i imagine that sam and rudy are (so unsubtly that silvia can literally HEAR THEM but is choosing peace and ignoring them) telling laurie about silvia’s habit of getting in fights, but that she doesn’t tend to beat up losers like them

There are a lot of things that Hook will take to the grave before he tells his dad: how he actually didn't go to prom his senior year but had sex with his date in a hotel room booked under her mom's credit card, how he was absolutely still high that time he met them at church after an all-nighter and they got stuck manning the offering plates, how he cheated off Matt Jensen's test his freshman year of college in Word History 104 because he'd completely forgotten the exam existed until ten minutes prior.

And this, now—laying next to Jack in a queen-sized hotel bed, covered in sweat with his heart slow to return to normal rhythms, with the FTW belt Jack took off his damn shoulder crumpled on the carpet near Jack's half-open luggage. His dad would never understand this, would never even try to comprehend what's going on between them, and Hook can't even blame him, because he's not really sure he knows, either.

Hook stares up at the ceiling as fingers trail along the inside of his arm, feather light. "You good?" Jack asks, quietly.

"Yeah." No, Hook is a fucking mess.

"You want me to leave?"

"Up to you." Please fucking stay.

Jack falls quiet, and then says, "I love you, you know?"

"Do you?" You have a funny way of showing it.

"Yeah." A pause. "Hook, do you—"

"Jack, what are we doing?"

There's a terribly long period of quiet. Neither of them moves, and Hook isn't even sure he still remembers how. His legs have jellied, all post-coital calm siphoned away. He'd thought when everything shook down, all he would feel would be rage; instead, it was all the opposite.

"I don't know," Jack finally answers. It's a far cry from his new, douchey confidence—this is the old Jack, the Jack that Hook knows so well. The Jack that's never been sure about where he stands.

Jack's fingers find Hook’s hand, tangles their digits together, and Hook doesn't pull away. He lets Jack slip his fingers between.

"What do we do now?" Jack asks.

"I don't know," Hook replies, and he's never felt so adrift in his life as he does now, anchored to this man he fucking adores and despises in equal measure, the last eight months strewn around their feet like the debris from a homemade explosive device they built together and then detonated.

Chihayafuru is Masterful!

Well I recently got myself to watch Chihayafuru. It had been on my radar for a long time and someone close to me nagged me about it because I love sports anime but to be honest, it didn’t catch my eye because I wasn’t sure if I could relate to the sport of Karuta. I had heard of the amazing reviews but to be honest, it was hard for me to bring myself to watch it. Also the fact that it was so revered in the anime community also made me hesitant to watch it until I could be full appreciative of it by being in the correct mindset. In hindsight, this was not as big a deal as I made it out to be. For example, I enjoyed several baseball anime before I even properly understood the rule of baseball. In fact, I came to appreciate baseball because I enjoyed baseball anime and the suspense and variety of plays in the depiction of the game. But still, baseball was still closer to other sports I played and watched for years so I am sure some of my caution was warranted. Nonetheless, it is funny how perfect of a time I chanced upon to pick up Chihayafuru. I was doing my gazillionth rewatch of the Adachi classic “Cross game” and was out of ideas as to what to watch next. I was in the mood of sports anime but didn’t want to watch some shonen-ish super intense sports anime. Also character work ftw. And while browsing and looking for something to watch, I chanced upon it and I was like sure, I can watch a couple of episodes and delve into it while eating my bibimbap before I continue with my all nighter to finish up some pending work. And so began a series of unfortunate events, in the sense that I wouldn’t be able to begin my planned work on my pending project until three days later. The timing was impeccable, almost like providence, in that the manga had just finished a week ago, something I had no awareness off. And so I binged through 2.5 seasons of 62 episodes in less than 13 hours (if you don’t know - I watch anime at 1.8x) which is one of my fastest binge runs in the recent time. And finishing up the three seasons, I immediately jumped into the manga, continued my speed-run until I was at the last page of chapter 247. What a ride.  I would probably do a couple of posts on the thematic nuances, character-work and just the literary brilliance of the series, since it is impossible to cover the vast depth that this series has in one post. However, one aspect of the series that I would cover here, to some degree, is the Hyakunin Isshu - the 100 poems, historically compiled and preserved through Nippon history. Think of it like Heike monogatari which was one of the oldest monogataris that still continues to inspire media tremendously; a new anime adaptation came out in fall 2021, which was also very grandiose with beautiful animation. Nonetheless, it is just amazing how 4 line poems written a millenium ago can hit deeply into your emotional psyche. 

kaze wo itami, iwa utsu nami no, onore nomi, kudakete mono wo, omou koro kana" - Loosely translates to "As the wind is strong, waves hit the rocks, yet only I am shattered when I think of you."  While Karuta is the central plot device to move the story, the Hyakunin Isshu - the 100 poems are subtly the main drivers of the story. This becomes much more apparent when each of the poems wonderfully encompasses the story of each of the characters and their struggles. Minamoto No Shigeyuki's poem above is a wonderful demonstration to juxtapose the development of one of the best-written characters, Mashima Taichi. The similarity to Rei Kiriyama is frighteningly heavy. Both Mashima and Rei hate their respective fields but feel that they have to play on as it is the only thing they do have. Nonetheless the difference here is that while Rei Kiriyama is relatively a genius like Arata in the story, Taichi isn't unless he is. He is not born with the game sense to play the game and just hangs on with his meticulous hard work. He is a jack of all trades but doesn't have something he is really good at. The imposter syndrome is real and very relatable. And so he expresses all his feelings through Karuta, something he doesn't enjoy (or does he). As Chihaya herself realizes, he is like the waves that hit the rocks in vain, "Tare o ka mo, Shiru hito ni sen, Takasago no, Matsu mo mukashi no, Tomo nara naku ni" - loosely translating to "GONE are my old familiar friends, The men I used to know; Yet still on Takasago beach,The same old pine trees-grow, That I knew long ago." The story is a development of childhood friends who grew together, grew apart, grew separate, yet were still connected by the thread of Karuta. They get seaparated by distance, separated in Karuta, separated by their love for themselves, separated by their love for Karuta, but as long as they keep playing Karuta, they find their way to each other. The old familiar self they knew are gone, yet the same old pine trees grow that they have known all this time, ever since. "Tachiwakare inaba, Inaba no yama no mine ni ouru matsu; matsu to shi kikaba ima kaerikon" translating to "We separate if I leave, just like the name of the pine trees that grow on the peak of Mt Inaba, if I hear that you are waiting for me, I will return to you". Would anyone believe that this poem and the previous one were written in different times by different people? Well the human emotions and depth of conversation with oneself has probably been the same throughout history. You can grow apart from people, by fate or by choice but truthfully if the bond you had with someone was special to you, even if you can't be true to yourself, somewhere deep inside you know that if they call out for you, you will always reach out to them. This beautifully complements both the overall narrative and final act of the story which I would leave the reader to figure out the connection without spoiling. This poem called Tachi, alluding to Mashima Taichi's name cleverly complements the Tare poem above. However, despite the connection between Tare and Tachi, the true literary complement for Tachi is another unrelated poem from the Hyakanin Isshu. "Chihayaburu, kami-yo mo kikazu, Tatsuta-gawa, kara-kurenai ni, mizu kukuru to wa" - translating to "Even in the age of almighty gods unheard of, − the waters of Tatsuta are tie-dyed in crimson.". The poem is named Chihayaburu, or alternatively read as "Chihayafuru". Coincidence much? P.S. The last line of Chihayaburu's original reading is mizu kukuru to wa which refers to a beautiful autumn scenery like the gale in Chihaya. However, Fujiwara No Teika, the original compiler of the Hyakunin Isshu read it as mizu kuguru to wa changing the meaning of the poem ever so slightly "Even in the age of almighty gods unheard of, − the waters of Tatsuta are flowing under layers of crimson." making it a well-disguised love poem, referencing undying passionate love, which is always concealed, providing a beautiful thematic background to the story in question.

Overall, you really sound like an all around kind of gal, and I feel like you and Jimin would be good for each other. Jimin has his hands dipped in a little bit of everything, and I think you two would have good chemistry together. No matter what, there is always sunshine and happiness surrounding you two, as you two never have conflicts and you’re both so bright and happy. Jimin would be the type of guy to always tell you how much he loves you tbh, and Jimin would also want you to know your worth. Not only would Jimin tell you about how you are his everything, but he also will gush over how important your sunshine and energy is to those around you, and how you can really make an impact on people. Jimin is also perfect because he always trying to take care of you. As a fellow dancer, Jimin would make sure that you are ALWAYS getting the proper nutrition you need for your body. Being a dancer is tough work, and it makes sense as to Jimin wanting you to be full, and feel strong and mighty when you dance. And to be honest, you would be equally as stern with Jimin on his nutrition. I feel like Jimin is also stubborn, so your mom like sense of nature can really help you poke at Jimin to eat right and keep himself in tip top shape. You take care of him out of habit and nature. Moving right along, I want to talk dogs and puppos. Dogs are going to play a big role in this whole ship to buckle up. You and Jimin would LOVE to spend a lot of your free time going to dog parks. You two wouldn’t quite get a dog yet, but you two would always want to see the varieties of dog and gush over their cuteness, and even play with them. And better yet, you and Jimin are the go to duo when it comes to puppy sit his fellow members dogs. You two are also quite playful, so I can see a prank war between you two. Sometimes the boys will get involved, but you two prefer to keep it to yourselves. The prank war is sort of that couple thing that you two do together. Some pranks even include hair dye in shampoo bottles and pouring salt in one’s drink. You also always impress Jimin with your language skills. Jimin would always do his best to interact with you in Korean since you are learning, and Jimin would also want you to practice different languages on him, any and every practice can make a difference. Lastly, this boi is always wanting some kind of snuggles. He loves to kiss your cheek, and hand holding would be his favorite. Oh, also, be prepared for a lot of prince like knuckle kisses. 

NCT: Johnny 

Okay so, I’ve said this in other ships but, it’s a perfect opener. You and Johnny would be a little intimidated and scared of each other when you would first meet. Both of your RBF would shine through, so it would be a game of time for you both to express your feelings for each other. Johnny would be the first to say something. You would have to take some time to spill the beans since you have difficulties with expression emotions and that’s okay! Also, Johnny wouldn’t be quick to give up. Before you would spill the beans, Johnny would know you had feelings for him. Although you didn’t say any words, your feelings would be expressed through your actions. The amount of time and effort you would put into Johnny would say more than enough to him. You would pick up on little details on things he would like or take a certain interest in him that Johnny would think would be super sweet. Johnny is smart, so he knew to stick around, and of course when you were ready, you would tell him how you felt about him. After you would spill the beans with him, you two would become love sick puppies. Wrapped around each others pinkies and you’re also constantly gushing over each other. I can also see you constantly gushing over how Johnny is the best boyfriend ever. Mr. Seo here would be so considerate and he would do what you did before you started dating. He is always wanting to surprise you- they’re his thing. Whether it be flowers, lunch, bringing you your favorite snacks or drinks, Johnny has got some surprises for you. Another surprise that Johnny would call “his specialty” would be travel trips! What he would do is, he would take you with him when NCT would travel. Whether it be around the country(you can imagine your location wherever you want) or abroad, as soon as Johnny would get the okay, he is coming at you to pack your bags. Of course you wouldn’t always be able to go with him, but you best believe that this boy would always bring you souvenirs back. The boys would also absolutely adore you, so they would always be more than happy to have you tag along. Taking pictures is #1 on your priority list when you’re traveling, and after you would get home from the trip, you and Johnny would make a little scrapbook of all the pictures. You would also keep track of the best places/entertainment spots you’d visit so you could go there again if you traveled there again. Lastly, PDA wise, Johnny would always have you wrapped around him. You’d be like his teddy bear, and you would fit around him perfectly, and he also loves to rest his chin on the top of your head. 

WayV: Kun 

This is my first WayV ship+write for WayV ever, I am so excited! So, much like Jimin and Johnny, I want you to think about puppy love through this ship like I said, that’s the theme of this ship. You and Kun are two smiley babes ftw. Starting out, Kun would be a little intimidated by you at first. When he took that first look at you, you were this beautiful, powerful woman and he would be shy- but this boy has two hands. Kun is more than qualified to told a powerful woman like you in his hands. Music would be the center of your relationship. There would be so much bonding between you two when it came to music. I can not even imagine how many all nighters you and Kun would have spent in a music studio. Whether you would be listening to music, studying different types of music, or even making music, music is everything. Those three am nights are always the most memorable as well since you can remember the nights when you two were basically delirious from exhaustion and you would be the cutest little pups giggling over something silly, wrapped up in a blanket together. There would be a couch in the studio where you two would snuggle and you two would keep a stack of pillows and blankets beside the couch in preparation for a long night. Some great take out and a microwave for reheating is also the cherry on top for the perfect all nightery by the way. There would also be nights where some of the WayV members would tag along with you two, and it’d be like a huge sleepover because the boys would litter the floor with their bodies, some of them even sleeping in the recording box. Also, just in general, the studio would be the place where you two would go to relax at. You two would lay together, eyes closed in the quiet, having much needed healing time when your weeks would get stressful. Moving along, but keeping the music theme, you and Kun would collab a lot. You would LOVE to make choreography for Kun’s music, and tbh, this bub would light up like an absolute Christmas tree. He’d think it would be so sweet. And, if a song was too slow, it’d be a fun project for you two to do and remix the song so you could make choreo to it- you geniuses. Also, I can not forget about the Kun and the WayV members wanting to teach you the choreo to their songs. That would also be a fun time. study tips for a procrastinating mess

as a self-admitted chronic procrastinator, i have decided to post ALL my stupid tricks that help me! hopefully i can internalize them through text *insert heavenly sound here* (chronic procrastinator as in I, esther the idiot, literally stayed up till 4:30 am writing a position paper that i got stuck on and sat in front of for an entire 14 hours. straight. i need help.)

drink with a straw. saw this somewhere, it helps, basically if i have like a cup of water or something i need to constantly pick it up and put it down and it just stops my hands from moving and my mind from thinking aiya. BUT you know I constantly need something to do with myself or i find something to do (aka tumblr and boredpanda) which is why i study snack like a grazing animal omg and also why my hair is always messed up after sitting down in the library for an hour ugh. SO: straws ftw.

similarly, tie hair up. if my hair is down. i will play with it. and that means i WON’T be typing. it must. be. up.

don’t die studying for assessments! briefly review with vocab! this may just be me but really when it comes to tests and quizzes it’s usually not what i studied independently that counts, it’s what i fully learned in the first place. so listen like a really attentive 5 year old in class (cuz that’s basically what you are in relation to a knowledgeable teacher) and then before a test just review vocabulary and dates so you can make sure you’re able to revive that dead information in your brain from 5 days ago. i use vocabulary sheets as knowledge defibrillators. 

throw your phone across the room! this is probably why my screen protector has so many cracks. but yeah i leave it across the room or in another room where i can’t see the screen.. if i don’t see it it’s usually out of sight out of mind. oh and if i need to use my phone i don’t check any other notifications because if i read a text i always feel obligated to reply so just leave that gross red notification hanging there for a while.

things to do after hitting the wall/when feeling really stuck in a rut: shower. do chores. walk the dog or run errands to get out of the house (but not longer than half an hour). refill water and stretch while doing it. play guitar but limit it to 20 min. check in on a family member and ask hyd. braid hair or retie it. stand up and scream a little. dance around the house and sing. give yourself a pep talk about all the stuff you have to do in order. sit somewhere new even if it’s in the same room and DECIDE it is now a new beginning because you shifted two seats to the left.

music is to block out sound, not to entertain. my house is almost always noisy; dad on the phone, mom talking to my brother, sister practicing traditional chinese instruments, brother singing along to the entire freaking hamilton soundtrack, dog barking, grandpa snoring... earbuds are savior. at cafes too. people say to only listen to instrumental and i tend to agree, but sometimes listening to my usual chillhop playlist just makes me sad and unmotivated so i alternate between a few playlists just to switch it up and keep ME AWAKE. heck i even listen to white noise, anything to drown out distracting interactions

ALSO earbuds are good even if there’s no one else around because they prevent you from getting up to do random stuff (cordsssssss hallelujah for annoying cords). ESPECIALLY keeping you away from mindlessly checking your phone.

get out. really just leave the house or wherever you normally study. i go to a different cafe every time i need to hardcore study just because being in my house makes me feel relaxed. if i pay for a starbucks coffee, i am NOT going home until i use that starbucks time well and do something productive. also this gives me a conscious reminder of my time because i have to go home at a certain time etc. etc.

when in midst of a break-down, tell someone. not in the “oh no you’re going to hurt someone or hurt yourself” sense, but because it helps you finish that break-down up and feel re-motivated. crying to my mom about an assignment may or may not help with the assignment, but at least i cried and now i don’t need to agonize for another hour over the stress. text-spamming a friend may be stupid in retrospect but as long as you go “HEY I’M DYING LISTEN TO MY STUPID LIFE CHOICES FOR 5 MIN” and then get right back to work it will help you move past the stress and get back in a grind.

for exams, just make a list of things to know better then attend after school hours. at our school the teachers have after school hours or free periods and they are *usually* very happy to engage with a student and answer questions regarding material during this time. for finals, i usually don’t try to cram everything. i look over all my notes and vocab and just make a super basic list of things i dont know well (or highlight the terms in my notes). making an entire comprehensive study guide of these things takes too long. then i go to the teacher and talk it all out. just make sure i understand and then while talking scribble down a couple words so i can remember. after doing this sometime during the week before the final exam i can HANDLE ITTTT and i don’t need to cram quite as much. (this probably works because i’m an auditory learner.)

BONUS TIPS FOR STUDYING LATE AT NIGHT! all-nighters are scary; try to get at least a couple hrs of sleep or your days will all seem like one and you’ll lose your sense of time and school and classes. food gives energy. hot drinks keep you awake. if you are tired you will feel colder (idk why but everything is always colder if i’m underslept). DO NOT expect a comfortable aesthetic night; if you get any blankets more than necessary you will fall asleep.

there’s probably more but i really don’t remember it ahhaha i’ll add it later if i think of it. and i know there are so many good things that i don’t do while studying like making a schedule etc etc etc... it’s just they don’t always work for me, these are my fail-safes haha.
