You Oughta Know (1995) - Alanis Morissette

Genre: post-grunge, alternative rock

Peak position on US Billboard Hot 100: 6

"You Oughta Know" is the lead single from the excellent Jagged Little Pill, which was a big transition from her previous two dance-pop albums into rock music. This song is very far removed from dance-pop music, a firey breakup track featuring Red Hot Chili Peppers members Dave Navarro and Flea on guitar and bass.

They add a lot of flare to the song - I love the distortion and reverb on the guitar, particularly that bit in the final chorus where it sounds like it is screaming. However, the star of the show is, of course, Alanis Morissette, who manages to carry the song above even the layers of angry guitar with her powerful singing. She sings with such venom, spitting out every syllable, every letter, especially the hard "t"s. In the verses, her voices quivers with barely suppressed rage before exploding into the incredibly cathartic chorus. It is a particularly excellent chorus - when I first discovered this song I was listening to it back to back for the chorus; it is so addictive.

It is an interesting psychological thing that we get so much out of really angry songs like this. Perhaps it is the fact that it expresses emotions that we don't normally get to express so openly and honestly in day to day life. This song is interesting in that sense because it is honest in such a way that it doesn't make her (or rather the narrator) look in the right herself - like how she invades the ex-partner "in the middle of dinner". And the character is clearly vulnerable too, with the sadness in lines expressing the mess he left her in being disguised by the fury in her voice. Despite this, it is hard not to react to lines like "every time I scratch my nails down someone else's back I hope you feel it" with anything other than the childish glee felt when hearing a particularly devastating comeback

It is definitely up there with my favourite angry songs (I would like to mention "Idiot Wind" by Bob Dylan as my potential favourite, since I am unlikely to be able to speak about it again within this format). There is something so enjoyable about a vocal perfomance like this where it truly feels like the singer is going through the anger the lyrics describe. It is a very effective song.

“I am ready. Not pressured. Even Jenny understands now, that I need time, needed time. Jamie and his entire family have given me space and time to work this out. I am ready now.”

 

Dinner in the garden, right where they were hand fast.

 

“Happy anniversary, my heart.” He toasts her. She clicks her glass with his.

 

“Happy anniversary. I have a gift for you.”
