This is an old thread but I will say that Mia did actually tell Alison and Will that she didn't want anything elaborate, just something chill. So it's not even that Mia didn't make her wishes clear and they were working blindly (which is a recurring situation in the show), she does this time and they don't take it seriously. And granted, they likely have different definitions to Mia regarding what is/isn't elaborate or chill, but after the events of the first party and the house party, I can't help but think that putting Mia in an environment with lots of people and alcohol is obviously not a good idea.

I think this idea of "Alison is not self-centred because she keeps prioritising Mia" is kind of missing the point because in Alison's pursuit to be Mia's no. 1, she is actually being self-centered. From episode 1, she inserts herself into the group despite a lukewarm (if not cold) reaction, and here is her first interaction with Mia:

Alison: Mia! I didn't know you were back today.

Mia: Uh, yeah. I guess it was time to-

Alison: Great, great! (sits down)

Alison then proceeded to be insensitive towards Mia - looking for details about her stay in the mental hospital, comparing Mia's anorexia to an (exaggerated) anecdote about Polos - and at the party, she puts pressure on Mia to have three shots despite Mia being on medication. And obviously she's not being malicious when she does this, but her intentions don't change the fact that she continues to make Mia (and her friends) uncomfortable and even puts Mia's recovery at risk.

The moments where Alison does help Mia doesn't mean that as a whole she's a good girlfriend or even a good friend to Mia, not when they're interwoven with moments where she doesn't help Mia or actively makes things worse. If Alison is really paying close attention to Mia (and had a healthy understanding about Mia's boundaries), then she'd pick up on the fact that Mia doesn't really like her (and perhaps trust that Mia's close friends might be a better support than she can be), but she's idealised Mia in a way that she needs to be Mia's champion, which of course blows up in her face when she asserts that self-image in an Instagram post.

Alison really liking Mia and Alison being a deeply self-centered person who didn’t see how the party she threw for her girlfriend neither had anyone Mia knew and made her supremely uncomfortable can, and do, coexist in the show.

Mia being a difficult person to be friends with and Mia trying to do the right thing can and do coexist in said show.

Alison being a good girlfriend but ultimately not paying attention to what makes Mia comfortable and Alison absolutely deserving better can and do coexist in the show.

Carli and Cam using each other to get over the person they actually like and Carli and Mia’s kiss hurting Cam can and do coexist in the show.

Theo feeling absolutely smothered to constantly be the only one their parents don’t worry about and Theo wanting to protect his older sister and be there for her can and do coexist.

It’s worth taking a step back to emphasise just how extraordinary the lack of access to water is. There is not a shortage of water. Sure, regionally speaking, there are shortages, but not at a global level. It also doesn’t take a genius to get access to water or move it from A to B. The UN estimates it costs $60 to $70 per year per person to get the infrastructure in place for potable water and sanitation to everyone. A sum that pales in comparison with that spent bailing out the banks in 2008, for example. So it’s in that context that we should look at these new technologies. Desalination of water has been around for a long time. You boil salty water, it’s that simple. However, what has happened over the past 20 or 30 years or so, is desalination is increasingly seen as an environmentally friendly, safe and cheap way to get almost an abundant supply of water. Sea water is in great abundance, it is not owned by anyone for the time being, you can suck up as much as you want of it and not pay for it. Of course, desalination at scale is not ecologically friendly. Desalination takes a gargantuan amount of energy. It’s true that the costs per unit for energy production have gone down, but it’s still very energy intensive. It also takes significant infrastructure to suck the water from the sea, which has an adverse impact on marine wildlife and ecologies, as well as producing highly saline and toxic leftover waste. There’s no way to recycle this so it often ends up back in the sea or stored on land, in barrels somewhere. These technologies are also often used to defuse or, more accurately, sidestep political disputes. Take Spain, for example. Water access and distribution is difficult in the south of Spain, while people from Catalonia or Aragon generally speaking don’t want to share their groundwater with those from other regions. Desalination is an easy answer. Let’s get to the sea, extract free water, there’s no contestation. This all falls under what I’ve called a ‘productionist logic’, we need to get more of the stuff to carry on doing what we are already doing. This perpetuates a logic of reproduction that does not consider the structures of demand: who’s using it, under what conditions etc… It helps us escape considering the contradictions of current demands.

Maybe in the serendipity au Regulus was the first death eater sent to spy on Harry's island and he was just like, wait you're the Potter welp, my brother's godson, nope that's it I'm never leaving now, it's gonna be so funny when Sirius finds out about this! No note or communications whatsoever. Voldemort and the death eaters think he's been captured or killed and send Malfoy to assess the, clearly dangerous, situation and find Regulus running a cafe in the main district serving tea, scones, and little cucumber sandwiches to the new dark lord himself!

Well, maybe not a cafe, but I can certainly see Regulus infiltrating Alimia with the intention of feeding information back to Voldemort - only the longer he looks around the more he likes it.

Once he figures out this mysterious leader is Sirius’ missing godson, it just gets more hectic and hilarious from his perspective. So he decides to stay because he’s always been a bit of a drama whore underneath his icy masks and prickling personality.

Harry, who barely cares about things on a good day, doesn’t particularly mind that he’s got a Death Eater running around his island - so long as he’s not jeopardising their security, it’s fine by him. They hit it off, weirdly enough, and before long Regulus and Harry are pretty solid friends. Eventually, I could see Regulus comparing Harry and Voldemort as Dark Lord and then just casually strolling over to Harry’s side.

Almost like a reverse adoption? Instead of Harry picking Regulus, Regulus picks Harry.
