have a rough outline of a scene I want to write:

alex, confronting yassen, after having spent a lot of time with the man but only having just learned that yassen killed ian: "my name is alex rider. you killed my uncle. prepare to die."

yassen, who didn't realize that alex was *alex rider*, going through the five stages of grief but mostly stuck in shock: oh. okay.

alex looks at him. looks at him longer, and it's pretty much just a glare. he's stolen one of yassen's guns and has it pointed at yassen's forehead.

yassen is caught between deciding whether or not he's going to defend himself or not. the audience can't tell which he will decide.

then, alex brings the gun down to his side. he's seen something in yassen's eyes that he can't comprehend. and then he punches yassen in the jaw, and it feels like grief. and then he covers his face because he doesn't want yassen to see him sniffle.

"who am i kidding? I can't—"

and he cuts off and yassen, in that hears, "I'm not *you.*" and yassen thinks, "that's good." and alex means, "I can't kill you. I couldn't ever kill you, I hate that I've even caused harm to you at all."

And then they sit on the couch together, both grieving.

What is your favorite old fandom trope and how would you write it now?

ooh there are so many, but I think one of my faves is when Alex's scars get revealed. There were a lot of fics where he'd be in the school gym or with K Unit, and everyone would make these terrible assumptions and rumours, and poor Alex would either not know or try to pretend everything was fine.

If I were to write it now, I think it would be interesting to use that reveal as a catalyst to explore Alex's relationship with the people who see it — how they react, and what they do with this information, do they believe him and does he tell them the truth? Looking back on those fics, they focused SO much on the buildup and the immediate reaction, that they almost ended prematurely. We never got to see what they did with this information, how they processed it and how it affected their relationship with Alex, so I think that would be super interesting to explore. Especially since it would be so different depending on who it is that finds out about Alex's scars — Tom, for example, would be concerned for his friend, while Yassen would be angrily plotting revenge.

Also, I would think about flipping the trope entirely from it's angsty, hurt/comfort origins into a humour fic, maybe told through the format of a game of telephone/chinese whispers. It would be hilarious to see Alex come up with fake explanations for each of the scars and see how they mutate into crazy stories, with some even coming close to the truth.

Currently contemplating my AR/H50 crossover series again, and the absolutely monstrous The War We Made multi-chap that I stalled out on planning but have been planning for, like, two years now. The problem being that rather than the Slice of Life I've written so far for this series, it actually has a plot involving a crime, and that has proved trickier than I first supposed, but I also love the premise far too much to just toss it completely. Hence, stalled out.

I'm not working on it, but the worms have invaded again. In all fairness, however, I am also contemplating a Lockwood & Co fic, and my 5Ds fic that I have seemingly abandoned for the last three months, so... it's in good company, I guess XD

While I do love Nile as a character, I don't really feel like we got to see enough of him for me to really form any shipping opinions regarding him. Maybe the show will fix that because I am very hyped to see him on screen.

2. What would have made you like it?

I probably would've liked it if I got to see him interacting more with Alex one on one. If they had talked more during the bell tower scene, for example. I would've also liked it more if the book stopped criticising his vitiligo every time he showed up.

3. Despite not shipping it, do you have anything positive to say about it?

The potential is there certainly and I like the idea of Alex being catnip for assassins. And Alex even calls him classically handsome!

Also imagine the chaos those two could cause together...

Alex Rider Baby Driver au??? (SLAY) (in case you didn't watch Baby Driver it's about a young Getaway driver (called Baby))

Alex as Baby (obviously)(omg his codename would be Cub😭)( he's a speed demon for sure)(tho Alex would NOT be quiet like Baby, he'd mouth off a lot and prolly get punched a few times)(assuming Alex would be 14 then the heists that would take place would take place before the movie)(or it could be still following the movie events AND THEN IT COULD BE ALEX GETTING FREE OF SCORPIA (Doc / The heist groups being SCORPIA?)

The other criminals that join the jobs could be AR villains?? (They dont really like baby in the movies so it would fit)

Who would be Doc? It could be someone from SCORPIA if we're going that way. Ooo it could be Yassen (Doc forcing Baby to be his driver and dragging him into the criminal world. Then at the end of the movie helping baby get away)(that seams very Yassen-like (with him killing Ian and basically kickstarting Alex's fall into the intelligence world. And then trying to protect alex in the end by not shooting him)(or if we're going the TV verse, then training him and saving his life by shooting Nile)

Joe would be Jack

And Deborah could be Sabina(or Kyra) if you need a romantic relationship

omg yes jealous vale is so so good. but i am even more weak for any version of marc/academy boys friendship because there are always so many layers and the dynamic is top tier. the academy slowly realizing that marc is not the big bad evil they thought he was and is actually pretty great. marc 'i have no friends in the paddock' marquez realizing that wow other people do like him and being close to riders (besides alex) is fun. everyone else being confused as hell. and of course the valentino of it all.

Episode 1 - Widow

Episode 3 - Enemy

Maybe I'm just looking at it from a fic writer's perspective but it does seem a massive anticlimax to immediately let Tom and Kyra know Alex is okay? Like, you could have got a good couple of episodes of angst out of that uncertainty.

"Do you want me to kill them?" Oh God yes please.

Why the fuck have they plugged the USB directly into the network rather than an isolated PC? 'Hur dur we checked it first', you literally believe Scorpia are smart enough to not be bluffing about the nebulous death threat but you don't think they could hide something on the hardware? Fuck's sake lads. Amateur hour.

Is this Home Secretary meant to be Suella Braverman? Or Priti Patel maybe lol. (Equal rights and all that, and if it had been a white male character I don't think I would have thought twice about the dialogue but having both your two new female characters be immediately proved wrong/ massively patronised/ blown up ain't hugely comfortable viewing tbh).

Adding Tom/Kyra/Jack so much to the mix has changed the feel of his life a lot, and TV verse Alex has had a lot less fucking over by the Department by this point too. And Rothman feels too creepy to be effectively convincing him of anything.

Hello everyone! Happy TTB anniversary !!! This is not the anniversary of posting, but rather, the day that Fin pitched the idea that became this fic back in 2021. Insane that it’s already been that long. Granted we talked about it for almost 7-8 months before we started writing with the intention of posting.

Raksha Bandhan ficlet is inspired by the casting of Sabina in the tv show!

Every year in the Pleasant/Pleasure household, Raksha Bandhan comes and goes. But this year, Sabina finally has someone to make a Rakhi for: Alex. (Alex is completely oblivious to becoming an adopted brother, and thinks Sabina just gave him a fancy friendship bracelet)

(Raksha Bandhan is a primarily Hindu festival in India where girls tie "rakhi" bracelets onto their brothers as a symbol of protection. It's also a way to form kinships that aren't blood related — and once you accept the Rakhi tied around your wrist, it is socially unacceptable to be romantically involved with the girl who gave it to you, as you've accepted the responsibility of being a brother to her and are now part of her family.)

Space Hotel takes place in Ark Angel (obviously) and is a doctor who crossover!

when Alex goes into space, he runs into another ordinary human, investigating the Space Hotel — Rose Tyler. And there’s more than just a lack of funds at play here on Ark Angel...

Tintin crossover — Alex runs into Tintin on one of his missions, and Tintin takes him under his wing as they work together (also Snowy and Alex become bffs). This one more of a general idea + vibes rather than plot at this point lol. I just love the idea of these two causing trouble together and Alex getting a healthy mentor and maybe even getting encouraged to leave spying for investigative journalism (which, apparently has a lot of similarities!)

The Carpet Weaver is an original story idea I had while writing Dhamaka in Delhi, exploring the life of a girl, whose village in northern India is the heart of a carpet weaving industry, through the rugs she weaves. I don’t really have a plot for this, and I’m on the fence whether it should be the type of story where her carpet weaving is a symbol for her dreams and stories, or if it should be a magical realism type of story where she discovers her weaving/rugs have some kind of innate power to them 🤔

I am a carpet weaver, like many of my neighbours in my village. My father purchases dyed woolen thread and my brothers build the heavy, large looms. In the daytime, my fingers run through the coiled spindles, up and down, through the crisp white grid of cotton threads, slowly but surely singing colours to life in a hundred, thousand knots. And when it rains, and the clouds cover the mountain range, the lights flicker and I weave my dreams onto the loom.

Never Do These Things if You’re A Vampire! This is a silly picturebook idea, where a little vampire girl discovers that the things her father forbade her from doing (eating garlic, going out in the sun, having a pet other than a bat, etc) are actually just things he thinks are life-ending, and not actually harmful to vampires at all! (eg, she puts on sunscreen and goes to the beach! garlic smells very strong, but she enjoys the taste once she gets used to it!)

How many works do you have on AO3? 9 (technically 10 but we orphaned one of them out of shame)

What’s your total AO3 word count? 99,978 (mine) + 7,531 (shared) + 9,991 (someone else's) = 117, 500 (total)

What fandoms do you write for? presently, Carry On but back during my high school ff.net days I did some Percy Jackson/Heroes of Olympus (Percabeth and some separate OCs), Alex Rider (OCs), The 100 (as an elaborate prank), Harry Potter (literally just a My Immortal parody), and Divergent (OCs) and if they weren't oneshots they were never finished.

Do you respond to comments? Why or why not? YES! I'm currently behind on my replies, but it's so fun! It's like a book club but for stuff I created!!???? Shit rocks. I fully didn't expect anyone to read IKABIKAM (my first fic on ao3) when I first published it and so every comment still feels like a miracle.

Have you ever had a fic stolen? No.

Have you ever co-written a fic before? Yes! I love collaborating because it gives me something to bounce off of. A scene partner. A ticking timer. It's like lifting a heavy object by yourself versus getting someone else to bear some of the weight with you. It's easier. I also find myself constantly seeking collaboration with other people even with my solo fics. I'm all up in those DMs pestering people both as motivation and as external processing. And by GOD, do you fuckers have some good ideas. Y'all make me exponentially better.

What’s your all-time favorite ship? SnowBaz but also in a very real sense...Percabeth. (You never forget your first.)

What are your writing strengths? I got my start with rping, so dialogue is really comfortable for me. I also think my training in other art forms (dance, music, theatre, film, academia) positively influence my approach. When writing action, I often mentally frame it as 'blocking' the scene or 'choreographing' the movement. When crafting sentences, I'm constantly evaluating the rhythm and rhyme and repetition (not to mention alliteration) as if it's a song, always searching for the perfect word or metaphor. I also listen to actual songs and pull the emotion from them, using them as character studies or a musical soliloquy. I imagine shots and then write what I see from the perspective of a director explaining the actor’s motivating thoughts. I constantly revisit my thesis, grounding the narrative in callbacks and a cohesive structure like it's an academic paper. And all those things combined create this kinetic cause and effect style I'm really proud of and tangibly improves every time I write something new.

What are your writing weaknesses? I do not have a firm grasp on proper grammar. I'm also really slow and inconsistent with my output because my process is so physically disorganized and meticulous which often frustrates me. I'm also impatient. I don't do wholesale messy drafts; I edit as I go and when I'm done I want it published immediately. I also fall victim to the white room syndrome with physical descriptions. Establishing shots? Don't know them. What a guy looks like? What they're wearing? Sorry, I haven't told you because it felt weird to jam in there. Outside of fanfiction, I also struggle with creating something from nothing. I'm a theologian rather than a god. I much prefer playing in a sandbox and exegeting meaning from someone else's grunt work rather than conjuring the wood and the sand myself. My writing is also incredibly referential to pop culture which I'm not sure would translate outside of fanfic, but I guess I'll cross that bridge if I ever get to it.

AR Ship Week - Fanwork Recs in 2024

This is the second weekly post in the lead up to Alex Rider Ship Week.  3 weeks to go!

This week we’ve got a selection of shippy fanwork recs submitted by members of the fandom.

To The Sea by Suzie_Shooter To the sea is a bitter sweet roadmovie except it’s a beautifully written fanfic. It has drama and angst and love. It’s beautiful.

Devil in Disguise by Polarnacht Yassen catches Alex spying and has his way with a chained-up Alex, who doesn't mind very much at all. Very hot yalex smut with some great d/s vibes and also tentacles.

Excellently written tentacle porn. What more could you want?

Spare the Rod by countessrivers Some great kinky Yalex in an AU where Yassen poses as a teacher at Point Blanc. Really enjoyed it!

A different kind of sacrifice by limnal A very unique Celtic AU where Yassen is a druid and he and Alex have to consummate their arranged marriage. Very cool setting and some very hot smut.

A Winter Offering by LastlyMatt Absolutely love the vibes of this fantasy AU, where Alex is left behind in the forest as an offering to the spirit of the forest (Yassen). Some wonderful descriptions here and some lovely angst.

A fantasy AU where Alex has been chosen as a human sacrifice for Yassen, a woodland spirit. Hot and sweet with some beautiful imagery.

Contain An Inferno by Rirren A deliciously dark AU where Martin Wilby keeps Alex prisoner after Ian dies. The Yassen pov is great here, both so cold and detached and yet so captivated by Alex and yearning for something real. Really loved this one!

Yassen finds Alex, chained up and abused in Martin Wilby's bed. Yassen is a bad man, and I love every moment of it.

Sweet Amnesia by Myulalie Some great Yalex dubcon. Love Alex's determination to save his uncle despite the cost and the vivid descriptions of the surroundings. Loved it!

Exit Strategy by BoldAsBrass A really fun story where Yassen and Alex meet again on a mission and are both unimpressed by Yassen's latest employer. Yassen's pov gives the story a hilarious dry tone and I love the developing relationship dynamic between him and Alex. Really enjoyed this one!

Calming the Storm by TheOtherBlue Yassen takes care of keyed up Alex in a way only Yassen can. Hot & intense and yet there is so much undercurrent love and gentleness, perfect mix.

Falling Slowly by RavenJames "Classic" Yassen buys Alex in an auction fic with a great twist at the end and lofts of messy, conflicted feelings and a loaded past

The Catventures of Alex Rider by LastlyMatt Alex gets turned into a little kitten and Yassen adopts him, having no idea the real identity of his new pet. Fluffy and sweet, read this one a bunch of times for cozy cuteness.

Who By Brave Assent by TheOtherBlue Dub con fucking for a mission, Yassen enjoying the strange kind of intimacy it affords him, Alex losing virginity and niavety, but not having too bad a time.

Petty Crime by EnviousWriter Not many fics explore how much Yassen was messed up by Alex. This one is basically my headcanon of Yassen being unable to continue on with his normal life after Eagle Strike. The plot is fun and the interactions between Yassen and Alex are a joy.

glass and paper by greenkite (shirohyasha) Devilverse AU, Alex trying to take some measure of control over his future by getting Yassen to take his virginity, from Yassen's perspective and his insistence on studying Alex's reactions purely as an asset and being emotionally/physically unaffected not being convincing at all.

High Wire by fredbasset 24 year old Alex Rider being more of a menace than ever, even getting a chance to try his hand at a victorious villain monologue. Sharp, witty, really compelling look at Alex and Yassen ten years on, post-scorpia, still on opposite sides, but still loyal to each other, even when work tries to intervene.

The Stowaway by TheOtherBlue An excellent canon divergence where Alex becomes stuck with Yassen on the Fer de Lance after boarding it in the Eagle Strike book. It starts out reading like canon, then gradually morphs into something much darker (and very hot). I love how sinister but in-character Yassen is here.

This feels VERY in character and believable to me. Yalex and Coster and how it's intertwined and all that

Alone together by Ireliss This work about how past sexual trauma affects Yassen and Alex’s life together is beautiful, moving, quietly sad and hopeful. It’s incredibly well-written.

Falling for you in time and space by kelkblr This is such a sweet romantic series. I love the concern Yassen has for Alex, and I love the way they become each other's family through their isolation. The setting is so well researched and feels so real too.

Coma White by hjbender Yassen captures Alex in Japan. Dark, dreamlike and compelling.

Specific Performance by BurntWhisper Yassen has been instructed to kill Alex but has to decide whether to see it through or not. They both choose to make the most of their potentially-limited time together. Extremely hot with a rough, dominant Yassen. The characterisation of both Alex and Yassen is on point.

The Right Touch by Strange_Soulmates A Star Wars AU where ISB Lieutenant Yassen is trying to track down the rebel agent Alex, resulting in some very, very hot dream dubcon. Really great adaptation of canon character dynamics.

We Keep Meeting Each Other Like This by TheOtherBlue Very hot, very well written, and I love the escalation that comes with each meeting.

Salt, Smoke and Water by Too_Many_Rooks Gender flipped Yalex. So well written, very hot, and with that excellent dubcon/Yassen is kind of a bastard element.

A Friend Indeed by Too_Many_Rooks The meetings between Yassen and Alex with the time jumps between them give a great impression of time passing and Alex getting older, and changing, Yassen borderline pining, but it's still a very neat and coherent story that grows into its ending. There's sex and angst and regret and murder and Alex being a little shit. It's perfect.

A Timely Rescue by TheOtherBlue Just really hot and such a compelling meeting between Alex and Yassen. Time travel and dubcon is a great mix of tropes as well.

Her Finger On The World by countessrivers Who doesn't love Julia being a creep? Also Yassen is so precious here,,,,

Netflix And Kill by Suzie_Shooter This was literally the first Yalex fic I ever read.

Sweet Amnesia by Myulalie TV Yalex with a different first meeting. Even with Alex not knowing Yassen's identity the danger and connection between them is tangible, and the sex is dark and hot.

I Can See You by countessrivers Stalking fic that is honestly really sweet. I love Yassen's weird way of showing affection.

OTHER PAIRINGS

Hold Me Down by countessrivers Julia/Yassen/Alex vampire feed-fuck threeway. Need I say more? I will. Manipulative, seductive, mind-controling Julia, puppetting Alex and Yassen like they're toys for her pleasure, using Alex for his blood, his body, his potential, his connection to his father, and taking whatever she pleases. One of my all time favourites. Julia/Yassen/Alex

Explorations in Parenthood by Too_Many_Rooks Technically a series, but a very sweet and fun Ian/Yassen au. Baby Alex is simultaneously adorable and a menace. Ian/Yassen

A Series of Unexpected Events by kelkblr Really well written exploration of not just an on/off Ian/Yassen relationship, but of how Ian joins the Department and him raising Alex. Filling in the gaps implied by the shows first episode, evening bringing in one of the short stories. I regularly reread this one. Ian/Yassen

Only Once in Paris by Zombieheroine Points for characterization and originality. Also this is so me coded.

it’s very much inspired by the Alex Rider series (specifically the book: Point Blanc) - for those who don’t know what that is, it’s about a young boy whose uncle dies, and he becomes deeply entangled in a world of espionage while trying to find out who killed him. it’s really good, and they have a tv series out for which season 3 is airing in April - give it a watch! i take this concept and sort of run with it - so Harry is an in-coming seventh-year Hogwarts student who finds out his Godfather, Sirius, has died during an auror mission gone wrong. he knows someone isn’t being honest with him - and he doesn't plan on resting until he has answers. here’s a cut:

Harry takes a look around. What was it that Sirius’s mind healer used to say? Five things you can see?

He sees rows and rows of conjured chairs, a raised platform, delicately floating candles - unlit, and the billowing peak of the tent. More than ever Harry can hear Sirius’s dismay at the lack of clowns in attendance.

It’s safer here, so Harry cracks a smile and finally settles his eyes on the dark, gleaming black coffin in the very centre.

He walks carefully through the rows of chairs all circled around it and stops just before the platform raises. Harry feels the telltale sign of overwhelm brew like a potion just behind his eyes, but he shakes it off, tries to delay it. Harry is aware now that he stands there for a long, long while.

Taking a deep breath, Harry places both hands on the edge of the coffin lid and pushes up.

It doesn’t open.

mockumentary, also known as fic number thirteen: triwizard tournament, was discussed a bit here! but it never fails to make me laugh, so i’ll share another little cut 🤣

Olympe rises from her chair and towers over them. The camera tilts up until it can’t anymore and still cuts off the top of her head. She walks over to the balcony, ducking to pass through the doorway, and crosses her arms behind her back.

She gazes down at the fury of elegant chaos, a smirk creeping up her mouth. The seventh-year students are gliding to and fro, preparing to leave in abraxan-drawn carriages while the younger years watch on with wide, awe-filled eyes.

She continues, “Zhis year will not be une répétition of seventeen-ninety-two.”

unnamed fic number seventeen, also known as assassins, is vague one 💀

when I originally wrote down this idea, it was this: spy fic concept - Tom is an assassin, and Harry is a spy; they keep running into each other on various missions and have developed an unlikely friendship. NON-LINEAR - back and forth between past and present narrative — here’s a cut!

When Tom arrived on location, it was to a mess.

Harry Potter never held any qualms or hesitations. If there was a job that needed doing, and the justifications were moral enough, he would do whatever it took to complete it successfully. Unfortunately for Tom (and the meaningless lives that tended to be involved), Harry Potter’s modus operandi typically included wide-scale destructive explosions or the occasional all-out brawl.

This particular scenario happened to showcase the latter.

Potter was panting over an unconscious body. Possibly unknowing to the splatter of blood dotting across his chin, cheeks and nose like crimson freckles. It seemed that he’d been here much longer than Tom - deep cover, likely for months now judging by his scruffier than usual appearance. That hair in particular.

Tom exhaled softly, and thought, He looks good in red.

Harry glanced over his notes, shuffling them around once, then twice. His eyes fell on one of the many, many questions he and the other Gryffindors had compiled over the night.

“Would you say your field is expanding or decreasing?” Harry asked.

“Decreasing,” Voldemort replied without hesitation. Harry’s scar prickled with something vast and telling - something that felt a lot like immense satisfaction.

A morbid curiosity reared its ugly head. “Really?” he asked and squinted his eyes a bit at Voldemort, looking him up and down. “You don’t seem to be taking that very hard?”

“Yes, and why would I, Potter?” Voldemort leaned back and crossed his legs, definitely looking smug. “It is not Dark Lords; it is Dark Lord. If my field is narrowing, and I remain the only one, all’s the better.”
