SPOILERS if you haven't seen this week's episode obviously
Tumblr media
We start off the episode with this shot of Superman with the drawn on glasses. A good homage to what Lois did in the 1980 Superman II movie...
Tumblr media
where she not only drew the glasses but also a full suit and hat on a picture of Superman.
Tumblr media
Next we see Jimmy waking up and seeing someone debunking his conspiracy theories on Sub-Diego.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sub Diego was an actual place in the DC universe before the New 52 reboot. In Aquaman #15 and #16 (2003) , shown here (W: Will Pfeifer, P: Patrick Gleason, I: Christian Alamy, C: Nathan Eyring, L: Jared K. Fletcher for issue 15, Nick Napolitano for issue 16). The underwater city is actually San Diego, but is buried underwater thanks to a tidal wave and makes its first appearance in Aquaman #15 (2003). There was a lot of casualties from this.
Tumblr media
When we get to our title its "You Will Believe A Man Can Lie" a reference to the tagline for the 1978 Superman movie.
Tumblr media
As seen here on the poster, it says "You'll believe a man can fly".
Tumblr media
Next we see our villain, well one of the villains, for the episode, Heatwave.
Tumblr media
In the comics Heatwave makes his first appearance in Flash 140 (1963) (cover art by Carmine Infantino, Murphy Anderson, and Ira Schnapp). Heatwave aka Mick Rory is a Flash rogue usually acting as a rival to Captain Cold aka Leonard Snart. In MAwS, their Heatwave shares the same last name and powers, but MAwS Heatwave is gender flipped. You might have seen Heatwave in the CW DC comics shows where he is played by Dominic Purcell in The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow.
Tumblr media
Lois, later in the episode, name drops Heatwave's name. Gotta be honest when Heatwave showed up I was like is that Rampage? Cuz the MAwS design looks vaguely like Rampage.
Tumblr media
If she does show up in MAwS, I'll talk more about her in another post, but for now, Rampage aka Karen Lou "Kitty" Faulkner, makes her first appearance in Superman #7 (1987) (full page here: W&P: John Byrne, I: Karl Kesel, C: Tom Ziuko, L: John Costanza).
Tumblr media
Steve drags Jimmy to film his debunking Flamebird videos and references Starro who I talked about here.
Tumblr media
Lois, later runs around with the Daily Planet police scanner trying to catch Superman and the dispatcher reports that a robbery is in progress at McGuinness Luxe Garage.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is a nice reference to Ed McGuinness who was the artist for Superman, Action Comics, and Superman/Batman in the early 2000s. If you've seen Superman/Batman: Public Enemies, then you'll know the movie takes inspiration from his character designs in the first arc of the Superman/Batman comic series. The Superman/Batman #1 (2003) cover here is done by Ed McGuinness, Dexter Vines, and Dave Stewart. I like Ed McGuinness's pencils, very stylized.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Heatwave name drops Livewire and the Gazzo mod family. Both of whom I've talked about here and here respectively
Tumblr media
Heatwave has been running away from Deathstroke here who has been taking our her crew. Notice that Slade Wilson doesn't have the half black half orange helmet yet that almost every Deathstroke depiction always has.
Tumblr media
He, Amanda Waller, and the General who I totally think is General Sam Lane, Lois's dad, are fans of DBZ cuz of the scouters they're wearing.
Tumblr media
Later in the scene we see the General again he's totally General Sam Lane. I'll talk more about him when we get a double confirmation through a name drop/reveal in a later post calling Amanda Waller, Mandy. What a fucking bold thing to say to Waller! Like damn! power move right there!
Tumblr media
Superman and Deathstroke are fighting under a highway and we see the traffic is heading to Bludhaven!
Tumblr media
Very good reference to my favorite character in all of pop culture, Dick Grayson aka Nightwing. Nightwing makes Bludhaven his city to protect. The city makes its first appearance in Nightwing #1 (1996) (the panel here - W: Chuck Dixon, P: Scott McDaniel, I: Karl Story, C: Roberta Tewes, L: John Costanza). Fun Bludhaven fact, its crime rate is WORST than Gotham! Also HIGHLY recommend reading the new Nightwing run cuz its fucking amazing! Won a few Eisner Awards (think the Oscars but for comic books) recently and I am not just saying that because I am a Dick Grayson fan.
Tumblr media
Near the end of the episode, we see Lois willing to jump off a building to prove that Clark is Superman. A lot of discourse was happening online over this, but I do want to say this is pretty on brand for her to do.
Tumblr media
In Superman II, Lois does something similar and Clark saves her. its just in MAwS, Clark flies to save her thus ruining the secret identity, while in Superman II, Clark does save her but he is still able to get away with it thanks to him playing it more subtly.
Don't know why people we're in such a fucking fit over something that Lois has done before.
Tumblr media
In the after credits scene, Jimmy, who planned a sasquatch finding adventure with Lois and Clark, but they were dealing with their shit and Jimmy was by himself, decides to do the finding on his own and meets a giant gorilla. In the first episode Jimmy mentions an intelligent gorilla in France and my guess is this is Monsieur Mallah. You can read more about him here. If you made it this far down, I appreciate you taking the time to check this post out and if you want to see my other MAwS Easter Eggs posts - Episode 1 is here

Reading-list for an “old-school D&D” fantasy
Aka, here is the list of the fantasy books that MASSIVELY influenced the original D&D and its first editions. Or, if you want to put it another way, the books that were the ingredients to create D&D/that were copied by D&D.
# J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Lord of the Rings” (+ “The Hobbit”). The source of modern fantasy, and THE main influence and source of old-school D&D. In fact, the creation of D&D was basically the creation of “The Lord of the Rings: The Role-Playing Game”. Very famously (or unfamously), in its original edition, D&D included a LOT of elements taken from the work of Tolkien, that then had to be re-shaped due to being under the copyright of Tolkien’s work. In the first edition D&D you’ll find “hobbits”, “mithril” and “balrogs” for example - that D&D had to change to “halflings”, “mithral” and “balors” to legal reasons. The only Tolkien-specific creatures D&D could keep were the orcs. Overall a LOT of D&D comes from Tolkien: the original depictions of elves and dwarfs, the ents (sorry, treants), the wights, the symbols of the “eye of fire” and “white hand” for the gods the orcs worship... And of course, the “Ranger” class was originally just the character of Aragorn as a class.
# Poul Anderson’s “Three Hearts and Three Lions”. This book was one of the two sources for the alighnment system of D&D of “Order versus Chaos” in a fantasy world. The D&D trolls were also heavily influenced by the depiction of trolls in this novel, PLUS the “Paladin” class was influenced by the character of Holger Carlsen.
# Michael Moorcock’s “The Elric Saga”.The other main source of the “Order vs Chaos”, “Lawful vs Chaotic” alignment of D&D - but also the main inspiration behind the Drow and the D&D-shaped image of “Dark Elves” in general (in the novels, they are the Melnibonéan Empire). D&D also contains several other references to the Saga - for example “Blackrazor” is inspired by Elric’s iconic sword, “Stormbringer”.
# Robert E. Howard’s “Conan the Barbarian”. The source of heroic fantasy the same way Tolkien’s LotR was the source of epic/high fantasy - the Barbarian class of D&D (and the image of a Barbarian in fantasy in general) all comes from Conan.
# Fritz Leiber’s “Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser”. The origin of the “Sword and Sorcery” genre (at least, as called as such), originally intended as a parody of the Conan-style heroic fantasy genre, but then promptly becoming itself a serious and admired genre-creating classic, Leiber’s works were another major inspiration for D&D (the “Thief” class was heavily inspired by the character of the Gray Mouser), and there is a good number of supplements and books in D&D entirely centered around this book series - introducing the characters of the books, the gods of Newhon, or the city of Lankhmar, into the D&D world.
# Jack Vance’s “The Dying Earth” series. The magic system of D&D was heavily influenced by how Vance re-imagined magic and spells in this unique sci-fi feeling fantasy: some spells and items are directly taken from the books (the prismatic spray, the ioun stones) and the entire concept of needing to “re-learn” or “re-charge” a spell once it is cast is the Dying Earth magic system (called by some “Vancian Magic”).
# H.P. Lovecraft’s work (especially anything tied to the “Cthulhu Mythos”). Lovecraft’s brand of eldritch horror and alien fantasy has also been a big influence over the creatures and deities of early D&D - to the point that the various gods of the Cthulhu Mythos were included as one of the pantheons that could be used in the early editions of D&D (alongside other pantheons such as the gods of Newhon from Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser, or the gods of the Conan world).
# Gary Gygax, one of the creators of D&D, also listed other authors as direct influence for his game, but given I am less familiar with them I will just list them here: Fletcher Pratt (I think it might be his “Harold Shea” series, quite famous in the fantasy genre), L. Sprague de Camp, Edgar Rice Burroughs (the creator of some of the most famous American fictional characters, such as John Carter of Mars, or Tarzan) and A. Merritt.
(Finally, not a literary work, but a series of movies that also influenced early D&D: the “Sinbad” movies of the mid-20th century. If you look through the creatures, monsters and illustrations of early editions D&D you’ll find several references to movies such as “The 7th Voyage of Sinbad“ or “The Golden Voyage of Sinbad”)

Starsky and Hutch’s Girlfriends (and Their Hair Color)
[PBS announcer voice] This post is brought to you by the time I was reading The Ollie Report for Bounty Hunter and came across the memorable line: “Again, Starsky is drawn to the dark-haired girl, Hutch to the blonde. Exogamists they are not.”
These are the two ladies in question, respectively:
Tumblr media
I thought of this quote a lot as I continued watching the show, because it was quite often relevant. But then I got to Starsky’s Lady, and suddenly Hutch’s date wasn’t a blonde! I began to wonder about the quote, and the truth of the sentiment behind it (which is by no means specific to that one blog). Did Hutch really tend to go for the blondes, and Starsky for the dark-haired women?
So like any sane person, I decided to spend a billion hours of my life making a long-ass photo-heavy meta post that hopefully someone will care about. If anyone actually finds this information interesting or useful I will be happy, buuut I guess if nothing else it gives us an excuse to look at a bunch of pretty ladies.
How did I decided who’s here: I started with the list of women from the Canon Compendium’s Girlfriends and Dates page, added anyone whom I felt the boys made a “concerted effort” to flirt with, and then threw out a few people I didn’t think belonged. I tried my hardest to be objective, but making this list was by no means an exact science and several times it really just boiled down to “do I personally believe she should be on here” so like people will have different opinions on that and it’s fine! Spice of life or whatever.
As for the actual contents of the list: I will state each woman’s name and the episode she’s in. (If she doesn’t have a name she’s listed as Jane Doe. This is a cop show, after all.) I will state her hair color-- for Reasons and also My Sanity the only options are “blonde” or “darkhaired” (not blonde), but hair color is fucking weird and sometimes it was a guess so feel free to think otherwise. I will also state the reason that she’s here, aka the nature of her relationship with Hutch or Starsky (or both)-- so spoiler warning for pretty much everything, I guess.
Also fair warning that sometimes I was too lazy to get a good picture, or it was just actually impossible (newsflash: discos have bad lighting). Rip to any women I may have made look bad, you’re all beautiful queens and I love you.
Pre-Show
Tumblr media
Vanessa (Hutchinson Murder One)- Darkhaired. Hutch’s late ex-wife and all-around terrible person.
Laura Kanen (Deckwatch)- Blonde. Hutch’s ex-girlfriend.
Helen Davidson (Lady Blue)- Blonde. Starsky’s late ex-girlfriend.
Kathy Marshall (Fatal Charm)- Darkhaired. A stewardess friend of theirs; it’s never said she’s an ex BUT she kisses Hutch square on the mouth in greeting and is Starsky’s date for dinner/disco. And she dances with both of them. Good enough for me!
Season 1
Hutch
Tumblr media
Jeannie Walton (The Fix)- Blonde. His girlfriend at the start of the episode but not by the end! (Rip king)
Molly (Pariah)- Darkhaired. Stewardess friend/one-night stand? Something like that. Also his date at the end.
Jane Doe (Deadly Imposter)- Blonde. His date at the party.
Abigail Crabtree (Deadly Imposter to Vendetta)- Blonde. The only girlfriend we see in several episodes!! (The only girlfriend that lasts several episodes, whoops.)
Starsky
Tumblr media
Jane Doe (Pariah)- Blonde. His date at the end.
Jane Doe (Deadly Imposter)- Darkhaired. His date at the party.
Amy (The Hostages)- Darkhaired. She works at a café that he’s going to for a second time, to let her know he’s ~available.
Sharman Crane (Running)- Darkhaired. They had a semester of woodshop together in junior high and then they kind of fall in love while he’s helping her dry out.
Season 2
Hutch
Tumblr media
Abby (Deadly Imposter to Vendetta)- Still blonde. Miraculously still his girlfriend. (Until she isn’t.)
Gillian Ingram (Gillian)- Blonde. His now-late girlfriend who fucking deserved better.
Jane Doe (Gillian)- Blonde. Lady at the bowling alley that Starsky discreetly tries to set him up with.
Christine (Starsky’s Lady)- Darkhaired. His date of the episode.
Starsky
Tumblr media
Vicky (The Las Vegas Strangler)- Darkhaired. They don’t really get a chance to go on an official date but they kiss a bunch and he’s really sweet on her and it’s cute.
Andrea (Vendetta)- Darkhaired. His picnic date.
Nancy Rogers (Gillian)- Darkhaired. His bowling date.
Terry Roberts (Starsky’s Lady)- Darkhaired. His now-late girlfriend who, like Gillian, also fucking deserved better.
Laura Stevens (The Velvet Jungle)- Blonde. They’re on a date at the end, but it should also be noted they meet when she accidentally knocks him into a dumpster. You know, like the start of any good romance.
Sharon Freemont (Starsky and Hutch Are Guilty)- Blonde. His evil lawyer girlfriend. (Not that he knows she’s evil.)
Both
Tumblr media
Jane and Bobette (The Vampire)- Jane is the blonde on the right, Bobette is the darker blonde on the left. Starsky and Hutch mix up their names so it’s hard to tell which girl they actually like better, and also they’re twins so like does it even really matter?
Officer Sally Hagen (The Specialist)- Darkhaired. Starsky kisses up her arm in her first scene (someone please file a workplace harassment suit against him), and then at the end he and Hutch keep wrapping their arms around her waist. But she does get to flip both of them over her shoulder, so it kinda evens out.
Season 3
Hutch
Tumblr media
Dianna Harmon (Fatal Charm)- Darkhaired. His possessive, violent nurse girlfriend. (You can really pick ‘em, Hutchinson.)
Dr. Judith Kaufman (The Plague)- Darkhaired. He tries so hard, but twas not meant to be.
Molly Bristol (The Collector)- Darkhaired. His girlfriend du jour.
Anna Akhanatova (A Body Worth Guarding)- Blonde. He’s technically her bodyguard and then they spend like two whole days making out. Good for them.
Mary (Class in Crime)- Blonde. His fishing date.
Starsky
Tumblr media
Jane Doe (Murder on Playboy Island)- Darkhaired. Undercover agent he flirts with at the bar.
Rosey Malone (I Love You Rosey Malone)- Blonde. The entire plot revolves around him falling in love with her and it really doesn’t end well.
Jane Doe (The Collector)- Darkhaired. His date at their late-night deli party. (Bonus Starsky in the picture, hi Starsky!)
Sharon Carstairs (The Heavyweight)- Blonde. Their canoodling on his couch gets interrupted by Important Case Matters, and she winds up getting re-engaged to her ex-fiancé (ex-ex-fiancé?). Rip to a king.
Rachel (Class in Crime)- Darkhaired. His fishing date.
Caitlin (Class in Crime)- Her hair almost has a red tint but it’s otherwise undefinable. Car saleslady/one-night stand.
K.C. McBride (Quadromania)- Blonde. They have a nice taxi date (although he’s been sleep deprived all episode, poor boy, and falls asleep).
Both
Tumblr media
Christine Phelps (The Heroes)- Blonde. She makes them lose all their braincells, it’s painful to witness. This episode hopes you will forget the actress was Gillian last season.
Julie McDermott (The Action)- Blonde. Starsky wins the kerfuffle for her but Hutch definitely makes a good go of it.
Lisa Kendricks (Foxy Lady)- Blonde. They drool and fight over her for half an episode like they did with Christine and it’s embarrassing.
Season 4
Hutch
Tumblr media
Paula (Photo Finish)- Darkhaired. He’s like her date at the party, and also the end.
Kate Larrabee (Cover Girl)- Darkhaired. An old friend of his. It starts out just as a comfort thing but they quickly become very friendly.
Marlene (Starsky’s Brother)- Darkhaired. Starsky steals her from Nicky as a Big Brother Power Move but Hutch winds up with her at the bar.
Marianne Owens (Ballad for a Blue Lady)- Darkhaired. I don’t really know what’s going on here but there’s Something (and there’s a lot of parallels with Rosey Malone, so).
Starsky
Tumblr media
Sergeant Lizzie Thorpe (Discomania)- Blonde. Technically Hutch talks with her more, but Starsky does most of the flirting.
Jane Doe (Discomania)- Darkhaired. He spends literally five minutes dancing with her. Is it relevant to the case? No. Does he care? Also no.
Emily Harrison (Blindfold)- Darkhaired. He accidentally blinds her during a case so he starts hanging out with her out of guilt but I feel like he also kinda falls in love; they kiss at one point anyway.
Marcie Fletcher (Photo Finish)- Blonde. His photographer girlfriend.
Officer Dee O’Reilly (Strange Justice)- Blonde. His meter maid girlfriend. They have a date at the end!
Jane Doe (Dandruff)- Darkhaired. He’s making out with her at the beginning.
Detective Joan Meredith (Black and Blue)- Darkhaired. It’s Heavily implied they slept together. (Side note love u Meredith!)
Melinda Rogers (The Groupie)- Blonde. He has a date with her at the end. (Yeah she slept with Hutch, but he was undercover and proceeds to lowkey rebuff her in the tag, so I’m not counting it.)
Katie (Starsky’s Brother)- Blonde. His date at the nightclub.
Both
Tumblr media
Allison May/Laura Anderson (Targets Without a Badge parts 2 & 3)- Darkhaired. They both try to court her before Starsky realizes she’s his childhood friend (although they do make another go of it in the tag).
Kira (Starsky vs Hutch)- Blonde. Starsky’s girlfriend, although she says she’s also in love with Hutch so then they sleep together which Starsky is NOT thrilled about and it’s a very ugly mess.
Totals:
Hutch:
Tumblr media
Pre-show: 3 (1 blonde, 2 dark)   Season 1: 4 (3 blonde, 1 dark)   Season 2: 6 (4 blonde, 2 dark)   Season 3: 8 (5 blonde, 3 dark)   Season 4: 6 (1 blonde, 5 dark) Overall: 26 (13 blonde, 13 dark)
(If the math looks weird, it’s cause Abigail counts for both seasons she’s in but only once overall.)
Starsky:
Tumblr media
Pre-show: 2 (1 blonde, 1 dark)   Season 1: 4 (1 blonde, 3 dark)   Season 2: 8 (3 blonde, 5 dark)   Season 3: 10 (6 blonde, 3 dark, 1 ??)   Season 4: 11 (6 blonde, 5 dark) Overall: 35 (17 blonde, 17 dark, 1 ??)
(Thirty-five?? Calm the fuck down, Starsky.)
  In conclusion:
“Exogamists, they are not” might have been true back at the end of season 1 when it was said, but it’s certainly not true by season 4/the end of the series. Hutch now seems to favor dark-haired women, and Starsky’s about half and half, although they both wind up with an equal split overall.
Do with that information what you will; I’m outta here.

PART I
One thing rang true and that was the prediction of the brutal blizzard of November 28th. Everyone prepped the best they could with the remembrance of how last Winter had ruthlessly blanketed their homes. There’s a frenzy for backup generators that get bought up in the Chicago stores for the anticipation. The first ominous whistle of the wind, and the pebbles of ice fall on the eve of Thanksgiving. Power flickers in each home giving them a moment of awkward darkness, before the backup generators kick in. The power companies in the city promise to have everyone serviced, but they start to service the scattered patches on the outskirts of the city first .
Most joked that was the brutal blizzard they had prepared for, until Mother Nature dropped her poker face. The ships with cargo became stuck in the harbor due to the icy fortress that froze over the gigantic lake. No lights of passing planes in the sky, as the wind turned into a sinister howl. Darkness engulfed the entirety of the city, except for a strip of hotels in neutral territory. The footmen of the families alert them that there seem to be only a handful of hotels that seem to be around. Meanwhile the temperature dips in the homes of those unlucky, and they must face a brash decision to not become the ice sculptures akin to the people of Pompeii.
Multiple phone calls are done, and just as their phones are about to die they get a booking. A hotel that mentions that the accommodations might be crowded -- However, they can host your groups and promise warmth as long as the storm doesn’t shut them down. Everyone packs up their children, pets, and housemates to journey to the only solace that isn’t sold out in all Chicago.
After a restless eternity everyone was given a room number with their baggage ( human and otherwise ). The group of people that checked guests in alert them that there is a room for the animals to stay in kennels or they may accompany the others up to the room. Just when everyone was annoyed after being crowded in the lobby, and having to wait decades to get from one floor to another in the elevator.  It doesn’t help there’s always that one asshole that tries to asphyxiate everyone with their heinous flatulence.
They FINALLY make it into their hotel room. Massive enough and customized with multiple full sized beds. No television, the heat blares up, it’s the poster child of the most bare necessities room. While everyone claimed a bed and stared haughty towards the guests that had ended up in the same room with them. A loud crackle followed by a slight rumble of their feet had the lights in the hotel rooms go off. The hotel doors seemed to have powered down, and anyone that tried to leave them --found they wouldn’t budge. A soft wheeze emitted from the heater in the room, and for a moment that’s the only noise in the room with you until the profanities start to flood. Winter wasn’t the only one that had prepped for the evening. The Walshes and their affiliates watch on with hidden elation as their plan goes into motion.
Part I will run from November 28th until December 3rd. Under the cut will be the groupings as well as some additional notes for this event.
Please don’t make any new starters open or closed that don’t pertain to this event while it’s happening. Normal replies can be done while the event is running, but it gets confusing timeline wise if people have additional threads that they start that would belong after the event timeline.
For this event specifically, the weather in Chicago is fictional. After the event you can feel free to glance at the Weather app and RP it out that way!
Animals will also be boarded at this neutral hotel. Keep in mind if the animals are left at your residence with the current temperature and no heat they will likely pass away.
Keep in mind that if your character has children (unless they are Walsh affiliates) they  likely have their kids in the room with them or any other NPC’s. If the character is a Walsh it was their choice to have them be ‘stuck’ in the room with them or left with a babysitter provided by the council.
For information on the bold names check the Walsh Discord channel.
PREP PLOT SLOTS CHOSEN
LIAM WALSH & IVY IVASHKOV volunteered to carpool with a hotel van to the hospital for sedatives and other harvesting supplies. AUDREY ROUSSEAU is already at the hospital and helps them fill the van before they all ride back to the hotel together. DAVUT DEMIR & KILLIAN WALSH are tasked with going to The Westin and sabotaging the hotel in time for the storm. They are told to do whatever necessary to make sure the hotel can’t accept any more guests before they return for the night. DARREN MURPHY took a smoke break after unloading only one of the supply vans at the hotel. LINCOLN DAWSON caught them smoking—as opposed to working—and made DARREN MURPHY finish unloading two other vans while they watched.
ASLYN WALSH collected the weekly stash owed from the business owners at Magnificent Mile. She delivered the money to the council without prying eyes of local law enforcement or rival gangs catching on. ARMANDE IVASHKOV & another associate, had the dirty work of cleaning up the old blood stained hotel rooms used for organ harvesting the night before. They made it presentable before opening night. Their efforts were doubled when other affiliates weren’t aware of the chore, and had set off to bloody the room with a fresh harvest session.TARON LYNCH & JOANNA "JOEY" O'SHEA are instructed to sabotage the backup power generators on the north side. Surprisingly, they didn’t get caught. CAOILAINN WALSH had to “check” everyone into the hotel—AKA, assign each guest to a room. Everyone converges in the lobby and watches them impatiently, and the later it gets, the more aggressive the crowd becomes. ASLI DEMIR & FLETCHER HARGRAVE met with Jean Jaques “JJ” Baptiste and persuaded him by discussing terms of agreement for him to temporarily close Romanet Hotel the night of the massive storm.

they have clans in soctland :0? what one r u from??
I mean, yes. But they were broken up a long time ago. Honestly, I don’t know a lot about that period of time, due to the fact my school focused on Mary Queen of Scots for Scottish history.
Clans you might know are the MacDonald’s/McDonalds, The Mackay’s/McKay’s (to be honest pretty much everything starting with Mac/Mc), The Abercromby’s, The Adam’s, the Anderson’s, The Armstrong’s, The Douglas’, the Fletchers’ and other great ones. So basically, if you meet people with these surnames (there a lot more clans but I’m not going to put them all) chances are they have Scottish heritage.
Each clan had it’s own land, Symbol, motto and tartan. I’m from the Forsyth’s, aka the richest clan in history, or so I’m lead to believe. We have a blue tartan but I’m on mobile so I can’t put it in. If you want to you could look it up. So yeah.

Down the Rabbit Hole with Scott
FPL Cup Night Stalker Round Two results & Round Three preview.
Happy Holidays insane asylum,
In case you aren't familiar with this particular flavor of insanity, check out last gameweek's edition here.
In brief, I'm trying to dig up some flesh and bones and occasionally photographs to make our FPL Cup just a little bit more personal.  The triumphs mean more when you know who it was you actually beat.  And the losses are just a wee bit more painful, if you're brutally honest with yourself.
Round Two / GW18 FPL Cup Recap
Walsh@FMLFPL -- Walsh -- 983 points, 217,238th in world vs
GingerNinjaAFC -- Fletcher Horsfield -- 804 points, 3,410,084th in world
Walsh swapped Hennessey out for Patricio and Fletcher saved his transfer.
This one was painful, because while Walsh was flying to an 80 point total on the wings of a Palace-loyalty induced Kane cap for 15x2=30 and Suonnny Boy's joyous 21-point explosion, and while he even got an eight-pointer from his Ginger Prince Kevin off the bench, the real Ginger Ninja, Fletcher Horsfield, put up 86 for a GW rank of 152K.  Cap Salah 12x2=24, Brooks for 15????, vanDijk for 15, Alisson's nine, and a seven-pointer from Pereira did the damages and just like that, Walsh is out 80-86.  Stupid Cup anyway.
Alon@FMLFPL -- Alon -- 983 points, 219,125th in world vs
Kasongokabongo23 -- Mohamed Bondok -- 443 points (started in GW10), 5,668,341th in world
Alon saved his transfer, and Mohamed did the same, in a spirit of mano-a-mano YNWA kindredship.
The good feelings ended there, though, because Alon put this guy to the sword, 71-52 in a match that wasn't close.  Alon started in the hole when Mohamed capped Salah for 12x2=24 and had Alisson's nine-pointer in goal, and Alon went with what turned out to be #CaptainFail Sterling for a 2x2=4, but Alon had the VVDue goal on Friday so all was not lost.  Alon blanked on the whole slate on Saturday, but came back with a Harry Kane HurriKane (15) on Sunday and a SuonFestival (21) and Alon moves on to Round Three.
ProducerNate -- Producer Nate -- 1,037 points, 46,815th in world vs
Jays Squad -- Jakub Chajdas -- 801 points, 3,474,963rd in world
Nate saved his transfer while Jakub took a minus four on the week.  He dropped Kamara for Ings and Bellerin for Balbuena.  He didn't have any depth in his team, so needed to replace Bellerin just to field eleven.  Ings came through with a goal, but Bulbasaur put up a Bagel.
This one wasn't close.  Nate walked it home with a 65 to 39-4=35 victory.  His Suoooonn haul of 21 along with Salah's dozen and nine from Alisson were enough to coast.
Round Three / GW19 FPL Cup Preview
Alon@FMLFPL -- Alon -- 1,054 points, 152,938th in world vs
M.S.R. FC III -- Saiful Rhyzal -- 846 points (started in GW5), 3,663,422 in world
A first season team from a Malaysian manager who is a Chelsea fan and who reached the third round by beating a team called Sexpackers in the first round and some GhostShip last GW.
Two of his leagues have the tag of MMFL on them, which, it turns out is the Malaysia Mega Fantasy League, which has a closed Facebook group of 896 members, putting our little Slack group to shame.  But if they have a podcast, I bet it's totally lame.  I found three people with this name on Facebook, one of whom is a super FPL nut, but his friends are private and the multiple screenshots from various leagues don't totally match up.  It's kinda gotta be him, though.  He lives in Johor Bahru the capital of the state of Johor on the southern tip of peninsular Malaysia.  But if only it was a slightly differently spelled Saiful "Rizal" and he was from Singapore instead of Malaysia, he could have been this prominent Child Motivational Speaker , whatever that is.  I may have to check this guy out, maybe HE can get my kids to remember to do their chores.
Shared Players -- Kane, Wilson, Sterling, Anderson, Laporte, Hamer
Alon -- Mitrovic, Son, Bilva, Stephens, Alonso, vanDijk, Schindler, Vinagre, Fabianski
Saiful -- Jimenez, Hazard, Pereyra, Billing, Robertson, Yedlin, Wan-Bissaka, Doherty, Alisson
Several of the attack are shared.  We don't know who Bilva becomes yet for Alon, but we also know that Saiful has made two moves for the week already for a minus-four.  Jimenez and Hazard could both be nice returns for Saiful, but Son could drop another 21 on Bournemouth and send Saiful packing.  C'mon Alon!!!
Producer Nate -- Producer Nate -- 1,102 points, 34,960th in world vs
Mehdisnvd -- Mehdi Sahranavard -- 951 points, 1,305,932nd in world
Mehdi is a first year FPL player (at least with this log-in) who is from Iran and doesn't play in any minileagues, so that doesn't bode well for me.  He has beaten a couple of active teams on his way to this matchup with Nate.  This is going to be a dead-end of a search for me and it's late so I'm not going to spend that time.  Of the various pages I looked at, I'm going to go with this one, because I like the profile pic the best.  It's the look I picture Walsh making when he's trying to respond to some of the questions for the Pod.  It's far better than this FBI artist's rendering of a profile pic.  This dude has some interesting pictures including an insane-looking brick-laying machine.  This one likes heavy machinery.  And this one likes lions.  Annoyingly, there's not a whiff of FPL on any of these pages, or even on the ones with similarly spelled names that I looked at.  So it's really probably not any of them.  Sorry.
Shared Players -- Wilson, Salah, Alonso
Nate -- Rondon, Mitrovic, Sterling, Son, Schurrle, Westwood, Robertson, Doherty, Delph, Wan-Bissaka, Alisson, Speroni
Mehdi -- Ings, Jimenez, Hazard, Mane, Fraser, Kante, Trippier, Boly, Duffy, Holebas, Ederson, Foster
Mehdi hasn't made a move yet for the week while it looks like Nate had two frees and is using them both.  The collection of bargain misfit toy strikers between the two of them could all either return or blank and there is really no predicting, but if forced, I like Mehdi's pair this week.  Slight edge to Nate in the midfield because of Son, and I think a clear advantage to Nate's defense.  Verdict?  Nate!
...and because our production crew is down to two survivors, I'm going to try to throw in a team or two from the top of the Slack Puzzles, Pie & Whiskey season-long league going forward just to keep this exercise alive.  These selections won't necessarily be the top ranked teams in the league, but will hopefully be ones who have interesting foes.  I only have myself and one other for this round, because of the short turnaround and in the interest of time and sanity.
Desertonians -- Scott Ostdiek -- 1,052 points, 161,451st in world vs
No Kane No Gain -- Sabian Cullum -- 975 points, 883,460th in world
Sabian is a fourth year player from England who wasn't hard to find at all.  He is this guy on Facebook, from Stowmarket, (pop. 19,000) "a small market town in Suffolk" per Wikipedia.  Stowmarket was notable in history for having had an explosion in a gunpowder factory in 1871 which reportedly rattled the windows 16 miles away in Diss, in case you wondered.   He's more active on Twitter, actually, and that's where all of his soccer chat takes place, and where he's "Just taking it all one step at a time."  Also on Instagram.  He seems to be a nice young gent, out of high school by a couple of years, into his family, his church, and enjoys whiskey, so I'm not going to trash him too much.  He's active in a band at his church and in the youth ministry there.  His dad shaved his longstanding beard for charity last February.
Shared players -- Kane, Sterling, Anderson
Scott -- Ings, Jimenez, Hazard, Richarlison, vanDijk, Alonso, Schindler, Digne, Bennett, Alisson, Hamer
Sabian -- Wilson, Rashford, Sane, Lamela, Traore, Robbo, Laporte, Kiko, Wan-Bissaka, Pereira, Kepa, Ryan
Sabian has a decent team, but Lamela and Traore leaves him dependent on Sane for midfield returns, against my Hazard and Richarlison.  Rashford could return for him vs Huddy, but my budget strikers of Ings and Jimenez have good fixtures.  We both have a Liverpool defender, but I think the rest of his defenders don't particularly have good fixtures this week, so hopefully I ease on through to the next round.
The Strongest -- Eddy Healey -- 1,154 points, 4,046th in world vs
CHANGE NAME -- Cammy Little -- 841 points (started GW3), 3,751,827th in world
There's one Cammy Little who dominates the search results and that's who I'm going with, even though I can't link up his minileague mates.  It might be because most of them could be kids from his youth rugby team or some other youth sports league.  Cammy was a professional rugby player in Scotland and played some international rugby before moving into coaching.  He is involved with Rugbytots, some youth rugby organization and he apparently had some naughty words in his FPL team name, because he's been told to Change Name by FPL Towers.  But they let Sexpacker slide as a team name (see above).  He's on Twitter here, also.  But he's kind of a Ghost on FPL with no transfers since GW6.
Shared players -- Kane, Ederson
Eddy -- Aubz, Jimenez, Salah, Sane, Anderson, Camarasa, Cairney, Kolasinac, Doherty, Digne, Diop, Wan-Bissaka, Button
Cammy -- Lukaku, Kamara, Hazard, Maddison, Milner, Neves, Doucoure, Alonso, Robertson, StCook, Holebas, Gomez, Patricio
Cammy has a few too many dead players and useless players to survive this week.  Go get 'em Eddy!
Good luck everybody!  That's a wrap for this GW!

The Original Vanwall British Grand Prix Winning Car Returns To Sefton
THIS YEAR MARKS THE 60TH ANNIVERSARY of the famous win by Sir Stirling Moss and Tony Brooks at the British Grand Prix at Aintree, which also had the prestige of being the Grand Prix D’Europe for 1957. The Vanwall Grand Prix car made motor racing history and was the last hurrah of the soon-to-be obsolete front engine Grand Prix cars as it scooped the first ever constructor’s World Championship. A special celebration event is being held at The Atkinson, Southport’s beautiful home for music, theatre, art, poetry, literature and history, right in the middle of Lord Street in Southport, on Thursday 13 July to celebrate Sefton’s sporting heritage and to fundraise for The Atkinson Development Trust, which works with the collection to help families, schools and the community access the arts. With its new ‘teardrop’ design and guest driver Stirling Moss (pictured below in the Vanwall) aka ‘The Boy’ as he was affectionately known, the Vanwall drove to victory at a time when the red of Italy dominated Formula 1 racing. What started out as a hobby of the hypercompetitive millionaire, British Industrialist, Mr Anthony Vandervell developed into a life’s obsession. As an early backer of the BRM V16 Grand Prix Car he quit and embarked on his own team so he could have sole control. The name Vanwall was an amalgamation of Vandervell and Thinwall [Thinwall Bearings were Vandervell’s Company’s best known product]. The first Vanwall Special was built for the new Formula 1 regulations for 1954. The Vanwall engine consisted of four 500 cc Norton engines combined into one 2-litre unit. The engine was designed by Norton engineer Leo Kuzmicki. Vandervell was able to use Norton engines and expertise due to the fact that his father was Chairman of Norton! At the end of 1955, Vandervell commissioned a young aircraft engineer, Frank Costin, to design a new sleek, aerodynamic body shape for the Vanwall and Colin Chapman (Lotus) to design the chassis. This resulted in an immediate success as Stirling Moss won the 1956 International Trophy at Silverstone in May. 150,000 people are estimated to have been spectators at Aintree in 1957 as the now three-car Vanwall team took on the power of Lancia-Ferrari and Maserati. After Moss qualified on pole, on lap 27 he had car failure and with Brooks still bandaged from his crash at Le Mans, he brought in his sister car and handed over to Moss – who re-joined the race and won at our home Grand Prix for an unprecedented win!
Tumblr media
This was the first World Championship win for a British car and Moss and Brooks were the first British drivers to win the British Grand Prix in a British Car. The Vanwall’s history may have been short-lived but it had paved the way for other British constructors to challenge and beat the best of the continental powers. The Vanwall historic motor racing car will take pride of place in The Atkinson foyer for 2 weeks from 7-17 July thanks for the generosity of our sponsors AJEstate Agents, Fletchers Solicitors and Stubbs Parkin Chartered Accountants. They have made it possible to have the Vanwall in Sefton for this time and during the British Grand Prix Weekend, which will make it extra special for motoring fans. Emma Anderson, Director The Atkinson said: “We would like to say a huge thankyou to the Donington Museum for lending us the Vanwall and to Peter Cowley and John Searle who have worked so hard with us to make this piece of history come to life.” __________ from p. 4 of issue June 2017 Subscribe now - www.classicmotor.co.uk

off the rack #1162
Monday, May 8, 2017
Life is full of rude awakenings. There's a skiff of snow on the ground this morning but not enough that I need to haul out my boots to go to work. The weather has been brutal recently with major flooding around Ottawa. I hope everyone affected can recover so that their lives can get back to normal.
I want to thank all the friends and families that came into Comet Comics on FREE COMIC BOOK DAY to make the day fun and happy. Spreading the joy of comic books always makes me feel warm inside.
I'll be making my first road trip to Killarney, Ontario to visit my old friend Ron later this week. I'll return in time for Ottawa ComicCon even though I won't be attending. Pike and pickerel season opens this coming weekend so I will be out on the lake trying my luck with my buddy Matt. I will be interested to see how high the water level is and if that affects where the fish will be.
Black Bolt #1 - Saladin Ahmed (writer) Christian Ward (art) VC's Clayton Cowles (letters). This is one of them artsy fartsy first issues where it took way too long to get the story started. Black Bolt waking up in a prison is repeated three times and I almost stopped reading after the third time. The nice art kept me going until the last page but even though Saladin made it so that this isn't just a comic book starring a mime dressed in black, I wasn't impressed enough to want to keep reading. I also didn't like the downward arrow attached to the tuning fork on his head. Jack's original design was just fine.
Eternal Empire #1 - Sarah Vaughn (writer) Jonathan Luna (art, script assist, letters). This new fantasy story is about a worker who escapes from a farm. She's essentially a slave. The kingdom is ruled by an empress who is praised or is forced to be praised by all. I love Jonathan's art and the slave's quest has caught my fancy so I'm hoping she finds her happily ever after.
Jean Grey #1 - Dennis Hopeless (writer) Victor Ibanez (art) Jay David Ramos (colours) VC's Travis Lanham (letters). I am not a fan of the bangs. So I was wishing for the young X-Men trapped in the present from the past to get their own book and this is sort of that but the focus is on Jean. Dennis impressed me with his run on Spider-Woman and he starts off here explaining how this Jean Grey isn't all those other Jean Greys that existed before. Well, that's not confusing much. Young Jean is having lunch in Kyoto, Japan and all of a sudden she has to play super hero because the Wrecking Crew is robbing an armoured truck. Ugh. I would have believed Jean fighting some evil mecha a whole lot more. Then a major distraction helps the bad guys get away. Holy smokes, there's so much contrived nonsense that I can't go on reading. Sorry Jean. I hope the big flaming bird doesn't burn you to a crisp.
Ab Irato #1 - Thierry Labrosse (writer & artist) Jeremy Melloul (English translation) Andworld Design (letters). The title is Latin for "from anger" and it's an angry populace living in Montreal 100 years in the future. It looks like the Saint Lawrence river has risen a lot due to climate change and the city resembles Venice in Italy. A young lad from the country has arrived in Montreal to seek his fortune while a rebellion is taking place. Thierry's art is beautiful and I like the naïve Riel so I'm going to see what happens to him in this 6-issue mini from Germany.
All-New Guardians of the Galaxy #1 - Gerry Duggan (writer) Aaron Kuder (art) Ive Svorcina (colours) VC's Cory Petit (letters). This relaunch is part of Marvel's Galactic Realm and we're back to a team of five with Drax, Gamora, Groot, Rocket and Star-Lord. I relished every issue of the last run and this debut was fun. The team gets tangled in some one-upmanship between The Grandmaster and The Collector so the threat to life and limb is quite high. This is more comedy caper than universe saving so I might read this just for the halibut. Oh, and it explains why Groot is a baby too.
Guardians of the Galaxy: Mother Entropy  #1 - Jim Starlin (writer) Alan Davis (pencils) Mark Farmer (inks) Matt Yackey (colours) VC's Cory Petit (letters). The second of three Guardians of the Galaxy comic books to hit the racks just before the movie Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 hits theatres May 5 features the team trying to work off their debts. It was fun to see one of Jim's creations show up to complicate the Guardians' mission. This story has a universe ending threat but it's kind of silly. I can't say that I like Alan's versions of Star-Lord and Gamora. Peter Quill looks like Douglas Fairbanks and Gamora's wide features are not pretty to me. She looks more like She-hulk than the deadliest hottie in the universe.
Guardians of the Galaxy - Mission: Breakout #1 - Christopher Hastings (writer) Edgar Salazar (pencils) Allen Martinez (inks) Andrew Crossley (colours) VC's Clayton Cowles (letters). The Collector's name is Taneleer Tivan. Learn something new every day. The third of three Guardians of the Galaxy comic books to hit the racks just before the movie Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 hits theatres May 5 features the team trying to escape from the clutches of The Collector. Y'think he's in the movie? This was a fun space romp with superb art. I liked Gamora a lot more in this comic book.
Savage Things #3 - Justin Jordan (writer) Ibrahim Moustafa (art) Jordan Boyd (colours) Josh Reed (letters). The bad guys want to cause a black-out in New York City. That can't be good.
Superman #22 - Peter J. Tomasi & Patrick Gleason (writers) Doug Mahnke (art) Jaime Mendoza & Ray McCarthy (inks) Wil Quintana (colours) Rob Leigh (letters). This is some good stuff right here. Lois makes a surprising discovery that leads to some scary action with creepy townsfolk. There are more surprises in store as "Black Dawn" continues. Doug's art is so good in this. I've stopped reading a lot of DC books but this issue is a good example of why I've stuck with this title.
Paper Girls #14 - Brian K. Vaughn (writer) Cliff Chiang (art) Matthew Wilson (colours) Jared K. Fletcher (letters). I hope this isn't the "season finale" and we have to wait three months for the next issue because this issue has one heck of a cliff (Chiang) hanger.
Spider-Man/Deadpool #17 - Joe Kelly (writer) Ed McGuinness (pencils) Mark Morales & Walden Wong (inks) Jason Keith & Matt Yackey (colours) VC's Joe Sabino (letters). The story of Spider-Man's crisis of conscience continues. Will he kill Itsy Bitsy or will Wade save Peter's soul? I am staying tuned.
Batman #22 - Joshua Williamson & Tom King (writers) Jason Fabok (art) Brad Anderson (colours) Deron Bennett (letters). The best thing about part 3 of "The Button" is that I wasn't confused because I didn't read part 2 in Flash #21. The bad thing is that the time traveling and other dimensional paradoxes made me grind my teeth in frustration. Father Thomas Wayne meeting alternate son Bruce Wayne was touching but I did not believe for a second that what Thomas asked Bruce to do would become reality. If none of the Watchmen show up in this story I will be sorely disappointed.
Riverdale #2 - Greg Murray & Daniel King (writers) Joe Eisma & Thomas Pitilli (art) Andre Szymanowicz (colours) John Workman (letters). Got my teen drama fix for the week. I am so glad they updated these old characters to make them more relevant and multidimensional.
Spider-Man #16 - Brian Michael Bendis (writer) Oscar Bazaldua (art) Justin Ponsor (colours) VC's Cory Petit (letters). This issue starts with the opening salvo of a turf war between the Black Cat and another crime boss. Man, Oscar draws a super cute Felicia Hardy. Then we get back to the complicated life of Miles Morales. I liked how he blew off steam there.
The Unstoppable Wasp #5 - Jeremy Whitley (writer) Elsa Charretier (art) Megan M. Wilson (colours) VC's Joe Caramagna (letters). The members of G.I.R.L. (Genius In action Research Labs) gathers for the first time to try and defuse the bomb in Ying's neck. It's Nadia AKA The Unstoppable Wasp, Taina Miranda (engineer), Alexis Miranda (Taina's sister), Lashayla Smith (physicist), Priya Aggarwal (biologist) and Ying (chemist and ex-Red Room roomy of Nadia's). I liked that the girls don't save the day which sets up a meeting with the villain. Hello Mother.
Champions #8 - Mark Waid (writer) Humberto Ramos (pencils) Victor Olazaba (inks) Edgar Delgado & Nolan Woodard (colours) VC's Clayton Cowles (letters). How do the kids deal with the Freelancers stealing their brand? Find out in this terrific issue. I love team books that explore the interpersonal relationships of the team members and Mark does some interesting exploring here. I would find this book boring if the Champions just went from issue to issue dealing with crises and fighting bad guys. The last page will put a crimp in the team's roster.
Jessica Jones #8 - Brian Michael Bendis (writer) Michael Gaydos (art) Matt Hollingsworth (colours) VC's Cory Petit (letters). Jess has a new case and her client is Maria Hill, ex-director of S.H.I.E.L.D. Maria is wants to know who is trying to kill her. My favourite Bendis books have a lot of dialogue and this issue has loads.
