kinda wanna post a series about icemav through the years with cute pics and little drabbles and such. want to be casual about it but i just know i’d spend so much time on it bc i’m obsessive (i can’t be casual about anything with icemav lol). pls send strength

some thoughts on the first time mav goes home with ice for christmas:

- ice grew up in new england and went to USNA, so snow at christmas is fairly common for him. that changes, though, when he’s deployed after graduation and suddenly has to spend five christmases in a row in various tropical climates. the holiday becomes a boring and lonely affair, and ice buries himself in his work to try to avoid the emptiness he feels each year.

- following topgun, ice takes the offered teaching position, and for the first time since college he’s stateside for christmas. unsurprisingly, he’s absolutely buzzing. ice books a flight as soon as his leave gets approved and then immediately calls his mom to share the good news. he has to pull the phone away from his ear with how loud she screams.

- mav is surprised when ice first asks him to come home with him. sure, they’re serious, and he was hoping they’d spend the holidays together, but meeting ice’s family feels like a big step. even so, mav has never been one for hesitation and uncertainty, so he shakes his head yes and buys a plane ticket that very night.

- mav is cold as soon as they step off the plane, so he can’t be blamed when he purchases three different sweatshirts during his week stay at the kazansky household.

- mav has never had a white christmas (one of the few critiques he has about his home state of texas), so ice isn’t shocked when he spends almost two hours outside making a snowman. they work together to bring the creation to life, rolling up huge snowballs, searching for rocks and sticks, and sifting through a back closet for the perfect scarf and mittens. when they’re done, ice is exhausted, but he can’t help but smile when he sees the look of pure joy on mav’s face.

- unbeknownst to mav, the kazanskys always wear matching pajamas on christmas morning. mav thinks it’s cute, laughing as he watches ice change into a pj set with an absolutely abhorrent pattern. ice only smirks and leaves the room, returning a few seconds later with another set. when mav realizes it’s for him, his eyes start to water, and there’s a warmth in his chest for the rest of the day that he can’t describe.

- of course mav cries for real when he reads the name pete on a few presents under the tree. the gifts he opens are thoughtful and loving, and he feels so grateful to have been welcomed into the kazansky’s home and hearts. as he sits on the couch taking it all in, he dreams of the christmases to come and sees flashes of scenes: fighter jet ornaments hanging from a tree branch, hot chocolate on the stove, bradley screeching with delight as he opens a new toy. and in them all, he sees ice at his side, smiling his beautiful smile and reaching out to hold mav’s hand in his.

this note on mav’s wiki page is taking me out. i guess whoever wrote it wanted to point it out as an overlooked issue with the movie’s realism, but it just makes me think once again about what kind of favors ice has been calling in for mav for the last three decades.

like imagine ice swallowing his pride as he explains to the secretary of the navy and defense secretary exactly why pete mitchell should get such special treatment (something he wouldn’t have done when they first met even if his life depended on it). and after he’s been questioned to hell and back and it’s finally agreed that pete will be able to stay on active duty, ice gets up, leaves the meeting room, and smiles like an idiot as he calls the love of his life and gives him the news.

“they signed off on it, pete. you get to stay in.”

“no fucking way! what did you say to make them say yes?”

“i’m not sure. i didn’t know what would be convincing, but i guess they liked what they heard. or maybe it was just luck.”

“oh, it wasn’t luck baby. it was all you. now get your ass home so i can thank you properly.”

it’s been a few months but i think it’s about time to get back to my top gun obsession. all it took was my parents randomly turning on tgm while watching tv and now i’ve been thinking about icemav for 3 days 🫣
