Unit X: Workshop
I attended the Johnny Hardstaff workshop as well, were we came up with ideas for ident and uploaded them to padlet, he then critiqued our ideas and told us were we could improve. Personally I felt anxious presenting my ideas to Johnny, but it was useful to hear his feedback for other ideas.

Tumblr media
I attended the workshop ran my Sam Meech, in which we were all split up into groups of 4 and had the afternoon to create a video using zoom. I have included an image and short clip of our zoom call we had discussing what our final idea would be to show. We originally came up with around 5/6 ideas, but decided on passing an item which everyone would usually have at their side during a zoom call (e.g. mug, book, mask, etc.). The next day we went to show our final product but unfortunately I was the only member of my team on the zoom, but I just learnt when collaborating with others that is the way it goes sometimes!

Unit X: Initial Research
Each gif which I found on Instagram from an array of different artists all have that cute, kitschy feel to them. Each drawing has clashing colours that work really well together (pink & blue), and are all really aesthetically pleasing with their plump round edges. I especially like the second gif for obvious reasons! They are almost reminiscent of 'chibi' drawings, which is a Japanese slang word describing something short. The term is widely used to describe a specific style of caricature where characters are drawn in an exaggerated way: small and chubby, with stubby limbs and oversized heads.

After research through Pinterest and Instagram I found 3 gifs which I found really inspiring. The nice use of colour and simple design makes the whole gif really effective!

https://rossplaskow.com/james-curran-disney-xd
1. I enjoyed this ident as there is a variety of idents with the same sort of idea just with different textures or mediums (e.g. light, fire, fur) each time. The inventive ways of removing 3 each time in different ways is really inventive.
2. This ident for MTV uses an illustrative method throughout the whole clip. The warm orange hues partnered with the cutesy 2-D drawings are really inspiring.
3. Like the second ident this is extremely cute drawings and was made for Disney XD. This uses a vast amount of colours but again the illustration theme used throughout was so impressive.

ITV Creates Ident: Liz West
I chose this ident as one of my favourites as the use of colour, and the medium of light was really interesting to me. Liz is a British visual artist working with light installation, sculpture and public art. Her artworks often combine colour and light with the aim of heightening sensory awareness and experience for the viewer.

Unit X: Initial Research
When looking into idents I chose 3 which were my favourite. The first being from ITV Creates. It was created by London artist Alfie Kungu. I chose this as one of my favourites because I felt the message he was portraying through his ident was extremely powerful. The use of paint to create the idea of texture whilst remaining playful and unified was something I found really impressive in his final piece.
My second choice was BBC 2 2018 (specifically at 4:12 - 4:52), again the use of colour and sound felt so fun and almost childlike which a total juxtaposition of what is shown on the channel, but this drew me in even more. The balloon like noise partnered with the little blobs moving around each other changing colours, all to end the way they started in the lovely pink/red hue was incredible.
My third choice is BBC 1 2002-2006 (specifically at 2:24 - 2:53). The use of movement throughout the ident was really inspiring to me and displayed a lot of inclusivity to disabilities. That and the use of sound was, again, quite a juxtaposition of the hard hitting shows which are usually shown on this channel but I felt as though that would be nice a breath of fresh air before the programme began. I also enjoyed that the main colour used throughout the ident was red, which is the colour of the logo for BBC 1 which linked everything back to it being recognisable for that channel.

Visual Thinking 2: Narrative and Typography - Evaluation
My inspirations for my final pieces were duo-tone magazines which I researched into, and graphic design artists which can be found throughout my Tumblr page. I explored a plethora of different ideas, from using others work as inspiration and experimenting with different typefaces and layouts (whilst using my own thumbnails). I feel as though my final outcomes where successful because both spreads look so different but are so striking in their own individual way. Throughout creating my spreads I have learnt to experiment more with layouts and not trying to make everything perfect, because sometimes that can create the best outcome. I also attended design club, and created graphics using illustration and photography for different magazines, which taught me how many different techniques can be utilised.

These 2 images display the development I was making when creating my final piece. The first image has no refinement or grunge overlay. The second image is using a variety of fonts so I could choose which I preferred.

Visual Thinking 2: Narrative and Typography
Below are some links to some Instagram pages I found really interesting, a lot of them include flat images (no shadows), a designer named Eve Liu is included on the 3rd link, and again the minimalism work but remaining very bold is very inspiring towards my own work.

I researched images created by Carl Kleiner for the IKEA cookbook, and found it really interesting. The simplistic colour palette and strong visuals I found inspiring, and felt as though I could incorporate this idea into my work in some way.
