A reef that has been degradedâwhether by coral bleaching or diseaseâcanât support the same diversity of species and has a much quieter, less rich soundscape.
But new research from Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution shows that sound could potentially be a vital tool in the effort to restore coral reefs.
A healthy coral reef is noisy, full of the croaks, purrs, and grunts of various fishes and the crackling of snapping shrimp. Scientists believe that coral larvae use this symphony of sounds to help them determine where they should live and grow.
So, replaying healthy reef sounds can encourage new life in damaged or degraded reefs.
In a paper published last week in Royal Society Open Science, the Woods Hole researchers showed that broadcasting the soundscape of a healthy reef caused coral larvae to settle at significantly higher ratesâup to seven times more often.
âWhat weâre showing is that you can actively induce coral settlement by playing sounds,â said Nadège Aoki, a doctoral candidate at WHOI and first author on the paper.
âYou can go to a reef that is degraded in some way and add in the sounds of biological activity from a healthy reef, potentially helping this really important step in the coral life cycle.â
Corals are immobile as adults, so the larval stage is their only opportunity to select a good habitat. They swim or drift with the currents, seeking the right conditions to settle out of the water column and affix themselves to the seabed. Previous research has shown that chemical and light cues can influence that decision, but Aoki and her colleagues demonstrate that the soundscape also plays a major role in where corals settle.
The researchers ran the same experiment twice in the U.S. Virgin Islands in 2022. They collected larvae from Porites astreoides, a hardy species commonly known as mustard hill coral thanks to its lumpy shape and yellow color and distributed them in cups at three reefs along the southern coast of St. John. One of those reefs, Tektite, is relatively healthy. The other two, Cocoloba and Salt Pond, are more degraded with sparse coral cover and fewer fish.
At Salt Pond, Aoki and her colleagues installed an underwater speaker system and placed cups of larvae at distances of one, five, 10, and 30 meters from the speakers. They broadcast healthy reef sounds â recorded at Tektite in 2013 â for three nights. They set up similar installations at the other two reefs but didnât play any sounds.
When they collected the cups, the researchers found that significantly more coral larvae had settled in the cups at Salt Pond than the other two reefs. On average, coral larvae settled at rates 1.7 times (and up to 7x) higher with the enriched sound environment.
The highest settlement rates were at five meters from the speakers, but even the cups placed 30 meters away had more larvae settling to the bottom than at Cocoloba and Tektite.
âThe fact that settlement is consistently decreasing with distance from the speaker, when all else is kept constant, is particularly important because it shows that these changes are due to the added sound and not other factors,â said Aran Mooney, a marine biologist at WHOI and lead author on the paper.
âThis gives us a new tool in the toolbox for potentially rebuilding a reef.â
Adding the audio is a process that would be relatively simple to implement, too.
âReplicating an acoustic environment is actually quite easy compared to replicating the reef chemical and microbial cues which also play a role in where corals choose to settle,â said Amy Apprill, a microbial ecologist at WHOI and a co-author on the paper.
âIt appears to be one of the most scalable tools that can be applied to rebuild reefs, so weâre really excited about that potential.â"

Cristin Milioti as Sofia Falcone is already a better written and acted performance than every. single. female. character. from Gotham (except Fish Mooney, that goes without saying - the others though? I've seen better writing on a CW show...)
Talk about making a strong first impression. Her first scene portrayed so much presence and subtle complexity, and - I cannot fucking emphasize this enough - legit intimidation. I 100% buy that all these gangsters are terrified of her.
I'm sorry to Crystal Reed, it's not her fault the writing was shit, but I could not take her seriously for a second as Sofia. Cristin on the other hand? Fantastic. It's clear Sofia's fucked up from her time in Arkham. But instead of doing a Crazy Bitch performance with a lot of completely unnecessary overacting (*glares at Barbara Kean* again, I'm sorry Erin but, fucking hell, her wish.com Harley shit was so annoying...) Cristin is a lot more quiet and subdued. But you can sense just how unhinged she is.
I am so excited to see more of this version of Sofia.

Yandere Oswald Cobblepot (Platonic & Romantic Headcanons)
Warnings: Mentions of Gore, Violence, Blood, Stalking, Alcohol Use, Use of Firearms, Mentions of Torture, Death, Undeath, Desecration of Corpses, Mention of Abduction, Incarceration, Psychological Manipulation.
Platonic:
From his days of spying and backstabbing as a human footstool for Fish Mooney, Oswald has understood that most relationships are transactional and devoid of real intimacy. Hence, he becomes so readily attached when someone goes out of their way to make his time on this earth a little easier.
In this person, whom he now wishes to have as a lifelong friend, Oswald sees a shining exception to human ugliness, for whose sake he is willing to break laws, spend vast sums of money, and take lives to keep with him. The late Gertrud Kapelput taught him that one must give everything to those dearest to one's heart, a lesson Oswald will honour for the rest of his life.
In addition to assassinating people on his friend's behalf, this devotion translates to buying out entire inventories of jewellery and clothes for them. He offers free drinks at his nightclub, guarantees protection if they operate a business, and provides super-secret special access to all his mother's recipes.
Being sentenced to Arkham or Blackgate is no matter when Mayor Cobblepot is eager to finagle the early release of an old friend. He will blackmail, intimidate, and coerce all the appropriate offices until the person he wants is back with him.
Oswald becomes exceedingly irritable and anxious if separated from his friend for too long. He relies on them to lend him an ear whenever he needs to castrate a rival verbally. Although he is not the most cooperative, Oswald is sensitive to any advice from his friend, a sensitivity that doubles if they tell him he is a good man.
As soon as they are more than a few hours late for a meeting and have not contacted him with an airtight explanation, Oswald is howling at his goons to find them and phoning the GCPD to babble about filing a missing persons report. He refuses to sleep or stop pursuing their alleged killer after his worried heart tells him they lie dead in an alley.
Oswald is drowning in grief and hysteria, attacking anyone who delivers bad news about the search when his friend returns to him alive. He collapses into their arms and rejoices that he can delay learning how it would feel to live without them a bit longer, at which point he begs them to clear their schedule in favour of accompanying him through his day.
If anyone dares make a laughingstock of this relationship and, by extension, him, Oswald paces up and down his home while guzzling wine and ranting about how he will roast these people's entrails like chestnuts over an open fire.
Practising emotional honesty for something other than anger takes every courage Oswald can summon. It is safer for him to live out his days half-satisfied and fantasizing than to put his hopes to the test and risk terrifying rejection, so while he is weighing the pros and cons of coming clean, Oswald awaits a sign that the attachment is reciprocal.
In his ideal world, he lives in his father's mansion and drinks tea with his mother and friend while everyone talks about how he proved the critics wrong and became a great man despite everything.
This dream will never come true for various reasons that keep Oswald awake at night, so he persuades his friend to take one of the guest bedrooms and dispatches those who might threaten his monopoly on their attention.
He does much to sweeten the deal, which, when broken down to its most basic elements, is a request for his friend to devote themselves to him, as Gertrud did and as he says he did for them. A gourmet breakfast and dinner from Olga every day are a given, but the only item on which Oswald will not make concessions is permission to leave Gotham.
Suppose his friend chooses a life of crime. Oswald considers himself their proudest and most adamant supporter. If they are arrested, he will burst into the police station with an army of sycophants â if necessary, an angry mob of misguided citizens â and demand that all charges be dropped.
If the GCPD resists, he will send Victor Zsasz to raid the precinct in a hail of bullets or turn the case into a political issue for the cameras and journalists to shame the police into submission.
A constant sense of danger looms over the friendship, like wolves over a sick deer. Oswald sees it every day in the crowds wishing him to suffer, in the way his heartbeat jumps and pushes him to lash out each time someone approaches his friend with a suspicious look.
This hypervigilance may one day prove too stressful, and Oswald decides his best course of action is to fake his friend's death and sequester them in a safe house until he rules Gotham's underworld with absolute power.
If they do die, Oswald embraces their corpse and wails like a lost child until he has to retreat to survive or gets a chance to mangle the one he thinks is to blame. Afterwards, he is subject to fits of rage and melancholy when reminded of his departed friend and enlists Hugo Strange to revive them.
Operating under a fat paycheck and the threat of torture if he fails, Strange is cleared to sacrifice as many people and make as many monstrous modifications as necessary to succeed.
Driven mad by loss compounded, Oswald finds scarcely a price not worth paying if it allows him to have back one of the few bright spots in his life.
Romantic:
In terms of relationship security, Oswald experiences some cognitive dissonance. He wants to believe that his partner will never abandon him, but at the same time, he fears losing them to anyone with a pulse.
Oswald, pathologically insecure, suspects his partner of finding a replacement for him after one ill-timed joke, one misunderstood smile, or one rejection of another's flirtation that he does not feel was direct enough. He flies into a tirade about how they lead him on and play with his emotions to leech off his wealth and influence.
This explosive tantrum sends his every minion scurrying far away, for whichever lackey is standing closest to him at that moment will be stabbed in the neck with a broken bottle or beaten senseless with a fire poker, depending on the setting. Even though the physical aspects of his rage never touch his partner, the threat of what he could do to them is present evermore.
Throughout his life, the only people who have invariably been kind to him without ulterior motives are his parents, especially his mother. Therefore, a genuine compliment from his partner overwhelms him with the feeling of being wanted and makes him grossly overestimate his importance to them.
If someone claims that his partner has been disloyal to him, Oswald disregards any evidence as forged and maims the messenger for, in his eyes, being a filthy liar. The only way he would believe such a thing is if he uncovers the evidence himself, in which Oswald would rather blame a third party for forcing his partner's hand than let go of the comforting delusion that this relationship is meant to be.
As his rise to power destabilizes him mentally and puts a glaring target on his back, Oswald fears leaving his partner alone, even for a minute. His paranoia spirals out of control until he becomes obsessed with the possibility that enemies he knows too well and those he has yet to discover will come to murder or kidnap and torture the last good thing in his miserable existence.
Oswald assigns Victor Zsasz to keep vigil over his partner day and night for the foreseeable future, giving Victor â who in turn gives his henchwomen â strict shoot-on-sight orders for any visitors not on his list. The list is shorter than a pig's tail and consists of Oswald himself, Victor and crew, and as an on-again, off-again member, Edward Nygma.
In his deranged mind, not even Jim Gordan has business speaking to his partner without him there to monitor the interaction.
Suppose Oswald gets the impression that someone is trying to wheedle information out of his partner or bully them into betraying his trust. In that case, this interloper is slain with extreme prejudice at the earliest opportunity.
Suppose a friend or family member decides to come over unannounced and receives a bullet to the brain, que serĂĄ, serĂĄ. Oswald has convinced himself that all the others in his partner's life are traitors waiting to happen, or, if not traitors, vulnerabilities that his enemies will use to lure his partner away from the safety of his watchful eye.
Acts of disrespect towards those he cares about make Oswald apoplectic, so if he hears anything about anyone accosting or assaulting his partner, someone is getting an umbrella crammed down their throat.
Whether he beats the culprit to death with a baseball bat, lets Victor have fun with them, or mounts their severed head on one of his end tables and calls it a decoration depends on the severity of his partner's distress. If tears are shed, and blood is bled, whoever caused them this pain is hunted like an animal and reduced to meat paste.
Through mass execution and permanent disfigurement, Oswald makes it clear that his partner is off-limits to Gotham's underworld, even to those members who have been licensed to do wrong by the Pax Penguina.
Anyone still holding them at gunpoint loses an arm and then a life, and Oswald insists that he take that life himself because everything that threatens his partner threatens him, too.
If in Arkham together, Oswald deems himself far more honest than the rest of these ruffians and thus makes a promise. Any violence against his partner will be inflicted tenfold on the perpetrators, whom he adds to his big book of names to disappear once he regains his status as King of Gotham.
Locked alone in the asylum, Oswald worries that his partner will leave and forget about him. Once free, he tracks their current address by any means necessary and seeks confirmation that they have not forsaken him. This absence has so reinforced his inability to separate that the appearance of a new person or a request to distance himself from them is perceived as a betrayal.
Although Oswald will always forgive his partner, he will not quit plotting revenge against those who gave them these terrible ideas. The day of reckoning for these pond scum will come when and how he pleases. In the meantime, he would like to share a ribeye steak with his partner while everyone else in Gotham starves.

DEATH DOESNâT DISCRIMINATE, BETWEEN THE SINNERS AND THE SAINTS, IT TAKES AND IT TAKES AND IT TAKES.
(Wait For It, Hamilton) â warning: descriptive murder & violence, and multiple mention of death.
13 is the number of death. The unlucky number.
Coincidentally, Morganâs luck began to diminish as death began to loom over her at the age 13. But she was never the target. Death seemed to enjoy seeing a child witness direct or indirect deaths of her loved ones, snapping his fingers and taking their breaths away before her.
First was her nanay and tĂĄta. It was brutal, they died on a friday when she was 13. She was only 13, a 13-year-old shouldnât be seeing so much blood. A 13-year old should be worrying about her first day of high school, not sitting between her parents, her new shoes soaked in their blood.
The same year, her friend died. She was in the orphanage, watching the news. He saw his faceâ his hair that was once red like hers was dyed black, but it was Jasonâs face regardlessâ on the screen; Billionaire Philanthropistâs adopted son, dead. She was only 13 and she already felt so alone.
Everyoneâs gone but Death himself.
13 is the number of death. It must be her number.
Because she was 13 when she snapped back to reality up blood in her hands.Â
Morgan began to hyperventilate, the blue knife clattering on the groundâ where did that come from?â as she stared at the body before her.
âMorgan!â she heard a voice called out but it was drowned by the multiple whispers in her headâ she doesnât understand it, theyâre talking a lot, all over each otherâ and the fact that her hands were red and wet.
She wished she didn't remember. But she remembered it clearly. Â
It was one of Fish Mooneyâs goons, cornering her and Harley by some alley, demanding for the heirloom Fish was after.
Morgan survived purely by instinct and Harleyâs huge hammer. She wasnât sure what was going on, Chatâ the whispers, the eyes, you, the readerâwanted her to fight and help Harley. But then one of the goons had slipped Harley and Morgan was cornered. The guy loomed over herâ like how Death does, like how the clown didâ
FIGHTâFIGHTâFIGHTâFIGHT BACKâ The voices were loud, for the first time, they all agreed on something.
This man works for Fish Mooney, he wasnât probably above harming a child. Morgan acted on impulse when he got too close, fear in her veins and Morgan rarely feels afraid nowadays. When he grabbed her arm, the guyâs face changed until his lips were red, his skin was bleached, his hair was greenâŚ
Morgan began to hyperventilate. It was him. Here. Again. Before the clown could do anything, Morgan wordlessly raised her arm, gripping her knifeâ wait, where did that come from?â and slit his throat.
When she saw red, Chat stopped. Morgan was surprised by the silence so Morgan didnât stop. As the clown stumbled back, choking on his own blood, she lunged and plunged her blade into his skin. Not once. Not twice. All her anger was released with every push of the knife and itâŚ
It felt freeing. To end him. Because that meant sheâd be freeing the people he had killed too.
Chat quieted down. Is this how to make it stop talking? (Is this why she does this again? Is this why she takes and she takes and she takes?)
Until with a blink of her eyes, the clown wasnât the one bleeding on the alley floor.Â
And Morgan staggered backwards. She was only 13 when she caused a man to bleed out. Her eyes widened in fear of what she just did, she let out a strangled gasp, the knife clattering on the ground.
As she stood there, Morgan realised there was no guilt pooling in her stomach. No, it was more of a...Â
âMorgan!â she heard Harley call out to her again.
⌠Disappointment.
Chat returned to her head. Ecstatic, amazed, terrified, and worried. And Morgan was disappointed because it was just a guy, it wasnât him. The clown was still alive out there, Morgan didnât kill him. She no longer felt free.
âMorgaâ oh my god,â Harley said. Morgan turned to her with an unreadable expression. âOh god, did youââ she shook her head and approached the redhead, concerned etched on her face. âMorgan, are you okay? What happeââ
She was only 13. A 13-year-old like her should be worrying about her upcoming recital, not thinking about how annoyed she was that it wasnât the Joker that was on the floor, that it wasnât the Jokerâs blood in her hands.
Death no longer loomed over, no longer making her witness his powers. No, Death took her hands, guided her at age 13, and had her do his work for him.

jaceverse timeline (with possible ages!) because dc timeline is so fucked up so let me just alter some canon facts real quick :3
year 0 â Harleen Quinzel (26) officially meets the joker, and becomes the Harley Quinn the same year
year 1 â Harley Quinn (30) dumps the Joker and moves in with her BFFâsoon girlfriendâPoison Ivy. The Joker goes on a murder spree as a tantrum. Kills people from Crime Alley, including the Drews, Morgan Drew (13) becomes an orphan after witnessing the death of her parents.
Morgan meets Tim Drake (13) and Corinthia in Gotham Academy. Jason Todd (15) dies. Harley Quinn gives birth to Lucy Quinzel.
year 2 â Morgan Drewâs (14) teenage ârebellionâ began. She sneaks out of the orphanage to steal from easy folks. Steals to reminisce about the time when she was freeâ she was already a thief before her parents diedâ with alive parents and to help with school expenses even though she attends Gotham Academy on scholarship. Detective Bullock tries to stop and catch her.
She began idolising Harley Quinn for being able to stand up against the Joker, realises that if thereâs one person in the world who would help her take him down, it would be her. 14-year-oldâgoing on 15 in a few monthsâMorganâs crimes took another step by terrorising civilians and attends a Wayne Charity Event where she steals important jewelry from Selina Kyle (36). She was beginning to make a public name for herself, Gothamites called her Quinni (Harley Quinn Mini) with her DIY HQ jacket.
year 3 â Now known as Carnival to others and after saving her from the wrath of Penguin & Fish Mooney, Harley Quinn (33) begrudgingly takes her in as her sidekick officially. Morgan Drew (15) claims it as the best bday gift and began donning on a new Carnival costume thatâs not a poor rip-off of Harleyâs jester outfit.
Tim Drake (15) forms Young Justice. Morgan meets Superboy (16) as his civilian identity, Conner Kent because of Tim Drake and they become online friends.
Began terrorising Joker as much as she could with her limited resources.
year 4 â Morgan Drew (16) trains hard. Carnival sometimes annoys, sometimes aids Robin (Tim Drake) in his missions where she meets Superboy as Carnival. Becomes an unofficial Young Justice member and later then recruited by Amanda Waller in a team called Young Riot.
Harley Quinn (33) takes on the alter-ego, Heather Lee to officially foster Morgan. Eventually she, along Poison Ivy (35)â using an alter-ego for the documents as wellâadopts her.
year 5 â Harley Quinn (34) officially becomes a member of the batfamily along with Selina Kyle (38). Morgan Drew (17) reunited with childhood friend, Jason Todd (19). She exploded all of the Joker bases she could find with true help of Red Hood.
The Joker plays a revenge, hurting Morganâs friends, Cori and Ani. Angry, she almost killed the Joker before Batman swoops in to put him back to Arkham.
Harley sent her away to her mom. Morgan meets Lucy Quinzel (4) officially when she visits Mrs. Quinzel.
year 6 â Batman (40) disappears and Dick Grayson (24) temporarily becomes Batman with Damian Wayne (10) as his Robin. Young Justice disbands. Tim Drake (18) becomes Red Robin. Morgan Drew (18) has a fell out with her mothers, abandoning the name Carnival and becoming a much violent version herself as Delphi.
other notes:
She eventually returns as Carnival
Will take journ for college and will become a journalist as her adult career. (Lois Lane fan)
Will have a daughter named Gwen! Having Gwen starts to make Morgan want to quit as Carnival

Gotham :
Ok folks, I need an answer.
I've only started watching the show and I have a question concerning Oswald Cobblepot, our dear King, our dear Penguin!
How did he get his "bad leg"? đ¤
I'm not familiar with the situation so I searched on Google... but it failed to answer my wonder... Technically it did give me answers, multiple different ones.
One says that it comes from a malformation meaning that he was born like this and he grew to have that dysfunctioning leg which thus led to mockery from his peers calling him "penguin".
Another one was saying that it comes from an injury that he suffered when he was a kid leaving him with a hurt leg that did not heal properly or just that he was injured and it left him relatively handicapped. Then the same thing : he's a kid, he's got a disability and he's been made fun of, "penguin".
And the last explanation is that he is technically called penguin just because of his appearance (something to do with his nose, his hair, the way he dresses or whatever) and that his leg got injured when Oswald betrayed Fish Moony and she beat him down. His leg got injured and it's not gonna heal properly, leaving with him with a limp. Or sometimes it says that he already had a bad leg but it got worse because of what Fish Mooney did to him. That's why we see him limping when he's on the docks with Jim in the first episode.
So, basically I'm lost.
In my mind, it would make more sense that he already had the bad leg thing leading people to insult him by calling him "penguin" meaning that he's got that resentment towards people mocking him basically all of his life because of his disability.
I don't know.
I suppose the explanation depends on the media. I'd like to know the specific explanation for the TV show Gotham.
Could someone kindly answer my question and explain to me in the comments? I would appreciate that very much. Thank you in advance. đ

The Gotham version of penguin is hands down the greatest to ever exist, Jason would have no patience for him and oswald would be so affronted
Their Bruce is also so good! Kid did an amazing job at that đđ with that kind of childhood and he's already running his own little detective cases from a young age and being trained in combat like you can clearly see his obvious trajectory towards batman idk how to explain it but from watching him through the seasons you could really believe in him becoming batman and also eventually batdad
ALSO FISH FREAKING MOONEY â¤â¤â¤
Anyway I shall shush now while I can cuz Gotham really has me in a chokehold and I could keep rambling and that's without even mentioning thier Joker
Someone needs to make a batman movie and let the gotham Bruce be the bat cuz he really deserves it
I kinda think dick grayson would actually vibe with these gotham villains though and their general stupidity levels would be enough to make damian cry
Sorry for my rambling lol now I'll shush đ¤Ł
ugh stop, i love how cameron monaghan played the joker!!
I think i only seen him in clips when he was in prison, and for some reason, i just wanna give him a handshake, idk how to describe him.
OH YEAH, and how his lighter didn't work when he was tryna set the bus on fire!! I loved it, and him casually asking if anyone got a light as if everything is peaches n cream.
I haven't seen any other potrayal of villains, but I'll take your word for it. Based on how you described them, I can see Jason asking someone to kill him again đ and probably damian would ask the same
This is the first I'm hearing of Fish Mooney, but she looks like someone I'd willingly give all my belongings to.
And also, I hate how inconsistent DC with writing Bruce as a dad, but I fully believe that Gotham Bruce would become a great portrayal of batdad and NOT inject Jason with a serum that would heighten his fear when his adrenaline spikes.
AND don't even apologise for rambling, i love hearing everyone's recommendations and opinions!! I'd most likely just ramble on, too
