Hamish Hawk Interview: Pathos in the Ridiculous
BY JORDAN MAINZER
"It's a very sunny afternoon here in Edinburg, so I'm in a good mood," Hamish Hawk told me over Zoom late last month. When I mentioned to him that I had spent time in Scotland's capital city decades ago and loved it, he lit up. "When it comes to Edinburgh, I'm such an enthusiast," he said. "I really like when people come here." Part of me was shocked that Hawk abided by such simple logic, that nice weather plus a feeling of civic pride equals even temporary happiness. On albums like Heavy Elevator, Angel Numbers, and his latest, A Firmer Hand, out Friday via So Recordings and Fierce Panda, Hawk is not necessarily a spoilsport, but he toes the line between truth and facetiousness. Such a balancing act has proven so far to be successful for Hawk, who has found himself fostering a long-term working relationship with Rod Jones of beloved Scottish rockers Idlewid and twice shortlisted for the Scottish Album of the Year award. But with A Firmer Hand, Hawk didn't withhold a thing, sharing an album focused on various types of relationships with men, from romantic to professional, as well as insecurities with masculinity. And he doesn't quite know whether people will like it. "[A Firmer Hand] is different enough from Heavy Elevator and Angel Numbers being safely on the cheaper poppy side of things," he said. "This one is lyrically and musically quite a change."
Don't get me--or Hawk--wrong: A Firmer Hand is very much a Hamish Hawk record, through and through. Jones returns to the producer's chair, the songs were written by Hawk, and the instrumentation was composed by his core band of guitarist Andrew Pearson, keyboardist/drummer Stefan Maurice, and bassist Alex Duthie. The songs exude familiar vibes, from the very opener "Juliet as Epithet", with its harmonic keyboards, rippling percussion, and of course, Hawk's unmistakable croon. But the first track also sets the mood for the entire record, individual verses encompassing simultaneous feelings of devotion, worry, bitterness, and self-aggrandizement. "So goddamn handsome he makes me anxious / He holds my hand thru the sad advances / Why wouldn't he tho? / I'm just the open secret no-one's ever gonna blow," Hawk sings, making you want to cry and laugh all at once. In general, Hawk uses explicitness not for shock value, but to reveal a similar contradiction within sex, that of vulnerability and hilarity. The album's double entendre title comes from dance punk jam "Big Cat Tattoos", one that both derides and expresses jealousy over traditional notions of manliness. "I think you'd prefer a firmer hand with big cat tattoos and a wedding band," Hawk sings to a lover, eyes rolled, taking down all types of compensatory masculine personas, from the tech bro and the music snob to even the strong-and-silent sad-sack within himself.
A skilled songwriter, Hawk both sings autobiographically and exaggeratedly, and he's able to present other perspectives without the pretense of becoming them. On A Firmer Hand, most importantly, you're not left wanting to solve a puzzle of what happened and when and to whom; instead, you can find a sense of solidarity with the imperfections and troubles of everyone involved, even if your life has nothing in common with them. The ivory tower narrator of "Nancy Dearest" may be lonely at the top, but what matters is that they're lonely at all. The slinky bass and trilling guitars of "Autobiography of Spy" visualize a suave 007 on paper but someone living a secret sexual existence in a sad reality. "We're footprintless on fallen snow / We wear the mist and learn the code," Hawk sighs. Yes, Hawk's clearly diffident himself on songs like "Men Like Wire" and "Questionable Hit", on the latter participating in a music industry where other men wont want to be him if he's clearly gay or effeminate, but thinking, "Will I never tire of fronting?" on the former. But he finds power for us all when adopting a devilish swagger on "Milk an Ending". "This is my ninth life / I shan't stand by like a half shut knife," he declares, continuing, "If you can't take this dance / If you won't fake romance, why should I?" After all, the right to live freely means the right to boast freely, too.
If I was surprised by the wholly sunny disposition of a purportedly autobiographical songwriter who made an album like A Firmer Hand, I was not taken aback by his willingness to break down its songs. Throughout our conversation, Hawk was honest about which aspects of the album were the results of a longstanding goal and which came naturally or even unexpectedly. Read our conversation below, edited for length and clarity, and catch him on tour in the UK and Europe through the rest of the year, with the same band who played on the album.

Since I Left You: At what point did writing a "skeletons in the closet" record become unavoidable?
Hamish Hawk: The first song I wrote for the record was "Questionable Hit". It was written roundabout the same time as some of the Angel Numbers songs, or at least towards the end of the Angel Numbers era, as it were. There's something in the tone of "A Questionable Hit", and even of a song like "Money" from Angel Numbers, and of a couple others in my repertoire, that's similarly slightly finger-pointing, embittered, and cynical. But I felt with "Questionable Hit" there was a sharper tooth in there that I didn't expect. When I wrote that, I felt, even though it was roundabout the time of the Angel Numbers stuff, it wasn't going to fit very comfortably with Angel Numbers, so I sort of put it to one side. Then, my collaborator Stefan Maurice, my drummer, sent me a keys loop that essentially became "Machiavelli's Room". When I was writing that, I became consumed with it. Some songs come really fast, and others take months. This was neither. I ruminated on it, listening to it constantly trying to edit and redraft the lyrics to get them perfect. As soon as I finished it, I looked back at the work and thought, "Ok, I don't think a song like that is gonna sit very comfortably with songs that sound like Angel Numbers." It struck me quite quickly that whatever album "Machiavelli's Room" would appear on, the songs that surrounded it would have to be cut from the same cloth. It was from there that "Questionable Hit", even though it's got a slightly different tone, reared its head again.
[A Firmer Hand] became this wider exercise in seeing how direct, how honest, how diaristic I could be. I think the album has achieved that, but for that reason, I'm slightly more nervous about the release of this record than I was for the past two. It's a vulnerable record...albums kind of exist in this odd space before you release them where you feel you might want to change something, or you're not convinced of exactly what they are. As soon as they're released, it's like, "Ok, now that's done. I can close the door on that. I can orient myself towards something completely new." I'm still in that strange period with A Firmer Hand, admittedly, but I think it's a good piece of work.
SILY: It's not necessarily a logical step after you've gained critical acclaim and more fans to say to the general music listening public, "Here's an album where you might not like me very much." Would you describe the album as totally diaristic, or are there aspects that are tongue-in-cheek and a little self-aware?
HH: Across the board, even with Heavy Elevator and Angel Numbers, and even before that, the vast majority of the inspiration I get to write songs does come from real events and real life. I definitely write in heightened terms. I'm inspired by writers like Scott Walker and Jarvis Cocker who take mundane kitchen-sink narratives and bring them up to this level where they could sing about something incredibly ordinary, like taking the kids home from school or something, and put it on this big Las Vegas stage, this high drama Caravaggio lighting. That's a process I've always been really interested in. As much as my songs are autobiographical, they're not strictly autobiographical. I'll take the truth and polish it up a bit and inject it with this new dramatic or poetic energy. But if we were to go through my songs, I'd be able to point at lyrics and tell you exactly where they came from and what moment in my life caused them to be written. I'm definitely not an abstract writer in that sense: I don't attack things from the perspective of other characters, and I don't try to take on a different persona and write about a period in history or a place I've never been to. It is autobiographical in that sense. My songs are very personal to me. That's the only way I know how to do it, so within that frame, I am trying to push myself to write in different ways, but that's my medium, as it were.
SILY: Even if you don't inhabit other characters or mindsets, you still give space to other voices. There are conversational aspects of your songs where you're presenting the perspectives of others without inhabiting them. How do you find that balance when you write?
HH: I don't think it's necessarily the healthiest thing in the world. In the past, I've been guilty of other characters or people that feature in my songs turning into kind of cyphers, versions of them where they say the things I want them to say. Angel Numbers was when I first started working with other characters in the songs saying things that really did happen, exact phrases. I wouldn't note them down at the time, but they were etched into my brain forever. That continues into A Firmer Hand. I'm trying to be as cutthroat with myself as I possibly can, because more often than not, these characters are saying something to me or about me. This album was a warts and all approach. At the end of some of these songs, I'm not necessarily gonna look great. It was an exercise in seeing how true to life I could be without being fantastical or this sort of protection of artifice. Sometimes, when I listen to these songs back, I think, "Oh, I remember that, that wasn't [my] best day." [laughs]
SILY: On A Firmer Hand, you do write about the mundane, but at the same time, you include hyper-specific cultural references and, even if they're based on real people, tropes like the tech bro on "Big Cat Tattoos". I laughed at the line, "You vetoed every one of my miserabilist movies / You bored everyone from out of town with the virtues of shoegaze." Everyone knows someone like that. Do you try to connect with a wider audience by being hyper-specific?
HH: It's a really good question. In you saying that, I can see you agree with me in that often times, the more hyper-specific you can be, the more idiosyncratic, the more personal, the more likely it is to suddenly explode and be relatable to a huge number of people. More formulaic commercial pop music, there has been historically a belief that if you try to make things as generic as possible, it can be consumed by a much larger number of people. I think you find that the more you try to be generic, the more you try to dumb it down to the lowest common denominator so that everyone can get it, the more people are put off by it. I've always tried in my music to give a vast amount of credit to the listener. I don't want to dumb things down for anybody. I'd like to be immediate in my lyricism. I'd like my lyrics to be understood. I'm not trying to be so pretentious that no one can engage with it. The more personal I can be, the more it ends up relating to so many more people. By adding in cultural references or even local references, those things endear people much more than trying to get to them where they are. It's about creating something so they can approach you, as opposed to--I don't know--trying to be close to their life inauthentically. It's much stronger to be authentically you so people can move towards you.
SILY: It's almost a matter of humility. You don't know their life, and they don't know yours, but being hyper-specific is how we relate to each other.
HH: The song "Panic" by The Smiths has so many British references in it, but towards the end of the song, Morrissey sings, "Hang the DJ, hang the DJ, hang the DJ." He's talking about the songs the DJ is playing, singing, "It says nothing to me about my life." I don't think he's talking about songs that talk about far flung places, because even the songs that talk about far flung places can talk to him about his life. We don't have to have identical lives in order to relate to each other. There's so much more going on underneath all that. I like to give the listener fair credit and assume that they have what it takes to engage with the song on whatever level they'd like to. Pop music listeners are certainly very engaged and have the intelligence and willingness to engage on whatever level they'd like to.
SILY: And the internet prowess!
HH: [laughs] Yeah!
A Firmer Hand cover art
SILY: The mid-album back-to-back of "You Can Film Me" and "Christopher St.", I don't know the stories behind the songs, but they seem to me to comprise a tragic mid-section. Am I off base there?
HH: Not at all. There is a link between those. I'm not going to disclose too much about it, if I may, but you're quite astute to pick that up. "Christopher St.", the music was written by Stefan. I've always been a fan of little vignettes in albums. The thing that makes Angel Numbers cohesive is that it is one unified voice: It is my voice. The band and I never worried too much about dipping our toes into different genres or different sounds or instrumentation within one album. Giving fair credit to the listener, they're able to deal with an album like Angel Numbers. It's not tricky: "Rest & Veneers" has a sort of country feel. "Elvis Look-alike Shadows" is bombastic and loud and high drama. "Frontman" is a harmonium-led lament. I don't think it's hard to engage with an album just because it has many different faces, so I've never worried about having fragments or vignettes or moments in albums that take you out of the world you think you're in, and suddenly they pull you right out. I've always been inspired by albums that seem like they have a left turn in the middle of the record.
I must say, to compliment him, that Stefan is an incredibly gifted piano player and composer on the keys. He's written so many beautiful songs for me and so many beautiful moments that no one's heard, so I was really excited to have a song like "Christopher St." [on A Firmer Hand] because it's such a beautiful piece of music. The writing and the lyrics came so, so quickly. I won't go too much into the inspiration or the stories behind the songs, but I think you're right. It's this tragic two sides. Everything that's in "You Can Film Me" is as bombastic and full of pomp, arch, raised eyebrow stuff I'm capable of, and "Christopher St." is about as earnest and as tender and as melancholic as I get. Those things are absolutely essential parts of my music, so to have them sit next to each other, you'd think it would be a contrast that could repel a listener, but I think--or at least I hope--it achieves the opposite. Having those things sit side by side is really effective. I've always been inspired by the idea of pathos in the ridiculous. Having something very deeply emotional and sad, the height of a certain emotion, next to something really amusing, silly, absolutely absurd. It makes the emotional thing more intense. It has this odd effect that you think would be uncanny and not work, but more often than not, it does.
SILY: Was there a general process for how you came up with the instrumentation on the record? Or was it truly on a song-by-song basis?
HH: It was different than the previous records. Heavy Elevator was one way, this sort of indie rock default. Angel Numbers took off and gave it a little more pomp with brass, horns, and pedal steel, embellishing the slightly rougher edges, softening them up, and bringing them to the fore. It was slightly ballroom. The band and I were very careful with A Firmer Hand to make it a band record. We wanted to be able to replicate all of the songs on the record on stage exactly as they are instead of having to make approximations or use samples or for someone to have to play the violin line on the keys or the trumpet line on the guitar. It was about having a band in a room. We wanted track 1 to track 12 to be obviously the same group of people and basically the same instruments. I think that limitation is really helpful and can often be really fruitful for a creative process. There wasn't too much pre-production involved in the songs. [Though,] the more we record and the more often we're in the studio, we think that's what we want to do next time, to have time to really work things out, as painstaking as it might be.
SILY: Have you played the songs from A Firmer Hand live yet?
HH: Some of them. We've played "Men Like Wire", "You Can Film Me", "Nancy Dearest", and "Big Cat Tattoos". Beyond that, most of the middle tracks we haven't touched yet. We've rehearsed them, and some of them are sounding really great. I'm certainly feeling--and I can't speak for the band--that it's an interesting experience trying to put these songs next to some of the older songs in our set. It starts to feel like a tale of two cities. I think that's exciting. I think it's probably somewhere where good things can come. I don't think it's going to be too much of a problem.
SILY: Do you have the same approach to adapting the new songs to the stage as you did for those on your previous records?
HH: I'd say so. I wouldn't say too much has changed. The first thing we've noticed is that setlists are becoming really tricky. Our sets are typically an hour and a quarter, an hour and twenty minutes, and we're having to cut out some of the mainstays of the set, turn it on its head completely and say, "Ok, suddenly, we're not playing that." Which is okay. That can only be good, to have a sense of renewal or rejuvenation. Reconfiguring the sets is tricky, but it's important we don't rest on our laurels. Any change is good for us. It's always the new song that feels exciting to play. With all these new shows coming up, we're excited to have some new blood in the set.
SILY: Is there one on this record that you're most excited to play, whether you've played it already or not?
HH: I have three, for different reasons. I'm really looking forward to playing "Machiavelli's Room" live. We've rehearsed it, and it's sounding great, but we haven't played it live yet. The first time that will likely get played live is before the album comes out. Who knows what people will make of it the first time they hear it? I'm excited about that one because it's so stark, and it's the type of song that's quite unyielding in the sense that it is what it is. You can't sugarcoat it. On stage, I love performing and love trying to engage with the audience and bring them in. Some of the songs on A Firmer Hand are more pushing people back, or more affronting in some sense. I'm excited to see how "Machiavelli's Room" works, not only in terms of how the audience experiences it, but in terms of what it does to us. It's a two-way street. We can treat the songs a certain way, but the songs treat us a certain way.
Another is "Autobiography of Spy". I really like that song, and I think it's a really interesting album track. It isn't a single, and isn't going to get that much limelight. But I really like it. I think it's a great length, the instrumentation is really interesting, and all the moments are sort of considerate and well thought-out. We're all quite happy with that song and how it happened.
The third is "Juliet as Epithet", the [opening track]. It's very atmospheric.
SILY: Do you use loops live?
HH: We do, but they're never a cornerstone of the songs. They're never an essential part. It's more window dressing. We have little things that will continue throughout the entire record. There are a few songs where we have a loop going on in the background, but it's more painting. We don't like having too many major parts being played by samples.
SILY: Are you planning on coming to the US?
HH: Next year, it's looking like it. This year, we have two tours in the UK, one in August and one in December. We're going on tour with Travis in September throughout Europe. America is likely on the cards for March or April for next year, though it's more likely to be February or March. We've played SXSW twice and are hoping to get invited a third time, but surrounding that, we're hoping to get things sorted on both coasts so we have shows either side of SXSW.
SILY: Would you come to Chicago?
HH: That would be ideal. Obviously, it's all up in the air right now. The ideal would be New York, L.A., and something in Austin, but something in the Midwest would be awesome. Chicago would have to get done. Not only do I love Chicago, but in terms of the numerous art scenes in Chicago, we'd have to sink our teeth into them.
SILY: Have you played here before?
HH: Yes. I've played there and in America, but it was sort of a shoestring tour of the US. I was playing DIY house shows, no money was exchanged. It was me playing in people's living rooms. I've played in 26 states. I played in a living room in Chicago. I've played in Detroit, Atlanta, Athens, Baltimore, L.A., Salt Lake City, all over the place.
SILY: Are you the type of songwriter who's always writing, or do you compartmentalize between album cycles?
HH: Sadly, I do always write. Right now, I'm writing a little bit, but not much because I don't have too much time in my hands. But I've not been known to successfully compartmentalize and say, "This year, I've written my record, and next year, I won't write at all." I don't know how to do that yet. I don't have that relationship with my writing. It is quite consistent. When I do have a fallow couple of months, those months are full of insecurity and dread and self-doubt. Hopefully, in the future, I'll manage to foster something that says, "Okay, I haven't written something for 6 months, and that's okay." But at this stage, if I don't write anything for 2 weeks, I think, "Woah, what's happening? Is there something coming? Maybe I've dried up." Right now, the band and I are throwing some things around at the moment. Let's hope it's the beginning of the next record.
SILY: You could always write about writer's block!
HH: Exactly, but that's when you start falling down the rabbit hole of writing songs about writing songs, and writing songs about going on tour. Suddenly, no one relates to your albums at all except for musicians. "That album's so great, that one about being on the road." People don't really like listening to that on the way to work.
SILY: Is there anything you've been listening to, watching, or reading lately that's caught your attention?
HH: My listening at the moment, I don't know why it's happened this way, but it's been dominated by new country and roots music and new interpretations of traditional blues music. Since I was a kid, I've always really liked folk singers. My mum was a huge fan of James Taylor, Kris Kristofferson, Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Ralph McTell, Gordon Lightfoot, and these 60s folkies. It was my first entrance into singer-songwriter music. Of late, I wouldn't say I've been listening to anything specific, other than the absolute classics of blues, Blind Willie McTell, Mississippi John Hurt, and Lead Belly, which I've always gone back to fairly infrequently. At the moment, I'm listening to a lot of blues and country music. Who knows what that promises for the next record, because I don't think country had much of an input on A Firmer Hand. Maybe I'll see if Willie Nelson wants to do a collab.
SILY: I don't know, the guitar tones on "The Hard Won" at the end are kind of country western.
HH: That's true. That's the last track as well, so maybe that suggests what might come. Here's hoping.

What if … Montreal Canadiens never drafted Carey Price? (NHL Alternate History)
(Ed. Note: It’s the NHL Alternate History project! We’ve asked fans and bloggers from 31 teams to pick one turning point in their franchise’s history and ask ‘what if things had gone differently?’ Trades, hirings, firings, wins, losses, injuries … all of it. How would one different outcome change the course of history for an NHL team? Here’s Robyn Flynn on the Montreal Canadiens! Enjoy!)
By Robyn Flynn
The franchise player for the Montreal Canadiens has been, for better or for worse, the man found between the pipes, dating back to at the very least the dynasty days of the ‘70s. From Ken Dryden to Patrick Roy to José Théodore to Cristobal Huet to Jaroslav Halak to their current cornerstone, Carey Price, the Habs have counted on their man in the blue paint to carry them to the Promised Land.
Unfortunately for them, that hope hasn’t managed to bear fruit since Roy was their main man in 1993.
Given the fact that it seems highly unlikely at this point that general manager Marc Bergevin will be trading Price anytime soon (given the eight-year, $84 million contract extension he just signed), let us ponder what the Habs might have looked like if things had gone a little differently…
Montreal Canadiens Alternate History : What if the Habs had never drafted Carey Price in 2005?
In 2005, Hockey Hall of Famer Bob Gainey was the guy in charge, and despite having a Hart and Vézina winner between the pipes in José Théodore, and a whole slew of promising prospects in Cristobal Huet and Jaroslav Halak, Gainey opted to draft a WHL goaltender out of Tri-City, prompting perhaps the dumbest piece of commentary ever provided by a hockey analyst.
youtube
Carey Price went on to put up underwhelming performances early on in his career, party a little too hardy around the island of Montreal, and overall disappoint fans of the bleu-blanc-rouge.
Then the Canadiens traded Jaroslav Halak, after his insane run backstopping the Habs to the 2010 eastern conference finals, angering many … er, “most” Habs fans, who to this day say that they knew seven years ago that Price was the right man to keep… But the radio never forgets, and the clips of their angry calls to Team 990 say otherwise.
Price wound up outperforming Halak by a mile, in large part due to an injury-plagued career that Jaro has had to deal with, not to mention Mr. Cassé’s CRAZY Hart and Vézina winning season that pretty much silenced his haters.
And just in case you still weren’t convinced of his superhumanly nature, the complete and utter collapse of the Habs without him two seasons ago pretty much proved it. And now, the Habs are locked into eight more years of Carey Price, who will eat up $8.5 million of their salary cap each year.
Cue the record scratch sound effect …
Not so fast. What if the Habs had never drafted Carey Price?
What if Bob Gainey had decided to fill the gaping hole down the middle that fans have whined about for the better part of the last two decades?
Enter, Anze Kopitar.
The 6-3 centerman who hails from Jesenice, Slovenia went 11th overall in 2005 to the future Stanley Cup champion Los Angeles Kings. But in this alternate reality, Kopitar was selected fifth overall instead of Price, filling a desperate need for the Canadiens.
“The Montreal Canadiens proudly select, from Jesenice, Slovenia, Anze Kopitar,” announced Trevor Timmins from the podium, alongside Bob Gainey.
Kopitar posed for pictures in his new Habs jersey, and shyly answered James Duthie’s questions immediately thereafter.
After spending one more season playing in the SEL, Anze Kopitar boarded a plane for Montreal, and reportedly lost four inches in height the moment his plane touched down at Trudeau Airport. The phenomenon is known as Montreal Smurf Syndrome, a condition that has afflicted the team down the middle for many years. Despite dealing with suddenly becoming vertically challenged, Kopitar adapted to life in Montreal quite well, developing instant chemistry with Alex Kovalev.
The 2006-07 Habs, bolstered by Kopitar’s 61 point season, and Saku Koivu’s strong leadership as a 2C, catapulted into sixth place in the Eastern Conference with a 44 win season. Cristobal Huet did not play on February 15, 2007, because he was so hungover from celebrating at Kopitar’s week-early half-birthday party, and therefore was never injured, and remained the defacto starter down the stretch.
Despite a promising rookie performance from the Slovenian Sensation, the Habs lost in the first round of the playoffs to the Atlanta Thrashers, thanks to Marian Hossa’s series-clinching double-overtime game winner in game six of the series.
Flash-forward to 2010 and Jaroslav Halak’s historic run to the Eastern Finals.
Kopitar, flanked by Mike Cammalleri (who decided he preferred to play on the right side), and Ilya Kovalchuk (who was so impressed with Kopitar’s performance during the Thrasher’s 2007 first round series against the Habs, that he demanded to be traded to Montreal in February 2010), scored 20 post season goals, including five game winners, en route to the Habs’ 25th Stanley Cup championship. Rookie PK Subban scored the Cup clinching goal, ultimately sealing his fate as a permanent fixture on the Habs’ blue line, and ensuring that no man would ever wear number 76 in Montreal again.
The Canadiens defeated the Chicago Blackhawks handily in five games. Patrick Kane was so devastated by the loss that he immediately retired from professional hockey, and moved to the Adirondacks, where he would live out his days in solitude as a mountain man.
Habs fans naturally proceeded to riot in the city’s downtown streets for four straight days, forcing the cancellation of the Stanley Cup parade, and the army being called in by a young Member of Parliament by the name of Justin Trudeau. When Trudeau was told that he couldn’t just call in the military, the young MP invoked the words of his father and said, “just watch me.”
Stay tuned for the Alternate History Sequel: What if the Habs had decided to trade Carey Price instead of Jaroslav Halak in 2010?

Hamish Hawk Album Review: Angel Numbers
(Post Electric)
BY JORDAN MAINZER
Hamish Hawk’s latest album Angel Numbers wears a heavy self-consciousness. He’s admitted it’s different because the album was written and recorded in the shadow of his first “successful” record, 2021 breakout Heavy Elevator. With Idlewild’s Rod Jones returning at the producer’s helm, Hawk nonetheless found himself avoiding succumbing to pressure, writing much more quickly and loosely, uncharacteristic of the diligent self-editor in him. The result, though, expands upon Heavy Elevator; that is, Angel Numbers’ stadium anthems are as worthy of fist pumps as anything from The War on Drugs or Sam Fender, its ballads as lush as the best Jens Lekman songs. Hawk has created a world where everyday life remains grounded while the angels--songwriters, artists, pop culture icons--creep in and out of our consciousness.
Hawk purposefully reveals the album’s palate on “Once Upon an Acid Glance”, a showcase for all of the instruments used on the record and the venerable band who plays them: guitarist Andrew Pearson, keyboardist and percussionist Stefan Maurice, bassist Alex Duthie, and keyboardist John Cashman. It’s also the song that introduces the album’s angels who come and go, as Leonard Cohen and Karen Carpenter rub elbows with David Hockney and Britt Ekland. And though he can be verbose and obtuse, Hawk has a simply captivating way of delivering lines, enunciating to suggest wordplay even when there isn’t: “Feckless sex dreams” and “vipers in the night” are some of the half rhymes that make you consider whether you’re listening to a poet or someone shouting on the street.
Indeed, it’s this middle ground where Hawk thrives, and it’s no coincidence that the songs where his mind wanders and the album loses its sense of place and time are the best. The soft keyboard hues of “Bill” soundtrack Hawk’s recollection of being visited by none other than Bill Callahan in a dream, who gives him advice about a song two tracks later. That very song, “Money”, sees Hawk surviving the demands of adulthood by layering humorous observations, wondering “who buys a jacket from a gunmaker” and laying his eyes on someone with “legs in those jeans like you were born to ride a Clydesdale”. On the gorgeous, Southern rock-imbued Samantha Crain duet “Rest and Veneers”, Hawk rails against norms, or at least realizes how glad he is they change. Spending time with someone, he sings, “You know, way back in wartime, you’d be my common-law wife / But for now, it’s just the two of us / And I’ve never felt such freedom in my life.” With all the ups and downs and “circumstances so abject,” Hawk finally finds the angels right in front of him.

WordPress 5.4 “Adderley”
Here it is! Named “Adderley” in honor of Nat Adderley, the latest and greatest version of WordPress is available for download or update in your dashboard.
Say hello to more and better.
More ways to make your pages come alive. With easier ways to get it all done and looking better than ever—and boosts in speed you can feel.
Welcome to WordPress 5.4
Every major release adds more to the block editor.
More ways to make posts and pages come alive with your best images. More ways to bring your visitors in, and keep them engaged, with the richness of embedded media from the web’s top services.
More ways to make your vision real, and put blocks in the perfect place—even if a particular kind of block is new to you. More efficient processes.
And more speed everywhere, so as you build sections or galleries, or just type in a line of prose, you can feel how much faster your work flows.
Two new blocks. And better blocks overall.
Two brand-new blocks: Social Icons and Buttons make adding interactive features fast and easy.
New ways with color: Gradients in the Buttons and Cover block, toolbar access to color options in Rich Text blocks, and for the first time, color options in the Group and Columns blocks.
Guess a whole lot less! Version 5.4 streamlines the whole process for placing and replacing multimedia in every block. Now it works the same way in almost every block!
And if you’ve ever thought your image in the Media+Text block should link to something else—perhaps a picture of a brochure should download that brochure as a document? Well, now it can.
Cleaner UI, clearer navigation—and easier tabbing!
Clearer block navigation with block breadcrumbs. And easier selection once you get there.
For when you need to navigate with the keyboard, better tabbing and focus. Plus, you can tab over to the sidebar of nearly any block.
Speed! 14% faster loading of the editor, 51% faster time-to-type!
Tips are gone. In their place, a Welcome Guide window you can bring up when you need it—and only when you need it—again and again.
Know at a glance whether you’re in a block’s Edit or Navigation mode. Or, if you have restricted vision, your screen reader will tell you which mode you’re in.
Of course, if you want to work with the very latest tools and features, install the Gutenberg plugin. You’ll get to be the first to use new and exciting features in the block editor before anyone else has seen them!
Your fundamental right: privacy
5.4 helps with a variety of privacy issues around the world. So when users and stakeholders ask about regulatory compliance, or how your team handles user data, the answers should be a lot easier to get right.
Take a look:
Now personal data exports include users session information and users location data from the community events widget. Plus, a table of contents!
See progress as you process export and erasure requests through the privacy tools.
Plus, little enhancements throughout give the privacy tools a little cleaner look. Your eyes will thank you!
Just for developers
Add custom fields to menu items—natively
Two new actions let you add custom fields to menu items—without a plugin and without writing custom walkers.
On the Menus admin screen, wp_nav_menu_item_custom_fields fires just before the move buttons of a nav menu item in the menu editor.
In the Customizer, wp_nav_menu_item_custom_fields_customize_template fires at the end of the menu-items form-fields template.
Check your code and see where these new actions can replace your custom code, and if you’re concerned about duplication, add a check for the WordPress version.
Blocks! Simpler styling, new APIs and embeds
Radically simpler block styling. Negative margins and default padding are gone! Now you can style blocks the way you need them. And, a refactor got rid of four redundant wrapper divs.
If you build plugins, now you can register collections of your blocks by namespace across categories—a great way to get more brand visibility.
Let users do more with two new APIs: block variations and gradients.
In embeds, now the block editor supports TikTok—and CollegeHumor is gone.
There’s lots more for developers to love in WordPress 5.4. To discover more and learn how to make these changes shine on your sites, themes, plugins and more, check the WordPress 5.4 Field Guide.

Bring a picnic and your friends and family to see beloved classics: Romeo and Juliet (11 June), Carmen (2 July) and The Marriage of Figaro (9 July) as they are live-broadcast. Other sites in the UK include Aberdeen’s Duthie Park, Castle Square in Swansea, Walton Halls and Gardens in Warrington and all the way down to Bembridge in the Isle of Wight.
On 11 June, the first 2019 BP Big Screen is live from the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden. Kenneth MacMillan’s celebrated ballet Romeo and Juliet movingly depicts the love and heart-break endured by literature’s most renowned couple. On July 2, award-winning director Barrie Kosky’s exuberant take on Bizet’s Carmen will be screened. With cabaret ensemble numbers and high-kicking dancers, this production is a beloved masterpiece. On July 9, the Royal Opera’s The Marriage of Figaro is screened. Mozart’s greatest comedy is given a sumptuous staging by David McVicar, its stunning score is fast-moving in this hilarious production with ravishing duets and emotionally potent arias.
Gok Wan, who will present the BP Big Screens in July said:
“As a huge opera and ballet fan, I love the BP Big Screens. As a child I would have loved watching opera for free with my friends! It’s fantastic that 24 sites across the UK become opera houses or ballet stages for the night and share in the magical performances live from London’s Covent Garden. Outdoor cinema is now one of the nation’s favourite summer pastimes and each summer the Royal Opera House BP Big Screens give everyone access to free culture on their doorstep, a great experience for free!”
Alex Beard, Chief Executive of the Royal Opera House, commented:
“The BP Big Screens are a much-loved highlight of the summer calendar across the UK, and I am delighted that we once again beam the best the Royal Opera House has to offer to an ever-wider audience. Over the years, our collaboration with BP has enabled more than half a million people to experience ballet and opera – many for the first time – and together we bring this summer highlight to people all over the UK.”
Des Violaris, Director – UK Arts and Culture at BP said:
“Each summer we look forward to the BP Big Screens and taking free culture to people all over the country. This year we screen live world-class opera and ballet from Aberdeen to the Isle of Wight and build on over 30 years of partnership work between BP and the Royal Opera House”
The first Royal Opera House BP Big Screens was in 1987 showing free ballet and opera to audiences across the UK. In 2018, 41,500 people saw a free opera or ballet performance at one of 40 screenings in 20 different locations.

Terrors and Bairns lead Championship shake-up
Dundee United indicated they mean business as the summer transfer window opened and manager Csaba Laszlo appears to have been given funding designed to ensure they do not spend a fourth season in the Scottish Championship.
The Romania-born Hungarian has utilised his knowledge of football on the Continent to secure goalkeepers from the top flight in Switzerland and Czech Republic.
He also moved quickly to sign four players from their potential title rivals and that has been a theme of the summer, with players switching jerseys between Championship clubs.
Willo Flood looked likely to be in opposition to United following his Tannadice release only to leave Dunfermline Athletic after just nine days, the Irish midfielder using a clause in his contract to take up a lucrative deal with Bali United in Indonesia instead.
<!–
The Pars’ other headline-grabbing business was bringing the Longridge brothers together for the first time in their senior careers – forward Louis switching from Falkirk and his defender brother, Jackson, leaving promoted Livingston.
Like the younger Longridge, midfielder Josh Mullin and centre-half Gregor Buchanan also turned down the chance to stay with the Premiership-bound West Lothian outfit, joining Ross County and Greenock Morton respectively.
Falkirk manager Paul Hartley has shown his determination not to flirt with relegation again and among his signings are four players with international experience – Lithuanian striker Deimantas Petravicius, from Motherwell, Northern Ireland midfielder Paul Paton, previously of Plymouth Argyle, Cyprus midfielder Dimitris Froxylias, who left Dumbarton, and Scotland Under-21 midfielder Ruben Sammut on loan from Chelsea.
Promoted part-timers Alloa Athletic have brought with them the second top scorer in League One last season – Alan Trouten from Albion Rovers – while third-tier champions Ayr United have been slowest off the mark in making additions to their squad.

Ramblings: Parenteau Retiring, Calder Cup, Caggiula Signing, More Name Values – June 15
It was announced on Thursday that PA Parenteau would be retiring. The now-35-year-old Parenteau could not find a home to play in the NHL in 2017-18 and given the league’s propensity for infrequently providing contracts for players of his age in this era, the writing was on the wall.
Parenteau’s hockey career is one of the more fascinating in the last 20 years. By the age of 26, he had just five NHL games under his belt. He was initially drafted in 2001 as a ninth-round pick (when those existed) and after spending a couple more years in the QMJHL, he spent basically six and a half seasons in the AHL before getting his chance in the premier league in hockey. He made the most of it as he turned two years with the Islanders into five more years in the NHL. After having just five games in the NHL at the age of 26, he finished with 491 regular contests in total.
To be certain, Parenteau’s best years were on Long Island when he was often skating as a winger for John Tavares. To say that he was solely a product of Tavares, though, is misguided. From 2012-2017, his NHL service post-Tavares, he managed 1.73 points per 60 minutes at five-on-five. That is the exact same production rate as Henrik Zetterberg. Again, his best years were with Tavares, but he was still productive without him.
Congratulations to Parenteau on grinding in the minors for so long and eventually parlaying his opportunity into a solid NHL career. It’s a valuable lesson for anyone in hockey (and elsewhere).

Dobber writer and editor Cam Robinson released his top-130 rankings yesterday. Cam has been working tirelessly all year to end up at this point so I would recommend going through it thoroughly to get a read on more than just the top-end guys.

The Edmonton Oilers signed Drake Caggiula to a two-year extension with an AAV of $1.5-million. He’s probably an NHLer.

Some news for Canucks fans on former(ish) Vancouver defenceman Nikita Tryamkin as reported by Rick Dhaliwal of Sportsnet:
After 79 NHL games, Tryamkin went back to the KHL following the 2016-17 season. The now-23-year-old had 11 points in those 79 games.
I’m sure there are dynasty owners still holding onto Tryamkin at this point and he put up very, very good real time stats numbers in his 66-game 2016-17 season, especially considering he played under 17 minutes a game.
Alex Edler has one year left on his deal while Chris Tanev has two, though he’s constantly in trade rumours. Beyond the injured Olli Juolevi, there really isn’t a whole lot of competition for Tryamkin should he decide to return in a year or two. A lot can happen in two years but he could step into a much bigger role if he returns for the 2020-21 season.

The Toronto Marlies captured their first Calder Cup since the team moved to Toronto in a thorough domination of the Texas Stars. While the Stars hit three posts (by my unofficial count), the Marlies had the game in hand pretty much from start to finish.
Travis Dermott was a scratch and it’s likely due to injury. We’ll see how serious it is as more information becomes available.

It’s been a pretty good week for the hockey team in America’s capital while it’s been the complete opposite in Canada’s. That only continued with this blog post from TSN’s Travis Yost on a random Twitter account that appears to have pretty good information in the inner-workings of the Sens, and staunchly defends management.
This all comes on the heels of the Bryan Colangelo debacle in the NBA, though this Twitter tirade in Ottawa isn’t even close to what happened in that instance. This is someone largely taking the side of management on certain decisions, not outright attacking players.
Some of you may not remember several years ago when Yost was reporting on the finances of Eugene Melnyk and, by coincidence I’m sure, he was hacked by an IP originating in the Ukraine associated with a charity which had Melnyk as an honourary director.
Oh, and if this weren’t enough for one week:
James Duthie on TSN1050: “Sad thing is from everything I am hearing we may not have heard the end of craziness out of Ottawa. There might be more coming down the chute. I don’t know what the more is yet, I’ve just heard there is more.” #Sens

A few days ago, these Ramblings discussed name value in the NHL. That particular Ramblings covered forwards. It’s worth going through some defencemen as well. Let’s remove the name plates and review some performances from 2017-18.
As with the forwards, these numbers will be on a per-game basis.
Player A: 0.17 goals/game, 0.34 assists/game, 0.54 PIM/game, 2.46 shots/game, 0.18 PP points/game, 1.95 hits/game, 0.96 blocks/game
Player B: 0.15 goals/game, 0.32 assists/game, 0.21 PIM/game, 2.71 shots/game, 0.16 PP points/game, 1.66 hits/game, 1.27 blocks/game
Player A is still in what would be considered his prime, having just finished his age-26 season, but is slowly moving to the other side of that aging curve. He was on a low-scoring, non-playoff team but rebounded somewhat, particularly in the shots department, after a disappointing 2016-17 season. There had been some discussion that this player may be traded from his team which would be beneficial from a fantasy perspective were he to find himself on a more potent offensive team, but it appears he’s likely just to re-sign with the team that drafted him.
Player B was more or less left for dead from a keeper/dynasty perspective before a very solid 2017-18 season provided hope. He was a mid-first round pick five years ago and spent a few years in the minors before finally making a big impact at the NHL level. He managed 10 goals and 32 points despite not really being a full-time player until late October, and even then played under 19 minutes a night. He, too, was on a non-playoff team but it was a much different situation as the team was a very high-scoring one. There is still some talent on his team’s blue line with which to contend but he made the case that he should be a go-to for them on the power play.
Player A is Oliver Ekman-Larsson and Played B is Ryan Pulock.
To say that Arizona was a low-scoring team last year does not necessarily mean they will be again this year. With a shooting percentage rebound from Derek Stepan, a progression from Clayton Keller, Dylan Strome turning into a top-end producer, and some added scoring depth, this team could be a lot better offensively. Those are a lot of ifs, however.
Pulock’s outlook also depends on a lot of factors. Does he take over the top PP billing from Nick Leddy? Does John Tavares re-sign? Can both Josh Bailey and Anders Lee come close to repeating their brilliant 2017-18 campaigns? None of this is a certainty.
One thing that is likely is that Pulock remains a shooting machine. With his first full year under his belt and just scratching his potential, there isn’t much reason to think he has a shooting decline. As long as he keeps shooting, he should be fine.
Ekman-Larsson will undoubtedly be a much higher draft pick than Pulock will be come fantasy drafts in September. Not that there is anything wrong with drafting him, but there seems to be a lot of upside with both he and the Islanders defenceman. If everything breaks right for Ekman-Larsson, he can be a 15-goal, 50-point blue liner. On the other hand, what if everything breaks right for Pulock?
*
Now for a couple defencemen whose perception may be trending in opposite directions.
Player A: 0.08 goals/game, 0.48 assists/game, 0.66 PIM/game, 2.49 shots/game, 0.32 PP points/game, 2.82 hits/game, 1.52 blocks/game
Player B: 0.09 goals/game, 0.40 assists/game, 0.97 PIM/game, 2.46 shots/game, 0.21 PP points/game, 2.23 hits/game, 2.9 blocks/game
Player A, at one point in time, was regarded as the pillar defenceman of the future for his franchise. He was a top-10 pick in the draft five years ago but hasn’t progressed to anyone’s expectations. Though he logs heavy minutes, he hasn’t performed well in those minutes at all. Though his team has been poor besides his performance, he certainly hasn’t done anything to lift the players around him. All the same, he’s been very good fantasy-wise because of those heavy minutes and there really hasn’t been anyone on the roster to challenge his position.
Player B, at one point in time, was his team’s go-to blue liner in all situations. Whether it be locking it down in the final minute or as the quarterback on the power play, he could do it all. Age and injuries caught up with him, though, and he largely lost his power play role, though he still played a lot of minutes. He did regain that power play position in 2017-18 and that resulted in his best offensive season in six years. Without (m)any in-house options to push him out of that slotting, he should have it until he’s traded or his contract runs out at the end of the year.
Player A is Rasmus Ristolainen and Player B is Alex Edler.
Here’s the issue for Risto: how much, or how little, does Rasmus Dahlin cut into his production? For the life of me I cannot fathom an 18-year old stepping in to run a top PP unit in the NHL, no matter the level of prodigiousness. For at least this season, I am assuming that Ristolainen’s top PP job is safe. And that’s important, because all his fantasy value outside of hits/blocked shots is derived from the power play; 59 percent (!) of his career production has been with the man advantage. If he loses that, in non-real time stats leagues, he’s waiver wire fodder.
Last week I wrote about how Troy Stecher lost all his PP time from 2016-17 and that was essentially given to Edler. He replied with 15 power play points after having just totalled 13 from 2015-2017. The team lost the Sedin twins to retirement but there is still enough talent to provide a good first power play unit. The question for Edler, as it has been almost his entire career, is health. He has 10 separate 82-game seasons under his belt and has played more than 75 games twice. In the five full seasons since the lockout, he’s played more than 70 games once. He has 40-point potential provided he keeps that top PP billing and can play over 75 games. Neither is certain, the latter seems unlikely.
We have two players with their own question marks. Can Ristolainen come close to fulfilling outside expectations? Does he lose PP time to Dahlin? Can Edler stay healthy? Does he keep the top PP role?
ADP data will tell us a lot more about the risk involved with the two but taking a gamble on Edler as a fourth or fifth defenceman, even in leagues that don’t count real time stats, might be a prudent investment.

Around The Rink: The next great hockey sketch is likely about your favorite NHL GMs
Move over Chance The Rapper.
The last thing the hockey world needs is another mailbag where readers like you ask writers like me the hard questions. You know, those five or so tough nuggets of hockey that I crack open to you like I know the inner workings of the league itself every week with jokes and topical answers.
If you’re looking for a mailbag like that, you’ve come to the wrong place. Instead, we here at SB Nation will be your MC with one solitary hockey question each week for our panel of bloggers from the NHL team sites you know and love. You can certainly pitch questions to our lovely team, but we’re here to debate, discuss, and maybe settle some ideas and issues across the hockey world at large.
Why? Because it’s fun, and you don’t need us yelling into the already crowded void of mailbags you’re likely up to your ears in. So, instead, sit back and relax as we guide you through the whimsical, wonderful, and wacky questions we come up with to torture our NHL team blogs.
To kick off the first edition of Around The Rink, our topic today is...
Design your own hockey comedy skit
Mary: We’ve all watched the recent Saturday Night Live hockey reporter skit with Chance The Rapper, yes? (This is your PSA to do so if you haven’t!) My question to you today is more open-ended in nature, but will likely produce hilarious results given your range of comedic talents. Now that we all know what one hockey skit looks like, design your own hockey comedy sketch. And, go!
Alex Temes, Five For Howling
Okay here's my sketch; it plays off of SNL's famous fake newscasts/live look-in style skits. Starts on a TSN-like Trade Center spinoff set on deadline day. The set has a general host, say James Duthie, and two analysts who are getting all of the trade calls and are breaking all the news, say Uncle Bob and Elliotte Friedman.
The third guy, specifically John Shannon, is constantly beating an Oliver Ekman-Larsson trade. He breaks in every 30 seconds to update them on Ekman-Larsson rumors. Every time Shannon does that, the crew follows up with a live look in at Ekman-Larsson's house in Arizona. But every time they look in, Ekman-Larsson is doing something completely nondescript and relaxed; he's chilling in the pool (in February), he's watching TV, has some teammates come over for lunch, etc.

Poor OEL...

Pitch: “Woes of Edmonton’s sucking Oilers and its brand new lineup of superstars”
Canadian hockey media is… well… it’s something. So I was thinking of playing the role of Edmonton’s new general manager so I could throw together an Oilers team the higher ups, the journalists, and the fans just can’t hate.
So, ahem, I just got offered the job and will be leaving Pittsburgh. Hey thanks, I’m honored. Glad to be here. That Peter Chiarelli guy wasn’t very good, eh? Glad that dude’s gone! But, folks, I have an important job to do. I haven’t seen something this sh***y dealing with oil since Mark Wahlberg in Deep Water Horizon. As we all know, Connor McDavid is the sole reason why the team is playing like garbage right now – obviously. No doubt about that. But since we paid a billion dollars to sign him for the remainder of the decade and can’t trade him like the totally logical and definitely not nonsensical thing the media believes to do, we should round up some super talented, super cheap guys who’ll deliver the slap in the ass this team needs.
Without further ado, get ready to welcome our new top-six, grade-A, extremely fit, gonna-lead-us-to-a-conference-and-Stanley-Cup-championship Edmonton Oiler forwards: right wing Jack Black who can tickle the twine just as beautifully as he can tickle guitar strings, left wing Mike Myers (because Toronto sucks amirite!), right wing Alex Trebek because I’m pretty sure he’s Canadian and also corrected a contestant on Jeopardy! on the proper pronunciation of Evgeni Malkin, left wing Norm Kelly because he’s a badass and has spicier Twitter fingers than Kevin Durant, and also my nephew, because he’s a better scorer than McDavid and also because he said please.
That’ll do it. That’s a contending team Wayne Gretzky would be proud of. Trust me, I was responsible the 2013-14 icing of superstars Tanner Glass, Taylor Pyatt, and Brian Gibbons during my tenure with the Penguins. I’m a genius.
Mary Clarke, SB Nation
If I’m asking writers to be creative, I have to put myself on the line too. My skit would be simple. It would involve Canadiens’ GM Marc Bergevin, Oilers’ GM Peter Chiarelli, and Canucks’ GM Jim Benning in a Charlie Brown style football joke. All three are insistent that trading a star player will bring them incredibly solid returns and help reset their franchises. After all, they’ve seen it work before, so why can’t it work for them?
The run up and hold all seem perfect, but instead they get the football pulled away at the last second. The placeholder then reveals themselves to be a Predators fan, a Islanders fan, and a Panthers fan respectively for each as they make off with the returns of the deal. The skit would, obviously, be punched up by topical jokes about tampering, players with “personality problems”, and a return to “old time hockey” as seen fit. End scene with the fans toasting to the GMs’ gullibility.
