can i ask the device you use to program? i’m a beginner 🤭 hoping to begin compsci school in the fall, and i was looking at an hp 840 g6, i7 core, 32 gb ram, 1 tb ssd.
i’m just afraid to get it and have it be all wrong for the software required as i’m currently using a chromebook which doesn’t meet the requirements whatsoever and it hinders my self studying
if it helps to specify; currently i’m learning html, css, then into JS
and i’d like to eventually go on to learn c++!
Hiya!!
I answered a similar ask about what I use! Here is the link: [LINK] 💗
Also, someone asked for recommendations for what to look for when buying a laptop/desktop for programming, which I answered her: [LINK] 💗
Hope this helps! Good luck finding your new device! I would not recommend a Chromebook for heavy coding just because I tried it and it didn't work out for me! The laptop you mentioned sounds really good to me! I would pick that one but if you can find something similar to the specs but cheaper, I would go for the cheaper obviously!

I have got Sims 2 Origin version successfully running, with little drama, on a computer with the following spec: - Windows 11 - i5, Generation 11, clock speed 3.2 GHz - 1 GB platter (old-style) drive capable of running at 9600 rpm - 16 GB memory - Nvidia GTX 1070 (There are other specs involved but none are relevant here)
As far as I can see, the important questions for The Sims 2 are below. Note that most of the above is also useful to consider for other Windows 3D games dating between 1999 (when all Windows games worldwide assumed a 32-bit environment; American games from as early as 1996 may apply) and 2007 (when games started to consider hyperthreading):
What version of The Sims 2 do you have? It’s easier with the Origin version, as you do not have to worry about incompatible DRM; the Origin DRM’s still getting updated for Windows 11. With this version, I run The Sims 2 on Windows 11, almost as if it was the Windows 7 or Windows XP computers I used to use. I have the CD/DVD version of Sims 2 as well, but do not use it because I know that both Safedisc and Securom are out of commission for all Microsoft operating systems. I wouldn’t normally recommend this, but you may need to consider some sort of DRM removal technique to get disk-based Sims 2 running on either Windows 11 or a new version of Windows 10. (The original unpatched Windows 10 might not need that, but I would strongly advise not doing so, if only because Windows 10 mostly stops getting security patches in 2025). The more legal option would be getting a fast computer (one that meets both the specs I’ve given and , sticking a virtual machine on it, installing your current operating system on that.  The 12th and 13th-gen i5s and i7s, with 32 GB/64GB of memory, can run Windows 7 and Sims 2 at an acceptable speed, if you give them enough space (try to allocate at least twice the space of your complete installation, including all mods, to the virtual machine). Windows XP is even easier to simulate, and Windows 98 will do. Virtual machines often require a fair bit of technical knowledge to set up (but are almost as easy to use as loading any other program), so your local computer expert should be consulted on the procedure. Expect to pay for 2-4 hours of that expert’s time if only Sims 2 and Windows are going on the virtual machine (including installation - exact speed depends on installation method and hard drive speed). The expert may also ask for proof you actually own a copy of the operating system you wish to install, but not necessarily. It goes without saying that if you have the disc version, you need to get a DVD drive. An internal DVD drive commits you to a Tower (Small Form Factor or Full) if you want a desktop and at least a 15.6″ for a laptop. Expect to pay less than £30 for a DVD drive, which can be fitted quickly by many computer experts. Most laptops don’t come with a DVD drive and some won’t let one be added at any price. You can get an external DVD drive instead, to plug into a USB port. This will not affect the gameplay but the cable is one more thing to fail and unless you plan to play Sims 2 on the move, an internal drive is likely to be more convenient. What is the clock speed of the processor? The guide above covers the type and generation of chip. However, Sims 2 can’t use multiple threads. The benefits of those elements chips will be felt more in browsing for new Sims 2 mods than in playing Sims 2 itself. However, Sims 2 benefits strongly from clock speed (that is, how fast each core can process). Downside: you’ll need to check each processor listed with each computer against a table that shows what each processor can do. Wikipedia has you covered if you put the processor’s company and type (e.g. “AMD Ryzen” or “Intel Core”). If an advert only shows company and type, without the exact processor name, put it aside; that might be precise enough for the average gamer, but not a power gamer like you! Check the clock speed is at least a match for your current computer to avoid disappointment. Upside: you can have The Sims 2 and other tasks like the internet open on your computer at the same time - The Sims 2 only ever uses one core, so you can use the other 3 (or 5, or 7) to browse the internet, download mods or any other multi-tasking you need your computer to do. Even running multiple Sims 2 sessions simultaneously. Does the computer have, or can it fit, a proper video card?
Some motherboards have a video card that can easily handle The Sims 2. I would advise not to gamble. Especially since not all the motherboard cooling issues with onboard chips of yesteryear are resolved for all current designs. Most if not all modern desktop motherboards for towers have a full PCI-E motherboard slot. Excellent. Now check no other cards will be in the way of either end (RAM slots are particularly likely to be a problem, due to some RAM cards now being aesthetic rather than just functional). Nvdia no longer sells a desktop video card that is incapable of running The Sims 2. However, new video cards are expensive and there are many, many second-hand video cards that fit in that motherboard slot that won’t run Sims 2 very well. In particular, don’t touch the Nvdia 8000 series with a 10-foot bargepole. Better a 6000 or 7000 series - or, if it fits, the card you already use - than an 8000-series. An ATI Radeon after 5500 will work as well. For mobile, your options are much more limited. It’s not just a question of what mobile video card you should get (but check if it can outperform the desktop cards quoted above), you must also consider the airflow of the laptop you will use. Get the laptop with the best airflow you can that meets the other criteria. Computer salespeople are likely to give you a strange look, but a laptop specialist will understand and know what to look for. Note: the very best video cards attached to Windows 7 machines may fit into PCI-E slots and thus allow you to avoid the uncertainty and expense. Ask a computer expert, and ideally let that expert see your card, before committing to that path. Also be aware that your card in this instance is likely to be a bit of a bottleneck if you play games designed to push computers built in the last 10 years. (If your browser and The Sims 2 are the toughest programs you will use, this will never be an issue). Check in particular if your video card has drivers for the operating system you want to use (if your card is out of support, it might not). If you get the chance to test drive the computer before committing, the best way to test the graphics is to get your Sims to set something on fire. Preferably a nice inferno with a dozen things on fire and several Sims on the lot to track (with some high-poly clothing or hair if possible), while time crosses an in-game hour boundary. Video systems that aren’t good enough for Sims 2 often slow down when trying to process fire in ways that can be hidden in standard gameplay. How fast is the hard drive? If the computer has an SSD or M.2 hard drive, and it’s at least 100 GB more than you would need for The Sims 2 plus your entire mod folder, you don’t need any other number; the SSD/M.2 will be fast enough. The slowest one’s about four times faster than the quickest consumer platter drive. Stick the operating system and The Sims 2 on it, put everything else on some other drive if needed to keep at least 50 GB clear on the SSD/M.2. If these include many other programs or frequently-accessed, get an(other) SSD, if you specifically need a backup/archive drive instead, a platter drive is OK. If the only drive in the computer is a platter drive, you have two options: 1) Find out the drive speed. The Sims 2 should not be played on any platter drive slower than 7200 rpm. Avoid anything faster than 9600 rpm because it’s apt to sound like a plane is taking off. 2) Get the computer anyway and get an M.2 or SSD drive to go with it. For the sake of your patience, install Windows onto that drive, then install The Sims 2 there as well. Continue to use the original drive for backup purposes. In the case of option 2, get a drive from a company you recognise. Samsung has an excellent reputation for its SSD drives Check SSD physical size and accessories before purchase. Most are 2.5″ (perfect for laptops). If you want it for a desktop, either check there’s a mounting kit with it, or buy one (they’re quite common and cheap). Get a computer expert to fit it and (if you want) clone the data you want onto the drive. Is there enough memory? Please, please, please do not attempt to run Windows 11 on less than 16 GB. I tried and it literally took 20 minutes to start the computer - even before installing anything on it. Get at least 16 GB. If all you plan to do is Sims 2 and internet, that’s all you’ll need. However, if you also like to play the latest games, get 32 GB or even 64 GB. You can’t get memory for these computers that’s too slow for The Sims 2. However, you can get memory too fast for the motherboard, so check with the manual or your local computer expert before purchase. Bonus after purchase: Have you installed the 3 GB patch? 8 GB isn’t enough to run Windows 11 at a decent pace, let alone anything on top of it. The leftover from 16 GB is more than The Sims 2 can use. By default, it can only use 2 GB. However, the 3 GB patch is stable enough that I would advise any Simmer running it on a Windows 10/11 machine with more than 8 GB of memory to install it. You put this on after you’ve installed the game and all its official expansion packs. Mods can be added and removed freely after this without impeding the function of the 3 GB patch. Bonus after purchase: Did you get a new monitor or video card?
There’s no obligation to get a new monitor with the new computer - converters are cheap if your current monitor needs one. However, if you did get a monitor and it’s a widescreen, get a widescreen patch for The Sims 2 and install it. This will help you get resolution options that make sense. The same is needed for a new video card - even if you kept your old monitor, it’s possible your video card may be able to drive it at a resolution The Sims 2 did not anticipate needing to use. I believe multiple patches of this type exist for The Sims 2; experiment and find out which works for you. Bonus after purchase: Check your video card settings After you install the video card, make sure you go into the video driver control panel and check the following (note that you can set this per application, and the Origin version of The Sims 2 may be controllable via the Origin entry if The Sims 2 itself does not show there): Ambient Occlusion - Turn off Antialiasing FXAA - Turn off Antialiasing - Application-controlled. This is because The Sims 2 has some antialiasing and Nvidia’s in particular clashes. Power management mode - Optimal power (if in any doubt about your system’s cooling, especially important on laptops that are used while travelling) V-sync - Application-controlled. Again, Sims 2 can handle this and the video card driver may be a hindrance. Check anything else your widescreen patch tells you to check as well.
Finally, I strongly recommend you launch the Origin version of Sims 2 from its executable, not any other method. This skips the program’s propensity to try sending stuff to the internet that it does not need to send. It’s not like there’ll be any new updates for the Sims 2 coming from EA!
So You Need To Buy A Computer But You Don't Know What Specs Are Good These Days
Hi.
This is literally my job.
Lots of people are buying computers for school right now or are replacing computers as their five-year-old college laptop craps out so here's the standard specs you should be looking for in a (windows) computer purchase in August 2023.
PROCESSOR
Intel i5 (no older than 10th Gen)
Ryzen 7
You can get away with a Ryzen 5 but an intel i3 should be an absolute last resort. You want at least an intel i5 or a Ryzen 7 processor. The current generation of intel processors is 13, but anything 10 or newer is perfectly fine. DO NOT get a higher performance line with an older generation; a 13th gen i5 is better than an 8th gen i7. (Unfortunately I don't know enough about ryzens to tell you which generation is the earliest you should get, but staying within 3 generations is a good rule of thumb)
RAM
8GB absolute minimum
If you don't have at least 8GB RAM on a modern computer it's going to be very, very slow. Ideally you want a computer with at least 16GB, and it's a good idea to get a computer that will let you add or swap RAM down the line (nearly all desktops will let you do this, for laptops you need to check the specs for Memory and see how many slots there are and how many slots are available; laptops with soldered RAM cannot have the memory upgraded - this is common in very slim laptops)
STORAGE
256GB SSD
Computers mostly come with SSDs these days; SSDs are faster than HDDs but typically have lower storage for the same price. That being said: SSDs are coming down in price and if you're installing your own drive you can easily upgrade the size for a low cost. Unfortunately that doesn't do anything for you for the initial purchase.
A lot of cheaper laptops will have a 128GB SSD and, because a lot of stuff is stored in the cloud these days, that can be functional. I still recommend getting a bit more storage than that because it's nice if you can store your music and documents and photos on your device instead of on the cloud. You want to be able to access your files even if you don't have internet access.
But don't get a computer with a big HDD instead of getting a computer with a small SSD. The difference in speed is noticeable.
SCREEN (laptop specific)
Personally I find that touchscreens have a negative impact on battery life and are easier to fuck up than standard screens. They are also harder to replace if they get broken. I do not recommend getting a touch screen unless you absolutely have to.
A lot of college students especially tend to look for the biggest laptop screen possible; don't do that. It's a pain in the ass to carry a 17" laptop around campus and with the way that everything is so thin these days it's easier to damage a 17" screen than a 14" screen.
On the other end of that: laptops with 13" screens tend to be very slim devices that are glued shut and impossible to work on or upgrade.
Your best bet (for both functionality and price) is either a 14" or a 15.6" screen. If you absolutely positively need to have a 10-key keyboard on your laptop, get the 15.6". If you need something portable more than you need 10-key, get a 14"
FORM FACTOR (desktop specific)
If you purchase an all-in-one desktop computer I will begin manifesting in your house physically. All-in-ones take away every advantage desktops have in terms of upgradeability and maintenance; they are expensive and difficult to repair and usually not worth the cost of disassembling to upgrade.
There are about four standard sizes of desktop PC: All-in-One (the size of a monitor with no other footprint), Tower (Big! probably at least two feet long in two directions), Small Form Factor Tower (Very moderate - about the size of a large shoebox), and Mini/Micro/Tiny (Small! about the size of a small hardcover book).
If you are concerned about space you are much better off getting a MicroPC and a bracket to put it on your monitor than you are getting an all-in-one. This will be about a million percent easier to work on than an all-in-one and this way if your monitor dies your computer is still functional.
Small form factor towers and towers are the easiest to work on and upgrade; if you need a burly graphics card you need to get a full size tower, but for everything else a small form factor tower will be fine. Most of our business sales are SFF towers and MicroPCs, the only time we get something larger is if we have to put a $700 graphics card in it. SFF towers will accept small graphics cards and can handle upgrades to the power supply; MicroPCs can only have the RAM and SSD upgraded and don't have room for any other components or their own internal power supply.
WARRANTY
Most desktops come with either a 1 or 3 year warranty; either of these is fine and if you want to upgrade a 1 year to a 3 year that is also fine. I've generally found that if something is going to do a warranty failure on desktop it's going to do it the first year, so you don't get a hell of a lot of added mileage out of an extended warranty but it doesn't hurt and sometimes pays off to do a 3-year.
Laptops are a different story. Laptops mostly come with a 1-year warranty and what I recommend everyone does for every laptop that will allow it is to upgrade that to the longest warranty you can get with added drop/damage protection. The most common question our customers have about laptops is if we can replace a screen and the answer is usually "yes, but it's going to be expensive." If you're purchasing a low-end laptop, the parts and labor for replacing a screen can easily cost more than half the price of a new laptop. HOWEVER, the way that most screens get broken is by getting dropped. So if you have a warranty with drop protection, you just send that sucker back to the factory and they fix it for you.
So, if it is at all possible, check if the manufacturer of a laptop you're looking at has a warranty option with drop protection. Then, within 30 days (though ideally on the first day you get it) of owning your laptop, go to the manufacturer site, register your serial number, and upgrade the warranty. If you can't afford a 3-year upgrade at once set a reminder for yourself to annually renew. But get that drop protection, especially if you are a college student or if you've got kids.
And never, ever put pens or pencils on your laptop keyboard. I've seen people ruin thousand dollar, brand-new laptops that they can't afford to fix because they closed the screen on a ten cent pencil. Keep liquids away from them too.
LIFESPAN
There's a reasonable chance that any computer you buy today will still be able to turn on and run a program or two in ten years. That does not mean that it is "functional."
At my office we estimate that the functional lifespan of desktops is 5-7 years and the functional lifespan of laptops is 3-5 years. Laptops get more wear and tear than desktops and desktops are easier to upgrade to keep them running. At 5 years for desktops and 3 years for laptops you should look at upgrading the RAM in the device and possibly consider replacing the SSD with a new (possibly larger) model, because SSDs and HDDs don't last forever.
COST
This means that you should think of your computers as an annual investment rather than as a one-time purchase. It is more worthwhile to pay $700 for a laptop that will work well for five years than it is to pay $300 for a laptop that will be outdated and slow in one year (which is what will happen if you get an 8th gen i3 with 8GB RAM). If you are going to get a $300 laptop try to get specs as close as possible to the minimums I've laid out here.
If you have to compromise on these specs, the one that is least fixable is the processor. If you get a laptop with an i3 processor you aren't going to be able to upgrade it even if you can add more RAM or a bigger SSD. If you have to get lower specs in order to afford the device put your money into the processor and make sure that the computer has available slots for upgrade and that neither the RAM nor the SSD is soldered to the motherboard. (one easy way to check this is to search "[computer model] RAM upgrade" on youtube and see if anyone has made a video showing what the inside of the laptop looks like and how much effort it takes to replace parts)
Computers are expensive right now. This is frustrating, because historically consumer computer prices have been on a downward trend but since 2020 that trend has been all over the place. Desktop computers are quite expensive at the moment (August 2023) and decent laptops are extremely variably priced.
If you are looking for a decent, upgradeable laptop that will last you a few years, here are a couple of options that you can purchase in August 2023 that have good prices for their specs:
14" Lenovo - $670 - 11th-gen i5, 16GB RAM, and 512GB SSD
15.6" HP - $540 - 11th-gen i5, 16GB RAM, and 256GB SSD
14" Dell - $710 - 12th-gen i5, 16GB RAM, and 256GB SSD
If you are looking for a decent, affordable desktop that will last you a few years, here are a couple of options that you can purchase in August 2023 that have good prices for their specs:
SFF HP - $620 - 10th-gen i5, 16GB RAM, 1TB SSD
SFF Lenovo - $560 - Ryzen 7 5000 series, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD
Dell Tower - $800 - 10th-gen i7, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD
If I were going to buy any of these I'd probably get the HP laptop or the Dell Tower. The HP Laptop is actually a really good price for what it is.
Anyway happy computering.

With so many options out there, picking the right present can be daunting. Fear not! We’ve compiled an ultimate guide to help you find a gift that will make his holiday season extra special—whether he's a tech enthusiast, an outdoor adventurer, or a sentimental soul.
Why Choose the Perfect Christmas Gift for Your Boyfriend?
Choosing the ideal christmas gift for boyfriend isn't just about giving something nice; it's a way to show your love and appreciation. A thoughtfully chosen gift can strengthen your bond and create lasting memories. The goal is to find something that resonates with his interests, makes his daily life easier, or adds a touch of joy.
Tech Gadgets That Make Life Easier and More Fun
Smartphone
When it comes to tech gadgets, one of the best Christmas gifts for a boyfriend is a smartphone. Smartphones have become essential in our daily lives, and having one with the latest features will surely make your partner happy. When selecting a phone, consider his tastes and lifestyle. For instance, if he's an avid gamer, opt for a phone with a high-performance graphics card. If he enjoys taking pictures or videos, look for phones with great cameras and larger storage capacity.
Popular models include iPhones, Samsung Galaxy phones, Google Pixel phones, and OnePlus phones. They come with various features, from excellent cameras and storage options to powerful processors and large displays.
Laptop
If you're looking for the perfect Christmas gift for your boyfriend, consider a laptop. A laptop can be an ideal choice to help him stay connected and productive on the go. Working together with the artist or photographer will ensure that the finished product is exactly what they're looking for.
Christmas Mug
If you're looking for a cozy and festive gift, a Christmas mug is an excellent choice. These mugs come in various styles to fit any personality, from traditional holiday designs to funny sayings or cool graphics. A Christmas mug will not only make a great addition to his favorite cupboard but also bring some extra holiday cheer to his special occasions.
Consider pairing the mug with some gourmet coffee, hot cocoa mix, or even a set of matching coasters to create a complete gift package. Your boyfriend will appreciate the thoughtfulness and enjoy sipping his favorite beverages in his new favorite mug.
Personalized Christmas Bottle

Trendy Shoes
Shoes make an excellent gift for your boyfriend during the holidays. Whether you're looking for something stylish, functional, or comfortable, there's surely a perfect pair of shoes out there to fit his needs.
For a dressier look, consider oxfords or loafers in classic leather materials. They look great with suits or dress pants and can easily transition from work to evening functions. If your boyfriend prefers a more casual style, sneakers are always a popular choice. The variety in the sneaker world ensures you'll find something unique and stylish to fit his personality.
For the adventure-loving boyfriend, hiking boots are a practical and fashionable choice. They'll ensure his feet are taken care of no matter the conditions, making them perfect for outdoor enthusiasts.
Elegant Jewelry
Jewelry is a timeless and meaningful gift that can express your feelings and make your boyfriend feel truly appreciated. There are many pieces to choose from that can make him feel special during the festive season.
Consider statement jewelry with bold, eye-catching designs or personalized pieces with his name or initials engraved onto them. If you've been together for some time, choose jewelry that celebrates your journey, such as eternity bands or promise rings. For the man who loves luxury, sophisticated cufflinks or a sleek gold watch will make an elegant statement.
A piece of jewelry is a thoughtful gift that will remind your boyfriend of you every time he wears it. With so many options available, you're sure to find something that he'll love for years to come.
Custom Belt
A custom belt provides a stylish, practical, and affordable gift option for your boyfriend this Christmas. Made to fit any size and style, a custom belt can be tailored to make the perfect statement piece.
Leather belts made from quality materials like calfskin or suede offer a classic and timeless look. For something more casual, canvas or webbing belts come in a variety of colors and patterns. Adding embellishments like studs, chains, or buckles can give the belt extra flair.
Consider personalizing the belt with a message or initials for an extra special touch. A well-chosen custom belt will be a stylish and practical addition to your boyfriend's wardrobe.

SPECIAL LAPTOP DEALS FOR STUDENTS...
HOW FILTER OUT AND BUY THE BEST PRODUCTS....
There are thousands of laptop sales happening everyday through online and offline. So, finding a good laptop is simple, you just need to go through a YouTube video or find someone who knows about laptops. By that, we can simply buy a laptop with the information we've got. But the problem is the price, we need to find the best possible price to buy the products.
We try to find the best possible price that can get for anything that we buy. Nowadays we have a vast number of options to buy from, like offline shops near us and thousands of online websites that sell things. So, our goal is to get the best out of it.
Mostly people are more convenient in buying online than offline, because they can have the maximum option. They can get so they can buy at the lowest price. But there causes another problem, which is ‘less quality'. Less price can sometimes cause less quality in the product.
So, we can’t just blindly buy the lowest-priced product, and there we need to filter our products to buy the best with what we have.
LAPTOP DEALS...
Surely, for buying a laptop also need to look for the above things that we’ve talked about. Laptops vary in their specifications to the brands they provide. There are number of brands that manufacture and sell laptops like ASUS, Acer, Lenovo, Apple, Infinix, Samsung, MSI, etc. A laptop is used for browsing the internet, creating a document, playing games etc.
Some laptops are used for specific purposes like Laptops used for gaming and office work. Laptops that are used for gaming comes with dedicated graphics card, which is very expensive so if you are not a gamer, you don’t need to buy a laptop which has a graphics card it is can be also heavy so it is not so easily portable for everyday office use. Instead, you can opt for easily portable laptops specifically made for light use.
Companies provide budget gaming laptops and high-end laptops for users and they also provide laptops for office work. For office works you only need processors like Intel i3 or i5 which are less expensive. But for gaming or editing you might need the higher options like the Intel core 13th gen i7 or i9 or the AMD Ryzen 7 or Ryzen 9.
Another thing you surely need to look for when buying a laptop is to buy the brand which has a service store near you. So that you can repair your device without any worries and don’t need to call customer service a hundred times or don't need to drive a hundred miles to go to the Service Centre. You can buy laptops from the online store or can buy straight from the official store. Despite being less expensive, purchasing a branded laptop will give you the best quality...

So my laptop has been grindingly slow lately. Now, I'm not expecting a lot of speed out of it; I got it essentially for free a few years back, and it's around 14 years old. Further, I accumulate open browser tabs very easily, and I tend to run just a few too many things at once. So I'd kind of gotten used to things just taking a long time.
But once my wife complained this morning that she couldn't get the videos I'm hosting to our internal network to stream cleanly, I actually took a look at some diagnostics, and it turns out a process named "tracker-miner-fs" was eating one whole processor core. Now, just from the name it sounds like I (or, more worryingly, someone else) put a Bitcoin miner on the machine and forgot about it, but it turns out "tracker" is the metadata and full-text indexer engine for the Gnome desktop's Nautilus file manager — and it has this known bug where it trips over certain files and just starts looping every trying to re-index them.
I don't ever use the full text or metadata searches in Nautilus, so having it running at all is just wasted processor (and drive access) time, and there's a way to turn all the indexing off. So I did that earlier today.
And when I just queued up the next several days of Daily Theatre episode reblogs and posts here, it took maybe a tenth of the time that it took last time — just because I was spending so much time waiting for Tumblr pages to load and reload and post. That seems worth the trouble!
(The laptop is a Dell Precision M4500, pitched in 2010 as a "mobile workstation": it's got an eight-core i7 and an NVIDIA GPU, and a bunch of ports and accessories, at the cost of being somewhat heavy and ungainly. I've been running an Ubuntu variant on it for years.)

The Intel Core i9-14901KE for Content Creators and Gamers
Tumblr media
Intel Raptor Lake processors
Intel stealthily launched the “14001” series of 14th-Gen Raptor Lake Refresh processors. The chips lack Intel’s current microarchitectures‘ Efficiency cores (E-cores) and have just Performance cores (P-cores). This new CPU series is aimed for embedded applications and includes Intel’s first overclockable embedded processor, the Core i9-14901KE.
Intel has stealthily introduced 14th-Gen Raptor Lake Refresh processors ahead of its Arrow Lake-S desktop CPUs. The unusual 14001 series chips have just Performance cores (P-cores) and no Efficiency cores (E-cores) like Intel’s latest architectures. These  CPUs, designed for embedded applications, have an intriguing overclockable top model.
The downside is that these CPUs are embedded (soldered-in). They are not user-replaceable and must be purchased with an industrial motherboard. This makes them unattainable for most fans and consumers.
The new E-core-free portfolio from Intel includes three Core i9 models, two Core i7 models, and four Core i5 models. The flagship Core i9-14901KE appears to be an overclockable K-series chip, a rarity for embedded Intel processors.
This series is Intel’s first E-core-free series since the 11th generation, departing from their hybrid architecture plan. Intel can reuse Raptor Lake dies with damaged E-cores but otherwise working components.
New processors have benefits. They eliminate hybrid architecture difficulties like workload scheduling between core types. Many applications don’t need E-cores and work best with six to eight physical cores of any type.
Each Core i9 model has eight Raptor Cove P-cores, 16 threads, and 36MB L3 cache. They differ mostly in clock speeds and power targets. The top-tier Core i9-14901KE has a 5.8GHz turbo clock, 3.8GHz base clock, and 125W long-term TDP. The Core i9-14901E decreases long-term power usage to 65W with a minor performance trade-off, while the 45W variant is the most power-efficient.
Like the i9, the Core i7 has eight cores and 16 threads, but lower speeds and smaller L3 caches. Core i7-14701E and TE run at 65W and 45W, respectively. The worst Core i5 versions have six cores, 12 threads, and 24MB L3 cache. The Core i5-14501 and Core i5-14401 series match their desktop equivalents. Boost clocks and integrated graphics performance differ most.
Intel UHD 770 Graphics with 32 execution units are on all versions except the Core i5-14501. The Core i5-14501 series uses 24 execution units for UHD 730 Graphics.
Intel’s surprising revelation shows its capacity to innovate inside product lines, potentially opening new markets for specialised computer solutions.
The i9-11900K is a good CPU for Intel E-core sceptics. Amazon.com currently sells it for $260.
Intel’s most recent portfolio of 14th-Gen CPUs represents another step forward in chip technology. The overclockable Core i9-14901KE is one of the best of them, providing both pros and hobbyists with great performance and versatility. This post explores the capabilities, features, and potential of the Core i9-14901KE, emphasising the reasons it represents a noteworthy upgrade to Intel’s CPU lineup.
Introducing the Core i9-14901KE
Among Intel’s latest E-core-less CPUs, the Core i9-14901KE delivers optimal performance for demanding applications. Its ability to overclock, which boosts performance, makes it stand out.
Design and Execution
The high-performance Core i9-14901KE uses Intel’s 14nm production process to skip E-cores and use P-cores. Perfect for 3D rendering, video editing, and gaming, this architecture prioritises processing speed and power.
Important details:
Speed of Base Clock: 3.7 GHz
Peak Turbo-Boost Speed: 5.3 GHz
Number of Cores: 10 P-cores
There are 20 threads.
20 MB of L3 cache
Thermal Design Power (TDP): 125 watts
Core i9-14901KE Potential Overclocking
One of the most attractive aspects of the Core i9-14901KE is that it can be overclocked. By adjusting the CPU’s parameters, enthusiasts can unlock more performance by reaching faster clock rates. With the help of its Extreme Tuning Utility (XTU),  Intel offers strong overclocking support. Users may tweak voltages, clock rates, and other settings to achieve the ideal compromise between performance and stability.
Cooling Factors
To handle the higher heat output from overclocking the Core i9-14901KE, efficient cooling solutions are needed. It is advised to use specialised water cooling loops or high-quality AIO (All-in-One) liquid coolers to maintain ideal temperatures and guarantee dependable operation during demanding workloads.
E-core-less Design: An Innovative Approach
The Core i9-14901KE‘s decision to forgo E-cores is a reflection of Intel’s strategy emphasis on optimising both single and multi-threaded performance. This CPU provides improved performance for programmes that benefit from higher clock speeds and more core counts by allocating all resources to P-cores.
Benefits of Architecture Without an E-Core:
Better Single-Core Performance
P-cores perform better for single-threaded applications since they are designed for high clock speeds and minimal latency.
Improved Multi-Core Efficiency
Since every core is high-performance, multi-threaded programmes may take advantage of the entire processing capacity without having to deal with the mixed workload that E-cores handle.
Simplified Power Management
Power delivery and thermal management are simplified in the absence of E-cores, which may result in more reliable performance under load.
Comparing and Observing Actual Performance
The Core i9-14901KE has shown considerable performance gains over its predecessors, according to early benchmarks. The CPU shows excellent single-core and multi-core results on artificial benchmarks, indicating its potential in practical applications. Benchmarks for gaming demonstrate notable gains in responsiveness and frame rates, especially in CPU-bound a game.
Productivity and Content Creation:
Professionals and content makers should use the Core i9-14901KE for software development, 3D rendering, and video editing. It reduces rendering times and boosts productivity in demanding processes due to its high clock rates and core count.
Harmony and Prospective-Looking
PCIe 5.0, DDR5 memory , and enhanced networking are supported by Intel’s Z790 chipset in the Core i9-14901KE. Build a cutting-edge system using the newest technology to future-proof your investment.
Upgrade Route and Duration
Users may anticipate continuing compatibility with new technologies and updates because to Intel’s commitment to maintaining the 14th-Gen platform. Because of this, the Core i9-14901KE is a wise option for anyone wishing to construct a high-performance system that will last for many years.
Conclusion: A Novel Standard in High-Efficiency Computing
A new benchmark in high-performance computing is set by the overclockable Core i9-14901KE, which provides unmatched power and versatility. Its E-core-less design and strong overclocking potential set it apart as a top option for professionals, gamers, and enthusiasts looking for extreme performance. With its dramatic advancement in CPU technology, the Core i9-14901KE promises outstanding performance for a variety of demanding workloads, demonstrating Intel’s continued innovation.

A Shallow Dive Into: Computer Hardware
I made a post on tech geekery (I checked, it's geekery, according to Google anyways) long ago but that was pretty worthless with barely any information, and back then I only just got into the hardware side of stuff, so I wasn't qualified to talk about that yet, but now I think I am, so here goes. Also, if you're not Alex and reading this, a disclaimer, that I oversimplify a lot, and not everything will be perfectly accurate because I'm writing this on a mobile phone, so I can't research as much as I'd like to, but if there's a glaring mistake, please leave a comment so I can correct it.
There are mainly 4 components that are really important in a computer. Those being the CPU, GPU, RAM, and storage device. Yeah, there are, like, motherboards and PSUs and stuff, but like, what would I really say about them? All you really need in a motherboard is it to have decent I/O and like match your CPU chipset, and PSUs just need to be a reputable brand and enough power to handle all your components. I’m only really talking about things with specs and stuff.
CPU
There are two main CPU architectures in consumer electronics, ARM and x86(-64). ARM is what your mobile phones, certain chromebooks and low power laptops and recent Mac and iPad devices use. ARM is more energy efficient but it has less power relatively, although Apple’s implementations are pretty powerful. X86-64 or AMD64 is what modern desktops and laptops use. Intel and AMD are really the only two producers of x86 but ARM is more lenient with its licensing.
So, generally in a CPU, you’ll want to look at its clock speeds, L1-3 cache, and core and thread counts. Clock speeds generally measure the speed, but it should not be the only metric. L1-3 cache are memory modules built directly into the CPU so it can process data faster, and core and thread counts contribute to multitaskability. You should also look at memory type, chipset and socket. Memory type can be DDR3-5, which I will talk about below, and the others have too many kinds so you can check out the Further Watching section. The former are performance specs, and the latter are compatibility stuff.
Intel
Intel has mainly 3 brands. Xeon, Celeron/Pentium, and of course, Core. Xeon is their server and workstation CPUs, Celeron and Pentium are really weak budget CPUs, which they dumbly renamed Intel Processors? The heck? WHYYYYY??? Ahem, and Core is what most consumers will want. Core are further split into i3, i5, i7 and i9. I3 are budget friendly CPUs, i5 is mid-range, i7 is higher end, and i9 is enthusiast grade.
Intel CPU names look generally like i5-13500K. The first two numbers (or just the one, in older models) denote the generation, so that CPU is 13th gen. The last three numbers generally denote performance tiers, so 500 is more powerful than i5-13490F. For the letters at the end, refer to the Further Watching.
Addendum: Oh, for god's sake Intel, do you have nothing better to do??? Intel is scrapping the i. Their processors are now called Intel Core Ultra 7/9 Processor and Core 5 Processor. Worse still, names are like Intel Core Ultra 9 Processor 1090H. Whaaaaat the freaaaaakkkkinnngggg helllll???
AMD
AMD likewise has EPYC, Athlon, and Ryzen respectively. Ryzen is further divided into 3, 5, 7, 9 and Threadripper. Yeah, they mean the exact same things as Intel minus the i. Threadripper is the middle ground between Ryzen and EPYC. Good for workstations, multithreaded applications and servers and decent enough for gaming but not its purpose. Ryzen also employs a similar naming scheme, like Ryzen 5 5600X. The first number is generation, the rest is performance tier. 4-6 is high performance, 7-9 are enthusiast and the rest are mainstream. Ryzen doesn’t have too many letters, so I’ll discuss them here. X is high performance, G has Radeon Vega integrated GPUs, T is low power desktop, S is low power with GPU, H, U and M are high performance, standard and low power mobile.
GPU
GPUs handle Graphics Processing. Everything you see on this screen is thanks to the GPU. There are two kinds of GPUs. Integrated and discrete/dedicated. Integrated graphics come with the CPU and aren’t for much more than light usage, like watching videos, indie/retro gaming etc. In the past, if you wanted to do more than light gaming, you would need a discrete card, but AMD’s CPUs (Or APUs, Accelerated PU, as AMD calls their processors with integrated GPUs) have been slowly closing the gap. If you have an AMD APU, not all hope is lost (for gaming). AMD and NVIDIA have had the duopoly on the GPU market, but Intel is coming out with their own too now.
GPU Specs to Look Out For: Core Count and clock speeds are basically the same as CPU. Dedicated GPUs also have their own VRAM (videoRAM), unlike integrated which use system RAM which makes them in general slower. Modern games require at least 8 GB of VRAM, but you can survive with less, I game on 4GB of VRAM :P. There are more, but I’m in a rush, so here, the first result I found in a google search :P https://www.binarytides.com/graphics-card-specs-explained/
AMD
AMD only really has one line unlike NVIDIA which makes my job easier, the Radeon. Their recent GPUs use the RDNA Architecture. Their GPU names are in the form 6950XT. First number is generation, ranging from 5-7 as of the time of writing, the rest are the tier, from 500-950. XT slots in between tiers, like 6700XT is between the 6700 but worse than 6800. Their new cards also have XTX, which is used in the 7900XTX because it’s the best they have to offer.
NVIDIA
NVIDIA has some more lineups, like Quadro, which is for like server and ML stuff, but I’ll only talk about GeForce because the average person never needs the others. GeForce is further split into GT and RTX, but the GT lineup is discontinued. The GT cards are older consumer-grade GPUs from the 2 series to the 1600 series. The naming scheme is pretty much the same for both, like the 1660Ti. First one or two numbers(16) denote generation, and the rest denote tier. RTX cards are basically GTX but with RT (raytracing) Cores, allowing for better lighting in video games. In some games (like Minecraft) it can be a drastic improvement  while in others it’s barely noticeable.
Tumblr media
Ray tracing basically allows for more realistic lighting, although rasterization has gotten really good to the point where it’s really hard to see a difference in games like Shadow Of The Tomb Raider.

RAM or Random Access Memory
is a form of volatile storage used by the computer. Basically, the data stays on it until it is freed or power is turned off. Accessing data on RAM is much faster than accessing data on a non-volatile storage device, so the more RAM you have the faster your system runs. RAM has 2 important metrics. DDRX and MTs. CPUs and motherboards support one or sometimes two kinds of DDR (Double Data Rate) RAM. Older computers (like my desktop) use DDR3 RAM, and most relatively modern computers use DDR4 RAM, and very new computers use DDR5 RAM. If you have older than DDR3 uh the stone age called, they want their computer back. MT/s stands for Mega/million transfers per second, basically how much data it can transfer in a second, so higher the number, the faster the RAM. DDR4 RAM ranges from 1600-3200 MT/s while DDR5 ranges from 4,000-8,000 MT/s.
Storage devices are mostly Hard Disk Drives (HDDs) or Solid State Drives (SSDs). HDDs are bulky drives with a magnetic platter that stores data we're all familiar with. SSDs store data using flash memory which is an electronic form of storage, so there's no noisy mechanical parts, and they're also much faster than HDDs but also tend to be more expensive. So to store large amounts of data (unless you're rich) you're better off using HDDs, while for a boot drive an SSD is much better. Seriously, I had a 128GB SSD on my laptop with Windows installed, so it just went completely unused, and while switching over to Nobara Linux, I decided to just wipe Windows off, since I only used it for gaming before, and Linux gaming has gotten to the point where Windows is unnecessary, and oh my lord. My boot time, which used to be like more than half a minute, jumped to under 5 seconds and opening Firefox went from similar times to around a second. I seriously underestimated the impact of an SSD. Of course, it's still only 128GB, so I can’t store games on it, so I'm still stuck with very long loading screens, but if I could store it on the SSD I'm sure I'd have very little load times.
Okay, that's all of the crucial components. Of course, there are more stuff like motherboards and PSUs and coolers and stuff, but those have less impact on performance and you don't really need to care about their specs so much, so I excluded them. I would try to make it less of a wall of text, but I’m in a bit of a rush.

What Size Of Laptop Is Good For Gaming? For gaming laptops, a 15 to 17 inch size is ideal. Gaming laptops are mostly compact and portable making them easier to handle and carry while traveling. The size of the laptop depends on one’s personal preference. However, it is better to pick a gaming laptop with a 14 to 16 inch screen, since these are the most practical. If you pick a larger screen of more than 18 inches, the laptop will get heavier and bigger to carry around.
How To Choose Your First Gaming Laptop
If you are a gaming enthusiast then having a good gaming laptop is a must. Although you can play games on any normal laptop, having one that is specifically built for gaming purposes is a plus. In a gaming laptop you can have a full HD display, high-quality and vibrant graphics, a powerful processor to handle your rough gaming and a potent RAM that runs your game smoothly. All these things combine and make up an impressive laptop. However, with so many gaming laptops available in the market, it can be a hassle to find the best ones that will not cost you an arm and a leg. When purchasing the best gaming laptop under 1500$, look for these specifications; Processor: The processor or commonly known as the CPU is the brain of your laptop. If the brain isn’t smart enough to do its job rightly then nothing else will function properly. The processor's task is to direct and guide other components on what to do and how to do. So it’s important that your laptop has an excellent working CPU in it. Different CPUs are designed for different purposes however, to have the best gaming or streaming experience it is recommended to have intel Core i7 processor. Although 1TB SSDs are recommended, if you have a laptop with lesser storage you can extend it with additional drives. Graphics: Graphics is the one thing that districts a gaming laptop from an ordinary laptop. Having clear and vibrant graphics is important in order to get maximum experience out of your game. If your display has poor or dull graphics, then the whole purpose of a gaming laptop is lost. In your laptop you’ll find a GPU (Graphics Processing Unit), its function is to create clear images for your game. If you have a laptop with a higher resolution screen then you’ll need a higher GPU to get the best out of it. RAM: RAM is where all your data temporarily stores and it keeps refreshing. Having the ideal amount of RAM in your gaming laptop allows you to play your game smoothly while also running other apps in the background. For a gaming laptop under 1500 dollars, an 8GB or 16GB RAM is perfect. 8 GB RAM is ideal if you have mid-range games with other smaller tasks and 16 GB is appropriate for heavier intensity games and streaming purposes. Other Features: Other than the main components that you should look first while buying your first gaming laptop, there are some other features that you shouldn’t miss; - Make sure your laptop isn’t overheating. - The fan speed should be enough to regulate the heat and the fans shouldn;t be too noisy. - Audio should be clear and loud but not blaring that it hurts your ears. - Screen colors should be bright and clear and comfortable to the eyes. - Keyboard should be comfortable to work with and the touchpad should be responsive. - There should be enough USB Ports and SD card slots.
