OC WEEK 2024

Day 7: Free Day

This is a day late (whoops sorry pride activities took all my free time), but here's the end to OC Week!

Figured I'd end the week with drawing my protagonists of my at-some-point-upcoming webcomic, to get a feel for how they vibe together. So meet Alfred and Raum!

Alfie is an American exorcist-in-training and the earthly Vessel of St. Michael. Raum is a wrath demon nobleman whose goal is to stop Alfred and company.

After Alfie botches Raum's exorcism, the two end up stuck together and an unlikely friendship blooms.

post-school school/career headcanons (non-exhaustive, will make a part two eventually), for your consideration:

nina goes to undergrad for literature with a concentration in creative writing. hasn't picked a medium yet, and regardless it's not like making it in screenwriting is that much easier than traditional publishing, so she writes by night and is an office temp by day (she is aware of the irony of being the "permanent new girl" as a job description. it was funny the first time someone pointed it out. the first time.)

fabian gets a bachelor's in history and immediately goes to grad school for...library/information science. he has to spend a good bit explaining to people that yes, that's a real major, and no, "the books don't start reacting with each other -- a science is a system of ideas, not just when something blows up." he works as a TA and is torn between if he wants to stay in academia or find more "practical" work (this is where i mention this is background work for a story where he goes back to the school to teach <3)

amber might go to a post-secondary fashion school, but even if she does, she's absolutely going for the connections and dropping out the second she gets an industry job, most likely in nyc (which considering how well off she is...probably didn't take long). idk she's thriving (though if she's surrounded by work/kind of by herself socially i could see her getting to a breaking point and claiming she needs roommates to afford rent (lie) just so she can have people around lol)

patricia actually DOES become a guidance counselor. LOL. i can't resist this one -- more specifically, i could see her going to a liberal arts undergrad without a direction in mind but knowing she "needs to figure one out," taking a couple psychology classes, realizing She Cares, declaring a major in psych, and after discounting the clinical track (too close to med school) and the research track (too creepy), she ends up working on an MA in social work

alfie seems like a guy who would have his fingers in like 5 different pies at all times -- depending on who he's talking to/if he feels he needs to impress them, he says one of the following: "business partner" (jerome's business -- more on that later -- alfie's more of an ideas/production guy than a """business guy""" but you don't need to know that if he's telling you this), freelance film crew (prop master/art department), Professional Artist (has a studio where he makes the stuff he uses for his various pursuits), comic author (i feel like he has a weird janky webcomic he makes for himself. i can't explain it. he has a couple thousand readers), etc. he's always picking up a new thing and finding a way to use it until he gets bored and does something else. he just tells his dad "jerome and i are making A Profit" to keep him off his back

speaking of jerome: i've always been fond of the idea that he and his dad go into business together at some point, so it'd be some sort of thing they could do together that alfie's artistic skills would be of use for. despite the fact that jerome very much would like to bend some rules here and there, his dad is not keen on the idea of going back to prison so unfortunately, no white collar crimes for him. (for now.) they're doing well all things considered, but jerome refuses to get a job to fund the business ("what's the point in doing all this if i'm going to let someone else be my boss anyway"), so he's definitely having to find creative ways to squeeze more money out of the business to, y'know. Survive

i'm not 100% settled on this joy idea but communications/PR? definitely gets her start somewhere more corporate, but i could see her getting creeped out by stuff she'd have to spin/help cover for, so she switches to nonprofit (which is also depressing, arguably moreso sometimes, but it's a bit easier to stomach). isn't directly involved in jerome's business, but she does "consult" (not without something in return. preferably, y'know. Money. but sometimes she starts a casual conversation without realizing she should have written up a contract first, and that's the only way that jerome will actually pay you)

i love webcomics can i recommend webcomics here. dumbing of age, which is a college au of the authors other works that's updated daily for thirteen years with a fantastic cast of realistically complex characters. shoot around, a comic about a bunch of queer teenage girls and their basketball coach surviving the apocalypse. order of the stick, a long-running comedy/drama story taking place in the world of dungeons and dragons about a group of absurdly different personalities all trying to work together to take out a really obnoxious lich. go get a roomie, a slow and semi-funny semi-serious romance between a depressed narcoleptic girl and the extroverted hippie that walks into her life- and her house. manly guys doing manly things, a comedy about an over the top masculine video game protagonist stereotype who runs a rehabilitation/support group for other masculine protagonists who can't adjust to everyday life. Alfie, an erotic fantasy comic about a girl from a halfling village realizing her interest in women and going out to explore the world and her sexuality. and idk if youve heard of this really good vampire comic, bloodsuckers,

Oh man i havent caught up with Go Get a Roomie in soooo loooong!! The art was gorgeous and i love a slutty lesbian deadbeat protag who everyone loves anyway. And dumbing of age is one of those ive been meaning to get into for a while, unfortunately my brain got caught by questionable content as my insanely long slice of life gag a day comics vice. Ty for the reccs!!!

Nostalite Worldbuilding

This is a world I’ve been developing on and off for around a decade now, and thanks to people over at CCC I decided to get it written down/illustrated properly! Thanks to @starvingautist and @a-carinaecer for the prompts/questions! This is only concepts at the moment, but Nostalite is a comic series I plan to work on once I’ve got started with Tenrec Hero!  More work I’ve done with this group can be found on my tag for it! Any feedback is really helpful for me!!!

In the world of Nostalite, powerful stones called Nostalites are sought after by explorers due to their ability to bestow various powers upon the holder. Likely due to the presence of a physical soul, humans have the innate ability to sense nostalites if they are close by. If untrained, this ability only allows people to sense a nostalite if it's right in front of them, though hunters with frequent exposure can expand their sensing radius to make nostalite hunting easier. There are several different types of nostalite, such as bastionite (assembles armor out of nearby materials), remedite (heals injuries), geminite (creates duplicates of objects... and people). They're split into categories depending on how powerful they are.

Nostalites use the energy from human souls, causing users to become exhausted quickly while using their power - if overused, people will pass out in order for the soul to recover. 

Not much is known of the origins of nostalites, but if given the entirety of a person’s soul, it will become a source of new nostalites. In the past, the sick and elderly would go to nostalite sources to pass away, with the belief that their soul would be of use to others in the future. Since nostalite sources are difficult to move, and the landscape around them began to be affected (deep forests, bottomless pits, storms) Nostalite Guilds would be formed around them by treasure hunters, and towns and cities would form around the guilds. In time, guild rivalries would turn into feuds, and feuds would become wars. After so much conflict, the old guilds were vacated.

In modern day, nostalite hunters still gather into guilds in their exploration, though there are several laws enforced to prevent widespread conflict:

Guilds may not be formed around nostalite sources. 

Each hunter may only carry up to 3 nostalites at one time.

Additionally, a hunter may carry up to 6 single-use nostalite shards.

People are forbidden from using human souls to grow new nostalites. 

It is also illegal to attempt to pass away near a source.

Many cities forbid entry to people carrying nostalites.

In smaller towns and cities, while carrying nostalites is not illegal, it’s advised against, as it attracts aggressive manikins (nostalite creatures).

Newer guilds are often formed in places where sources used to be, such as Ringwood Guild - placed on the edge of the deep Ringwood Forest. Due to the comparative shortage of nostalites, for many people nostalite hunting is merely a hobby or source of income. There are many hunters that seek the adventure, fame and fortune the Old Guilds would bring, but that is no longer a reality. Many of the abandoned Old Guilds are still standing, though they are abandoned, and mostly infested by manikins, and are mostly avoided.

there’s loadsa sorts of nostalites like pyrokinesis, psychokinesis, soul-swapping, shield generation, eletrokinesis, etc 

I decided not to have anything like resurrection nostalites, although in rare cases remedite can be used to revive someone in the short time between the death, and the point their soul disappears 

the powers can be used creatively, depending on how each person wants it to manifest. for say, Geminite (duplication stone), most people use it to clone objects, though it can be used to create a decoy double 

 the levels are basically separated by how powerful they are, nostalite gradually deteriorate over time unless they are ��fed” souls, slowly becoming shards 

there aren’t any illegal nostalite 

guilds are like little hubs, there’s usually a tavern, training area, equipment stall, and nostalite trading. guild membership is required to enter a guild, though it’s up to a guildmaster whether a person is allowed membership. Nostalite hunters can choose not to join a guild, though it’s beneficial to do so due to the facilities (and it’s better for keeping track of hunters in the area) 

if a nostalite source is found, it is required by law to report it to the nearest guild, who will break it down into level 3 stones and sell it 

manikins (nostalite creatures) are also drawn to nostalites, and will attack hunters for them - this prevents nostalite from being found too frequently, as manikins can be very formidable
