In cis-but-2-ene, the two methyl groups are on the same side of the double bond; in trans-but-2-ene, the two methyl groups are on opposite sides of the double bond.

Scientists are calling for changes to chemistry textbooks after discovering a fundamental aspect of structural organic chemistry has been incorrectly described for almost 100 years. The team from Cardiff University's School of Chemistry, dispute the long-held belief that alkyl groups—a chemical group consisting of carbon and hydrogen atoms arranged in a chain—donate electrons to other parts of a molecule. Instead, their research shows alkyl groups actually pull electrons away from the rest of the molecule, making them electron-withdrawing when compared to hydrogen.

hey guys ! very unfortunately, i'm entering midterm week so two-faced updates will be super inconsistent across the next few days. i will try to update as much as i can but i'm worried if i do, then all the chapters will be about organic chemistry or anatomy so. yk.
think of it like gojo n the gang are also going through their midterms so they do not have time to go on twt (soon to be called x like wtf is that) and be silly
thank you for all the love on two-faced as always !! love u guys 🤍

SN1 vs SN2 for Haloalkanes
-- depends on substitution of alkyl halide
Methyl -- CH3-X -- favors SN2 -- SN1 does not occur -- this is because the methyl carbocation is too unstable
Primary -- R-CH2-X -- favors SN2 -- SN1 is rare -- primary carbocations are unstable
Secondary -- R2-CH-X -- SN2 favored in aprotic solvents with good nucleophiles -- SN1 favored in protic solvents with poor nucleophiles
Tertiary -- R3-C-X -- SN2 does not occur -- this is due to steric hindrance -- SN1 is favored

U.S. Alkyl ether sulfates (AES) Prices 2025, News, Trend, Graph, Chart and Forecast
Alkyl Ether Sulfates (AES) prices are influenced by a variety of factors, including raw material costs, supply chain dynamics, global demand, and market trends across industries such as personal care, home care, and industrial applications. The market for AES is largely driven by the increasing demand for surfactants in the production of shampoos, body washes, liquid detergents, and other cleaning products. As a key ingredient in these formulations, AES is valued for its excellent foaming and emulsifying properties, making it an essential component in both consumer and industrial products. The pricing of alkyl ether sulfates is significantly impacted by fluctuations in the cost of ethylene oxide and fatty alcohols, which are primary raw materials. Ethylene oxide is a petroleum-derived chemical, and its price often follows crude oil trends, while fatty alcohol prices are influenced by both petrochemical and oleochemical supply chains.
In recent years, the AES market has faced volatility due to disruptions in global supply chains, logistical challenges, and shifting raw material costs. The COVID-19 pandemic played a major role in causing supply chain bottlenecks and fluctuating prices, leading to uncertainty in the market. Additionally, geopolitical tensions and trade policies have contributed to pricing fluctuations, especially in regions heavily reliant on imported raw materials. The demand for AES remains strong in emerging markets, where rising disposable incomes and increased consumer awareness of hygiene and personal care products are driving growth. Developed economies continue to witness steady demand due to the presence of well-established FMCG brands that require high-quality surfactants for their formulations.

Another key factor affecting alkyl ether sulfates prices is the balance between supply and demand. The production capacity of major manufacturers, technological advancements in surfactant formulation, and sustainability initiatives all influence pricing trends. As industries shift toward environmentally friendly and biodegradable surfactants, there is growing interest in bio-based AES derived from natural oils instead of petroleum sources. The push for sustainable ingredients is creating additional cost considerations, as bio-based surfactants often come at a premium compared to their synthetic counterparts. However, increasing consumer preference for eco-friendly products is prompting manufacturers to invest in greener alternatives, potentially reshaping price dynamics in the long run.
Regionally, AES pricing trends vary due to differences in raw material availability, production infrastructure, and regulatory frameworks. Asia-Pacific remains a dominant producer and consumer of alkyl ether sulfates, with countries such as China and India playing a significant role in the global market. The region benefits from a strong petrochemical industry, which ensures a stable supply of ethoxylates, a crucial component in AES production. In contrast, Europe and North America have stringent environmental regulations that impact the production and pricing of surfactants. The increasing emphasis on sustainable sourcing and stringent quality standards can add to production costs, leading to higher AES prices in these regions compared to their Asian counterparts.
Market competition also plays a role in determining alkyl ether sulfates prices. Several global and regional players compete in the AES market, leading to price variations based on brand positioning, production capacity, and customer relationships. Large-scale manufacturers with vertically integrated supply chains have better control over costs and can offer competitive pricing. On the other hand, smaller producers or those dependent on external raw material suppliers may face higher production costs, which can translate into higher prices for end-users. The presence of alternative surfactants, such as sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and sodium laureth sulfate (SLES), also impacts AES pricing, as companies may shift between these options based on cost-effectiveness and performance requirements.
The rising trend of e-commerce and direct-to-consumer (DTC) brands is further influencing AES pricing dynamics. The increasing popularity of private-label and niche personal care brands has led to more customized surfactant requirements, which can drive up costs due to specialized formulations. Additionally, the growing interest in sulfate-free and mild surfactants is altering market demand, prompting manufacturers to innovate and introduce alternative solutions. While AES continues to be a widely used surfactant, its long-term pricing trends will be shaped by evolving consumer preferences, regulatory changes, and advancements in chemical manufacturing technologies.
Supply chain challenges remain a key concern for the AES market. Disruptions in shipping routes, container shortages, and increased freight costs have impacted the availability and pricing of surfactants globally. The reliance on imported raw materials further exacerbates these challenges, particularly in regions where domestic production is limited. Companies are increasingly looking for ways to mitigate supply chain risks by diversifying sourcing strategies and investing in local production facilities. However, these adjustments often come with additional costs, which can influence the final pricing of AES products.
Looking ahead, the AES market is expected to experience steady growth, with price fluctuations driven by a combination of macroeconomic factors, raw material trends, and industry innovations. The transition toward more sustainable and bio-based surfactants is likely to have a long-term impact on pricing structures, as manufacturers balance environmental responsibility with cost efficiency. Additionally, regulatory developments in various regions, particularly those focused on reducing environmental impact and ensuring product safety, will continue to shape the AES market.
The increasing adoption of digital technologies in chemical supply chains and manufacturing processes may also contribute to greater pricing transparency and efficiency. Companies leveraging data analytics, automation, and predictive modeling can optimize production and distribution, potentially stabilizing AES prices in the future. However, external factors such as global economic conditions, trade policies, and energy prices will remain influential in determining market trends.
Ultimately, alkyl ether sulfates prices will continue to be shaped by a dynamic interplay of supply and demand, raw material costs, technological advancements, and regulatory landscapes. With the growing focus on sustainability, market participants must navigate evolving consumer expectations and environmental standards while ensuring competitive pricing and product performance. As the industry adapts to these changes, companies that invest in innovation, efficiency, and sustainable sourcing will be better positioned to manage price volatility and maintain a strong foothold in the global AES market.
