I've finally watched the Movie, "Felidae" from Last Night which gave Me such a Frightful Chilling Experience through the Thrill Horror Genre (even more brutal than Watership Down or The Plague Dogs compare to the Ginga series).

I've wanted to draw the Main Protagonist himself behind this Adult German Book Franchise, specifically because that Francis is a really Good Animal Protagonist in my Opinion and he's one of the Most Greatest Detectives compare to Basil from Basil of Baker Street (or "The Great Mouse Detective" if you're more familiar with the Disney Adaptation).

I got these book from a secondhand bookstore just a couple of weeks ago. I read the first book "Kattemordene" aka "Felidae" in 2008 for easter.

I absolutely do not read much crime, but this? Edgy mc edge main character as a CAT? Sign me up.

Author is apparently a rightwinger that just keeps doing shit, but this is why we buy books from secondhand stores. I just want this weird book in my bookshelf, and I might read the sequel "Francis" or "Felidae II" since I have it.

Ok, so there's this 1994 movie Felidae. Falls into the category of mature animation like Watership Down. These movies are singular, not part of a trend. They appear once every blue moon and are usually very interesting.

This movie though...

Ok, so it's based on a novel of the same name by turkish-german author Akif Pirinçci. Who is an alt-right speaker and has been to court several times for Volksverhetzung (kinda like sedition). A really serious charge, so presumably he's not a grifter. Even though the turkish minority is one of the prime targets of the German right.

But how's the movie? It's 30 years old, the novel is from 1989. People change, the author to right wing shithole pipeline is a thing.

The movie is kinda yikes. It's pretty homophobic for startes. I don't know how homophobic the time was, but considering it's a movie about talking cats, it's a feat it's homophobic at all. Castrated male cats are gay apparently. The villain is a eugenicist serial killer. How is it handled? Not much. The animation is saturday morning cartoon level of quality, cheap, weird angles and perspectives, unimaginative character design. The German voice acting is pretty good, because they got some pretty big names for the time somehow.

I don't know what I should think. I don't like it, but I also don't want to waste my time analysing why.

I just had the thought of “Watership down is to felidae what lord of the rings is to narnia haha hihi” but then I remembered that neither the lord of the rings or narnia had graphic sex scenes between literal fucking cats, so maybe felidae is just on its own here

Felidae series

It took me a while to grasp what was going on with the books, so I decided to write it down to hopefully help anyone else who’s wanting to read the series. 

Felidae I: “Felidae” (avaliable in German [1989], English [1993], French, Russian, Finnish, Polish, Italian, and Spanish)

The first book is simply called Felidae, and was adapted into the film. It’s one of three books in the series that are officially translated into English. 

Felidae II: “Felidae on the Road” or “Francis” (avaliable in German [1992], English [2005], Polish, Italian, and French)

Felidae III: “Cave Canem” (avaliable in German [1999] and French)

a.k.a. “English readers stop here or learn German”

Felidae IV: “Das Duel” (avaliable in German [2002], Russian and Polish)

Felidae V: “Salve Roma!” (avaliable in German [2005], English, and Polish)

This one was translated into English before the second book for Amazon’s Kindle. An odd choice but hey im digging it

Felidae VI: “Schandtat” (avaliable in German [2009])

Felidae VII: “Felipolis” (avaliable in German [2010])

Felidae VIII: “Göttergleich” (avaliable in German [2012])

By the same author of the series (Akif Pirinçci) as well as Rolf Degen. Most of the book is nonfiction, however at the end of each chapter, Francis gives a witty or informative comment.

Finally got Felidae in the mail today! Now my Unholy Trinity of Not-For-Kids-Animated-Classics book set is complete. Eventually I’ll get all the movies on DVD but for now I think they fit pretty nicely on my non-Warriors shelf. I’m about half finished with Plague Dogs and I’ll move on to Felidae and then Watership Down. I’ve been really looking forward to these classics; Warriors has always entertained me due to the first-person perspective of a wild animal and I think these are the classics that inspired that genre. I’ll probably give a couple characters from each a drawing :3 lmk what you guys think.

You can also check out the 1994 animated film on YouTube. It’s a faithful adaptation, and doesn’t shy away from the dark scenes in the book. (Both versions are extremely gory, so definitely read or view at your own discretion.)

IT’S,,, A LOT

Alright, here’s a list of wild books from what I dub the “cat fantasy” genre!! Under the cut!!

Tailchaser’s Song by Tad Williams - Easily one of the best, and hands-down my favorite. Amazing world-building, with conlang, songs, and stories included. Took heavy inspiration from Watership Down. In turn, Warrior Cats was heavily inspired by TS and it’s obvious by the naming system. Takes a wild fucking turn halfway through, massive warning for gore and tons of horror themes. It hasn’t aged well in some aspects though.

Felidae by Akif Pirincci - A movie was made after it. Honestly not a fan of this one, simply because it can get wordy and at times feels a little pretentious?? But it’s murder mystery, and if you’re in for excessive violence, gore, and fantasy, it’s a good fit. Also hasn’t aged well in some aspects, as it was published only 4 years after Tailchaser’s Song.

Windrusher by Victor DiGenti - Have yet to actually read this one! But it’s about a cat going out into the world to find his family, while also stumbling across magic and cat gods. Think of Homeward Bound but fantasy.

The Wild Road by Gabriel King - The fantasy and world-building in this one is similar to Christianity?? Weirdly?? The main character must save the world while being mentored by a mystical cat. Haven’t finished this one, but it seems fairly similar to another series, Mouseheart.

The Tygrine Cat by Inbali Iserles - The fantasy is very much inspired by Egyptian mythology. Involves murder, cat-assassins, and ancient powers and mystery. Similar to Varjak Paw in some ways.

The Book of Night With Moon by Diane Duane - Also haven’t read this one, but it’s like. purely magic and fantasy. As fantastical as you can get in this genre. Involves different dimensions, alternate realities, and cat-wizards. It sounds fucking wild and I can’t wait to read it.

Guardian Cats and The Lost Books of Alexandria by Rahma Krambo - You ever wanted to read a book about cats who are protecting the Library of Alexandria? But like an alternate reality, inter-dimensional Alexandria protected by magic? Including betrayal and assassination attempts? I wasn’t a Big fan of this one but it deserves to be on this list because holy shit.

The Named by Clare Bell - This one involves extinct big cats, but might as well put it here. Involves the taming of fire, gods, and wonderful amounts of worldbuilding. Never got to finish this one, but I highly recommend it, if only because the main character’s charming as hell.
