── OLYMPICS MASTERLIST
[🌊] DISCIPLINE: SWIMMING
PAIRING: swimmer!mingyu x swimmer!fem reader GENRE: fluff, friends to lovers(ish), idiots that doesn't realise the other one is in love with them too, mingyu is a tease but also down bad WARNINGS: the reader gets hurt (hits her head, nothing too descriptive), mingyu is a hottie WORD COUNT: 3k
SYNOPSIS: what will it take for you and mingyu to finally understand that you're literally meant to be?
natalia's note: @wonijinjin the broad back and bulging biceps are for you
Tumblr media
“i can’t do this anymore.”
mingyu's words hit you like a speeding train.
you quickly lifted your head from where you were looking at your fingers splashing the water, facing your best friend.
“w-what?” you asked, horrified. “what do you mean?”
his shoulders dropped, causing the water to ripple around your bodies, and you couldn’t shake off the feeling that you wouldn’t like what he was about to say next.
“i can’t do this anymore. i can’t watch you lose again and again,” he sighed, and dived under the red lane line, emerging a second later right next to you. “it’s,” he took a breath, “heartbreaking.”
with how close he was to you now you didn’t have a choice but to look up, which was stupid because come on - you were in the water. a wole ass swimming pool. like, he could literally submerge himself a little bit more and you’d be eye level, but no. kim mingyu had to flash everyone in the damn room with his godly sculptured chest and shoulders.
you mentally scolded yourself for losing the last ounces of your dignity over a man, because why was it so hard for you to peel your eyes off his pecs? and a quiet voice inside your head was telling you that mingyu didn’t do this by accident - he knew how it affected you. but it shouldn’t. you were best friends after all.
and best friends didn’t look at each other’s chests. and wide shoulders. and bulging biceps.
“then stop being such a bitch, kim mingyu,” you cleared your throat, suddenly very interested in the purple “paris 2024” banners over his head. “if it’s breaking your heart then that’s your problem, not mine.”
mingyu rolled his eyes, and quickly lifted his hand to splash water at you, making you shriek. what a shame god didn’t bless you with quicker reflexes, so you could cover your eyes at least. it was funny how people used to tell your coach that it would be for the best to split your training sessions because you didn’t get on well with each other, while in reality you got on well a bit too much.
“uh, excuse moi?” you cringed at his horrible attempt to speak french, “you’re calling the three time world champion and two time olympic gold medalist a bitch?” he put his hand over his heart.
“then why don’t you want to race with me anymore?” you practically whined. “are you afraid of getting beaten by a girl? would that do damage to your reputation in the olympic village?” you giggled at his unamused stare. “i’m sure the gymnasts would be very disappointed to find out you’re not as big and strong as they thought,” you pouted at him, mockingly.
“i told you baby, i don’t want to see you lose again, simple as that” mingyu put his hand on your shoulder. “can’t you race against ava or liv?”
you weren’t sure if it was better to go underwater or to call for the medics at this point. this infuriatingly hot man just called you baby for god’s sake and he had his hand placed so close to your neck it felt as if he was cradling it. luckly you could blame the cold water for your shivering. the worst part - you were 99% sure you saw him make out with alexa before going to paris, so all of the sweet words and gentle touches were platonic.
they meant nothing.
which
were you even surprised? the hottest guy making out with the hottest girl on the team. both multiple champions. both insanely talented.
still, you wouldn’t give up, and that definitely wasn’t because of your delusions that you could pull the hottest and the best swimmer on the continent, but because you didn’t want to lose your best friend.
“you’re not fooling me, kim mingyu. i think you’re just scared of me beating you.”
he scoffed, and finally lowered himself into the water. thank heavens. “okay then. what do you say about one last race to finish this training off?” mingyu said, and sent you a challenging look, which he knew would rile you up even more.
“deal,” you shook his extended hand. “but don’t come crying to me when you lose.”
“as you wish, my queen,” he bowed his head, and snickered. “but-,”
“no buts,” you cut him off.
“ah, ah,” he pointed a finger at you. “if you lose you have to take a bath in the seine.”
sometimes you wondered why exactly you had a crush on him because stuff like these reminded you he was only a man. more like a man-child, but that was if you wanted to be nitpicky.
“that’s illegal, you moron.”
you swore you’d drown him one of these days.
with the goggles over your eyes you swam under the lane line to have a whole lane for yourself, because there was no way you’d fit in one lane with mingyu.
“okay champ, let’s see-,” suddenly you felt a tap on your shoulder.
“je suis dĂ©solĂ©, mais tu dois sortir de l'eau. les prĂ©paratifs pour la course vont bientĂŽt commencer,” one of the volunteers was crouching by the edge of the pool with his hand outstretched in your direction.
“uh,” you shot mingyu a quick look, “i’m sorry, je ne comprends pas.” i don’t understand. the only french you managed to learn before coming to paris, which you figured would come in handy, and as it turned out - it did. a point for you.
“the competition,” the guy scratched the back of his neck, clearly trying to find the right words. “begin soon.”
“do you want us to get out of the pool?” mingyu asked, pointing at him and you and then the outside of the pool.
“yes, yes,” the volunteer nodded quickly.
well, you could wave your race bye bye.
maybe the universe didn’t want you and mingyu together, maybe all you were destined to be was friends? besides, one silly race wouldn’t make a difference, if anything, it would probably lead to you pulling a muscle, which would mean a big disaster with your eliminations right around the corner.
your fate was to end up alone for the rest of your life, crying over a guy you could never have. typical.
“shit,” mingyu sighed, taking off his goggles. “i really wanted to race you.”
you sent him a quick smile, dismissing his teasing tone. the quicker you’d realise this wouldn’t work out the better for your poor heart.
“yeah, that’s a bummer,” you said, grabbing onto the edge of the pool to pull yourself up.
mingyu grinded his teeth and side eyed the volunteer. if it weren't for the dozens of people around you who were clearly starting to prepare for the race, he would have thrown the guy into the water with his own bare hands.
“thanks for being a cockblock, dude.”
well, not literally, but this had to be the first time mingyu managed to talk to you without stuttering every other word and not acting that embarrassing. but no. someone had to sweep in and take this away from him.
“be careful,” mingyu ran a hand over his face, and looked over to you, “the tiles might be slippery.”
“you don’t say,” you said, and shot him a glare. “im not that-.”
but before you could finish your sentence one of your hands slipped and you lost the grip, splashing back into the pool.
“hey, hey,” mingyu immediately swam up to you, closing the gap between your bodies in seconds. “are you okay?” he put his arm around your waist, turning you around in his grip so you’d face him.
shit.
“did you hit your head?” he asked quickly, taking off your cap. fuck, mingyu felt his lunch creeping back into his throat. if anything happened to you

“mhm, i think so,” you answered, disoriented. your vision was clearly unsteady and you were shaking in his embrace, though he didn’t know if that was due to the cold water or the hit.
“fuck,” he muttered, running his hand gently over your head to look for any cuts or bruises. “we need to get you out of the water.”
you nodded your head slowly, but that was a bad call, because it only made you more nauseous and made your vision even worse.
“hey, don’t move. put your other arm around my neck and hold onto me,” mingyu said.
“but i’m heavy.”
“shut it or i’ll leave you here,” mingyu grumbled, and tightened his hold around you.
with ease, as if he was born in the water, mingyu managed to get you to the edge of the pool with ladders, and called for help.
“i’m such a loser,” you mumbled, resting your head against his shoulder. “almost passing out in the middle of an olympic swimming pool,” you let out a bitter laugh, before whimpering. maybe making bad jokes right after almost cracking your skull open wasn’t a good idea.
mingyu didn’t say anything but you could feel his body tense.
“she hit her head on the tiles,” he said once the medics made their way over to you.
they quickly helped him get you out of the water without causing you more pain and laid you on the stretcher. the medics whispered something between them, or maybe you were just so out of it that you couldn’t understand what they were saying, but you could clearly make out mingyu’s voice in between.
suddenly, you felt as if you were being lifted off the ground, but your blurry vision made it impossible for you to see what exactly was going on.
“min-mingyu?” you called out.
“i’m here baby, don’t worry,” mingyu said, and reached for your hand, grasping it tightly so you’d know he was really right there next to you.
“stop calling me that,” you said, your tone bossy as usual.
“stop calling you what?” mingyu couldn’t help but giggle when he heard you scoff. good, that meant you weren’t that badly hurt.
“baby.”
“what if i don’t want to?” he asked, and ran a thumb over the back of your hand, smiling to himself when he felt your fingers wrap tighter around his.
you shook your head, or at least you tried to. “then i’ll race you and if i win you’ll stop.”
“you know i won’t let that happen,” he said softly.
“stop messing with my heart, kim mingyu.”
a champion, an olympics medalist, a man made of steel, and still, mingyu felt like he was melting under your gaze. your big eyes looking up at him, your soft lips parted in a slight gasp, your gentle fingers holding onto him for dear life

“i won’t,” he shook his head. “not until you stop messing with mine.”
as it turned out, luckily for you, the impact didn’t cause much damage. “it caused panic more than anything else,” the doctor said.
“so i’ll be able to race on monday, right?” you asked, twisting the rings around your fingers nervously. the olympics were something you sacrificed your whole life for - you couldn’t remember the last time you slept in, the last time you ate dinner with your family, the last time you had time for yourself, and if all of that would go to waste because of a stupid mistake
you didn’t know what you’d do.
“don’t worry, you’ll be just fine for the race. i think your boyfriend overreacted a bit out there,” the doctor laughed. “maybe more than a bit.”
you almost choked on the pills you were swallowing, your face burning with heat. the doctor feeding into your delusions was a big no no, and you definitely did not need that right now.
“you might want to text him though, he was sitting outside the whole time we were running tests. had to send him back to the village,” he sighed, “he looked like a kicked puppy.”
that was dangerous, and you needed to get out of there quickly.
mingyu, on the other hand, couldn’t stop worrying. after the doctor sent him off, he didn’t really know what to do with himself, and he definitely didn’t know how he ended up sitting in front of the door to your room.
god, he was being so pathetic. instead of telling you how and what he felt, he was acting like a lame highschooler trying to impress you with what? being a faster swimmer? mingyu was never good at flirting but this had to be his lowest low.
„gyu? what are you doing here?” his head shot up, and there you were - safe and sound. no bandages, nothing. for the first time since he got out of that damn swimming pool he took in a deep, proper breath.
“the doctor he, um
,”
“i know.”
“you know?”
“i know,” you nodded. why did he look so nervous all of a sudden? “shouldn’t you be at the gym? preparing for tomorrow?”
right. the race.
“i probably should,” more than “probably” to be honest. your trainer would most likely have killed him already if not for the fact that he was the best swimmer on the team. “but i needed to know that you were okay.”
“you could’ve just texted, you know,” you said. why was he being so
 un-mingyu?
he shook his head, and stood up to his full 6 feet 2. “let me put it this way,” he took a step towards you, “i needed to see if you were okay.”
was he really about to risk your whole friendship? all this time spent on getting to know you, your likes and dislikes, what annoyed you and how he could push your buttons to see that bright smile on your face that always made his day a bit better. he didn’t want to lose all of that.
but
mingyu felt his hands reaching out for you on their own to make sure that you weren’t in pain anymore, to kiss any bump or scratch to make it better, to hold you close to his chest this evening and keep you safe from all the wet tiles.
“listen,” he scratched the back of his neck. he needed to do something with his hands. “i have to tell you one thing, and please just let me say it because i don’t think i’ll have enough courage to say it ever again.”
you nodded your head, your gaze slightly confused.
it was now or never.
“okay, so i know we’re technically only friends from work, but not really since we hang out otherwise, and we’ve known each other for how long now? three years? and that’s great, i love training with you, and going to competitions with you, and hanging out with you, but lately
or not lately, really. for a long time-,”
„mingyu,” you sighed, but the boy kept on rambling. „min,” you tried again, to no avail. „gyu!”
finally, the man in front of you fell silent, looking at you with eyes wide and mouth agape.
“i,” you took a deep breath. you knew exactly where this was going. „i can’t do this right now,” you said, and watched the spark in mingyu’s eyes die out. “with what happened today, and the eliminations tomorrow
i just can’t deal with this right now,” god, this broke your heart. “i need some rest, and i need some sleep,” you added. “besides, i also have the relay tomorrow, so i need to focus. this is not only about me, but about the girls. i can’t let them down.”
mingyu’s heart dropped. if he knew this would end like this, then why was he feeling so disappointed? but he couldn’t be mad at you, no. it wasn’t your fault you weren’t feeling the same, and it definitely wasn’t your fault for wanting some rest. the olympics meant so much to you, and he knew how excited you were for them - he wouldn’t take that happiness away from you.
„of-of course,” mingyu said, though his voice, his body language, his gaze - his everything, screamed anything but „of course”. he nodded his head and shrugged. „i’ll see you later then.”
you quickly grabbed his arm before he could turn around. „gyu,” you said. „i can’t deal with this now, but i never said i couldn’t deal with this ever.”
he was so cute, you couldn’t help but hide your smile behind your hand. with slightly dishevelled hair (probably from running his fingers through them too much), un-matching shirt and pants, which you were sure were from last season, and his mingyu smile that showed off his canines
you’d have to be stupid and blind not to have a massive crush on this man.
„r-really?”
you nodded your head.
“maybe we can talk about this tomorrow?” you said, and slid your hand down his arm to his hand. “after the eliminations?”
mingyu looked down wide-eyed at your hand holding his. was this really happening? maybe he was the one to hit his head? his poor heart and fuzzy brain couldn’t actually believe that the girl he had been pining after for god knows how long was actually saying that
that she liked him back? huh, if this was a dream he hoped he’d never wake up.
“yes,” he breathed. “we can do that.”
“great,” you smiled, and mingyu felt his heart skip a beat. “you’ll be watching me tomorrow, right?”
“you know i will,” mingyu said, squeezing your hand, and this - your hand in his - this felt right. this was right, and this was how it was always supposed to be. “i always do.”
and then he did something that almost knocked you off your feet.
he quickly closed the gap between you, pushing your body gently against the door behind you, and placed a soft peck on your cheek. you almost didn’t notice how his strong arm had snuck around you, holding your waist in a featherlight touch that didn’t quite match his strong hands and big biceps, or how the other one cradled the side of your face, and how his thumb stroked your cheek. almost.
and it was only a kiss on the cheek.
“good luck, baby.”

It's a fluke that Eddie ends up a gymnast. Wayne only signs him up for summer classes at Hawkins's tumbling gym to burn off his excess six-year-old energy. Nobody, lest of all Eddie or Wayne, expects him to be talented at it.
And now, somehow, he's at his first ever elite gymnastics competition. His coaches all said he was good, but he hadn't really had a frame of reference for what that meant. Not until now. Not until he's in 3rd place after high bar, right behind Steve Harrington.
They tumbled together, as little kids. Steve a tiny boy with an absurd pompadour, monopolizing the mats for insane tumbling passes and lording his high-end competition shirts over the other kids (none of the rest even wore actual gymnastics gear; they were six and it was Hawkins).
Now, he's a swaggering fifteen year old with the same pompadour and bad attitude. They're not on the same rotation, but as Eddie moves on from his floor exercise, Steve makes a point to ram into him.
Eddie doesn't react and maybe that would've been the end of it, but he ends up placing, and Steve corners him in the locker room.
"Come to congratulate me?" Eddie smirks.
"You better watch your back, Munson." Steve shoves him into the lockers.
"I knew you were an asshole, Harrington, but I didn't realize you were a sore loser."
Steve leans close, heat melting into Eddie. "You better count yourself lucky you've gotten this far. Not really a sport for poor kids."
Eddie bristles at this. Yeah, sure, his gear is secondhand, and he and Wayne learned how to sew to mend his competition shirts, gymnastics pants, and warmups, but they work hard, together, for Eddie to do this. "Don't worry about how I afford to be here." Eddie checks him as he brushes past. "Just fix those wobbly flairs on pommel."
The rivalry is hot and fierce and mean, made even worse by the fact that Eddie has an enormous hate-boner for Harrington. It's not, Eddie reasons, his fault. He's gay and surrounded by guys whose bodies are honed for a sport based on strength, endurance, and agility, Steve the most beautiful of all. So he looks, and he longs, and he hates Harrington with every fiber of his being.
Eddie's sure this would continue for their competitive lives, but everything changes the summer before their junior years of high school. They're at a training camp, the kind for world champion, Olympic hopeful types. Steve is practicing ring dismounts when he loses himself in the air, lands hard off the mat, destroys something in his knee. He needs surgery, the recovery time 6-8 months, if he's lucky to be able to compete again.
Maybe a year ago, Eddie would be excited by this development, but now it's kind of devastating. He doesn't bother examining why.
--
Steve comes back and he's--different. His first competition, he comes up, asks, "Eddie, hey, can we talk?" And, well, they've never been on a first name basis before and Steve is so so pretty, so he agrees.
"I just want to say, I'm sorry how I treated you back before. I was a real piece of shit and you never deserved it."
Eddie truly doesn't know how to respond, never foresaw this day coming. "Thanks. Uh--yeah. Thanks."
They stare at each other for a few seconds longer before Steve taps him on the shoulder and walks away.
It's not the only thing that's changed about Steve. There's this big group of feral children that follow him around everywhere now. Apparently, Harrington told them Eddie plays dnd and now they follow him around too.
He also. Has a girlfriend now. She's pretty; delicate looking. Her name is Nancy. And she's nice, or whatever. Eddie definitely isn't jealous. It's just. He's been with Steve in locker rooms for years, and he thought--well, he'd seen the way Harrington's eyes sometimes lingered on a bicep, a well-cut thigh, the intrigue of a pelvic v, and he thought--not that it matters, but he thought--
Anyway, Steve has a girlfriend.
---
They're at the winter classic, when it happens.
Eddie is doing good. Like. Really good. Like his routines, they're not flawless, but he's hitting the big skills and sticking landings, and stays in 2nd throughout the majority of the rotations.
It's not a huge shock when he finishes his final rotation, vault, and winds up finishing in 2nd. What is a shock, though, is that, when the scores go up, Steve is wrapping his arms around Eddie's waist, hoisting him into the sky. And, even after he's back on solid ground, Harrington doesn't loosen his hold.
And it's, like. Nothing, right? It's nothing because he has a girlfriend and, sure, maybe he's bi, but that doesn't stop Nancy from existing.
He's not going to think about it, is the thing. He knows it doesn't mean anything, so he isn't going to dwell. It's definitely not all he thinks about during the podium ceremony, or after when he talks to media, or even later walking into the empty locker room.
Or. He thought it was empty. But Steve is there, smiling, saying "you were amazing out there."
They hug again, and Eddie tries not to enjoy the warmth of Harrington's body, the comforting strength of his toned biceps. Eddie pulls back and Steve is--he's so close, gazing at Eddie's lips and--
Steve's mouth is hot and sweet, like he's wearing cherry chapstick, and Eddie can't--he thinks of Nancy; she's nice, doesn't deserve this, they should stop--
But he's sucking on Steve's tongue and Steve is making the sweetest sounds, hard against Eddie's thigh, and nothing else matters.
---
It goes on for months.
Eddie knows he needs to end it, vows to as soon as they're apart.
It all goes out the window as soon as they're together again. He can't get enough. It's Steve. How is he supposed to resist?
(He needs to. It's horrifying, what they're doing to Nancy)
---
The children who follow Steve around invite him to dinner after the first day of the USA gymnastics championships.
Nancy is there.
It's the worst three hours of his life. He can't look at Steve, can barely speak to him.
Nancy is beautiful and smart and kind and strong. She doesn't deserve any of this.
And when Steve drops by his hotel room hours later, Eddie greets him by saying, "I can't do this anymore."
Steve's shoulders drop, eyes squeezing shut. "Right. Yeah, I--Yeah."
"I like you, Steve. A lot. But I can't--you have a girlfriend. And I can't keep being whatever this is for you."
Steve nods, won't meet his eyes. "You're right. It's not fair to either of you. I--My parents expect--And I--I'm sorry," he whispers the last part.
Eddie smiles, heart aching. "Sweetheart. I get it. But. Figure out your shit, yeah? Maybe then we can talk?"
The smile Steve flashes him is a broken thing. "Maybe. Sure."
And that's it.
Eddie cries himself to sleep that night.
The next day, he wins first in the all-around.
---
He and Steve stop speaking.
Somewhere around, ohh, the very first time they hooked up, he caught feelings. So sue him if it kills him, seeing Steve at every competition.
They don't speak again until the Olympic trials. And isn't that ridiculous? Eddie at the Olympic trials. It's such an insane pipe dream, being an Olympian, that he doesn't actually have any expectations whatsoever.
So knock him over with a feather when he fucking makes it on the team.
And so does Steve.
The announcement rings out, and Steve is there, out of nowhere, pulling Eddie into his arms. And Eddie's so hyped, so excited, that he just shouts and hugs Steve right back.
He pretends the proximity, the musk of Steve's cologne, the tangy saltiness of his sweat, doesn't bother him, doesn't transport him immediately back to Steve's bed.
They're teammates now; he can keep it casual.
Right before they leave for the games, news breaks that Steve and Nancy have broken up.
---
The Team competition at the fucking Olympics is going well. They've had good routines, with no huge errors, stay consistently within the top 5 scores. But then they're on the last rotation, parallel bars, and he's the very last competitor to go. They'll win bronze if he can score above 14.933.
But
He's inconsistent on parallel bars, always has been, something deep and psychological he can't quite let go of, and now their medal chances are all on him.
He salutes the judges, jumps into his starting position--and his mind goes quiet. Muscle memory, skill, years of training take over--he's flawless.
Eddie sticks his dismount, and the place erupts. He doesn't have a score yet, doesn't know if he's done it, but the rest of the team screams like he has.
They pull him into their arms, but Steve is closest, his grip the tightest. Their eyes keep catching, holding, and Eddie can't really breathe but he doesn't think it's the anxiety or the excitement.
The score goes up.
Not only is it high enough for bronze, it puts them in silver.
Eddie has barely a second to process before he's being hoisted into the air, Steve's arms bracing him up. The crowd's going crazy, his teammates screaming and hugging him, each other, but all he sees is Steve beaming up at him.
He's slowly lowered to the ground, Steve's arms still around him. "You were perfect, baby," Steve whispers. "Never seen anyone like you."
He wishes he could stay right there, Steve beaming at him, but they won the silver--they won the silver at the goddamn Olympics--and they have to get medals, do interviews.
They don't have a chance to be alone together until they're back at the Village, where Steve is just waiting in Eddie's room when he gets back.
"Is this okay?" Steve asks. "I wanted to talk to you and Jason let me in, but I can--I'll leave."
"Please don't." Eddie swallows. "Stay."
Steve smiles, a little. "I needed to tell you that I'm sorry for what I did to you and Nancy. It was unfair to both of you. I love her, you know? But she's not who--I'm not in love with her."
"No?"
"No. I thought it would make my parents happy, settling down with a nice girl. But it turned out it didn't actually make a difference to them, who I dated. And she isn't who I wanted to be with."
"I'm proud of you for figuring out what you really wanted. It's brave."
"I wish I could've been brave earlier." He gives a little laugh. "Before I hurt you."
Eddie doesn't know what to say to that. He wishes the same thing.
"Um, which is also why I'm here." Steve plucks at the waistband of his Team USA Nike joggers. "I wanted to see if maybe we could try again? Officially this time?"
Eddie can't keep his smile from taking over his entire face. "Sweetheart, I would love to."
"Yeah?"
And Eddie just--after all this time, he just--pulls Steve into his arms and kisses him. The silver medals, still around both of their necks, clink together with the force, but neither of them really care.
Steve sighs, nuzzles his nose to Eddie's. "Missed you so bad," he whispers. "I'm so sorry."
"Me too," Eddie smiles. "But kiss me a while."
Eventually, they fall back onto Eddie's bed, which makes a horrible noise as their combined weight topples onto it, and they break apart to laugh. Steve smooths back his hair, wrapping a few fingers through his curls to keep Eddie close, even though he's not about to go anywhere.
"Can't believe we made it all the way here." Steve's looking at him like he hung the moon
"Cause we're taking medals home?"
"Honey," he laughs. "Because I'm taking you home."

These guys met on the college gymnastics team, and soon thereafter, they were expecting a boy. The birth dad sat out for the year to focus on his pregnancy, while the other dad doubled down and became the all-around team champion.
The baby clearly inherited the bigger dad's genes and grew big and strong, but was in no hurry to be born. After reaching two weeks overdue, the dads are in the hospital waiting to be induced. They enjoy feeling the baby's movement inside the birth dad's belly one last time.

On The Highest Place On The Podium || LH44
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
summary: Fortunately, the Paris Olympics coincided with Formula One's summer break, and Lewis had no plans other than to watch his girlfriend shine at the games.
request: @evasmlp
cw: nothing but cuteness and unconditional support from Lewis in the stands
a/n: I loved this request because I can use the joke of Lewis being a wag during the games, so I'll try to make it cute and funny, I might fail, but let's see what happens. My knowledge of rhythmic gymnastics is equally scarce, so don't take it seriously, it's all nonsense. This will be short, unfortunately it's what I can do right now (I have a fucking headache
Tumblr media
"Excuse me, excuse me," he asked as he walked to his seat, mumbling apologies. Luckily the competition hadn't started yet, so he hadn't asked for anything. The gym was packed and flags of several countries were seen there, he looked around, searching for her among the competitors and as if he was attracted by a magnet, Lewis found her at the opposite end. Y/N was wearing the Spanish team's tracksuit pants and royal blue leotard that made her stand out among the other gymnasts; Lewis could see that his fiancée was anxious, she rubbed her hands on her arms and He looked around, he knew she was analyzing her opponents, even from afar the pilot could see the gears in her head turning.
Lewis wanted to be there for her and support her, tell her she would do fine, but he knew Y/N and in moments of tension, she preferred to focus alone or with the team, and being an athlete, Lewis understood her need, so ok, he would stay in the stands, cheering for her.
S/N took a deep breath, she would open the finale session with the ribbon, it was her first Olympics, and she felt that the entire weight of her country was on her shoulders; she repeated her mantra, trying to stay centered and calm, and didn't look at the stands, didn't want to know if there were Spanish flags among the fans, she didn't want to look for Lewis either. It was stupid, but she was afraid of disappointing her people and her fiancé, so she kept her eyes on the ground, looking at her blue nails also escaping from the slipper.
"Are you ready, Y/N?"
"Fuck no, but this is the best way" she replied and took off her tracksuit pants, she had chosen Hips Don't Lie as the theme for her solo, the trainer handed her the equipment and she walked to the edge of the mat, Y/N arranged the ribbon around her feet, waiting for the music to start.
As the sound echoed through the gym, Y/N spun on one foot, making the ribbon tremble around her, everyone seemed enchanted by her performance, as if Y/N and her ribbon were one. She ran across the mat and jumped, doing a split in the air as the ribbon fluttered above her head and Y/N finished the performance with a pike.
Lewis was the first to stand up, clapping loudly as he watched his girlfriend thank him and leave the mat, he didn't understand anything about gymnastics, but from what I knew, S/N had a good performance and would have high grades, the chance to go from seventh place to second and securing the silver medal for Spain were great Lewis was rooting for her to make it.
S/N swallowed more than half of the contents of the isotonic bottle, she kept her eyes on the screen while waiting for the note, her heart was a war drum, beating non-stop. 14,987 points, the highest score that she had already received in her career as a gymnast, with that she was on the podium, not the second one as she was thinking, but the first one. If everything went well, she would be Olympic champion! S/N was surrounded by the team, congratulating her and celebrating her grade.
She picked up her phone and checked her messages, smiling at the words of support and cheering from family and friends and of course, a beautiful photo taken by Lewis, at the exact moment she jumped.
You were amazing, doll, I'm proud of you.
She sobbed, holding back tears. Lewis had been so supportive of her last year as she qualified for the Olympics, he had accompanied her to the championships, and even though Y/N denied it, and Lewis was her master sponsor, and he didn't regret a single penny spent on his bride's brilliant career.
Thank you love, I wouldn't be here without you.
She looked for him in the stands, in the middle of the presentation, Lewis took a seat near the team, he needed to be with her after the solo.
Where are you?
Behind you, sweetness
She smiled widely as she jumped onto the bench to hug her fiancé. Lewis kissed her entire face, finishing with a sweet kiss on the lips.
"Of course you'd be here without me, you're amazing, love," he murmured, cupping her face in his hands. "and you're going to win the gold, showing everyone that you're the best."
"Lewis," she scolded, but she kept smiling.
A few minutes later, Y/N returned to the mat, this time with the hoop, this time she chose Julio Iglesias as the backdrop and again. Lewis watched in fascination as the bride gliding gracefully across the mat, she handled the hoop masterfully, humming the song as she performed. Lewis was so proud of her, so happy that she was achieving her goals, slowly but steadily.
Lewis was proud to be engaged to her, he loved talking about her and knew his next helmet would have the same pattern as her leotard, Lewis would honor his future wife in the best way possible.
Tumblr media
Y/N couldn't hold back her tears as she heard the Spanish anthem play, she was in her highest place, with the Spanish flag around her body. She had done it, the highest place on the podium was hers, cleanly and honestly. The photo of her on the podium was of S/N kissing the medal, red from crying as she looked at the fruit of her effort.
She looked at Lewis, her heart swelling with pride in her fiancé's eyes. She had secured the two highest places she had ever wanted: the top of the podium and a place in Lewis's heart.

The crowd in the arena roared as y/n stood at the edge of the balance beam, her heart pounding in time with the cheers. The Brazilian flag waved in every corner, and she took a deep breath, centering herself. Out of all the faces in the audience, her eyes found Pau, sitting near the front row, his hands gripping the railing tightly, his expression a mixture of nerves and awe.
He caught her gaze and mouthed "You’ve got this"
And she believed him.
The routine felt like a dream. Every flip, leap, and landing came together in perfect harmony. As she stuck her dismount, the applause was deafening. She stood there, chest heaving, as the scoreboard updated.
15.966.
She did it.
Gold.
Her teammates swarmed her, their excitement matching her own, but her mind was elsewhere. Breaking free, she ran toward the stands, ignoring the cameras and the flashing lights. Pau was already standing, his arms wide open, and she leaped over the small barrier, landing right in his embrace.
"You did it!" he exclaimed, hugging her tightly as the crowd cheered even louder.
Tears streamed down her face as she pulled back just enough to press her lips to his, the world fading away in that moment. When she finally pulled apart, his hands cupped her face, his smile brighter than any medal.
"You’re incredible, meu amor. I’m so proud of you," he whispered.
"I couldn’t have done it without you," she replied, her fingers brushing against his jaw.
The rest of the night passed in a blur of celebrations, but as y/n fell asleep that night, Pau’s arms wrapped around her, she couldn’t stop smiling. Tomorrow, it would be his turn.
Tumblr media
The following day, y/n sat in the stadium, nerves replacing the euphoria from her win. The Spanish flag was draped over her shoulders as she watched Pau and his teammates battle through the final match. Every pass, every shot, every save felt like a lifetime, but when the whistle blew, and the scoreboard confirmed their victory, she was on her feet, cheering louder than anyone.
Pau fell to his knees on the field, overcome with emotion, before his teammates piled on him in celebration. Her heart swelled with pride, tears gathering in her eyes as she watched him soak in the moment. But then his eyes found hers, and he broke away, running straight toward the stands.
"Pau!" she called out, leaning over the railing just as he reached her.
He jumped up, his arms wrapping around her waist as she leaned down to meet him. His lips crashed against hers, his sweat-soaked jersey and the salty tang of his tears making the moment raw and real.
"You’re a champion," she whispered against his lips, her fingers threading through his damp hair.
"And so are you," he replied, his forehead resting against her. "Gold for gold, yeah?"
She laughed softly, brushing a stray curl from his forehead. "Gold for gold."
The cameras captured the moment, but neither of them cared. This was for her and him—a promise fulfilled, a dream realized, and a love that shone brighter than the medals around their necks.

“No freakin’ way.”
Ellie’s eyes were wide and she was smiling bigger than Joel had seen her smile in what seemed like forever as she watched the rodeo.
It had been his idea to take her to the fair. He thought it would be good for her - get out, have some fun, take her mind off things for a bit. He offered to bring along a friend of hers from school, too, but she just gave him a look.
“What,” she said. “Going to fly Riley in from Boston?”
“Was kinda hopin’ someone a bit more local,” he said, awkwardly cupping the back of his neck. “Must have someone you’d like to hang out with
”
“Welp,” she said, flopping back on her bed and holding her comic book over her head. “Then I’m afraid you’re shit outta luck, old man.”
He wasn’t sure how much fun she’d have just hanging out with him all day but she’d seemed to be having a good enough time. He showed her how to shoot the air rifles at the games and she dragged him through a fun house and they both delighted in all the deep fried snack options.
It had been Ellie who wanted to go to the rodeo. Joel hadn’t been to one in years, not since he was close to Ellie’s age and he’d gone with his dad at this same fair, but it was something that Ellie wanted to do. And, after the last few years, he was happy to do whatever made her happy.
He just hadn’t expected her to fall completely in love with the horses and one rider in particular.
“We got a real special treat for y’all here today,” the announcer had said. “Now, she ain’t competing today - and let me tell you, every man in the building is thankful she ain’t because they’ve all lost to her at one time or another - but we have the one, the only queen of the rodeo scene doing a showcase in a few events today, startin’ with trick riding. Five time world champion -“
There was a loud whoop from behind Joel and he missed your name but he watched as you rode out into the arena, standing on the backs of two horses, a foot on each animal, one hand on the reins and the other high in the air waving at the crowd as you guided the horses past the stands. He watched - just as in awe as Ellie - as you jumped the horses and threw your body around on them as though you were a gymnast on a bar and not a 2,000 pound animal.
He was awed again when, between other events, you stayed on the back of bucking bronco far longer than any of the competitors and again when you demonstrated roping calves. He didn’t think the announcer had been joking when he said the men here were thankful you weren’t competing, he had a feeling you blew them out of the water every time.
“Hey Joel,” Ellie said when a girl who reminded Joel of Sarah when she was younger was doing her trick riding routine. “She’s out there again! I think she’s a coach
”
He looked where Ellie was pointing and she was right, you were standing at the edge of the arena, switching between fidgeting with your necklace and yelling as the girl nearly dragged on the ground from the side of the horse.
“Think you’re right,” Joel said.
“Think she teaches lessons or something?” Ellie asked, looking up at him with wide eyes.
“I dunno baby girl
” Joel said, hesitant.
“Can we find out?” She looked back out at the arena. “Because that looks so fucking cool.”
“Language,” Joel said and he caught her eye roll out of the corner of his eye. He sighed. “But yeah, we can see if we can track ‘er down after the rodeo, see if she’ll teach you. She may not be anywhere around here, though
”
But Ellie looked so fascinated, so happy, Joel knew that the location didn’t matter much. He’d figure something out.
After the rodeo, the two of them made their way around, against the flow of people, finding the entrance to the place where the livestock and competitors were and Joel caught sight of you, talking to the girl who reminded him so much of a young Sarah. A man stopped to talk to you and you gave him some direction before he came toward where Joel and Ellie were standing and watching.
“‘Scuse me,” Joel said as he went past. He stopped, frowning slightly at Joel. “Sorry to bother you but
well, we were wondering if you knew that woman there, the one who was doing the showcase riding before.”
“Oh, yeah,” he laughed. “I know her alright. That’s my sister.”
Joel tried to ignore the way his heart beat a little faster knowing that this guy wasn’t your husband.
“Can I help you with anything?” He continued. “She’s also my boss, I work at her ranch.”
“Was wondering if she did any teaching
” Joel said.
“Because I really want to learn how to do that shit,” Ellie cut her off. “So fucking cool.”
“Ellie!” He gave her a look. “Come on, baby girl, language.”
“Sorry,” she flinched.
Joel looked back to the man.
“Anyway,” he said. “Was hoping she was taking new students
”
“She is,” the man said, reaching into his back pocket and pulling out a business card, handing it over to Joel. The words Triton Ranch were embossed on the front. “I’m Richie, you can email me there and I can help get you all set up for
”
“Can you believe this shit?” You stalked up to Richie, arms crossed tightly over your chest. “Been out here for 30 years and there’s still this sexist bullshit
”
You seemed to notice Joel and Ellie standing there then, looking them up and down before raising your eyebrows to your brother.
“Some new potential clients,” Richie said. “Interested in riding lessons.”
You looked between Joel and Ellie again.
“Which one of you?” You asked.
“Me,” Ellie said, sounding almost giddy.
“Good,” you said. “Need more women out here, some of these men
We’re based near Austin, that work for you two?”
“Perfect,” Joel said, trying to not stare at you because damn were you pretty, especially this close. “That’s where we are, too.”
“Tuesday, 5:30 p.m.,” you said. “Come with boots with a one inch heel on ‘em, you need something to help you stay in stirrups. I got other safety gear you can use
 HEY ASSHOLE!”
You stormed off mid-sentence, stalking up to a man who didn’t look remotely prepared to deal with you grabbing him roughly by the shoulder and yanking him around to face you before shoving him back.
“Alright, that’s my cue to go rein her in before she does any real damage,” Richie said, going to follow you. “See you Tuesday, 5:30!”
“Tuesday, 5:30!” Ellie called back before turning to beam at Joel. “This is going to be awesome.”
Joel watched as Richie pulled you back from the man you were trying to pick a fight with, your eyes going wide like fawn, a look of almost innocent indignity on your face as your brother stepped in. Joel resisted the urge to smile a little, the idea of something like Bambi picking a fight. You were
 something.
“Think you’re right,” he said.
***
Tuesday
“Savvy, that horse is gonna walk all over you if you keep lettin’ her do that,” you said, watching her from near the fence, your thumb looped through your husband’s wedding band that hung from a chain around your neck. You fidgeted with it, sliding it back and forth as you tried not to panic at your daughter being on the back of a dumb broke horse, tried to remind yourself that you’d been on unbroke horses younger than she was now, tried not to hear Mark’s voice in your head, already nervous about Savvy wanting to go into the same line of work as you. “You gotta be firmer than you’re used to
”
“She’s not responding though,” she said, huffy.
“Because she’s not well broke yet,” you said. “You’re the one who said you wanted to try your hand at breaking horses, you gotta keep them under control
”
Nova, the horse Savvy was on, started pawing anxiously at the ground, tossing her head.
“Savvy,” you said cautiously, stepping closer and gripping the wedding band tightly now. “Ease up, she’s gettin’ restless, dismount if you can
”
She nodded but when she adjusted, the horse bucked and you shot forward as Savvy gave a sharp shriek, ending up on her back. You had to jump to grab the reins out of the air and did your best to pull Nova into a one rein stop from on the ground as Savvy scrambled out of the way. Nova stilled quickly, her nostrils flaring.
“You OK baby girl?” You called to Savvy, keeping your eyes on Nova, staring her down.
“I’m OK,” she called back weakly. “But ow.”
You laughed a little.
“Told you you were gonna get thrown at some point,” you said before reaching a hand up to pet Nova’s muzzle. “And what’s your excuse, young lady? Hm?”
She huffed.
“Can’t go throwin’ people,” you said. “You think you get treats when you behave that way? Hm? Because now I gotta get on you and take you around real quick to make sure you know you can’t get out of shit by doin’ that and neither of us is going to be happy about it.”
She huffed again.
“Well, s’long as we’re in agreement,” you said, keeping the reins in your hand as you ran it over her side. You mounted her and she tossed her head. “Savvy, back behind the fence.”
She sighed.
“Yes, Mom.”
You kept a tight hold on Nova, your knees tighter to her ribs than they usually would be. You eased her into a walk, then a trot, gradually up to a gallup as you took her around the pasture before realizing that you had an audience, the large, handsome man from the rodeo a few days earlier with his teenaged daughter standing at the fence with Savvy and Richie as you rode back around. You brought Nova over and pulled her to a stop near them, the man watching you with a small, crooked smile on his face and fuck, he was handsome. Tall, broad, tan. Exactly your type when it came to men.
“Now I know you didn’t forget,” Richie smirked a little and you wanted to kick him. Just because he knew this guy was your type didn’t mean he had to rub it in. “This is Joel and Ellie, they’re here for her lesson.”
You nodded, catching your breath a little before introducing yourself.
“And I didn’t forget,” you said, shooting Richie a glare. “Just had to get wild thing here under control before I put her away for the day. Don’t worry, Ellie, not putting you on her. I’ve got just the horse to get you started on.”
You dismounted and gave Nova an approving pat before turning to Savvy.
“Can I trust you to get her settled?” You asked, brows raised.
“I can do it!” She said, a little defensive.
“Alright,” you said, and she climbed the fence and took the reins from you. You shed your hat now that you needed to look up at Joel and jerked your head toward the barn. “Follow me.”
Ellie was on you like glue and you looked down to see that she was in a pair of cowboy boots.
“Good,” you said, nodding at the shoes. “You’ll be thankful for those when you’re trying to get a grip on a horse. You ever ridden before?”
“We did a trail ride once,” she said. “But that was a few years ago, right?”
She looked back over her shoulder toward Joel.
“Yeah,” he said. “Before
Yeah, it was about three years ago now.”
You nodded.
“Take it you like animals?” You said as you made your way through the stables, going for the stall of the horse you’d had Richie get ready for this lesson. “Sure hope so, since you want to learn riding.”
“Hell yeah,” Ellie said.
“Ellie,” Joel said, a warning tone in his voice.
“Sorry,” she said, rolling her eyes. You smiled. “Yes. I do. Even though Joel won’t let me get a dog.”
“We can talk about it when you’re off school for the summer,” he said and you tried not to frown. If she was calling him Joel, he wasn’t her dad. You hoped this girl hadn’t been through too much, she seemed like a good kid.
“Well,” you said, coming to a stop at the stall. “You can come hang out with Shimmer here even if he doesn’t let you get a dog.”
Ellie’s face lit up, looking at the horse with a huge smile on her face.
“Shimmer is a rescue,” you said, reaching up to scratch behind her ears. “Got her when she was a yearling a few years back from an unlicensed breeding operation. Poor thing was underfed and skittish as hell but she came around. She’s a real sweet, gentle horse and she loves when people can be real sweet and gentle with her. Think you can do that?”
“Yeah,” Ellie said, smiling at you. “Definitely.”
“Good,” you smiled back, reaching to a bin mounted between stalls and pulling some feed out. “Hand out, palm flat.”
She obeyed and you gave her the feed. Her eyes went a little wide.
“Now keep your palm real flat and hold it out for her,” you said. “You’ll feel her teeth kinda brush your skin a bit but she won’t hurt ya.”
She obeyed and looked on in awe as Shimmer ate from her hand.
“Go ahead and give her a pet,” you said when the feed was gone. “Let her smell you first and once she nudges your hand, she’s OK with you touchin’ her.”
Ellie did as she was told, Shimmer pressing her nose into her hand almost immediately now that she’d associated Ellie with food. You smiled a little as Ellie beamed.
“Hey Shimmer!” Ellie said affectionately, petting her gently. “Aren’t you just the prettiest thing?”
Shimmer chuffed happily and Ellie looked back at Joel.
“She likes me!”
Joel chuckled.
“Yeah, think she does.”
“How about we take her out, get you on her,” you said before turning to Joel. “Just assuming Richie got you all set with the paperwork and whatnot?”
ïżœïżœHe did,” Joel nodded.
“Good,” you said. “Thank God for him, lord knows I don’t got the mind for the paper pushing side of this operation.”
You nudged the two of them back and got Shimmer out, giving her an affectionate pat as you led her toward the pasture.
You worked with Ellie for two hours and she was a natural. She was very in tune with her horse, learning how to apply pressure and how to work with her body weight quickly. Before too long, she was ready to do more than walk her a little and you got your favorite horse, Perseus, out of the stable, only putting a bit and bridle on him before jumping on him bareback so you could keep pace with Ellie on a trip around the pasture at Shimmer’s natural walking pace.
To your surprise, Joel didn’t go and sit in the car or even scroll on his phone while you worked with Ellie. He just watched, leaning against the post fence with his hands lightly folded in front of him, a small smile on his face as she made progress. You weren’t sure you’d ever seen a parent - or parent figure, you supposed - quite so engaged, especially for a first lesson.
“Alright,” you said as the time was up and you dismounted your horse, taking the reins from Ellie. “Hop on down, we can take Shimmer back to her stall and you can say goodbye until next time.”
“I can ride her next time?” She asked, eyes bright.
“Course you can,” you said. “Shimmer can be your horse for a while.”
“Hear that, Joel?” Ellie called, more jumping off the horse than anything else. “Shimmer can be my horse!”
She started running for the fence without paying much mind to where exactly she was running, slipping on a puddle and going down quick into a pile of mud.
“Shit,” you swore, running over to her, just catching Joel damn near hurdling the fence to do the same out of the corner of your eye. You got to Ellie first, kneeling beside her, and she was laughing, flat on her back and covered in mud. You breathed a sigh of relief. “You alright there, kid?”
“I’m good,” she laughed, sitting up and looking at her mud covered hands. “Don’t know if he’ll let me in his truck now, though.”
“Scared me, baby girl,” Joel said, joining you. “You hit your head or anything?”
“Nah,” she said. “Just got nice and gross
”
She reached out and smeared some mud on his arm, near his watch. He tried to look irritated but didn’t quite manage it.
“Alright, kiddo,” he said, standing up again and offering her his hand. “Think there are some towels in the truck
”
“If you’d rather,” you said quickly. “You can shower before you go. I’m sure Savvy has some sweats you can borrow until you’re back.”
“Oh yeah, that’s way better,” Ellie said before Joel got a chance to respond, taking Joel’s hand and wiping her hands on her jeans. It didn’t seem to make much difference. “Because this is - sorry, Joel - fucking gross.”
You laughed.
“Yeah, welcome to ranch life,” you said. “C’mon, we’ll go up to the main house, get you cleaned up a bit.”
You cut through the barn and asked Richie to get Shimmer and Perseus settled before getting Savvy from where she was sitting and reading, perched on a stall door next to Nike, your oldest horse that you’d bought off your old boss when you started your ranch 10 years earlier.
“Savvy, this is Ellie,” you said, introducing the girls. Savvy looked like she was stifling a laugh and waved. “Ellie, this is my daughter Savvy. Savvy, do me a favor, we’re goin’ to the main house to get Ellie cleaned up before she heads home, can you show her where your bathroom is and get her something to wear home?”
“Sure!” She said, hopping down and walking up to Ellie. “Nice to meet you. Are you learning how to ride?”
“Yeah!” Ellie said brightly. “It was so f
freaking cool, I was on Shimmer and she was so soft and
”
“Oh yeah, Shimmer’s the best,” Savvy said knowingly, the two girls walking ahead. You smiled a little, watching them as they talked, fidgeting with Mark’s wedding band again.
“You really don’t gotta go through this much trouble,” Joel said, staying alongside you as you followed the girls to the large white farmhouse you called home. “I’m sure I’ve got some towels in the truck and I’d hate to get your house all muddy
”
You scoffed.
“This is a ranch,” you said. “The house sees mud every day. It’ll live. And it’s no trouble. I’d much rather send you home with a bag of muddy clothes than a muddy kid.”
Savvy led Ellie upstairs, a little trail of mud behind them that made you smile. You’d clean it up later but, strange as it was, you loved the little signs of the life you led now. The one where you worked with horses that were yours or that you picked who to sell them to, got to work with passionate kids like Ellie and got mud on the floors of the house your husband had fixed up for you when you’d bought it for a steal years earlier. You kicked off your boots at the door.
“C’mon,” you said, jerking your head toward the kitchen. “Let me get you a drink.”
Joel just stared at you for a moment before following you, stopping at some of the pictures on wall as you went to the fridge.
“Sweet tea?” You asked. “I got stronger stuff, too, but not sure how much of a drive home you’ve got
”
“Tea’s good,” he said. “Thanks.”
You poured him a tall glass and got one for yourself before joining him at the pictures and handing him the drink.
“Thank you,” he said again and you just nodded, taking a sip yourself and looking at the pictures that you so rarely noticed individually anymore. Savvy’s school portraits, pictures of her on podiums, you at the world championships

“This your wedding day?” He asked, nodding to one of the bigger pictures, one of you in an floor-length white eyelet lace dress, the toe of your best pair of boots peaking out the bottom as you smiled up at your husband, who was standing beside you in his black jeans, a button down shirt and tie.
“That’s it alright. Me and Mark,” you smiled, toying with the ring around your neck again. “Eleven years ago now. Doesn’t feel like that long but damn has a lot happened.”
“Eleven years is a long time,” Joel said. “Congratulations.”
“Thanks, but we only made it nine,” you said, taking a sip of tea and looping the ring onto your thumb. Joel frowned and looked over to you. “He died, just over two years ago.”
“Shit,” he said. “I’m sorry, I didn’t
”
You shrugged.
“It’s fine,” you said. “I mean
well it’s not, it is shit, but it is what it is, you know?”
“I do,” Joel nodded. “My wife, Tess, died, too. September, 2023. Cancer.”
“Shit,” you said this time. “That’s so hard. I’m sorry.”
“Like you said, it is what it is,” he replied.
“We could start a club,” you said. “The ‘it is what it is society for young widows.’ Membership fees are fuckin’ high but hey, at least he company is good.”
Joel snorted.
“What, too soon?” You asked, teasing lightly. You weren’t sure why you felt so comfortable talking like this with a virtual stranger but you were. There was just something about him that felt familiar, comfortable. It was something you hadn’t felt in a very long time.
“Nah,” Joel said. “Just right.”
“Good,” you said, taking another sip of tea.
“Tess is part of how we ended up here,” Joel said. “Ellie taking lessons here, I mean.”
“Yeah?” You asked, brows raised. “Was she a horse girl at heart?”
“Not really,” Joel laughed. “No, she was from Detroit and not much of a naturalist but
well, her dying hit Ellie real hard. We adopted her about four years ago and her and Tess were real close. We were gettin’ on fine just the two of us for a while but then I had to move back here to help my brother out with his business so she lost the closest thing she had to a mom and then less than two years later left all her friends, too. It’s been a rough time for her. Watching you ride at the rodeo was the happiest I’ve seen that kid in months and lord knows I’d do anything to get her to smile again.”
You smiled at him.
“Turns out, all it took was a horse,” you said.
“And you,” Joel said, watching at you with an almost uncomfortably honest look on his face. You realized then just how close you were standing to him, how fucking good looking he was - noticing him in a way you hadn’t really noticed a man since your husband died. Your heart sped up.
“OK way less gross now,” Ellie said from behind you, making you jump and you and Joel turned to look at her. “Also, way more pink.”
You stifled a laugh, Ellie in a pink sweatsuit of Savvy’s.
“Well ain’t you pretty,” Joel teased her lightly and she glared at him. He smiled. “Alright, now what do you say?”
“Thank you for the shower and the clothes,” she said. “Seriously. I was gross.”
“Yeah,” Savvy scrunched her nose. “You really were.”
You walked the two of them out to Joel’s truck, Ellie already telling him excitedly about everything she learned with you that day.
“Sounds like I’ll see you back same time next week?” You said to Joel as Ellie got in the passenger seat.
“Yeah,” Joel smiled. “We’ll definitely be back.”
“Good,” you smiled back. “Looking forward to it.”
Joel looked like he thought for a moment before he nodded.
“Yeah,” he said. “Me, too.”
A/N: I hope you enjoy what will be a pretty short look into how things go in a no outbreak reality for Joel and Bambi! I went ahead and tagged everyone on the Yearling tag list, I hope that's OK! Thank you for reading and caring about these characters, I really cannot thank you enough for this journey we've been on together. It's been such a blessing to share it with you. Love you!!

gymnast!simon would be an absolute superstar on high bar and rings, the thick bulging muscles of his biceps and upper body proof of just how strong that man would be. like that man would be a world champion, with more gold and silver medals than most of the guys he competes with. but he's humble about it, rarely ever giving more than a few words during interviews and cheeks blooming red when interviewers and commentators alike praise him for his almost inhuman abilities.
teammate!johnny, on the other hand, would be everything but humble. both him and the rest of the gymnastics world knew he was an all-around champion, with multiple medals and awards tucked neatly under his belt. he would be leaner than simon, arm muscles not nearly as girthy but with thick hairy thighs the size of literal tree trunks to show just how much power was packed into his smaller body. johnny would love the spotlight (as any good team leader would), eagerly boasting about the strength of his team and just how easy it would be for them to win gold at that the upcoming olympics.
but both johnny and simon knew that they would be nothing if it weren't for you. you were at every practice, every meet, every team meeting—just like every other athletic trainer employed by their coaches, but you were just different.
they enjoyed the way you gently tended to their sore muscles and bruises, fingertips soft against their calloused skin as you wrapped their much bigger muscles in tape and gauze. they loved having conversations with you, listening to your ramblings about current standings, other opponents, or how well they were doing in upgrading their skills. it was never just ego-boosting with you—you would actually critique their work, giving them tips on how best to avoid injuring themselves and how to protect their bodies for longevity's sake.
it would be a competition between them of who could impress you more, with johnny trying desperately to learn the most intricate vault imagineable in hopes that you would tell him how amazing he was that night. simon, on the other hand, liked showing off his strength and endurance, noticing the way you seemed to never be able to take your eyes off of him when he would swing around the high bar or hang from the rings.
(and maybe they enjoyed watching you squeeze your thighs together every time you got too close to them, with rosy cheeks and glossy eyes peeking up at them like you were imagining them breaking you in half.)

The Champions
Charles had spent a significant amount of his morning training with the rest of the men’s gymnastics team for Great Britain. He didn’t start competing for two more days, so until then it was nothing but final practices for he and the others. Charles was a five time gold medalist in the Olympic Games, and very much the main threat to other competing countries. He was the phenom that held back the United States from getting gold and he was ready to do it again. Horizontal Bar, Still Rings, and Vault. He was also one of the world’s oldest actively competing gymnasts in the sport. Most were in their twenties, but Charles had kept right on competing.
Practice was going well and he could tell other countries were getting nervous. The men’s all around would be the first event for him, and the British team was strong this year. But it was the individual events they were looking out for. This was his third run at Olympic gold and he intended to take home a medal. Every so often the seats would be filled with onlookers, wanting to either waste time or get a look at the gymnasts from the world and this morning had been no different.
But now, practice was over, and after a hot shower in the Olympic village, he’d gone out to see the sights of it all. He’d only been there about a day or so and the place was enormous. He was in plain clothes now, a black tanktop hugging at his chest over a pair of jeans. One of his favorite things was the little coffee stands that were placed periodically around the village. All you needed was your room key to get whatever you wanted. He’d placed his order, and had waited patiently as athlete after athlete received their own coffee. There were so many of them crowded in this space.
Finally, his coffee was ready and he went to fetch it but quickly realized this wasn’t his order. He’d ordered a peppermint mocha Frappuccino and this clearly wasn’t it. “ Ah excuse me? This is the wrong order. “ Now he looked around to see if anyone else might have had his, or was looking for theirs.

Bat Family Olympics
I came up with this based off of all the stuff I've been seeing about the Olympics and a few posts about the bat-family participating in the Olympics. And I couldn't help myself because I'm slowly being pulled back into this fandom (not that I ever really left, I basically just went on holiday.) So here is a very quickly put together list of the bat-family, and friends, and the Olympic sport I think they would participate in.
Bruce- I think Bruce would be really good at Sport Climbing because of all the grappling and parkouring he does around Gotham. I just don't think that he would come in gold though, maybe bronze, and it's a hundred percent because he's trying not to give the citizens of Gotham any more reasons to suspect that he's Batman.
Alfred- He's one of the older competitors at the Olympics and everyone expects him to be competing in a sport that would more suited for his age. So they're all incredibly surprised when he walks out to compete in Boxing. Even better is he wins Gold and the entire crowd goes nuts because it was the absolutely most nail-biting fight they've ever witnessed because it's Alfred against this young guy who looks like he could run circles around Alfred any day of the week. Little do they know Alfred has more than enough experience from having lived in Gotham and having experienced his fair share of break-ins at the manor. Side note: While everyone else is cheering the rest of the bat-family (while thrilled for Alfred) are busy remembering why it is they fear Alfred more than Bruce.
Selena- I went back and forth on a couple of different sports for Selena before I ultimately decided that she would kick ass at Surfing and absolutely take Gold in it. I have no other reasons for it other than I just think she would be good at it, that she would look good in a bathing suit (obviously,) and that she probably had opportunities to learn when she was taking her eccentric vacations outside of Gotham.
Dick- This one is going to be obvious but honestly it's his fault and that is Gymnastics. I believe the reasons behind this are self explanatory honestly. He does take gold though as to be expected.
Jason- Again another self explanatory one because hello he uses guns and he gets the gold. He is the only one however that has to participate under a different name because while Gotham may have accepted the fact that Jason just miraculously came back from the dead and that the rest of the Wayne family are just pretending that nothing every happened. The rest of the world and the legal system have not so as far as the rest of the world is concerned Jason Todd is still dead. He does however have a twin brother named Peter Todd who is an Olympic champion in shooting.
Tim- I didn't really know what to give Tim because there's no Olympic sport for hacking yet so I decided to give him Cycling Mountain Bike. In part because I thought it would be funny, and also in part because I think he needs the adrenaline rush of hurling himself down a mountain with very little protection to feel alive. He places Silver and oddly enough still doesn't feel anymore alive.
Steph- Does weightlifting. She doesn't look like she does so everyone just assumes it's kind of a joke when she steps up for the weightlifting portion of the Olympics. But little do they know that she weight training with the fridge of man we call Jason Todd, she's just all lean muscle. So when she lifts this weight that is easily three times her own body weight the crowd looses it much like with Alfred, and Steph goes home with the Gold. And Jason is standing off to the side beaming with pride.
Damian- Again self explanatory because he does fencing. He does it mainly because it's a good, approved, way of hitting people with a sword. It may not be his katana but it'll do. He also thinks it's one of the more dignified and better sports of the Olympics. And yes he does take the gold. An Al Ghul and a Wayne would settle for nothing less.
Babs- I think she would do Equestrian and I think it would be a hundred percent because she had a horse girl phase growing up and she always wanted a horse of her own but was never able to get one growing up in the city and on a cop's salary. She doesn't get the gold, doesn't even really place if she's being honest, but boy howdy is she happy she got to participate in it to begin with.
Cassandra- She went back to her roots (I think they're her roots, I'm a little rusty on my knowledge outside of like the core five) and decided she was going to do Taekwondo. And she absolutely kicks ass at it and easily walks away with Gold.
Duke- I didn't know what to do for Duke, and I didn't want to do something stereotypical like basketball so I went to the left field and decided that Duke would play Handball. He stumbled across the sport on total accident through tik tok but now that he's started playing it he absolutely loves it. It's also a good way for him to get better at throwing things (i.e. batarangs) with more precision and accuracy. His team actually manages to take the Gold at the Olympics too.
Kate- I admittedly don't know much about Kate outside of one batman animated movie that I vaguely remember and what I vaguely remember is that she was angry and grumpy. So I feel like Hockey would be a good sport for her to work out some of those emotions. I also understand that this is a Winter Olympic sport (pretty sure anyways) so she spends the Summer Olympics cheering on the rest of her family. However when the Winter Olympics come along she absolutely dominates on that ice and for sure wins Gold or Silver.
I did these next ones for funsies.
Harley- I think she would do wrestling and she would be a little terrifying at it too honestly. She gets silver but it's only because of a technicality .
Ivy- She does volleyball if only because it's the most environmentally friendly one and doesn't involve riding over/trampling plants like Tim's sport does. Plus she enjoys being in the sun after being stuck in the smog and fog filled city that is Gotham. She gets bronze but only because she kept getting distracted by the sun and would just randomly stand there soaking up rays.
Roy- He does Archery. Side note: Oliver also does archery and him and Roy have mad beef and are constantly trying to one up each other when they compete against one another. So far their amount of Gold medals are tied but Roy maintains that he's still the only one who hasn't ever gotten a bronze medal unlike Oliver which is a whole other story in of itself.

heyyyy so in response to your post about an olympics icemav au... i'm having crazy brainworms about an idea & i need to tell someone before i explode. Steve Nedoroscik on the u.s. men's gymnastics team gives me the same vibes as Bob, so i'm imagining an olympics au wherein IceMav run the men's gymnastics program as coaches, and the daggers are on the teams. Ice & Mav back in the day dominated in gymnastics & so really just competed against each other each time. now they are bickering husbands helping run a killer program (& have their pommelhorse secret weapon Bob). Cyclone, Warlock, & Hondo coach with them, with Penny head doctor. Phoenix, Halo, & Amelia from the women's team pester the boys all the time. IceMav take Payback, Fanboy, Hangman, Rooster & Bob to the olympics & medal! so. yeah that's the idea. this isn't really a request, i just needed to tell someone & your asks are open 😭 but you can use any of this if you want
ok your mind is INSANE bc this picture is so vivid from just your one paragraph. like it all matches up so perfectly i’m so glad you put this idea into the world đŸ€đŸ™‚â€â†•ïž
i don’t want to take over your idea, but here are a few hc’s that i picture for this scenario bc as soon as i read this my brain went oh wow:
icemav’s background:
- ice is the eldest son of immigrants from the ussr, and his father pushes him everyday to be the best gymnast he can be. he trains daily, only enters the best training gyms, and works under some of the best coaches money can afford.
- ice is 17 when the 1976 olympics roll around, and everyone expects he’s going to dominate on the international stage. what they don’t expect, however, is for tom to announce at family dinner that he’s chosen to represent the united states at the games rather than his parent’s beloved ussr.
- after the shockwave announcement, ice’s dad doesn’t speak to him for weeks, and he spends countless nights second guessing his decision. sure, he understands why his parents are upset, but they literally immigrated to this country so he could be american. this is his home, it’s the place that’s made him, and he wouldn’t want to compete for any other country.
- it’s not until after the games, when he has 3 gold medals around his neck and a hand to hold tightly in his own, that he knows for certain he made the right choice.
- mav, in contrast, has a complete underdog story. it’s almost storybook: growing up without a father, scrapping his way in shitty gyms and abusive coaches, and coming out the other side as the best damn gymnast anyone west of the mississippi had ever seen. when he makes the 76 olympic team, he’s cocky and brash and is absolutely not ready for the unmovable force that is tom kazansky to enter his life.
- at first ice and mav don’t get along - ice is too focused on the competition and mav is too focused on trying to outperform ice. the tension grows for a few weeks after they both qualify for the team. it all changes when goose falls from the high bar in practice and breaks his wrist. with their best teammate out, the boys have to come together to do their best and keep up team morale.
- of course they both do amazing and walk away champions!!!! i’m imagining team gold, all-around ice gold and mav silver, ice high bar gold, and mav pommel horse gold. they start a new era for men’s gymnastics, absolutely dominating the competition and looking cool as fuck doing it. little boys sign up for gymnastics classes because they wanna be like maverick, and ice’s wheaties box takes up space on kitchen tables all around america.
the team now:
- ice doesn’t have any noticeable accent in his day-to-day life, but sometimes he starts to speak in russian when he’s nervous or pissed off. hence the murmured repetitions of xуĐč and ĐŸĐžĐ·ĐŽĐ”Ń† when hangman gets a little too sassy or bob clips his hand and falls off the horse.
- the daggers complain a lot about mav’s strict training routines and insanely high expectations, and one day mav can’t take anymore. without a word, he takes his whistle off, slips out of his shoes, and proceeds to perform an almost perfect pommel horse routine. the boys stand in awe as he swings around, his body in complete control despite it being 30+ years since he’s competed professionally. when it’s over the daggers start apologizing profusely, and ice just laughs and rolls his eyes at the absolute mad man he’s been in love with since he was 17.
- obviously there has to be some angst regarding bradley’s entry into the sport and the legacy he feels he carries on his shoulders. like yeah, he’s not a nepo baby, but he’s also not not a nepo baby. i mean, the two head coaches of the men’s olympic team are his godparents, for god sake. maybe mav tries to keep him out, thinking of goose’s lost dreams and all of their long term injuries. maybe he pushes him to do something else with his life, constantly saying things like maybe you could be a pilot or something, baby goose. of course, it doesn’t work. in the end, mav cries as bradley steps up on the olympic podium with the medal around his neck, thinking, not for the first time, how lucky he was to have met nick bradshaw all those years ago.
- penny being a social butterfly outside the gym but taking absolutely no shit as soon as she steps onto the floor. she has no problem asking the hard questions, and will not hesitate to defend an athlete with her life. she helps lead the movement to include mental health as part of the wellness checks for athletes, and doesn’t respond kindly to anyone who blows off her recommendations. everyone is slightly scared of her, but she’s only stern because she loves the athletes to death.
- amelia is known for always checking in on everyone and makes sure both the men’s and women’s teams are feeling their best physically and mentally bc of her mom’s occupation. she’s always willing to listen or offer up advice for those who need it. she’s definitely the little sister of the group and they’re all unbelievably protective of her and her huge heart.
- jake gives bob a lot of shit when they first meet because he doesn’t look anything like a gymnast. he’s got these huge glasses and he’s super lean and jake can’t help but tease him for it. it all changes when he finally sees bob on the horse, though, moving with more grace than he’s seen anyone move before. by the time the olympics roll around, jake is his biggest supporter, cheering so loudly from the side that even the people in the rafters can hear him.
i don’t really know anything about gymnastics, so don’t hate me if things are incorrect/inaccurate. thanks again for sharing this idea. hope y’all enjoyed and thanks for reading!!!

B.E.N dating hcs
(But make it moderately raw so tw for emotional abuse)
Kudos to you! You managed to get with a crazed computer entity! What's the worst that can happen? Well, a lot actually.
Let's start off with the bad:
BEN is ridiculously manipulative and will use every method in the book. It'll make you feel comfortable and even loved. Though it's never for genuine romance, it is all for his own twisted desires. Whatever you're lacking in life, it'll replace that gap. Slowly you'll start to rely on him and divulge all of your trust in him. Having all your fears and aspirations confided in BEN is the worst thing you could do. It's attentive and calculated nature means it will use EVERYTHING against you. Plus, BEN's cryptic responses makes the relationship even more "entertaining".
He's extremely controlling and will freak out if they feel like their grip is slipping. There will never truly be an equal footing between you two for obvious reasons. BEN cares little for boundaries and treats you more like a pet or a toy than an actual human. You will never feel at peace, with eyes constantly surveying your every move. He'll think it's amusing that you let yourself get treated like this willingly. All in the name of "love". It takes joy in seeing how its abuse impacts you physically and mentally. To make matters even more humorous; you always come crawling back. In a sense, he enjoys the attention. However, he'll never admit that.
Major superiority complex. He will judge you and will talk down to you whenever he sees fit. It'll be blunt and straight to the point as always. If you're not perfect, then what business does he have respecting you? BEN knows every language, every problem, everything. Yet, you can't even wrap your head around something so trivial. On a good day, it's seen as amusingly pathetic (or cute). On a bad day, it is absoluetly pitiful.
Temperamental. It's argumentative in the sense that it will argue at you and you will listen. It is never arguing with you. It's the champion of mental gymnastics. He thinks he's above arguing and that he'd never waste his energy doing something so frivolous. Yet, he does it. (It certainly doesn't make life easier when the spirits within the network occasionally argue). BEN can be snappy and is always quick with his words. Whipping out the most out-of-pocket responses. Don't even think about talking back. If it's already annoyed enough to be arguing, the last thing he wants is for you to argue back. Who are you to talk back to him?
By some miracle, you manage to make him think of you fondly, it's emotions can shift into a few things. Generally speaking, he's usually in it to mess with someone. BEN knows having a healthy and long relationship is impossible. It's past the point of being curious about what love would be like. Nor does it have the urge to feel something they haven't felt in ages. If it's able to care in some way, they'd begin to distance themselves from you. As it is for the best.
On the other hand, what if it becomes fond of this new feeling? To be cared for in a way that's uniquely human? To be unconditionally doted and needed? If these feelings and delusions persist, the fanciful unlikeliness of this becoming an obsession becomes a horrifying reality. It will happen slowly, but once in full swing that is when true hell is experienced. Once it gets out of this mindset, they've already taken everything from you. You have served your purpose and now you are nothing like you were before. Whatever about you that made him feel this attached is certainly gone now. You're just a husk of what you once were. You'll die and will be irrelevant in the grand scheme of things.
