reactor mag dot com heroically doing its duty to remind us that beauty and the beast is a "weird" and "messed up" story, if you think about it (don't you know that fathers willingly trading their daughters to beasts is, like... bad parenting?? and i mean helloooo ever heard of stockholm syndrome??) even though no one asked.

WORST MODERN ADAPTATION! ROUND 1A, MATCH 3 OUT OF 4!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Beastly by Alex Flinn and Beastly (2011) are both based off Beauty and the Beast.
Propaganda Under the Cut:
Beastly by Alex Flinn:
People say that the book is better than the movie but I beg to differ.
Beastly (2011):
Just watch Jenny Nicholson's Beastly video but some key points Vaguely racist and ableist Nonsensical Plot Little Chemistry between lead actors I hear the book is better tho
*gestures vaguely at the whole movie* just, all of it.
There's a Jenny Nicolson video that details why it's a Terrible modern adaptation

Beastly by Alex Flinn
Tumblr media
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐.5
Summary: 💔😈🧙🏻‍♂️🐻💘
Read: April 2022
SPOILERS
I love this book. It’s like Beauty and the Beast, but it's told from the Beast's perspective, as if they were in high school.
I love how much you can tell the character has grown throughout the book; I’m a sucker for character development.
The story's beginning is the only reason it isn’t 5 stars. I know this book is supposed to be from an obnoxious, rich kid’s perspective, but it feels too obnoxious, if that makes sense.
He’s the narrator, and I just don’t want him to be.
I guess that helps with the character arc and growth throughout the book, but I still find the first 20-30 pages or so to be a struggle to get through.
I know the author has more books in this series, taking classic fairytales and making them more modern, so I am excited to read more of them!

Beastly (2011, Daniel Barnz)
19/01/2024
Beastly is a 2011 film written and directed by Daniel Barnz.
Based on the novel of the same name by Alex Flinn, the film is a modern and youthful reinterpretation of the fairy tale Beauty and the Beast.
Kyle thus gradually understands that beauty is not essential to be loved: an increasingly close relationship is born between the two until, while she is leaving for Machu Picchu, they declare their love for each other.
In December 2007, CBS Films purchased the film rights to Beastly, putting it in development as the first project in a long list of swallowed-up productions, also taking other HarperTeen titles in option.
The filmmakers had a production-distribution plan that aimed for a theatrical release as early as 2008, but the start of the screenwriters' strike (2007-2008) canceled the strategy, delaying development.
In February 2009 it was announced by Amy Baer, president and executive director of CBS Films, that Alex Flynn's novel Beastly would be adapted for the big screen by Daniel Barnz, in charge of directing and writing the screenplay. Susan Cartsonis with her Storefront Films and Roz Weisberg are approached to co-produce the film.
The film's main song, Broken Arrow, was composed by Pixie Lott. Furthermore, from the twenty-first to the twenty-third minute, the plot is set in a masquerade party: here the basic music is Boys and Girls by Pixie Lott herself. In addition to these two songs, a song by the famous artist Lady Gaga, namely Vanity, is also used.
La Idea published the Italian trailer of the film on 8 April 2011.
Beastly was listed as the 45th best film of 2010 in The Times magazine's "The 50 Biggest Movies of 2010".
At the end of the book Linda and Kyle return to school, while at the end of the film they leave for Machu Picchu.

"I know what you want, but she doesn't. She doesn't see the roses in the vases, or the way you've painted the walls. She only sees a monster, and she hasn't even looked at you yet."
My hand flew to my face, but I knew Will was talking about my behavior.
"A monster," he continued, "who brought her here for God knows what purpose—to murder her in her sleep. Or to keep her as a slave. She's afraid, Adrian."

Title: Beastly
Author: Alex Flinn
Rating: 3 out of 5
Review: I certainly still prefer the film as after reading it does a lot better of fleshing out the characters so you don’t automatically hate them from the very beginning and not care about what happens to them. But. While there were parts of the book that felt rushed and while I could have been fine without the group chat intermissions, it did become an enjoyable read towards the end.

Technically speaking, Beauty and the Beast does have a "hideous old beggar woman" who is immediately shunned because of her appearance....but she's just used as a plot point and not given her own chance to find love.
Where are the gender-swapped Beauty and the Beast stories? Or can we only suspend our disbelief far enough to imagine that a beast could be loved despite their looks, but not a woman?

Maybe we judge people too much by their looks because it’s easier than seeing what’s really important.
