just. what a profoundly intense thing to confess to someone.

like, just these six months of newfound happiness with you exerts a force on his heart equal and in direct opposition to two centuries of endless torment, the gnawing hunger and exploitation. this flashbulb-bright fraction of his long life holds the same gravity to him as years upon years of darkness and suffering.

in all likelihood, he hasn’t even known his lover for as long as his worst memory lasted, that year sealed away to go mad from starvation and sensory deprivation, yet he still tells them this brief time has been so fundamentally and powerfully important that the weight of even that unimaginable hell is vanishingly small compared to this present he has now and the future ahead of them both.

I've seen a lot of people writing Danny as a space ancient and Dan and Dani as ghosts with moon and sun cores, being sort of parts, versions of Danny and therefore weaker. Now, consider: Dan and Dani are both powerful ghosts with really cool cores and stuff but Danny is just some guy™

Dan, who came from an alternate timeline and is kind of from the future but also not, is Clockwork's apprentice and will eventually become an ancient of time. He probably only agreed to have some lessons with Clockwork to understand better what happened to him, but he enjoys his apprenticeship now.

Dani, with her love of travelling, loves seeing all the different places the world offers to her, and that includes space and different planets and maybe even parallel universes, and she accidentally ends up being an apprentice of the space ancient. For now she's probably a baby ancient of freedom or something like that, but she might become an ancient of space in the future.

We can also have something like Dan having a core of destruction or Dani being the Speed Force if you want it to be dcxdp, or any headcanon of yours about their cool powers.

And then there's Danny. And yeah, everyone knows that he's super powerful, but also he's just some guy.

It can go different routes. Does everyone know that Danny is just Danny? Or do they think that with siblings (well, technically a clone and an alternate version, but whatever) so powerful, he must be even stronger? Is Danny actually something terrifyingly eldritch and ancient and strong, almost a god, but he just doesn't know himself? Or is he just really some guy?

Now, because it's obvious that I have a dcxdp brainrot, have a regular "JL summons/meets a powerful ghost" but its Dan and Dani, and they keep mentioning their original/brother who won a fight against them at some point. The JL is very concerned about Dan and Dani's godlike powers, and they can't imagine what Danny is like. And then they meet him (in his human form), and it's just a young adult in casual clothes, very friendly and helpful, with no evident powers. Imagine the confusion. Imagine Dan and Dani, radiating power, in their eldritch ghost forms, admitting that fighting Danny for real is the dumbest thing to do and not even they would succeed... And then there's Danny is jeans and silly t-shirt, waving shyly.

Don't quite know how to put this but there are certain story beats that, in order for me to actually like/admire the story, specifically have to be accomplished without being a big deal.

Like, does your story present ordinary, mundane, even ridiculous people as possessing worth and dignity? Cool. Does it pat itself on the back about doing that? Unfortunately, that has circled back around to patronizing.

Does your character make the lives of bit characters and nameless bystanders a priority, even when it distracts them from Important Plot Things? Nice! Does your character make a big production of/express a lot of angst about doing that? This only barely edges out "leaving them to die" in terms of my respect for said character.

Ordinary people are just as valuable and important as Our Heroes. But the narrative should have enough conviction about that to take it for granted, and let the audience catch up if need be. A Hero should definitely take it for granted, unless they're still in the process of becoming heroic.

Otherwise, I'm left with the sneaking suspicion that the writers don't really see this themselves.

#this is the distinction between what i tend to mentally categorize as 'hobbit-positive' stories #and ones that feel like they know they're SUPPOSED to be hobbit-positive but are struggling #lobelia sackville-baggins is a heroic figure by the end of lotr #but tolkien doesn't make a big song and dance about it or validate her by putting her next to the Actually Cool Characters(TM)#there's just the quiet revelation in amongst the other events that. huh. put under this kind of pressure lobelia was pretty amazing #and the other thing making me think of this was a moment in terror of the zygons where the doctor's escaping the ship #and frees the three humans they'd been impersonating on the way #it's barely even a story beat. they get to participate in destroying the ship and figuring out the enemy plans afterward #but actually rescuing them? it's so casual. and on the one hand that makes it not a Narrative Priority but also like. it's taken for grante #yeah those are people. the doctor doesn't need to think or talk about rescuing them he's just. gonna DO it #(is all of this lowkey an expression of my gripes about the tenth doctor era? maybe a /little./ sorry)#(i could also contrast the tenth doctor and daniel jackson's respective radiation poisoning deaths but these tags are long enough already)

Anyway, I'll elaborate on this in the tags bc omg I'm going to yap your metaphorical ear off.

#SO during the whole “affogato almost takes over the citadel situation” dark cacao cookie [whom i will refer to as DC for my health]#dc basically took all the cookies that were hunting/fishing/patrolling the surrounding lands for food and stuff to make them work #on fortifying the wall #therefore two things happened 1] the cookies who still were hunting for food literally couldn't keep up with the apatites of cookies who #were working super fucking hard on the wall and 2] all the farming imports from the villages near by stopped almost entirely because #it was too dangerous to import their goods or get anything from the citadel [like tools] so they had to keep what they could for themselves #so effectively a famine was starting #and so cookies started eating things they probably shouldn't like deer crackers and wolf treats #looking at you Caramel and crunchy chip #caramel just never fully kicked the habit because it was what she had alot of and she would trade her rations for them with the villages #crunchy chip just allways did that tho. he's just like that #Dc on the other hand grew up in those lands before there was real communication between villages or a citadel to depend on for rations #so famine was common and rough. eatting bark and leaves were common place in his home so while he does eat jellys he never kicked the #craving for tree bark #on the plus side hes got a crazy strong stomach and can eat just about anything #whereas chocolate wafer is from a small village near the hollyberry kingdom so they have allways had an abundance of fruits and juice to #snack on. they managed to convince dc to add dried berrys to their imported goods list and now they are considerd a sweet treat #idk how to put this in kinda organically so ill just say the dc kingdom is a place that depends on imported goods heavily #things like precious metals and food usually comes from the hollyberry kingdom [and gc before her isolation]#in return dc kingdom provides military support and has the best medicine in all of earthbread.
