From 1893 onwards, Camilla studied at the drawing school of the women’s earnings association in Vienna under Rudolf Geyling and took private lessons in the studios of Olga Wisinger-Florian and Alexander Demetrius Goltz. After graduating in 1896, Göbl-Wahl exhibited for the first time in the Vienna Künstlerhaus. Four years later, she founded her own painting school, a student's studio. Around 1920, she taught at a public girls' lycée. After numerous group exhibitions in the Vienna Künstlerhaus and in the Glaspalast Munich, her first solo exhibition took place in the Glashaus Vienna in 1937. Camilla Göbl-Wahl was also a member of several associations, including the "Wiener Frauenkunst", the "Parnass" and the "Verein der Schriftstellerinnen und Künstlerinnen", which she headed as its 9th president from 1948 until her death in 1965.

Hildegard Burjan wurde als Tochter von Abraham und Berta Freund in eine liberale jüdische Familie geboren. Die Familie übersiedelte nach Berlin und später nach Zürich, wo Hildegard nach der Matura Literatur und Philosophie studierte. Während ihres Studiums lernte sie christliches Gedankengut kennen, war aber noch weit davon entfernt, glauben zu können. 1907 heiratete sie den Technikstudenten Alexander Burjan, einen Ungarn jüdischer Abstammung, mit dem sie nach Berlin übersiedelte. 1909 wurde sie schwer nierenkrank, die Ärzte hatten sie schon aufgegeben, doch wie durch ein Wunder überlebte sie. Durch diese existenzielle Erfahrung und die aufopfernde Pflege der Barmherzigen Schwestern vom hl. Karl Borromäus, deren Hingabe aus dem Glauben heraus sie beeindruckte, wandte sie sich der katholischen Kirche zu und wurde am 11. August 1909 getauft. Von da an suchte sie in ihrem Leben den Willen Gottes zu erfüllen.

Im selben Jahr übersiedelte das Paar nach Wien, wo Alexander eine leitende Aufgabe übernahm und Hildegard schnell Anschluss an katholische Kreise fand, besonders an die, die sich mit der Sozialenzyklika Rerum Novarum Papst Leos XIII. auseinandersetzten. 1910 brachte sie unter Lebensgefahr ihr einziges Kind, ihre Tochter Elisabeth, zur Welt, worauf eine lange Krankheit folgte; die Ärzte hatten ihr dringend zur Abtreibung geraten, doch Hildegard verweigerte dies. Schon bald begann sie sich sozial zu engagieren, besonders setzte sie sich für schutzlose und unterbezahlte Frauen ein. 1912 gründete sie den "Verband der christlichen Heimarbeiterinnen", um sie zur Selbsthilfe anzuleiten und ihre Rechte zu stärken. Dabei verstand sie es, Mitarbeiterinnen und Unterstützung auch in sozial hochstehenden Schichten zu gewinnen. Bald wurde ihre Tätigkeit weithin bekannt, man nannte sie "Mutter der Heimarbeiterinnen".

1918 führte sie in dem Verein "Soziale Hilfe" alle Arbeiterinnenvereine zusammen. Am 4. Oktober 1919 schließlich gründete sie die Schwesterngemeinschaft Caritas Socialis (CS)., die sich bis heute vielfältigen karitativen Aufgaben widmet, u.a. Pflegeheime und ein Hospiz unterhält und sich in der Ausbildung zu sozialen Berufen engagiert. Hildegard Burjan, die immer bestrebt war, das Übel der sozialen Not an der Wurzel zu packen, engagierte sich nun auch politisch. Ab 1918 war sie aktiv im provisorischen Gemeinderat für die christlich-soziale Partei, ab 1919 war sie die einzige weibliche Abgeordnete - die Frauen hatten gerade erst das Wahlrecht erhalten - der christlich-sozialen Partei in der  Konstituierenden Nationalversammlung. Dort suchte sie über Parteigrenzen hinweg Zustimmung für ihre sozialen Reformprojekte zu finden. Ihr kompromissloses Eintreten für die sozial Schwachen brachte ihr den Titel "Gewissen des Parlaments" ein. 1920 schied sie aus der Politik wieder aus, um sich uneingeschränkt ihrer Schwesterngemeinschaft und den sozialen Aufgaben widmen zu können. In vielem war sie ihrer Zeit weit voraus, setzte sich ein für die rechtliche Gleichstellung der Frauen und gerechte Bezahlung ("Gleicher Lohn für gleiche Leistung"). Sie arbeitete und organisierte Hilfe für ledige Mütter, Familien in Not, Obdachlose, Ausgegrenzte.

Ihre Nierenkrankheit, an der sie immer litt, aber durch die sie sich nie an ihrem ungeheuren Arbeitseinsatz hindern ließ, führte zu ihrem frühen Tod mit nur fünfzig Jahren. 

Am 29. 1. 2012 wurde sie im Wiener Stephansdom selig gesprochen.

Is this late? Yes. Do I care? No.

Robertson laid upside down on the bed, staring at his alarm clock. He had set it to go off just before midnight, but if his plan worked out he wouldn’t need it.

His plan was to stay up until midnight to ring in the New Year. Considering his age it shouldn’t have been a problem. But “early to bed and early to rise” was his saying, and the Scot often found it hard to stay awake past eleven P.M. He’d fall asleep after the matches finished, and if he knew a match may extend past eleven, he’d sleep two hours more than usual. He guessed that was why Milner loved matches with extra time.

But 2022 had brought Robertson two trophies, the Scottish assists record, and MBE. And he fully intended to celebrate—past midnight.

It was three o’clock now, and the Liverpool New Year’s Eve party would start in a few hours. Robertson had skipped his FIFA session with Alexander-Arnold to try and catch some sleep, but nothing he tried could get him to take a nap. He’d stayed up late the night before worrying about if he’d stay up late tonight, and his sleep schedule was very thrown off.

 “I will stay awake,” he promised himself, pinching his cheek. “I will stay awake.”

Maybe Baccara will help me stay awake. Robertson connected his phone to the wireless speakers and clicked on his Spotify playlist. Disco music filled the room, and Robertson couldn’t help but dance in his seat.

A familiar face peered around the corner, wearing a distinctive scowl. It was James Milner, one of the most sarcastic and grumpiest members of the whole squad. He was also polar opposites with Robertson. He hated oatmeal cookies, he hated Scottish flags, he hated kilts…

To make a long story short, if Robertson liked something there was a good chance Milner hated it. In fact, there were very few things Milner actually liked. One of them was grouching the heck out of Robertson.

And this particular trait, the Scot thought, just may get me over the line.

“Milly, mate!” Robertson leapt off the bed, pouncing on Milner. “How are you? Like the music?”

He knew that Milner hated the music. But it wouldn’t hurt to get under his skin some more.

“Baccara? I hate that music,” Milner huffed. “What are you doing, lad? Everybody else is getting ready for the New Year’s party.”

“Trying to get some sleep,” Robertson confessed. “I want to stay up past midnight but we all know my problem with that.”

Milner snorted, turning off the speakers. “What if you turned off that god-awful music and then I show you how to really stay awake?”

Robertson shrugged, slipping his phone in his pocket and following Milner. “Okay.”

Milner didn’t like New Year’s at all. Why, nobody knew. Perhaps it was because the New Year was just as much of a dumpster fire as the old one.

Whatever the reason, Milner found this as the perfect opportunity to get Robertson to behave. If Robertson was busy working his butt off, he couldn’t get into mischief, which meant the Yorkshireman could finally get some much-craved peace and quiet.

So Milner dumped Robertson into the kitchen, where giant trays of mini-wieners and pre packaged pastry lay on the counters. They would soon become just one of the appetizers for the New Year’s party.

“I could use your help in the kitchen,” Nemmer said once Milner was gone. “I need to roll all these crescent wieners before three-thirty so I can get started on the crudités platters. I love parties, but it’s the food preparation that kills my feet.”

Robertson didn’t need to hear any more. He grabbed the giant pot of boiled chickpeas and the food processor, setting up one counter. “I’ll make the mummies. No, I meant lummus. No no no, I meant…”

“I get it.” Nemmer was already busy rolling the sixth crescent wiener. “Now get to it! We still have to mix the drinks.”

By the time Robertson finally left the kitchen, it was a quarter to five. The party would start at six-thirty, and everything seemed ready. The auditorium was decorated with gold, black and silver decorations, Tsimikas was in charge of the music—Milner had specifically made a “no original or rap songs” rule—and he had his outfit ready. He was going to twin with Alexander-Arnold, wearing matching black tuxedos and gold bowties.

He disappeared into the shower and came out feeling refreshed. He slipped into his tuxedo and shoes and started to strut out of the shower—until he realized he hadn’t shaved yet.

He reached for the set of razors that was supposed to be on the counter. His hand found nothing, and with a start he realized that the razors were gone.

Who could’ve stolen his razors? As far as Robertson knew everybody had their own. And they didn’t borrow each other’s razors either.

A small piece of paper caught his eye. Robertson pulled it out of the cabinet and found his razor, along with a note:

Remember to shave. Any facial hair kept past October is unlucky if you’re from the UK. Hope you fall asleep at 11:59. Milner.

Robertson shook his head in amusement, pocketing the note. Milner could really be a spoilsport sometimes.

“Isn't this exciting, Milly?” Robertson whisper-shouted into Milner’s ear. He and Milner lay on a blanket in the training pitch along with the rest of the team, watching the fireworks go off in the sky. “In my old team we’d never do this fun stuff.”

Milner rolled his eyes, elbowing him. Robertson took it as a sign of affection. “I must admit, this isn’t too bad.”

“Ready for the big ones?” Kornmayer asked, setting up the cannons. Everyone had received a welcome surprise when the assistant manager revealed that he had a license to work with pyrotechnics. “Let’s hear it for the New Year!”

Robertson could feel himself dozing off before they’d reached fifty seconds on the countdown. Just before he fell asleep, he felt a handful of snow getting shoved down his back.

The fireworks exploded, bursting in red and gold and silver. Among the cheers, one quiet, heavily accented voice stood out from all the rest.

“Happy New Year, Andy.”

The 356A (T2) Speedster was introduced in September 1957 and continued until the basic Speedster was replaced by the Convertible D in August 1958 although a number of Carrera, GS and GT Speedsters were produced in 1959.

Ferdinand Porsche and the foundation of the Porsche Company

Ferdinand Porsche was born on September 3rd 1875, in the Bohemian village of Maffersdor. After attending grammar school and Staatsgewerbeschule (State Vocational School) in Reichenberg, he entered his father's metalworking business. The young and imaginative Ferdinand pursued a fascination with electricity working on the design of an electric car and in 1900 The Lohner-Porsche electric car is presented at the World Fair in Paris. Porsche's wheel hub engines brought the young engineer international attention. In the same year, he developed an all-wheel-drive racecar, as well as a hybrid petrol/electric vehicle.

In 1906 Ferdinand Porsche became Technical Director at Austro-Daimler in Wiener Neustadt. At the age of only 31, he became responsible for the model range of one of Europe's largest automotive concerns.

In September1909 Ferdinand's first son, Ferdinand Anton Ernst Porsche, later known as 'Ferry', was born. In 1910 The Austro-Daimler touring car designed by Ferdinand Porsche scores a triple victory in the Prince Henry Trials.

In 1923 as Technical Director and Board Member of the Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft in Stuttgart, Ferdinand Porsche was responsible for the design of the legendary Mercedes Compressor Sports Car and in the following year, he led the development of the 2-litre racecar won the Targa Florio. The Mercedes-Benz S-Type models dominate international motorsport from 1927.

In 1931 Ferdinand Porsche founded the company that bears his name "Dr. Ing. h. c. F. Porsche GmbH" to provide 'engineering and consultation on engine and vehicle design'. Based in Stuttgart the company carried out projects for manufacturers such as as Wanderer, Zündapp and NSU. In 1933 Porsche developed a Grand Prix mid-engined 16-cylinder racecar for Auto Union. He also developed a rear engined compact vehicle concept for NSU.

One year later the Porsche company received an official order for the design and construction of a German 'Peoples Car' or Volkswagen. The prototype was developed and assembled in the garage of the Porsche villa in Stuttgart and was road tested within 12 months At the same time production facilities were being set up for the Volkswagen which was officially called the 'KdF-Wagen'.

In December 1935 Ferdinand Alexander Porsche the first son of Ferry Porsche (and later known as 'Butzi') was born in Stuttgart.

During 1939 Porsche developed 3 racing coupés for long-distance endurance competition. These 'Berlin­Rome-Wagens' could be considered the forerunners of later Porsche sports cars.

He also designed the Mercedes T-80 in1939 to conquer the world land speed record. It was reputed to have a 3000 hp aircraft engine.

Because of the outbreak of the second world war Volkswagen production was diverted towards the military version of the Beetle, the Kübelwagen and Schwimmwagen. Only 1207 Volkswagen KdFs were built between 1941 and 1944

Porsche also designed several heavy tanks but did not get the production contract. Towards the end of the war the Porsche Engineering office moved to the relative safety of Gmünd in the Austrian province of Carinthia.

After the war the Volkswagen factory at Wolfsburg was taken over by the British and Ferdinand Porsche was arrested and imprisoned in France for 20 months.

In 1946 under the direction of Ferdinand Porsche's son Ferry, the Porsche Engineering office became involved in the design of an all-wheeldrive Grand Prix racecar for an Italian industrialist, Piero Dusio.

Ferry Porsche saw a market for a small, light two seater roadster and was unable to find a car in the market that matched his preference. He decided to build a car which became the first 356 and the first sportscar to bear the Porsche name.

Misrepresentation of Women in Mean Girls

“You can’t sit with us!” - Gretchen Wieners

Hi everyone!

Today’s post will be discussing a classic comedy film, Mean Girls (2004), that follows the life of a teenager named Cady Heron navigating through high school social hierarchy after years of homeschooling. She unwittingly finds her way into an elite group of popular students, “The Plastics” which consists of Regina George, Gretchen Wieners, and Karen Smith but soon realizes how shallow this new set of friends were. While this film offers memorable scenes and famous quotes, Mean Girls explores the misrepresentation and disempowerment of teenage girls in the media.

The motion pictures happen to capture pop culture patterns in male dominance by placing men at the centre of the plot line. By placing men at the pinnacle of the story, the movie illustrates traditional gender stereotypes of hyper-femininity. The movie emphasizes girls being seen as desperate and submissive for male validation, malicious and envious towards other female characters. When Cady tells Regina that she had a crush on her ex-boyfriend, Aaron. Regina becomes envious and avenges her by kissing Aaron in front of her. This relates to disempowerment because many of these women are not supportive of each other and become competitive for their own personal gain.

The movie highlights how women are expected to meet these social expectations as well as engage in the negative effects of having to fit in. For instance, when Cady is invited to sit with the Plastics, she mentions how it feels to enter the “girls' world.” Gretchen explains the rules to Cady on how to assimilate into the group such as only wearing your hair in a ponytail once a week, and only wearing jeans or track pants on Friday. They are portrayed where they are deeply concerned with their appearance and are expected to conform to women's beauty standards, such as wearing makeup, staying up to date with fashion trends, wearing revealing clothing, and being skinny. Moreover, often colour is used as a symbol in some sort of way. When the Plastics are seen wearing pink every Wednesday, it can symbolize femininity, kindness, and love. This colour plays a role in gender as women are expected to be girly, kind, and submissive. In the readings of Alexander Sink and Dana Mastro, Depictions of Gender on Primetime Television: A Quantitative Content Analysis (2017), they explain how “women are largely defined to a narrow set of roles on television that emphasize sexuality, idealized beauty standards, and gender stereotypic occupations/lifestyles” (p. 6). Meaning that the media is able to depict what type of characters they will pursue in order to fit their narrative.

With the Plastics having a reputation for bullying and mean demeanour towards others, provokes the idea of dominance and exclusion to the group. They would tell little white lies, makeup rumours, gossip, and have ulterior motives towards each other. The movie displays multiple instances when the girls would devalue each other by referring to another girl as a “slut” or “whore” ultimately normalizing the use of using derogatory terms amongst both genders. In addition, many of the girls in the film would use these derogatory words in friendships to belittle and dismiss each other without realizing how negatively it affected the friend. The authors in Depictions of Gender on Primetime Television: A Quantitative Content Analysis, state that “media exposure has been linked with a wide range of negative outcomes including acceptance of dysfunctional relationship beliefs” (p. 4). Consequently, allowing women to adapt to friendships that are not healthy.

At the end of the day, Mean Girls is a comedy and not seriously analyzed by many of its average audience, but it does present problematic issues related to gender roles and misrepresentation in the media.
