A-T-3 243 Albert Chancy - Brigitte Bardot Min Pa'ou
Haitian disco. The Republican Party have stepped up their campaign of confusion and innuendo to gain control and power. Papa bullshitter Trump went on X to chat shit with baby bullshitter Tucker Carlson. The take home from the interview is Trump still wants to be a Putin style czar or Prince Mohammed bin Salman ruler, democracy is out, and he needs the support of useful idiots to do his bidding. It could work, that he might be in jail doesn't seem to be a hurdle. The medium is the message, or at least part, and the Trump interview on X was aired just ahead on the first GOP debate broadcast exclusively on Fox in the US. The candidates for the republican nomination for US president don't look like a match for Trump... so what are they doing? Some could be jostling for positions in a Trump administration, if he is successful, although that's unlikely to be the case for weirdo Mike Pence? Are they there to steer the political agenda, maybe
The track I'm posting today is from Haiti. Haiti is prone to natural disasters, it has been hit by floods and earthquakes all though the recorded history of the region. The floods are becoming more frequent though. Haiti hadn't recovered from recent previous disasters before flooding devastating it again in June 2023, then Tropical Storm Franklin hit Haiti a few days ago. The disasters are becoming more frequent due to a warming planet hastened by the burning of fossil fuels (euphemistically referred to as 'human behaviour')
Environmental disasters in Haiti are destroying its already poor infrastructure and economy, people are being displaced, many people are naturally seeking refuge in other countries and the number one historical culprit for the climate catastrophe we are in, the USA, has effectively closed its borders (have you seen those inhumane death traps Texas governor Greg Abbott has put across the Rio Grande?) US hostility towards Haitian refugees can be traced back to the time when the track I'm posting was made and an early act made by Raegan which reversed Carter's 'entrance' policy to let in Haitian 'boat people' fleeing the brutal dictatorships of François "Papa Doc" and Jean-Claude "Baby Doc" Duvalier
It's infuriating watching people putting themselves forward for essentially guardianship of the planet in the GOP debate, at a time when weather related disasters are destroying large areas of the planet, none of them had the temerity to acknowledge human made climate change, moron Vivek Ramaswamy even said "The climate change agenda is a hoax" - Maui wildfire a hoax, is it? August Complex fire, if you want an example on mainland USA?
The level of childishness and repudiation at the GOP debate was astonishing. Ron DeSantis quickly got in “Look, we’re not schoolchildren" after the panel were asked “Do you believe in human behavior is causing climate change? Raise your hand if you do” by Fox host Martha MacCallum. DeSantis is governor of Florida, as governor he participates in what they call a 'roll call vote' and a 'standing vote' in the House of Representatives to pass bills. Raising your had tho that's different, dickhead

Ahem. Here is my (hopefully coherent) list of what every Newsie in uksies does during that one bit of carrying the banner & who they do it with !!!
Splasher, JoJo, & Elmer jump rope !!! Except Splasher is the only one actually jumping & he does flips why he does so because Ross Dorrington is just Like That ig ?
Romeo & Ike play what LOOKS like baseball but I don't think they actually have a ball so they spin around, Ike winds up to throw the ball (that doesn't exist), and then when Romeo swings the back Ike reels back & falls down like he's been hit! So that's going well. (Update: I'm pretty sure he either hits Ike with the baseball bat or he hits someone in the distance with a baseball. Either way. Not going well.)
Henry & Mike play cards !! Henry wins, so he stands up on the box he was sitting on, & goes 2 celebrate I think but Finch shoves him off the box for 'waiting make me antsy, I likes living chancy!'
Finch dances with Jack, for a bit, before walking around and shouting something to Splasher, JoJo, and Elmer, and then he gets ? really excited ? it looks like ? & that's when he shoves Henry (see above).
Buttons & Mush play with a slingshot !! Buttons kinda rolls around while Mush tries 2 hit him with it :)
Crutchie swings his crutch at the set???? (He may be using it as a baseball bat but. not 100% on that)
Jack just kinda hangs around one side of the stage, interacting with a few different people, & then Specs punches him in the arm at the beginning of 'waiting makes me antsy!'
Speaking of Specs !! Albert, Race, & him clean up around the lodging house (specifically inside the set), & at the end of that bit, Race puts on his vest <33
Tommy Boy pulls a paper ball out of the stage & kicks it around for a bit, before kicking it into the audience.

Note
for your main newsies ships, what is each person's favourite trait of their significant other's? Can be both physical and personality related!
Below the cut!
What Spot likes about Racetrack: Spot likes that Race is witty, confident, sticks to what he believes in, and is not intimidated by him. Absolutely heart-eyes for Race’s poofy golden curls and sky blue eyes.
What Racetrack likes about Spot: Racetrack loves that Spot is strong, a good leader, and (most of all) a tough guy with a heart of gold. Shameless fan of his muscles as well.
What Finch likes about Albert: Finch likes that Albert is feisty, spirited, emotional, and fun. World’s #1 fan of Albert’s red hair.
What Albert likes about Finch: Al likes that Finch is driven, passionate, and a good listener. Especially admires how, even though Finch had a rough start in life, he’s “always up for a laugh” and likes “living chancy,” making him exciting, spontaneous, and alluring.
What Buttons likes about Elmer: Buttons likes that Elmer is a hard-worker, empathetic, good with kids, and so intelligent (Buttons is positively wowed by Elmer’s next-level math skills and the fact that he’s bilingual).
What Elmer likes about Buttons: Elmer loves that Buttons is also a very hard-worker, thoughtful, skilled (sewing), and is always thinking of others. Elmer also loves that they can bond over knowing the chaos of a large family!

Finch: Newsies Live Character Study
Apparently I’ve been sleeping on Finch, because he has about as many lines as Race, and he says one of my favorites, “Why do old people talk?” I also definitely kept messing him up in the past with Chaz Wolcott and Daniel Switzer - what can I say, they’re all tall bois. But no more! That curly-haired boy will get the love he deserves! Anyways I wanted to write a fic with Finch but I’m a nerd who can’t write until she studies up, so here’s another character study – I include every individual line he says and actions that I find important.
Tumblr media
(Not my gif)
Act 1
“Try any banker, bum or barber – they almost all knows how to read.”
*Is next to Smalls in the first turn around during “Carrying the Banner”*
“Hey, Crutchie, what’s your leg say, gonna rain?” and then later, “Ah they ought to bottle this guy!”
[It takes an orphan with a stutter] “Who’s also blind
”
*Has slingshot stolen by Crutchie, steals back*
“HEY, what’s the hold up? Waitin’ makes me ansty, I likes livin’ chancy.”
[During nun’s part of Carrying the Banner] “Maybe it’s worth a shot”
*Near Smalls, Albert, and Race a lot*
*Jack steals hat during Carrying the Banner and Finch chases him*
“Hey look! They’re putting up the headline.”
“They’re killin’ us with that snoozer.”
“Hey, Oscar, word on the street says you and your brother took money to beat up strikin’ trolley workers.”
*Pulls Race back from beating up Oscar*
*Is the one who uses his newspaper bag like a skip-it (remember those?)*
*Gets a costume change, puts on tank top*
[Is that news?] “It is to me!”
“I could eat two days on a dime!”
[About the new paper price] “They can’t just do that can they?!”
[We shut down this place just like them workers shut down the trolley] “And the cops will bust our heads! Half them strikers is laid up with broke bones.”
“What’s to stop some other kids comin’ along to sell our papes?”
*Literally sits on the top of the back of his chair at the deli like he’s a perched bird*
[Finch! You tellin’ me you’re scared of Brooklyn?] “I ain’t scared of no turf!... But that Spot Conlon gets me a little jittery.”
*jumps on table* “Now c’mon! We got newsies to visit.”
[They wanted proof we weren’t gonna fold at the first sign of trouble] “Are we?”
“How’s about we just don’t show up for work? That’ll send a message.”
*He and Les put an arm around each other when Les says, “Don’t be so quick to judge
”*
“Oh, they think they can just waltz in here and take our jobs?!”
*Finch is one of the people Crutchie calls for when the Delancy’s grab him*
------
Act 2
*Laying on table at diner* (this boy does not know how to respect furniture smh)
“Why do old people talk?”
“My personal puss on a wooden nickel.”
*Hands Katherine her spoons in King of New York*
*Walks on hands off stage* (probably not a character trait but too impressive not to include)
“Hey, Davey, where’s Jack?”
*hugs Albert first when Jack announces they’ve won*
-----
Conclusion: Friends with everyone, the other guys steal his stuff just to mess with him and because they know he won’t get mad (that’s personal opinion but he does get two items stolen from him in the first song). Always has a slingshot, often holds it when he gets anxious. Never uses any furniture properly. Rarely stays still, is always moving around, slightly hyper? A logical person, and also very non-confrontational (he walks away when Oscar pisses him off, stops Race from fighting, doesn’t want to go to Brooklyn, you really don’t see him in the fight scenes). And I know there’s a theory that he got his nickname (if it’s a nickname and not just his real name, though his real name might be Patrick?? How do we know these things??) from shooting a bird with his slingshot, I personally think that would be out of character for him, unless it was an accident.

We started last week's show on @kcsbfm with the track "New York City" by the iconic Haitian band Tabou Combo, in honor of their co-founder and drummer Herman Nau who passed away on July 25th. Nau and Albert Chancy founded the group in 1966 as Los Incognitos. The next year they won 1st prize in a competition on Radio HaĂŻti and changed their name to Tabou Combo. The group eventually settled in NYC while they continued to record and perform live over the next 50+ years. Under Nau's leadership, Tabou Combo got audiences dancing around the world with their upbeat konpa rhythms and lyrics in KreyĂČl🇭đŸ‡č, Spanish (see "Panama Querida"), French & English. They're an incredible group who you should definitely check out! Above are 3 of their albums from over the decades: 1984, 1974, and 1969. La plus belle soirĂ©e du mois de mars 2018 au Karibe Convention: le 70Ăšme anniversaire du Radio Club d’HaĂŻti
Tumblr media
William F. Sturridge et Jean Robert Gaillard -«A great honor and privilege, to have been invited to share the great hospitality and friendship with the 70Ăšme anniversaire du Radio Club d’HaĂŻti. Only possible through Jean-Robert Gaillard, PrĂ©sident du Radio Club d’HaĂŻti HH2JR and blessed by “Father Joe OMI”. Thank you from Bill. KI4MMZ mmsn.org. Bill Sturridge»
Gilbert Mervilus, 28 mars 2018

An absurdly easy tweak that turns a dud strategy into a magic bullet.
By Geoffrey James
I’m always looking for tactics and techniques that are quick to execute but have an outsized positive result. In all the years I’ve been in business, I have never found a simple tweak that’s this fast, easy and effective.
Everyone knows that when you contact people out of the blue (typically a cold email) they’re more likely to respond if you tell that someone they already know suggested that you speak with them. In sales lingo, that’s called a “referral.”
The Wrong Way
Almost everyone (including experienced salespeople, BTW) makes the same mistake. When they get a referral, they write down the contact information (typically an email address) and then send an email that starts like this:
Hi Jennifer, Jerome Dee suggested I contact you.
That approach hardly ever works because:
Jennifer doesn’t know whether you really spoke with Jerome or just picked Jerome out of LinkedIn or some other source that connected the two of them.
Even if Jennifer believes you spoke with Jerome, Jennifer doesn’t know whether Jerome actually suggested you contact her. He may just have come up in a conversation.
Even if Jennifer believes Jerome gave you her contact info, for all she knows, Jerome may brought her up just to get rid of you. (e.g. “Sorry, that’s Jennifer’s responsibility. Best of luck!”)
Even if Jennifer believes Jerome legitimately gave you her contact info, any attempt on your part to characterize why Jerome gave you the referral sounds self-serving and ridiculous. (e.g. “Jerome says my product is the best in the world.”)
Net result: Jennifer ignores your email.
The Right Way
Fortunately, there is an absurdly easy fix that turns a dud into a magic bullet and here it is: turn the referral into a recommendation.
Here’s how:
Whenever a customer/friend/colleague gives you the contact info for somebody you want to meet, have them send an email to that person and CC you on the email. This is ridiculously easy to do. Suppose you’re getting a referral from “Valerie”:
What You’re Saying Now
You: Do you know anyone who could use my services?
Valerie: Sure. Try Albert Magnus over at Alchemy, Inc.
You: Do you have his contact info?
Valerie: I’ll email it to you.
You: Great! Thanks!
What to Say Instead
You: Do you know anyone who could use my services?
Valerie: Sure. Try Albert Magnus over at Alchemy, Inc.
You: Do you have his contact info?
Valerie: I’ll email it to you.
You: Actually, while we’re talking, would you mind emailing him a quick note?
Valerie: I don’t see why not.
You: Just tell him that we talked and that you recommended he and I speak. And CC me on the email, OK?
Valerie: All right
 Done!
You: Thanks! I’ll keep you posted.
Why This Works So Well
With a mere referral (the first example above), you’re starting almost at ground zero. When you email Albert, your email might get caught in his spam filter. Even if your email arrives in Albert’s inbox, it might not get opened, since it’s from a stranger.
And even if it gets opened, at best the only thing that Albert knows about you is that you (maybe) know Valerie. Chances are your email will be ignored.
With a recommendation (the second example), however, the email will definitely get through Albert’s spam filter because it comes from Valerie, a person with whom he’s previously corresponded, thereby white-listing her email address.
Furthermore, because the email comes from somebody he knows (Valerie), Albert will almost undoubtedly open the email and read it. But that’s just the start.
After reading the email, Albert has four choices:
Email you. You win. You’re in a conversation with Albert.
Reply All (to Valerie and you). You win. You’re in a conversation with Albert.
Reply to Valerie but not you. You win. Valerie will forward that email to you and you’re in a conversation with Albert.
Ignore Valerie’s email. You win. You can now follow-up with another email (CCing Valerie) asking a question or otherwise initiating a conversation. And Albert will reply to you. Why? Because Albert is now in a social bind. If he doesn’t respond to you in some way or another, he’s disrespecting Valerie! And he probably doesn’t want to do that.
By turning the referral into a recommendation, you’ve taken a very chancy cold email and turned it into four ways to win and no way to lose
You’re going to get a response sooner or later.
Of course, the response might be “not interested” or some other objection, but then you can reply with “just out of curiosity, why
” and keep the conversation going. Or any number of email conversational techniques.
Here’s the best part. If Albert is indeed interested in what you’re offering, you’re way ahead of the game because Valerie has explicitly recommended you, thereby implying that you are trustworthy and worth dealing with. This is an incredible “leg up” because establishing trust with a stranger can be time-consuming and difficult.
But you’re already past all that! Yay!
Now you know why turning referrals into a recommendation is the easiest and most powerful of all networking (and sales)  techniques. It literally takes 10 seconds to execute but massively increases the power of your networking.

The Boston Strangler - Early blueprint for serial killer movies
A very chancy role for Tony Curtis, the hollywood pretty boy, as he plays the serial strangler Albert DeSalvo who murdered 13 women in and around the Boston area in the sixties. The film is a fascinating police procedural, and effective thriller, and good performances are littered throughout the film, including Henry Fonda, Murray Hamilton, George Kennedy on the police side of things, and the aforementioned Curtis who does a creepily subdued performance which makes the crimes all the more horrifying. Mostly the details are kept in the background, until one of the latter victims (Sally Kellerman) who is able to give a positive I.D. when she manages to survive one of the attacks. The last part of the film, where we get into all the psychological mumbo jumbo about 'why he did it', is less interesting than the rest of the film, and sometimes the split screen effects tend to unfortunately date the movie to a certain time period when it was all the rage (seems to be mostly 1968 from what I've seen).
3.5 stars out of 5
Released 1968, First Viewing November 1975

Album Review - Current Joys ‘A Different Age’
Tumblr media
Los Angeles, CA -- By the end of this week, Current Joys (aka Nick Rattigan) will have released his fifth solo album A Different Age via Danger Collective Records. If you’ve listened to any of the singles, you’ll know that if this album is anything, it’s intimate.
youtube
Right from the beginning, Current Joys hits you with opening track “Become the Warm Jets”, a slow song that lets every somber note echo. The sparseness in the track let’s every sound ring - you can hear the pain in Rattigan’s vocals and the soft melody can really just split your heart in half. Whilst the song is pretty heavy, there’s something about “Become the Warm Jets” that makes me feel like it’s still a fighter song inside. It captures that feeling of being at the lowest point in your life but still having an ounce of will to keep trudging along until you the slump is over. And this song sets the tone for the album.
After “Become the Warm Jets”, Current Joys takes you on an emotionally tolling journey. There’s an honesty on A Different Age that is brutal and just glares at you. I really feel like this album captures feelings that are often difficult to face, from frustrations to depression to anger and the feeling of redemption. The title track “A Different Age” has a beacon of hope in the songwriting that reminds me of the emotional catalyst of crying so hard you can’t even squeeze another tear out of your body but that kind of emotional outburst is so therapeutic. The instrumental build on this song is gorgeous beyond words and even gives me some Sigor Rós vibes.
Another track that I really like on A Different Age is “No Words”. It’s completely instrumental, as the title suggests, and it really feels like a journey with the self. The echoing of the drum beats and the slightly cinematic orchestration has a lot of space for self-reflection. It’s also surprisingly intense as you move your way through the track. Additionally, I’d also strongly recommend “Alabama” and “In A Year of 13 Moons” if you need some good crying music.

In addition to the music, A Different Age is also a visual album that captures an essence of loneliness, even around other people. The pacing of the videos is slow, painfully slow, which only elongates the lingering pains that we try to expel. Additionally, the color correction on the videos tend to be darker hues with very specific lighting that really sets a glooming mood for the videos. It’s really a special album, visually and sonically, and you’ll find yourself immersed in every second of it all.
