Galadriel; Lady of the Woods of Lothlórien
Tumblr media
I like to think she doesn't wear anything that can be confused with a crown in the third age, both because she doesn't want to be the high king and because I think she thinks she´s not worth it. Not going back to Valinor after the war of wrath was her way to cut ties with the royal family in a way, because she´s too restless and ambitious for Valinor. Also, she´s just not interested.
She goes back to the Noldor braiding system somewhere in the third age after having loose hair like the Sindarin for the first and second.
Second Version;
I didn´t know which I liked best so here is another version of the same drawing
Tumblr media
I think this one fits more with the woods since they are called "the golden woods" I just also think the first one has her pop out more., idk
Also a quick one without the halo cuz why not

What I find fascinating about Galadriel's story, the story of the rebel Noldo who dreamed of ruling a land of her own, actually survived to rule her own land until the end of the third age, and all the while dreamed of home is that it's the story of someone taking all the risks, paying all the price, forgoing everything she had, going all the way, and getting what she wanted only to find out that that was not actually what she wanted. Only to want to go back to where she was at the beginning. Only to want to go home. Maybe it was as glorious as she imagined, but it wasn't worth the price. Maybe it was exactly what she had in mind, but she's got it years after she's wished for it & her wishes had changed since then. Maybe she was actually good at it, but "there's no place like home".

I don’t care what anyone says, I love Morfydd Clark’s Galadriel. Took me a while in S1 to warm up to her but that’s my girl. And you can argue about her being unlikable in the show, and she was certainly stony especially at first, but Morfydd’s performance outsold. It always did. And in S2 she is even better.

I know this isn't actually the New York Times, but it made me chuckle.
Anyway, go have a read here if you like the idea of Daryl as an artist and Carol as a life model, and of course the ensuing smut 😉

The Children of Arafinwë
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Latest portraits
Sons of Fëanáro - Fëanor, Nerdanel & Celebrimbor - Children of Ñolofinwë - Ñolofinwë, Anairë & Grandchildren - Arafinwë, Eärwen, & Grandchildren
Now for Arafinwë and Eärwen, and their grand, and great grand, children!
HC:
Finrod: Finrod as the first born, and his father´s heir grew up vastly influenced by his Noldo heritage, and could often be found in the company of his grandfather, Turgon, or Celegorm and Curufin, who all, except Celegorm, was closely tied with their Noldor blood too, which in no way lessened his identity as a Noldo prince. As all of them were born close to each other (close to Y.T. 1300. Although closely tied with his Noldo side I also like to think he wore small pieces of other culture on him too, both from the Falmar and Vanya, but also from the Edain and dwarf he found and befriended in the first age too (labret and septum). I base his jewelry heavily on art nouveau, as it looks closely to how I see the Sinda and Noldo jewelry, influenced by each other, in the first age, and I like to think he always did his best to be up on the latest fashion, pairing it with a few statement pieces. It is said he had an unrest and eagerness in his youth, coming from his mother, so I think his curiosity and kindness helped a big part with making friends all over, as well as the fact that he stayed reverent towards the Valar, still having faith in them, and while he might not have spoken of his faith that much to everyone he meet, I am sure that it was felt all around him and made people seek him out for a glimpse of it. All in all I also think he had a very tight bond with his father, both in fate, but also the fact that they are compared a lot, both in look and personality, while loving his mother I think the fact that he grew up so closely tied to Noldo politician might have somehow touched their relationship, although it never touched their love for each other.
Angrod: I think Angrod looked a lot up to Finrod and would try to imitate him in small ways, leading to him also spending a lot more time with the Noldo side of the family. In some older versions, both Angrod and Finrod were named Aráto, and although not strictly canon I include it in my own canon as I like the idea of child Finrod looking down at little Angrod and demanding his little brother will be named after himself. Angrod is said to be both wise and thoughtful, which is quite the opposite of his brothers which makes me think that while close, to at least Finrod, in his youth he slowly distanced himself as he got older, I also believe that while his brothers where impulsive what made Angrod a good leader was his thoughtfulness, and while his brothers undoubtedly where good leaders I think a lot of Arafinwë´s people sought out Angrod as a lord, since a thoughtful and careful leader is better in times at war that an impulsive one, who instead fits better in times of peace and discovery. I think Orodreth took a lot after his father in his soft and cautious nature.
Aegnor: I like to think Aegnor grew up close to his mother with Galadriel, meaning that both of them spent most of their childhood in Olwë´s fourth. This leads them to lean more toward their Falmar heritage rather than Noldo or Vanya, which can be seen a lot in how they wear their hair, clothes, and jewelry. I think Aegnor was always restless and perhaps even confused of who he was, especially with his mixed heritage, which led to him seeking out danger, especially in the first age, but it also made him able to give to others and listen to them, after all he was described both as a fierce warrior and a generous noble lord. His confusion over himself also led him to seek out the Edain´s, after his brother, which then lead him to finding Andreth, who seems to of a calm heart. Which was likely what drove Aegnor to her. Her calmness and patience calmed his unrest and confusion, finally making him feel like he belonged and was understood. - I also think his strong friendship with Fingon is really sweet, and although not much is said about it I like to think they where childhood best friends, although Fingon was a bit older, I like the idea of a little Aegnor following him around with braided golden hair to try and mimic his older cousin,
Galadriel: Her being described as willful, proud, and free spirited in her young years, and then later as wise and gentle speaks a lot of her growth, and as I like to think she grew up mostly with the Falmar, therefore also being influenced by them a lot and the longing for new shores, which made her choice after the death of Finwe much easier for her than for her brothers, I also think her restlessness what was made her sought out Thingol, and later Melian who she learned from, as a distant family or merely just new knowledge to uncover. In the start if the second age I think she slowly began braiding her hair after the Noldo braiding system, although it was slowly being changed she made it look as much as the first age ones as she could, as a way to feel close to what she had lost, both with all the death in the first age, but also her staying in when offered forgiveness and a place in Valinor once more. While I think she was much less restless when denying herself Valinor, which I also think was partly guilt some survivor guilt I also don´t think she was ready to settle yet, after all she did help secure Gil-Galad´s place as king, and even after that and settling with Celeborn and getting Celebrian it was clear she was still a big part of the politician power and had no desire to leave, and it seemed that only after having warned Celebrimbor of Sauron and being proven right she slowly retreated, although she kept her hand in even to the end of the third age, although much less. - I can never decide if Galadriel should have curls, waves, or straight hair TT
Other HC: Falmar fashion, and jewelry, are a lot more reviling than Noldo and Vanya, so you can easily imagine the scandal that could be made there, they also wear red henna as makeup, see Galadriel and Aegnor´s ear tips, lips, and foreheads, symbolizing all plans of the world. Eärwen and Olwë, as well as other Falmar royalty, will wear a dot on their forehead, nose and chin. The ear tips nearly show gender and the lip is purely for being pretty. They also have a lot more henna drawings on the rest of their body but that´s for another day. - Finrod and Galadriel´s, as well as Aegnor´s weird waves, curls are from Indis.

a last alliance
Nenya sparkles in the sun, suspended between them, cradled in his palm.
It still startles him to see his own unblemished hand, but as he surrenders the ring—as his heart accepts its impending loss—he feels the luster of its power begin to leave him.
As Galadriel reaches out to take it, he feels relief.
He had fled the battlefield—out of astonishment, out of embarrassment, out of the guilt that came with the realization that in finally reaching for the thing that he desired, the object with the power to liberate his children from the threat of Sauron forever, he had betrayed them.
For the unforeseen cost, he had learned, watching his flesh transform before his eyes as dawn broke over the eastern rise of the mountains, is that he should cease to be one of them.
Too ashamed to let them see his uncorrupted face—his beloved children, the ones who had fallen in such great numbers at his asking, he had sought the shelter of the wood, high above the city, and hid. Some had followed, of course—his faithful sons, ever attuned to their father’s movements.
He had commanded them to stay back, away, and they had obeyed his wish.
That is, until they returned with her.
He had been paralyzed, frozen and inert against the stone until he had heard her voice: soft and imploring, not sharp and menacing, as it so often had been in her dealings with him and his children. He could sense her desperation, and he knew, in that moment, that it matched his own.
As he’d turned to her, revealing his original form, seeing the wonder in her eyes, he’d been filled with hope for the first time that he could remember. For after all, if a ring—little more than a trinket—could heal the wounds of a thousand years, then surely, they—two beings with minds and hearts, who had lived and lost so many times over—could find forgiveness between them.
He holds his palm steady, determined to assuage any of her fears that it might be a trap. No more flames, and no more darkness,he promises her, speaking of a lasting peace—of healing, at last, between elf and uruk.
She slips Nenya onto her finger, and he watches relief wash over her. As she studies the ring, he studies her, appreciating how radiant she is—like the brilliant dawn of the first sunrise he had glimpsed as he’d emerged from the bowels of Angband.
She does not need a ring to radiate with light, and yet Nenya amplifies her beauty even so.
She was a worthy adversary, and now, she will become a worthy ally.
Basking in her light, his limbs feel stronger, his sinews ready. With her at his side, his heart assures him, they will win.
A twig snaps, and they both turn their attention in the direction of the sound. Striding though the sun-soaked forest toward them, with an air of unpracticed confidence, is a tall, blonde figure, clad from head to toe in black.
“It is him,” Galadriel breathes, turning back to Adar with a maelstrom of quiet terror swirling in the depths of her crystal blue eyes. She places a hand against her breast, the place where she has hidden the nine rings. “I cannot face him alone.”
Setting his jaw, Adar draws his blade, stepping in front of her. “You will not be alone, Alatariel.”
As Sauron draws a blade of his own, Adar glances back to lock eyes with her once more. “No more flames,” he murmurs. It is an earnest offer: an offer to set their tenuous alliance in stone as hard of that which sits within the ring of adamant that she wears.
“And no more darkness,” she answers, resolved as she bares her teeth, drawing her own weapon.
Together, they charge toward their ancient enemy.

I'm aware some of this is later versions of canon, but Celeborn and Galadriel giving each other pet names is adorable and I LIVE for it!
Celeborn names her "maiden crowned with a garland of bright radiance":
Thus the name Alatariel, which, according to the late version of the story of their relationship (p. 231), was given to Galadriel by Celeborn [...] which she chose to use in Middle-earth, rendered into Sindarin as Galadriel, rather than her 'father-name' Artanis, or her 'mother-name' Nerwen.
then in LoTR, Galadriel calls him "the Wise":
If our folk had been exiled long and far from Lothlo´rien, who of the Galadhrim, even Celeborn the Wise, would pass nigh and would not wish to look upon their ancient home, though it had become an abode of dragons?
and everyone around them is obliged to accept these pet names as their default names without question.

Hello, it's ok to send another Nimloth ask? Since you were the one remembering me that Galadriel and Celeborn WERE married before the second Kinslaying (for some reason i thought that they got married later ... ): do you have some hc about Nimloth's relationship with Galadriel? Or with her uncle and aunt in general? I think that's interesting that Dior and Nimloth marriage got mentioned in the same line where we're told about Galadriel and Celeborn's one!
YES IT'S ABSOLUTELY OK TO SEND ANOTHER NIMLOTH ASK. and now that you mention it, tolkien didn't have to say that celeborn was married to galadriel when bringing up nimloth's relation to him. he could have just stopped at "nimloth, kinswoman of celeborn." hmmmm. realistically he might have just wanted to give readers a reminder of celeborn's position in relation to other major characters in the verse, but i say this is my excuse to hc that nimloth and galadriel are close!
so tangent here that'll be relevant when i talk about my thoughts on their relationship: i fully subscribe to the, ahem, non-teleporno version of galadriel's history (though i do like the name alatariel very much). imo in that version there's reasonable room to argue -- and is something christopher tolkien stated is a natural enough assumption, i believe -- that galadriel was present in doriath during the second kinslaying. in my books she doesn't stick around with elwing in the havens of sirion, but she alongside celeborn do help elwing and the other iathrim refugees escape menegroth and ruins of doriath.
anyway back to nimloth and galadriel. my hc as i mention in one of my earlier nimloth hc posts is that nimloth was born around the time construction of nargothrond and gondolin was completed, so ~f.a. 102-116. that means she's younger than galadriel by a significant margin, and in fact the house of finarfin has already been well settled in doriath by the time of her birth. nimloth and galadriel's earliest meetings happened when nimloth, still a pretty young child, visited and stayed in doriath with her parents. i don't see galadriel as someone who likes kids that much, so there wasn't too much meaningful interaction between them at that time. celeborn did love to dote on his niece though, so galadriel spent more time around young nimloth than she would have most children. and nimloth was one of those super friendly and inquisitive kids, so while galadriel would sometimes come away from interactions with her feeling a bit drained by her enthusiasm, she was definitely fond of nimloth!
they become a lot more meaningfully close when nimloth gets older and enters her late teen / early adult years. she has the same competitive drive that galadriel has, and she loves to learn and try new things. she's also diligent and hardworking -- all things galadriel finds endearing about her -- and has a very academic streak, which jives well with galadriel too. they spend lots of time together, one-on-one or with others (celeborn, melian, luthien, etc.), when they're both present in doriath. nimloth, for her part, admires how knowledgeable and competent her aunt is. i like to imagine she learned a good bit from galadriel! maybe some enchantments, and maybe about the history of ea and arda. nimloth doesn't go out of her way to learn about aman or valinor, as she's not super interested in the west, but she does pick up some tidbits of knowledge about it, and about the valar, while listening to her aunt. they also spar together, and nimloth -- who really loves hunting -- drags galadriel along on hunting trips. (galadriel doesn't dislike hunting, it's just not on her list of 'best ways to have fun' like it is for nimloth. she does enjoy the opportunity to spend time with her niece, though.)
last hc is that galadriel definitely recognizes that nimloth has ambitions, and is not at all surprised when she and dior step up to the task as the new ruling couple of doriath despite the difficult odds. she's one of the people nimloth turns to for advice during her tenure as queen. and while she's worried for her niece -- they first met when nimloth was a child after all -- she's also proud to see how well nimloth fills the role of one of doriath's two highest-ranking people in such difficult circumstances. galadriel having one of those "they grow up so fast" moments anyone?
anddddd you know since we talked once about how celrond parallels dior/nimloth... maybe galadriel got a sense of deja vu as she watched her silver-haired daughter take the hand of a dark-haired peredhel...
