Homemaking, gardening, and self-sufficiency resources that won't radicalize you into a hate group

It seems like self-sufficiency and homemaking skills are blowing up right now. With the COVID-19 pandemic and the current economic crisis, a lot of folks, especially young people, are looking to develop skills that will help them be a little bit less dependent on our consumerist economy. And I think that's generally a good thing. I think more of us should know how to cook a meal from scratch, grow our own vegetables, and mend our own clothes. Those are good skills to have.

Unfortunately, these "self-sufficiency" skills are often used as a recruiting tactic by white supremacists, TERFs, and other hate groups. They become a way to reconnect to or relive the "good old days," a romanticized (false) past before modern society and civil rights. And for a lot of people, these skills are inseparably connected to their politics and may even be used as a tool to indoctrinate new people.

In the spirit of building safe communities, here's a complete list of the safe resources I've found for learning homemaking, gardening, and related skills. Safe for me means queer- and trans-friendly, inclusive of different races and cultures, does not contain Christian preaching, and does not contain white supremacist or TERF dog whistles.

Homemaking/Housekeeping/Caring for your home:

Making It by Kelly Coyne and Erik Knutzen [book] (The big crunchy household DIY book; includes every level of self-sufficiency from making your own toothpaste and laundry soap to setting up raised beds to butchering a chicken. Authors are explicitly left-leaning.)

Safe and Sound: A Renter-Friendly Guide to Home Repair by Mercury Stardust [book] (A guide to simple home repair tasks, written with rentals in mind; very compassionate and accessible language.)

How To Keep House While Drowning by KC Davis [book] (The book about cleaning and housework for people who get overwhelmed by cleaning and housework, based on the premise that messiness is not a moral failing; disability and neurodivergence friendly; genuinely changed how I approach cleaning tasks.)

Gardening

Rebel Gardening by Alessandro Vitale [book] (Really great introduction to urban gardening; explicitly discusses renter-friendly garden designs in small spaces; lots of DIY solutions using recycled materials; note that the author lives in England, so check if plants are invasive in your area before putting them in the ground.)

Country/Rural Living:

Woodsqueer by Gretchen Legler [book] (Memoir of a lesbian who lives and works on a rural farm in Maine with her wife; does a good job of showing what it's like to be queer in a rural space; CW for mentions of domestic violence, infidelity/cheating, and internalized homophobia)

"Debunking the Off-Grid Fantasy" by Maggie Mae Fish [video essay] (Deconstructs the off-grid lifestyle and the myth of self-reliance)

Sewing/Mending:

Annika Victoria [YouTube channel] (No longer active, but their videos are still a great resource for anyone learning to sew; check out the beginner project playlist to start. This is where I learned a lot of what I know about sewing.)

Make, Sew, and Mend by Bernadette Banner [book] (A very thorough written introduction to hand-sewing, written by a clothing historian; lots of fun garment history facts; explicitly inclusive of BIPOC, queer, and trans sewists.)

Sustainability/Land Stewardship

Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer [book] (Most of you have probably already read this one or had it recommended to you, but it really is that good; excellent example of how traditional animist beliefs -- in this case, indigenous American beliefs -- can exist in healthy symbiosis with science; more philosophy than how-to, but a great foundational resource.)

Wild Witchcraft by Rebecca Beyer [book] (This one is for my fellow witches; one of my favorite witchcraft books, and an excellent example of a place-based practice deeply rooted in the land.)

Avoiding the "Crunchy to Alt Right Pipeline"

Note: the "crunchy to alt-right pipeline" is a term used to describe how white supremacists and other far right groups use "crunchy" spaces (i.e., spaces dedicated to farming, homemaking, alternative medicine, simple living/slow living, etc.) to recruit and indoctrinate people into their movements. Knowing how this recruitment works can help you recognize it when you do encounter it and avoid being influenced by it.

Sisters in Hate by Seyward Darby (I feel like I need to give a content warning: this book contains explicit descriptions of racism, white supremacy, and Neo Nazis, and it's a very difficult read, but it really is a great, in-depth breakdown of the role women play in the alt-right; also explicitly addresses the crunchy to alt-right pipeline.)

Hi and Welcome to: My poorly formatted argument for L being an INTJ.

(No spoilers, also posted on Personality Database.)

Ni- While L may entertain multiple possibilities, his rational analysis usually leads him to a singular conclusion. Once he reaches a decision, he sinks his teeth in and never lets go. He concluded who Kira was from the beginning, and no amount of emotional arguing ever changes his mind. In fact, when it seemed like there was even a possibility of him being wrong, he claimed to be depressed and unmotivated. Even when it seems as though surface level-evidence proves one thing, he follows his intuition when the "proof" fails to convince him of anything else.

Te- L is blunt and borderline tactless. He states facts and rational with little to no regard for how he comes across to other people. He is also not above using emotional manipulation if it means reaching his goal. In fact, as stated, L is not one to be persuaded in his logic in the slightest until empirical evidence presented to him convinces him to do so. He tends to like people who are useful and not "irrational," AKA not Matsuda.

Fi- Despite all of this, L does follow an internal moral code. It is shown to be internal because he shows little regard for outside established morals and the law itself; he wasn't above using torture, which is frowned upon in most cases. L tends to also push boundaries quite a bit, making those around him uncomfortable to the point where they refuse to continue working with him. It is heavily implied that L has his own internal definition of justice and kindness (examples could be found in the novels.) He has very few people in his inner circle, such as Watari; he never truly lets anyone else in, if we're only talking about the anime. He's also not very expressive; L hardly ever talks about how he's feeling, and in general seems to be very stoic until he's caught off-guard. He also profiled Kira by comparing his own personality to that of Kira himself; very Fi.

Se- Despite how he appears, L is quite strong and athletic. He was once the British Junior Tennis Champion, a feat obviously requiring an above average athletic skill. He's also adept at martial arts, able to introduce his foot into someone's face while still being handcuffed to them. His diet consists of almost entirely sweet foods, and he indulges with little regard to decorum. He also cares little for his outer appearance; he wears worn clothes, sits in an odd position, has his hair uncut (or maybe he likes it like that idk), and for some reason doesn't wear shoes instead of just getting fucking sandals.

There are also a few incidental reasons such as:

1) His and Light's personalities are often compared to eachother, I find it hard to think of anything other than the similarities between ENTJ/INTJ.

2) Alessandro Juliani's (dub) performance has this cadence and smoothness I often see in fictional characters who could be categorized as INTJ (trait of Se...?)

3) INTP's are often seen as charming to those around them. While L is beloved by the audience, he is instead seen as off-putting by other characters around him. Those people are wrong; L is the most adorable thing to ever grace this planet with his presence and they should be THANKFUL—wait where was I going?

Why on earth always my favourite shows get screwed up every time?? Why??

So, if you haven't noticed as of yet already or even don't know what has happened, then after reading the below article, you will realise why I have put this question as a Title.

I cannot believe that, this is frequently happening to this very day.

So, one of the concept artist of Star Trek: Prodigy, Oliver Beck, just claimed that his artwork, which was shown in the S1E10, "A Moral Star: Part 2", was stolen by the makers of the upcoming Bollywood movie, 'Kalki 2898 AD', Vyjayanthi Movies, for their logo in the Trailer of the movie. This was happened after South Korean Artist, Sung Choi, claimed that his artwork was also stolen in the trailer, without their permissions or Giving them the credits.

Like, Seriously!! This Screwing up of ST: Prodigy is just unbearable. Like, C'mon!! First, The Money Mafias, just forced to cancel and wipe ST: Prodigy out of existence, until Netflix Saved it. Then, Lucasfilms and Disney, stole the plot of Star Trek: Prodigy into their upcoming Star Wars animated series, Skeleton Crew, and now This Art Theft by the upcoming Indian Movie!! They are thinking like, 'Star Trek: Prodigy' is no longer a Thing anymore rather than an open-source material, after what Nickelodeon and Paramount Canceled and tried to remove it.

And I am really sorry as an Indian Person. Because, ST: Prodigy don't deserve this to be like screwed up everytime. Bollywood has a history of stealing things that they stole and no one behind the scenes gives any credits to the original artists they stole from. Sometimes, I feel ashamed that this had happened. As I support Originality, I think it has to be said rather than just not tell anyone to obscurity. While I am insanely proud of my fellow Indian artists at Mikros Animation in Bangalore, who are involved in ST: Prodigy, I am equally ashamed that this happened. Also, the Emmy-award winning Art director of ST: Prodigy, Alessandro Taini, worked as a Concept Artist for Bollywood film, "Brahmastra: Part One - Shiva". If he knows what happens on Bollywood behind the scenes in reality, then he would be discouraged altogether. There should be a Global Law about Art Theft and Copyrights. Seriously!!

ST: Prodigy, as well as other good quality animated shows and movies, should not deserve to get art-theft like that.

And to Oliver Beck, and Sung Choi, on behalf of Indians, I am really really Sorry that this happened.

I hope that somehow, things will change for the better. I will try to contact Hageman Brothers and @aaronwaltke as well about this incident happened recently.

But this is the harsh reality of Animation as an Artistic Media we live in, ladies and gentlemen.

And I have nothing to say more.

So, I will see you on 1st July when S2 releases on Netflix. I am trying to renew Netflix ASAP. So, wish me luck.

Luckily, Éireann pops during harvest season (re: her two days off from her Maxis education career, which is perfect timing, so at least she's working with me) when there aren't kids around for her to corrupt with her loose morals (gotta love the 19th century). She spends those days trying to build up her relationship with Alessandro and get him interested in the idea of a baby. Maybe he just needs some time to process.

Except apparently he doesn't need some time to process, apparently he needs someone to kick his pixelated ass. Honestly, it's starting to get surprising at this point. They have a high LTR on both sides and Alessandro is a Popularity/Knowledge sim so his continued refusal only really makes sense if he's absolutely set on being the no-good villain in a country song. Maybe he hasn't heard how many of those songs end in murder.

Whatever it is, though, he isn't budging, leaving Éireann alone, unwed, and pregnant. And unless something comes along to save her, she thinks she's probably screwed.

Se la sinistra fatica da anni a trovare un ideologo da cui ripartire, la destra invece ne trova felicemente uno al giorno. E l'ultimo è Fleximan, esaltato oggi come "eroe" (testuale) dai giornali fasciotrash. Fleximan, per chi non lo sapesse, è il tizio o il gruppo che va in giro segando i pali degli autovelox, soprattutto in Veneto. Ora: è un po' un misterioso, a questo punto, il concetto di "vandalo" per la destra nostrana: lo è chi si siede sul Raccordo o getta vernice lavabile sui palazzi del potere, ma non lo è (anzi è "eroe") chi distrugge un bene pubblico pagato coi soldi dei contribuenti e utile a evitare incidenti. Del resto, l'intera vicenda dei limiti di velocità è ricca di divertenti contraddizioni: basti pensare che il capo di un partito sedicente federalista usa i suoi poteri di ministro a Roma per annullare le decisioni di un comune locale; il che, se non altro, fa un po' ridere come incoerenza. Dietro tutto questo c'è però, diciamo, una sfida culturale (scusate il vocabolo radical-chic). E non è tanto quella di chi vuole andare veloce a produrre Pil contro chi vuole "ascoltare gli uccellini" (cit. Salvini). E' proprio quella dell'Italia in cui ognuno vuole farsi i cazzi suoi contro quella che ha curiosamente superato l'età preistorica e quindi ha capito che, se si vive in società, il bene collettivo talvolta prevale sulla pulsione istintuale di fare i propri individuali comodi. Questa seconda, stranissima fetta di paese che si è emancipata dalla giungla è sicuramente minoritaria: basta vedere la auto parcheggiate in seconda fila e gli scaldabagno adagiati sui cassonetti. Non ci resta quindi che l'eroe Fleximan, che è un po' il Vannacci del codice stradale, avendo deciso di incarnare un altro pezzo del lungo e piuttosto putrido intestino italiano. Se uscisse dall'anonimato, sarebbe già capolista leghista per le Europee nel collegio nordest. Ecco, io non ho mai creduto nella superiorità morale della sinistra, essendo questa piena di stronzi e pure di farabutti. QUELLI CHE... W Il FAMILY DAY.

Come si dice dalle mie parti.. "er piu' pulito c'ha la rogna".. Mi e' capitata tra le mani la notizia del matrimonio di Alessandro Sallusti, giornalista ed opinionista che tutti i giorni trovi in tv a supportare quella parte politica che non perde mai occasione per rivendicare i valori della patria, della famiglia e i valori della religione cattolica. Questo signore e' uno che si e' sposato, avuto figli, poi divorziato. Diventa compagno dell''altra cristiana e patriota, Daniela Santanche'. La coppia e' grande amica di un'altra coppia sposata, Dimitri Kunz D'Asburgo Lorena e Patrizia Groppelli. Ad un certo punto la Groppelli che fa? Si separa dal coniuge, visto che aveva le prove di essere stata cornificata. Con chi se l'era spassata il marito? Ma con l'amica del cuore Santanche'. Poi e' storia recente..i due cornificati Sallusti-Groppelli scoprono di essere fatti l'uno per l'altro e fanno coppia fino a pochi giorni fa, quando hanno coronato il tutto con il matrimonio (solo civile).

Insomma, storie che Beautiful diventa una telenovela per principianti.

Premesso che ognuno vive la propria vita privata come meglio crede, io da uno cosi la morale non me la faccio di certo fare. Mai!.
