Listen, this is the first time in my life I didn’t wait for my computer to die on me, so there was no desperate scramble to replace it with a prebuilt PC.  I've been tracking sales and picking up refurbished and open box parts for the past few months, and my setup fucks somewhat severely—mind you, I don’t game, so I decided to forego the GPU entirely and focus on performance and future-proofing.  My coworker gave me his old chassis last Friday, so I had everything except the CPU, and I was fixing to pick up an open box R5 9600X at Micro Center after work yesterday…but in the afternoon, the R9 9900X suddenly went down to $309 on Amazon, and my hand slipped. Nevertheless, this is approximately what I'd have shelled out for a shitty laptop or mid-tier desktop tower with the SSD soldered on and Windows baked into the price.

Windows is basically unusable now, even after you swap it out for the Titus MicroWin OS without bloatware, telemetry, and tracking—I'm not even gonna bother running it on a dual boot system while I get used to Linux, I'm just gonna rawdog the Mint distro after I assemble the computer. You will know when I've made the switch because I'll go mad with power at being able to access system settings and delete a load-bearing directory.

I didn't think getting a "desktop" was possible for me since I don't have the space/money for a big tower, but this might be a game changer. However, I don't know which ones are good? Okay so you're looking for the micro form factor, not necessarily a micropc (which sometimes means a self-contained pc in a sealed case for bargain basement prices that, generally speaking, I would want to do a lot of testing on before I'd trust one.)

Sticking with the big 3 brands again you'd be looking for the Lenovo Tiny line, the Dell Micro Form Factor, and the HP Mini desktop.

These are, generally speaking, business machines and have a higher entry price than your average desktop. However, they are also easier to upgrade than a laptop so as long as you start with a decent processor you can get lower specs on the RAM and the SSD and upgrade them at a later date.

You can also look for open box and manufacturer refurbs if you want to save some money. Desktops are a better option for refurbished computers than laptops, and business desktops are generally pulled from environments where they saw light duty. If you - or anyone - is going to look at refurbished computers I think you should still look for the specs described in the inital post but it is even more important than with a new computer purchase to pay attention to the generation of the processor; you absolutely don't want anything more than a few years old - as of now, August 2023, I wouldn't buy anything older than a 10th-generation i5/i7 processor in a refurbished device, and if it was a 10th gen I'd have a heavy preference for the i7 over the i5.

But you may be able to get some savings simply by looking for older gen processors on new devices - here's a very reasonably priced dell with great specs and a 10th-gen processor that is new in box. ($670 for an i5-10th gen, 32GB RAM, a 1TB SSD, and a Pro OS).

And if you have a VESA mount monitor, there are all kinds of brackets that are available online and compatible with pretty much all extra small form factor PCs for about $15-$40.

Old laptop is beyond saving, new laptop has been ordered. It's a refurbished 2023 Dell with Windows 10 and p much everything else I was looking for (including a numpad!). For some reason it doesn't have Bluetooth but honestly if I really need that I can just get an adaptor and use it with my desktop PC anyways.

Good News! Sims 2 runs better on my old Laptop!!!

I haven't been simming for the longest time due to the sims 2 just running super poorly on my desktop PC. It was running poorly, but after I upgraded a few things - mainly added ram and a new graphics card, the experience legit got worse. It would run "ok", but after like 20 minutes I'd run into several issues. While all issues were *technically* playable, it made me super disheartened and annoyed with the whole thing. For Christmas I ended up getting a refurbished laptop (4-5 years old). I installed the sims 2 on it and............it runs really well! Arguably much better than my PC (I suppose it just runs better on older/less powerful pcs??? idk). Haven't overly tested it, but it can run everything on High, so far no pink soup, lags, glitches or slowdowns after an hour in game and can handle all of my CC. I will be playing once I get it setup and so excited to be able to play again without ripping out my hair :)

A USB external DVD drive is somewhere around £14.99 or your regional equivalent from eBay or Amazon, although if you want it to also play Blu-Ray it'll be closer to £50. Blank DVDs are about a tenner for a pack of 25. You might also find a few refurbished mini-desktop PCs with a built-in DVD-RW drive going for less than a hundred, although I would strongly advise not trying to run Win 10 on them.
