I have to say, this is one of the the most brutal betrayals I've seen in any media in a while. Oh there was some foreshadowing Zeno had some ulterior motives, and it was clear he wanted his immortality to end. But it was always contrasted with how much he seemed to care about and look after his companions.
I expected Zeno and Yona might have different goals at some point. What I wasn't expecting was the emotional gut punch that was Zeno attempting to ritually kill three of his companions in a convoluted attempt at suicide and then saying it was so insignificant a betrayal he couldn't bother to remember it

I mean I was wondering they never got to speak about the suffering Zeno went through in the two thousand years he lived or how difficult it must be for him to outlive everyone he meets and comes to care about...
So this chapter makes sense and reveals things and disguises. Zeno using "I" and switching to his childish Zeno speech, to show he has to work with disguises and self-deception to keep himself sane in face of all the people he lost...
How can he return the dragons without returning Hiryuu too though? How come he doesn't need Yona for his plan, when the dragons gather around her?
What logic does it make for the dragons to run out of their lifespans now, when Yona is young and in trouble and will need them the most? The first generation lived to their old age.
I loved Yona's and Hak's reaction, Hak panicking, Yona realizing Zeno lied and Still hugging him and wanting to find another way...but how can you fight an immortal dragon with none of the negatives and limits of the others? Zeno's dragon form will never run out its lifespan...and he can turn into a dragon at will?
Where did the chalice disappear to? We didn't hear about this kind of magic being possible yet.
Anyway, feels like Yona and Hak might have to regroup and work with Suwon for the next part.
The best outcome I think would be to lift the dragon warrior's and Hiryyu descendants curse. So the three dragons and Suwon would become human and get their lifespans back without their powers. Zeno can find his peace in heaven.
How I have no clue though. Any ideas?

What's your thoughts about the recent development in Akayona?
Dear anon,
I think it was the best chapter since I don't know how long and now thanks to Zeno making a good point in front of Yona, Hak and moving the plot forward. It will be good if Yona starts to ask herself a question what Hiryuu’s role in all of this is. I cannot imagine how she could possibly not ask such questions and she should try to put an end to this suffering started by Hiryuu. I also cannot imagine this story going back to putting some random, apparently strong dudes who first are presented to be so strong and then have their ass beaten by Hak, so it is a waste of memory to even try to remember their names, since they amount to nothing interesting.
It could have been somehow explained that Yona didn't give a damn about the suffering of Hiryuu's descendants, which is completely unfair. How she never thought that many people died in suffering throughout 2000 years just because Hiryuu wanted to be a human being. After all she is not on good terms with Soo-won and Mei-nyan was presented as an evil, unreasonable bitch when she made a good point. How could Mei-nyan possibly resent a reincarnation of her ancestor who left her with a terminal disease that killed many people in her family? That's so unreasonable!
But now Yona's friends and companions are in threat of dying. I suppose that should make her think and act to do something. I only hope it will not be like the diary arc where answers basically landed on her lap without any effort. She could go to Ik-su and ask if he knows something, she could ask the living Hiryuu's descendants if they know something and can help. Maybe they at least have an idea where to go to look for an answer to this situation.
But Yona failed in self-reflections so many times that I am not sure she is capable of asking herself interesting questions, so maybe something similar to this chapter that someone else will make a good point and shove it into Yona's face? It will not present her as a thoughtful and intelligent heroine, but at least the story will move forward.

Zeno´s betrayal
I loved it! Honestly! It makes so much sense regarding his desperation we have seen in Zeno´s past.
Honestly I consider the emotional tension between characters that consider their point of view correct, even though they know that they have to sacrifice...important bonds to people they hold dear, the most fascinating points in a story.
This was the case with Soo Won, who - just like Zeno - was more a victim of circumstances that stepped up, because he understood the situation and the dangers they would face better than the adults. Soo Won wished for revenge, yet also cared greatly for the wellbeing of the people living inside his country and he knew that Yona and Hak would become his enemies the moment he would kill the king....
And Zeno? Who understands the misery of the dragon warriors better than the person that has to suffer loneliness for 2000 years. And again and again has to witness the cruelty of the people, the pain of being an outcast that accompanies most of the dragon warriors their whole life?...that is often a senseless life as the person they need to protect doesn´t even appear.
And then he knows...after Yona´s death...there will be another period, where he has to suffer loneliness...Zeno´s mind is already heavily damaged and he is - actually nearly breaking down.
That person was a naive, sweet boy who had to endure such an immense amount of pain only because he wanted to create a better world...Like honestly...That was Zeno´s wish...how horrible he had to pay for this naive thought.
Can you really blame him? Would you live for another 2000 years of loneliness, while having to face the pain of people you care about? Zeno has loved his comrades and the descendants of his comrades...after all.

Akayona 253 spoilers
The author gets a lot of criticism for some of their choices, but I gotta applaud this one.
Once again, Yona is faced with the betrayal of someone she loved and trusted unconditionally. Her heartbreak is then further confused by the reality that the betrayal was maybe in the best interest of others.
It’s a perfect mirror of how this series started, and I'm excited to see how all her growth will lead her to react!

SPOILERS FOR CH 253 OF AKATSUKI NO YONA/ YONA OF THE DAWN MANGA
Tumblr media
I drew this panel in my own style
This is actually my first fanart of akatsuki no yona ever. It's really surprising since this is actually my favorite series of all time, and ive been following this manga since 5-6 years ago, possibly more. I honestly felt like I had to make it considering what happened in said chapter
no text version vvv
Tumblr media
in my opinion, because i literally grew up with these characters throughout the years, and reading their journey up until now, this hurts me more than what happened so far in Twisted Wonderland's book 7 (my other main fandom im in rn)
just a tad more (lies, THIS HURTS A LOT MORE BC ITS JUST BEEN OVER A YEAR OF ANGST BEING BLASTED IN MY FACE)
Tumblr media
Sorry if the quality of my sketch isnt up to par with the original
As stated before, ive never drawn any fan art for this fandom before this point, and it's currently 3:38 am for me

cause sometimes i do write for other fandoms hehe
some hak x yona, for any akatsuki no yona fans out there that might still exist!
(also spoiler alert for chapter 253 so if you arent caught up please read at your OWN RISSSSKKK)
Left alone in the aftermath, she feels numb.
Hak has come and gone, building a fire, hunting and cooking a rabbit that still sits untouched at her feet, draping his cloak over her shoulders, yet still she cannot move. She cannot bear to take a single step forward, a single step back, a single step anywhere. Not without them. Not without her dragons. Not without her beloved comrades.
She simply cannot believe that this would be the end of them, that after all they’d been through together, after all they had endured, that this truly would be the end. Yona doesn’t know it, but tears are streaking her cheeks, staining the front of her dress as she cries silently, the pain intense. Somehow, this feels even worse than the murder of her own father, of losing her home and the only life she’d ever known. This feels as if a part of her were gone, taken from her without warning, leaving behind a ghost of who she once was. Her dragons had been more than comrades, more than friends, they were a part of her, just as she was a part of them. And to no longer have them at her side, to touch or to hold, to scold or to pester, she simply cannot imagine it.
It simply cannot be.
His own pain is evident, the bonds of friendship he’s forged with each of the dragons left behind by the imprints on his heart and mind. He too cannot bear to think that it was all over, that there would be no returning of their beloved friends, their dragon friends, their family. After all they’ve been through together, every fight, every win, every loss, every moment, he can’t begin to imagine that it was all over now. He’s cried his tears, though, and Hak knows he must be strong, perhaps stronger than he’s ever had to be before.
And so, as he crosses across the campsite, dropping the wood he carries beside the burning fire, simply so he might kneel down in front of the crying girl, putting both of his hands on her shoulders. “Princess…” He speaks softly, gently, but she does not react, as if she cannot even hear him through her anguish. “Princess.” He tries again, stronger; she sucks in a breath, reacting, but not responding. “Yona!” He calls her by her name, something he never does, and it does the trick- she blinks back into the present, her violet eyes swollen and gleaming like the most precious of jewels. “You need rest, sweetheart,” he softens again and she swallows, nodding, having no energy left to argue.
As he sits back on his hunches, prepared to rise back up, he feels the tug of her hands on the front of his robes. “Don’t go,” she whispers, pained, a fresh wave of tears filling her desperate eyes. Hak’s heart breaks all over again, but he steels himself against the pain, nodding his head. How could he ever leave her side, after all?
Carefully he navigates her down to the ground, still wrapped in his cloak, shielding her from the world around her with his own body. She squirms against him, burying her face into his chest, one single hand still yet twisting around the fabric of his robes, as if it were the one thing anchoring her to this world. He slides his arm around her slim frame, drawing her in, leaning in simply so he might press a kiss to the top of her head.
For how long they lay like that, Hak can’t really say, but he knows it doesn’t take long for her breathing to slow, for her grip on his robes to slacken, for her to drift off to what he can only hope is a peaceful sleep. As twilight turns to night, he watches over her sleeping frame, never once moving, intent on not disturbing her slumber, listening to the crackle of the burning embers and her soft breathing. He sighs quietly, peering down at her face, the tear tracks still yet evident on her cheeks, the sight like a knife to his heart.
It is right then and there that he vows to bring the dragons back to her, so their family might be whole once more. He swears it, on his own life and hers, that she would spend no more nights crying herself to sleep, for they would be a happy family once more, no matter the cost.
He would bring the dragons back and her smile, too, that was his vow.
