Google Germany blocking AO3 in search results

I haven't seen anything on this cross my dash, and I thought it was worth bringing here with as much accuracy as possible. (I first encountered it on Reddit.)

Currently (24.12.2022) Google is blocking AO3 from search results in Germany as a result of a complaint.

It is only Google, not other search engines. The government did not request it. It has nothing to do with copyright. It does not impact access to the site itself. ETA: If you use Chrome, it may not let you bookmark AO3 URLs (reports are mixed).

I tested it using a VPN set to Germany, searching for my AO3 username. This is a Google search for leveragehunters showing no AO3 results while connected to a German VPN:

A DuckDuckGo search for leveragehunters while connected to a German VPN - AO3 is the third and fifth hit.

The bottom of the Google search using the German VPN states:

What was the complaint? You can read it here (and it is seriously light on information): https://lumendatabase.org/notices/9415, but it says:

A URL that otherwise would have appeared in response to your search was not displayed because that URL was reported as illegal under German youth protection laws.

Like I said up there, this was not a government request. Government requests to remove material from Google say so on the notice (see, for example: https://lumendatabase.org/notices/30045178 or all of these).

Anyone can make a complaint to Google and ask them to remove something for allegedly violating local laws. I suspect what's happened is that someone has reported the top level AO3 URL to Google through their procedures and that Google, being the knee-jerk risk-adverse devil company that it is, has blocked the site pending investigation (AKA lawyers saying yes or no) or just went stuff it, a shoddy complaint's good enough cause we don't actually care.

So, Devilman OC! 0u0 [even through chaotic tornado weather, I'm vigilant about POSTING art! heh!

So, Mainesthai, aka Manic! or Keely if you want to be down to Earth and Human about him. Past self was a lil' foxlike bestia devil referred to as Mainesthai or "Mai". He was a member of the Swift-Tail Bestia Devil tribe. He was the de facto leader after having to combat their former leader, Dual Animus. Unbeknownst to DA, Zennon was already heavy on mentoring Mai to become a more powerful being: Thus, becoming triumphant over DA, Mai becomes Mania; a more powerful, ruthless devil who carried his tribe further into an unfortunate spiral. His demise would follow a century or two after.

When the Age of Man would begin, Mai is reborn into the soul of a young, charismatic and empathetic young man named Killian Averne. He doesn't care much for insane social interactions and prefers his small social groups. He ends up discovering his abilities later on, and he has to go through several hardships to learn to manage Mai and his many other forms!

Sooo I don't know if someone already talked about it but...

Have you ever noticed the similarity between Armand and Gian Giacomo Caprotti, aka il Salaì (1), favourite pupil and (almost surely) lover of Leonardo da Vinci?

If not, here some basic infos:

He was born in 1480 near Milan, we know it because we have Leonardo's diary saying that Giacomo joined his bottega in 1490, "when he was ten" (2);

He was nicknamed "Salaì" ("devil") because he was, apparently, quite a pest :)))). He was, in Leonardo's words, "a thief, a liar, stubborn, and gluttonous";

Leonardo was born in 1452, which makes him 38 years old when Giacomo joined his household (yes, the age gap);

Salaì stayed with Leonardo almost till his death and was the model for many some of his paintings and sketches (3), some of which are erotic ones;

In 1523 he married a woman called Bianca Coldirodi d'Annono.

Last but not least, Salaì looked like THIS

So if we look at Armand's backstory (at least, the one set in Venice with Marius), I think it's pretty easy to see the similarities:

Armand states in The Vampire Armand that he was born around 1480-81;

He was (and continue to be) a pest *affectionate*

He has a relationship with Bianca;

Marius is very Leonardo-coded for many reasons (age-gap aside, I'm really talking about his personality and attitude);

I don't think I have to comment on the features of Salaì, do I?

In conclusion, I don't think any of it is random. Anne was a fan of Reinassance Italy, I'm pretty sure she did read something about Salai and Leonardo and decided to use it in her books.

Notes

Shortcut for "Sala[d]ino" which means "Saladin" but was used at the time to say "devil" because... well, period typical islamophobia. But you have to admit, the fact that his nickname was Devil, is something.

The Italian Wiki also gives a birth date: 27th December but I don't know the source (however, this is really funny to me because I've always headcanoned Armand as a Capricorn).

There is also this theory according to which he was the model for the Mona Lisa, since, yes, Salaì did actually modelled for paintings of women.

A Gay Girl's Guide to Korean Musicals (with English subtitles!)

People often associate musicals with male gayness (both onstage and off) but there's stuff out there for female-oriented queers too! It's just harder to find, which is why I put this video together despite not knowing Korean.

This list isn't comprehensive and I deliberately chose musicals with either queer female characters or gender-free casting (i.e. female actors playing male roles), except for Bernarda Alba, which is special as it’s by far the largest-scale all-female production with 10 characters. Obviously there are many Korean musicals out there which don't meet these criteria and are still of interest to the queers, but I wanted to highlight these in particular as they are, apart from Rebecca, not as well-known. I highly recommend checking out @koreanmusicals for more information on Korean musicals generally!

Note: Again, I don’t understand Korean and relied heavily on machine translation and the original lyrics for licenced productions, so any errors in the subtitles or explanations are mine. Corrections are very welcome!

Thank you!!! Reading that excerpt back, it feels like someone else wrote it lol I think my issue was I had so many open doors where it could go that picking just one or two has been a challenge. But I worked it out, I got Daniel's motivations sorted and now we're onto the smut like we should be.

Because it's hard right, when these characters can live centuries and experience all sorts of lives, and have all these potential distant relatives out there. There's so much to mourn, to decide what's worth keeping in their lives. There's a lot of complicated feelings on family from Daniel's end, having grown up in the 50s when parents were so checked out and absent. And for Armand who got kidnapped multiple times- how does he decide what's family? How does he decide what he feels like he's lost and what parts of his past to keep?

So we're gonna have a little funeral for the two boys who lost their lives as a result of events in Venice (yup, Riccardo is in it too!). And Armand is gonna mourn his mortal life and then he's gonna take these vampire drugs and let Daniel have him the way he used to have him when he was alive.

Here, for being my cheerleader 🥹:

Armand nods. “Yes. That. Any way that you make me do that will be a new experience for me. And you certainly should know what you’re doing, I’ve seen you work on mortal men enough times to know you’re always very successful.”

Daniel laughs. “That’s a way to put it. So you want me to teach you some things, then. You want to be bossed around by someone more experienced.”

“Yes. But it won’t be simple for you. After all, I’m a good Orthodox boy. I could take some convincing.”

Armand looks up at him, chin raised in defiance. He means to look sincere about it, to challenge Daniel, but when he glimpses his reflection in the mirror he sees only petulance. The hard set of a mouth, locked into place to compensate for the heart that’s jack hammering against his sternum.

Daniel arches a brow at him. He leans in for what Armand assumes is a kiss, and so he lets his eyes fall shut in anticipation. But Daniel’s mouth misses his, it goes along to graze his cheek instead and leave goosebumps in its wake. His lips are smooth as silk, they ghost along his skin so lightly it sets Armand’s entire face tingling.

And god, if that is all it takes to get the golden haze creeping into his vision then what is this experience going to be like, when he layers mortal desire atop his immortal senses?

Daniel’s mouth finds the shell of his ear, traces along it and leaves Armand gripping the edge of the countertop tight. When Daniel takes a step into his space his kneels fall open without his mind even issuing the command. It’s automatic, his body and its urges taking over so that his hands fly from the counter to grip at Daniel’s bare chest.

The hair there is just enough to dig his fingers into. A bare thread for Armand to cling to when Daniel’s cold breath hits his ear.

“I don’t think you’ll take that much convincing. You’ve always been greedy, Riccardo has told me about that,” Daniel murmurs.

Armand swallows thickly. “Riccardo was nineteen. He would have fucked a hole in the wall, had it been the right size and depth.”

“Mm, but he wasn’t the one dragging his friend out of bed to fuck. And he’s not the one with his legs spread, exposing himself on this counter either.”

Armand had been so focused on Daniel’s lips that he hadn’t felt the towel fall open. And suddenly its as if all his senses rush to that one place, to his bare cock between his thighs. He has the urge to cover himself but it would be pointless now. He dropped his modesty the moment Daniel looked at him like one looks at a defiant child, amused and assured he would win this battle.

“So you can pretend all you want,” Daniel continues. “But I think you’ll roll over and beg for me within the first few minutes. Especially if I don’t take the drugs at first, because that’s what you want too, isn’t it? You want to be back on the other end of things again, being toyed with by a monster who can’t feel the same things as you.”

Heat rushes to Armand’s chest and turns his skin pink. Caught. He’s a fish in a barrel for Daniel, a bear who happily wanders into a trap. He nods.

“You think you’re such a locked vault of secret ideas and desires, but you’re not. I know what you want without you even having to say it. You spent years when I was a mortal teaching me all about you,” Daniel says.

essa é a nik draganov, uma ex devil da cleopatra’s secrets (a criatividade de centavos) e atriz - uma nepobaby na verdade, a avó dela foi atriz e a mãe também, dois ícones de filmes de terror inspiradas fortemente na janet leigh e a queridíssima oscar winner > jamie lee curtis. a nik participou do remake de neurose (aka psicose) no mesmo papel que a avó e fez muito sucesso a partir daí. no entanto, como uma grande fã de cinema, ela tá revoltada por ter sido pega pela maldição das scream queens (só levam ela a sério em filmes/séries de terror) e ela não é tão fã do gênero – muito cult a gata. enfim, ela é bem intensa, inconstante, carismática, super temperamental e mimada, bem difícil de trabalhar com ela, sabe? mas tem um belo rostinho, um sobrenome de peso e uma fã base de malucos - igual ela. ela atuava como protagonista nas duas temporadas de the torment e como lorelai em 6.

e esse é o kj foster da one dimension, um holandês risonho que ri e sonha (não rimou, mas lembrou vocês de alguém aí?). ele é fortemente inspirado no niall horan da 1d; golden boy sorridente, engraçadinho e fofo. ele nunca se deslumbrou com a fama e se manteve muito pé no chão desde que a boyband alcançou o sucesso, sempre focado na música e em fazer as pessoas rirem e etc. porém, agora ele tá passando por uma fase de bad boy depois que a sua namorada meteu um belo par de chifres na cabecinha dele (inclusive, procura-se ex namorada do kj). aí agora o lindo meio que cansou de ser bonzinho depois de refletir muito sobre a sua vida e ver todas as vezes que foi feito de trouxa. inclusive tá bebendo bem mais que antes e dando um certo trabalho para seus colegas de banda, já que se tornou um dos motivos das discussões e anteriormente era ele quem apaziguava o caos.

My coping mechanism rn is scrolling through my Instagram feed and imaging Armand bleaching his eyebrows like one of those high fashion girlies and actually making it work. At some point he shows up to court looking like that and the young vampires are now even more terrified of him but lowkey impressed because that’s an alien superstar right there. It's okay, I started it. I deserved what I got. Which was staying up until 3:30am wrapped in vampire angst. Decide to just go all out and read the burning Venice chapter of B&G in bed -- I won't ruin our Saturday too, but can I just say... I can't believe Anne sat down to write this scene not once, but twice!

I have so many half-baked meta thoughts right now about it feels to have failed as a parent/provider, to have tried to do everything that you thought was right and still you couldn't protect your child from the world.

And also lately I've been pondering how Lestat never really seemed to get closure for Claudia. Obviously, Marius's loss of Amadeo and Lestat's loss of Claudia are very different in context, but thinking about how Anne based both Marius and Lestat on Stan and just this ongoing theme of paternal grief, loss, betrayal, humiliation, and questioning (why did it happen? was it my fault, and if it was, how much was my fault? are they suffering/did they suffer? etc).

Hmm, I appear to be being a bummer again... SO, moving on:
