i dunno how to start this but here's my ask about killer in love :D

chap 10: i finally see the guy! the guy that i think you meant? or is the one that's like "i can have anyone i want" type? i also saw arata and stalker dude. them going to disneyland after burying someone is giving me whiplash but in a good way?/pos and i finally saw the scenes of kokoa smilling and saying "don't die." and the pic of suzuki after just stabbing the stalker. i actually really adore the artstyle omg, i see what you mean by it's super pretty

and i noticed how like during the car sequence when suzuki asked if he could call her by name? in the first panel of her it showed her eyes as normally detailed, but then the next panel when she calls him by his name, it's suddenly detailed? i love this? it makes it so easy to get immersed? and it's giving kokoa a kind of eerie feeling around her lol if that makes sense, but suzuki is actually so expressive i like how it's different from the other characters:0

i'm getting somewhat attached to them (suzuki and kokoa) now and i'm very nervous lol, i don't even know how this'll end since i'm on the 'dude disturbs suzuki and kokoa in their table' scene at the start of chap 10, but yea i should probably continue now lol

yikes points for arata and stalker, but i already worry abt this dude oh no, and yep i'll continue reading now but gahh i really like how they managed to show suzuki's thoughts ngl, at the start showing why he joined a crowd like arata's and how he tried to change the way he presented himself/his image. it went from him accepting to be kokoa's fake boyfriend to something extremely out of the normal happening to him? the whole stabbing someone then the random people in the group taking photos and making him trend on twt, online harassment and it's all piled up on him now. things never went right before, and just when he was trying to be 'normal' it didn't work and his (presumably) tired of it all now, but even when he had the knife to his throat he was able to smile even a bit then as his about to plunge it, kokoa just- runs up to him (and i'm just noticing this now but did she block the knife with her hand? is that why there's a small scar there in the "don't die" scene?)

but aa, all the details like his eye-widening, the background tuning our during these shots and kokoa just so gorgeously detailed and smiling "Don't die. Let's live together." then suzuki tearing up?? i didn't expect this to be so gut-wrenching ;; i'm- really curious what she meant by saying "I'm the same as you, I'm worthless shit, I know that desire to die but I don't want you to die." i realize now we don't actually know much about her at this point other than her having a stalker, being somewhat off-putting (though that's probably just me reading into it too much?), her enjoying the same stuff as suzuki that got exposed as a 'nerd' at the table and that's about it? ig? i assume we'll find out more about her in the future chapters though.

the last scene with suzuki crying and saying about "The feeling of being hugged is incredible. i don't know if the "You're like a goddess." scene is part of the actual manga or if the site i'm reading it on inserted it in like an art piece or something? i'm assuming it's part of the story but ahh, the symbolism of this last scene is giving foreshadowing vibes sm but it shows their dynamic kinda well i'm assuming :') suzuki seeing kokoa like a goddess and him feeling like he was 'pardoned, and allowed to live'. i'm looking forward to how this dynamic grows though defintely, it's like suzuki is uhm- what's the word? putting her on a pedestal maybe? maybe 'looking at her as though she's his redemption/saving grace'? i suppose that would fit my current understanding of their dynamic though it might change i dunno, and yep i'll continue reading now lol

last bit- I FINALLY GOT TO THE LAST SCENE OF THE CHAPTER?? WOOHOO?? not really woohoo though, it's just the dude's ugly mug lol

chap 10.2: ohh, so so far suzuki's dealing with the random dudes that know kokoa, he asks about it but then she gets a bit upset so suzuki backpedals? i'm assuming it's meant to be off-putting since they purposefully mentioned about "why didn't she just block the stalker?" thing that suzuki though in the apartment scene. all the shots of them during the night with the sparkles of the attractions around them is so pretty in all honesty, suzuki's embarassed/flustered reactions are a bit cute to read lol/lh

chap 11: THE DUDE IS BACK :'(!! suzuki come backkk ;;!! this guy haS A KNIFE???

chap 12: is the reason kokoa had a melancholic expression when asking suzuki to never change because of this dude? i know his the 'bad guy' in this scenario but it's that sense where the writer is so good at writing that i actually understand? his entire life got upended whether kokoa meant to or not, even if she didn't mean to, the fact he suffered is valid though so the lien of "Damn, I wish I could kill them all." i dunno i just react to it as"yeah that's fair" if that made sense? i dunno, off handed tiny rant lol sorry

oh wow okay i finally scrolled down to the part where he did the thing to kokoa, major yikes ;; i'm both looking forward to/dreading how suzuki will react once he finds out the dude took kokoa, it was nice meeting flustered suzuki o7o7

chapter 13: they were probably such good friends??? why would you slap her??? he has an inferiority complex is that it-?/lh he has a warped perception of what 'loving' kokoa is like ;; WAIT HIS THE KILLER??? HUH?? oh wait so the black haired transfer student actually seemed pretty chill? though i assume his nonchalance just pissed off this dude more ;; suzuki's here :D

chapter 14: oh god his comments are disgusting, he earned that punch from suzuki lol the artist really did do such a good job on the art though, all the shading and shadows really helps to paint the scene ahh/gen/pos the "I'm gonna slaughter you." scene is so intense looking like actually, the persepective!! it's so good!!

suzuki: "No way, another phyco." meanwhile suzuki:

is kokoa some type of evil mastermind?? or is the story just misdirecting the reader's expectations?? the writing is so good i'm becoming just as confused as suzuki lmao, and oH!! they used the manga pages!! as the background for this scene with suzuki blacked out with only his widened eyes visible, the mood setting is actually unreal i love this/pos suzuki's definitely an unreliable narrator now that i realize lol but also it's his perspective so i can't say i fault him at all, but woah i like how suzuki's eyes get all fogged up in these intense moments, super cool detail

YEAAA, HE GOT HIT WITH THE GLASS! SUZUKI GOO! OH MY GOD HE AIMED FOR THE DUDE'S EYE??? the pained expressions are so starkly different compared to the usual expressions and i just love the intensity of all the frames<33 all the rough lines and wrinkles, the more stiff edges of the character really exemplifies it a lot :D

chap 15: this dude is really adding more weight to the suspiciousness of kokoa, i'm so confused on what to think and believe ahh i adore this level of writing that manages to cause this feeling in readers lol,really puts you in the shoes of suzuki. I WASN'T READY FOR THIS SCENE OF SUZUKI SLASHING THE DUDE'S THROAT??? THE ART AND EVERYTHING IS SO PRETTY!! i adore suzuki's blank-eyed expression sm lol

chap 16: now i can't help the feeling that kokoa is using suzuki ;; though i guess that would make sense in the genre and story so far? ah suzuki's conscience is getting to him now lol, oh yea blank-eyed suzuki is the normal now ig, he finally decided on his purpose now though somehow i feel like this is what kokoa wanted lol, idk complex stories always confuse me lmao

the shot of him saying "Thats my purpose in life." is so nicely drawn omg<3 i love all the details, it looks so clean yet so 'sketchy' at the same time if that makes sense. the expressions were so nice in this chapter ngl/pos

YEA!! KOKOA IS SMILING AND BLUSHING:D i don't know how these two are ending but kokoa really does look pretty. the art is so nice to look at and oh no the camera was recording them ;;

chap 17: kokoa being sneaky and i assume jealous is very amusing to watch lol/lh o7 riko chan

chap 18.1: oh okay that was an eye opener on kokoa lmao, so i'm assuming something happened or kokoa's always just been catering to other people and stuff like that? kokoa's reaction to "can you really be happy like that?" feels intense ngl, maybe it's cause the previous characters of focus have all been dudes who are interested in kokoa aside from that one girl friend of hers that warned suzuki im pretty sure, i like the character insights so far :D

will suzuki have to reject or harm riko :(? oh but his back to somewhat gentle expressions lol, maybe it was the nap or something. OH MY GOD THE KNIFE CAME OUT, THEY'LL HAVE TO KILL HER WON'T THEY?? TT oh wait his sweating while threatening her lol, there's finally some sign of hesitation ig?

WHY AM I INTERNALLY HURT SM TT riko got me attached oh no :'( the light was finally back in his eyes too ;; o7 and yep his losing himself (i'm at chapter 20 while writing this, how did i skip the chap indicators lol)

chap 21: oh my god that boyfriend is a douchebag wha the heck, IN HER HOME TOO???? all the scribbles over the pages to show suzuki suddenly 'realizing' was such a cool effect omg, i'm seeing a recurring theme of people saying to kokoa "- just because your somewhat cute." and other similar stuff like that, will her story involve something about her putting up a front or changing herself somehow?

oh yea, suzuki knows at this point lol, though ig he doesn't care anymore? or maybe he does, i'll see next chapter but i finally found the other scene you showed me :D that uh- "Okay then, why don't we kill that guy?" one with suzuki's smiling face lol, and yep his starting to lose it (i feel as though i've already said this)

chap 26: oh wait :( it's showing yuki and kokoa's trip to disneyland now, kokoa reacted exactly how suzuki did lmao. r they riding the same rides too? i don't remember the specifics of their rides ;;

chap 28: ... absolute whiplash ;; i- i love this?? it's made me feel things?? i've reached the scene from the prologue?? it's all coming together and i adore the connection they now share of 'not having anyone but each other'? i don't know how the actual ending will be like, but for no i'm really happy that they didn't make kokoa to be some type of 'in control, manipulator' type of character? she has her own motivations? she feels so human? i love how the writer was able to write this story so well that when suzuki was demanding an answer from kokoa of "whether to kill him or let him (her well ig exboyfriend?) live" and you could see she was at a loss for words, she didn't know what to say and suzuki was getting more frustrated? i, actually like the fact that kokoa leapt to protect yuki from suzuki? yuki was horrible and hurt her, took her for granted but yuki is confused but she loves yuki still?(i assume so at least) it's such a cool parallel to suzuki killing riko now that i think about it but just inversed?

riko loved suzuki sincerely and wanted to be with him, the "but i love __" moment was suzuki killing riko 'to not cause kokoa any trouble' (i don't know how to phrase this right but i hope the idea got across lol)

yuki 'loved' kokoa and literally breaks up with her, the "but i love __" moment was her literally running after suzuki, trying to stop him from killing yuki and even throwing herself at him

riko loved suzuki but suzuki loved kokoa more, kokoa loved yuki but yuki loved (idk fame? money? the name of that girl he was sleeping with that i forgot?)

i adore this bit a whole lot ngl, when kokoa proceeds to try and 'butter up' (for lack of a better term) suzuki, did she even believe herself? or was she trying to convince herself more than she was suzuki? and now they're both united again, under the "I'm the same. I have nobody but you." and- well i gues they don't really anymore do they? it's so much more different than their earlier dynamic, suzuki actually knows things about kokoa now. his seen her 'ugly', she's not just a 'random cute girl' anymore, maybe nor is she even just a 'goddess that pardoned me, that allowed me to live' since i'm pretty sure the spotless view he had of her is gone now. she's human, they know each other now. they're on the floor crying and hugging and goddamit i can feel myself tearing up too ;; /lh there's no more of that- idealizing suzuki had? is it bad i like this development a lot?

"You've finally noticed me. But that doesn't stop us crying. I can't help it and neither can you." has my heart on a platter, this made me feel too many feelings lol/gen/pos

chap 29: "I wish we had met sooner. If we had, neither of us would've been alone." why is this such a gut-wrenching line, why do i like that they're finally having a conversation ? i dunno, i know it's just been unfortunate circumstances that led them to each other but i can assume either of them would've cracked from their 'normal' eventually, but ahh the parallels again! at first it was suzuki who we knew the thoughts of and it was kokoa who seemed 'mysterious' and we didn't understand but now the roles have been reversed and now kokoa's the one asking "if suzuki will still be with her forever even if he doesn't like her anymore?"

oh my god suzuki pat kokoa in the same way or place on the head that yuki did, it is now i realize perhaps when kokoa first said for suzuki not change, she was referencing her bf lol kokoa's new haircut looks really pretty ngl though that's likely just the artstyle looking nice in general,

chap 32: i feel like i may have not explained it properly in my last few paragraphs lol, but ahh i suppose this is the bit where they actually have an actual honest conversation? seeing as the first time i mentioned 'they were having a conversation' it was pretty much just kokoa talking? suzuki wasn't as invested? i don't know how to phrase stuff ;;

his being honest, his finally properly realized instead of earlier where he was thinking "I won't let myself think.", there's no 'goddess', there are just two people. they're both coming to terms with it, that noit wasn't real. i'm scared of the next chapter but why do i feel like suzuki's maybe gonna turn himself in or something? maybe he'll still hold up his promise to make kokoa happy and maybe cover for her?

kokoa wants to believe but suzuki's already been in that position, he knows that won't make her happy. "Being loved by someone like me won't make you happy." i'm actually getting teary ;; "You'll be fine, even if you're alone." wow ok i didn't need my heart today i guess :melt_smile:

the introspection of suzuki while his on that ledge, the lack of backgrounds in the memory giving harsh contrast to the busy and filled background of when his looking down is genuinely so amazing, in the police car too, his so angry and it's understandable why, the art is beauitufl and perfectly captures everything. the shot of suzuki crying, screaming with snot dripping and saliva leaking from his mouth, just purely uncontrolled crying. the lines are harsh, intense and then there's the last shot with the barebones shading, soft colouring and melancholic expression and it all feels so fitting/gen

i'm getting whiplash from kokoa's backstory reveal and the ending of the story itself/lh i'm actually at a loss for words? i'm pretty sure the full story will properly register in my head in a few hours but as of now, i just loved everything? the beginning, the ending that i never saw coming from a mile away, all the characters, i realize i might be lacking in experiences to properly appreciate this story but for now, i can say i genuinely did love it all. thank you? for letting me be aware that this existed?/gen/lh

the culmination of kokoa's story: it explaining why she said "I'm a worthless shit.", why she goaded riko about "not making an effort" she parroted the sentence of "Did you really expect to be loved unconditionally?" and the fact that that parallels the message she received of basically saying "Don't look for love." or something like that, it's a bit blurry right now, and why she mentioned the prince metaphor, it shows her rejecting stalker dude and the "i have a nice nose" dude lol, it showed her family and how the way she coped with everything harming her reputation and following her till the end of the story (the being seen with older men thing her classmates were gossiping about), how changing herself seemed to work for a while but it was never enough for others, it wasn't enough for her. this whole story was tragic and i realize damned by the narrative from the beginning, it was always foreshadowing something ominous but- i can't say i regret reading this. it was a very fun experience and i thank you a lot for looking it so much, i ended up reading it too.

it's not really spoilers anymore for you to talk about why you related to suzuki, if you still wanted to chat about that, the art was just as gorgeous from the start till the end, i liked it all a lot.

okok first of all ive read through and i must say im so happy u liked it this is a big favorite of mine and i havent shown it to anyone really before (bcuz its kinda.... sad) but if u liked killer in love u should definitely check out boy's abyss its A LOT like killer in love... without the killing ive sat here typing out a response but honestly you hit a lot of feelings i had right on the nail.. and honestly you caught a LOT of stuff faster than i did- i only realized after a reread that the part where kokoa says "did you really expect to be loved unconditionally?" didnt click until i reread it- also you didnt dislike kokoa, which is really telling of you as a person when i read it, it was obvious the author was trying to make us think kokoa was the manipulator or something, and it just felt off the comments on it when i read were people hating on her and such and i always liked her (ill say something more indepth having to do with her in a second but i wanna finish this point first) im happy she was kinda just a victim and wasnt using him (though she sorta was- atleast not to the extent the manga couldve made her) its all just very genuine (ive been typing this for. an hour. and it is only one pragaraph long. im sorry if this is really short my brain is like .. mushy)

THAT SCENE. IS SO SWEET because it introduces the idea of them getting away from eachother. in that short time they knew eachother their relationship turned really codependant suzuki was literally killing all her problems- which to begin with was toxic, but now, shed reached a point of needing him, and as long as he lived he would need her too like a soldier and their country country needs soldier, soldier is dependant on country- its literally their home think koreans signing up to fight in war to aid japan (oppressors) during ww2 they couldnt LEAVE korea, and they were much too poor to feed themselves or family, so theyd join so their fsmily would get food from the military its a bit of an extremem comparison. but its not wrong :grin:

kokoas backstory singlehandedly explained why she was her, how she was her, excused her actions, and cleared up her character shes genuinely just unforfunate in every aspect which is just so heartbreaking cuz its litterally not her fault she tried, and failed, and tried again and failed and tried and failed again she just attracts weirdos i guess

my favorite part is when suzuki kills her boyfriend because, she *technically* instigated it, but he knew she didnt want the boy dead and suzuki, he just lost it by then hed killed riko already, and he now was done for no matter what hed either run away with kokoa or die or go to jail so for him to sacrificed so much for her, just for her to have someone she still loved other than him yeah i get where he came from killing the guy was. a bit much. but its understandable amd thats whats so great about this!!! theyre all so undoubtedly human its amazing...

the reason i like suzuki or related to him and whatnot was his relationship with kokoa im a- was a really obsessive person a while ago recently id say counting today as august its been a good 6-7 months that was honestly my rock bottom, and it was then that i read kimi ni koisuru satsujinki and when i got to when he killed riko and it was just kinda like. i would do that too and thats when it kinda clicked that i was kinda fucked at the time you can tell im being vague cuz i dont like to talk about it

aswell as the youre like a goddess scene it reminded me of how i felt about this one person. and how feeling like that kinda pushed them away from me, its just really eye-opening to see someone doing things you do, and recognizing it as a bad thing, then realizing that that in turn makes you a bad person aswell kokoa, kinda like. them. was viewed in a really uplifting way and they, or kokoa was just a human and they were flawed, and they had layers o them, and they werent just a shoulder to be leaned on and . suzuki (or me aswell) just failed to come to terms with that, and in the manga's case suzuki did eventually reach that, and let kokoa go but i was kinda like suzuki after he killed kokoa's boyfriend

completely deluded, not willing to face reality but (they) werent like kokoa in that sense, because they realized the. not goodness of the situation, and instead of staying (like kokoa did with suzuki out of fear) they just. left me which im glad they did honestly, cuz that was the healthiest option fot them

really fucked with me though, since it was just. sudden i had it coming though i was a real prick

anyway IM REALLY GLAD U LIKED IT i was scared u wouldnt really care for it so this was really heartwarming thanks custard or mikey

Never had one specific color, though I've definitely always preferred cooler colors. Used to love greens, but now indigoes, violets, and dark blues are more my style. Still love a good forest green though.

Honestly, I don't know. I think I give them in all of their forms, but as for receiving, I think affirmation is what does it for me. Might be physical contact though, I do love hugs.

Probably a drama, I did like How to Get Away With Murder, even if I only got through the first season and a bit. Designated Survivor was awesome too.

Spain, for one. I don't know what it is about the place, but it has a charm about it for me. Maybe it's the weather. Aside from that, Greece and Italy would be awesome. I'm a little bit of a mythology nerd, so seeing all of the temples and wonders built for these ancient gods sounds like an awesome experience. If I could choose more, Norway and Iceland are both incredibly beautiful places, and I do kind of prefer the cold. Also, I've always wanted to see the aurora borealis in person.

Ooph, this one is difficult. There are a lot of great scents out there. Vanilla's a long-standing favorite, I remember once bringing a bottle of it to school once to show to my friends. Cinnamon rolls smell delicious, as does that smell from the candles we always used to buy. It might've been sandalwood, but I've never been quite sure. Also, there's this one perfume my mom's worn for as long as I can remember - it's a little too sharp to be entirely pleasant, but it's flowery, and nostalgic for me.

"City of Angels" by Em Beihold. She also wrote the trending songs "Numb Little Bug" - the "Do you ever get a little bit tired of life" one - and dueted "Until I Found You" with Stephen Sanchez. I think her songs "Too Precious" and "12345" are also really good.

Stalker. But seriously, probably one of the places listed in #9, or back home, as I have some stuff to do there.

Vanilla. Most pure chocolate ice creams have a bad aftertaste.

Donuts. I don't know what it is about cake, but I've never seemed to like it all that much, even the good ones. It is, honestly, my least favorite dessert that I'll actually eat - I even like eclairs, which are literally just pastry around messy whipped cream that gets everywhere, more than cake. I particularly hate it with that weird gel writing on it. Just...urgh. Donuts are chill tho, and I'll never turn down a solid frosted with sprinkles or Boston Creme.

Black. It's reliable, doesn't stain easily, works well in formal outfits, doesn't show sweat stains, and works on most complexions. Also, I never really wear much color regardless. I would miss that one blue dress shirt I really like - it's comfy as hell.

Haven't read one in ages, despite my massive TBR, but off the top of my head, probably "With great power comes great need to take a nap," by Nico di Angelo from PJO, if only because of how ridiculous yet true it is.

If I can't handle myself In a fight, I'm not subjecting any of y'all to that.

Ice cream. It's more reliable and easily accessible for me, and frankly, cotton candy is too dry as a dessert.

A famous engineer, hopefully. Being an author would be cool, too.

I do not have pet peeves, I am a pet peeve.

Basic Bitch. I suck at fashion and aesthetics and currently have neither the desire nor the capability to improve. My wardrobe is composed entirely of thin shorts, tracksuit pants, and t-shirts, with a singular formal suit. Might try to start painting my nails soon, see how that goes.

As prideful as it may sound, my intelligence. I don't have much street sense, to say the least, but I have a good factual memory, am good at logic puzzles, and am a quick reader, and I'm rather proud of that.

Saturday. Nothing to occupy that day, nor the day after. It's excellent. My favorite weekday? Probably Thursday. Dunno why, it just vibes the best.

I am SUCH a bad night owl. I don't even know why, I always regret it in the mornings too. I guess it's just kinda freeing, not having the expectations.

Neither, hot chocolate reigns supreme.

the thing is like. some people absolutely are weird about homophobia and delight in saying slurs too much but not one time have i seen anyone call attention to it in a normal way. jender isn't homophobia it's genderweird young people talking about gender envy of a specific person. malewife isn't (generally) homophobia it's a JOKE about gender roles in relationship (a joke which is specifically about how those gender roles are stupid but fun to talk about) and is never used as a serious marker. fruity isn't usually homophobic it's queer people talking about other people engaging in queer behaviour and aesthetics; it is very much honourific and complimentary even when jokingly said as an insult. is it okay to feel uncomfortable with that vibe? yes! is there something to be said about how people engage with this type of casual homophobia? yes! is the way to go about this making posts describing 'she/they bisexuals' as a coherent identity group or claiming there are no queer men in fandom? no it isn't! you will never have a productive conversation by being passive aggressive

the main flaw most posts about this discussion have is absolutely vicious transphobia - mainly directed at transmasculine people - involving a bunch of really harmful assumptions. these people are deciding who they think is what gender based on what pronouns they list in their bio, something that will always be harmful no matter what. they say shit like 'she/they bisexuals' to mean 'afab nonbinary people' because they know they aren't allowed to be derogatory abt all nb ppl and 'he/she genderweird people' (both of these are actual examples from real posts lol). they constantly imply a hierarchy of cis gay men as the 'real' victims of homophobia and trans men as some unfortunate tangential group who don't really experience the effects of it. they talk about gay men as if none of us are in the room and then get angry when you disagree with them. they also tend to assume when they do know you're trans that you're not transitioned; that you don't really live as a man and don't know what it's like to experience the same homophobia as cis gay men.

every. single. post. i've seen about fandom homophobia is based in OLD old assumptions about the demographics of fanspaces - first and foremost there is an assumption that only women engage in it which is demonstrably not true. gay/bi cis men are FAR less likely to write fanfiction and generally much less likely to be on tumblr than other websites, yes - but this isn't because of the very recent tendency to use a certain kind of language, it's a holdover from the fact that tumblrs biggest userbase on the fandom side was always teen-college age women. there's an increasingly large trans demographic as people grow up and start exploring trans identity but a significant amnt of users in most circles have been here a long long time. cis gay/bi men are more typically found engaging in fandom on twitter, reddit, other blogging sites, and irl meetup groups. google 'scifi meetup (your closest city)' and you'll almost certainly find one. people tend to naturally drift where their peers are and the fact that our version of fandom - centred around art, fic, graphics, gifs, etc - was originated by women and perpetrated almost entirely by women means the demographic has always skewed heavily towards them. that's just how people work!

the idea that demographic unbalancing is caused by a trend that's less than six months old and laregly isolated to a handful of fandom circles is completely fucking insane. do i think the current use fo language might be stopping more gay men from newly joining right now? yeah! i think it could be alienating to some people. but the gay men who are already here and say they personally feel okay with most of it aren't being homophobic to you when they disagree with you lol. we're just experiencing and coping with life differently than you

So I’m not expert but this is how I think of character design! (also sry if you were asking about clothing/outfit design thats a little different)

under the cut because this is long im so sorry

So in my opinion there are three really important aspects for character design!

AESTHETIC: obviously everybody’s aesthetic is different, but this is more about what vibe the character has, what makes them THEM design wise.

INTENTION: who is the character supposed to be? this can range from their personality, their back story, their occupation, or their role in the story, but the design need to fit that intention.

COHESION: does the design go well together? or do certain aspects clash too much? obviously you can have disjointed parts of a character design, and if those serve a purpose then thats fine, but if its so disjointed its distracting from the character as a whole you might need to tweak things.

AESTHETIC: the contrasting part of the design (white flowers in dark hair, dark trim on dress, and dark shoes) provide interest to the eye. The mixing of round and sharp shapes also keeps the design from feeling “boring” even though its relatively simple.

INTENTION: so what role would this little doodle character have? according to her design elements, shes cute and friendly with her round shapes (bouncy balls, babies, etc), but could have a sharp/fast/active or even dangerous edge to her with the triangles (arrows, knives etc). of course the design doesn’t limit her possible roles. She could be a bubbly younger sister who teases the older protagonist, or maybe she’s the villain hiding in plain sight. the shape this character design doesn’t really have is squares(think bricks and rocks), which communicates that she might not be really strong, steady, or reliable.

COHESION: repeating the curves across her whole design builds cohesion, it communicates that “yes, these are all part of the same character”, it also allows the eye to “rest” on a familiar shape or line.

NOW LETS LOOK AT SOME DESIGNS

(Boku no Hero Academia) so both of these characters are super heroes, but have vastly different design elements. so lets analyze them.

OCHAKO(the pink one) is all rounds, with a few pointed shapes in hair mostly, but a little on her costume as well. Her personality is cute, bubbly, and friendly which perfectly suits her soft and bouncy design. Howevre she also has a very slight edge to her, which is seen her determination and drive to improve herself over the course of the anime.

KIRISHIMA(the red one) at first glance, seems to be super pointy!! shapes that are usually seen on villains or really dangerous characters, but while he IS sharp(literally sometimes) and sometimes aggressive, he is also made of squares, which perfectly suits his loyal “i gotchu bro” attitude towards most of the other characters in the anime.

ISSUE AREAS: so the only problems i have with Ochako and Kirishima’s designs is that their costumes each have one area that clashes a little too much for my taste. With Ochako, the belt over the color blocking stripes down her crotch are......questionable taste wise. I think the design would be better if the pink chest ended above the belt in a shallow v. not only would this mirror the triangle aspects of her hair, it would fit the belt outline, and continue the trend her costume has of being “grounded” or “heavy”. Kirishima has those.... gears??? around his shoulders??? and while the gear teeth are technically squares, the gear shape itself is a circle, which is a shape that isn’t present anywhere else in his design. I think changing the gears to something similar to his boots or his mask/headgear would create a more cohesive design(also the gears just look hard to move in)

These two characters are presented as individuals so their costumes don’t have to match at all even though they are still seen as “connected” because of the art style for the face, hair, and body.

In a group giving the outfits cohesive motifs is an easy way to present a strong team image! In Yuki Yuna is a Hero, the girls all have colored lines(usually princess seam placement), armor or fabric hip accents, covered arms, and similar flower shapes in their hair. The Aesthetic of each girl is strong in a monochrome signature color, but not over whelming as the black+white connects them even in color so they aren’t out of place.

Speaking of color! if your characters are all similar looking (like same body for all of them) you can communicate their personality and aesthetic just with color! (only gonna talk about a few of the ponies) Pinkie Pie (the really pink one) is energetic and playful, so her color scheme is a variation of the primary colors(happy, child like), and have one of the more saturated colors(high energy, intense) of these characters in a large quantity. Apple Jack (the orange one) is a down to earth farm girl, and her color palette is accordingly, mostly earth tones, its also warm analogous colors, which makes her appear un-complicated and warm personality wise. the pop of red is a nice touch to add interest, but notice that its uses sparingly in her cutie mark and tail accessory. Rarity on the other hand is elegant and fussy, her high contrast scheme of white and dark blue/purples gives her more visual interest and is something that makes her appear more “complex” in addition to the gradient thats included in her hair. the colors are also all cool colors, bringing to mind cool glass or water which both have connotations of grace and beauty.

however all the characters here are unified by their colors being on the pastel side, which is also important for a cohesive cast.

another, short, note on color; making the color/line/shading of your figure different from the background can help them stand out, this is used ESPECIALLY in children’s media, but can be applied to any illustration or animation as needed.

Color can also help your characters “read” quickly on screen, the powerpuff girls are a prime example, of having a distinct color blocking and silhouette. even the color blobs at the top and my crappy hand silhouettes STILL read as the characters despite being broken down into abstract elements. I also really enjoy the thick outline in the powerpuff girls, it really makes the characters pop to the foreground even though they have pretty simple designs and are often in a colorful setting.

Also, for a lot of animation, silhouette is INCREDIBLY important for your characters, some designers sketch silhouettes and then design the particulars its so important to nail the shape. These examples from Coraline are some of my favorites (though Laika wins in my heart every time no matter what lmao) because the simple shapes are SO CLEAR and indicative of the character, you literally don’t need to have watched the movie to know these are each different characters with different personalities and roles.

silhouette can also help tell the story. In Kubo and the two strings (another Laika film) the above three characters are sisters. One has chosen to leave her home in the heavens to live on earth, and the other two stay in their roles as “heavenly” warriors. This is even shown through their designs, the two sisters are weighted on top and their cloaks don’t even touch the ground, while the first woman has trailing, heavy sleeves, hair, and robes all grounding her and emphasizing her connection with the earth.

another example of shape/silhouette reflecting the story, In The Croods, the family of cavemen are for the most part very top heavy, with large torsos and arms, usually in a more hunched over position, while the newcomer, Guy, is bottom heavy with thin arms and stands more upright. In the plot, the family represents the old ways, the strength and rules that have helped them survive, they look like very stereotypical “cavemen”, while Guy resembles the modern man, and appropriately is associated with new ideas and forward thinking.

MORE SHAPES, in DC super hero girls each girl has a distinct personality emulated by her shape language. Zatana is dramatic curves and edges, Super girl is hard, straight edges against curves, giving her a solid muscular shape. Wonder Woman, though also strong, is taller and leaner, lending to a confident leader type. Green Lantern is slim, her lines all flow into each other giving her a go with the flow look. Bumble Bee is, of course, tiny, but her boots and gauntlets add weight and strength to her otherwise small frame. Batgirl is lanky and has a lot of pointed style lines, reminding the viewer of a skinny cat (ironic what with cat woman i know) or weasel which mirrors her preferred “sneaky” crime fighting style. (also yes this was just an excuse for me to gush abt how much i love the dcshg designs shut up)

so in my opinion, Cartoon Saloon’s The Secret of Kells is PERFECT in aesthetic, intention, and cohesion. Kells focuses very strongly on creating silhouette WITHIN the larger figure shape via color and line, most of the characters pictured here have no neck, the one who does, Brendan, is the main character and the use of negative space that cuts into his shape is used to draw attention to him. Kells is also very strongly inspired by Medieval Illuminated manuscripts (namely, the book of kells lmao). The characters still manage to stand out against outrageously detailed backgrounds via their simple shapes and strong color blocking.

Aisling, a secondary but very important character, is not human, and has a totally different shape language from the rest of the characters. She is thin and pointy, while most of the others are round or square. Aisling also has the most negative space making up her silhouette, compare the triangles made by her arms and legs in the above picture to the figures in the first image where everybody’s body is self contained with no negative space. She is also very different color wise, very pale and cool colored, as opposed to the warm saturated colors of the human characters. (yes this was another excuse to gush abt one of my fave pieces of media deal with it)

name/nickname? mags! my favourite one atm is magatron

how did you get into rotbtd? saw some fanart on google images while i was perusing through the httyd fanart as a ten year old and never looked back. deviant art and youtue amvs became my vices after that.

what made you stay/come back? httyd 3 actually! even though it's my least favourite of the trilogy, it made me so nostalgic for rotbtd. also the content now is so much better than it used to be imo.

out of the four movies, which one is your favourite? httyd1 definitely. i think its the most well written and constructed (tangled is a close second) and the soundtrack is amazing. while i think brave and rotg aren't as narratively strong, they have the same heart and loveable characters as the other two. tbh, i thoroughly enjoy watching all of them

dreamworks dragons or rapunzel’s tangled adventure? i ADORED rob and dob and i used to watch it episode by episode on abc3, but i haven't gotten around to watching all of rtte yet. tbh...i don't like the characterisation in rtte very much, something just feels off about it. character and plot wise, i don't have anything against rapunzel's tangled adventure, but some of it gets boring and repetitive after a while. this is a long winded way of saying i prefer dreamwork's dragons, but just rob and dob ig.

which one do you prefer to be made a sequel of, brave or rise of the guardians? like @hobie-brown said, disney should not be trusted with merida or any of her family. that being said! a rotg sequel would be a dream come true!! there's so much lore and world building that needs to be explored!! i have so many questions. how did the other guardians die? they mentioned the groundhog, are there other spirits?? are there different ones from other cultures?? and obviously there's will joyce's series to take inspiration from as well. imo, a series would work better to explore everything. (also give me a pitch black redemption arc. i LIVE for the villain-turned-awkward-relative trope)

otp/brotp(s)? my otp is hiccstrid and i think eugene and rapunzel is one of disney's most solid romances so there's that. jarida!! my beloved!! tbh, i was indifferent to jarida until like three months ago but now i cannot stop thinking abt them. in terms of brotps? all of them. literally any. the best thing abt the rotbtd revival is the lack of ship wars and the realisation that all of them have wonderful and distinct chemistry between any other member of the group.

favourite characters? httyd and brave were my gateways into this fandom, so i guess hiccup and merida?? but i actively kin rapunzel and jack has so many unexplored character traits beyond Ice Themed Bad Boy That Pulls Pranks. idk man, don't make me pick.

favourite au(s)? BAND AU. OMG i LOVE BAND AUs. @risoris made an awesome band au and a fic to go with it and i think i cried when i saw it. some of my other favourites are: office aus, superhero aus or camp counsellors aus (which @ven-finn has drawn art for ;))

in general, i think old fandom lacked a lot of nuance when it came to the characters, especially when they were all together so im glad that's starting to change!

🌺😌🤟 Always happy to! Okay here’s just some General bnha Thoughts ™ Mostly Lov centric. You asked for them, and you said GUSH about them, so here’s. A Lot! :)

This isn’t a lov one but it’s really funny so I thought I’d put it out there:

-when bnha was first gaining traction on tumblr, it was all art of Tsuyu. I have no idea why. People were talking about the funky frog lesbian superhero anime. Maybe it was just the people I was following, maybe it was a general trend, but I LOVED her design!!! my fav color and frogs r super cute!!! And I already loved superhero media, so I was like. I’ll watch it. For Her. SO. FROPPY IS THE REASON I WATCHED/READ BNHA. I went in thinking she was the protag and I was sooo confused when Izuku was... tbh I still think it’d be more interesting if she was lmaooo aus where? ...seriously if anyone has good aus where this is the case send them LOL

-I don’t actually feel that bad abt what Shigaraki’s doing. I still feel bad for him. I’m this post. yes im an apologist. its not my fault hes sexy and has been running around shirtless. hes a lesbian icon like thor is. I want to touch his hair. hes never done anything wrong in his life. he could kill all might, deku, bakugo, whatever, I’d still be sayin this. I don’t feel bad for gt. like. was anyone genuinely attached to him? lmao

-well u know how spinner’s quirk is just sticking to things? We haven’t seen him use it in canon except like, (1) time iirc?? I think this is probably bc he’s embarrassed about it even in front of the league... I loooove the idea that he gets more comfortable with it around them :”) and also how shigaraki. um. does that falling asleep thing while standing up with his eyes open, canonly? Spinner upside down, stuck to the ceiling asleep bc heat rises and its Warmer Up There. (cold blooded thing like tsuyu?? come ON give him a big fuzzy coat and scarf...) and Shigaraki in the center of the room, slouched but still standing, eyes open and motionless. Theyre both sleeping. -Toga roller derby au. No deep thoughts I just think she’d be good at it.

-Toga 100% is a social butterfly and could befriend anyone if they didn’t just judge the fact she was trying to stab them smh :/ (ok but seriously anytime I see cute friendships with her n the other kids im like :) aw. I feel like her and Camie...would be good friends. Camie feels chill enough to be like ‘ok whatever thats totally fine I forgive you!!’ LMAO we love airheads here)

-HOW DID TOGA GET SO GOOD AT FIGHTING? We know she’s been on the run since middle school or so, but good enough to pin Deku down after he’s been formally trained at a ~hero school~ for a while? (she pinned him TWICE I think, once when his arms were messed up, but, the other time as Camie, so? AND THEN WAS ONE OF THE 100 PEOPLE TO GO THRU TO THE 2ND ROUND OF THAT? even tho she didn’t bc she had to leave) good enough to beat Aizawa in a fight and stab him? A professional hero and teacher for YEARS? Is that seriously just street training??? Can people acknowledge how amazing her combat skills and reflexes are??? More Toga appreciation when?? Also her backstory??? SO subversive and incredible, hate when people reduce her to just a ~typical anime yandere~ :/

-Tomura doing stuff with his hands/fingers to train his quirk!!! And to learn to be careful with it!! obv I’m a Big Fan of him playing piano to do this and video games are prob the canon answer, but like, guitar or any stringed instrument that requires Hands would work too. Or knitting/sewing? EMBROIDERING? ??? Please, let me give you the mental image of him knitting aggressively while mentally scheming, watching a twitch streamer or smth too while doing it. (Doing stuff with your hands is a great way to let your mind come up with creative stuff, that’s how I come up with writing/drawing ideas 70% of the time)

-Tomura actually PREFERS cutesty, relaxing games. I mean, he does fighting and bloody stuff irl, games are a way to relax...he’ll play shooters and gta type games with The Lads, but. on his own?? animal crossing. pokemon. kirby games. mario. zelda. BIG ZELDA FAN (not saying this bc I, personally, am biased, but,) slime rancher, stardew valley, funny simulator games... he really enjoys those :”) God forbid he has a kid bc they’re 100% getting named after a viddy game character unless someone can talk him out of it LOL. Toga and Tomura are that animal crossing /doom meme where she’d be asking for doom and him asking for animal crossing :”)

-Bits and pieces of Before are kinda stuck in Kurogiri’s brain, but like. mostly useless stuff the doctor didn’t care about removing. Like, types of clouds. So Tomura kinda picks up on stuff like that. He can just look at clouds and tell you what type they are because Kurogiri used to take him up to high places in the city and point them out to calm Tomura down from a panic attack when he was younger. He can tell you if the sky looks like it’ll rain with a 80% accuracy rate too.

-Kurogiri left food out for kitties in the alley beside the bar. They weren’t allowed in for Health Reasons (it IS a bar with sanitation standards!!) And Tomura really wouldn’t stop it or encourage it either way so long as Kurogiri did his job, but occasionally would stand outside with Kurogiri and just watch the kitties from a distance. If any approached he’d go back in (lowkey afraid he’d hurt them by touching them :( ) They kinda kept that between them tho, bc they both Know AFO is a big bag of dicks and no fun

-people have pointed out how similar aizawa and tomura look. this was 100% the intention. tomura has a hatecrush on him. THIS IS SO FUNNY AND HORRIBLY AWKWARD FOR KUROGIRI LMAO

-Sako??? Mr. Dramatic?? Opera fan. Drama kid. Like, obviously, but. Really. He is. I feel like he can speak a dozen languages. I also feel like he used to be an overachiever but got too ambitious. He was def some kind of leader at one point of a diff Group or something that fell apart. I LOVE how creative he is with his quirk and the magician theme??? incredible. I don’t show him enough love but I Love Clowns :o)

-I don’t care what their canon heights are. Spinner and Dabi? short kings. My height hcs are (tallest to shortest) Kurogiri, Twice, Sako (who also has heels on his boots and a tall hat, keep in mind), Tomura, Magne (Tomura and Magne are about the same height imo) Toga, Spinner, Dabi. LISTEN. Dabi has short energy. Sorry. it’s true tho

-This is a semi-popular hc I think bc I KNOW I’ve seen it before, but Dabi having Terrible Vision and needing glasses is so so good. (seriously, with burns THAT close to his eyeballs, how could he not?)

-he tries to be a tough loner coolguy. you’d think he’d smoke, but I hc his ‘weak constitution’ comes with weak lungs (esp from years of a flame quirk?? inhaling smoke over so much time is SO bad for you, most people who die in fires actually die of smoke inhalation...) so he’s got like, an inhaler, can’t smoke, actually gets carsick, needs glasses, overuses quirk to save friends constantly, likes napping, a little awkward and rude. Tomura put him in charge of the vanguard so he’s smart, and good with strategies too, like a nerd. this is the Dabi I wanna see, not the popular fandom version of him tbh also step on hawks one more time sir :”)

-I wish all the lov fics weren’t?? villain!deku like I said earlier, but also, chatfics? I have nothing against them but most of them are just a bombardment of Memes with NO PLOT!!! Listen. text/chatfics CAN have plot and be an interesting way to tell a story. I almost want to write one just to show what I mean...

I know I’ve said I like spinaraki and blackmagic, but I am a multishipper, so a few ships I don’t talk about that I like that involve the lov in some way:

-toga/any of the 1A girls??? or Camie??? super interesting. ALSO in the radio drama, bakugo’s voice actor said Toga was his favorite girl??? so?? bakugo/toga ?? I WANT TO SEE IT. but specifically my fav dynamic with her is when someone ELSE is the one to like her first, it’s what she deserves.

-Kurogiri/aizawa/mic?? any variety of that is also 👌🏻 I also kinda wanna see kurogiri/all might bc. Dads. COME ON. they bond over ‘well, I raised him, and you want to have a part in his life now?? ok. earn it. prove it. I’ll screen you first’ or something LMAO they’re both genuinely concerned for the boy, and SOOO biased. let them bond.

-WAIT WHERE IS THE MIC/COMPRESS CONTENT. THEYRE BOTH DRAMATIC. ENEMIES TO LOVERS?? HELLO??? SOMEONE?? ANYONE. rarepair hours

-giran/twice is cute. like he was hyping him up so much and so ready to go save him...

-dabi/magne where is the content. when. why not everywhere??? I’ve also seen magne/compress which was cute!! or twice/magne? they’re the big sibs of the lov...

-dabi/spinner?? come ON dabi could get over his learned biases and spend time with him and they could hold hands. I want them to.

-dabihawks. Obviously bc the Drama. yes even still, don’t @ me. (also, shigahawks, seen some REAL interesting fics with it tbh) or spinahawks?? adding hawks to a ship is like adding extra chili powder. makes it SPICY dramatic)

-nine/tomura don’t @ me once again. both kinda afo’s playthings, nine obviously was the test for tomura’s new upgrades...they both love their friends...That Scene in the Flower field </3 hmmm tragicships are fun.

-tomura/mirko. more enemies to lovers. big fan of her and bunnies. remember when he wore bunny ears in bnha smash. (ok its crack but. CUTE.)

-I’ve also seen shiganatsu and shigafuyu and I’m like. these are cute, but also Dabi’s reaction always makes me cry laugh. so good.

-MOST EVERYONE IN THE LOV IS LGBTQA+!!! heres my personal headcanons:

Toga: pan or bi (CANON BASICALLY)

Magne: transwoman (CANON BABEY) bi, leans towards men. (her crush on dabi in bnha smash... uwu content where)

Shuichi: gets sooooo flustered canonly, I think he’d go for the first person Who Hit On Him (I can see him being the target of those mean pranks where someone says ‘my friend likes you!!’ and the friend is like ‘eww!!’ :(((( ) he’s super hesitant for romance, lots of repressed stuff. gay but takes sooo long to realize it bc he thinks most women are conventionally pretty Aesthethically, feels obligated to Like Them, but has bad self esteem so never goes after them, then only likes (1) guy so hes like?? is this allowed?? is this allowed???? (HES LIKE. IN LOVE WITH SHIGARAKI)

Dabi: bi but rly hasn’t ever gotten to date anyone, so he’s actually more reserved about it and while he’ll tease, he absolutely is absent and kinda oblivious (again, I KNOWWWW bnha smash isnt canon, but. my god. when magne is hitting on him and he Just Doesnt Understand.) also hes ace

Tomura: doesn’t care. (just prob says ‘its whatever’) trans/nonbinary (i’M NOT PROJECTING, BUT. :’/) probably goes with like, the label queer if any but doesn’t care much for labels

Kurogiri: bi??? kind of??? SIGRID.

I. Sigrid means victory, it means beautiful, it means fair. To her parents, the name is an embodiment of her to the highest. Never mind the chagrin of her siblings, for in her mother’s and father’s eyes she can do no wrong. The role of the Carver poster child was worn in well, lapping up the praise and attention to the point where it was almost pitiful. Her siblings – a younger sister, an elder sister and brother – all hate her for it. It’s envy, plain and simple.

II. As a child she pulled the pigtails of her peers and as a teen, bullied them into submission through quietly passed secrets, all escaped with a bat of her eyelashes. The tactic hasn’t quite worked as an adult, but never mind; with time she’s become wiser. Had a sharp mind and cunning streak not gotten her so far, Sigrid’s features might’ve led her to become a supermodel. Sometimes, she’ll indulge herself in daydreams of what could have been.

III. Existing as if the planets orbit around her has had a negative effect on Sigrid’s relationships with her siblings, to say the least. If she’s being callous, it’s not above her to point out the fact that none of them have seemed to grow a backbone and speak against the idolisation their parents have had for Sigrid for as long as one in the family can remember. They’ve certainly ostracised her, from the subtler offhand comments at gatherings to outright cruel objectives, the others conspiring and threatening to take everything valuable to her (but not precious; almost everyone seems to know she cares more for money than sentiment) piece by piece.

IV. As a younger, more naïve girl she wished that life had progressed another way, that she wouldn’t have felt so estranged. The idea seems laughable now. Sigrid never returned home after her graduation from Gilchrist, a shiny Botany Bachelor tucked neatly under her forearm and a laboratory in Gothenburg to work at the moment she stepped off campus.

V. Her family has never been as stable as she would have liked. Whilst her mother has remained, her father claimed his stake to a portion of company earnings from their divorce to live comfortably on the coast of California. Sigrid contacts him occasionally, if only for a birthday or for Christmas. Apart from that she’s far closer to her mother, close enough to pull strings where she likes. If she could describe her greatest achievement to date – and be completely frank – it would have been the spectacular separation she’d orchestrated between her mother and recent step-father. She’d never warmed to him.

VI. Men went to war for Helen, so what might she be capable of? Sigrid has always enjoyed the feeling of having someone else wrapped around her little finger while she sits pretty, watching from afar. To control another is an art. Unhappy with her work - a mundane project that seems to go nowhere - to hearken the Gravedigger’s request might lead her to the kindred spirit she’s been seeking.

I JUST WATCHED THIS WITH THE OTHER ADMINS AND IT WAS DISAPPOINTING AF. THE MANGA VERSION IS AND WILL ALWAYS BE BETTER. the movie was gore but not gore enough. I don’t recommend it to any of you.

Hyperallergic: Collector Valeria Napoleone on the Need to Support Women Artists

LONDON — When London-based collector Valeria Napoleone started her collection in the mid 1990s, she resolved to acquire only works by women artists. Over the years, the collection has grown at a steady pace, covering a wide range of media, from pottery to video. Notably, Napoleone avoids blue-chip names, supporting artists at the beginning or in the middle of their careers, such as Lily van der Stokker, Ella Kruglyanskaya, and Ida Ekblad. The collector is also known for developing enduring relationships with those artists she supports.

Alongside her attempt to address gender inequality in art, Napoleone is an active patron of a number of arts organizations, including the ever resourceful Studio Voltaire, a nonprofit gallery based in south London. She’s also a member of New York University President’s Global Council and sits on the board of the Institute of Fine Arts in New York City.

For the first time in almost two decades, key works from Napoleone’s collection are accessible to the public in Going Public – The Napoleone Collection. First shown at Graves Gallery, Sheffield last year, the traveling exhibition features pieces by the likes of Monica Bonvicini, Tomma Abts, Shirin Neshat, and Mai-Thu Perret. In December, the show moved to Touchstones Rochdale, in Greater Manchester, where it is still currently installed.

I met with Napoleone to talk about her collection, gender equality in art, and the meaning of going public.

Francesco Dama: Let’s start with Going Public. Why did you decide to work on the project, and why now?

Valeria Napoleone: Private collections going public is a very sensitive subject. Collectors have always been loaning to institutions, but what is very different at the moment is the context. Quite a few incredible exhibition spaces are now closing due to cuts in public funding. So there is a sense of emergency and a need for creativity. It’s not just about loaning; it’s about collaboration.

What I’ve been doing at Sheffield and Rochdale came very spontaneously, like everything in my life. Both cities have communities that are quite deprived of contemporary art. They are not exposed to it, and I think it’s absurd. Art is not just for the art lovers; it can be appreciated at many different levels. So when [the museums] initially approached me with the idea of showing my collection, I instinctively said “yes.” That was the beginning of a lot of work and discussions.

FD: Did you work with the curators at the museums?

VN: Yes, we worked together, but the final decisions were mine. I selected the pieces, and we curated them in the space, with minor changes in the display between the two exhibitions. Touchstones Rochdale is much bigger, so we could accommodate bigger works. It was fascinating to curate pieces that I know well — that are part of my collection — outside the domesticity of my place.

FD: So the collector becomes the curator?

VN: Yes, you do the extra step because you want to make an impact. And you want to maximize this impact. When I started the selection process, looking at my inventory, thinking about the communities in Sheffield and then Rochdale, I didn’t want to alienate anybody. I wanted to open doors to contemporary art and to be connected with them, stirring conversations. So I selected works that could engage rather than put them off. Nothing too conceptual, nothing too dry. I selected works that reflect the way I collect, considering the span of time of my collection. I included pieces I bought in 1997 and some I acquired in the past three years, starting with Monica Bonvicini’s video “Hausfrau Swinging.”

FD: Your activity in the art world could be described as an effort to address gender inequality. However, I sometimes feel puzzled by some art events or exhibitions that promote themselves as supporting gender equality in art. I sometimes have the feeling that the artworks on display have been selected only because of the gender of their makers, rather than their quality. It’s like curators want to tick all the boxes of political correctness.

VN: These days museums and curators are not immune to being seduced by the market and trends. It is often that they do not take risks or follow their own visions. Women artists have been left behind for so long that to catch up and have prominent presence in museums takes visionary and courageous individuals, who are rare. Most often incredible women artists are represented not by the so-called “blue-chip” galleries, but by younger or mid-career gallerists who have a tough journey ahead and lots of work to do. They not only have to navigate the gender inequality and bias, but also market-driven choices on behalf of curators.

FD: How do you address this disparity? Can you give me a concrete example?

VN: As you know, I sit on the board of the Institute of Fine Arts in New York. In October of last year we relaunched the Great Hall Exhibitions, adding a special focus on the practice of women artists. What’s different from other, similar programs is that ours is based on two exhibitions a year only. This allows time to build up context around the show. The committee selects the artist, the students of the institute curate the exhibition and create work around the program: screenings, talks, discussions, performances.

FD: As with any cultural process, this will take time …

VN: Absolutely. It’s not going to happen in a generation. We have to navigate it carefully and give the right message. It’ll take time, but it’s also very exciting. We can be catalysts; we can inspire people to look in new directions.
