it looks a little like this -

She's fifteen when James Potter makes his first mark on her. Looks her dead in the eye and says 'if I didn't have a girlfriend I'd have tried to kiss you tonight'. And while she laughs it off in the moment, there's something about that - the first boy to ever speak to her in such a way, what it feels like to be desired. Feel wanted. It changes a person, it changes her.

Thanks for the tag, lovely @alittlebitofeverything23 :) here's a bit from chapter 32 of The Price We Pay...

“You weren’t in Ancient Runes,” she said, tilting her chin to try and catch his gaze. “You missed a thrilling lesson.”

He tried to smile, he really did, and her heart ached to see the effort it seemed to require. “Yeah?”

“Yeah,” she confirmed softly, and paused for a moment. “I was worried about you. Remus didn’t know where you were…”

James nodded, looking away again, this time out across to the horizon. “I’m sorry…”

Lily tucked her arm through his; it didn’t seem nearly enough, but it was a start. “It’s okay. Sirius gave me the map.”

At that, James managed a genuine smile, and something approximating a laugh. “Crikey, you got Padfoot to part with the map?” he asked, meeting her gaze again. “You must’ve been convincing.”

This has been stuck in my head ever since reading the little Jily/PJO mircofic by @alittlebitofeverything23 So, now I have to join in. With 600 words we also humbly offer this to @jilymicrofics though it might not quite fit a prompt.

Capture the flag was the highlight of camp activities and to James Potter, it was his whole life. He lived for the strategy and fights. It was thrilling! And as a son of Athena, he saw it as a way to honour his godly parent. Nothing quite came close to the pride he could feel swelling in his chest when they won. His offerings smelled extra fragrant on those nights.

He was one of the lucky ones. He had loving mortal parents who had always called him their miracle child. Their gift from the gods. They wrote to him and sent him care packages from home. Who had been sad to let him stay there when he got too old, too skilled. When dangerous things would come to interrupt their time together.

Then there was his brother for all intents and purposes. Sirius. From the moment they met, they were inseparable. Always by each other's side. Be it in battle or kitchen duty. They were half the noise coming from the Athena cabin and all the trouble.

Their third man came from the Apollo Cabin, shaggy-haired and warm like the sun itself. Always down for a laugh and best of all; remarkable foresight. Absolutely invaluable when planning anything. Where the other team went in blind, James trusted blindly in his friend's precognition.

Their quartet was rounded up by Peter, son of Demeter. Provider of snacks and deceptively sneaky despite his heavy footfalls. Always keen to listen to the whispers of the forest to give them an edge.

With the four of them, they never lost. Holding an incredible record of seven wins in a row. Until she showed up.

Lily arrived around the same time as them. But unlike the four boys remained unclaimed for a long time. Long enough that people started to speculate.

Some said she had to be a daughter of Apollo, picking up healing as easily as the senior campers. But Apollo never shied away from claiming his children. Especially not those as capable as her.

After hearing her scream and carry on at none other than James for pushing her into the lake, people decided Ares must be her father. The god of war did nothing, even when she broke James's precious winning streak.

Plenty of campers mentioned Aphrodite and Lily would laugh at them, flick her fizzy braids over her shoulder and walk away. A brave few even subtly asked Mr. D. why he had not claimed his daughter yet. But they would be laughed off the porch.

Whispers starting to go around the camp. Lily was a forbidden child, a daughter of Zeus himself. That is why she remained unclaimed. She was doomed to be Hermes's guest forever.

It was rare for a half-blood to be claimed by anything other than the Big 12. That no one seemed to figure it out, to see it coming.

Lily was claimed by Hecate. A child of magic itself. Fearsome on the battlefield and off.

To James, this meant one thing, and one thing alone. He needed her on his team. Partly because he believed that with real magic they would be utterly unstoppable. Which was accepted with a hum of agreeing voices during their strategy meeting.

Partly because he was convinced he could get the redhead to kiss him if she would only see how skilled he actually was. This he only brought up with his friends, who laughed at him.

Little did they know that, eventually, it was James who'd get the last laugh. Flag raised high in victory, he had captured it. Another victory under his belt.

Though no capture tastes as sweet as Lily who had captured his lips.

Okay so this year I am really trying to narrow my focus so this might be a short list!

Chapter 4 of if it's a crime, then i'm guilty.

'you know you'll be gone by the morning'. Friends/rivals with benefits au of my au (self-indulgence ftw!) 'but he's a little bit too far away' where they start sleeping together while they're cadets.

That's kind of it! I am determined to get into the really juicy parts of it's a crime this year, so am keeping the plot bunnies at bay. Speaking of juicy bits.

Things I'm Looking Forward To:

I mean it's barely a spoiler to say that of course James actually does remember Lily, and the scene where that is revealed is coming up this chapter. This is also the chapter where the 'm' rating is earned but those two scenes have absolutely nothing to do with each other. Such fun!

Also, because I was tagged in a snippet tag, have a snippet!

In her defence, it wasn’t just the wig that did it. She made it through the first hour or so of the trial relatively unscathed, taking notes on the court’s procedures and the opening argument of the lawyer representing the claimant. There were, perhaps, a few glimpses at James in quiet moments, resulting in some objective observations that yes, the crisp, stark lines of his jabot did play nicely against his sharp jaw, or yes, there was something about the contrast between the tight, ordered curls of his powdered wig and the inky mess of his hair that was inordinately compelling. But still, nothing untoward. Then came James’s opening statement.

2. I'm really excited to revisit the absolutely shocking communication skills of 'a little bit too far away' jily. god i love them.

The two men stare at each other for a moment as a silent conversation seemingly happens before Lily’s eyes, punctuated at last by her husband’s heavy sigh. His shoulders seem to relax ever-so-slightly and the tension in his jaw slackens. “That would mean a great deal, Sirius,” Lord Potter nods, quickly glancing over at Lily. She’s not sure if it’s an invitation or prompt to speak, but the look in his eyes encourages her nonetheless as she moves her gaze to his friend. “Yes, that’s a very kind offer. Thank you.”

Eyes from Chapter 1 of my first war AU WIP, in the latter days:

The picture doesn’t move, which he’d had to get used to, but in the months immediately after The Fall—and especially in the summer of ‘84—James had rather preferred it. A moment in time, frozen, instead of being able to watch her face color with laughter as she swatted his chest. Instead of being able to sit and stare, obsessively, as the light in her green eyes twinkled as she looked at the camera. The liveliness in her he’d loved so much distilled into a single frame, instead of taunting him in a way he’d never see again.

1. i mostly put down just the dialogue for the first scene in the blood bank au, but quite enjoyed it! im also looking forward to writing the actual scene that inspired it, where they're like stuck in a car in the snow lol

2. when i finally get to the point where jily reunites in 'let's fall apart' !! my block on that is mostly just the period right before where lilys just being angsty and i want to get past that soon

3. there's a scene in my mind for 'play that warm chord' where lilys painting in the garden in a swimsuit and james is watching her lol it's quite vivid in my mind for no reason

4. this would be my first literati fic so i'm excited to write from new povs! and it'll follow a lot of canon but through a slightly different lens, and i think that'll be fun. also angst!

5. for 'slow like honey' mostly i'm excited to just get drunk on a bunch of red wine one night and write some sensual loving smut lmao

Nine books I’m excited to read in 2024!

thanks for tagging me, @unknowableroom 😘 it's actually quite difficult for me to plan what i'm going to read in a year - but these books released fairly recently are on my to-read list, hopefully i manage to read some of them, or at least in-between reading classics and a bunch of non-fiction.
