listen I love stede a lot - I think he's the bravest character in the show. he changes everyone he meets for the better. he embodies what I think of as the thesis of the show. if he wasn't the way that he is, the show would not be very good, imo.

but in ep one he gives his pirate crew notes on the raid they just did as though they were a community theater troupe and his notes were 1) complimenting his own opening speech as "very inspiring" and 2) complaining that that the crew wasn't sufficiently enthusiastic about robbing two poor fisherman of a single plant.

during the raid his narration went "some men are born to be pirate captains, others learn on the job. me? well I'm a pretty solid mix of both" as though he has any idea what he's doing.

and AFTER the raid Olu has to gently point out to him that piracy isn't a game to the rest of the crew.

There's a reason that Rhys Darby was the only person capable of playing Stede without making him seem like a total dick. And I think that's bc Rhys was able to convey the idea that Stede's behavior in the first few eps is coming out of this deep sense of insecurity - he's doing some Stede-y things (flag making! paying the crew! bedtime stories!) that are great but he's also pretending to be this macho pirate captain who totally knows what he's doing. And it's the pretending that makes people cringe with second hand embarrassment. While also, often, seeing themselves in it and feeling a great deal of sympathy for Stede about it.

The reason Stede is like this is because HE thinks there's something deeply wrong with him, a belief that has been solidified by everyone around him his entire life, and therefore he needs to do everything he can to hide that deeply wrong thing about him. When he unpacks that and embraces the things about himself he originally thought were embarrassing (being weak, pathetic, soft, etc), he can stop pretending. And that's when other characters grow to love him! And so people will sometimes call him cringe because they aspire to be cringe like him, to embrace the parts of themselves that they were punished for and live more authentically.

because he changes! that's the point! he moves from cringe (pretending to be someone he's not) to cringe (being true to himself, always a deeply vulnerable thing to be) and it takes a lot of hard work. that's what makes me LIKE him as a character. that's what I think makes him the bravest character on the show. because he doesn't start out perfect. he's a puppet who grows into a real boy and that means that for a period of time he was a puppet, and that's okay.

I finally finished listening to The Cryptid Factor... was nobody gonna tell me Rhys has another podcast called Aliens Like Us? Well I found it and was inspired to make this comic. I like the idea of Stede being a bit Rhys-coded.

Description & text:

Ed and Stede are standing on the deck of The Revenge, stargazing. They see a comet. Stede says “Oh Ed, look!”, Ed replies “beautiful”. Suddenly, a UFO zips into view, Stede and Ed stare in shock and awe as colorful lights pulse around the ship. It only lasts a moment before the UFO is zipping away. Ed and Stede turn to each other and exclaim together “WHAT WAS THAT?”. Later, Stede is describing the event to Lucius while he does a painting of the UFO for documentation. Stede is saying “...green lights, Lucius! And then it zipped away so fast!”. Weeks later, Stede has become quite obsessed with seeing the strange flying ship again. He stares out at the night sky through a spyglass, hoping for a glimpse. Ed calls to him “Anything tonight, darling?” Stede replies “Not yet, love!”. End comic.

i fully recognize that this is a stupid hill to die on, but the whole "poor little rich boy" thing with stede in season 1 never really made that much sense to me. if it was something that izzy or spanish jackie or even the rest of the crew used to taunt him, i would get it — they're all lower class and it would make sense for them to assume an aristocrat who's decided to become a pirate a) has not faced any real hardships and b) has no useful skills. i can even kind of understand it from stede's dad, who has a feels like their child has an easier life than they did and is bitter about it vibe. but it doesn't make sense for stede's peers like the badmintons, who not only are also wealthy aristocrats but clearly take pride in that and are openly classist. if they were going to make fun of how much money stede had, it would be for having less of it than other aristocratic families (which i think is implied by his arranged marriage to mary for her family's land)

Oh, now that's interesting. The idea of extraterrestrial life has always intrigued me. I suppose it would depend a lot on their sexual mechanics.

Love the art, but the OFMD post is such a cringe take of you. A fictional historical show made to be a satire doesn't reflect people's sense of morality or ethics. People should be allowed to enjoy fiction without being condemned for it. While we're at it, why don't we shun people who enjoy- oh, I don't know - Harley Quinn or the Joker? They murder people. We've all just collectively agreed that murder is ok. Where do we draw the line? Why aren't you guilty of enjoying Batman. After all, he spends his time brutalizing people, and using dubious interrigation methods. I'll tell you why, because it doesn't matter. It's fiction, and people should be allowed to enjoy "good" narrative and interesting characters regarless of what it portrays, as long as they do it responsibly, and have the capacity to separate fiction and reality. Yeah OFMD is loosely based on real life people, but the keyword here is loosely. No one is out here sympathizing about the real Bonnet. They're sympathizing with a dumb character from a dumb fictional show. They're just actors running around in costumes on a fake boat in a set in front of cameras. It doesn't mean anything, no one is trying to change history, no one is trying to make a statement. There is literally nothing in it that's worth looking so closely into that people should feel bad for enjoying it. Google the definition of satire, and get over yourself. Anyways, nothing personal, I wish you well regardless

if you wanna enjoy the show ur just gonna have to sit with the discomfort that stede bonnet was a real person who owned real people and forces them to work for him. and real blackbeard sold those real people into forces labor.

So socially work is not great for me. Where I work is super clique-ish and I’m new (it’s also very “oh we’re open to new ideas” but every new idea you have is wrong and everything needs to be done their way). And this is for our holiday party (which I told myself I need to try to make an effort so I’m not just accepting the role of the outcast).

So basically I need to insist on being on Blackbeard’s team and even though it’ll probably alienate me more I then need to insist his beloved is Stede Bonnet and make it super gay and OFMD themed cause fuck it I need to enjoy myself somehow 🤣
