leverage & stargirl, any character of your choice, with “i’m not going to hurt you”
Rick stared up at the ceiling of the basement cell. Nurse Love called it his room, but he knew what it was. the lock was on the outside, and that made it no better than the barred holding cage he'd been stuck in last summer.
He was here for the same reason, though, in a way. Matt. Matt and his temper. And just like last summer there wasn't anything Pat, or Beth, or anyone could do about it, not right away. So he was stuck here, with Nurse Love's saccharine, veiled threats and a locked door.
No visitors, she'd told him. He was violent, very violent according to the forms Matt had filled out when he'd signed over custody to Helix's rehabilitation program. Not to be trusted.
"Look what you did to your own father," she'd said. "We can't run the risk of anyone else getting hurt because we weren't supervising you properly. Once you've settled, we'll see if anyone wants to visit you."
He'd glared and growled and not snapped that Matt wasn't his dad. He couldn't but the JSA in jeopardy like that.
He got the feeling she already knew, though. It didn't matter. He wouldn't tell her anything.
There was a scraping at the door. He tensed, his whole body aching with it. She could ask again, anything she wanted, about the hourglass, about blue valley. He wouldn't tell her.
The woman who peeked her head in wasn't Nurse Love, though, or any of her creepy orderlies. He'd never seen the Blonde lady before.
"Hmm," She said. "Well, you're not Todd."
Todd? That was... Jennie's brother, wasn't it? The one she and Courtney had saved.
"Eh," she continued. "You know where he is?"
Rick shook his head. Whatever she wanted with Todd, he wasn't about to help her.
The door creaked as she opened it wider. "Ok, c'mon."
He stared. He could see the hall behind her, remembered the route when they'd dragged him in. Two lefts, up the stairs, a right... He could run for it.
And then what? Helix had custody. They could drag him back. Get their pet cops to arrest anyone who tried to help him hide. The nurse had said so, had showed him the paperwork. He belonged to them for fifteen more months.
"I'm not going to hurt you," the woman said again. "C'mon. I've got other people to save, you know."
It was a risk. Rick took it anyways, stumbling into the hall, trying to dart past her. She let him go.
He was trying to figure out why she'd let him run when he saw the trick. Her lookout was waiting at the top of the stairs, a hand on the arm of another boy. Rick may have been a loner at school, but Blue Valley was small. He recognized Alex Montez.
"And you're sure you haven't seen Todd here?" the guy asked. He was about Rick's height, long hair and an air around him that let Rick know he wasn't getting passed.
"No," Alex said. "I just want to go home. I know they've been hiding my letters--"
"We'll get you home, kid. We're looking for Todd to help him, that doesn't mean we're not going to help you. Can you tell me where home is?"
Rick thought of Yolanda. He drove his shoulder into the guy holding Alex. Without the hourglass, he wasn't super strong, but he'd use what he had.
"Don't tell them," he warned Yolanda's cousin. "It's a trick."
"It's not a trick," the bodyguard guy said, rubbing his arm. "We're here to help."
"Why does no one ever believe we’re here to help?" the blond woman said, materializing behind him. "We're not that kind of criminal. We're basically vigilantes. I thought Nebraska liked vigilantes."
"What?" asked Alex.
"You can't have them," Rick said, his anger rising. To Alex he said, "Get behind me."
Alex stayed put.
"Have who?" the man asked. "Easy, kid." He studied Rick in the dim light from the fancy sconces, and shook his head, an exasperated look.
"We're not telling you anything," Rick said again, glaring, daring Alex to prove him wrong.
"You're a cape," the man said. "I can tell. Relax, would you? My name's Eliot. We came here to rescue Todd Rice. His boyfriend asked us to. This place had him last, right? They took you, too?" Rick hesitated, but Eliot seemed to see the nod in his face. "We're not going to hurt you, or your people, ok kid? We just want to be able to tell Danny that Todd's safe. Can you tell me that, if he's safe? Or if these people..."
Rick swallowed. Eliot looked like Pat, the way he said it. Like the idea of Todd being hurt was the worst thing he could imagine, and like he could imagine plenty of bad things.
"Safe," he said, finally.  The Shade could keep him that way, and Jennie, too. It wasn't betraying anyone, he told himself. It wasn't.
"Good," Eliot said. "Then let’s get you and anyone else in danger out of here. We can talk more later."
He had Alex's arm again, and Alex looked like he believed that. Like he trusted that. Rick reached for the hourglass he didn't have anymore and followed. Rescue or not, he didn't have a choice.

Sketchpage of the extended Montez family: Ted "Wildcat" Grant (born Eduardo Montez), his goddaughter and protege Tomcat (Yolanda Montez), Yelena's cousins Carcharo and Alejandro, and Ted's estranged son, Tommy Bronson. The family is tied to the mysterious Great Beast of the Tower of Fate, a monstrous Butcher older than Nabu and perhaps older than Eternity...

Man in a Suitcase: The Man Who Stood Still (1.14, ITC, 1967)
"A letter, Mr. McGill. Addressed to you and found in your clothing. A letter from the FAI - the Anarchist Federation of Spain, which fought against the present government in the civil war."
"Wait a minute, friend, don't let this grey hair fool you that much. That war finished about the time I was born."
#man in a suitcase#the man who stood still#itc#1967#classic tv#raymond bowers#peter duffell#richard bradford#rupert davies#cyril shaps#alex scott#philip bond#jeanna l'esty#neville becker#hira talfrey#ricardo montez#harry h. fielder#unique among MiaS eps for being the only episode Albert Elms didn't record incidental music for; instead Freddie Phillips provides some#very nice spanish guitar tracks. yes we're in Spain‚ for a twisty turny (but essentially pretty light hearted) plot that relates to the#spanish civil war. i remembered almost nothing of this episode‚ possibly bc little me didn't fully understand the nuances of the#various characters political affiliations‚ or maybe bc this is an ep which sort of sidelines McGill; he's very much a passive traveller in#the store here‚ pushed and manipulated by bigger personalities. Davies had been a fairly big film star in the uk and of course had starred#as Maigret on the bbc earlier in the decade; he was just making the transition to character actor at this point and would spend the rest of#his life playing older support in horror films and the like (he died aged 60 in '76). having McGill on the sidelines means we get less#nice little character bits from Bradford‚ but he shines in a scene in which he attempts to tell Davies' much put down wife (and non english#speaker) how beautiful she is in his broken spanish. the minor twist in the ending wasn't in the original script and may have been worked#out by cast and crew during rehearsal

Tumblr media
SUMMARY: Josh and Alina are great friends most days. Other days, they want to tear each other apart. Some days, they’re in love with each other, but neither of them will admit it.
*DISCLAIMER: This is a multi-part series. I do not own any of the characters in the writing except for the OC. The book also uses the actual names of the wrestlers. Gionna is Liv, Austin is Xavier Woods, Josh is Jey Uso, Jon is Jimmy Uso, Trinity is Naomi, Alina is just Alina. The book is not realistic and does not take place during real events, but some actual events could pop up in the story eventually. I DO NOT GIVE ANYONE PERMISSION TO POST MY WORK ON ANY SITE*
PAIRING: Jey Uso x Black OC
TROPE: Friends to Lovers
WARNINGS: Language
WORD COUNT: 2,297
PART ONE
PART TWO
“One! Two! Three!” Shouts the crowd. The bell would ring, signifying the end of the tag match. The Usos rolled out the ring quickly before an angry Street Profits could reach them. The tag match ended dirty. Montez’s shoulder was up, but the referee didn’t see it. Josh and Jon knew they got off without being caught and were celebrating on the ramp without care. They would eventually run to the back, vanishing behind the curtain.
Alina is informed to be at the gorilla for Josh and Jon for a backstage interview, and she can hear them as rowdy as ever, drawing near. They would pop out from the dark ramp, bouncing around with their championships in their hands. “Jimmy, Jey, can I get a word? What happened out there?” She says, catching their attention. Jon would drop his sweaty arm across her shoulders while Josh snatched the mic and her hand up.
“What happened out there? What happened out there, Uce, is that we won! Ain’t nothing else happened out there. The Street Profits thought they could hang with us, and what happened!”
“They got dropped!” Jon chimed in.
“They got dropped!” Josh repeats. “Ain’t no one taking these from us, Uce!”
“Yeet!”
“And if you think you got a chance,” Josh takes the mic out of Alina’s hands, blocking her from the camera. She took this as a chance to rid her hand of the sweat he left behind.
“Yeet!”
“You can get dropped too!”
“Yeet!”
“Cause at the end of the day, Uce, you the number twos, and we the ones!” Josh would end his promo with a raise of his pointer finger. His twin would follow suit before they both walked off towards the locker rooms. The cameraman would put his camera down, and the light on its head turned off.
“That was good.” Alex, the cameraman, would say, causing Alina to nod in agreement.
“Ay, Lina!” Josh shouts from across the large hall. “We going out tonight! Don’t make no plans!” Every time they successfully defended their championships, they wanted to go out. Though their night was ending, Alina had to stick around for the last two matches in case the company needed her for backstage interviews.
“Too late!” She teases.
“Cancel that shit, Uce!” Jon shouts, making Alina chuckle softly.
“Text me the details!” She shouts back.
———————————————————————————
Alina didn’t do much clubbing anymore. As she got older, she noticed the club crowd got younger. At thirty-two years old, she just didn’t see the hype anymore. That and it always took her days to recover. Getting her out of the house or a hotel room wasn’t an easy accomplishment, but somehow, Josh could do it every time. Maybe it was because he would harass her until she said yes; He always knew how to make her say yes.
She didn’t like that, but he loved it.
Here she was, standing in a nightclub surrounded by sloshed party-goers, and she had no idea where her group was. What she did know was that she needed a drink. If she was going to be able to tolerate being here, she needed to join the masses. She moved through the crowd, her eyes fixated on the glowing bar at the back of the large room. She hadn’t received any text messages from Josh in over forty-five minutes. All he had to say the last time they spoke was that he was here. When she gets to the bar, she squeezes between two people. They didn't pay her any mind, but the bartender saw her just as she got in.
“What can I get for you?” He asks.
“Vodka sprite, please!” She answered. The bartender quickly moved from her sight to prepare her drink for her. While Alina waited, she took her phone out of her pocket. The screen lit up, showing that she still had no new messages. Her thumb swipes up to unlock it, tapping the messages icon immediately after. Josh’s name was at the top of her inbox, her last message still there. She’d click on the message thread to type up a new message.
Alina: Hey, I’m here at the bar.
The screen would go dark after she sent the message, but she would keep the phone in her hand. The bartender would return with her drink, a smile on his face. “Thank you.” She says. She’d hand over her debit card, allowing him to swipe it. He asked her if she would want to start a tab, but she’d declined. She knew her drinks were on Josh once he found her. She glanced down at her phone; Still no new messages.
A hand would touch the small of her back, causing her to jump. Alina glanced over her left shoulder to find a man who wasn’t her best friend. This man towered over her. If she had to guess his height, she would say he was six foot five inches. He gives her a grin. “Hi,” He greets her.
“Hi.” She returns.
He leans down slightly; his mouth is in listening shot of her ear. “I’m Gavin, and you are?” He holds his hand out for her to shake.
“Alina.” She says, taking his hand. She shakes it gently before letting go of it. “Am I in your way? I can move.” She begins to make space for him. Gavin’s hand rests on her shoulder, stopping her from moving more.
“I came over here for you,” He starts. “I couldn’t walk away without telling you you're beautiful.” Heat began to rise in Alina’s face as her eyes shifted to the floor.
“Thank you.” She says, looking up at the guy again. Gavin wasn’t bad-looking. His black hair was shaggy on his head, his eyes a deep brown that looked almost black. His skin was pale, but his cheeks were faintly pink. He had a nostalgic feel to him overall.
“Are you here with anyone?” He asks.
“I…”
“Yeah, she’s with me, Uce.” A familiar voice chimes in. Josh eyes the man in front of him before holding out his hand. “You good, baby?” He asks, glancing at Alina. Took him long enough, she thought. She slips her hand into his warm one, instantly pulled to the Samoan. Once she was near him, he would slide his arm around her waist. Mentally, Alina took a deep breath to steady her now racing heart.
“Yeah, I’m fine.” She says, leaning in to kiss his earlobe. Josh’s collected demeanor wouldn’t falter at the action, but boy, was he doing somersaults in his head. Gavin glances between the two before letting his brown eyes settle on Alina.
“Lucky man.” He says before turning to vanish back into the crowd.
Alina turns to look at Josh. “Damn, I thought you forgot how to use a phone.” She takes a step away from him.
“My bad, I didn’t know you texted me.” He says. Josh takes in Alina’s appearance. He couldn’t verbally tell her how good she looked, but he’s sure she knows. Of course, she knows how attractive she is. He was always having to fight off men on her behalf. Was he fighting off men for his sake or her own? Both? Both. He was selfish like that. Selfish, possessive—whatever you wanted to call it, he was that.
Alina noticed his staring. It wasn’t like he was trying to hide that he was doing it. He was blatant about things he did when it came to her. “Where is everyone?” She asks, snapping him out of his trance. He looks in two directions before allowing his eyes to settle on her.
“Oh, uh, we got a section. Come on.” Josh snatches up her hand again, pulling her through the crowd. They would zigzag through the dancefloor before making it to a set of stairs. A security guard stood there, blocking people who weren’t them from going up. He would step to the side to allow Josh and Alina to pass. They’d climb the stairs, finding themselves in an area lit up blue. In the corner was a bar that resembled the same as the bottom but smaller.
“Yay, he found her!” Gionna exclaims, jumping up from her seat on a white couch. With one hand, Alina hugs her friend. Josh stood to the side of them, watching the two women interact.
“You gonna let her go, Uce?” Jon shouts at him. The eldest twin always had time to tease Josh and Alina about their relationship. It wasn’t a friendship to him. He was beyond calling it that, as was everyone around them. The only two that were fighting for the title of friendship were the two people involved. Josh reluctantly lets go of her hand, and Alina notices instantly. Her eyes meet his back as he’s walking towards the couch.
“Have you gotten a drink yet?” Gionna asks.
It was then Alina realized she left her drink downstairs at the bar. She looks over the ledge, spotting the small cup sitting at the bar with no one around it. Well, she wasn’t going back for that. “No.” She answers, looking at the petite blonde in front of her. Gionna snatches up the same hand Josh previously held and pulls her over to the bar.
“Alina looks good,” Austin says, watching Alina and Gionna walk towards the bar. Josh and Jon look at each other before Josh looks off in the distance. He could feel his blood pressure rising by the second.
“Not too much on my sister-in-law, Uce,” Jon says. Trinity would slap Jon’s chest, making him bring his hand up to cover himself. Josh looks at his brother, pointing his finger at him.
“Quit playing with me, Jon! I done told you!” His brother would laugh, kicking his feet slightly at the reaction he’d gotten from his little brother.
“Oh, so she’s free game?” Austin asks, standing up.
“This ass whooping can be free game.” Josh snaps, rising with him. “Try it if you want to.” He warns. Austin lowered his eyes at Josh, a mischievous grin on his face. Slowly, he sits down. He wasn’t in the loop about what happens within The Usos friend group, but this little interaction told him everything he needed to know.
“So, like I said, not too much on my sister-in-law,” Jon repeats with a smile. “He don’t play about her.” Josh shoots a glare in his brother’s direction before sitting down.
Gionna ordered a tray of tequila shots at the bar for their group. She got twelve shots for six people. She was on an unspoken mission to loosen everyone up. Now that Lina was here, Gionna knew that the energy in their space would be different. Without fail, Josh and Alina always get weird around each other. “What’s new with you?” She would ask, making a quiet Alina speak up.
“Nothing,” She breathes. “I’m not complaining, though. After that last attempt, I decided to take a break from dating. It’s not worth it.”
“Why? Because of Josh?”
Alina was quiet for a moment. That was part of the reason, but not for what everyone’s thinking. She brings her index finger to her mouth, rubbing slightly at the bottom of her lower lip. It was something she often did when she was choosing her words. “I’m due for some much-needed reflection.” She settled, glancing at her friend. Gionna grinned, her lips twitching as she fought a laugh. “What?”
“Whatever the fuck that means.” She says, laughing at Alina. “I mean, I’m not one to judge…”
“You are right now!” Alina exclaims, causing Gionna to laugh more. The bartender places a tray of shots on the bar before them. Gionna grabs them, moving off her seat. Without another word, she turns to go back to their group. Alina follows behind her, quickly downing the Sex On The Beach cocktail she purchased. She’s going to need more by the end of the night.
“I come baring gifts!” Gionna shouts when they get back to their section. She places the shots on the table and drops down next to Austin, leaving a spot next to Josh open. She sits down, her body turned in towards everyone. Everyone reached for their two shots.
Josh sniffs his shots. “Girl, is this tequila?” He asks.
“Oh, hell nah, Gigi,” Jon says, shaking his head. “This ain’t gonna work for us.” The twins are both leaning to put their shots down.
“No balls.” She says. They pause, glancing up at her.
“Who!?” They shout in unison. They sit up again with their shots in their hands, ready to toss both back. Reverse psychology beats their asses without fail each time.
“Ooh, let’s toast, y’all!” Trin shouts, scooting to the edge of her seat. She holds a shot glass up. “Congrats to my honey and his brother for retaining their championships! Here’s to another successful defense and friendship!” She exclaims. Everyone cheered, leaning in to toast their glasses.
Josh turns to toast his shot glasses at Alina before they both toss them back. The alcohol warms their chests, but they both make a face of disgust before setting their glasses down. “You want another drink?” He asks, tapping her leg. “Vodka Sprite?” She nods. He stands to his feet, moving around her to the bar. Alina watches after him, a soft smile on her face.
“Alina,” Austin sings, sliding over to her. “How are you?” He asks.
“I’m good,” She answers. “You?”
“Oh, never better.” He replies. “Say, I have a question for you…” The pair wasn’t aware, but Jon and Trin were watching. The eldest twin had a grin on his face, not because Alina was talking to anyone, but because Josh was going to lose his fucking shit when he got back.

Noah braindump
- Noah becomes the champion of creation/souls (under Akwan)
it’s a long story but Akwan planned for whatever Owen’s creation would be to become a vessel for some power to help Akwan.
So he (eventually, not for a long while) dies after getting his soul and Akwan is like “haha by the waaaay”
and Noah is just super confused.
this also makes wind to the other androids down in Selcouth, which leads me to my next point:
- he is like. SUUUPER important in the eyes of robots and androids and the like.
mainly because he’s the first robotic entity to roam Selcouth freely after escaping his creator
and also because this boy becomes the literal lord of Morgana and Morgana’s grand judge.
he’s the first android to have a position of power
he’s also the reason that like, several robotic uprisings start in Montez specifically
yippee for fighting for your rights!
plus the “becoming the champion of creation” thing
- rich people are weird to Noah tho. See him as an object instead of a person
especially considering Pandora is a noble and his girlfriend (they just assume Pandora created and owns Noah, which makes her just as uncomfortable)
Pandora just ends losing her shit on his behalf at several nobles because: what the fuck stop being WEIRDDDDD
- Owen and Noah definitely have similar personalities. Albeit with some differences
Both are trying to see the beauty in the world tho :)
both also had to deal with Noah’s pathetic excuse of a “mother”/“creator”
- most androids and robots don’t look like Noah.
Noah is definitely hard to read as an Android, but there are small queues that you can tell that he’s not human. Like his eye color (a little too vibrant)
he is an outlier
but he is openly an android and proud of it :)
part of the reason there aren’t others like him is because making an android look near perfectly human takes a lot of time and a lot of skill, alongside the maintenance it takes in order to keep him working right (like with any human)
the human body is delicate, yes? we have to eat, drink, etc.
Noah is just a bit more tough in the sense that he can tank hits really easily and be able to function when he has what would otherwise be life threatening injuries.
but he still gets grumpy when he gets the munchies.
- Noah is accepted into the De La Dáinn family almost instantly
This boy cries when he figures out that this massive family sees him as family.
And boy oh boy is he NOT a crier (he is but he’s good at hiding it).
All of The Crux is accepted into the family, however to the Lockwood Sibs and Noah, this means more than they realize
The sibs plus Noah never really had a family. So it means a ton to them now that they have one.
Alexander and Noah get off on a sour start but ultimately become buddies. Alex even starts inviting Noah out to play like, golf, or some shit.
Rich ppl stuff idk
All the boys in the De La Dáinn family wrap him up in their antics too and he fits right in.
To which Diana, Pandora, Eliza, and the rest of the girls go “oh god there’s another one-“
- Noah loves to take photos
Bro finds a camera and just will not stop taking photos of everything he sees.
Yeah his memory is perfect as he’s an android, but he knows that his friends’ memories won’t stay as good as they are right now in the future.
Besides it’s just really fun to take pictures and organize a photo book for them :)
The first time he takes a picture of anyone outside The Crux is when Diana holds her granddaughter (Clara, aka Victor and Louis’s daughter) for the first time
After that he starts taking more pictures of people outside of The Crux (with permission ofc)

Phone Call
Thanks to everyone that was encouraging to me in the last few days about my writing. It means a lot and I managed to use my day off to get out of my writing slump. Here’s an excerpt chapter from my fic 97 Months, 9 Days, 1 Hour, 49 Minutes (and 43 seconds but that's getting too long)
~.~
Right as the muscles in her legs complained for a break, Yolanda jogged to her front steps after a long run with Artemis. She steadied a breath before entering, flicking her hair from her face. She took out her earphones and wrapped the cord carefully around her iPhone. Since working at the diner now directly contributed to keeping her family afloat, her savings fund for the AirPods she wanted doesn’t look like it’ll be growing anytime soon. In the back of her mind, Artemis’ voice barked out that she needed to be stretching to not pull a hamstring, but Yolanda was too tired to follow any more gym rat rules. She sighed, pulling the door open.
“I’m back from JSA training!” she called out, shaking her limbs out instead, overheating in her purple hoodie. It was still weird to be so transparent with her parents. Even saying the word ‘JSA’ out loud felt taboo. But as confused and—let’s be honest—concerned her parents were about her superhero stint, they’ve been getting better at trying to accept her as the Yolanda Montez she is. Not the Yolanda who they once expected her to be.
Nobody answered. Yolanda frowned, wandering around the house. Her whole family was eating breakfast when Artemis rang the doorbell this morning. She rounded the corner and smiled when she spotted her brother.
“Mom and Dad aren’t home, they went to the grocery store. Abuelita is at her eye appointment, they’re going to pick her up later. Your friend Rick called,” Alex told her, digging out a green apple from the fruit bowl in the kitchen. Yolanda finished unbraiding her hair, catching the extra fruit her brother tossed over.
“Thanks.” She rubbed the apple against her hoodie. “Did he say why?”
Alex shrugged, already halfway out of the room.
Big help that was. She frowned, peering down at their landline. Why would Rick call her here instead of reaching out on her cell phone? She bit into the apple, thumbing at her phone again all wrapped up in the white cord. No messages.
Flopping onto her bed to make her sore muscles happy, she dialled his number.
“Hi,” she said without waiting for a reply, starting straight away with her burning question. “Hasn’t anyone told you that calling home phones is an obsolete practice and we’re not an early 2000s CW show?”
She heard his scoff over the line and grinned into her phone. “Seriously, you’re lucky my parents weren’t home. They’d start asking questions. Su novio la llama por teléfono? Yolanda, why didn’t you tell us? Blah blah blah. Embarrassing.”
Rick’s scoff cut off, his breath hitching with concern. “They don’t actually think…?”
Yolanda closed her eyes, dragging her hand over her face to physically prevent a gag. “No. No. We’re good. And if you text me like a normal person it shouldn’t be an issue. Anyway, what’s up?”
“It’s nothing,” Rick said. “How was your day with Artemis?”
“Intense,” Yolanda groaned out, sniffing her shirt. She was going to need a shower and at least another five apples to satisfy her hunger after all the calories they burned. “But at least I didn’t pass out.”
“I was recovering from the hourglass, I was sick!”
Yolanda laughed and rolled over to Starfish correctly. “Whatever Hourboy. No, seriously. You call my landline, but don’t call or text me where you know I’d see it. That is sus.”
“It is not…sus…” Rick replied with large disdain for the word.
“It is sus, it’s the most sus and you know it!” Yolanda exclaimed. “What’s going on?”
“Fine,” he sighed, and Yolanda could just perfectly imagine the way he must be blowing hot air out of his nose, prepping himself to drop whatever bomb he was going to share. She’d like to give him the benefit of the doubt and not brace herself for topsy-turvy news, but, well, Rick had a track record for keeping insane secrets. “I’m going to ask you a question that might make you mad and hang up on me.”
“Okay…”
“Were you in love with Henry?”
If not for the fact she was already on her bed, the swift turn of their conversation would’ve knocked her down flat. “Oh. Wow.”
She blinked fast, eyes trained on an old water damage spot up on the ceiling. Her stomach churned, resurfacing many conflicted tangled-up feelings that always arose whenever anyone mentioned her ex’s name. She turned to her right side, gazing at the framed picture she had of them that she’d put up and taken down more times than she could count. A part of herself wished everyone would divorce her from their last memories of Henry, another part of her was happy he hadn’t been forgotten. “Um,” she said eloquently, unable to offer up anything else.
“I know that’s personal,” Rick said in that touchingly gentle tone of his he pulled out once in a blue moon. “I was just… wondering. I was wondering.”
There was an uncomfortable silence over the line. Now, she understood why Rick didn’t text her. This would be prime screenshotting fodder if it had come through iMessages. If Courtney grew wind of their semi-regular evening chats, all of their posts would wind up on TikTok to be made fun of by millions of teenagers. Yolanda deserved her privacy.
“No,” she said after another pregnant pause. “I don’t think I was.”
“How do you know that?” Rick pressed, almost disappointed that she responded that way.
“Why?” Yolanda frowned into her phone. “Did you want me to be in love with him?”
“No!” Rick was quick to shout. “No, no! I mean…” Rick did not elaborate. He sighed and said, “Yes? Kinda?”
“And you’re sure you don’t secretly want to be dating me?” she half-teased, starting to second guess herself.
“Yolanda I will hang up on you.”
“Okay. Okay,” she muttered. “Just checking. You’re being weird tonight.”
“Too weird?”
“Not yet.”
She heard some shuffling on the other end, then a door slam. Yolanda wondered where he was and what he was up to. “Fine, so you weren’t in love. What makes you say that?”
“Because I hated him far longer than I could have ever loved him, and that hatred was so much stronger than anything I felt when we were dating.”
“You don’t hate Henry anymore though. I don’t understand that. Especially since…” Rick trailed off, but Yolanda knew where he was going.
“What, because I still think Cindy Burman is a bitch?”
“Your parents really aren’t home.”
She lifted her head up to glance out the window, those dark curtains stiff as ever. The driveway was empty with no car in its spot. “I’ve got another half hour, but yeah. Hating someone the way I hated Henry is exhausting. I think you understand that.”
“Yeah,” Rick replied with a sigh with so much weight behind it he sounded like an old man.
“Since I was in elementary school, Henry had always been someone in my life. A kid in my class. The football jock. The popular guy I had a crush on. My date buddy. My boyfriend. My ex-boyfriend. Now he isn’t any of those things. He’s just gone. I can’t stay stuck in the past over something that can’t ever change. He’s dead. It’s gone. I’m still angry about the photos and everything that happened but I can’t let it consume my life anymore. Not the way it consumed my mom and dad. I have to let myself believe that if Henry survived and he did apologize, we still would’ve gone our separate ways. But Cindy is still an active person causing havoc in our lives and refuses to apologize for the mistakes she makes. It’s different.”
“Do you need me to say something to Burman?”
“The last time you physically threatened somebody, an old man almost died.”
“Beth brought him back.” Yolanda could visualize Rick’s shrug perfectly.
“I don’t need you to do anything. Besides, it wouldn’t be genuine if she suddenly apologized to me after a visit from Hourman, it would upset Court and no offence but I don’t think she is scared of you.”
“What are you talking about? We can take her down and we know it. When has Cindy Burman ever won a fight?”
Yolanda rolled over to the other side at a knock on the door. Alex hovered outside her bedroom. She shooed him away with her hand but he didn’t budge, typing something out on his phone to show her.
CAN YOU FIX THE WIFI?
Yolanda glanced at her phone. Sure enough, she was now on her data plan instead of their wifi network. She groaned. “One moment, Rick.” She dropped the phone onto her bed and hauled herself up, the aches in her muscles on fire because she didn’t stretch as Artemis told her to. Alex followed right at her heels. Every time the wifi cut out, Alex would ask her to go to the basement to fix the modem. He was perfectly capable of doing it himself but he swore they had ghosts in the basement.
Yolanda never used to believe in ghosts but given her run-ins with the last year’s worth of impossible creatures, she’d been more willing to entertain his fears.
When she returned to the call, she was quick with the quip she was about to give. “When she slit Courtney’s hands and she ended up in the hospital?!?”
Rick was quiet for a long while.
“You still there?”
“Yeah.”
“This isn’t about Henry, is it?” Yolanda closed her eyes, listening to her friend’s even breathing. His breath hitched and she waited and waited for the words to come, worrying they never would. Maybe picking up the phone was half of the battle. She could help him get the rest of the way there.
“Rick, it’s okay to have feelings for her. You don’t have to fight it.”
“It’s like I can’t breathe,” he admitted into the phone. “I don’t know what to do.”
“You have two options. You tell her or you don’t.”
“Yolanda.”
She rolled over on her bed. “Richard. I’m serious. Those are your choices.” Or, he could wait until Beth explodes and tells him she’s got feelings for him too, which seemed the most likely scenario with each passing day, but Yolanda wasn’t about to take that blow to his ego so soon.
She thought for another moment. “You could ask Barbara.”
“Yeah. Sure.”
“No, for real. She’s been in a relationship with someone who has hurt her, but she also fell for Pat.”
“Yeah, repeat that sentence. She fell for Pat .”
Yolanda laughed. “We like Pat.”
“Whatever.”
“How did she know it was the right choice? There’s got to be a secret.”
“I don’t think there is a secret. I constantly want to impress Beth and be with Beth and do things for Beth. And even when I am focusing on something else entirely, somehow my brain always finds a way back to her. It’s horrible.”
She sat up on her bed, cradling the phone to her ear as her brows crinkled with concern. “Is it really that bad?”
He did another one of those Old Man Rick sighs and she cracked a grin.
“No,” he admitted.
“It’s exciting, isn’t it? Having a crush.”
“It’s…it’s weird, Yolanda,” he complained. “I’m not recognizing myself anymore.”
“I think that means you’re happy.” A chuckle left her, just imagining Rick moving on from his grouchy, touchy self. She paused. It was actually really nice to think about. “And you know what I think?”
“What?”
“I think it’s more than a little crush. You two are really good for each other. She’s patient and she’s sweet with you, and she listens to you.”
“You’re listening to me right now.”
“Well, I bet Beth doesn’t roll her eyes.”
He doesn’t grumble at her and that’s all the proof she needed. “And I don’t see why she ever would when you talk to her like she’s the best thing God ever created.”
“I think you’re exaggerating just a bit.”
“Mmm…I think I’m not.” Yolanda looked out the window, checking once again for any sign of her parents. “So is this pep talk helping? I still think Barbara is better than this than me.”
“It’s helping,” Rick promised. The car pulled into the driveway and her brother yelled out they were home. “Rick, I have to go help bring in the groceries.”
“Sure. See you later.”
Yolanda sat up. “And Rick? About moving on and being happy?”
“Yeah?”
“I’m glad one of us is able to.”

I don’t see a lot of people talking about the scene with Yolanda calling her mom so maybe I should do it.
I know what they were trying to do. They were going for Yolanda being full of emotions because of what happened to Artemis’ parents and calling her mom to say that she loves her, but oh, she can’t bring herself to do it because Maria was probably still angry with her and Yolanda wants to apologize and explain herself...
But after Maria’s last scene where she throwns her daughter out into blackout, it just feels wrong that it’s Yolanda who calls to apologize. Like, the only possible inclination that Yolanda’s mother is worried about her or tries to connect is that she tried to call:
Tumblr media
And maybe her reaction to hearing Yolanda’s voice on the phone.
But I don’t know, after they spent few scenes establishing Maria’s abusive tendencies, I personally think this scene isn’t enough. I need at least one scene where Maria is actually remorseful. I don’t know, show her looking into Yolanda’s empty room and feeling regret; show her in church talking with the priest, hell, show her on Dugan’s porch!
Maybe this scene was supposed to feel heartbreaking since Yolanda feels the need to apologize and explain herself to her abusive mother, because of this abuse; or maybe it was supposed to be her extending the olive branch and being a bigger person. Either way, I didn’t like it.
And yes, @hournites it is Alex Montez erasure.
