if i may play the devil's advocate for a moment -- it doesn't really bother me that most of the fan posting around disco elysium on this site is more focused on the emotional aspects of the game than the political ones. i mean, firstly, it's well-acknowledged that fanworks tend to fill the gaps of unexplored potential in the original work -- ie, envisioning darkness in lighthearted works, re-imagining dark works as lighthearted. a lot of the emotional or relational aspects of disco elysium are left ambiguous, abstract, or at the very least dependent upon player choice and interpretation. this renders them fertile ground for speculative art. by contrast, the game's political statements are, if you have the context to analyze them well, complete. there simply isn't much more to say.
beyond that, those political aspects are also leagues ahead of many other pieces of media in terms of their complexity, nuance, and real-world analysis. that's part of what makes the game so great, and i do think may fans understand that. but, to be honest, being capable of engaging with those aspects of the game (just glance at reddit, and you'll see that many fans don't even reach that level) does not mean that fans are capable of generating that level of work themselves. like, it's simply more mental work to come up with a piece of creative art/writing that expands upon the superb worldbuilding and commentary of DE than it is to write about harry and kim getting goopy nasty. people know how to do the latter because it is a commonly exercised muscle of fandom. the former is almost academic.
that doesn't mean people *shouldn't* engage with the political aspects of the game generatively/creatively. but also... like... maybe it's better this way. seriously, look at reddit, guys. the DE subreddit is full of people *attempting* to engage with the game politically, and the analysis they're putting out is hot steaming dookie. i lose brain cells every time im forced to read another take that earnestly assumes the game positions moralism as the Right and Good Choice for Revachol. on tumblr, analysis is generative, practiced through art/fanfiction... and if i had to see the type of shit i see on reddit on tumblr in the form of fanart, id kill us all.
so anyway, i dont think the fanwork hyperfocus on relationships/emotion indicates that people aren't properly understanding the political points of the game, but simply that those points are much harder for fans to process in a generative way. their underrepresentation in fanwork doesnt particularly indicate anything about the way people are actually receiving and understanding the themes of the game.
except for the people inexplicably clogging the tag with jean viquemare. they do not understand the game and will not see the light of heaven

EPIC THE MUSICAL ACT ONE SONGS RANKED BY ME
The first act is out and recency bias towards saga 5 has passed. let's go lesbians
20 - POLYPHEMUS
I would like to express that just because she is last she isn't bad, ok? The worst Epic song is better than your fave's entire discography, let's not get it twisted. That being said, Polyphemus is by far the weakest for me. It's just too slow, and like, of course it is, it's the build up for the plot defining moment of the show. It has to be slow to contrast with the explosion that will come right after. But it's soooo much and so not the vibe for me. Still love her tho
19 - LUCK RUNS OUT
Not gonna lie, this song is only this low because they changed the "We could be caught of guard" verse. It was SOOOOOOO much better than the melodic version, like, that was a giga downgrade it really upset me and my homegirls ngl
18 - WARRIOR OF THE MIND
Again, a queen, a trendsetter, a trailblazer, we love athena, but her songs in the beginning of the musical are kinda not my thing. Warrior of the mind sounds so weird to me in its saga, i struggle making it fit in my head.
17 - STORM
Wait, wait hear me out, hear me out! Don't shoot! It lacks flavor. It lacks a spice, it lacks something it. I really wasn't feeling it much in the tiktok teaser days of this one, and while the full release is good (again, there is no such thing as a bad epic song) storm left me wanting more, not in a too good of a way. It felt like there was something that needed to be there, a je ne sais quoi, idk
16 - SURVIVE
I think i might get doxxed for this list, but it is my truth. TBH we reached a point in which i have no qualms with the songs. Survive is definitely not bad but like, it gets outshone by literally everyone else in the list so it goes here.
15 - THERE ARE OTHER WAYS
Ooooooh boy. I hate that she is so low. I do, I really do. The second verse just doesn't do it for me as much as the first, and it sucks because the intro and the duet are a fucking masterclass.
14 - PUPPETEER
The numbers are treatcherous because, yes 14 is in the lower spectrum but like, we are already in No Skip territory. I didn't think I would like Puppeteer but the intro with Ody and Eurylochus is simply perfection. The feels, the almost love confession that was cut off, the wordplay is just INSANE, love her
13 - THE UNDERWORLD
What do I need to say about Underworld that wasn't already said in every corner of this website? Putting your IRL mom to play Anticlea is VILE, 10/10 fuck you jorge
12 - KEEP YOUR FRIENDS CLOSE
She was gagging me since tiktok. Perfection. Bonus points for being Penelope and Telemachus first appearances in the show (SHOW ME THE TWINK, JORGE). Also, "OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOODYSSEUS OF ITHACAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!"
11 - MY GOODBYE
I talked shit about athena's sons in warrior of the mind and I was about to put this in 16th place wtf, it didn't feel right so i did a re-listen and holy shit this song is phenomenal, omg THE JUST A MAN LINE? CINEMA
10 - OPEN ARMS
Steven Dookie, the man that you are. This song is so fucking good, holy shit. It's cute, and fun, It's everything. It encapsulates why the first quarter of a musical is always my favorite, because of all the setups, the motifs, the weapons it creates to shred our hearts
09 - REMEMBER THEM
She is perfection, she is serving pauleira, she is giving me everything I want. By far the best outro in the show, argue with your mothers.
08 - FULL SPEED AHEAD
The harmonies, the character intros, the simplicity, the naïveté, the HARMONIES, YES, AGAIN THE HARMONIES. Troy saga best saga, and if you disagree you can eat my ass
07 - DONE FOR
This song is what truly hooked into epic so Just a Man could reel me in. The drama, the irony, the implicit horniness, the fact that i found out they were dating IRL around the time this was announced, truly divine (ha)
06 - NO LONGER YOU
Wig? Snatched. This was my favorite song for a while, I even auditioned for it lmao. Deffo my favorite one to sing, still. Mason DEVOURED this track, and the prophecy? Odysseus's scream? Setting up Monster, AKA one of the best things in this show? Gagged me, your honor.
05 - THE HORSE AND THE INFANT
We are reaching greatness here you guys. The duet with Zeus gives me chills every time. I just know this + Just a Man as INTROS (REALLY LIKE, THIS IS THE INTRO) are gonna make pussies throb and ppl cry in the theater
04 - WOULDN'T YOU LIKE
Hermes is my favorite character in the show, and this (and Dangerous) are my most anticipated songs EVER. The tiktok snippets really did it for me.
03 - MONSTER
I mean, come on. Do I even have to say anything? When he quoted Poseidon. The venting about all he lost, THE CONFIRMATION THAT HE DID, IN FACT, KILLED THE BABY. HE BECOMING THE MAN TIRESIAS SAW IN HIS PROPHECY. I MEAN, COME ON
02 - RUTHLESSNESS
Chills. Literal chills. When this song dropped I was INSUFFERABLE. Ask anyone close to me. She was on repeat for WEEKS. Steven Rodriguez's voice is so fucking insane, so fucking SEXY (I ain't afraid to say it bitch, that man can get it). But like, Poseidon as a character, Odysseus being an idiot, "Ruthlessness is mercy upon ourselves" like HOLY SHIT. And now, all i can think about is how Get in The Water will sound in his voice. Just thinking about it gives me chills. I just know he is going to devour it.
01 - JUST A MAN
Remarkable, showstopping, absolutely the best song ever made. The lyricism, the production, the poetry, vocal performance, I really don't have much to say because it's not needed. All of my favorite moments in this soundtrack, unreleased songs included, are moments in which this song is referenced.
The "Monster" chants in The Underworld and in Monster, "after all you're just a man" in My Goodbye, the entire song of "Monster" is he becoming the Monster he is asking about in this song, like, DO YOU GUYS UNDERSTAND HOW MUCH I LOVE THIS SONG? My life's dream is to go to broadway once to see this fucking song live, and i know it will be life changing. Just a Man is the most beautiful thing ever.

I Was (Sort Of) Wrong About Green Day
Pop-punk band Green Day has been a thorn in my side for the past decade, but that’s mainly because I’ve tried a few different times to get into them with no avail. I didn’t listen to classic albums like Dookie or American Idiot as a kid, as when most people in their late 20s to late 30s did, but they passed me by. I got into MCR, Paramore, and Fall Out Boy, but Green Day was a band that felt a bit before my time, although American Idiot was released in 2004, and I was also getting into Blink-182 a few years later, but I digress. Green Day has always been a band that I’ve respected more than I’ve liked, but something just never clicked for me. Maybe it was vocalist Billie Joe Armstrong’s whiny voice, maybe it was their lyrics that either tried too hard to be “political,” or their juvenile lyrics that were admittedly fun, but didn’t say anything I couldn’t get anywhere else.
I’ve also listened to a few of their other albums, such as 2016’d Revolution Radio, and that was a rather negative experience, although I’m sure the album may be better now in retrospect. That album showed me that they were out of ideas and running on autopilot, and I never listened to 2020’s Father Of All Motherfuckers, but I heard that album was so bad, the band only made it to leave their label. Sure, or they just made bad music, but saying they purposely made bad music makes them look better and justifies that to fans, but I digress.
That’s changed recently, at least somewhat, because like with my piece on U2 earlier this year, I can say that I was wrong about Green Day… Sort of. I’ve got a few caveats to that, but while I’m not a superfan of them, I’ve begun to appreciate them as of late. It all started with their newest album, Saviors, released in January of this past year. I don’t what propelled me to listen to that album, but I’ve wanted to get into Green Day for the longest time, at least understand what people see in them. Saviors, while not a perfect album, kind of achieved that for me. It’s a really fun, charming, catchy, and potent pop-punk / alternative album that boasts some good hooks, solid vocal performances from Billie Joe Armstrong, but I was really surprised by it.
It made me reevaluate this band, but Saviors is the best thing they’ve done in years, so it made me want to go back to their biggest two albums — 1994’s Dookie and 2004’s American Idiot. Those two albums celebrate big anniversaries this year, and in retrospect, they’re worth celebrating and talking about. Both of these albums are very different, but they’re albums that showcase this band in two different places in their career. I wanted to look at these albums again in a new light and re-examine them, so to speak. Maybe my thoughts would be different these days, or I can appreciate these two beloved albums in a new way.
Dookie, the band’s breakthrough album from 1994, is considered to be a classic pop-punk album, and for good reason. Billie Joe’s vocals are snotty and sneering, but in a really fun way, the lyrics are about things that a young adult would have experienced in 1994 (and even today to an extent), but the instrumentation is a solid mix between aggressive punk and poppy melodies that brought back pop-punk to the mainstream. I wouldn’t say the album is one of my favorites of all time, but I really enjoy it now. It’s basic pop-punk, but it’s a really fun, energetic, and nostalgic album that takes me back to a time when I was too young to even remember it.
American Idiot, however, is considered to be the band’s resurgence, especially when pop-punk was just starting to make its way into the mainstream. This album was also the band’s first post-9/11 album, and a couple of tracks, including the title track, subtly addressed the current state of politics in the United States. I never totally got into the album, kind of because it was too long for its own good. The album was a rock opera, which is cool in retrospect, but it felt a little heavy handed and cliched, both in terms of its story and lyrical content. The album wasn’t so much political, as it was about a main character that was trying to break away from the monotony of everyday life and the hellscape of the world in 2004. It felt a tad pretentious at times, basically acting like the album was saying things extremely profound, although nothing it said was new or innovative.
On top of listening to Dookie and American Idiot, I also went and listened to a couple of Billie Joe Armstrong’s side projects, including Foxboro Hot Tubs, and The Longshot. In the title of this piece, I say I was sort of wrong about Green Day, and here’s the real meat of this piece — I’ve found that I like Billie Joe’s side projects more than Green Day itself. Both of those bands, while being side projects, show something that a lot of Green Day albums I’ve heard don’t have — fun. Dookie is a lot of fun, but American Idiot and a lot of the other albums I’ve heard feel like a job on their end and a chore on my end; it’s clear they’re not having fun, and that they’re just after a check.
Maybe it’s because Billie Joe can let loose, and do whatever he wants, but with Foxboro Hot Tubs and their one and only album from 2008, Stop Drop And Roll, he can show some other influences, too, such as 60s psych-rock, garage-rock, and even some proto-punk. The Longshot, however, is more 70s punk and power pop, and their one and only album from 2018, Love Is For Losers, is a wonderful little album. It’s catchy, fun, loose, and straightforward, which is everything that the last handful of Green Day albums weren’t.
Saviors, however, changed that, because I was surprised at how fun the band sounded, as maybe they needed to go independent to release something solid again (although it’s still licensed to Reprise, their longtime label, so I don’t know if they dropped their last album to get out of their contract. Saviors is the best album they’ve put out in 20 years, because if you look at the stuff they’ve done, it’s not good. They had that bad trilogy album in 2012, and while Rev Rad was “better,” it wasn’t anything special, but Saviors is the first time a lot of people are realizing that Green Day is actually good, and they can still be good, not necessarily a legacy band (not unlike that of a lot of their peers). I don’t know what their future holds, but if Saviors is any indication, they’ve got a handful more albums under their belt before they call it quits.

the green day concert last night was absolutely everything i wanted it to be. i went with 3 childhood friends, the core group who got terrifyingly obsessed with them in 7th-8th grade in the way that only 13-year-old girls can. and it was pretty much perfect. (long reflection/ramble below the cut)
the band played all of dookie (30th anniversary) and american idiot (20th anniversary, fucking how. that album came out a few months after we all got into green day and now it's two decades old??) and a handful of songs from other albums.
the show went on for 3 hours and it was so satisfying and exhausting that i was actually ok when it ended instead of disappointed like i was at the mcr show (though of course i also would've been perfectly happy if it had gone another hour). it was a blur of singing and dancing and moments of re-realizing that this was actually happening. i was actually grateful there were a handful of newer songs i don't know as well so i could step back and just observe and soak it all in again.
the weather forecast had been very concerning, up until late morning it had showed that there would be thunderstorms until at least 6pm and that it would be pretty much constantly raining the whole time. my friend who's hosting ordered ponchos for all of us. but it ended up almost entirely dry (if cloudy, which. not a bad thing).
during the dookie set it actually did rain for several songs, but it was mostly a heavy mist? so it was basically just enough to be memorable, fun, refreshing, and then just as i was starting to regret not throwing on my poncho it stopped. and prompted a 'philly, you made me wet' from billie joe which. sometimes low-hanging fruit is the best kind.
the band's energy was fantastic. mike was running around, billie joe did a lot of the freddie mercury style 'eyy-ohs' and revving the crowd. he is such a Performer, it genuinely seemed like he was having so much fun and getting into the Very Dramatic Faces. tre came out in a fluffy jaguar-print bathrobe to perform 'all by myself' (sidebar i was wondering the whole rest of the album if they'd include the hidden track and got way too excited that they did) and was doing the hammiest 'who, me?' striptease. their little solo moments throughout the show really showed off how good they are at what they do, even when the composition is relatively simple.
the crowd was singing and dancing through all of it and i actually ended up headbanging at one point, but i couldn't tell you which song. also my knee is sore, but i expected something to be sore after that.
they had a goofy little 'bad year' blimp balloon walk around the floor (did i mention my friend scored us floor tickets??) during sassafrass roots. phone lights came out in force for give me novocaine (not as sure why this one) and a lot of people put them up for a 'tribute to loved ones' version for wake me up when september ends, which yes did make me teary.
they also invited their first opener, the linda lindas, to play a song. apparently their set was canceled (presumably because storm forecast? i'm not sure). and wow they were very good and i'm definitely chasing down all their stuff. it was cool too because while i'm sure it sucks that their set got canceled, they ended up playing for a packed stadium instead of whoever showed up early or specifically to see them.
one of the things i love about going to shows for groups that have been around for awhile is the age range of the crowd. at this show, at the mcr show, at the backstreet boys show my bff and i went to in 2011, you get middle aged fans who were full adults when the band started, plenty of people our age who were kids or teens when they took off (or in green day's case continued apace i guess), and kids who are just getting into them now. it's just really really cool.
whatsername is always bittersweet for me, so it was even moreso last night. it reminds me of the girl who i had the disastrous homoerotic friendship with, because she was part of this little circle too. one could argue from a certain light that she was the ringleader of the levels of obsession we got to. and the nature of the falling out and then later drama in our early 20s with my bff means she wasn't there with us. and the bff situation means i don't want to mention it to her, because that girl caused her a lot of pain. but that song did make me cry a little, just a moment to grieve the fact that if things had been different (and frankly, if i'd made some different choices when i was 15) she would've been there with us too. it was maybe the only thing about the night that wasn't as close to perfect as one could expect, that weird hole that we've all quietly healed around but is sometimes still very present.
anyway i'm glad they didn't end the show on whatsername. (they played bobby sox off their new album and then good riddance, which was our class song at sixth grade 'graduation' and kicked off all of this). and then we sat down until they kicked us out so the crowd could thin out a little, and took the septa back, and on the walk to my friend's house some guys porch-sitting across the street asked us if we'd been at the green day concert and cheered when we said yes.
#these are the things i could pull out of the blur#it was so much fun#i'm so tired and so happy#shara talks

bc i'm wild 🤪 i've re-added a bunch of spooky dooky muses that i had a few yrs ago apart of a small group but never got any love #rip dfkjghdfg . anyway . . . my babies , introducing decrypted 2.0 ⸻ a small crew of filmmakers / documentarians that go to explore the unknown with all the repercussions .
triggers : death mention within blurb , general horror / paranormal themes for future threads , musings , etc .
if ur interested . . . maybe like for a wee starter ? 🤲🏼
established in 2016 , decrypted started as a youtube channel with film students that had a knack for editing , the paranormal and adventure all in the same . within the fall of 2017 , an unedited , raw cut near 2.5 hour video was uploaded to their channel ⸻ where at this point , had garnered near 1 million subscribers ⸻ of a paranormal happening , which included the death of all members , except the original camera operator who somehow managed to escape unscathed . some would call it fake , a challenge of editing & talent that they'd become known for , but after a three year hiatus , it's safe to say that it wasn't fake . now , the group is back producing videos with a whole new crew , minus stevie , who still operates the camera for their quick wit and remarks that the 'fans' love , but they don't . rebranded as decrypted 2.0 as if to catch no correlation or confusion to original group , but instead to pay hommage . either way , the entire group spend their days & nights in new locations , documentation and producing new content for a loyal cult following of fans .
stevie campetto . twenty5 , bisexual , they/them . sophie thatcher . the only remaining member of the original crew , doesn't speak of anything that happened to them but tries to keep it up for the camera in comparison to off . hates their own job , but feels as if they're the backbone to keeping things alive ⸻ no pun intended . was originally weary about joining , but ever present in the act of persuasion .
jia chen . twenty2 , lesbian , she/her . lukita maxwell . sound operator and the baby of the group , her older brother was apart of the original group and she wants to keep his legacy / memory alive . recruited by stevie as a sort of last minute decision and somewhat of a plea , as she was the only one available at the time . become a staple , but majority of adventures keep her up at night , no matter how much she wants to say otherwise .
castor . twenty7 , gay , he/they . harris dickinson . close to no information is known about him , in fact not even their first name ⸻ of course , unless to the rest of the group . goes by his last , honestly doesn't want to be perceived so that's why he works as a silent secondary camera . a door mouse , but a bit of an enigma .
bryn low . thirty , bisexual , she/her . jessica henwick . researcher , has a talent for finding the absolute gritty . driven through money and success , a hard knock disbelief system behind her that makes it almost impossible for her to get scared . unfortunately a bit of an asshole .
emmett tyrell . twenty6 , bisexual , he/him . brian altemus . cocky little shit , camera hogger and all round attention seeker . one of two self proclaimed hosts , even if he wishes it was a solo show . fans , subscribers and followers love him for the charm and humour that runs naturally , has a great talent for bullshitting which works well for his job ( or not ) .
soren ambrose . twenty5 , bisexual , she/they . hunter schafer . was the one who got the group back together , even if she doesn't want to take the credit for it . extremely passionate and dedicated host alongside emmett , face on camera more than others and it tells . wants the camera to keep rolling no matter what happens , even if it affects her the most .

Poisoned Lipgloss is on hiatus indefinitely.
I don’t know exactly how to explain this but I am a college student who intends to become an author one day. I’m 20. I don’t have too much time on my hand between working with River on content and being there for Libby and Clint and their wedding and all…
I may still put the demos up on Spotify at some point + the still unreleased “now or never”. If I do, I will still rerecord the others but they will still be like, the level of quality you hear on the Dookie demos. I tried to learn the Macbook version of GarageBand but it’s hell. I prefer to stick with what I know.
So unfortunately “heart” may never drop, but we’ll see. This was incredibly ambitious of me and as a college student, this may have proven to be too much, especially since I am easily burnt out, already procrastinating writing and even extremely mundane tasks and am suffering from what appears to be undiagnosed insomnia.
Either way, I love you all. Take care. As for me… I’m still just as punk as I’ve always been.
P.S. Plans for re-recorded “toujours mon coeur” would feature it in a different key (as I am not entirely happy with how I put the original version in the same key as “back for you”), a new bridge and it being played on an unplugged electric guitar. I can’t play an acoustic guitar. It’s just too difficult for me.
@dustydahorse if anything I will record “toujours” again for you even though you’re done with Qcard I still see it as a tribute to you and the amazing human you are

Ok, babe, gonna try to do this without spoilers. But here we go:
The normies have really been freaking out about this one and like...it's not anything to freak out about re: the psychosexual stuff. Like, it's not as wild as they seem to think it is.
But that doesn't stop it from being a really good time!!! I had so much fucking fun watching this movie from, like, 15 minutes onward. The only thing that made the first 15 minutes difficult for me to watch was the realism of it--Oliver is so painfully an outsider that it physically hurts to watch.
Speaking of, there are few things that make me experience secondhand embarrassment or really make me squirm uncomfortably. But those things do exist and they're both in this movie and no one warned me because everyone who has never been on AO3 was too busy talking about the bathtub scene: social isolation at school and wrong side of the tracks fish out of water syndrome. This movie has both in spades for the first, like, 45 minutes.
And as I said, the writing and acting are so good and realistic that it was downright painful. Which is great--that's what they were going for and they nailed it. It was just difficult to know what I was heading into before hand because everyone was talking about other stuff.
Speaking of something that got overlooked in all the hype: I've yet to hear anyone talk about how wickedly funny this film is?? It's a thriller for sure but the darkly comedic elements are they and they really shine.
It's set in '06 and the mid-naughts glitz and sleaze is so fucking perfect. There are some real throwbacks culture wise but it never distracts, just adds to the ambiance.
What else...Rosamund Pike is phenomenal, as per. Plays the perfect WASP. Fucking kills it. But then again, everyone is acting their asses off in this.
Everyone wants to talk about the 'shocking' scenes but I think my favorite (you'll know it when you watch it) is the lunch scene. The red one? Yeah. Incredible writing, incredible acting.
Cinematography? Beautiful. Soundtrack? Bumpin'. Sound was also great, I was very impressed by the fact that it was the first modern film I've watched in a long time that wasn't mixed like pure dookie garbage. The music was never too loud that you couldn't hear dialogue (unless explicitly by design), nor were any diegetic sounds treated like a freight train barrelling through your living room. Wardrobe also fucking smashed it. Set dec was on point.
My only gripe is that it was 2 hours long. I know that's how long movies are nowadays. It didn't stop me from needing to get up every 15-30 minutes to stretch my legs or smoke a cigarette. That being said, the movie is very character driven which I think is best for a two hour run time, as it allows tension to build and arcs to unfold, etc. So ultimately it's fine bc that's a me-specific gripe and the pacing was actually very good.
It's not groundbreaking cinema by any means but it's a tightly contained story that had me thoroughly entertained. 10/10 for a fun, fucked up little movie.
And @apoptoses if you watch it you gotta come yell at me about it because I cannot wait for someone I know to have seen it.

Dogs on Ice - "On a String" Hardcore Breakout USA, Volume 2 Song released in 1993. Compilation released in 1995. Punk Rock / Pop-Punk
Plays: 6.3K+ on Spotify // 800+ on YouTube
Got a nice, little, early 90s pop-punky gem for you all today from a somewhat forgotten band out of Tampa, Florida called Dogs on Ice. As a staple of their own local scene for sometime around half a decade, Dogs on Ice managed to get signed to San Francisco label Allied Recordings, which was run by a guy who did graphic design work for Dead Kennedys frontman Jello Biafra's Alternative Tentacles label. DoI would end up releasing a 7-inch EP and an album through Alliance before breaking up, which would then lead their frontman, Joe Popp, to pursue his own renaissance man career of sorts as…
a leader of other bands, including one with ex-members of Smash Mouth
a rock musical extraordinaire who'd get one of his own creations directed by the guy who did Rent
an owner of his own music gear shop, for which he would make gear himself
a co-star in a 1996 commercial for MLB on Fox with ex-New York Met, ex-Philadelphia Phillie, and current 100% certified douchenozzle, Lenny Dykstra, who sings one of the single-worst renditions of "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" that you've ever heard in your life
a winner of multiple awards for a web docuseries he did that saw him go on a fully-fledged cross-country tour to play music in 48 different states with his sole mode of transportation being nothing but a motorcycle
Whew! 🫨
So, anyway, for the time that they were around, it seems like Dogs on Ice were a pretty big deal in the Tampa area, which is probably why, of all bands that could've been chosen, they were given the big opportunity to open for Green Day back in 1993, right when Billie, Mike, and Tré were on the cusp of breaking out and re-defining pop-punk as we knew it themselves with Dookie. The venue for the show was a small bar and is said to have attracted about 40 people on average for a gig, but for that Green Day / Dogs on Ice billing, it's estimated that they drew ten times the normal amount of folks, and definitely broke occupancy laws, with it being so packed that people were forced to stand on the pool tables 😂.
And the year of that performance is when Dogs on Ice released their debut record too, a four-song EP called Housefly, which featured a track on it called "On a String."
Now, although some profiles list this group as being hardcore punk, and this very track itself kicks off a great comp called Hardcore Breakout USA Volume 2, "On a String" is really not a hardcore song in any way. It's just a pretty sweet and catchy bit of early 90s guitar-bass-and-drum trio pop-punk. Joe Popp—who I should note, literally has the word 'pop' in his own name!—leads the way on both guitar and vocals, with a lightly scratchy and sometimes gravelly street rasp that contrasts nicely with his much smoother and delightful floods of 80s-indie-jangly chords, which themselves get broken up by some sudden, punk-standard chops at times too.
So while doing research on this band and Joe Popp, specifically, I found a forum post of his where he said that he "was pop punk before they called it pop punk," and while I don't think that that's actually true at all, it still seems that he was pretty damn good at making it, because this song in particular really is a pretty top-notch bop when it comes to early 90s stuff.
Wasn't expecting to go down such an extensive rabbit hole today, but as it turns out, Joe Popp's led quite an interesting life for himself. And now you know a whole lot more about this hero of local 90s Tampa punk and one of his first bands too.

Not the same anon but re : HIMYM. My god. My god I could write a book on the horrid misogyny in this goddamn show. The waving away that Barney is a fucking rapist (rape by deception). The fact that lily went from aspiring artist to breeding housewife to marshal, who of course got to fulfill all of his dreams as a judge while she stays at home, unfulfilled. Ted who is the most boring mediocre man of all time yet expects his perfect little wife to be perfect in every way.
I could BARF anytime I think back on this show
It's actually fascinating to me re: Marshall/Lily that the writers seemed to lose interest in their drama and conflicts. I think one of the big reasons HIMYM was lauded in the first season and really gave it an oomph in the second was the fact that Lily leaves Marshall! It not something typically done in a sitcom, it was very compelling writing and it paralleled nicely with Ted/Robin's story (not only because they got together, but because we the audience know that Marshall and Lily are quote unquote soulmates, and Ted and Robin are not...at least at the time of writing it).
The story role of Marshall/Lily and Barney switch places at some point. The pathos of Barney's character truly doesn't matter in the first two and a half seasons. He's comic relief, he's player C for the B-plot. Very normal in a sitcom, you have five main players so you can pair two characters in the A plot (or the B plot sometimes), and the other 3 characters are doing the B-plot (or sometimes the A plot). One of the five tends to be, you know, the goof guy. He's not integral to the main over arching story, he comes in to be an imp and cause mischief and be a catalyst for some mayhem. Barney is clearly specifically written in that archetype from the very beginning. Now as sitcoms go on, these "fifth guys" do tend to have their role expanded and we will get more insight into the drama of their lives. They rarely get to be "promoted" as Barney did, even if they are a huge break-out character, like Barney was. Sometime the "fifth guy" is so break-out they become the main character, but that tends to make the sitcom very zany!! We're going to sea world! We're going to SPPPAAACE!!! etc. Barney wasn't made the lead, but his story was promoted. Marshall and Lily's dramas were then demoted.
This was a mistake, because Marshall and Lily were given a lot of story lines that weren't appropriate for Ted but fit into the theme of the show (the theme being "how are you still growing up in your 30s in the 2000s"). When should we have a family, what are our careers going to be, what have we lost by being each other's "only ones", did we choose New York, debt...these were interesting story beats for a sitcom.
I also have a conspiracy the writers were secretly torturing Jason Segel. They didn't actually care about Ted and Robin, they just wanted to make PG Saw Traps for Jason Segel. At some point the writers said "fuck our original vision, I personally want to make Jason Segel suffer." In season 8 they made him break the fourth wall (a thing they only did ONCE before to great effect) like six times already!!!! They want to kill that man!!! They wanted Jason Segel to die!!! They made Jason Segel show up to set at gun point and then gave him a doo doo garbage script on purpose!!!
Joking aside, yes it's atrocious they didn't use Marvin (the baby) as a jumping off point for Lily's career story. We had to spend time farting around about Barney getting a dog wing man (painfully unfunny) instead of spending some time with Lily's anxieties again (it's been well established and set up!!) that becoming a mother has put her that further out of reach of her art career. Again, haven't finished, but I don't think they really go back to this story beat.
only theory that makes sense is that they wanted Jason Segel to jump off a cliff and tried their hardest by making the most dookie hot garbage scripts they could think of.

Thoughts??
LOL okay, i was privately laughing about this yesterday, so i do have a couple of thoughts!!! I really enjoy Horikoshi’s in-joke that he has with himself, about being the Photographer? And with that Deku growing more comfortable with posing/doing it easily. That’s a really handy note to have for fic, especially where we’re writing about an older Deku who’d have more years of posing for magazine shoots and things under his belt. Same thing with the re-confirmed thing about Todo just placidly going along with whatever’s asked of him LMAO. Our people-pleasing Prince. 🥺 He’s such a good boy!!!
Jirou and Ochako are so cute. 🥺 i like Jirou’s shyness, i think it’s sweet that despite it she still agreed to dress up! And Ochako’s blissed out face with that mochi—she’s adorable lmaooo.
i really like the kimono Miruko is in!! the hair pin is so pretty. laughing at the idea of her pouting over losing her freedom of movement—i made a note on my regency fic thanks to that (that she’d find clothing in general pretty restrictive LOL rip Miruko girl soz). i’m also enjoying the all-black kimono Kacchan’s in, at the back there.
(i saw a tiktok going over the art, and the OP was like omg bakugou’s so distracted by deku! how cute! and i just need to know if bookiedookies have some kind of terminal condition where they can’t see kirishima? it must be like selective face-blindness or something LOL, because Bakugou is looking at someone.. and it’s not Dookie there LOOOL)
anyways, gentle bullying aside: can we talk about the elephant in the room? namely how Horikoshi’s thigh-agenda is on full display. 💀 He’s so funny LMAO. NO ONE WAS SPARED. 😭 Well, that’s a lie, two of them were: Miruko and Bakugou. But we see Hori’s thigh-agenda with Miruko all the time. 😌 If i were Hori I would simply never draw Bakugou in anything that could be weaponised against him lmfaoooo. No Bakuthighs for anyone!!!! You’re all too rude!!!!!!!!!
Speaking of rudeness tho—all the nutsack talk. 💀 my new headcanon is now that if Red Riot has to do a photoshoot in something fitted/skin-tight, someone has to either quietly remind him to adjust, or some poor photographer has to photoshop his ballsack out. 💀💀 you know what im glad Hori didn’t draw Bakugou in the same fit because I don’t need to know his headcanon for Bakugou’s balls! thanks! You can keep that one! thank-you!!
#ofmermaidstories-asks#stay alwaysssscurious: 🔍📝🌾#hori and his thigh agenda… lmfao#he’s just an un-quirked mineta and i love that for him 💕

surveys are fun, yo.
what cd have you forgotten about and then recently remembered you love so much? dookie by green day. even though it's a tape, not a cd.

what do you think is the best way to get a date? make the person you are crushing on a rad mix tape or CD. or give them a copy of yr zine.
who do you think would cry if they ever read your journal? my mom. some other people, too, maybe.
what is the cure for the summer time blues? trains, travel, tattoos, coffee, friends, zines.
whats the last cd you listened to? "my war" by black flag. but it was a record, not a cd.
give me a quote that will do me so good: i find that alcohol, in sufficient quantities, brings about all the effects of drunkenness. -oscar wilde
Full name: jessica ‘duckie’ disobedience
You reside: near chicago, soon to actually be IN chicago, thank fucking god.
What makes you human? i get inane crushes on "celebrity" boys and girls and then get papercuts when i tear their pictures out of fanzines. i smoke and i cough and my throat gets sore and fucked up when i scream too much which i do a lot. my heart breaks at the drop of a hat, but i always seem to sew it back up again, although maybe it doesn't work as well as it once did. i bleed. i sweat and smell and fuck. i get blisters on my toes from too-tight chucks and on my hands from writing and bass guitar and bike handles. i cry and my tears are salty.
What do you collect? stickers to put on my typewriter and car and bicycle and notebooks, patches to sew haphazardly onto hoodies, multi-colored shoelaces for my multi-colored chucks. tattoos. drawings of skulls; zines and books to read and re-read. CDs, mix tapes from friends and strangers, punk rock records. weird found religious propaganda like pamphlets on how to be saved and "i heart jesus" barrettes. leopard print stuff. blank books to fill up with rants and poetry and journal entries and my novel. cheap typewriters. pictures of punk rockers. photographs. sock monkeys. punk rock barbies. fabric scraps that may come in handy some day. pictures and fliers and posters for my walls. e-mail addresses.
How many issues of Cometbus do you own? not nearly as many as i would like to.
What annoys you most? close-minded people, dumb boys, mosquito bites, restlessness, boredom, sore throats, stomachaches, nic-fitting, being broke, apathy.
When you grow up, what do you want to be? really, doing a zine is the only long-term plan i have. i'd like to write and travel and meet lots of rad people and be in a band. i want to be happy. i want to be a mom someday.
Whats inside your attractive messenger bag? green zine #10, girl swirl #4, inside and out #s 1 & 2, the scorpio conspiracy #1, starlight #4, war against the idiots #19, lab rat #4, skin & ink july 2001, adbusters july/august 2001, packing tape for taping up posters, a black bandana, sunglasses, my keys on a jack kerouac keychain, halls ice blue throat lozenges, a tin of tattoo goo, two mix tapes, a blank book with a typewriter on the cover that i'm writing my novel in, a black felt tip pen, a little flashlight for dumpster-diving, a pack of sugarfree gum, million4roe stickers, a converse all-star pencil case with nothing in it, old breath mints covered in fuzz and tobacco, a receipt for piggly wiggly, some coins, a chicago metra train map, a notebook with random scribblings in it, political posters, a blank book with the british flag on it that has my poetry in it, a half-full pack of sampoerna clove cigarettes, a half-full pack of marlboro reds, empty packs of gpc lights and american spirit lights, a sanitary pad, a leopard print wallet (which contains: 7 dollars, a receipt for walgreens, my driver's license, my library card, a guitar pick, a pink plastic safety pin, a bottle cap that also happens to be an "ad" for free beer zine, two tiny pictures (one of a sock puppet and one of a chalk drawing), & my debit card), old el cards, an old shopping list, an empty coin purse, condoms, a blue felt tip pen, 3 lighters (blue, purple, yellow), tissues, an eyeliner pencil (black, of course), benadryl, my watch, an empty pack of birth control pills, eyedrops, hand cleanser, hand lotion, and lime chapstick.
Shamless About: singing loud in public, thrashing around in my car, public displays of affection, belching, swearing, my tattoos and piercings, armpit and leg hair, scars and bruises, liking girls.
Favorite summer activities: walking on the beach wearing all black and getting my feet wet but not actually swimming, traveling, walking around outside at night with friends either really drunk or really stoned and being really obnoxious, coffeeshops, punk rock shows where it's so hot you can hardly breathe, dumpster-diving, meeting cool people, eating ice cream, drinking lemonade, riding my bicycle, skateboarding, staying up late, catching fireflies and then letting them go, etc.
Favorite winter activities: freezing my ass off while trying to walk to the fireside bowl, freezing my ass off while waiting for the el, generally freezing my ass off, dressing inappropriately for the weather, drinking coffee or chai, making mix tapes, being nostalgic, writing long letters to friends, contemplating things, wearing sweaters, wishing it were summer, crying, having sex, cuddling, shoplifting, hanging out at the library, making snow angels, etc. What side of the Shit Split rocks harder? i'd have to vote for blatz, although filth is really rad.
Who would win a fight, Paul Westerberg or Elvis Costello? well fuck, neither one of them seems like fightin' guys. but i guess i’d say paul, just cuz he seems a little more unhinged.
If you are alone and no one is looking, how many weezer songs will it take to get you sobbing? half of "the sweater song." i'm weird.
Do you Rock the Casbah? yep. even if the sharif don't like it.
What's the biggest lie you ever told? let's see. . .my parents think i'm straight (even though i've tried to tell them otherwise), have no tattoos, have never had sex, don't smoke, don't drink, don't do drugs, and they don't know i'm an anarchist.
What is the meaning of life? zines, records, love & lust, adventure, sex, broken hearts, bass guitars, loud music, screaming, high-top chucks, crushes, henry rollins.
Honestly though. i don't hate myself. and that's all that matters.
[choice excerpts from some surveys I filled out and posted on my LiveJournal, 6/18/01]

Green Day “Demaster” ‘Dookie’
Green Day are releasing Dookie in fifteen … unusual … formats. The full press release is below. When an album hits a big milestone like its 30th anniversary, it gets the usual remasters on the usual formats. But Dookie isn't a usual album. That’s why Green Day and BRAIN collaborated to create DOOKIE DEMASTERED: the album that exploded the format of punk rock, re-exploded onto 15 obscure, obsolete, and otherwise inconvenient limited-edition formats, now available for purchase. Instead of smoothing out its edges and tweaking its dynamic ranges, this version of Dookie has been meticulously mangled to fit on formats with uncompromisingly low fidelity, from wax cylinders to answering machines to toothbrushes. The listening experience is unparalleled, sacrificing not only sonic quality, but also convenience, and occasionally entire verses. It’s Dookie, the way it was never meant to be heard. All 15 formats can be played at dookiedemastered.com. Enter the drawing for your chance to buy one. Drawing ends on Friday, October 11th at 8AM PT/11AM ET. DOOKIE DEMASTERED comes on the heels of Green Day’s massive sold-out Saviors Tour, which hit stadiums worldwide this summer. The band played Dookie and American Idiot in full, along with cuts from their latest album Saviors, and the tour received widespread critical praise. DEMASTERED FORMATS Burnout – Player Piano Roll Having A Blast – Floppy Disk Chump – Teddy Ruxpin Longview – Doorbell Welcome To Paradise – Game Boy Cartridge Pulling Teeth – Toothbrush Basket Case – Big Mouth Billy Bass She – HitClip Sassafras Roots – 8-track When I Come Around – Wax Cylinder Coming Clean – X-Ray Record Emenius Sleepus – Answering Machine In The End – MiniDisc F.O.D. – Fisher Price Record All By Myself – Music Box --- Please consider becoming a member so we can keep bringing you stories like this one. ◎ https://chorus.fm/news/green-day-demaster-dookie/

Y/n in this fic is so relatable cause even I'm like studying literature and this constant anxiety regarding your writing and your worldview is so djdjdndj. Thank you for this safe space and the hint of polyam you brought in was chef's kiss as a polyam person I genuinely feel so validated.
