Confession:
I wish more books had the option to kill the annoying LIs like KCD. Maybe if I could gut Alexander Chasingyou myself I would actually finish the story

Alexander: When I get murdered, can you make sure no one solves the case? Rachel: What? Alexander: I want to be on Buzzfeed Unsolved. Rachel: Can we go back to the part where you said 'when I get murdered'?

🖊 give me the original character information
the worst part of this was having to choose who i was gonna talk about how dare you /j
Story: Farewell, Fairwell
Character: Percival Fairwell (he/him)
(Synopsis: Darius Pembroke, a private detective in a version of 1908 Norwich where creatures of myth are commonplace, is hired by the Evans family to investigate a long time rival of his, Percival Fairwell, who might be involved in the disappearance of their daughter. As his investigation advances, Darius discovers Percy's lycanthropy, and starts to blackmail him. Percy, in response, discovers that Darius is a vampire, and as their rivalry grows, they are also the only other person who knows of their secret, and are forced to ask each other for help, and learn to trust each other, as the actual reason for the Evans daughter's disappearance opens up old wounds in Percy's past.)
the rest of the stuff is under the cut cuz this got REALLY long (partially cuz this is three characters, not one but i love them so much can you blame me)

Percival (Peredur) Eirwyn Fairwell:
Percival is a Welsh werewolf who moved from Swansea, Wales, to Norwich a handful of years before the start of the story (prior to 1902). There, he builds a career as a private investigator, making friends with a (human) woman named Ivy Leslie Hawkins, and eventually they move in together - partially to avoid any gossip as to why they weren't married this late into their 20s. They aren't romantically involved at all, and Percy is gay. Upon visiting a tailor's shop in 1903, he meets a "woman" (not out trans man, Alexander), who he befriends. Eventually, Alex trusts him enough to admit that he's a boy, and wants to be called Alexander instead. They become closer, Percy's connections across Norwich allowing him to to cash in on multiple favours to help Alex transition, like having his hair cut without questioning or making a binding corset, and Alex tailors his own suit for the first time. Percy falls in love, and he falls in love hard. He doesn't think he's ever loved a man more than he loves Alex. Even when he admits his lycanthropy to him, Alexander is far from scared of the three meter werewolf in front of him. Across different full moons, Alex manages to convince Percy that he is not the violent werewolf he thinks himself as. He removes the silver chains Percy uses every full moon, and even convinces him to start spending full moon nights in their townhouse in Norwich instead of a broken down shed in the outskirts of the city. Alexander understands Percy in a way no one else ever has. For his birthday in March 1906, he gifts Percy a locket with a picture of Alex, with "I love you" engraved in three languages on the inside (Welsh for Percy, French for Alex, English for the two of them). Alexander's birthday in November 1906 falls right after a rough full moon, where Percy accidentally hurts both himself and Alex. Unable to go to the jeweller's to pick up his gift for Alex, and the pharmacy for supplies they ran out of, Alex goes there instead, and disappears on the way to the pharmacy, after having picked up Percy's gift for him: a matching locket to his own, with a picture of Percival inside. Percival is devastated, and Alex's parents, who have never accepted their son as who he is, blame him for Alex disappearing.
What happens after is the actual Farewell, Fairwell story, but pretty much a rival private investigator (Darius Pembroke) moves into Norwich, and is hired by the Evans family to prove that Percy is responsible for their daughter's Alex's disappearance. Darius figures out Percy is a werewolf, and holds it over his head, until Percy figures out Darius is a vampire. They keep going for months, finding bits of information to one-up the other. However, despite being enemies, the other is also the person who knows the most about them, and they have to trust each other when they need (such as when Darius runs out of blood). Over these months, Darius no longer thinks Percy is guilty of Alex's disappearance, and instead starts suspecting the Evans family.
I'm gonna stop there for the plot, there's things that happen afterwards that I'm gonna mention/imply next but :3 we stay silly
I really really like percival because of how complicated he is as a character. For instance, how much he changes upon moving to Norwich (modifying his accent and name so people are less likely to clock him as Welsh), how he changes after meeting Alex (softening up, caring, loving someone, no longer being scared of the Wolf in his head), how Alex's disappearance affects him (suffocating with grief, blaming himself, blaming the Wolf), yet he still pulls himself together, what facade he puts up after meeting Darius (hiding his past with Alex, pretending not to be broken), the moment he sees Alex again in that cramped attic and how much yet how little his demeanor changes once he realises Alexander doesn't remember him, helping Alex escape and heal, loving him again, losing him again, grieving, letting himself heal from that grief, and let himself love again. On the "Love again" part: Percy loves Alex and Percy loves Darius and those relationships changed him, and even if he loved Alex first, and even if Darius is who he ends up by the end of the story, neither relationship is any better than the other and he'll still love Alex, and he'll still love Darius.
Percival seems to share so much about himself to Darius (mentioning the night his father tried to kill him, slowly opening up about Alex and even making Darius refer to him properly even if it means giving up a piece of information about Darius that would give him the upper hand in their convoluted game), yet there's so much Darius can't figure out. Despite this openness, Darius refuses to share information about his past back, and Percy does not make him. He simply mentions once that everyone that has stepped foot in his house was running away from something or other, and that they all have their own story behind it.
Also this is a small detail i really like about him, but Percy wears the locket Alex gave him under his clothes every day, and even on full moons!!
Here's a handful of quotes from two bits of writing as a bonus because i think they explain percy and how darius seems him best!!
"Percy had shut himself in soon after he realised Alexander didn’t remember him, or seemingly anything outside of that damp and cramped attic. But he had gotten a glimpse of another Percival in the moments before that realisation. He had smiled, actually smiled, a different smile than the ones he had seen him give Ivy, friendly and joking, a different smile than the ones he had given Darius, proud smirks and sarcastic grins. A part of himself Darius refused to acknowledge ached at the thought that he’d never be on the receiving end of one of those smiles, the ones that were clearly reserved for Alexander. Not only that, his entire body had softened when he opened that door. Some of that grief and stress that Percival carried with him, a version of him that was all Darius had ever known, had disappeared."
"Somehow, despite their constant back and forth, lying and betrayal, Fairwell is able to tell that, this time, Darius is telling the truth."
"Percival knows Darius won’t say anything about it to anyone else. It’s the same game they’ve played for months. They hold cards, pieces of information, that could ruin the other’s life, but if they show it to someone else, the other will do the same. Darius might be holding this card, able to ruin Percy’s life and love with one meeting, but he doesn’t care about having the upper hand, about winning their game. In truth, he hasn’t cared about the game in months. At this point, it is just an elaborate way of learning things about Percival."
"Percival Fairwell, who barges in and slams the door behind him like he’s being chased. Percival Fairwell, who has never willingly spent time around him. Percival Fairwell, who is holding his side and bleeding and- Oh. Percival Fairwell, who has never willingly spent time around him."
"Darius would say he’s never seen Percival care about someone in the same way he seems to care about her, but the glimpses he’s seen of how Fairwell feels about ‘his Alex’ is just as soft, if not even softer than his inclinations towards Howard."
"There is something between the two of them, something Darius has never heard of and cannot name, but he knows that as soon as they speak, or leave the room, it will break, and Percival will never come to him for help like he did tonight ever again."
