stayed 😢 or the fact that klaus was all over him for some reason???? Somebody also mentioned gay ben once and I resonate with that deeply. Like i get that jill exists but i resonate with gay ben deeply.

2. I love their bickering, theyre so cute together. I just like ben being angry bec hes self aware that hes got both shit and amazing taste. Shit bec he cant believes he likes Klaus (and also amazing also bec Klaus). I think the idea of them being kind of underdogs, theyre not rlly leader types and dont want to be, helps them bond together even in platonic horrance. They're both down to earth, and even tho they can annoy each other, they also know if they want a space to feel comfortable its with each other. Theyre not pressured by rivalry over leadership, or any sort of competition.

I love the idea that even tho ben is like klaus's ''conscience'', hes also down for chaos and bitchy. I feel like klaus rlly enabled that side of him, its not exactly a good thing but its p funny lol

3. I know some people think their dynamic is unhealthy but i dont care lol

alluther. So id say i dont ship this, mostly due to the fact that im not invested? Just like all tua ships so far I rlly came out not wanting anything but platonic relationships cause I feel tua doesnt do romance very well. With alluther, theyre so cute but im not super invested in either of their chars so they havent stuck for me. I appreciate seeing them and talking about them tho, and I'm def open to exploring them further.

1. I think tua canon romances are just so lackluster 😔 Idk who writes the romances but I was just like 'nice' but afterwards I dont really think about them. I love their dance scene and the message behind it! Otherwise, theyre sweet like most of the tua romances but im not super invested, same with all the non canon ships.

2. I really feel like tua needs to decide on what their relationship is. Like, just say its incest or not and stick with it 👀 Or if you wanna support it or not, just make up ur mind. I think I would've liked it better if I found the characters more interesting. Allison especially I feel like suffers from the fact that tua just doesn't want to make her ''mean''. They want to make her supportive and are less interested in making her flawed (ie. she should've had a conflict with Vanya in s2, but the writers didnt want to write the girls fighting which is stupid imo and not what that conflict is about).

In regards to Alluther, the scene where Allison gets annoyed at Luther for sleeping with someone else felt out of line. Like, how are you marrying other people and moving on but Luther isn't allowed to? But honestly, I don't mind if they actually just acknowledge it and make it a deliberate part of Allison's trait that Allison can expect a certain loyalty automatically from other people (which can tie in to her childhood being a star, and the rumour).

Luther is a big simp for Allison, which is sweet, but at the same time it would be nice to have him explore himself for a bit, and who he is outside of the academy. Then maybe they can rekindle their relationship again as new people and see where they go from there.

3. I don't hate them, but they're ok. I'm not super invested in them, just like all the tua canon romance. But I wouldn't mind making content for them if I were a bit more invested in their characters. I love their dance scene in s1 and I feel like its super a underrated portrayal of what their relationship is meant to be. I know no one talks about it but it's just such a great scene, and I'm pretty sure the choreographer was into interpretive dance? The scene had a lot of meaning that I don't see people dig around with.

Essentially I'm pretty sure the fairy lights are obviously a throwback to their childhood together, spending time outside of Reggie. So the dance scene kind of symbolized that pocket of space they made for each other in their life (even if theyre far away, or with other people, they will always have that space for each other).

The way they danced was more like playfighting than dancing, which means their relationship isn't sensual. It's more ''pure'', and romantic. Its basically two kids rekindling their love as adults. I also think this is a response to the incest, cause in s1 tua klaus literally said that 'thank god Regg is not their real father' right before Allison and Luther meet lmao. So its kinda like saying Allison x Luther isnt supposed to be 'ohh step sibling hot' but two people who experienced the same trauma as kids and finding comfort with each other (and rekindling that love after many years).
